Two teens arrested following school fire – Raymond Terrace FROM Page 1

Officers from Port-Stephens Hunter Police District attended and found two demountable buildings engulfed by flames.

Fire and Rescue NSW attended and extinguished the

blaze, which had destroyed the buildings.

On inspection of other buildings within the school grounds, a number of classrooms had been broken into and vandalised causing significant damage.

Two teenage boys, aged fourteen and fifteen, have been arrested and taken to Raymond Police Station where they remain.

A crime scene was established and will be examined by specialist forensic officers.

Inquiries continue.

Emergency Services Update

National Emergency Medal Members from Karuah RFS, Anna Bay Rural Fire Brigade and Raymond Terrace Rural Fire Brigade were awarded a National Emergency Service Medal on Monday 14 March at Lower Hunter Fire Control, for services during 2019-2020 bush fires.

These awards Deputy Commissioner Peter McKechie to people who rendered sustained or significant service during nationally-significant emergencies in Australia.

Congratulations on this recognition.

Soldiers Point Fireboat This weekend saw six local members from the Soldiers Point Rural Fire Brigade begin the Fire Boat Crew course.

It’s an important qualification to help members man the Soldiers Point Fireboat.

Work includes both theory and practical components including boat work, rope work and the important swim test.

The crew were lucky enough to have some great weather, albeit a bit of a current did see the huddle drift away a bit.

Operation FUME On Friday 11 and 12 March, as part of Statewide Operation FUME, targeting alcohol/drug/impaired driving, police from Raymond Terrace Highway Patrol and Port Stephens-Hunter PD Police targeted drivers in the Port Stephens-Hunter District.

As a result there were 390 Roadside Drug Tests (RDT) with seven positives, 421 Roadside Breath Tests (RBT) with two PCA’s, eighteen Traffic Infringement Notices and

four charges.

Operation Rural Roads On Wednesday 16 March Operation 'Rural Roads’ was conducted in the Lemon Tree Passage Sector covering the suburbs of Lemon Tree Passage, Mallabula, Tanilba Bay, Oyster Cove, Salt Ash and Bobs Farm.

Officers attached to the Port Stephens Hunter Police District Outstations and four officers attached to the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command - Port Stephens were deployed to the operation with the aim of reducing road trauma in and around the above suburbs through high visibility, random drug and alcohol testing and community engagement. During the operation Police conducted a total of 921 Random Breath Tests and ten Random Drug Tests.

Candlelight Vigil for 109 Foreshore Drive q

Community members held a candlelight vigil to shine a light on the need to save 109 Foreshore Drive and reclassify it as community land.

A CANDLELIGHT vigil was held on Sunday at 109 Foreshore Drive, Salamander Bay as the fight continues to stop the sale of the block of land and to have it reclassified as community land - with around 160 local residents attending the event.

Locals say koalas are often seen on this block of land and use it to access the beach where they have been seen licking salt from the sands.

Members of the community enjoyed a stunning sunset as they quietly reflected upon the need to preserve community assets and open spaces on the foreshore.

Port Stephens Councillor Leah Anderson took a stand on the site during her election campaign and is continuing to advocate for the land to

be saved for community use.

She has been a volunteer for Port Stephens Koalas for many years and has seen first hand the need to protect habitat and health of our local population of koalas.

Councillor Anderson told News Of The Area, “This week, I watched back the

Council Webcasts from 2018 when former councillor John Nell went to great lengths to save this land for the community, because he was listening to his community.

“He was supported by West Ward Councillor Giacomo Arnott, because he was listening to the East Ward

community.

“In 2018 the battle was not won, and now the community, four years on, is still fighting to save this land for our community, our environment, and our koalas, yet again.

“I made a commitment to our community during

my election campaign, that I would listen to them, and I would act on their behalf, as an elected representative should.

“I am doing just that.

Changed overnight traffic conditions on Pacific Highway at Hexham Bridge MOTORISTS are advised of changed overnight traffic conditions from next week on the Pacific Highway to carry out safety improvement work on Hexham Bridge.

Transport for NSW will carry out the work from Monday 21 March including truss steel repairs, maintenance to the lift span, and general routine works to the bridge deck and expansion joints.

The southbound bridge will be closed during the work.

All traffic will be diverted onto the northbound bridge, which will operate with one lane in each direction.

No work will be carried

To minimise impact on motorists, work will be carried out from 8pm to 5am Sunday to Thursday.

Work is expected to be complete in eight weeks, weather permitting.

NAPLAN to change from 2023

FOR students participating in NAPLAN, the testing can be the source of some anxiety, however getting the results can help teachers to tailor programs to better meet student needs.

Improvements to NAPLAN were announced last week, including moving the test to Term 1 and returning results much earlier, and will be implemented from 2023 following a review led by NSW. Minister for Education and Early Learning Sarah Mitchell said she was pleased that changes were happening in line with the review initiated by NSW in 2019 to make NAPLAN a more effective diagnostic tool.

“These are necessary changes I have been pushing for over the past two years, particularly following the success of the NSW CheckIn Assessments, which give teachers results within 48 hours,” Ms Mitchell said.

“Currently the timing of NAPLAN means it is not diagnostic, as students sit the tests quite late and results are delivered months later, minimising their value in the classroom.”

The 2019 Review recommended the test be brought forward from May to as early as possible in the year, so that results can be used more

productively by schools and teachers.

From 2023, NAPLAN tests will move to Term 1, with all results except for writing delivered earlier.

“Delivering results earlier in the year means teachers have a better understanding of where their students are at and can develop classroom programs accordingly,” Ms Mitchell said.

“This is a win for teachers, students and their families.

“It ensures the assessment can be used more effectively, and provides greater opportunity to improve learning outcomes.”

In addition to these changes, from Term 2 2024 schools will also be able to opt-in to additional assessments for Year 6 and 10 students, starting with Science in 2024, Civics and Citizenship in 2025, and Digital Literacy in 2026.

With NAPLAN successfully undertaken across the country in 2021, the My School website has now been updated with school-level NAPLAN data.

“My School is an excellent resource to help parents, schools and governments understand the performance of schools,” said Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACA-

RA) CEO David de Carvalho.

Over the last three years, My School has had an average of 2.3 million visitors.

The ‘Student progress’ information on the My School website includes tables showing the percentage of students at the school whose progress was better than expected, given the school’s average score two years ago and the level of community socio-educational advantage.

In the 2022 update, more than 500 Australian schools showed well above the average progress of students with the same starting score and similar backgrounds for at least one domain and more than 30 percent of these schools were in regional or remote areas.

My School includes an Index of Community SocioEducational Advantage (ICSEA) that indicates the average educational advantage of the school’s students and is calculated using information about a parent’s occupation and education, school geographical location and the proportion of Indigenous students.

A school’s ICSEA value is provided to encourage taking socio-educational advantage into account when comparing school achievement.

“Too often, media organisations try to construct

crude ‘league tables’ based on overall achievement without considering the schools’ level of socio-educational advantage or the amount of progress the students have made in the previous two years.

“Such comparisons are

Former emergency service chiefs speak out

WHILE some parts of the Port Stephens and Myall Coast regions fared reasonably well during the recent flood crisis, others weren’t so lucky, and now 37 former emergency service chiefs have spoken out on the Federal Government’s management of the crisis.

Emergency Leaders for Climate Action (ELCA) launched their statement in Brisbane last Monday, citing evidence that the Government was warned ahead of the 2022 floods and did little in response.

Greg Mullins was a Former Commissioner of Fire & Rescue NSW, one of Australia’s longest-ever serving fire chiefs, and is now leader of Emergency Leaders for Climate Action.

“The Federal Government’s fumbling of this flood disaster is Black Summer all over again,” he said.

“Last October, charity leaders met with the Federal Government and were warned of massive flooding this summer.

“The Government knew what was coming and it did not adequately prepare our communities or first responders.

“Time and again this Government fails to listen to ex-

pert advice.

“There are 80 recommendations of the Royal Commis-

sion into National Natural Disaster Arrangements gathering dust.

“The Government has failed to imple-

“Those of us who do hold hoses know just how dangerous climate change has become.

“Australia is under-prepared, and Canberra has no answers to how it will rapidly slash emissions this decade.”

Former Deputy Director General of the NSW State Emergency Service, ELCA member and flood expert Chas Keys said, “This disaster’s shown us that we can’t continue with business as usual.

“Bandying about terms like ‘onein-500 year’ flood is meaningless to people who are experiencing such disasters repeatedly.

“Above all else, we need the Federal Government to take climate change seriously by cutting back drastically on the mining and burning of fossil fuels.

“We also need to reset the way we manage disasters, with spending between mitigation versus relief and recovery completely out of kilter.

“There is no more manageable hazard in Australia than flooding: we know where it will occur, we’re usually warned ahead of it and we can predict what its effects will be.

“We’re just not managing this risk well, and it hurts us over and over again to a greater extent than it should.”

City of Newcastle will become just the second council in Australia to take part in the Curby Soft Plastics Program, following an initial roll-out on the Central Coast last year proved popular.

The initiative, which is run in conjunction with Australian recyclers iQ Renew and CurbCycle, gives residents a free, home-based option to recycle clean, soft plastics that are not able to be placed loosely in their yellowlid kerbside bin, including shopping bags, chip packets, bread bags and bubble wrap.

Currently, these items can only be recycled through community drop-off sites such as the REDcycle bins found at selected supermarkets.

The limited number of locations means that around 94 percent of soft plastics across Australia still end up in landfill or being disposed of as litter, causing significant damage to the environment

and marine life.

Deputy Lord Mayor Declan Clausen said the Curby Program would complement City of Newcastle's suite of waste-recovery initiatives, which are all designed to reduce the amount of rubbish going to landfill.

"City of Newcastle is focused on the delivery of programs, education and infrastructure that will increase our capabilities for the recycling and reuse of waste products and reduce the amount of resources going to landfill, including the proposed development of a local recycling facility at Summerhill to cater to the yellow lidded bin," Cr Clausen said.

"By weight, soft plastics make up a small component of the household waste that ends up at the Summerhill Waste Management Centre.

“However, given their lightweight nature, they can sometimes be picked up by the wind and escape into the environment, where they pose a serious threat to our native animals and marine life.

"While reducing the amount of soft plastic we use is the best solution for our

environment, this program ensures residents also have a more convenient means of recycling their plastics, keeping them out of landfill and giving them a second life through their processing and conversion into a new material, which can be reused to make everything from low carbon cement to new plastic products and plastic film.”

Program has over 11,000 participants on the Central Coast and collected more than 40 tonnes of soft plastics to date, which is the equivalent of about seven million plastic bags.

Tilligerry Family Community Garden

By Jane CROCKER GARDENING has become an increasingly popular pursuit over the last couple of years.

The pandemic has seen more people spending time in their gardens as a recreational activity and generated a growing awareness of sustainable living practices.

The Tilligerry Habitat Centre has long been home to several garden beds that were tended by locals as a community garden.

Unfortunately, the lengthy closure of the centre during the Covid lockdowns saw a

number of the regular gardeners move on and the space was looking for the next generation of green fingered enthusiasts.

Locals Alandra Jones and Bryony Tamsett volunteered to take on the space with a plan to nurture it as a family friendly community garden.

Speaking to News Of The Area, Alandra said, “We had heard that the gardens were not being used and that they were at risk of being shut down.

“There are lots of young families in the area that either don’t have access to garden space or live in rental property that may limit their ability to cultivate a garden over a longer period of time.

“We want to create a fam-

ily friendly space that inspires people to come along to learn about plants and gardening, whilst giving the kids an opportunity to get their hands dirty.”

Alandra and Bryony both have some great ideas for the garden, which include planting veggies, learning about native plants, creating a mud kitchen for the kids and generating some amazing compost to feed the plants.

They are keen for others to join them and share in the planning, planting and nurturing of the garden.

The gardens are accessible during the opening hours of the centre and either Alandra or Bryony can be found there on a Wednesday or Friday.

Summer Nights Markets

SUMMER nights are still in full swing with Homegrown Markets arriving on the waterfront at Lemon Tree passage last Friday night.

The market is hosted with the support of Port Stephens Council and sponsored by the NSW Government’s Festival of Place Summer Nights fund.

Homegrown Markets was established in 2019 by Lauren and Lewis.

As former stallholders they saw that there was an opportunity to develop a regular market schedule, giving small local businesses the chance to reach new communities.

Their initial focus was the Newcastle, Hunter and Lake Macquarie areas and

despite the challenge of Covid, proved to be very popular.

The markets have been successfully running on Nelson Bay Foreshore for a number of months, and now with the additional Council support are hoping to establish more regular events in Lemon Tree Passage, Medowie and Raymond Terrace.

“The markets are designed to make shopping locally easy and accessible,” Lauren explained.

“We started with around 50 interested stallholders, which has grown in the last three years to around 350.

“Our markets are designed for stalls that sell handmade or locally designed products and provide a space for local businesses to showcase both their products and talent.

“We are passionate about celebrating community and supporting small businesses.

“The markets are set up to be family friendly with a happy and fun vibe.”

The Summer Nights market series continues in Riverside Park, Raymond Terrace on 1 April and Boyd Oval, Medowie on 29 April.

“Our role in following up on the smaller plants and those mixed with the native plants weeks after broader treatment, helps ensure Bitou does not rapidly overtake the site again,” said Friends of Tomaree co-coordinator Josephine O’Brien.

Participants do not need prior knowledge to make a worthwhile and appreciated contribution.

“A briefing at the start will ensure everyone knows the target weeds and easily confused native plants.

“There will also be some experienced Friends of Tomaree on hand to help,” said Ms O’Brien.

“As well as Bitou, we’ll be marking the location of any Chinese Violet we see, a highly invasive ground dwelling and climbing weed arriving in Australia at Boat Harbour, and restricted mainly to Port Stephens.”

This is a great opportunity to help repair environmental damage on the site, not only in removing highly invasive weeds, but also planting in the vicinity.

Participating is a great way to meet up with other caring people, outdoors in a safe airy environment.

The ‘Rejuvenate Kingsley Headland’ event is supported by the National Parks and Wildlife Service, as well as the Hunter Region Landcare Network and Hunter Local Land Services through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program.

Port Stephens Yacht Club 50th Anniversary

PORT Stephens Yacht Club has turned 50 and the anniversary was celebrated at the Soldiers Point Yacht Club in style.

The club’s members conducted a sail past at the race starting line at the Soldiers Point Boat Ramp car park under somewhat blustery conditions.

Races are held Wednesday and Saturday afternoons and offer great spectator opportunities at the start line and around the port.

The yachts are a diverse group and range from dinghy style vessels and large catamarans to serious ocean going racing yachts.

The universal signal flags were well represented, in-

cluding a set made by one of the club’s founding members which is over 50 years old and was seen on the catamaran ‘SubZero’.

One of the vessels that participated in the sail past, ‘51st Project’, has competed in the Sydney to Hobart and several are regular competitors in the Sail Port Stephens Regatta.

Some of the vessels flew flags that represent the countries and territories that they have visited including the

Torres Strait Islands, Norfolk Island, and our nearest neighbours Papua New Guinea.

Some of the fleet and their owners have sailed some of the most challenging courses on the globe, including circumnavigating Australia and even crossing the Atlantic!

Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington and Port Stephens Councillor Leah Anderson were among the special guests and both have committed to a sail on Port Stephens in the coming weeks.

Cr Anderson told News Of The Area, “The sail past was wonderful.

“I didn’t know that the club was open to the public twice a week and I look forward to visiting in the future,” she said.

A book of the history of the club has been compiled by local Robin Foley.

Sail Port Stephens is on the calendar and for those who like to watch the Bay there are soon to be more spectacular sights on our waterway.

“We know sharks can be extremely dangerous and aggressive, but they’re also part of what makes NSW’s marine life so beautiful, so we need to make sure we continue to have state-of-the-art technol-

ogy in place to allow them and beachgoers to coexist.

“There is no other jurisdiction in Australia or across the globe which has done as much testing and trialling of technology and approaches

to mitigate shark interactions, and our shark program is now the largest and most comprehensive in the world.”

Shark response capabilities enhanced

SHARK response capabilities will be enhanced at beaches across the state, with the NSW Government announcing a boost of $4.4 million for a suite of immediate additional mitigation methods, as well as ongoing funding of more than $85 million to continue this strategy until 2026.

Minister for Agriculture Dugald Saunders said shark interactions are always possible, regardless of the technologies deployed - but that it is critical for the NSW Government to do everything possible to reduce that risk to the millions of beachgoers who hit the water every year.

“We are not only announcing immediate additional response capabilities, including more Shark Listening Sta-

tions, SMART Drumlines and Rapid Response Vehicles, but we’re also committing to ongoing funding for future mitigation to protect our beachgoers for years to come.”

The immediate additional response package includes: 10 additional VR4G Listening Stations, 60 extra SMART drumlines, 500 more shark tags to trace sharks caught on an expanded drumline roll out, funding for four more Rapid Response Vessels, Long Range Drone Trials in partnership with Surf Life Saving NSW, additional Surf Life Saving resources to increase their presence at beaches and applied research into wetsuit materials to reduce the impact of shark attacks.

Shark Management Program has been introduced, that will extend the 51 nets currently deployed seasonally as part of the Shark Meshing Program, continue and expand the SMART drumline program whilst also establishing a First Responder Team to coordinate this response to shark incidents.

The 37 shark listening stations across the NSW coast will be kept and aerial surveillance utilising drones will be continued.

Partnering with Surf Life Saving NSW, the NSW Government is hoping to provide shark mitigation support and services such as trauma kits during riding competitions and surf schools.

Mr Saunders said that the target of this funding is coexistence safely.

Where there’s a will, there’s a way for a big-budget extravaganza such as The Amazing Race.

After more than 30 seasons of aeronautic, cross-country hijinks (hosted by Barry Keoghan), this 33rd season was initially cut short because of the pandemic. Teams kicked off the competition in February 2020, then resumed filming more than a year later in September 2021; that’s a lot of time to revise and game plan. Tonight, the finish is on the horizon: it’s the final leg, with three teams left ready to take on the trip from Lisbon, Portugal, to Los Angelesv. Filmed using a private jet to avoid COVID complications, the $1 million cash prize seems like a drop in the ocean in comparison.

“Currently there is no national framework to ensure that survivors of sexual, domestic and family violence can access trauma recovery services,” Ms Foster said.

“The focus is on the initial crisis when a victim-survivor attempts to flee the violence or the perpetrator comes into contact with the justice system, and so many survivors of sexual, domestic and family violence are left stranded in their recovery, having to navigate confusing systems and services, being forced to relive their trauma on a daily basis.

“GPs and other health professionals currently have no clear referral pathways for someone who discloses sexual, domestic and family violence, and survivors often have to go from service to service retelling their traumatic incident,” Ms Foster said.

“I just can't pass fishing rods put out with other junk for council collection,” he said.

“I get hold of them and restore them to their original condition,” he added.

“What really gets me excited are the split cane, bamboo and solid timber rods of yesteryear,” he stated.

“One English fly fishing rod and brass reel I spotted on the internet cost me more in postage than the gear itself.

“It was a very rare find and I was determined to claim it,” he said.

And his favourite rod?

“This has to be an English poacher's rod.

“It is short and breaks in two so it can be concealed under the poacher's coat!” he suggested.

“There needs to be a national framework to ensure that all survivors can access the trauma-informed care they need, and this should wrap around the individual, so that survivors aren’t left to carry the burden.”

“No matter your age, your gender, or where you live, if you have been impacted by sexual, domestic or family violence, you should be able to easily access appropriate services that

include a focus on recovery,” Ms Foster said.

Full Stop Australia says that this national ‘hub’ would ensure that all survivors in Australia can access localised, wrap-around care, regardless of where they first go to disclose their experiences of violence and abuse and no matter when the traumatic incidents occurred.

The organisation has a team of expert counsellors who are trauma specialists available 24 hours a day, seven days a week by telephone or online.

Calls To Stop Logging Native Forests

PORT Stephens and the MidCoast LGA’s have areas of state forest which are available for logging.

However, the Nature Conservation Council of NSW claims that logging native forests is not only driving species to extinction, the NSW Forestry Corporation’s annual report shows it is also costing taxpayers millions of dollars.

In 2020-21, the native forestry arm of the NSW Government’s logging company lost $20 million and prospects of it turning a profit any time soon are dim.

“This result should be good news for our native forests because there is now no rational economic argument for propping up that part of the industry,” Nature Conservation Council Chief Executive Chris Gambian said.

“The latest annual report shows NSW taxpayers unwittingly paying to cut down forests the people want protected.

“It’s not just ecologically and economically unsustainable, it is morally indefensible.

“If you’ve got the public, the scientists and even the bean-counters telling you to stop cutting down native forests, the government must listen and act.

“Taxpayer dollars should be used to protect forests, not destroy them.

“Victoria and Western Australia have announced end dates for native forest logging — NSW must do the same.

Mr Gambian said the government should not renew the 30 wood supply agreements with timber mills that will expire in 2023 but rather start talks with workers and the industry about transitioning out of native forest logging.

“The government will have to make a choice in the coming year,” Mr Gambian said.

“Will it lock in destructive native forest logging for years to come or will it develop a plan to transition to a sustainable, plantation-based timber industry?

“We strongly urge the government to end native forest logging and close this sad chapter in the state’s environmental history.”

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin told News Of The Area, “Native forests deliver a vast range of benefits for our communities, including regional tourism drawcards, clean waterways, habitat for protected wildlife,

biodiversity, carbon storage and responsible wood products.

“Only approximately one percent of native forests are harvested every year.

“The 2020-21 financial result reflects the lower level of timber harvesting operations which took place after the 2019-20 bushfires, which affected approximately 50 percent of native forests and a quarter of softwood plantations.

“This has resulted in a significant recovery program which will continue to see additional costs in road building and replanting.

“State forests generate renewable timber products like house framing, flooring, furniture and packaging in a way that is carefully managed, so that forest values are preserved and forests continue to grow and produce renewable timber in perpetuity.

TreX Triathlon Returns PORT Stephens is known for its beautiful and rugged terrain.

On Saturday March 26 the region will welcome some of the best athletes in the country to test themselves in the TreX Cross Triathlon, taking place in Fingal Bay and Tomaree National Park.

The Port Stephens event will give competitors and spectators the chance to enjoy a backdrop of some of Australia’s most spectacular beaches.

Athletes will take on the challenge of a swim, mountain bike and trail run in a race to the finish line on the iconic Fingal Bay Beach.

This event is also the Triathlon New South Wales State Championship and a qualification round for Australian athletes looking to qualify for the National Team to represent Australia at the World Championships in 2022.

The TreX series has long been at the forefront of this unique form of triathlon in Australia which takes the traditional format of the sport and mixes it with a huge helping of heart, guts, dirt and mud.

The challenge is as much with mother nature as it is against other athletes.

TreX Port Stephens contenders will tackle a challenging 1,000m swim in beautiful Fingal Bay, followed by 29kms

of heart pumping XC (Cross Country) mountain biking in Tomaree National Park, and then finishing off with an 8km trail run taking in the expansive coastal vistas that Port Stephens is famed for.

The event also includes sprint, junior, teaser, dirt kids, duathlon and aquabike courses with something for all ages and abilities.

The course holds some special experiences for athletes as Event Director Robyn Lazenby told News Of The Area, “Runners will start from spectacular Fingal Bay and then take on the challenge of diverse terrain and aweinspiring scenery throughout the Port Stephens region.

“From the beauty of Tomaree National Park, to the expansive views from coastal trails and the challenge of Samurai Dunes, this course showcases the very best of this spectacular destination.

“Athletes might even see one of the many migrating Humpback or Southern Right Whales, or a friendly school of dolphins along the way.”

Athletes also have the option of taking on the NSW Dirt Master Challenge where they will compete across two-days with the aim to record the fastest cumulative time for both events to take home the crown of Dirt Master or Dirt Mistress champion.

Pension Increase

FIVE million Australians will benefit from the largest increase in social security payments since 2013.

Centrelink adjusts the maximum pension payment twice a year- in both March and September, to ensure payments to those in need are at the standard of rising costs.

From 20 March 2022, Port Stephens residents on the Age Pension, Disability Support Pension and Carer Pension will see a 2.1 percent raise, resulting in a $20.10 boost per fortnight for singles and $30.20 a fortnight for couples, bringing the total payments to $987.60 and $1,488.80 respectively.

In addition to this boost, Centrelink has also adjusted the thresholds for assets tests.

For singles, the threshold has increased by $6,750 to $599,750 for homeowners and $816,250 for non-homeowners.

For couples (combined), there has been a threshold increase by $10,000 to $901,500 for homeowners and $1,118,000 for non-homeowners.

As reported by the Australian Bureau of Statistics in 2021, Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest had the oldest median age of residents in Australia, with 63.4 years.

Liberal Candidate for Paterson, Brooke Vitnell told News Of The Area that this increase will deliver the largest raise in a decade.

“Cost of living pressures are real and the

"This is putting money in the pockets of all Australians who rely on our social security system and, in particular, older Australians.

"This increase ensures the rate of the age pension maintains senior Australians’ purchasing power in the economy," Ms Vitnell added.

Although approximately five million Australians who access these payments will receive a rise, Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese has labelled this increase as a spin.

“This government is so out of touch that they’re prepared to spin out there saying how well pensioners are going to be off,” Albanese told reporters.

“When they get to the supermarket to buy products, they find that everything has gone up.

“The rise in the pension will not keep up with the costs of living.

“Pensioners are doing it really tough at the moment.”

Others who will receive a boost to their payments include Jobseekers, those on rent assistance and Australians who benefit from the parenting payment.

Singles without children receiving Jobseeker will receive a fortnightly payment of $629.50, an increase of $13.20.

The parenting payment single will jump by $18.10 to $874.10, including the pension and energy supplements.

By Tara CAMPBELL TILLIGERRY local Kate Vine has been selected to take part in the Tennis NSW Future Leaders program.

The Future Leaders program is designed to empower and engage young people in volunteering and community leadership by supporting participants in the delivery of a fifteen-hour tennis project in collaboration with their tennis club, coach or community organisation.

Kate is a Year 10 student who is excited to have been selected for the program and will be hosting a free open day at Tilligerry Tennis Club on Sunday 3 April.

It is her first time planning an event, however Kate has always had a passion for sports, beginning soccer at a young age and picking up tennis with the Tilligerry Tennis Club just over three years ago.

“I found the program in December on Facebook and decided it would be a great thing to apply for,” Kate told News Of The Area.

Kate attends lessons with the Tilligerry Tennis Club and is hoping to increase participation with locals through the event.
