By Tara CAMPBELL MERYL Swanson has been re-elected by the Paterson electorate for another term in Federal parliament.

With some votes still to be counted, it has been declared that Meryl Swanson will retain the seat of Paterson for the Labor Party.

With an approximate 53.5 percent of votes (correct as of Monday 23 May), Ms Swanson has been re-elected for a third term since her election in 2016.

Gillespie retains Lyne

DR DAVID Gillespie has been reelected to represent the seat of Lyne.

With almost all votes counted for the electorate, The Nationals’ candidate, current member Dr David Gillespie, has been declared re-elected with over 64.5 percent of the votes.

First-time Labor candidate Alex Simpson won approximately 35.5 percent of the votes, followed

by Josephine Cashman (One Nation) and Karl Attenborough (Greens) with 7.8 percent and 7.4 percent respectively.

Dr Gillespie says that he is incredibly thankful to the community and all those who volunteered their time to assist in his re-election.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to wholeheartedly thank the people of the Lyne electorate for their overwhelming support in re-electing me as their local Federal MP. “I look forward to working for the whole electorate with my colleagues both in the Coalition and across the Parliament over the course of the next term to continue to make Australia and our region even stronger,” Dr Gillespie said.

As a member of The Nationals, Gillespie stood as

a member of the Coalition between the Liberal and Nationals parties.

“Unfortunately, the Coalition Government was not returned.

“In Government, we were able to achieve much for our nation and our local area, particularly during the challenging times of the COVID pandemic," he said.

Nationwide at the time of publishing, The Nationals had received approximately 4.1 percent of votes with a -0.3 percent swing, winning nine seats.

Six of these seats are in New South Wales with a -0.8 percent swing in votes.

This will be Gillespie’s fourth term as Lyne MP after serving in

the position since 2013.

During this time, he has served in many roles in the Parliament, including Minister for Regional Health, Minister Assisting the Minister for Trade and Investment, Assistant Minister for Children and Families, Assistant Minister for Health and Assistant Minister for Rural Health.

Dr Gillespie says that he wants to see Australian business, particularly small business, released from unnecessary government red-tape and greentape.

“I understand the complexity and pressures of primary production in Australia and want to continue to work to ensure primary producers and processors receive equitable treatment by retailers under Australia’s consumer and competition laws,” he said.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau described the two countries as "being close friends" and said he was looking forward to tackling global issues together.

"I'm looking forward to building on that with you, moving forward with progressive ideas, tackling climate change, and delivering results for people in both our countries," he said.

Albanese’s election sees the first change in power since 2013, where the last Labor Prime Minister Kevin Rudd was defeated by Liberal Tony Abbott.

“My promise is to bring the nation together and promote unity and optimism, not fear and division.

“Thank you, Australia,” he said.

Australia elects Anthony Albanese as 31st Prime Minister

ANTHONY Albanese has been declared the 31st Prime Minister of Australia.

With votes still being counted, it has been determined that the Australian Labor Party has a large enough lead that Mr Albanese will replace Scott Morrison as the Prime Minister.

The son of a single parent who grew up in public housing, Mr Albanese has reached the pinnacle of his government career after 26 years in the parliament.

"It is an incredible honour," Mr Albanese told reporters after leaving his house to head to speak at a party event.

Mr Albanese said he hoped his story would inspire a future generation of Australian leaders.

"My mother dreamt of a better life for me, and I hope that my journey in life inspires Australians to reach for the stars.

"I want Australia to continue to be a country that, no matter where you live, who you worship, who you love or what your last name is, places no restrictions on your journey in life,” he said.

Anthony Albanese entered politics in 1996 when he was elected as the Federal Member for Grayndler and in 2006 earned the title of Labor’s Shadow Minister for the Environment.

He eventually became Australia’s first Federal Infrastructure Minister and in 2013, under the new Rudd Labor Government, he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and finally, unanimously in 2019, Anthony was elected as the new Leader of the Australian Labor Party.

Growing up, Albanese said that it wasn’t easy; being the first person in his family to finish school, let alone university.

Get Back in the Game Program expands to Port Stephens

DISENGAGED youth in Port Stephens region will now benefit from an expansion of the NSW Government’s ‘Get Back in the Game’ program.

The initiative aims to connect young people aged fifteen to nineteen years old with education, training and employment, supported by seven community-based youth support organisations.

Get Back in the Game will focus on young people who are still at school but struggling to engage with education as well as those who have left school but are finding it difficult to make effective transitions into training or employment.

Minister for Education

and Early Learning Sarah Mitchell said the highly successful Get Back in the Game program is now being expanded to support additional people across the state, particularly in the Hunter region.

“More than 7,000 young people have discovered areas of interest, developed career plans, and either engaged in work or training or headed back to complete their secondary school education, since the program started in 2016,” Ms Mitchell said.

“This expansion will further the program’s reach and help more young people finish school, access training and get a job.”

“We want to ensure that every young person in NSW has an opportunity to reach their potential and find a job they want,” Mr Henskens said.

Voluntary Assisted Dying Passes in NSW

Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill has passed in the NSW Parliament.

Co-sponsored by Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington and Member for Newcastle Tim Crackanthorp, the Bill passed provides for and regulates access to voluntary assisted dying in New South Wales.

On Thursday, following a mammoth late-night debate, New South Wales became the final state in Australia to pass voluntary assisted dying legislation.

Six months ago the Bill passed the state’s lower house, and officially passed just after 12:30pm on

Thursday May 19.

The Bill was spearheaded

by Independent MP Alex Greenwich with 28 cosponsors last year after a series of failed past attempts.

He said the bill marked a moment in which NSW “finally passed a threshold of honesty and compassion”.

“Honesty that not all people die well, and compassion that people with advanced and cruel terminal illnesses will have the same end-of-care options as those in every other state,” he said.

The Bill limits access to voluntary assisted dying to people with terminal illnesses who will die within six months, or twelve months in the case of a person with a

neurodegenerative condition experiencing unbearable suffering.

The person must be found to have capacity to make the decision to go ahead voluntarily without duress, and the application would be assessed by two medical practitioners.

Supporters had hoped the bill would pass on Wednesday night, but after a large-scale debate in which opponents moved some 90 amendments in a late-night filibuster attempt, it passed the upper house on Thursday afternoon.

One of the Bill’s opponents, Employee Relations Minister Damien Tudehope, said the Bill

“betrayed” people suffering from a terminal illness.

“Some will say this is a great moment for NSW,” he said.

“I will leave here today thinking this is a dark day for our state.”

Co-sponsor Kate Washington expressed her gratitude for the support of all those involved which supported the Bill.

“Today, New South Wales has become a more compassionate state,” she said.

Freshwater Farm collaborate with Worimi artist

LOCAL Worimi artist Brittney Paulson has collaborated with Great Lakes Freshwater Farm to raise funds for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.

This week saw the celebration of a successful collaboration between Indigenous artist Brittney Paulson and Northern Beachesbased business Freshwater Farm, which farms in the Great Lakes region.

Earlier in the year, Brittney Paulson was given the chance to collaborate with Freshwater Farm to design imagery for a limited-edition hand wash and soap bar in which 20 cents from every item sold would be going to the charity.

Brittney created a beautiful piece called ‘Where the land meets the sea’, depicting the Great Lakes area on the Mid North Coast of NSW where Freshwater Farm is located.

On a rainy Sydney day, the sunshine briefly appeared when CEO and Founder Al Hutcherson presented a cheque for $26,600 to Indigenous Literacy Foundation representative Laura Atherden, with the help of Brittney Paulson.

Ms Atherden said that she was thrilled at the amount raised.

Tradies challenging stereotypes DURING National Careers Week (May 16-22), locals considering a professional pivot were urged to look to TAFE NSW to challenge stereotypes and follow their passions.

Minister for Skills and Tertiary Education Alister Henskens said with enrolments for many courses now open for semester two, the time was right for Port Stephens residents to get the in-demand skills for the jobs they want.

It comes as new research reveals women comprise only two percent of workers in construction.

TAFE NSW provides women with pathways into a range of construction trades and already boasts a comparatively higher proportion of female enrolments in construction courses at nine percent.

Four trapped after Tea Gardens crash

MULTIPLE persons were trapped following a vehicle incident at Tea Gardens last week.

The incident was managed by a multidisciplinary team, with members of the Port Stephens SES and the Tea Gardens Fire and Rescue Unit in attendance.

Port Stephens SES Unit was activated by Police to assist Fire and Rescue NSW Tea Gardens and the NSW Ambulance Service at an incident with a car on its side, with multiple persons trapped in the vehicle.

The SES unit responded with the Medium Rescue Vehicle and the Rapid Intervention Vehicle, along with seven accredited Rescue Operators to the scene, leaving the Heavy Rescue Vehicle and six Rescue Operators on call for Port Stephens area coverage.

On scene, crews found a vehicle that had left the road, travelled across a ditch, impacted with a tree and flipped onto its side.

The two occupants in the vehicle were trapped by confinement and compression.

The rescue involved stabilising the vehicle to

NSW Ambulance paramedics worked to treat the casualties, and a roof removal was then performed using hydraulic tools, as rescue crews worked to release the casualties from the vehicle.

EACH year, Shoal Bay Country Club (SBCC) collects $10 from its members and chooses two charities to donate all of the money to.

Along with ongoing support for local sporting groups such as the Fingal Bay Bomboras, plus recently hosting a charity event for COPSY, SBCC also donates 100 percent of membership fees to local charities each year.

Peter Lazarus, Director, Shoal Bay Country Club, told News Of The Area, “It is extremely important for us to connect with our locals and support the community as much as possible.

“In 2021, thanks to our members, we raised a huge $8000 that we can give back to the local community.”

The chosen charities this year are PCYC Port Stephens and the Fingal Bay Surf Life Saving Club Starfish Nippers Program.

“Children are our future and this year we have chosen to donate to two wonderful organisations that work directly with local kids.”

PCYC runs a number of programs to support young people and give them practical skills to thrive in life.

an adapted nippers program for children with special needs.

The Starfish Nippers Program is run by volunteers.

THE NSW Government has passed significant legislative amendments to enable RSL NSW sub-Branches across the State to improve their governance and accountability.

Following the passing of the Bill on Tuesday, amendments have been made to the RSL NSW Act 2018 which will see RSL NSW subBranches who are looking to reconstitute as companies limited by guarantee under the Corporations Act 2001, be exempted from duties that would be otherwise paid during the process of incorporation.

Minister for Finance and Employee Relations Damien Tudehope said the RSL NSW Amendment Bill 2022 will greatly assist in improving the governance and transparency of sub-Branches.

“We have removed a major barrier for RSL NSW sub-Branches to pursue the process of incorporation and this will greatly assist them in their operations, by modernising and achieving an enduring governance structure, where assets and property are not tied to individual members,” Mr Tudehope said.

RSL NSW President Ray James said these changes would have a positive impact on the operations of the subBranches and is encouraging

the sub-Branches of the RSL NSW to incorporate.

“The passage of this amendment further demonstrates that the NSW Government is responsive to the needs of RSL NSW and its members,” Mr James said.

“The new laws will ensure that the RSL can focus its charitable funds on supporting veterans and their families.”

The new laws will reduce considerable expenses for sub-Branches of RSL NSW, allowing the focus to be placed on supporting returned servicewomen and men.

“The NSW Government is committed to continuing to drive changes to ensure our veterans receive the best available support.

“If sub-Branches pursued the process of incorporation without this amendment, it could significantly deplete cash reserves, which in turn hinders charitable operations and support for local commemorations,” Mr Tudehope said.

The Government has also recently lodged its submission to the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide, which acknowledged the enhanced role that RSL NSW and its sub-Branches could play in the future to provide localised supports for our servicemen and servicewomen transitioning to civilian life.

Irrawang Public School’s Ella Mawby and Victoria Miller received their awards for commemorating respectfully at the ANZAC Day ceremony.

Similarly, Ben Hillock of Salt Ash Public School was recognised for his efforts in assisting younger students during the ANZAC parade, ensuring they were safe at all times and for his efforts at the Captain morning tea.

Changes On Horizon For Fishing Industry

THE Port Stephens fishing fleet has been through an uphill battle throughout COVID with difficulties in getting their catch to lucrative markets being one hurdle that has cost boats and crews dearly.

Now the NSW Government has announced a new strategic roadmap hoped to strengthen the commercial fishing sector over the next three years.

Minister for Agriculture and Western NSW Dugald Saunders said he has engaged the Commercial Fishing NSW Advisory Council (CommFish NSW) to work hand in hand with industry to develop the sustainable seafood strategy.

“The new plan will drive productivity, remove out-of-date regulations, promote innovation and strengthen the industry as a whole,” Mr Saunders said.

"We want to restore confidence and certainty for the sector, while also addressing longer-term challenges, after significant COVID-19 disruptions, bushfires and floods.”

CommFish NSW will seek advice from commercial fishers to get their input on several priority areas, including: regulatory reform; improved business systems, such as a digital trading platform and electronic data collection; seafood product innovation and promotional grants to boost consumption and value; ways to increase industry engagement; and harvest strategies to provide more certainty for the

“The fishing sector is vital to maintain the economic, social and cultural richness of regional communities right up and down the NSW coast.”

The NSW Government will also support the ongoing rollout of harvest strategies to establish agreed management frameworks for key stocks, starting with the release of the NSW Trawl Whiting and Lobster Fishery harvest strategies.

“Harvest strategies help give commercial, recreational and Aboriginal cultural fishers greater certainty about how our fisheries will be maintained moving forward,” Mr Saunders said.

“The NSW Lobster Strategy, for example, establishes management objectives and rules for changes in harvest levels to help ensure the species is in stock for years to come.”

These plans also set the stage for a future of improved collaboration and transparency in fisheries management decisions.

Work is currently underway to develop additional harvest strategies for Spanner Crab and Mulloway, with more key species to follow later this year.

The club's members are looking forward to an August coach trip to the Auburn Cherry Blossom Festival.

Margaret Wilkinson, the Christmas Bush Garden Club Secretary, told News Of The Area, “The Club is looking to welcome new members offering like minded members of our community, young or old, male or female, the opportunity to get together to share garden ideas and activity.

“We are aware that younger people were drawn to gardening during the COVID lockdowns.

“They can come along and learn more from experienced gardeners as well as share their own ideas,” she said.

LOCALLY residents have been doing their bit to recycle and keep the environment clean by using the Return and Earn facilities.

While some choose to take a cash payment for their recycling, others use their waste to support local charities like the Port Stephens Koala Hospital that take a turn at being a featured charity at local collection centres.

Now, more return points are being added to the NSW Government’s popular Return and Earn scheme after a new contract was signed with network operator TOMRA Cleanaway.

Minister for Environment James Griffin said the container deposit scheme has seen more than 7.4 billion containers returned since it began in 2017, and millions of dollars returned to the people of NSW and charities.

“Return and Earn started out as a litter prevention program, and it has succeeded in that, achieving a 52 percent reduction in the volume of drink container litter and recycling more than 672,000 tonnes in materials,” Mr Griffin said.

“And now, five years on, Return and Earn has transformed into one of the most successful and trusted recycling initiatives Australia has seen, with more than 600 return points across NSW, at least 330 of which are Reverse Vending Machines.

“Return and Earn is the circular economy in action.

“It’s helping us clean up our environment, turning trash into treasure, and fundamentally shifting the way people think about used drink containers.”

Under the new contract with the incumbent network operator, TOMRA Cleanaway will continue expanding the Return and Earn network with 48 new return point locations.

These will increase coverage across NSW, with many of the new return points in regional towns.

More than 78 percent of adults have used Return and Earn, and two-thirds do so once a month or more.

TOMRA Cleanaway CEO James Dorney welcomed the contract extension and said he looks forward to continuing working with the NSW Environment Protection Authority and the scheme coordinator Exchange for Change.

“Working with our partners, we look forward to building upon the incredible successes of the Scheme to date and the positive environmental, charity and community outcomes delivered as part of the circular

economy in NSW,” Mr Dorney said.

The renewal and expansion of the contract isn’t just good news for the environment, it’s also good news for charities, with more than $30 million raised for charities and community groups via donations and fees since the scheme commenced.

St Vincent de Paul Society NSW CEO Jack de Groot said through the partnership, they’ve developed a valuable new income stream to support their work.

“It started out with over-the-counter collections in Vinnies Shops across Western Sydney and the Illawarra,” Mr de Groot said.

“We have now evolved our operation to seven automated depots across NSW, and outstanding community support has meant we will soon have processed 300 million containers.”

AFL Masters has launched QuickKick, a fun, relaxed, fortnightly gathering of like-minded women who have always wanted to give footy a go but never got the chance when they were younger.

The objective of the project is to deliver a sport that is inclusive, fun, safe and provides a sense of belonging to participants.

It aims to provide a cost-

attractive option for those seeking either physical fitness or social interaction amongst aged-peers whilst also developing the next generation of coaches.

The concept is proving a popular one, with more than 2,000 people signed up within days of QuickKick’s launch.

The AFL Masters QuickKick is an introductory program which is designed to teach the basics in footy – from handballing and kicking, to marking and bouncing.

Six fortnightly sessions will be held between May and September.

It will conclude in the sixth week with a fun match between the participants.
