Mayor Palmer Returns

By Marian SAMPSON FINALLY Port Stephens residents have their elected councillors confirmed after the contest for Mayor went down to the line.

Past Mayor Ryan Palmer has been returned to the position, by the smallest of margins.

Labor’s Leah Anderson had been trailing Independent Ryan Palmer by as few as 200-300 votes at one stage, however Anderson only attained 23,620 votes 49.41% of the valid Port Stephens residents votes for the position of Mayor seeing her graciously concede to Palmer who achieved 50.59% of the votes with 24,187 votes after the final postal votes were counted.

Counting was finalised on Thursday for the rest of the Council, with Peter Kafer and Peter Francis joining returning Councillor Giacomo Arnott in the West Ward, Jason Wells completing Central Ward with Councillors Steve Tucker and Chris Doohan, and returning Councillor Glen Dunkley being joined by Matthew Bailey and Leah Anderson in the East Ward.

Ryan Palmer told News Of The Area, “The voting was close but I want to reassure the Port Stephens community that I’m committed to focusing on what matters most to our residents and businesses,” Mayor Palmer said.

“This year we’ve been listening to our community about what they value most in the places they live, work and invest.

“We’ve been listening so we can take action to enhance and protect what’s most important.

“We know our community want to see action, not plans that sit on a shelf.

“My focus is to drive the actions the community are looking for and to continue implementing our Place Plans.

“I’m excited to lead improvement in the liveability and wellbeing of the Port Stephens community, putting people and places first,” he said.

Landcare groups will be able to help restore riverbanks that have suffered from recent natural disasters to their former glory, thanks to a new NSW Government $3 million support program.

Minister for Agriculture and Western NSW Adam Marshall announced the Landcare Small Grants Program, which is part of the NSW Government’s $200 million Regional Recovery Package.

“Whether it was the bushfires, drought or repeated flood events, our riverbanks and waterways have been severely impacted over the past few years.

“While we cannot control these events, we can carry out targeted works to mitigate erosion and make sure these fragile ecosystems not only recover but are also healthier and more resilient than before.

“The beauty of this program is by working with eligible Landcare groups across NSW, they will be able to use the funding to engage local contractors to deliver works,

so the money is staying within our regional communities.”

Chair of the Parliamentary Friends of Landcare and Member for the Dubbo Electorate Dugald Saunders said eligible Landcare groups would have the opportunity to apply for grants of up to $50,000 to deliver on-ground projects such as riverbank and stream restoration, on-farm erosion works and tree planting.

“This restoration work is critical to ensuring riverbanks and the wider ecosystems are healthy, which will improve water quality for our native fish species,” Mr Saunders said.

Local Land Services will work with Landcare groups to administer the grants and support them to deliver the on-ground works.

Landcarers deliver a range of support and services to local and regional communities across NSW, including environmental works, community support and education.

By Tara CAMPBELL PORT Stephens Council has been hard at work across December with several Council projects and works.

Birubi Point Sand Dune Stabilisation Over the past two weeks, work has started on the Birubi Point site to stabilise sand movement around the bottom car park at the headland.

The works involve reconstruction of an eroded dune, construction of sand-catch fences and dune vegetation planting. The intended outcome is to see a decrease in wind-blown sand in the bottom car park and reduction in maintenance operations.

James Road Port Stephens Council has begun a road rehabilitation project on James Road, Medowie.

This project will provide over 500m of widened and rehabilitated road pavement including upgrades to swale drains and driveway crossing pipes.

Funded through the Fixing Local Roads program, the project budget has a budget of $468,511 with work scheduled to be completed in late January.

Mullabula Recreation Hub Things are getting nearer to the finish line for work at the Mallabula Recreation Hub. Recently, softfall rubber and mulch was installed in the playground, more connecting paths were installed, and more turf was laid.

A new amenities block had been completed, however ongoing vandalism to amenities has halted the progress of the Hub. New toilet bowls have been repeatedly smashed, bubbler water pipes bent out of shapes, plumbing damaged and both cubicle doors and handles smashed off.

“It is extremely disappointing that we may be in a position where the new park facilities will open without accompanying amenities.

“Despite being on track to open the new Hub this week, serious ongoing vandalism

is slowing us down,” Port Stephens Council posted on their Facebook.

One year on: memorial for the Stockton Breakwall Cats

IT has been a year since The Port of Newcastle hired a contractor to kill a colony of cats on Stockton Breakwall.

On the night of 17 December 2020, a contractor killed and severely injured many stray cats who made their homes on Stockton Breakwall.

Stockton residents and community groups were left shocked after waking to find all but thirteen of the cats killed.

One year later, the Stray Cats Project organised a memorial to pay respect to the cats which lost their lives.

“They will forever be in our hearts,” a representative from The Stray Cats Project said.

“We wanted to remember them-

remembering how they touched our lives and how these innocent cats had their lives turned upside down with many lives cruelly taken,” they said.

The memorial was a peaceful event in which community members could take a moment to remember what the cats meant to them.

Darren Brollo, Animal Justice Party Regional Group Leader said that it wasn’t just the cats who suffered trauma due to the event, it affected all of those who had been working with the cats.

“The Port of Newcastle commissioned this kill, but did they stop for a moment to consider the aftermath of this massacre and the ongoing trauma these dedicated volunteers (of The Stray Cats Project)

have endured this past year?” he said.

The Stray Cat Rescue had been working with the cats in a trap, neuter and release plan, aiming to rehome and adopt the remaining breakwall cats.

Before the ordered cull, the

group had already managed to bring the population of the breakwall from 100 cats to 40 with their successful program.

“We are so very thankful for the support we were shown at our memorial for the Stockton Breakwall

by Club President Phil Dodd in distributing the Christmas sack, and everybody was thrilled to receive a gift.

All present enjoyed and appreciated the guest appearance and thanked the good lady for her sterling effort on the day, and sent their best wishes to Father Christmas in his

dealings with the Gremlins at the covid admin centre.

David Heath of the Probus Club of Port Stephens told News Of The Area, “All present agreed from now on to write to Father Christmas and Mummy Christmas throughout the year, to reinforce those request from years ago for a bike, a cap gun, a doll's house, a paint set and a cricket bat.

“In some cases, members of the club have been writing to the Christmas couple for seventy odd years, and if things don’t improve soon they will move to Amazon - so there,” he said.

After some great nibbles supplied by the club ladies, washed down with a glass of bubbly, everybody agreed to a great day by a great Probus Club.

Port Stephens Probus Club Celebrates

FOR the Probus Club of Port Stephens the Christmas period started with a difference in this Covid year.

Father Christmas’ vaccine records were, like so many of us, somewhere in that big bad bureaucratic machine, and to top it all, the reindeers were having a bad hair day, so he sent snow covered apologies for the Club’s Christmas Nibbles event this year at the Norburn Ave community centre.

Fortunately, the club held a trump card in the form of good relations with Mummy Christmas, a much admired Lady and movie buff by the name of Anne Shaw.

As it happened, the good lady had no engagements on that day, and so agreed to distribute the many goodies sent from Toyland by the big man, Father Christmas.

“Some people wandered up the breakwall where they laid flowers on the rocks and others placed them in the water.

“We all remembered them in our own way,” The Stray Cats Project said.

Missing

POLICE are appealing for public information to locate an elderly woman missing from Millers Forest.

Lynette Robson – aged 74 – was last seen at a home at Raymond Terrace Road, Millers Forest, about 11am Monday 27 December 2021.

She was reported missing to officers attached to Port Stephens Hunter Police District after she failed to return.

Police and family hold serious concerns for Lynette as she lives with a medical condition that requires medication.

Lynette is described as being of Caucasian appearance, about 160cm tall, of slim build, with a tanned complexion and short grey hair.

She was last seen wearing a red and white sleeveless dress and sandals.

Lynette may be driving a 2018 silver Suzuki Vitara with NSW registration plates – LR 445.

“Is it necessary to do a pre-settlement inspection?”

IT’S natural to want to protect our possessions. When we make a purchase as significant as property, probably the most important single purchase we’ll make in our lives, we should really want to protect it. A pre-settlement inspection is the final step before paying the balance and taking full possession. Its purpose is to check the home and surroundings within the designated boundary so that you are confident the property and inclusions are just as when you purchased it: no post-purchase damage has occurred, all inclusions listed in the Contract of Sale such as window furnishings, floor coverings, air conditioners and dishwasher are present etc. You then confirm acceptance with your legal representative and the property settles. Property insurance should already be in place, having been taken out at Exchange of Contract, and you should now be ready to align your Contents Insurance with your move-in date. The risk in not doing a pre-settlement inspection is that, once you take possession, only to find damage has been done, or items missing, you have little recourse to claim compensation. That’s a risk I suggest is simply not worth taking.

And what have we done?

Another year over, a new one just begun.

AS we wrap up another year, it’s worthwhile to look back on where we’ve been and set goals for the new year ahead.

The year just seems to have flown by, especially with the chaos and uncertainty of the ever-present COVID-19 pandemic, lockdown 2.0 and the emergence of the Omicron strain.

Nevertheless, the recurrence of Christmas is often a joyful experience people look forward to, and this year, we need it now more than ever.

In the words of Charles Dickens, the man who more or less invented the Victorian Christmas, “But I am sure that I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round...as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely.”

My name is Alice Hennen and I am a contributor reporter for both Port Stephens and Myall Coast News Of The Area.

I started writing for this publication in March of this year, after seeing an advertisement for contributors in the paper.

My career in journalism has been a sporadic yet enjoyable one, having written previously for Newcastle Weekly and The Star.

My favourite stories to write are those about community events that just need that extra signal boost.

The little wins, the community jumble sales, the little things we sometimes don’t notice but make up the fabric and the good vibes of the neighbourhood.

The community issues that need attention brought to them.

Those whose voices often go unheard.

I recently covered the proposed deer cull in Raymond Terrace, where fierce debate is underway over whether the deer are icons of the local area or whether they are pests that need to be eradicated.

There were many good points made by both sides of the argument, and certainly a situation to keep an eye on.

It was an intensely interesting piece to write, and hopefully an interesting piece to read.

While Christmas can be a time of joy and excitement, even more so this year, it can also be a time of struggle and loneliness, particularly for those who don’t have family or who cannot see their family.

A Big Year for the Fingal Bay Probus Club

By Marian SAMPSON THE Probus Club of Fingal Bay is a small, mixed Probus Club that has been operating for 25 years in the Bay. There are meetings on the second Monday of the month at the Fingal Bay Sports Club.

The club is all about the members enjoying fun, fellowship and friendship – the essence of Probus - which is a club for retirees and semi-retirees.

The club arranges barbecues, wine appreciation sessions, morning teas, wine and dine lunches and dinners, a movie group, walks for pleasure, and interesting guest speakers who attend the monthly meetings.

“They included interesting and informative guest speakers such as Kerry Strydom, CEO of the Australian Cancer Research Foundation, Ian Farnsworth on life and planning in the RAAF and the proposed new museum for Port Stephens, supported by Chris Peters.

“Two of our foundation members spoke on the Club’s start and fun times of 25 years ago, and we found some excellent speakers among our members who started a Hasty History segment which

became very popular.

“They spoke about their lives - and there were some amazing stories!”

There was a Christmas in July lunch party which was organised but had to be delayed until November.

“Like many clubs, due to natural attrition, in the New Year we will welcome new members who will enjoy a club where you know all fellow members and can choose the events that interest you,” he said.

Our neighbours have gone away for three weeks, and they've asked me to water their plants. I thought I would also use the opportunity to take daily swims in their pool, but they have padlocked the gate (I guess as a safety measure).

They've given me their keys in case of an emergency, so I could easily unlock it.

With these high temperatures, it seems like a reasonable thing to have a quick dip after I build up a sweat watering their garden.

Dear Corrine,

A padlock seems to give a pretty clear message as to the status of your role in the neighbour's backyard.

I would assume that they are expecting you to maintain the hedge, water any potted plants, prune stray or dying branches, perhaps give the lawn a quick mow, and top up the bird bath.

The padlock sends a strong signal that they are not expecting you to be languishing in the pool on their inflatable flamingo (pina colada in hand), dragging your toes through the crystalclear water while the portable speaker blares out the best of 2021's Deep House and Chill Music, and a pool boy named Julio gives you the occasional neck massage and feeds you grapes.

I think they have given you the keys as a form of temptation, and you have been drawn to that temptation like a middle-aged woman wearing gardening gloves and nursing some RSI from pulling out one too many weeds in 35-degree heat while the dappled turquoise hue of their inground pool seduces you through the seamless glass pool fence.

What you could do is to accidentally throw a native animal (nothing too major, not a koala, maybe a lizard?) over the pool fence and then you would have an excuse to rescue it from drowning.

You could then legitimately unlock the fence and wade in the cool, calm water until you reach the poor, helpless wretch.

You could then contact your neighbours to let them know you had to use the pool key to save a drowning creature and it would be no trouble to add this duty to your gardening jobs as a lizard (or worse) finding its way into the filter box could be a real issue if left for too long.

Just make sure they don't have any CCTV cameras pointed at the pool, or you're just going to look like a sweaty psycho throwing native fauna into a chlorinated environment.

That's going to be a bad look, Corrine.

Port Stephens Women In Business Celebrate In Style

CHRISTMAS is being celebrated all over Port Stephens at the moment with different organisations taking different approaches on making their celebrations memorable and fun.

Port Stephens Women in Business (PSWIB) members met in late December for a fun Christmas celebration.

Fiona Brown, President of PSWIB told News Of The Area, “After a year that has seen the group have many of their monthly events on Zoom, it was wonderful to be able to connect in person.”

The ladies spent the afternoon reconnecting over games of barefoot bowls at Soldiers Point Bowling Club.

“Despite the challenges of the past year the group has held together strongly and looks forward to taking the learnings and experiences and offering more great events in 2022,” she said.

The group exists to connect, inspire and support women in business in the Port Stephens area.

There will be some vacant positions coming up at the AGM in February.

Busy B’s Support Local Kids In Need

By Marian SAMPSON PORT Stephens certainly has its share of groups that do good things in the community.

One that many may not know if is the Busy B's which was established about 30 years ago with a dozen members.

Jan Norgard of the Busy B’s told News Of The Area, “We now have close to 80 members and over that period of time have raised in the region of $250,000.”

Busy B’s is a registered charity and not-for-profit organisation and the money raised is donated to the various schools and organisations in this area that cater for the needs of children with physical and intellectual disabilities.

The club meets on the second Tuesday each month in the Community Centre Hall in Norburn Avenue, Nelson Bay. “There are various stalls, jams and pickles, craft, books, bric-a-brac and second hand clothing.

Packing the car, perfecting the playlist, selecting the snacks, and mapping the route to stop at as many country bakeries as possible that sell Australia’s best vanilla slice is just part of the magic of a road trip. In tonight’s series return, presenter Heather Ewart looks at how travel by road has evolved – from the beginnings of mass car ownership of the 1950s to the rise of the grey nomads hitting the highway in their caravans.

Heading off from the Oodnadatta Track in South Australia, Ewart shares some of her favourite drives to explore this country’s love affair with the road.

It’s episode two of season eight of the local version of I’m A Celeb, the show that incites schadenfreude (the feeling of satisfaction from another’s misery). A fresh bunch of homegrown celebrities have been taken into the “so-called jungle”. On their first morning in camp, reality is starting to settle in – after a night among snoring campmates, the celebrities have to contend with cold showers, rice and beans, and the long and short drop. It’s not long before the show’s gleeful hosts Chris Brown and Julia Morris turn up with a challenge – the insectinfested Hell Hotel trial.

It’s gloriously gruesome.

MEMBERS of the Tomaree Ladies Probus Club enjoyed their annual Christmas Party recently.

Julie McAlister told News Of The Area, “President Daphne Smith welcomed members and partners to their annual Christmas Luncheon at

Nelson Bay Golf Club.

“It was party, party, party time with ladies in bright Christmas outfits and most recipients taking home lucky door prizes.”

It was a great event enjoyed by all who attended.

“Special thanks went to Marilyn Jennings for her wine and dine organising, to Shirley

THE NSW Bronze Brooch, a golf croquet singles event for players with handicaps 7 to 10, was played at Maitland Croquet Club on 13-15 December 2021.

20 players from around the state were split into 2 blocks to play a qualifying round before the top 16 players played a final seeded knock-out competition.

The qualifying round was played as 13-point level play games while the

knock-out stage was played as 19-point level play games.

Liz Friend, Sherry Gordon and Rae Uptin entered from the Nelson Bay Croquet Club.

Liz finished 2nd in Block A with 8 wins from 9 games while Sherry also qualified for the finals with 4 wins.

Rae finished 3rd in Block B with 4 wins to qualify for the finals.

Chris Cox from Port Macquarie Croquet Club beat both Sherry and Liz

in the bottom half of the knock-out stage before losing 10-5 to Robyn Sim of Wollongong Croquet Club in the semi-final.

In the top half of the knock-out stage, Rae beat Marion Morahan of Pelican Croquet Club 10-7 in the other semi-final. In the final, Rae beat Robyn 10-8 to win the NSW Bronze Brooch.
