In a map updated by NSW Health, the statistics for the 2324 postcode (from Raymond Terrace to Karuah and Tea Gardens) have shown that over half the population have received at least one vaccine.

“50-59 percent of the 19,835 eligible residents are partially vaccinated, with 3039 percent fully vaccinated,” the data showed.

Stephens-Hunter Police District attended along with NSW Ambulance paramedics.

The male driver of the Ford Ranger utility was found suffering a gunshot wound.

He could not be revived and died at the scene, and has since been formally identified as 45-yearold David King from Tanilba Bay.

Police have been told a man was seen to exit the Ford Ranger and enter a white Hyundai Santa Fe shortly after the crash before the vehicle fled the scene.

A white Santa Fe was later located burnt out at Masonite Road, Heatherbrae. Police are investigating whether the vehicle is linked to the incident.

Two crime scenes were

established and were examined by specialist forensic officers.

Port Stephens-Hunter detectives – assisted by the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad – have established Strike Force Breve to investigate the circumstances surrounding the man’s death. Detectives are treating this as a targeted attack.

Sadly, we have seen more cases of COVID-19 in the Port Stephens LGA which were active in the community while infectious.

The Port Stephens LGA has now had 11 locally acquired COVID-19 cases in the last four weeks.

16,221 Covid-19 tests have been completed in that time.

The Myall Coast has continued to dodge the bullet, with the lockdown seemingly halting the virus’ spread into the region with the MidCoast LGA only having one case in the preceding 14 days prior to publication.

Health Minister Brad Hazzard said under the Public Health Order, health staff across the state must have a first dose of vaccine by 30 September 2021 and

be fully vaccinated by 30 November 2021, or at least have their second appointment booked to continue working.

“Many health workers in NSW are already vaccinated but if all of our staff are vaccinated it will provide greater protection for patients, visitors and other health staff,” Mr Hazzard said.

This also means that some of those working in jobs that require vaccination to continue to work may be forced into making the choice to take the AstraZeneca vaccine even if this is outside the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) recommendations.

“ATAGI recommends that the COVID-19 vaccine by Pfizer (Comirnaty) is preferred over COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca in adults aged under 50 years.

“COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca can be used in adults aged under 50 years where the benefits clearly outweigh the risk for that individual and the person has made an informed decision based on an understanding of the risks and benefits.”

There are concerns in the regions that if the Sydney lockdown is lifted for travel within NSW without the regions populations being able to be vaccinated that the regions will experience a spike in cases.

AS the lockdown lingers longer and the Prime Minister changes down a gear on the way that Australia will reopen, it is clear our leaders believe vaccination is the ticket out of the Covid crisis.

To encourage us all to roll our sleeves up the NSW Government has launched the next phase of its statewide COVID-19 advertising campaign aimed at encouraging people across NSW to get vaccinated.

New Crime Manager for the District

He visited the Northern Region Police Districts for many years as the Northern Region Professional Standards Manager before moving on to work for a brief period with the former Region Commander as Staff Officer and eventually became the Investigations Manager in the Newcastle Detectives.

Detective Inspector Dubojski is highly qualified for his new role as Crime Manager in the Port Stephens-Hunter Police District.

“Detective Inspector Dubojski has a very strong connection with the local community and took the opportunity to seek out the Crime Managers role through promotion.

“He is a passionate Police Officer and Detective striving to make a positive difference to the community and his workmates,” a representative from the Police District said.

Following a competitive recruitment process, newly promoted Crime Manager, Detective Inspector Mitch Dubojski has been welcomed to the Police District.

After joining the NSW Police Force in May 1997, he commenced operational duties at Hurstville in Sydney and later commenced his criminal investigation duties in Bankstown before moving onto Crime Agencies (State Crime Command).

Walk on the Wild Side

THE 30% rise in real estate prices in Tilligerry in just 12 months can be partly attributed to urban dwellers relocating to get away from the problems of the city to a more tranquil place close to the water and in harmony with nature.

Right now is the ideal time to explore our nature trails and boardwalks and there are reasons for this.

You see, spring has well and truly sprung out here with wildflowers in bloom and locked down locals can now get out of their homes and exercise while surrounding themselves with nature's bounty.

This, in turn, has a calming effect on the soul.

Bushfires have played a pivotal role, indeed a vital function in both making the bush bloom and protecting our homes from destruction.

It happened like this: Some two winters ago, a fire got away at Salt Ash and came our way.

It was a blessing in disguise as it got rid of the understorey fire fuel without getting into the tops of the trees.

In the following two summers, fires came our way

again, but went out when they hit the burnt out bushland.

Those very same broad acres are now in full bloom and have regenerated into a riot of colour.

Executive Producer of Farmer Wants A Wife, Judy Smart, told News Of The Area of plans for the new series.

“Next series we are looking to find farmers in regions we haven’t had farmers from in recent years.

“Port Stephens and the Myall Coast regions are definitely on our radar this year, with all the crops and boutique farms.

Curling up on the couch and tuning in to Rosehaven, we’ve all surely fantasised about moving to the fictional small town in Tassie and living a relatively uncomplicated life surrounded by pristine nature – and a handful of local shops, for good measure. Creators, writers and stars Celia Pacquola (pictured) and Luke McGregor have crafted witty and warm characters and situations which feel almost timeless, hinging on the relationship between best friends Daniel and Emma.

As this final season unfolds, it’s bittersweet. Tonight, Daniel and Emma are forced to get creative to sell a property, without revealing where it is to potential buyers. Barbara (Kris McQuade) also shares some big news.

The TV-watching show phenomenon, which has had 15 different offshoots around the world, returns tonight for its 14th Australian season. Fans have lapped up the TV-talk spectacle for the past six years, but there’s obviously something special about the fly-on-the-wall doco slash comedy when old stars decide to make a triumphant return after calling it quits. Life Jacket Reforms

IT’s simple – life jackets save lives on the water.

However, just as there was resistance to mandatory wearing of seat belts some boaties would prefer the wearing of life jackets to be optional.

Modern self-inflating life jackets are comfortable and can be worn without impeding movement.

The community is now being asked to give input on life jacket reform.

The proposed changes to lifejacket rules are designed to be simpler and easier to understand for NSW boaters, with the goal of driving increased wearing of lifejackets to save lives.

The community is invited to have its say on two options to simplify and expand lifejacket requirements on NSW waterways, as part of the draft Maritime Safety Plan 2026.

Minister for Transport and Roads Andrew Constance said more than seven out of ten people presumed drowned in recreational boating incidents, over the 10 years to 2019–20, were not wearing a lifejacket.

“Lifejackets are without a doubt the most important piece of safety equipment for survival in boating incidents where people are forced into the water,” Mr Constance said.

“We want to hear from NSW boaters on the two new lifejacket options that have been developed, because we need to make the law easier for people to understand and save more lives on our waterways.

“The draft Maritime Safety Plan 2026 will outline the NSW Government’s plans for maritime safety over the next five years, and support our goal of zero boating fatalities and serious injuries by 2056.”

Dine and Discover Extended

ONCE again, the Dine and Discover vouchers have been extended.

The incentive first kicked off in late March 2021, giving all NSW residents over the age of eighteen four $25 vouchers to spend- two ‘discover’ vouchers for use at cultural venues and two ‘dine’ vouchers to be used at hospitality venues.

Due to the ongoing uncertainty with restrictions and lockdowns across NSW, these vouchers have now been extended with an expiry date of 30 June 2022.

These vouchers have already been extended, with Treasurer Dominic Perrottet announcing an extension in June 2021 after more than half of the vouchers were left unused just weeks before they were due to expire.

New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian describes the initiative as a win-win for all.

“For too long because of COVID, we haven't been able to support these businesses, so it's a win for citizens and a win for businesses as it boosts their ability to receive people again as we move through COVID,” Ms Berejiklian said.

The vouchers can now be used at participating COVID-safe businesses across the state, seven days a week (excluding public holidays) and the dine vouchers are also redeemable for takeaway food.

Vouchers cannot be used on thirdparty food delivery sites such as Uber Eats, Menulog, Doordash or Deliveroo, cannot be used on alcohol, tobacco, gambling or online orders.

Each New South Wales resident over the age of eighteen is eligible to redeem their vouchers, which can be applied for and redeemed on the Service NSW website.

Centre for Maritime Safety Chief Bernard Carlon said the draft plan builds upon the achievements of the previous Maritime Safety Plan 2021, and incorporates the Safe System approach, which focuses on safe people, safe vessels and safe waterways.

“Each year, more than two million people explore our beautiful NSW waterways by boat and other watercraft, and we want to ensure they can continue to enjoy this popular activity in the safest possible way,” Mr Carlon said.

“Both options being proposed will save lives on NSW waterways and support our ultimate goal – to get to zero fatalities on NSW waterways by 2056.”

Local yachtswoman Cherylle Stone has good reasons to support the use of life jackets.

She told News Of The Area, “I think everyone in a small vessel should wear a lifejacket when the vessel is underway.

“I always wear one on my sailing catamaran when I am offshore and inshore if it is dark or I am crossing a bar.

“I fell overboard recently offshore while preparing my boat for a tow by Marine Rescue Iluka Yamba and am here to tell the tale.

On the weekend, I was flicking through social media. My husband was doing his 'essential exercise' with the dog. As I was mindlessly scrolling, a 'found dog' post turned up. I read the post because it was an adorable looking dog, and in fact very similar in looks to my own dog.

On closer inspection the dog had the same identifying white patch on its chest and I realised with horror that it was my dog.

I was about to respond when the writer said the owner had been found. On his return, I asked how the walk went and he said it was lovely. No mention of the missing dog!

Is this the start of a web of deceit?

They are like the Esme Watsons of former times, who used to peer out of their blinds and report all the strange goings on in the neighbourhood.

Now, though, they are splashed all over social media where every Tom, Dick and Harry can have their two-bobs' worth (gee this response is overloaded with vernacular - it may be due to the cheap hair dye that is currently seeping into my brain since everyone is now a DIY hairdresser).

Anyway, I think I'd let this one slide.

He was probably gazing out at the ocean, nostalgic for pre-Covid days, and the dog got sick of his moping and wandered off.

Much more difficult to handle than a curious dog are the unsolicited responses on social media to innocent posts.

No doubt it was full of things like: 'He shouldn't even have a dog if he can't keep an eye on it' and 'Unfortunately we noticed a lot of dog poo on the ground recently which we can't blame tourists for anymore' and 'two poofy-looking dogs and a real one were on the beach yesterday but I couldn't catch them', none of which related to your dog, but then had you in a spin about everyone else's problems including your own (since resolved) ones.

You did ask how the walk was, and his answer that 'it was lovely' was not a lie, but perhaps the (less criminal) judicious use of omission. You could add a tracker to his phone, but do you really want to know where he is every minute of the day, when 90 per cent of the time he's in the house?

Students to return to face-toface learning

STUDENTS across NSW will be returning to school in a staggered return in Term Four of this year.

In newly announced plan by The Department of Education and NSW Government, students will return to face-toface learning from Monday 25 October with the schedule as follows: from Monday 25 October- Kindergarten and Year 1, from 1 November- Years 2, 6 and the 2022 Year 12 cohort, from 8 November- Years 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9 and 10.

From 25 October, Year 12 will have fulltime access to school campuses and their teachers for support in their HSC exams.

The HSC exams will also be delayed until 9 November with a revised timetable to be released by NESA in early September.

These delays will not disadvantage any NSW students when applying for university.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the NSW Government is prioritising the safety and education of students through a sensible and managed return to school, with mandatory vaccines for school staff across all sectors from 8 November.

“The return to school plan provides parents, teachers and students with certainty and a path forward for the return to face-to-face learning.

“We know the last few months have been tough on the school community and we are deeply grateful to parents, teachers and students for the sacrifices you have made.

“Please continue to protect our students by getting vaccinated as quickly as possible,” Ms Berejiklian said.

A recent study of the public school workforce indicated that the majority of staff already had at least one dose of a vaccine.

This decision by the NSW Government is met with hesitation from many parents and members of the public, displaying concerns over the large percentages of positive COVID-19 cases in the young children as well as anger about mandatory vaccination.

Parks and Skateparks Reopen

PORT Stephens parks and skateparks have officially reopened after last week’s decision by the Council to close under Police orders allegedly due to breaches of the COVID-19 Public Health Orders.

At the same time that these areas were closed, outdoor gyms and equipment were left open and were able to be used by members of the community.

Arnott expressed frustration at this decision advocating for the younger people of Port Stephens who need access to these areas for exercise.

"It's important that local children are able to exercise during this lockdown, with their usual access to school playgrounds cut off.

"This is a simple solution to a simple problem.

“It's not fair to have skate parks and playgrounds barricaded up, but allow outdoor gyms to remain open.

WILD weather has seen the new playground at Robinson Reserve at Anna Bay inundated by rough seas.

The newly installed play equipment is situated in an area which local residents have reported as having been subject to inundations previously.

The equipment is already showing signs of rust as it endures the harsh

Smaller waterways make up three-quarters of the total waterway network within any given catchment and they are of great interest to local communities.

Roz’s active role includes collecting samples and testing the water.

Having been involved in Landcare Roz saw a need for volunteers to be a part of Waterwatch.

She undertakes monthly

testing of water quality and alongside other volunteers who perform similar tasks she helps to create a data bank which shows the health of the environment.

Waterwatch also conducts seasonal surveys of aquatic macroinvertebrates, to understand and monitor the health of rivers.

She, like other Waterwatch volunteers, upload the data which can be used to identify water quality issues including pollutants and erosion, creating a better understanding of what

Week 6 PBL Nominees

THE Positive Behaviour and Learning Program (PBL) is motivating local youth to aspire to be better.

These awards don’t go to the best sports star or the most academically minded.

They go to those who

demonstrate depth of character, spirit, honesty and kindness.

In week 6 of the PBL, students from nine schools in the western regions of the Port Stephens LGA were nominated for the awards.

From Irrawang High School, Caitlin Ping was nominated for

her commitment to her role as School Captain and her efforts within CAPA and consistently displaying PBL values.

Hunter River High’s Casey Edge stepped up and rescued an injured bird, delivering it to a vet on the way to school.

THIS week News Of The Area (NOTA) has two weeks of PBL nominees to celebrate.

Young people are notably undergoing hard times with school suspended for all but the children of essential workers and in home learning via the internet back on.

Learning from home with all its distractions is hard, but Seaham Public Schools Thomas Gretton has shown a strong commitment to the new way of learning.

Similarly Emma Davies showed that she was adaptable and resilient while using the internet for learning.

Whole some students were struggling with home learning Larni Kennedy of Seaham Public School stepped up and helped her fellow students.

CLIMATE Change is an issue that is impacting our lives now and will continue to evolve.

We are seeing more coastal erosion, more storms and more bushfires and we are losing species at an alarming rate, not just in Australia but around the world.

The Smart Energy Council has urged all State and Territory Governments to reject what they describe as the Morrison Government’s pro-coal, anti-solar agenda.

The Smart Energy Council say the Morrison Government has adopted a comprehensive pro-coal, anti-solar agenda, including; an annual $7 billion CoalKeeper subsidy that will allow unprofitable, ageing, polluting coalfired stations to operate well beyond their lifespan; and a new SolarStopper tax on solar farms (also known as the the Congestion Management Model.

Chief Executive of the Smart Energy Council, John Grimes, said, “These are the worst possible policies at the worst possible time.

“The world is literally burning

AS another heavy low pressure system moved up the Eastern Seaboard of Australia last week keen Port Stephens surfers donned the rubber and grabbed their shred sleds to chase a few portals.

With most beaches not handling the cones on offer from the massive Southerly pulse locals headed for their favourite socially distanced haunts along the ocean side of Shoal Bay. It was mostly carnage on offer for the younger generation but a few old heads made the most of the conditions.

Local softboard enthusiast and part-time citrus farmer Dane Loomes was on hand to surf and watch all the action across the Tomaree Peninsula in a COVID-Safe manner.
