Tomago businesses have shown a diverse ability to deliver on technology and advanced manufacturing, reaffirming that the Hunter is a hub for excellence in design and manufacturing of high end products.

Investing in the region and making it home is Energy Renaissance.

Energy Renaissance, Australia’s first lithium-ion battery manufacturer, has announced that it will build Renaissance One, a new A$28 million battery manufacturing facility in Tomago.

The company plans to produce batteries that are safe, affordable and optimised to perform in hot climates.

batteries can be used to power infrastructure, buildings, businesses and homes.

“We have settled on Tomago as the site of our first plant, construction will commence and the plant is scheduled for completion in 2021,” said Mark Chilcote, Managing Director of Energy Renaissance.

The 4,000 sqm purpose-built facility will be constructed by local property developer ABT Morton.

The plant will have an initial battery production capacity of 66MWh per

annum, with plans to scale its Australian operation to 5.3GWh of energy storage per annum with an additional investment of more than $200 million.

“Over 1,700 direct jobs will be created during the construction and operational phase and another 6,500 indirect jobs will be generated for the benefit of the Hunter.

“The Hunter region has all the right skills, natural resources, expertise and an abundance in solar energy for us to develop a successful battery manufacturing business in Australia,” Chilcote said.

While some of the batteries will stay in

Australia it’s expected that more than half of the batteries produced at Renaissance One will be exported through the Port of Newcastle.

The Federal Government provided a co-funded grant of $246,625 through the Advanced Manufacturing Growth Centre to Energy Renaissance.

This has been used to accelerate research and development as it starts to manufacture batteries locally.

Patron Senator for the Hunter Region, Hollie Hughes, congratulated Energy Renaissance on its investment in the

Hunter during a groundbreaking ceremony at the Tomago site.

“Energy Renaissance will make clean and affordable energy more accessible and create greater energy security for Australia and our neighbouring countries.

“Once Renaissance One is operating at capacity, it will be able to provide - in the space of a year - enough batteries to power every public school, hospital, fire station, SES unit and new homes built in Australia.

“That’s reassuring because Australia will be able to rely on its own source of renewable

energy in the very near future,” Senator Hughes said.

Hughes went on to say that the company’s investment in the local economy will support the Hunter region and help lead Australia’s economic recovery.

The Federal Government’s Technology Investment Roadmap has singled out the potential for Australia to be a world leader in the investment for renewable energy.

The group ensured that the seating and venue was set up to fully comply with Covid-19 Protocols in the Medowie Community Centre Banksia Hall.

The event for Probus 2020 provided a fun time, maintaining the mantra of Probus in Fun, Fellowship and Friendship.

Groups of four per table vied for the top honour as Trivia Masters.

After the 30 questions were assessed by the two scrutineers, Daphne and Dawn, there were two tables equal.

A series of tie breakers were asked and after four tie breakers, one table was declared the Trivia Masters of Medowie Probus Club, those four being Kevin, Jennifer, Reg and Lyle, who were presented with their prizes of Gift Vouchers.

Members enjoyed the trivia event so much that

they are already asking for more.

The laughter and banter as questions were asked proved to be very entertaining for all.

Medowie Probus Club meets on the third Wednesday each month at 10.00 am at the Medowie Community Centre, Ferodale Road Medowie.

To celebrate, the Combined Probus Club of Medowie arranged a Trivia Day to celebrate Probus 2020.

Appeal for information after child approach in Medowie

POLICE are appealing for information after reports of a child approach in the Hunter region.

About 5.40pm on Thursday 23 October, a seven-year-old boy was walking in Willow Close, Medowie, when a man riding an orange and black motorbike pulled up beside him.

Police have been told the male rider asked the boy to get on the bike.

He refused and walked away.

The man then conducted a U-turn and drove out of Willow Close in an unknown direction.

The incident was reported to officers from Port Stephens-Hunter Police District who commenced an investigation.

As inquiries continue, police would like to speak to a man who may be able to assist with their inquiries.

The man is only described as having greyish coloured hair and wearing a khakicoloured back-pack.

Police are appealing to anyone who might have been in the Medowie area on the day and either saw the motorbike or has dash-cam footage, to come forward.

Inquiries are continuing.

By Marian SAMPSON MEMBERS of the Probus Club of Fingal Bay enjoy their wine when part of the special functions at favourite restaurants, or to enhance a beachside barbecue, but the clubs wine appreciation afternoons are slightly different.

These events are held under the practised eye of Ross Jennings.

The recent gathering was limited in numbers thanks to social distancing, but very rewarding.

Julia Redlich told News Of The Area, “Assembling at Ross’s home and on a delightful patio backed by National Park, members were presented with a notepad and pen for judgement and comments before, to help assess a selection of red and white wines.”

Glasses for tasting as well as those for refreshing water accompanied a selection of nibbles to cleanse palates between the challenge of the wines, each bottle suitably disguised before pouring.

Incredible In Nature

By Mitchell LEES PORT Stephens’ land and seascapes are regularly captured by keen local and visiting photographers, but what about the animal inhabitants that call those spaces home?

With the social media feeds connected to the region sharing content centered around the coastal facade of non-stop brunch and endless sun, you’re usually hard pressed to see the real wildlife portrayed in pictures.

For Mat Spillard of Corlette a passion for the preservation of nature drives him to spend many hours traversing the bush to share the images he captures of nature in action.

Mat explains that for him the thrill is in being able to witness the wide variety of species that call Port Stephens home.

“We have an amazing and diverse range of birdlife and other fauna that inhabit the region of Port Stephens,” said Mat. “You’d be surprised at what you can see when you take the time to pause and look up around you all along the Tomaree Peninsula and

“I think this region has a lot to offer in making sure that these creatures are protected well beyond our generations.”

On one of Mat’s recent ventures into the Mambo Wetlands he captured the circle of life in action when he witnessed a six-foot Goanna stalk out the nests of some Little Pied Cormorants.

“I was at one of my

favourite shooting spots when I heard a rustle in the bushes next to me,” said Mat. “At first I was wary thinking it was a snake, but then I saw a huge Goanna skim down the embankment and into the water.

“It was bee-lining for the nests of some Cormorants and was submerging itself in the lagoon to evade detection.

“We were really treated to the aircraft formation consisting of the Worimi Hornet, Wirraway, Kittyhawk and Wedgetail,” said Phillip.

“The Worimi Hornet has WOFF Waters name on the aircraft with traditional indigenous artwork.

“It looks magnificent!”

The artwork on the ‘Worimi’ Hornet depicts a Kilyarr Kilyarr, the Wedgetail Eagle, which signifies the powerful presence of the bird of prey over Australia's skies, lands and seas.

Port Stephens Community Arts Centre Reopens

MEMBERS of the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre are back in action after a long shutdown.

Meryl Miller of the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre told News Of The Area, “It’s so exciting to be open once more.

“Being closed to the public for the last seven months provided Port Stephens Community Arts Centre members with the opportunity to refresh and paint interiors.”

To coincide with the reopening, the creative members of the centre have exceeded all expectations by bringing in spectacular new works to fit the theme of the opening exhibition of Abstract Modern.

Also on exhibition is a combination of Watercolour Paintings and Pottery.

“The Hall has a special opening exhibition where all our members were encouraged to provide one item.

“This is an exciting display with and array of craft pieces created by our groups: Bonsai, Creative Textiles (Fusion), Embroidery, Handicraft, Life

Drawing, Mosaics, Paper Craft, Patchwork, Pottery, Printing, Painting, Quilling, Spinning and Weaving, and Woodwork,”

she said.

From 21 October to 4 November the centre will hold its annual Quilt Raffle, with the

stunning “Floral Fantasy” on display.

Tickets will be available at the sales desk.

Tickets purchased before forced closure will be included in the raffle draw.

The 350 plus talented

members of the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre are looking forward to seeing people enjoy their creations.

In line with the reopening, the garden café is also scheduled to open during November.

Admission to the Gallery,

which is located near the entrance to Neil Carroll Park at Nelson Bay, is free.

The Gallery is open to the public from 10-4 pm daily, but closes at 1pm on a Sunday.

Murrays Brewery Employee Wins Scholarship

A PORT Stephens local is one of twelve recipients of an event management scholarship.

Catherine Cusack, Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, today announced that Joe Williams from Nelson Bay is the successful recipient of a scholarship in a Diploma of Event Management, funded by the NSW Government.

“The initiative is part

of the NSW Government’s $6 million Regional Conferencing Strategy and Action Plan, which includes a partnership with Meetings & Events Australia (MEA),” Catherine Cusack, Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter said today.

“I am delighted to announce that Joe is 1 of 12 recipients who will benefit from this scholarship program which aims to upskill and create more job opportunities for rural and

regional NSW communities,” Ms Cusack said.

Joe is an employee at Murrays Brewery at Bob’s Farm.

Murray Howe of Murrays Brewery told News Of The Area, “We are tremendously pleased for Joe, she is a very valued member of our team at Murrays and in my opinion the scholarship could not have gone to a more worthy recipient.

“It’s fantastic to see this happening in our local

community and Joe will I am sure do the area proud,” he said.

Recipient, Joe Williams was thrilled to receive the scholarship and said it was an amazing opportunity to build her career in Event Management.

“I am new to this industry and my goal is to make a difference within my community and support small businesses across our region.

“This scholarship will

give me the knowledge and network to build on the Hunter regions already growing tourism industry,” said Ms Williams.

Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney, Stuart Ayres, said the business events sector presents a major opportunity for the visitor economy of regional NSW, particularly as we steer our path to recovery.

“We know that the best way forward is helping to

create more jobs and these scholarships will do exactly that - giving people the tools and extra support needed to kick start their careers in the field of event management.”

The Minister congratulated the recipients who were selected by a panel, including representatives from the NSW Government’s tourism and major events agency, and Destination NSW.

Dancers dazzle in tap test

IT was all smiles at the Dance 'N Dazzle Studio in Medowie recently, as a group of young locals passed their Les Griffith Tap Dancing Association (LGTDA) Examinations with flying colours.

It has been a challenging year for the young dancers, with Covid-19 restrictions meaning they were unable to attend lessons for four

and a half months.

During the Covid-19 shutdown, studio principal Corynne Darcy offered free online lessons to all existing Dance ‘N Dazzle students.

While circumstances for examination preparation were not ideal, Corynne is pleased to report her young dancers did her proud.

“I’m proud to say they all passed with fantastic results.

“Each of the girls put in plenty of extra practice in order to be ready to perform in these exams and extra free lessons were offered to support families financially,” said Corynne.

Students were awarded with a certificate, report and a medal for their efforts.

“This helps improve the dancers technique, and advance their tap knowledge as well as work towards accreditation.”

Students completed exams in Pre-Test 1, Test 2, Test 3, Silver Medal and Intermediate grades in 2020.

Intermediate is the fourteenth level of tap exam and the second last exam to complete before dancers can attempt their Teaching Diploma in the discipline.

Dance ‘N Dazzle Studio is celebrating its 25th year in Medowie this year and are planning for a celebration in late November.

“Although we were unable to hold our mini concert, many eisteddfods, public

performances and classical and Jazz examinations, we were thrilled to be able to still hold our tap exams.

“We are now working towards our Covid-Safe Concert, with a limited audience, at the end of November.

Corynne hopes the concert will help her young dancers end their tough year on a high.

“The children have been thrilled to get costumes and be able to dress up and can’t wait to dance their hearts out for their families.

“It is our goal to give children something to look forward to after such a difficult year.”

Safety Boost for Port School SAFETY for students at Hinton Public School will be boosted by one of 98 new school crossing supervisors rolling out across the state in the coming months, under the NSW Government’s $18.5 million commitment to improve student safety.

“Hinton Public School was one of 96 schools across the state preparing to welcome a new school crossing supervisor,” Catherine Cusack, Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter said.

“The new supervisor will monitor children at the crossing on Paterson Street, Hinton as they walk to and from school,” Ms Cusack said.

“We look forward to welcoming our new school crossing supervisor over the coming months as they join about 1300 others across the state helping to keep primary school students safe.

“Recruitment for this position will open shortly, and I strongly encourage dedicated people interested in serving their community to apply.”

Acting Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said the NSW Government was really putting the spotlight on road

safety for the regions’ youngest road users who were still getting used to the road rules.

“In January last year we announced an expanded criteria, which would see 300 new school crossing supervisors fast-tracked for primary schools across the state, so that even more students could safely cross the road on their way to and from school,” Mr Toole said.

“I’m pleased that of the 98 new positions, 38 of them will be in regional schools, including at ones that haven’t had a crossing supervisor before.

“Our school crossing supervisors are part of a suite of measures to keep kids safe, including reduced speed limits in school zones, high-visibility safety treatments like signs, “dragon’s teeth” road markings and flashing lights.”

Most school zones are in effect from 8am to 9.30am and 2.30pm and 4pm when higher fines and demerit points apply.

Once the new batch of 98 are in place it will take the total of new school crossing supervisors to 267.

Stride4Stroke is coming LAUNCHIING World Stroke Day October 29 and continuing throughout November Across the country, people are getting ready to step out in their active wear and work up a sweat by taking part in Stride4Stroke.

Participants choose their own activity goal and complete it during November. Stride4Stroke encourages people to reduce their own stroke risk by getting active while raising funds for vital Stroke Foundation programs, supporting those living with stroke and their families.

For many participants, Stride4Stroke is a great

incentive to kick-start healthy living habits, which may have waned during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic or winter.

More than 3.1 million Australians are not getting any exercise, increasing their stroke risk.

Stroke is one of Australia’s biggest killers and a leading cause of disability More than 80 percent of strokes are preventable.

When renting or living in a share house it can be difficult to add personal flair to your space if you have any intention of seeing your bond again. Interior design guru Tara Dennis has devised three stylish and easy fixes to make any house feel like home. Meanwhile, it might seem like lockdown has got the best of chef Karen Martini (pictured). Her coffee and pepper-spiced chicken with pineapple and mint salad sounds like the result of a kitchen experiment gone wrong, but Martini assures us they make a surprisingly delicious combo.

For even the most confident chefs, it must be intimidating to walk into the MasterChef kitchen knowing their place in the competition is at stake. For the tiny talents in this junior version, that pressure is alleviated by the entertaining spectacles put on by judges Jock Zonfrillo, Melissa Leong (pictured) and Andy Allen. So far, we’ve seen a giant mystery box and a beehive in the garden, but tonight’s display takes the cake.

The remaining contestants enter the kitchen to find a winter wonderland – complete with falling snow. As Andy explains, their chilly challenge is an ice-cream taste test, followed by a pressure test set by legendary dessert chef Darren Purchese.

When reviewing your Will, it is important to consider what happens to your estate if you and your primary beneficiaries all predecease you.

Your Will sets out who receives your estate on your death, but has it covered who receives your estate on your death and the death of your primary beneficiary? So, if you leave everything to your spouse, and he or she dies before you, what happens then?

For example, Lexi and Tom are in a relationship and have three children. In their Wills, they have appointed each other as their executors of each other’s estates on the first to pass away, and they are each the beneficiaries of each other’s estate. On the death of the second, or if they both pass away at the same time, Lexi and Tom have appointed a close friend to be their executor, and their

estate will be distributed to their children on attaining the age of 25 years. If however, Lexi and Tom die together and their three children also die at the same time (and their children do not yet already have children), what happens then in these circumstances, unless the Will makes provision for that possibility, there are no beneficiaries under the Will. A cautious willmaker will include a clause to cover this scenario. We call this a catastrophe clause.

If your Will requires review, it may be wise to consult one of the Estate Planning solicitors at Mullane and Lindsay to review and update your Will, to ensure your estate is distributed the way you want it (and covers all possibilities).

THERE comes a time in many friendships when you wonder whether the level of toxicity being brought into your life is worth it.

I'm trying to think of some of the reasons I've ended friendships over the years.

One was a friend who tried to suffocate me between two beanbags.

One borrowed my car for a few months and returned it in an unrecognisable state.

One employed me for four hours a week, but then burdened me with intimate details of her personal life for at least 15 hours a week.

I worked out I was earning about $3 an hour to be her on-call psychologist.

So, in the scheme of those examples, tea slurping seems pretty minor.

There is a case for tea slurping.

It increases the aroma by making the tea vaporise.

Your friend could actually be a tea connoisseur.

In some cultures, it is also considered polite to slurp tea.

So perhaps your friend is just highly cultured.

Having said that, it is highly irritating.

A bit like those wine connoisseurs who swill their merlot around and then swish it back and forth through the gaps in their teeth like it's mouthwash before spitting it into a spittoon.

Now that is revolting.

Perhaps you could choose a different activity to do together.

Bushwalks or yoga spring to mind.

We all have irritating habits, so maybe she's got a similar issue with one of your vices.

THE ninth annual running of the Burton Automotive King of the Box is set down in stone to run mid next month on 13 and 14 or 21 and 22 November.

The event was postponed from its original September running dates due to health concerns and the restrictions around COVID-19.

There’s been a dream run of waves this year at Box Beach for local and visiting surfers with Winter producing some of the best of it.

It’s hoped that these conditions will continue through November for the competition.

This year’s competition will have one of the strongest fields yet with many WSL surfers competing due to a lack of events on the world tour.

Event Director Teza McKenna is confident that this event will be the best one yet.

“We have incredible support from the local community and the word’s out now that Box Beach is a unique wave that suits highperformance surfing,” said Teza.

“We have some incredible competitors from the world tour as well as the local rippers who’ve really made a name for themselves!”

Due to NSW Health policies the event will be a COVID-Safe event following guidelines set down by both Surfing Australia and Surfing NSW. This year the mental health and suicide prevention group, Another Sunrise, will be staging a giant sand modelling competition with the first prize being a surfboard made by legendary shaper Nev Hyman.

Captain Eric Tolhurst then steadied the ship to push the lead to 7 to 3 with the conversion successful.

In the dying minutes the

Tahs had their opportunities, but Medowie held strong and battled out a well deserved win.

The Waratahs were gracious in defeat and both teams showed exemplary sportsmanship during the post-match ceremony.

It’s believed the celebrations and sore heads will continue for many moons across Port Stephens.

7 to 3, to claim the NHRU Divisional RAMS Home Loans Cup in wet and wild conditions at No.2 Sportsground in

Newcastle.

It’s the first piece of major silverware to land at Boyd Oval since the heyday of

Medowie rugby in the 90’s.

Player-coach Tim Lancaster said the premiership win was the

culmination of a cohesive dedication to ensuring the club and greater Port Stephens had something to celebrate in 2020.

“Our Grand Final win was really built on a solid platform of community support,
