Final Tomaree Lodge Residents Moved to NDIS Group Homes

By Marian SAMPSON AFTER many years and a great deal of heartache for many the last resident from Tomaree Lodge has been relocated.

More than 600 people were living in more than 20 large institution-style centres across NSW a decade ago – the largest of which were in Stockton, Kanangra and Tomaree.

A Department of Communities and Justice spokesperson told News Of The Area, “The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is enabling people with disability to live in fit-for-purpose homes in the community, where they can live happy and healthy lives, and exercise choice and

Vale Vera Deacon OAM passes away

HISTORIAN Vera Deacon has passed away peacefully at the age of 94.

Vera was a beloved Stockton resident who gave back to the local community in many ways.

Throughout her life she was involved in a variety of social and political movements; she has written works of local history and fiction, and she was a supporter, volunteer and benefactor to a range of organisations from the Hunter Wetlands Centre to Aboriginal Scholarships at the University of Newcastle.

Her family wrote, “Passionate about Newcastle’s history and a committed social and environmental activist in both Sydney and Newcastle, her passing leaves a huge hole in the heart of her family and the wider community.”

Ms Deacon was an Order of Australia recipient and Freeman

of the City of Newcastle and spent many years recording and conserving the local history of the area.

Ms Deacon provided many generous donations to the University of Newcastle’s Cultural Collections for over twenty years.

The Vera Deacon Regional History Fund was set up by the university and named in her honour to recognise her ongoing support and generosity, ensuring that current and future generations of Newcastle will be able to access the records and accounts of those who have come before them.

One of Vera’s friends said about Vera, “She always said ‘we stand on the shoulders of others’ when referring to our pioneer ancestors and all Novocastrian feminists- but she especially revered those working-class heroines of Newcastle and the Hunter Valley; particularly the Lysaght’s Girls on the Owen Gun assembly line in World War Two.

Climate Activists Slam Gas Plant at Tomago Protest

a bid to change government policy around a gas fuelled recovery for Australia.

CAPS President Alisha Onslow said, “The federal government’s announcement this week that they plan to spend more than $600 million of taxpayers money on a new gas power station at Kurri Kurri beggars belief.

“This is a gift to the government’s political mates and party donors in the gas industry.

“We do not need this power station.

“It is a reckless waste of public money that will push up power prices, damage farmland and worsen climate change.”

While Onslow did not hold back in the opposition to the gas power station scheduled for Kurri Kurri she was more positive about the manufacturing of batteries at Tomago.

“Here at Tomago, a giant battery factory will soon be built, supporting the transition to a zero carbon, renewables

powered future which nearly everyone knows is inevitable and essential,” she said.

She believes that the federal government is stubbornly resisting the advice of experts and the business and financial community by artificially propping up the fossil fuel industries, who remain major donors to the major political parties.

MEMBER for Port Stephens Kate Washington has launched a scathing attack on the NSW Liberal Government over the future use of public land not only in Port Stephens but across the state.

Ms Washington told News Of The Area, “The Government’s full-time PR spokesperson, Taylor Martin MLC, has accused me of peddling a scare campaign about the Government Property Index.

“He ridiculously claimed the website is simply for increased transparency and to allow community groups to identify unused government property.”

Washington went on to claim that the statements are “just rubbish”.

will encourage investment proposals through the establishment of a new public proposals process.

“We are always looking at how we can best leverage government-owned land and property to deliver better economic, social, environmental and cultural outcomes for the people of NSW. “Better use of our data will lead to better decision-making and, ultimately, better housing outcomes for the people of NSW.” The purpose of the list has been explained to News Of The Area as a tool that will allow the public, Councils, NGOs and developers to search for government owned land and put forward innovative proposals to put the land to better use.

Minister for Energy and Emissions Reduction Angus Taylor said the Government had given the private sector every opportunity and is fulfilling its promise to deliver the cheap, reliable power that NSW households, businesses and industries needed to prosper and grow.

“Cheap power is crucial to ensuring families, businesses and job-creating industries in NSW can thrive, which is why we are committed to replacing

the energy generated by Liddell to keep prices down,” Minister Taylor said.

“This important project is good news for NSW as well as the broader National Electricity Market.

“We were very clear from the start – we will not stand by and watch prices go up and the lights go off.

“This project will deliver flexible gas generation to replace Liddell and maintain reliable power alongside Australia’s world-leading investment in renewables,” he said.

However with clean and green energy a priority for environmental groups and future generations there is opposition to gas and coal fuelled power.

Dr Madeline Taylor, an expert in energy and natural resources law at the University of Sydney also warns that the funding for Kurri Kurri creates a policy signal that could now reinvigorate the dormant petroleum exploration licences in NSW, which could see gas development of prime agricultural land in the Hunter region to supply more gas.

When Covid-19 restrictions cancelled the Friendship Groups tour to Coonabarabran and beyond last year, the thirty keen travellers setting off in late April/May were certainly full of excitement to finally be on their way.

told News Of The Area, “On the first day we lunched at Nundle calling into the First Fleet Park at Wallabadah; a park kept in exceptional condition.

“In Nundle we viewed an old woollen mill with an informative talk about the machinery involved while in action.

“This mill is one of the last of its kind of spinning mills to still be in operation.”

The group then stopped overnight at Tamworth where they enjoyed a morning tour of the town and Power Museum.

Leaving Tamworth, they made their way to Gunnedah, the area where Dorothy McKellar penned the famous poem I Love A Sunburnt Country.

On their arrival at Coonabarabran, the group spent their first night stargazing with an informative presentation by Astronomer Donna and her assistant, where a large telescope was set up.

“The highlight of our tour was spending a day out in the Warrumbungle Mountains.

“Some went for a bush walk to view the “Bread Knife” lookout and others were taken for a very informative talk of the whole area by a park assistant.

“Regrouping we headed further up into the mountains to the “Siding Springs” Observatory on Mount Woorut where we were taken on a tour of the large Telescope Centre.

“This tour will be long remembered by all as we were taken inside the dome up to the floor where the telescope is mounted, our guide explaining the full operations of the scene in front and above us.”

This was followed by an exterior platform walk around the whole dome which is very high above the ground.

“We visited many other places of interest including “The Black Gate” Distillery where a husband and wife team started their own business brewing single malt whisky and dark rum.”

After a tour of Gilgandra and visiting the Rural Museum the group continued onto Dubbo where we toured the Dubbo Zoo and the new Flying Doctor Base.

“We finished a very enjoyable time travelling together and were well looked after by our member organiser Rita Harvey and Neil our (Coach Captain) Driver,” she said.

The Port Stephens Friendship Group meets the last Tuesday of each month at 5.00pm in the Nelson Room, Nelson Bay Bowling Club followed by dinner together in the restaurant at 6.00pm.

Government Funds Youth Mental Health Service COPSY

YOUTH Mental Health services in Port Stephens received a boost in funding this week when Taylor Martin MLC presented COPSY Inc which operates the free jupiter youth counselling services in the region with $94,500 to continue their work.

Sadly the service is seeing an increase in referrals for young people who require counselling.

The team at COPSY is led

by President Brooke Vitnell who has been working hard to ensure that the Minister understands the needs of youth in the region.

Importantly the funding is not tied to any particular activity, which will allow COPSY to be nimble and address the needs of youth through the provision of additional counselling services.

to address the increased workload from the COVID pandemic, to address the pressure on young people at

this time.”

Time To Get Your Flu Shot

WITH COVID-19 and vaccination against the virus that has seen Australian borders slammed shut there are fears around lower than usual rates of vaccination against the flu.

Flu vaccination rates are significantly lower than last year - fewer than one in two Australians working with patients have had their flu vaccine in 2021 – compared with almost more than double that number this time last year (47.6% vs 88.6%) The current health advice from the Australian Government is that it recommends flu vaccination for everyone aged 6 months and older.

away, we are being reminded that now is the time for Australians who haven’t had their flu vaccine in 2021 to speak to their health care professional.

Only 45% of Australians 18-64 have had their flu vaccine – compared with 71.8% at the same time last year.

66% of Australians 65 and older have had their flu vaccine – compared with almost 90% at the same time last year.

Professor Terry Nolan, public health physician at the Doherty Institute, says getting the flu vaccine remains as important as ever in 2021, given the unpredictability of flu in each year.

The impacts of flu should not be underestimated, we were recently reminded of this by Virgin CEO Jayne Hrdlicka who when speaking at a business lunch said, “Some people may die, but it will be way smaller than with the flu.

“We’re forgetting the fact that we’ve learnt how to live with lots of viruses and challenges over the years, and we’ve got to learn how to live with this,” she said.

2019 was one of the worst flu seasons on record with almost 300,000 notifications of laboratoryconfirmed influenza to the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (NNDSS) and more than 800 flu-related

deaths reported.

Dr Jonathan Anderson, Seqirus Head of Medical Affairs Asia Pacific, said the peak flu season in Australia usually occurs between July and September and there is still time to act to ensure that flu numbers stay as low as possible.

“Achieving high flu vaccination coverage is a key population health strategy for helping to reduce pressure on our hospitals and health care system,” said Dr Anderson.

“Flu vaccination remains as important as ever - while high-rates of vaccination and social distancing had driven down influenza rates last season, we can’t be complacent about the potential impacts of flu.”

Calls For Master Plan For Tomaree Headland Site THE site on Tomaree Headland is a state heritage listed site, adjacent to a National Park which offers spectacular scenic vistas.

Tomaree Lodge is one of the few known surviving examples of a purpose built WWII Army Camp in the State of NSW. “Tomaree Headland Historical Group (THHG) has developed a creative vision for the future of the Headland, which identifies the Lodge site together with the spectacular adjoining Tomaree National Park as having the potential to become a nationally significant visitor attraction.

“There is already a

“The adaptive re-use of the Hungry Point Reserve in Cronulla, previously a State Government Fisheries base, is a worthy model for consideration.

“The Liberal Government matched my pledge and promised to keep the land for community use and open space.

“It was a great win for the community all round.

Number One Tourist Destination

PORT Stephens has been crowned number one tourist destination in New South Wales and second in all of Australia.

According to Wotif, Port Stephens has seen an increase of 895 per cent in interest over the past six months, compared to prepandemic levels.

The list put Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula in the top spot nationally, followed by Port Stephens.

The Murray in Victoria was next with an 800 per cent increase.

Port Stephens found itself in the company of regions including Albury, Kangaroo Island and The Barossa Valley.

This increase in

interest is primarily due to Australian domestic travel, prompted by campaigns including ‘Holiday Here This Year’.

Andrew Hutchinson, General Manager for Tourism Australia spoke about the ‘Holiday Here This Year’ campaign; which is all about getting Australians to travel domestically and explore places they usually wouldn’t.

“Our job is to drive domestic travel to not just recover, but thrive,” Mr Hutchinson said.

“In 2019, Australians took nearly ten million overseas trips with an average spend of $6520 per trip.

“When Australians travel at home however, the average spend of a domestic

trip is far less, at about $690 per trip,” he said.

TWICE a year volunteers gather at Nelson Bay don gloves, grab garbage bags and scour the break walls for rubbish that would otherwise end up in the Bay. Still more volunteers pull on their wetsuits, and fill up their air tanks and dive into the marina precinct bringing all sorts of waste to the surface.

In May this team of Sea Shelter volunteers and helpers met at the D’Albora Marina in Nelson Bay to tackle the rubbish that has built up in the area both above ground and below the water.

Lia Pereira of Sea Shelter told News Of The Area, “Together they collected 2443 individual pieces of rubbish and over 9km of fishing line!”

“I’m sure there’ll be a number of wonderful and exciting ideas for the site, but the most important thing is community consultation,” she said.

Taylor Martin MLC for the Hunter told News Of The Area, “The future of the site will start with opening up with pubic consultation, there will be a Master Plan process and everyone will get to have their say; and I know that will lead to some misinformation but it is the right thing to do; to let everybody in the community have their say, and I look forward to hearing a whole range of ideas.

“It’s a very big site and there’s a lot of history and sentiment attached and there are many different uses at the moment so we have to find the right way forward,” he said.

The Sea Shelter team hope to use this experience to remind fisher men and women to take their rubbish with them when they finish, and to remind everyone, both locals and visitors to keep our marina clean.

“It’s now a fact that our oceans are filled with more plastic than marine animals, and Australians have found to be the world’s biggest consumers of single-use plastic so it’s more important than ever to dispose of waste responsibly.”

While Plastic Free Port Stephens have plans in place to install a Seabin within the Nelson Bay marina precinct nothing will work as well as everyone working to dispose of their rubbish responsibly.

Dog Patrol

IN what looks like a response to community feedback to date Council has launched yet another survey into dog use of beaches in and around the Anna Bay area.

There was keen interest in maintaining the status quo for our four legged friends in the neighbourhoods of Anna Bay and Boat Harbour with residents choosing to allow pooches access to beaches.

Senior Community Recreation Planning Officer Paul Burton said, “Our last review was back in 2014 and we know a lot has

changed since then — dogs are a valued member of the family, communities have changed, recreational spaces have been upgraded and how people use these shared spaces is different,” he said.

“Listening to our community and finding balance for everyone who uses public spaces was really key this time around.”

In November 2020, Port Stephens Council held two community drop-in sessions and ran an online survey.

“We had a great response to our engagement late last year,” Paul Burton said.

As well as community engagement, the dog exercise areas review took into account benchmarking with other councils and a site analysis to identify opportunities for improvement.

Central Ward Councillor Sarah Smith said this review came off the back of a request from locals.

“Everyone loves walking on our beautiful beaches — especially in peak periods.

“We’ve worked really closely with residents on this review and it’s important we get the balance right for everyone in our shared spaces.

“I think this review reflects that happy medium,” Cr Smith said.

Proposed changes from this review include allowing dogs off lead at Birubi Beach before 9am and after 5pm during the peak period of October to April.

Dogs will also be allowed off lead at all times during the off-peak period of May to September.

At Boat Harbour beach, dogs will be allowed on-lead to walk along the beach to access the headlands before 9am and after 5pm.

This change will provide a new route to access the off lead area located on the South Headland and also for those that like to walk their dog on lead.

Exercise areas at Boat Harbour and Fishermans Bay Park have also been changed to better reflect the areas suitable for off lead use.

Paws members I would like to understand why the loss of significant off-leash area at Boat Harbour Headland is being proposed?

“This is being seen as a significant change and never communicated during community consultation.

“Is this linked to the future Tomaree Headland walk?

“If so it's completely understandable and the community would understand the change.

“Could you please give me a little more information to share with our strong 300 members.

“Apart from the above the review is being seen very favorably,” she said.

PBL Back in Action

THE extremely successful Positive Behaviour and Learning (PBL) awards have returned to MarketPlace Raymond Terrace.

The awards recognise acts of kindness, citizenship and dedication.

Each week one student from each of the 9 participating PBL schools will be awarded for their work within their school or the community.

The PBL Awards are something every student has the chance to strive for and many that have received the award stand proud and honoured to receive commendation for their achievements.

Many will probably watch tonight’s two-round cookoff fascinated by the ingredients. But would you use them in their own kitchen? Are you “game”? Full-blown foodies are in for a treat, but can we expect an even more challenging episode dedicated to something such as offal soon? Probably not. Chicken intestines just aren’t that charming, but there’s a sense of adventure in cooking game meat. Tonight, the contestants have five minutes to identify 14 displayed game meats. The lowest scorers will have to concoct something delicious and impress judges Mel, Jock (above centre) and Andy (above right) in order to stay. It’s not exactly lick-yourlips television, but is kind of educational.

From the deft hands of writer and producer Jed Mercurio (Line of Duty, Bodyguard) comes this scenically beautiful and emotional dark whodunnit. If you watched the premiere episode last week, you could be forgiven for thinking that Bloodlands has a bythe-numbers police procedural feel to it, albeit a top-quality one at that. But as episode two unfolds tonight it soon becomes clear that not only is its lead, James Nesbitt, (right), a scenestealer of the highest order, but that this kidnapping story is more complicated and nimble than first appearances suggest. Tonight, detective Tom’s (Nesbitt) search appears to have been led down a false trail.

It’s gripping, rewarding viewing.

THE Raymond Terrace Croquet Club is hosted by the Raymond Terrace Bowling Club where players get together weekly to enjoy a social game of croquet.

“The Raymond Terrace Bowling Club has been fabulous, they have given us the use of a green, and mow grass for us.”

All of the croquet players are registered members of the Raymond Terrace Bowling Club.

“The members are very happy playing on the lawn at Raymond Terrace Bowling Club.”

The group started with 10 players and there are now 36 players out with their mallets taking aim at hoops.

“Croquet is a great social activity, we

sometimes visit other clubs like Gloucester Croquet Club and are currently looking to host Gloucester at Raymond Terrace in the not too distant future,” she said.

Other clubs that the members are planning on reciprocal visits with include the croquet club at Fern Bay. Croquet is a very social game and you don’t need a high level of fitness to be a part of it.

particularly important for community members as they get older and croquet offers a mental challenge, tying to light physical activity while creating positive social connections.

“There are couples, and singles in the club and at the end of each day we go home feeling lighter,” she said.

Students Rise Up for Star Struck 2021

STAR Struck is back again in 2021 with the fitting theme ‘Rise Up’.

After a devastating cancellation in 2020 due to COVID-19, students from all over Newcastle, Port Stephens and the Central Coast are ready to hit the stage again in what is sure to be one of the biggest celebrations of the entertainment industry.

Star Struck is a show that features thousands of primary and high school students from the local area.

Students and schools have the opportunity to audition for roles in drama, dance, orchestra and singing, with only the very best being selected.

Casey Horner, Star Struck Operations Manager, said the theme of Rise Up was initially intended to show support to all those who had

endured bushfires and floods in 2019/20.

“It was symbolic of the rising up from the elements, from people working together to Rise Up from adversity,”

said Ms Horner.

“Now after another year of hardship and change the theme seems equally fitting, and a positive way to come together once again.

23 MAY 2021 - A WRAP up of our 2021 Saturday Pennants results: No.2 Grade finished in 4th Place with 34 points, No.4 Grade struck some strong opposition and finished in 5th spot, No.6 Grade played a washed out game against Karuah on Sunday 23 May and won by 55-44 shots (9-1 points) and a possibility of finishing in 2nd place on the ladder pending results of other games.

No.7 (1) Grade had 2 washed out games to complete.

The first was played on Saturday 22 May against Tea Gardens at home which they won by 75-49 shots (9-1 points) and the second on Sunday 23 May against

the Section leaders, Nelson Bay also at home and comprehensively defeated them by 77-33 shots and the 10 Competition points earned propelled them past Nelson Bay and a Section win.

Our No.7 (2) Grade had already sealed their Section win when they defeated Valentine the previous week.

The two 7 Grade Sides and possibly the 6 Grade Side will proceed to the District playoffs next Saturday.

The Club Championship Pairs Semi – Finals and Final were finally completed last weekend. The Semi-Finals played on Saturday 22 May resulted in wins by Dave Phillips / Adam Clements (Skip) over Grahame Nash /

Dick Hadley by 20-16 shots and Brian Hitchcock / Tony Baker defeated Paul Wilson / Ric Clark by 24-10 shots.

The Final played the next day on Sunday 23 May proved to be a one sided affair with the Pairing of Brian and Tony never threatening, running out winners by 25-9 shots over the combination of Dave and Adam.

An interesting statistic pointed out to Jack High by one of the Semi-Finalists is that between the eight players they have won 21 Pairs Titles: Brian Hitchcock 4, Tony Baker 4, Paul Wilson 5, Ric Clark 3, Dick Hadley 4 and Grahame Nash 1.

For workers in animal rehabilitation there is no more magical moment than when a creature in your care is returned to the wild.

In Gabbi’s case this was a six month journey.

She was rescued in a terrible condition in December 2020.

When Gabbi initially came into the care of Sea Shelter at Irukandji Shark and Ray Encounters she was injured, underweight and lethargic.

Firearms, drugs, jewellery seized, man charged after pursuit

FIREARMS, drugs and jewellery have been seized after a man was arrested following a pursuit through the Port Stephens-Hunter region.

Officers from Port Stephens-Hunter Police District saw a Toyota Hilux utility being driven along Government Road at Nelson Bay about 11.15pm on Saturday 22 May 2021, and directed the driver to stop due to him being wanted on outstanding warrants.

Police will allege the driver, a 38-year-old man, instead accelerated and a pursuit was initiated through the suburbs of Nelson Bay, Salt Ash and Medowie, reaching speeds of up to 130km/h.

Two police vehicles were allegedly struck by the utility in Ferodale Road, Medowie, which continued at low speed due to sustaining significant damage.

No police were injured.

About 11.50pm the driver left the ute on

Federation Drive and ran into bushland.

Assistance was sought from the PolAir with the crew locating the man hiding in bushland a short time later.

He was arrested without further incident.

When the ute was searched police seized a homemade firearm, a starter pistol, methamphetamine, and jewellery believed to be stolen He was taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station, where he was charged with three outstanding warrants including a conviction warrant, revocation of parole warrant and breach of corrective order.

He has been refused bail to appear in Newcastle Local Court on Sunday 23 May 2021.

Charges are pending relating to the pursuit and seizure of the firearms, drugs and jewellery.

Second State Championship for Nelson Bay Croquet Club TAREE Croquet Club hosted the NSW Golf Croquet Handicap Singles State Championship from 14 to 16 May 2021. Six players from around the State entered but the Championship was contested despite the modest numbers.

The numbers meant the Championship was played as a double round-robin.

Peter Gordon entered from Nelson Bay and he won the day, winning 8 from 10 games.

In the final game, Peter played Bernie McAlary (Wollongong) with them standing 1st and 2nd respectively with one game to play. q Peter Gordon.

Peter needed to win or to score at least 4 hoops in losing – he lost 5-7 meaning Peter and Bernie finished on 8 wins each, but Peter was declared the winner on hoop count back.

FROM 21-23 May, CALM Inc, headspace and Newcastle Football supported a Mental Health Round to assist raise awareness and break the stigma surrounding Mental Health within the football and greater community.

Northern NSW Football CEO David Eland said the governing body remained committed to shining a light on mental health following the success and acceptance of the inaugural Mental Health Round in 2020.

“Football is the largest participation sport in the country, we have the capacity to directly communicate with thousands of players, coaches, volunteers and match officials, many of whom are young people.
