By Marian SAMPSON AFTER a lengthy stay in care and an amputation, green sea turtle 'Rafiki' was released into the waters of Port Stephens at Fly Point on Nelson Bay Beach last week.

Rafiki was not released back where he was found on the Central Coast as a decision was made to release the turtle into an area with an ample food source available.

Rafiki lost his front flipper due to a fishing line injury, and has now been released here in paradise, where there is a marine sanctuary.

The rescue and care of Rafiki was a real team effort with Hunter Wildlife Rescue, the Small Animal Hospital at Tuggerah, Australian Seabird and Turtle Rescue Central Coast and Sea Shelter all involved in seeing him through the ordeal.

Rafiki was rescued in September from Eraring after being accidentally hooked by a lure.

Instead of cutting the line, which could have potentially caused a painful death, Rafiki was brought to shore and help was called.

The Australian Seabird and Turtle Rescue Central Coast rescued Rafiki - who had sustained quite substantial damage to the front flipper.

The team at the Small Animal Specialist Hospital (SASH) at

on the Central Coast until the wound healed and until Rafiki had learnt to adapt with a missing flipper.

Rafiki was transferred to a bigger tank at Sea Shelter which is located within Irukandji Shark and Ray Encounters at Anna Bay in Port Stephens, where he spent another two months building up fitness.

After five months of rehab Rafiki was deemed fit enough to be released.

Watched by residents from Regis Aged Care Home, the teams from Sea Shelter and the Australian Seabird and Turtle Rescue said farewell to Rafiki when he was released at Nelson Bay, in a habitat that the care team deemed very suitable due to calm conditions, plenty of seagrass and the area being part of a large marine sanctuary.

Robert Olive of the Australian Seabird and Turtle Rescue Central Coast told News Of The Area, “Once Rafiki was well enough we transferred him to Sea Shelter as they have bigger tanks and a bigger facility which allowed Rafiki to build up some muscle.

“Fishing line injuries are common in turtles and there have been even more recreational fishers since COVID and it is important for fishers to take all their tangles home.

“Line wraps around the seaweed and the turtles eat it,” he said.

Just a week after Rafiki’s release, another turtle has been rescued at Nelson Bay which is now in care at Sea Shelter.

Emergency Services Update IT’S time for your weekly emergency services update.

False Alarm Three fire trucks were dispatched from Raymond Terrace Fire & Rescue, Fire and Rescue Tarro and Raymond Terrace Rural Fire Brigade to Windsor Street on 16 February 2022.

These trucks were dispatched for what ended up being a malicious fire alarm, called in by someone claiming that a house was on fire.

The false alarm charge in NSW is $1,600, however, a false alarm diverts Fire and Rescue resources that would otherwise be available for genuine emergencies.

Salamander Bay Training As part of Fire and Rescue NSW Salamander Bay’s training and professional development, they have been undertaking joint exercises with other brigades.

This week, the station set up a ‘span line’ which is used when a movement of an injured patient from point to point is required.

This method is used only when brigade members are

unable to be safely extricated using other members.

Rest In Peace NSW RFS Tilligerry Brigade wishes to say farewell to one of its members - Alexander ‘Scotty’ Hamilton.

Scotty joined the NSW Rural Fire service in 2010 as a Volunteer with Lemon Tree Passage Rural Fire Brigade.

Working alongside his fellow volunteers to serve our community of the Tilligerry Peninsula.

Scott served as a Deputy Captain from 2015 to 2020 with the then newly formed Tilligerry Rural Fire Brigade upon the amalgamation of Lemon Tree Passage Brigade and Tanilba Bay/ Mallabulla Brigade.

He Served from 2012 to 2020 as Brigade secretary for both Lemon Tree Passage Brigade and the new Tilligerry Brigade and received the Port Stephens Council Medallion for his role in the 2013 Section 44 Fire at Heatherbrae.

A valued member of the Rural Fire Service family, he recently was awarded his RFS Long Service Medal.

SES Port Stephens Flood Boat Maintenance Members from the NSW SES Port Stephens Unit have been out and about this

week, conducting essential Flood Boat maintenance and checks.

Although there is no current flooding in our area, it is imperative that Flood Boats and Operators are kept ready to always go.

Flood Boats are not only used during flooding events to rescue people from flood water, transport isolated people and transport essential food /supplies and to conduct reconnaissance activities (such as checking water levels, surges, river conditions and more), but are also used during non-flooding events.

RBT/ RDT Testing in Williamtown On 18 February 2022, Port Stephens Hunter Police District conducted over 100 random breath tests and random drug tests in Williamtown.

The district is happy to report that no positives were detected.

RBT/ RDT testing is one of the ways the district is committing to road safety in 2022.

Domestic Assault At approximately 7:20pm on 12 February, Police responded to a report of a domestic assault in Raymond Terrace.

When they arrived, the offender became physically and verbally aggressive towards police threatening to assault them.

Police tried to de-escalate the situation by speaking to the offender, but the offender lunged at police causing them to deploy a taser.

The offender was arrested and taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station, where Ambulance Officers treated them for minor injuries.

The Offender was charged with a number of DV offences, assault/resist Police offences and possession of drugs.

Intoxicated Fight

THE finishing touches have been added to the new Foreshore Drive bridge at Corlette, marking the project’s completion on time and under budget.

The InQuick bridge replaces the culvert that was washed away during the severe rain event in March 2021.

Port Stephens Council Facilities and Services Manager Greg Kable said crews have spent the past month installing the guardrail, line marking and finalising landscaping on site.

“As promised, we opened the new bridge to traffic before Christmas, and our

crews have put the finishing touches in place, completing the job to the highest possible standard,” Mr Kable said.

“The locally manufactured InQuick bridge creates a bigger channel for flood water to pass through and was able to be installed with minimal disruption to the environment.

“In total, 400 tonnes of road base was used to lift the road to meet the new bridge height, while more than 560 tonnes of rock was added to either side of the bridge to prevent erosion.

“A 2.3 metre footpath on the downstream side of the bridge also allows for safe

access by pedestrians and cyclists.”

Just past midnight on Sunday 13 February, two adult males started fighting after one of the males was ejected from a licensed premise in Shoal Bay for intoxication.

The males were separated by security. Police, who were patrolling in the area, attended almost immediately.

Police spoke to one of the males, while the other

male ran away.

Police chased and stopped the second male and obtained his details.

Police collected CCTV of the incident and are taking action against the males in the near future.

Clean Air Strategy launched

BUSHFIRES, vehicle emission and energy production and use as well as industry are all impacting the quality of the air we breathe.

Locally, the stockpiles of coal on Kooragang Island can impact the quality of air.

The NSW Government has now released its Clean Air Strategy 2021-30, aimed at improving air quality, reducing air emissions and protecting communities.

Environment Minister James Griffin said the Strategy presents a wholeof-Government approach to improve air quality and health for people who live and work in cities and regions across NSW. “Thanks to our comprehensive air quality monitoring network

which includes 90 stations across the State, the NSW Government is committed to actively managing and reducing air pollution in NSW,” Mr Griffin said.

“Through our extensive monitoring network, robust regulatory and policy framework, we have achieved substantial air quality improvements over recent decades and, as a result, our State enjoys some of the best air quality in the world,” he said.

“The 2019-20 summer bushfires demonstrated how important clean air is for our health, and there is still work to be done to ensure communities across NSW are better protected from air pollution and breathing the cleanest air possible.

“The NSW Clean Air Strategy sets out the five

priority areas where the biggest gains can be made: better preparedness for pollution events, cleaner industry, cleaner transport, engines and fuels, healthier homes and better places.”

The Strategy builds on key NSW Government initiatives such as the Net Zero Plan, NSW Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap, NSW Electric Vehicles Strategy and the NSW Hydrogen Strategy.

The NSW Clean Air Strategy 2021-30 incorporates public submissions on the draft Clean Air Strategy released in March 2021.

“The Strategy is strongly grounded in the health, scientific and economic evidence on where NSW can achieve the greatest benefits.

“I guess what strikes me by reading the council background report is that the completion of the footpath on Tomaree Road is not

scheduled to be completed in the Council Capital Works program until 2029-30 Financial Year.

“I know that I’m new to Council and I’ve got a lot to learn, but I also understand that the Shoal Bay community does consist of a lot of elderly people who are wheelchair users and a lot of school kids who are riding their bikes to the Shoal Bay school,” Cr Anderson said.

At the current point in time, these residents have to use the road to travel where there is no provided footpath.

A GARAGE exploded in flames and set fire to an adjoining house on the morning of 19 February 2022 at Corlette.

Members from Fire and Rescue NSW Salamander Bay Fire Station responded to a call just before 3:30AM on Saturday 19 February, arriving at the Bottlenose Street address to find the residents had escaped the burning home. The owner was awoken by a large bang and discovered the garage alight.

Port Stephens Council Meeting Update

A NUMBER of issues have been raised at the Port Stephens Council meeting on 8 February 2022.

Boomerang Park BBQs In a notice moved by Councillor Giacomo Arnott and supported by Councillor Peter Francis, it was passed that the General Manager would prepare a report on whether BBQ facilities are adequately provided in Boomerang Park, and to identify opportunities to increase quality BBQ facilities for public use.

Stephens Council Assets Section Manager, reported that the existing barbeque facility in Boomerang Park is classed as being in “very poor condition and in need of relocation and upgrade”.

“Based on other asset rehabilitation and replacement priorities, this item is not currently listed within Council’s ten-year Capital Works Program,” Mr Marcetich said.

The motion was passed.

Illegal Dumping The issue of illegal dumping in Port Stephens was raised by Councillor Giacomo Arnott and supported by

Councillor Matthew Bailey, noting that illegal dumping is a major problem in Port Stephens’ remote, forested areas close to residential parts of the region.

The motion was passed, asking the General Manager to prepare a report outlining whether lowering the costs of attending the tip would reduce illegal dumping.

Port Stephens Council Development and Compliance Section Manager Kate Drinian reported that Council is aware of illegal dumping and has undertaken a large body of work to reduce these incidents.

“Through investigations into illegal dumping, the cost of tip fees is generally not what influences the offender, rather it is more about behaviour and convenience.

“Any reduction in tip fees would impact upon the Council's budget,” Ms Drinian said.

Iris Moore Reserve Iris Moore Reserve will soon receive a replacement plaque after several years of the plaque being missing.

Through a motion raised

by Councillor Giacomo Arnott and seconded by Councillor Leah Anderson, Port Stephens Council will acknowledge that

there is ordinarily a plaque noting and acknowledging the Moore Family at Iris Moore Reserve, Anna Bay, however, for several years the plaque has been missing.

The General Manager will now approach the National Parks and Wildlife Service to replace the plaque and provide information on their maintenance schedule going forward.

Mayoral Diary In a matter to improve accountability and transparency, the Port Stephens Council will now publish a Mayor of Port Stephens diary, with

Newcastle Airport named on Bonza’s inaugural route map BONZA, Australia’s only independent low-cost carrier, together with Newcastle Airport, has announced a historic partnership that will see six new flights each week on two new routes.

The news comes as Bonza reveals its inaugural route map, airport bases, head office location and all-digital approach.

From mid 2022, subject to regulatory approval, Bonza will operate four flights per week from Newcastle to the Sunshine Coast and twice weekly to the Whitsundays Coast - an entirely new route.

Newcastle Airport CEO Dr Peter Cock said the announcement was an exciting one.

“This is a real coup for our region - Bonza’s vision to connect Australians aligns with Newcastle Airport’s vision to be the airport the region deserves, directly connecting our region to all the places they would like to

travel both domestically and internationally.

“Australians are exploring their own country now more than ever, and there’s a great opportunity for us to help connect our beautiful region with the rest of Australia.

“Today’s announcement plays a big role here as passengers can now travel with lower stress and lower cost.”

In October last year, Bonza announced it was taking to Australian skies and promised not to fly the golden triangle between Australia’s three largest cities.

Swanson claims Government aren’t serious about saving koalas

FEDERAL Member for Paterson Meryl Swanson has expressed her anger at the Morrison Government’s recent koala announcement.

The Morrison Government has recently announced an investment of $50 million to boost the long-term protection and recovery efforts for Australia’s koalas.

However, not everyone

is impressed with this announcement, believing that it is not a real effort towards koala protection and rather, a political move approaching the upcoming federal election.

“This announcement is a shameful grab for votes that will do nothing to protect the vulnerable species.

“Environment Minister Sussan Ley’s recent visit to Oakvale Wildlife Park was nothing more than a photo

opportunity,” Ms Swanson said.

The Minister gave no guarantees that any funds would come to Port Stephens koala care and conservation groups.

“Minister Ley also did not guarantee to reject projects like the Brandy Hill Quarry, which she approved in 2020, that wiped out 52 hectares of koala habitat,” Ms Swanson said.

Koala populations have declined by 50 percent in the last twenty years, and by

30 percent between 2018 and 2021 due to the deadly bushfires.

“Land clearing is the biggest threat to the koala, which could be extinct in NSW by 2050 unless immediate action is taken.

“This government has allowed thousands of hectares of koala habitat to be lost to projects such as Brandy Hill Quarry.

“The Government has not even managed to replace the National Koala Conservation and Management Strategy, which ended in 2014,” Ms

Safeguarding impounded animals

LAST week a historical Bill has passed in NSW Legislative Assembly legislating that that councils must take certain steps towards rehoming a seized or surrendered animal before euthanizing the animal, including working with rehoming organisations.

This is a large first step towards safeguarding the lives of impounded animals across the state.

The Companion Animals Amendment (Rehoming Animals) Bill 2021 now includes a number of reforms to ensure that local Councils are held accountable in taking steps to rehome surrendered animals.

160 Years Of Worship

The church was consecrated on 25 November 1862.

However this wasn’t the location of the first church service in Raymond Terrace as previous services were conducted at The Junction Inn in 1839.

The original Rectory was built in 1842 and there is also a stone cottage on the site which is believed to have been built to house the church's schoolmaster.

The Rectory was sold in 2012 and is now owned by Raymond Terrace Bowling Club.

There was also a community hall on the site however this was demolished after the 1989 earthquake.

hub which hosted Sunday School, meetings and Debutante Balls.

St Johns will be holding several events this year to celebrate its 160th

“I was pleased to secure a $50,000 grant for the Karuah Local Aboriginal Land Council to improve their ageing community hall, and a $43,000 grant for the Tilligerry Rural Fire Service to install a large electronic sign for important community safety and warning messages,” Kate Washington MP said.

Tennis clubs have also been served with funding, with both Hinton and Soldiers Point tennis clubs receiving funds for court upgrades.

Port Stephens’ youngest community members will also see new projects, with pre-

schools in Anna Bay, Raymond Terrace and Medowie receiving funding.

Community connection is a key theme of successful projects.

Once delivered, these projects will assist in bringing the community together after months of social distancing and cancelled events.

As one of the members of the assessment panel for this grant program, Kate Washington MP highlighted the importance of funding being delivered to all parts of the electorate.

“When I’m involved in a grants program like

this one, I make sure funding opportunities are awarded fairly, which means this funding will reach organisations from Tea Gardens to Tilligerry, from Hinton to Anna Bay,” Ms Washington said.

LIFELINE is encouraging people who have made a suicide attempt and their families to gain support to recover through its Eclipse support groups starting this month.

Lifeline Hunter Central Coast CEO Rob Sams said Eclipse is a confidential, eightweek online support program that gives suicide attempt survivors a safe and nonjudgemental place to talk to

one another and learn skills to help them to cope with thoughts of suicide.

He said participants meet for two hours once a week.

The groups are run by Lifeline facilitators, trained in suicide prevention.

Mr Sams said as Eclipse is online, support is accessible to people across the Hunter and Central Coast without the need to travel to a regional centre.

He said participants all

start at the same time and complete the eight weeks together, making it more comfortable to share personal information.

Eclipse is a component of the AfterCare pilot program funded by the Hunter New England and Central Coast Primary Health Network.

“A suicide attempt is one of the most significant risk factors for further suicide attempts,” Mr Sams said.

“Improving the care for people after a suicide attempt, whether it be recent or an attempt in the past, helps to

reducing suicide attempts and suicide deaths,” he said.

“Reducing suicide attempts also reduces the impacts on loved ones, friends, first responders and the health service.”

People do not need a referral to join an Eclipse support group.

The next Eclipse groups start on February 28 and March 3.

SMALL businesses in the Hunter that experienced a downturn over summer can now apply for a NSW Government support payment of up to $5,000 per week through Service NSW. Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin said the Small Business Support Program will provide cashflow assistance to help local businesses get through the current COVID-19 outbreak and keep workers

employed.

"Over the summer, Omicron meant many people chose to stay at home, which hit many small businesses in the community hard, especially in the hospitality and tourism sectors," Mr Martin said.

"Our Small Business Support Program is about making sure businesses that are viable over the medium and long term get through Omicron in good shape so we

can bounce back better as case numbers fall.”

Mr Martin said the Service NSW Business Concierge team and grant assessors are standing by ready to assist customers with applications and get financial support into the hands of business owners.

“The majority of customers submitting complete and eligible applications can expect to receive payment within five to ten business days of approval of their

application,” Mr Martin said.

Mr Martin said the program was part of a suite of responses to the Omicron wave and was designed to help the businesses in greatest need.

“The program will provide targeted support to businesses with an annual turnover of between $75,000 and $50 million that experienced a decline in turnover of at least 40 percent in January 2022 and the start of February

A REPORT into the viability of installing a basketball backboard and rings on the present croquet court facility in Boomerang Park has been passed through a notice of

SWIMMING for Australian kids is an essential skill.

Backyard pools, beaches and rivers are all dangerous for children who do not know how to swim.

The Royal Life Saving Society tells us, “Worldwide, children under five remain the age group at highest risk of unintentional fatal drowning.

“This is also true in Australia, where, over the past 25 years, a total of 965 children under the age of five have died from drowning.”

Now parents can tap into the government's First Lap Program.

Children aged 3-6 years who are not yet enrolled in school and kindergarten children who missed out on swimming lessons due to the

After Covid virtually crippled the movie theatre industry, the Federal Government has stepped in to support local cinemas.

Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts, the Hon Paul Fletcher MP, said a total of 125 independent cinemas across

the country would receive a share of $7.3 million from the latest round of SCREEN Fund grants to support their resurgence from Covid-19 disruption.

“Independent cinemas are a vital component of Australia’s economic, social and cultural wellbeing, which is why we continue to provide one-off business continuity grants to support the cinemas resurgence from prolonged closures

Christmas Bush Garden Club 40th Birthday

IT was a very special celebration for local garden lovers when the garden club named after the locally endemic Christmas Bush plant, symbolic around Nelson Bay, celebrated its 40th birthday on Tuesday 15 February with a luncheon at Soldiers Point Bowling Club.

Peg McGeachie (deceased) founded the Club in 1982 when there were two other garden clubs in the area.

Amidst the challenges of the Covid outbreak, 48 members ventured out and

thoroughly enjoyed the party.

Of course the tables were decorated with pink flowers galore which had been so capably arranged by long standing Club member Kathy Mead.

The Christmas Bush Garden Club was fortunate to have as guest speaker Sandra Ross, a horticulturalist, garden writer, broadcaster and Director/Tour Leader for Ross Garden Tours.

Sandra presented colourful slides of gardens and flowers and passed on some handy tips.

Sandra travelled from

Sydney for the occasion as did the National President for Garden Clubs of Australia, Lori Emerson.

A special medallion presentation was made by the National President to popular and hard working member Jan McCafferty, recognizing her outstanding contribution to the Club since she joined in 2010.

A foundation member and still a member today, Shirley Souter was honoured and took part in cutting the cake with past presidents of the Club.

Kathy Mead decorated the

cake.

She also gave an interesting and abbreviated history of the Club over the years.

“The Club’s motto is Friendship through Gardening with a focus on meeting to share outings to gardens and exchanging gardening ideas,” said Margaret Wilkinson, Club Secretary and organiser of the event.

Wrong plan for our roads OPINION DEAR News Of The Area,

I RECEIVED in my letterbox a brochure (otherwise known as junk mail) from Kate Washington MP, but in this junk mail is an article about the new upgrade of Port Stephens Road from Cabbage Tree Road to Bobs Farm.

This would be one of the worst road plans I have ever come across in my past 50 years.

First of all, the new road is to go through wetlands and sand dunes which will need excavation, heavy matting, rock base, and a lot of road base (compacted) then topped with hot mix tar.

This road would be blasted with sand every time the winds come from the east, south and north.

The sand moves every year and could even cover the road in parts and could cause car accidents.

All this will cost at least five times more than widening the existing Nelson Bay Road.

The roundabout at the start of Lavis Lane is not wide enough to take a four lane road between McDonald's and the service station.

Nelson Bay road is already there.

It needs to be widened to cater for an

ORGANISERS are expecting tens of thousands of women and allies to participate in Women’s March4Justice events across Australia, to be held on February 27.

As Women’s March4Justice prepare to take to the streets again, they are demanding that the next Federal Government lead a review of sexual assault laws, secure increased funding for domestic violence, and introduce a national Gender Equality Act. Organisers are hoping to build on the historic action taken last year, when marches across the nation were sparked amid news of systemic sexual assault and harassment at Parliament House, including Brittany Higgins’ alleged rape.

“Last year’s march was a catalyst for women and their allies to pull together and get organised,” said March4Justice founder Janine Hendry.

“This year, on the anniversary of that historic march, women are asking what’s improved?

“What’s changed for the better?

“They will be taking these questions with them to the ballot box.”

Bronwyn Currie, Melbourne event organiser said, "This federal election women will not be smiling and asking for change - we will be in the streets and online demanding reform to end gendered violence, deliver real justice, and secure safety at work.

The new section of the Pacific Highway from Black Hill to Raymond Terrace will bypass Cabbage Tree Road and all the traffic from Sydney will go though Raymond Terrace, the same as the traffic from the north coast.

If this road is built, the ratepayers and Council of Port Stephens will have to bear the cost of the upkeep of two roads. Newcastle Airport is a major airport and is being expanded.

It needs the road from Fern Bay to Bobs Farm (the existing road) to be upgraded by main roads contractors, not the Council, and maintained by the Council.

The people from Medowie and Lemon Tree Passage need this road.

It's time for the members of State and Federal members of Port Stephens, Kate Washington and Meryl Swanson, to step up for the people of Port Stephens and not for themselves.

I just hope someone takes note and has some common sense.

A friend recently asked me to look after her dog Claudice while she travelled for a month.

She is due back next week, and the dog and I have bonded. I've also taught Claudice some basic obedience including sit and stay, which my friend said she's never been able to achieve.

I think it's in Claudice's best interests if she stays with me. She was formerly an outdoor dog, but now enjoys sleeping in my bed (head on the pillow).

Real action to end gendered violence and promote gender equality across Australia, including: ○ Independent investigations into public entities and public office holders for all cases of gendered violence, with referrals

You can't just dognap Claudice (do you notice how you call this animal by name each time, such is the level of misplaced affection you've developed?).

This is another person's dog, and that person has entrusted you to care for the dog in the manner it has been brought up in, not to develop some sort of weird intimate relationship where you are now sleeping and drooling together on the same pillow!

I suggest you start tonight with a bed in the laundry (just for the dog, in case you have visions of both of you in there). If you need some four-legged company, you will need to get your own pet. Raymond Terrace has a domestic violence rate of 1,092 assaults per 100,000 people, nearly three times the state average.

Ann Fletcher of Port Stephens Family and Neighbourhood Services told News Of The Area, “For anyone that believes they are in danger they must contact the police.”

NELSON Bay Croquet Club has continued social play throughout the summer months, but many members are away or avoid the hot weather and playing numbers only start to increase again in February each year.

To mark the return, Club Captain Rae Uptin organised a coaching session for members with a Golf Croquet handicap of 14 and above on Sunday 13 February 2022.

18 members turned-up on a sunny Sunday afternoon to take part in the coaching session.

was in attendance, but his participation was restricted due to a broken bone in his foot - Peter Gordon ably stood-in to

run drills aimed at improving croquet skills and playing tactics.

This basic approach has delivered a program judged as a great success and enjoyed by all involved in the inaugural season during the latter part of 2021.

Inaugural 2021 participants Jennifer Maher and Anne Marie Barrett have strongly endorsed the program to potential recruits.

Jennifer and Anne Marie enthusiastically described Bay Buddies as “friendly, informative and a lot of fun, a program where friends have been made and many a social

game of golf enjoyed”.

Both Jennifer and Anne Marie are now competition players with a ready group of friends to call upon for practice or social games.

Bay Buddies is conducted in conjunction with weekly skills clinics presented by club professional Warren Moses.

In addition to the coaching aspect, the program offers nine holes of mentored golf for new players each Monday and Wednesday afternoon.

Groups of three novice golfers are accompanied by an experienced golfer

with a simple “learn-asyou-go” approach applied to understanding the rules and etiquette of the game.

Bay Buddies welcomes new members and club membership is not a prerequisite.

Prospective members are encouraged to undertake professional tuition in conjunction with participation in the program.

It’s a sport that many of us put off until retirement but there is no need for those living in Port Stephens to put off learning golf any longer as there is a new program at Nelson Bay Golf Course to assist budding golfers to feel confident as they take to the course.

The Nelson Bay Golf Club Bay Buddies is a program for potential golfers which features mentored matches at the picturesque Nelson Bay Golf Course.

The key objective of the Bay Buddies initiative is to prepare new players for competition golf, or the level of golf they choose, through development of basic skills and understanding of the etiquette and rules of golf.

The program recognises that whilst golf is a sport of great tradition and challenge, it is sometimes daunting to the uninitiated.

The ethos of Bay Buddies is that golf should always be played in a friendly atmosphere and strives to deliver this message - the main aim of a q Cody and Zane - they each won six medals over the weekend, an amazing effort.

THE third Round of the Midsummer two Bowl Pairs was played on Thursday night 17 February.

This Competition is played over four Thursdays nights by teams of pairs using two bowls and playing two sets of eleven ends.

Points are scored with two points for a set win and two points for an overall win, a draw is worth one point.

On the fourth night the top four

teams play a Semi-Final and Final to determine the winners.

After Round three the four leading teams were, with 15 points and Skippered by Mike Smith, 2nd with 14 points was Richard Hadley, 3rd also on 14 points was Dave Phillips and 4th also on 14 points was Ric Clark.

FOURTEEN Raymond Terrace Athletics Centre athletes recently made their way down the M1 to the Mingara Regional Athletics Centre at Tumbi Umbi on the Central Coast for the Little Athletics Region Championships.

There was a lot of apprehension and excitement among the athletes for the weekend ahead, especially the younger of them as this was the first Little Athletics Competition since 2020.

Usually, the athletes need to compete at Zone Championships in the previous December to qualify for this annual Championship, but thanks to COVID, Zone hasn’t been held since 2019.

So, for the first time ever, athletes from Under 8 to Under 17 were able to nominate their events.

With the Centre only being able to start their Saturday morning competition just one week before their Christmas break and then three weeks after returning for 2022,

the athletes were incredibly unprepared for the quality competition they were to face, but they didn’t let that faze them.

The conditions were wet, stormy, sunny, windy, muddy, sometimes at the same time, yet our athletes handled the challenging conditions in their stride and made new friends along the way.

Over the two and a half day competition featuring over 300 athletes from around the Region, our athletes brought home an impressive total of 28 medals: 15 Gold, 5 Silver and 8 Bronze.

A lot of them also recorded numerous personal best results.

Twelve athletes have qualified to contest the McDonald's State Championships Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 of March, at Sydney Olympic Athletics Centre, Homebush.
