PROBUS Clubs are traditionally for those aged over 55.

Recently four members of the Nelson Bay Ladies Probus Club were presented with their 20 year pins.

For these members to achieve 20 years of membership means that these ladies have been having fun well into their 70’s.

Having four members presented with their 20 year pins made for a great meeting for the ladies club.

At the meeting past-President Margaret Donnellan, Jan Smith, Evelyn Swinburn and Doreen Skinn were presented with their 20 year service pins

by President Mary Coombes.

Jan Smith was also recognised as a life member at the meeting.

This Probus Club is one of the smaller ones in the region which makes it perfect for ladies who may be a bit daunted by attending their first meeting with large numbers present.

and Liberal Candidate for Paterson, Brooke Vitnell, have called on Labor to urgently explain the full effects of their emissions reduction policies on Hunter Valley businesses and workers in critical local industries.

“Labor’s higher emissions targets will hit over 200 of Australia’s largest energy-using and producing businesses with a big new carbon tax and Hunter Valley businesses and workers are in the firing line,” Senator Canavan said.

“A Labor government would change what is known as the emissions Safeguard Mechanism and force these businesses to reduce their emissions by 25 percent by 2030.

“If they can’t, they’ll be forced to buy around 40 million carbon credits to make up the difference – that will mean less money for these businesses to create local jobs and increase wages.

“Labor can't be trusted to protect coal jobs because their record has been anti-coal and they have a plan to put a tax on almost all Australian coal mines.

“Anthony Albanese's claims that he ‘welcomes’ new coal mines just can't be trusted while he plans to put a new tax on coal mining jobs.

“Hunter Valley coal mining and traditional industry businesses, and the more than 9,600 workers and their families who rely on them, will rightly be concerned that Labor is seeking to impose this cost on local industries and workers by stealth,” Mr Thomson said.

“Labor needs to explain the effects of their policies on businesses and on our coal mines that employ thousands of workers from across the electorate of Hunter and our broader region.

Liberal Candidate Brooke Vitnell said the Morrison-Joyce Government has a strong track record of supporting Australia’s coal mining sector.

“Mr Albanese and Labor, who introduced the carbon tax, higher energy prices and job losses can’t be trusted to protect the jobs and livelihoods of those who rely on these industries, including the over 1,000 workers at the Tomago Aluminium Smelter in the electorate of Paterson,” Ms Vitnell said.

“The Liberal/National Government supports our traditional industries, including power generation, mining and manufacturing.

“Unlike Labor, we won’t be reducing emissions at the expense of businesses and jobs in our regions.”

Incumbent Member for Paterson, Meryl Swanson, told News Of The Area, “Labor’s emission reduction policies will create jobs, as well as cut power bills and reduce emissions by boosting renewable energy.

“The move to renewables is underway.

“Only the Nationals Resources Minister seems to be denying that.

“Of course Labor will protect important industries such as coal mining.

“Such protections are written into our Powering Australia policy.

“We will ask the Department of Industry and the Clean Industry Regulator to determine revised baselines for each facility in consultation with industry.

“We will consider available and emerging technologies, and importantly, we will provide tailored treatment for emissions-intensive, tradeexposed industries.

“This will be based on the principle of comparative impact ensuring that exporters remain competitive.

“Our policy supports coal mining and coal miners.

“Between 80 percent and 90 percent of our coal is sold overseas, so the future of coal mines in the Hunter will be determined by the boards of those companies, in Japan, South Korea, India and China.

“To ask our coal mines to reduce emissions when there is no requirement for international competitors to do so would be counterproductive and unfair.

“It could lead to jobs being sent overseas without any emissions reduction, and Labor would not do that.

“Aluminium is another emissionsintensive, trade-exposed industry.

“Under Labor’s policy, Tomago Aluminium would only need to match the reductions of international competitors.”

Swanson went on to say that most of these companies have committed to more ambitious targets than the Coalition.

“It is the Liberals and Nationals who are out of step with business and community expectations, and they are the ones scaremongering,” she said.

Greens call for greater protection for Aged Care residents THE Greens announced their ‘Aged Care for All’ policy in Bulahdelah last week, which they say would see an additional $6 billion a year invested in aged care, to provide high quality, safe and timely care to meet the needs of all older Australians.

Speaking in Bulahdelah, David Shoebridge, Senate candidate for the Greens in NSW, described the policy as “an essential national reform”.

“The Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety found the level of neglect and abuse in aged care is unacceptably high, the system has reached crisis point, and there has been a vacuum in leadership,” said Mr Shoebridge.

Louise Ihlein, Greens candidate for Paterson, commented on the distressing number of smaller aged care facilities being forced to close their doors due to inadequate funding.

“People should be able to age with dignity in

their local communities,” she said.

“Aged care is an essential social service that should be provided based on need, not a commodity that can be outsourced and bought or sold at the lowest price.

“Older Australians deserve better.

“This policy sits alongside our commitment to extend Medicare to cover Dental Care and Mental Health.

“Both policies can be funded by a wealth tax on billionaires, and ensuring large corporations pay a fair share of tax,” she added.

Mr Shoebridge said, “With the Greens in the balance of power in the Senate we can force the next government to support smaller not-for-profit providers and keep local residential facilities open.”

Meet The Candidates: Brooke Vitnell

By Tara CAMPBELL THE Federal Election is just under a month away and News Of The Area is introducing you to the candidates for the election.

Brooke Vitnell is a Port Stephens local and is the Liberal candidate for Paterson.

After growing up in Port Stephens and attending the local schools, Brooke completed a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Communication and is a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales.

“I am putting my hand up to fight for our community because I want to make it the best place to live, raise a family or run a small business,” Ms Vitnell said.

“I have previously worked for a number of Federal Cabinet Ministers as a senior adviser and during my time working for the Government I played a key role in preparation and communication of the National Plan to Reduce Violence Against Women and their Children and managing

communications surrounding establishment of the Disability Royal Commission.”

Ms Vitnell says that she wants to ensure that the community has its fair share of work opportunities, and is advocating for greater opportunities in the Port Stephens region.

“With a strong record in community advocacy, including fighting to deliver better outcomes in youth mental health and the prevention of elder and domestic abuse.

“I know how to speak up locally but deliver nationally.

“Like many of us I'm the product of a family that's spent generations working and raising families across the Hunter.

“Whether it was rolling BHP steel or fighting for their country they instilled in me a deep commitment to hard work and dedication to community,” Ms Vitnell said.

Her main priorities for the election include communications (mobile blackspot safety concerns), a stronger and safer Australia through support for defence projects, support for small businesses, better health outcomes, safer streets and support for koalas.

“The people of our region are my

inspiration; they drive my passion to deliver for our community, so we can make our town and suburbs better places to live and raise families and for jobs.

“It's my pledge to put the people of our region first, both here and in Canberra.

“I’m a proud volunteer in our community and want to give back to the region that has given me and my family so much.

“I want to use my skills to get things done in Paterson,” Ms Vitnell said.

ANZAC Day 2022 In The Bay AFTER two years of restrictions imposed on ANZAC Day, the community of Port Stephens came out in force on Monday to share in the commemorations.

Every year ANZAC Day offers an opportunity to reflect and to honour those that have paid the ultimate price.

2022 marks 80 years since World War II hit our shores with the bombing of Darwin.

However ANZAC Day is no longer just about the veterans from World War I and World War II. Veterans from Korea, Vietnam, and Afghanistan service are now front and centre.

In Nelson Bay ANZAC Day was commemorated with a strong attendance at the Dawn Service in APEX Park.

Community groups, including the Rotary Club of Salamander Bay, laid wreaths recognising the sacrifice our service men and women make to keep us safe.

On Anzac Day, at memorials and ceremonies across the country, and around the world, we remember those who served our nation when they were called to do so.

We honour the courage, endurance, mateship and sacrifice of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) that lives

on today.

The Chief of the Defence Force, General Angus Campbell, attending the Anzac Day service at the Delhi War Cemetery in India said, “Today, we acknowledge the courage and sacrifice of our current and former servicemen and women who have served and died in all conflicts, and our allies and partners who have served alongside them.

“The service and sacrifice displayed by the ANZAC’s at Gallipoli laid the foundations of the modern Australian Defence Force and shaped our national character.

“The freedom we have known does not come without a price.

“From the periled landing on the Gallipoli peninsula 107 years ago, to our more recent operations in the Middle East, we pause alongside all Australians to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

“The ADF has a long history of protecting Australia and its interests from those who may do us harm.

Emergency Services Update

Hazard Reduction Burning Throughout the week, Fire and Rescue NSW in partnership with Port Stephens Council took advantage of favourable weather conditions to conduct hazard reduction burning at Anzac Park in Shoal Bay. Chimney Checks NSW Rural Fire Service wishes to remind all residents to check the state of chimneys.

Incomplete combustion creates creosote in the chimney, which, if left to accumulate, can block the chimney, and ignite.

Remember to have your chimney checked and cleaned regularly.

Salt Ash Crash The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was tasked by NSW Ambulance at 4:40am on the morning of 19 April as a response to a serious single vehicle motor vehicle accident in Salt Ash. The vehicle travelled through a ditch before becoming airborne when it hit the drainage.

The vehicle at the time had unauthorised number plates affixed and was unregistered and uninsured and the male driver was disqualified and was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

The driver was trapped in the wreckage and nearby residents and a passer-by removed him from the vehicle

and administered first aid.

NSW Ambulance Paramedics arrived on scene and carried out initial treatment on the 21-yearold male driver before the arrival of the helicopter and Helicopter Critical Care Medical Team.

The young man was released from the vehicle suffering serious spinal injuries and was further stabilised prior to being airlifted directly to Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney in a serious condition for further specialist medical treatment.

SES Training Rescue Operators from NSW SES Port Stephens undertook a skills exercise involving a scenario with a bus and a mannequin as part of q

their training this week.

As part of the scenario, crews worked together to stabilise the bus and lift in up to extricate the entrapped from underneath.

Crews worked to free the casualty by using cribbing blocks to stabilise the bus to avoid any further pressure on the casualty and using high pressure airbags to perform a controlled lift the front of the bus, whilst at the same time supporting the suspended load using timber cribbing blocks.

This training provided a refresher on valuable skills including casualty care, trauma management, heavy vehicle stabilisation, identification of lifting points, use of dual airbags, lifting

Police Farewell On 22 April, Port Stephens Hunter Police District joined together to wish Senior Constable Hannah Wynne of the NSW Police Force (NSWPF) a goodbye.

Hannah joined the NSWPF in 2009.

She has been stationed at Northern Beaches, Prosecutions Command and has worked in the Port Stephens Hunter Police District since 2013.

Hannah is a dedicated officer who is popular with her colleagues and a great role model for junior police and gave tremendous service for over thirteen years.

Rental costs by to rise by “ten to twenty percent”

WITH immigration into Australia being rebooted and gathering pace, some regions are seeing a new wave of demand for rental properties, according to Pete Wargent, the co-founder of Australia’s first national network for buyer’s agents, BuyersBuyers.

Mr Wargent said, “The Budget papers mapped up a return to net overseas migration of 180,000 for 20223, and 213,000 for financial year 2023-4, representing a strong rebound after two years of restrictions and border closures.”

Port Stephens is already experiencing a shortage in rental stocks, and Mr Wargent said the next few years could be characterised by a chronic shortage of rental stock in some areas.

Mr Wargent said, “We’re already seeing extremely tight rental markets in some cities, after years of restrictions on investor and interestonly lending, while foreign landlords have also largely been shut out of the market.

“Rents will probably rise by ten to twenty percent in many parts of the country this year, given the intense competition in evidence for quality rental stock,” Mr Wargent said.

BuyersBuyers CEO Doron Peleg said a potential change

of government would do little to impact the outlook for immigration.

Mr Peleg said, “Australia has over 400,000 job vacancies and needs to refresh the supply of skilled workers urgently, so even assuming a change in government we expect population growth to be strong over the next few years, with the total headcount likely to increase by around one million over the course of three years.

“The leader of the opposition has already hinted at the potential for permanent residency for some foreign workers under a Labor Government, which could grow the population significantly, suggesting that both sides of politics will adopt similarly pro-immigration policies in this election year.

“There will be some issues pulling in the opposite direction, such as Australia’s high cost of living.

“But generally Australia is seen to be a clean, safe, and popular destination, and the immigration programme should be comfortably filled given the strengthening labour market and falling unemployment rate,” Mr Peleg said.

opportunity to overhaul our migration system and reduce reliance on temporary workers to fill skills shortages.

“The economic model that relies on a stream of lowpaid workers is not good for those workers, not good for the economy and not good for Australians.

“We’ll have more to say about migration policy during the election campaign.

“Short-term visas have a role to play but have been too often used by businesses to avoid paying local workers

“We want a system that favours permanent over temporary visas, that has more paths to permanency, that allows people to come here, settle, start businesses, build communities, and raise families.

“Labor has policies to help more people in the regions buy their first home and to build 30,000 social and affordable housing properties.

housing stress.”

KARUAH, like many towns bypassed by expressways, seems to be taking on something of a rebirth as a cultural stopover and writers are putting it well and truly on the map.

The latest publication to come out of the village is 'The Story of the Karuah Fire Brigade' by Paul Mulvaney from the Karuah Local History Group.

The Karuah and District RSL and 'Karuah Working Together' financed the Project.

If a picture speaks a thousand words, then this book is well up there in tracing the development of a grassroots bushfire brigade from its inception to a well oiled professional service.

It is liberally illustrated with numerous colour palettes and is meticulously researched.

Extracts from brigade meetings are livened up by comical comments from members at fire scenes.

The Brigade’s interaction with the community is highlighted and their battle with the great Lone Pine bushfire of 2016 is graphically documented.

Stockton a priority in City of Newcastle Budget

THE City of Newcastle has announced its 2022-23 Budget, with Stockton set to be supported through the next financial year.

The $424 million budget is the largest in its history and forecasts a modest surplus of $1.2 million, and is a return to the black following a $40 million hit to the Council’s income over the past two years from lockdowns and COVID-19 restrictions that forced the closure of many of its facilities including City Hall, the Civic Theatre and its fleet of parking meters.

Stockton will see $1.3 million to continue implementing actions from the Stockton Coastal Management Plan, alongside a number of other projects funded under several other streams.

Works funded will include South Mitchell Street Seawall and Dalby Oval (buried protection

structures), Stockton Beach sand nourishment, Punt Road public toilet demolition, a new toilet at Stockton South Boat Ramp, work on the Astra Street Endangered Ecological Community Action Plan, revegetation on Hunter River Foreshore, a breakwater protection structure on King Street, repair zone three of Mitchell Street seawall, Stockton Coast coastal emergency works and laneways, infiltration and relieved sags in Stockton.

These will be funded under the following: $17.8 million for cultural and recreational facilities including libraries, parks, aquatic centres and civic venues, with $8.3 million for environmental sustainability projects and $1.5 million for street and park trees to address urban heat island impacts. $5.9 million on stormwater upgrades to address flooding to property and businesses.

$2.1 million for community infrastructure and amenities including public toilets, community buildings and caravan parks.

THE NSW Land and Environment Court has ordered a Lane Cove company to pay more than $250,000 in fines following offences that damaged natural areas near Tea Gardens.

The Lane Cove Company, Bao Lin Pty Ltd (Bao Lin), was formerly owned by husband and-wife pair Phillip Dong Fang Lee and Xiao Bei Shi until Mr Lee ceased direction in 2018, when Ms Shi took the role of director at the company.

On 12 April, Bao Lin pled guilty to four offences against the Water Management Act 2000 - the unauthorised clearing of vegetation, construction of dams, and associated activities on waterfront land on privately owned property near Tea Gardens.

The offences impacted Station Creek and some of its tributaries joining Bundabah Creek, which is part of the North Arm Cove Sanctuary Zone of the Great Lakes Marine Park and occurred from acquisition of the premises in 2015 until 2020.

there were three main regulators who investigated activities undertaken at the premises, being the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) – Water, DPI – Fisheries, and Water NSW. The prosecutor, the Natural Resources Access Regulator (NRAR), became involved in the investigation in 2018.

Justice Robson determined that the company was in full control of all the causes which gave rise to the offences.

“Bao Lin undertook the controlled activities involving the removal of vegetation along four watercourses, without a controlled activity approval, and constructed a dam in a number of creek beds, which included the removal of vegetation in the beds and on the banks of those watercourses.

“In each circumstance, Bao Lin had control over the causes that gave rise to the offences and by the commission of the offences caused harm to the environment,” Justice Robson said Justice Robson also deemed that the offences were in the range of “moderate seriousness”.

For the removal of vegetation and endangered ecological communities, the company was fined $64,600.

For clearing vegetation and depositing material within 40 metres of a water course, it was fined another $57,000.

Justice Robson fined the company a further $64,600 for constructing an unauthorised dam on a watercourse.

Port’s Friendship Group Hit The Road

PORT Stephens Friendship Group members have just completed another successful annual trip, this time to the coast and country of NSW. The trip started in excellent weather, with stops at Bald Hill at Stanwell Tops, Austinmer and Wollongong, with the group staying at Kiama on night one.

The Friendship Group’s President, Keith Hobbs, told News Of The Area, “Port Stephens Coaches provided us with a special event during the afternoon as we visited HARS

(Aviation Museum) at Albion Park.

“HARS reconstruct aircraft for flying purposes and we were lucky to see a replica of the Southern Cross aircraft as well as climbing onboard planes.”

During the next three days; the group stayed at Batemans Bay where they visited Mogo Wildlife Park, viewed the location where the granite stones were excavated for the Sydney Harbour Bridge during 1928 to 1932, enjoyed an excellent trip to the Bodalla cheese factory, and a cruise up the river Clyde.

As the group left Batemans Bay, they travelled the Kings Highway and after suffering exceptional rain, they climbed into fine weather, passing through Boorowa for a great morning stop and then onto Canberra for a quick tour and a visit to Cockington Green to review the fabulous creations, before travelling to Cowra.

“During our visit to Cowra, we visited the beautiful Japanese gardens as well as the old POW camp and other historical locations all in fabulous weather.”

The Group then visited Portland to review some exceptional murals and had the last night of their journey in Lithgow.

“It was great fun for us all to share prior to travelling home.

“What a great holiday and all catered for, mixing with 26 of us friendship folks, seeing the coast and having cruises, visiting the country to see the old village buildings and the green countryside, great visits, food and accommodation and on completion everyone wants to do next year’s trip,” Keith said.

Medowie couple wins big on Keno

A MEDOWIE couple received a nice Easter surprise last Saturday after picking up over $98,000 on a Keno ticket they purchased at Souths Merewether.

The triumphant couple said they had previously thought about changing the numbers they used on their Keno entries, but thankfully had decided to stick with the ones they knew and

now loved.

“The win was an incredible Easter surprise and we’re just speechless,” the couple told Keno.

“We play a little bit but have never won anything substantial, so this just goes to show you have to be in it to win it, and we just happened to be at the right place at the right time,” they said.

“After thinking about changing our numbers, it was incredible to see that the ones we stuck with pop up on the screen.

“We just can’t wait to celebrate and share it with our family,” they said.

The couple are currently looking to buy a new home and said that the win will allow them some flexibility and freedom while they’re

searching.

In 2021, Keno players across the eastern states of Australia celebrated more than 36.2 million wins totalling over $590.3 million.

The couple joined a number of winners across Port Stephens this month, including a $650,000 win for a Raymond Terrace man earlier in the month and $25,000 for a resident from Soldiers Point this week.

On the afternoon of Friday 22 April, an official from Keno reached out to the winner to break the exciting news.

“What a nice surprise for a Friday.

“I’m stunned, this is awesome,” the player said.

The winner told Keno officials that he loves playing the game and always has his fingers crossed for a big win.

“This win comes at an excellent time for me.

“It’s been a couple of trying years- being diagnosed with cancer and losing my mum shortly after.

“So, this win is great news and has left me feeling

fantastic,” he said.

The team at Soldiers Point Bowling Club said they are thrilled for their winner and wish him all the best with his prize.

The winning ticket was part of a promotion which ran from Sunday 13 March to Saturday 16 April 2022, with winners notified by Keno officials.

“This is going to be an enormous help as I’ll put it towards my business,” the winner said.

“Earlier this week, I bought a few hundred dollars’ worth of chocolates and delivered them to our local nursing homes and community hospital, so this feels like good karma.

“It’s just awesome and I could cry right now - this means so much,” he said.

Healthy Children a Blessing By a PORT STEPHENS MOTHER WHILE I watched the Prime Minister declare that he was blessed to have two healthy children I could not help but agree.

Having a healthy family is a privilege and one that should be recognised as something to celebrate.

In Australia many children of a variety of abilities are able to live good and productive lives, yet some will never walk, kick a football, become independent, climb a mountain or even go to school.

While some took aim at the Prime Minister for recognising that his family was not facing the many and difficult challenges that families with children with disabilities do - I was personally horrified.

Who would actually wish for their child to suffer a disease like cancer?

I know that Dylan Alcott has managed to excel despite his circumstances - but this is not true for many individuals.

Some families of children with disabilities suffer stress, and mental illness due to the difficulties that they face on their journeys.

When women are pregnant they are often asked “What do you want?”.

For me the answer was a healthy and happy child.

I know that I would have given anything to have had that healthy and happy child that I wished for when I was pregnant, yet it was not to be.

I had a child that spent years as a frequent flyer in hospital.

One that we put through countless traumatic procedures, and yes we are the lucky ones - that child is alive.

And yes that child is now grown up and has a good life.

OPINION

Yet, I and my family would have been truly blessed had we never endured this journey.

The endless nights in hospital with the incessant machines that beep.

The stress of waiting for test results, only to find that your child needs one more scan, one more needle, an addition to the medication regime, another operation…

To hear the Prime Minister criticised for saying that his family is blessed for not enduring this type of life to me is abhorrent.

No one would want to walk a mile in my family’s shoes.

No one should be happy to have to say goodbye to their child as they enter the operating theatre over and over again.

No one would choose to live with a lifetime of health issues and concerns that can impact quality of life at the drop of the hat.

While my child doesn’t have an obvious disability no one would wish for a child that will have to live with a visible disability if they could choose to have a child that did not have to be different.

We all know children can be cruel differences give bullies opportunities - yet another hurdle to overcome.

For many of the children that are frequent flyers in the health system there are excellent outcomes but this is not true for all.

To me it is an undeniable blessing to have a healthy child.

I wouldn’t wish the journey my child faced on anyone - yet it does make the highs higher and the celebrations richer - simply because he made it.

Dear Gerard, I am now intrigued as to which party you are referring to.

Is it a party whose current leader is conducting his political ambitions via Zoom with his dog Toto?

Is it the party whose leader may know the (dubiously defined) unemployment rate, but should stop misusing the word 'blessed'?

Is it the party whose leader knows a thing or two about battered hake, and throws around the phrase 'left wing virtue signalling' quicker than you could order a side of chips?

Is it the party whose leader makes obscure Twitter references to celebrating marijuana consumption while eating kebabs?

Or is it a new independent party, with a budget that only allows for a few strategically placed billboards in remote areas?

Regardless, I have a question for you about this common area allegedly displaying an offensive political sign.

Do you assist your neighbour to maintain this common area?

Do you have a roster of who gets to trim the grass around the letter boxes and water meter?

Or do you leave this role entirely to your neighbour, in fact showing little interest unless it is to collect your mail or position your bin?

If it is the latter, I think it would be impolite to start throwing around your opinions in relation to any improvements or distractions, political or otherwise.

If, much like our political parties, you only show an interest when it directly affects your current needs, I think you should just keep quiet, and perhaps reflect on the requirement for ongoing attention and maintenance.

“Labor will invest in skills training by providing access to Fee Free TAFE to

465,000 Australians studying in industries with a skills shortage, including 45,000 new places.

“Labor will deliver 20,000 extra university places over 2022 and 2023, prioritising courses in national priority areas such as clean energy, advanced manufacturing, health, education and other identified areas of skill shortage,” Ms Swanson said.

She stated that Labor will also ensure that one in ten workers on major government projects are apprentices, trainees or cadets.

ONE of Port Stephens’ most adventurous women has written a memoir of her time as a hot air balloonist.

Corlette resident Ruth Wilson began her 47-year flying career in 1975 with her first balloon flight in New Zealand.

She won the inaugural Australian Ballooning q Australian Ballooning Championship winner Ruth Wilson has Championship in 1979 penned a memoir of her adventures hot air ballooning across the globe. then represented Australia

in a further five world championships and other international competitions.

Ruth was recently presented with the prestigious Swiss Federation Aéronautique Internationale Paul Tissandier Diploma for serving the cause of aviation by Ms Pip Spence, CEO/Director, Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), at an aviation forum in Sydney.

Her memoir ‘Conquering Clouds’ was launched in March

attracting positive reviews.

Libby Harkness, the ghost writer of the bestselling memoir Turia Pitt’s ‘Everything to Live For’, recently wrote that ‘Conquering Clouds’ is an “unputdownable memoir of a remarkable woman”.

This book has it all – from impoverished childhood, deathdefying adventures, failed romances and international fame as a balloonist, Ruth proves she conquered far more than clouds.

Ruth told News Of The Area, “I have spent my life as a traveller with homes in USA, Japan, New Zealand, Canada and throughout Australia – Byron Bay, Canberra, Sydney, Brisbane and now I am living in Corlette.”

Tomaree Library will host a launch of the book with a talk

by Ruth on Monday 2 May from 3.30pm to 5.30pm.

At the launch Ruth will talk about the various clouds she has conquered throughout her life that led her to write her story.

“I have written Conquering Clouds to help me find my biological father, to inspire others not to be swayed by age when deciding to embrace challenges, to share my brother Ron’s story, a Vietnam vet, and as a legacy for my grandchildren,” Ruth said.
