By Tara CAMPBELL ON Monday 23 May, the Northern Region Police District hosted a professional development day dedicated to the investigation and response to ageing and disability abuse.

Assistant Commissioner Peter McKenna APM, NSW Police Force Corporate Sponsor for Ageing, Disability and Homelessness, opened the seminar which included Aged Crime Prevention Officers (ACPOs), members from regional and metropolitan Crime Prevention Units and detectives.

An additional three days of training dedicated to further developing the ACPOs skills and knowledge was conducted throughout the remainder of the week.

Boat Harbour Beach to permit dog access with seasonal-based restrictions FROM Page 1 Wednesday 4 August 2021, a trial was conducted permitting dogs off lead on Boat Harbour Beach.

A three-month extension to the trial was endorsed at the Council meeting on 26 October 2021 with the trial and survey both concluding 4 February 2022.

John Maretich, Port Stephens Council Asset Section Manager, said that the trial period has provided useful insight into the suitability and impact of dogs on Boat Harbour Beach.

“Boat Harbour Beach is small in size, a popular beach used by families and a designated informal boat launching facility.

“An existing off-lead dog exercise area is provided adjacent to the beach on Boat Harbour South Headland (Iluka Reserve).

“Recognising the characteristics of Boat Harbour Beach and the outcome of consultation, it is recommended for this site to be made a dog exercise area with restriction,” Mr Maretich said.

Dogs will be permitted on and off lead at all times during off-peak season from May to September and in peak season,

Dogs are prohibited outside of these hours.

An online survey was opened on Council’s Have Your Say platform and a community education event was conducted at Robinson Reserve, Anna Bay. 542 survey responses were received during the trial period.

345 (64 percent) respondents were residents of Boat Harbour, 132 (24 percent) were from the Tomaree Peninsula, 42 (eight percent) lived in other areas of Port Stephens and 28 (four percent) were from outside the LGA. Overall feedback was evenly split, with a decrease in support during the peak period (October – February).

“Additionally, 372 survey comments were received during the consultation period.

“The most common concerns raised by the community related to safety, hygiene, limited space and user experience.

“Council also received eight complaints outside of the survey relating to concerns around safety and loss of amenity,” Mr Maretich said.

NSW Government increases support payments for energy bills

PORT STEPHENS households experiencing difficulty paying their energy bills will be able to access up to $1,600 a year in help after Treasurer and Energy Minister Matt Kean increased support payments.

The Energy Accounts Payment Assistance (EAPA) program has helped 49,000 NSW households experiencing shortterm financial hardship with their energy bills.

Now each application will have its limit increased from $300 to $400, up to a maximum of $1,600 a year.

“Eligible customers can receive payment assistance of

up to $400 per application for electricity and up to $400 per application for gas bills twice a year,” Mr Kean said.

“This means the annual maximum limit of vouchers has increased from $1,200 to $1,600 per household.”

The boost to assistance for electricity and gas bills comes as the Australian Energy Regulator released its final determination today showing NSW energy customers on standing offers will face price increases from July 1.

price pressures on coal and gas.

Extreme weather events in NSW and Queensland have also had an impact on prices.

The extra assistance is part of a $330 million per year package the NSW government is providing which also includes energy rebates to around one million households.

“With cost-of-living pressures increasing, colder weather arriving and days shortening, we want to make sure households in NSW not only keep the lights on but keep their families safe, warm and comfortable,” Mr Kean said.

Eligible households can also apply for different rebates including the Low Income

Household Rebate, Gas Rebate, Family Energy Rebate, and Seniors Energy Rebate.

Around 800,000 households received the Low Income Household Rebate last year and 286,000 received the Gas Rebate.

Customers can see what they are eligible for by using the Service NSW Savings Finder at www.service.nsw.gov.au/ campaign/savings-finder, by phoning 13 77 88 or visiting a Service NSW centre.

“I encourage all households to shop around to find the best deal for their energy,” Mr Kean said.

General Manager resigns from role AFTER thirteen years with

Port Stephens Council, Wayne Wallis has resigned from his role as General Manager.

Mr Wallis said he’s stepping down from full time employment to begin working towards retirement.

“I will have completed 43 years of service in the local government industry this month and I’m especially proud of my past thirteen years at Port Stephens Council and what we’ve achieved as an organisation,” Mr Wallis said.

Port Stephens Council employs almost 600 staff, and delivers more than 50 individual services across the Port Stephens community.

“I’m very grateful for the opportunity to lead Port Stephens Council.

“It’s been a great pleasure to work with many of the best people in local government – a team with a strong work ethic, and culture of always striving

for better outcomes for its community.

“It has truly been a great place to work,” he added.

Mayor Ryan Palmer said that under Mr Wallis’ leadership, Port Stephens has grown from strength to strength.

“Over the past decade we've seen our community grow and flourish – there's been an investment in new infrastructure, improved services and innovative investments which have made Port Stephens Council one of the leading local government organisations across the state,” Mayor Palmer said.

“More recently, we’ve seen investment in the development of new plans and strategies that will shape the future design and direction of Port Stephens for years to come,” he added.

“I’m very thankful to my elected colleagues for the opportunities and challenges they have afforded me during my tenure as General Manager.

Cr Anderson said that the lack of these sanitary bins are a problem that no one wants to talk about, and affect both men and women.

“A lack of sanitary bins for men is a problem that nobody wants to talk about.

“In fact, The Continence Foundation estimates about one in four Australians suffer incontinence and, if you add in the fact that about one in six men develop prostate cancer, that means you have a good chance of needing to seek out a sanitary bin if you're a bloke,” Cr Anderson said.

Dr Michelle O’Shea, who has a PhD in organisation studies (gender equity), addressed her concerns during public access at the recent Council meeting.

"As someone who has done a lot of research into women's health, it is of great concern to me that Port Stephens Council does not provide sanitary bins

in the majority of its public toilets and in its high traffic areas.

"I am disappointed that there are very few of these bins, not only for women and girls but also men with prostate and incontinence issues, across the Port's public toilets.

“There are no other dignified ways to remove such products and this needs to change,” Dr O'Shea said.

Following the unanimous support for the motion, the General Manager will provide a report to Council to advise how many sanitary bins for both men and women are in Council’s public toilets and what toilet locations have them.

The report will also investigate proactive councils which are taking efficient action in sanitary hygiene and investigate the cost of placing sanitary bins for both men and women in Council’s public toilets across the local government area.

Calls for sanitary hygiene bins in Port Stephens

PORT Stephens Council will take action to address the lack of accessible sanitary hygiene facilities throughout the local government area.

In a notice of motion raised by Councillor Leah Anderson, Port Stephens Council was held accountable to the lack of sanitary disposal facilities in the Port Stephens region, raising awareness about the challenges regarding access to menstrual products, education about menstruation and periodfriendly sanitation facilities.

“Brand new sportsgrounds and amenities recently opened in Nelson Bay, however, not one sanitary bin has been installed.

“The nearby Nelson Bay Netball Courts are littered with girls and women and yet again, not one sanitary

Local Strengthening Grants recipients

A NUMBER of community organisations and groups have been awarded funding under the Local Strengthening Grants program by Port Stephens Council.

The Local Strengthening Fund aims to build sustainable local communities and environments, and enhance the wellbeing and development of the Port Stephens community.

The grant welcomes applicants from community groups and not-forprofit organisations seeking support for projects, activities and events that address community and environmental needs.

The successful recipients for round two of the grant include: • Warlga Ngurra Family and Community Hub - $6,000 for after school kids club for children aged five to thirteen years.

• Fern Bay Public School - $4,530 to create a Yarning Circle in the grounds of Fern Bay Public School with seating and native plants.

• Karuah Landcare - $6,000 to revegetate a section of Karuah

Foreshore in partnership with schools, community grounds and residents.

• Port Stephens Suicide Prevention Network- $3,000 for a Port Stephens Labyrinth (a cross-cultural, nondenominational place of reflection).

• Rivergum Grandparents - $6,000 for a day outing by Bus to the Australian Reptile Park with lunch.

• Tomaree Museum - $3,000 for the purchase of display cabinets and a diorama of Zenith Beach landing at Salamander Bay. Councillor Glen Dunkley said that these grants are awarded to worthy community groups and projects.

“It’s great to see such a wide range of community groups and community projects be awarded these grants, but one thing I do want to say is that it would be good to see more community groups put forward for these grants.

“We see so many good things come out of this funding and the best thing is that the projects don’t need to be complex or at a national level.

“I really encourage any community group to apply for the next round of funding in the Local Strengthening Grants program when it opens,” Cr Dunkley said.

It is predicted that round three of the funding will open in September.

Positive Behaviour for Learning in the community

By Marian SAMPSON THE Positive Behaviour for Learning program (PBL), which runs across our local schools, provides recognition to students for their actions.

This week we celebrate students that give more, stand up and show positive behaviour and learning tied to community values.

From Irrawang Public School, Amarlie-Jade Manton was nominated for her dedication and commitment to Aboriginal education and representing Irrawang Public School with pride at a Junior Aboriginal Education Consultative Group meeting.

Rylan Roach was recognised for his participation and being a wonderful leader of Raymond Terrace Public School, where he represented the school at the ANZAC Day memorial march.

Grahamstown Public School’s Makiah Green was recognised for being an outstanding

school representative at Rugby League Gala days, demonstrating excellent sportsmanship skills.

He made sure the ball was shared and encouraged less experienced players.

Irrawang High School’s Senior Drum Corp were recognised as a group for their commitment and outstanding contribution representing Irrawang HS in

two ANZAC Day services in the local community.

Bethany from Hunter River High made a personal sacrifice that will make a huge difference; donating her hair to the Wigs for Kids program, a truly selfless act.

The environment is important to our youth and Teleah Britton of Salt Ash Public School has been promoting recycling and

has been weighing rubbish to demonstrate how much waste goes to landfill.

Medowie Public School’s Kira-Lee Wright is respectful and responsible in the school office everyday by using her manners and by being in the right place at the right time.

inviting women across the state to shape the direction and priorities of the next NSW Women’s Strategy, with public consultation now open.

The NSW Women’s Strategy provides a policy framework to help improve the lives of women by addressing the structural issues that affect gender equality.

Minister for Women Bronnie Taylor said it’s important that the Strategy reflects the priorities and experiences of a diverse range of women and specifically invites women located in regional areas to provide feedback.

“Getting the next Strategy right relies on us understanding what is working well for women and what areas we need to focus on,” Mrs Taylor said.

“The more women we hear from, the better understanding we have of what we need to do to improve the lives of all women in our state, no matter their age, their background or their postcode.

“We’ve made incredible progress in improving

economic opportunity for women in NSW since the last strategy was released four years ago, but there is still work to be done to improve women’s health and wellbeing and increase women’s participation in our communities.”

The strategy will expand upon the pillars discussed in the 2018-2022 Strategy, being economic opportunity and advancement, health and wellbeing and participation and empowerment.

“The NSW Government’s Women’s Economic Opportunities Review will consider how to improve women’s economic participation and propose reform opportunities to address structural and non-structural barriers to entry and participation, and support parents to be able to balance work and life,” a representative from Women NSW said.

The second pillar identifies the range of health needs required to maximise women’s physical, social and economic potential.

“Health and wellbeing deliver quality of life and underpins social and economic participation.

“And while the women of NSW live longer and healthier

lives than their predecessors, and many health indicators are showing an upward trend, there are still areas we can improve,” Women NSW said.

The third pillar of participation and empowerment is broad, with the intent to be applicable for a number of different roles and activities.

“This pillar is broad, ranging from the levels of representation of women in key leadership roles to visibility in public life; from participation in sport and other social activities to access to secure social networks.

“It considers how we change the forces that are currently leading to negative attitudes towards women and girls and change the conversation publicly to enable women to safely engage in public and economic life,” Women NSW said.

Public consultation is open to all women, and any individuals or organisations that work closely with women.

Taylors Beach residents call for maintenance

By Tara CAMPBELL PORT Stephens Council will provide a report on the maintenance of Taylors Beach.

On Thursday 5 May, Taylors Beach Residents Committee invited all East Ward Councillors to a meeting in which they acknowledged their feelings of neglect by the Council.

In a notice of motion raised

by Councillor Leah Anderson at the recent Port Stephens Council meeting, Cr Anderson asked the Council to provide a remedy to these feelings.

“The residents of Taylors Beach feel that Taylors Beach looks tired, they feel neglected and have issues that they want the Council to address,” Cr Anderson said.

issues was raised including the requests for electricity to the rotunda and a desire for a walking path along Taylors Beach Road.

“The Committee advised Council that residents and visitors have to walk on the side of a windy and dangerous road (that also requires pothole maintenance) and push bike riders also have concerns for their safety,” Cr Anderson said.

Residents also called for the extension of the concrete boat ramp, as it is a popular ramp for locals, yet residents advise that people are often getting stuck in the sand.

The community also requested road maintenance, particularly repairs of the road down to the boat ramp where the roadside is cracked and falling away due to the number of people taking boats down to

the ramp.

One particular issue that Councillor Anderson addressed was the Norfolk Island Pines in the area.

“Some of the Norfolk Island Pines are dangerous with falling branches.

“Recent events had branches on one resident's pergola and a shade sail potentially saved the family from injury when they fell,” she

said.

The Natural Systems team is currently investigating the health and safety of the Norfolk Island Pines along the front of residents’ houses.

“I’m requesting the General Manager to provide a report on the maintenance concerns of Taylors Beach and how Council will fund the above requests from tired Taylors Beach locals,” Cr Anderson said.

Fire Appliances The NSW Rural Fire Service is working with Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC) to improve the protection of firefighters through the better design of fire appliances.

Over the past eighteen months, MUARC has been conducting a detailed analysis of the NSW RFS vehicle fleet, as well as safety-related data, to help identify key risks that will be used to focus the design of suitable solutions.

It has now reached the next key stage of the project and the NSW RFS is seeking input from members on vehicle safety via an online survey.

Marine Rescue Lemon Tree Passage On the afternoon of Saturday 28 May, Marine Rescue Lemon Tree Passage assisted a runabout with water in its fuel that had broken down near some oyster leases at Mud Point (near Soldiers Point).

Marine Rescue were prompt to respond and quickly had the distressed vessel on tow.

The runabout and its crew of two adults and two children were towed to the Soldiers Point Boat Ramp.

Wild Mushrooms The wet weather in NSW has resulted in wild mushrooms popping up everywhere.

The NSW Poisons Centre has seen a recent spike in both the number of calls and subsequent hospital presentations related to people eating wild mushrooms with many of these calls from people who had foraged for

mushrooms.

Australia is home to many poisonous wild mushrooms and some like the Death Cap mushroom can lead to organ damage and death if ingested.

Many poisonous mushrooms in Australia look similar to edible wild mushrooms found in Europe or Asia and NSW Poisons Control says that cooking or boiling poisonous mushrooms does not make them safe to eat.

“Stay safe and only eat store-bought mushrooms.

“To prevent children ingesting wild mushrooms, check your garden or playground areas and remove and dispose of any mushrooms which have appeared,” the Poisons Control Centre said.

Anyone who has been exposed to wild mushrooms should call the Poisons Centre on 131126 for further advice.

FluBot Scams Since August 2021, many Australians have been getting scam text messages about missed calls, voicemails or

deliveries.

Scamwatch reports that they have received over 16,000 reports of these scams.

These scams have also already been a problem overseas in 2021.

The text messages ask you to tap on a link to download or access something.

There are many variants of the Flubot text messages, but often they ask you to download an app to track or organise a time for a delivery, hear a voicemail message, or

view photos that have been uploaded.

However, the message is fake, there is no delivery, voicemail, or photos uploaded and the app is malicious software called Flubot.

Android phones and iPhones can both receive texts from the Flubot.

Scamwatch reminds all residents that if you receive one of these messages, do not click or tap on the link and instead, delete the message immediately.

Emergency Services Update

IT’S time for your weekly emergency services update for Port Stephens.

Motor Vehicle Accidents On the morning of Friday 27 May, fire and rescue crews attended a single vehicle motor vehicle accident with one person trapped in Salamander Bay. A crew of rescue operators safely extricated the patient with the assistance of NSW Ambulance, NSW Police Force and Anna Bay Rural Fire Brigade.

A representative of Fire and Rescue NSW Station 402 Salamander Bay reminded residents to be cautious on the road.

“This is the second motor vehicle accident we have attended this week and it’s a timely reminder to please slow down and take care driving on our roads,” they said.

Salt Ash Crash There was a two-vehicle crash in Salt Ash on Sunday 29 May on Richardson Road between Medowie Road and Nelson Bay Road at approximately 10:24 am.

Emergency services attended the scene and worked to assist all those involved.

Be safe not sorry this winter

THIS year’s NSW Rural Fire Service Winter Fire Safety Campaign’s theme is ‘Be Safe, Not Sorry’.

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) Commissioner Paul Baxter says that this theme is essential following NSW Brigades attending 3,502 home fires last year.

“Please ensure you have a

home fire escape plan so your children know what to do if a fire breaks out.

“It’s also important to fireproof your home as much as possible by having working smoke alarms,” Commissioner Baxter said.

NSW Rural Fire Service Assistant Commissioner Ben Millington said there are steps residents can take to prevent a fire from breaking out in their

home.

“It can be as simple as keeping flammable objects a ‘metre from the heater’, not leaving cooking unattended and not using outdoor heating or cooking equipment inside,” Assistant Commissioner Millington said.

They certainly know how to have a great time together!

Recently the group caught up for a BBQ where the sun shone, umbrellas were thankfully still left in the cars, tables were spread with cloths and the barbeque was fired up.

fires in 2021.

Last winter there were 953 residential fires, including: 359 kitchen fires, 98 bedroom fires, 81 chimney/fireplace emergencies and 69 living room fires.

North Arm Cove and Carrington Local Community Plan

IN mid-2020 MidCoast Council instigated development of a local community plan for the North Arm Cove and Carrington communities.

Council then formed a steering group of North Arm Cove residents to develop the plan.

A draft of the plan has now been completed by the steering group and feedback is currently being sought on the draft plan.

Bob Reid, President of the North Arm Cove Community Association, says that they are seeking feedback from North Arm Cove and Carrington residents.

Rural Financial Counselling Service extended

DROUGHTS, floods, fires and climate change are all impacting our rural primary producers and their families.

Last week, free financial planning and support services for primary producers was extended, with the NSW Government committing to the continuation of the Rural Financial Counselling Service.

Minister for Agriculture and Western NSW Dugald Saunders said the Rural Financial Counselling Service will continue to help farmers deal with the impacts of a tough few years, while also securing several jobs in regional NSW. “This announcement means Rural Financial Counsellors will remain on the ground to help primary producers affected by the recent severe flooding,” Mr Saunders said.

“Our primary producers have endured an onslaught of

natural disasters, biosecurity threats and COVID-19 over the last few years, and this has highlighted the financial impacts and challenges faced when these adverse conditions occur.

“The Rural Financial Counselling Service provides free, independent and confidential assistance, so people can improve their business decision-making process and preparedness practices.

“I am thrilled to announce an additional $5 million over the next three years for the program, which will help the sector adapt to our volatile climate and improve economic, environmental and social resilience.”

The Rural Financial Counselling Service has assisted farmers, fishers, forestry growers and harvesters experiencing, or at risk of, financial hardship for 30 years.

For the Port Stephens and

Myall Coast communities, cattle growers and fishers are among many that have been able to access the service.

“There are 50 Rural Financial Counsellors working in our regional communities across the state, who are undertaking immediate and longterm financial planning, succession planning, farm debt mediation and guiding people who need to access government assistance,” Mr Saunders said.

“Ensuring this vital service will be readily available at a local level is essential to building business support networks and helps producers strengthen their knowledge and operations.”

The new commitment will see funding of the Rural Financial Counselling Service continue through to 2025.

The team of Cue and McCartney who were well behind their opponents of Tinsley/ Phillips for most of the match somehow found the score at 20 all on the last end.

The extra end they played resulted in a win for the McCartney team by 1 shot.

NELSON Bay qualified for the Division 3 2022 Golf Croquet State Pennants Finals from the Hunter region.

The finals were played Sunday 22 - Monday 23 May, but had to be transferred from Jamberoo to Manly because the wet weather meant the Jamberoo courts were closed.

Even so, the finals were played in constant rain making the conditions challenging.

The finals were played as a full round-robin series between Canberra Green, Manly Sapphire, Marrickville and Nelson Bay. For the final, the team comprised Rob Batho and Sherry Gordon playing singles and Faby Batho & Jane Scorer playing doubles.

The team got off to a great start beating the 2021 champions Canberra 3-0, only to lose narrowly 1-2 to Manly Sapphire playing on their home courts.

LENGTH OF SETTLEMENT “How much flexibility can I ask for in my settlement date?”

I’M assuming you haven’t exchanged contracts yet. Once you have, then the settlement process is usually the last hurdle you’ll have to jump before the keys to your new property are in your hand.

While you’re in the negotiation phase you’ll see that your Contract of Sale usually includes a clause clarifying the settlement as taking place 42 days (6 weeks) from exchange of Contracts.

Time to reflect as Australia commemorates National Sorry Day

FOR some living in our communities, the Stolen Generations are a sad and tragic part of their personal history.

On this year’s National Sorry Day, which also marks the 25th anniversary of the tabling of the Bringing Them Home Report in the Australian Parliament, the Kinchela Boys Home (KBH) survivors, their descendants and families are calling on all Australians to work with them to close the gap within the gap.

“This disadvantage extends to our descendants who also consistently experience poorer health and social outcomes,” Uncle Richard Campbell, a KBH survivor and Secretary of the Kinchela Boys Home Aboriginal Corporation said.

“We are making changes with our truth telling but change isn’t happening fast enough.

‘We are the invisible gap that will be left behind.”

Stolen Generations survivor-led organisations like KBHAC are concerned this disadvantage will persist as closing this gap wasn’t a focus of any of the seventeen targets of the National Agreement on Closing the Gap. To ensure this gap doesn’t widen, KBH survivors and KBHAC are calling on all Australians to invest in Stolen Generations survivor-led solutions that will result in intergenerational healing and breaking the cycle of multigenerational disadvantage that they and their families live with.

Uncle Michael ‘Widdy’ Welsh, #36, KBH Survivor and Chairperson of KBHAC, said for the KBH survivor community, the first step Australians can take to support its multigenerational healing vision is to invest in KBHAC’s ownership of the KBH site and the site’s transformation into a site of national truth telling and healing through the creation of a centre for truth-telling, survivor stories, and healing.

“We and our children and families deserve better,” Uncle Widdy said.

“We have the right to heal and the right to resources to rebuild our family structures.

“With proper investment, our solutions to healing intergenerational trauma will succeed.”

KBH was one of the most notorious Stolen Generations institutions.

Between 1924 and 1970, 400-600 Aboriginal boys were forcibly removed from their communities and culture and placed in the ‘care’ of KBH. There they were exposed to routine acts of emotional, physical and sexual abuse.

They were stripped of their names and given numbers; if they used their names, they were punished.

On top of regular, indiscriminate beatings, the boys received no love, kindness or compassion, and were used as slave labour on vegetable and dairy farms.

"We never knew who we were,” said Uncle Lester Maher (#11).

“I never knew my mother. I didn't know my father.

“Our language was taken from us.

“If we tried to use any other Aboriginal language at Kinchela we were bashed.

“A lot of the locals who were driving past the home saw monkey bars and happy little kids, but they didn’t realise what was going on behind closed doors and the way we were being treated.

“There was no love there, there was no family.

“It was a place of rules and regulations, a place of punishment.

“We didn’t do anything wrong yet they called us inmates. We were in prison.” he said.

KBH survivors have long fought for recognition of what happened at the KBH site.

In 2012, the site was finally listed on the NSW State Heritage Register, and in 2013 it was listed as an Aboriginal Place under the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Act 1974.

“My love in my heart, as a kid, is still in that bloody home,” said Uncle Roger Jarrett.

“It’s a fact, and returning the ownership to KBH survivors is going to allow me to return the love that I lost in that place.

“Just the thought of going there (KBH) makes you feel a little bit better than you were before – giving you a feeling that you achieved something – I achieved my last little bit of pain easing, you know?” he said.

This survivor-led vision to make a space for recognition and healing will be the first of its kind to address the legacy of violence against Stolen Generations survivors and communities, not only as an exhibition of this painful history but also as a living force that must be confronted by people today so it never happens again.

The KBH site is of great cultural significance, not only to the KBH survivors and their descendants, but to all Stolen Generations, and to the non-Indigenous community.

This fact has been formally recognised by the placement of the KBH site onto the World Monument Fund’s 2022 Watch as one of 25 heritage sites of global, extraordinary

Dear Roger, I am more adept at the reasons behind people crowing at all hours of the day, so it is hard for me to assess the reason for the rooster's alleged constant noise. I, too, was under the impression that roosters crow to signal the start of the day, which is appealing, but this rooster is like an alarm clock with an overused snooze button.

Let's look at it from the rooster's perspective.

He may be alerting the hens to danger (the danger of a neighbour named Roger wielding an axe, for example). Or he may be crowing about his living conditions. Perhaps he needs a harem of hens to exhaust himself with. Clearly, though, we can't leave the solution up to the rooster.

The problem will need to be solved by your neighbour and so here are some suggestions that you can leave in his letterbox (using words cut from the newspaper, if you want to add a bit of intrigue). There are invasive options such as a rooster collar that doesn't choke the rooster, but restricts his ability to crow with such intensity. There is also the option of surgery.

Your neighbour could start with a small surgery that reduces the rooster's ability to crow, or move down the body to castration so he has nothing to crow about. It all sounds rather costly and extreme though. Best of luck. I much prefer the gentle clucking noise that hens make.

I hope this irritating cock-a-doodle-do subsides in the very near future.

“I really think this will bring this community together.”

The Kinchela Boys Home Aboriginal Corporation is a survivor-led Stolen Generations organisation dedicated to improving the wellbeing of those impacted by removal.

KBHAC has championed truth-telling to disclose what happened at the Kinchela Boys Home and raise awareness about its significance to survivors, their families, and communities.

Port Stephens Family and Neighbour Centre has stated in relation to Sorry Day, “We know that today across Australia, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children are still being removed from their families at much higher rates than that of nonIndigenous children.

“We also know that the child protection system is heavily weighted towards separation over prevention and early intervention.”

In 2019, to coincide with commemorations of NAIDOC Week, proud Worimi man Jacob Ridgeway released a haunting song called ‘Bullyman’ about his Aunty’s experience during the stolen generations.

TO their credit, three Soldiers Point Bowls teams made it to the State Finals held at Ettalong Bowling Club last week. The club’s first team of Daniel Clarke, Warren Shipley and Terry Antram won two out of three matches in the State Triples championship.

It was only a one shot loss to Narrandera in a rain affected match that cost them a semi-final place.

In the Seniors Triples, the team of Mark Sheppard, Kevin Scott and Billy Ahoy beat Cootamundra but lost to Westport and, with a bye in the next round, also missed out on the semi.

The Reserve Triples team of Pete Smith, Henry Rann and Rob Nash beat North Sydney and Umina by large margins but were well beaten by a strong Coonabarabran team so also just missed out on the semi-final.

The team gave tribute to Mark Hayne, their previous skip who had guided them to the State Finals.

It was a frustrating two days for the club’s three teams who had the consolation of having won most of their matches.

New bowlers are welcome at the Bowls Club where they can receive free coaching.
