NORM Bakker is a Medowie local who has been in the show business for almost 60 years.
In the late 1980s, Norm brought his Elvis tribute show to life: A Solid Rock Salute to ELVIS, produced by his wife Michelle Day.
The production once consisted of a sixteen piece band, backup singers and the Michelle Day Dancers, however nowadays Norm performs a one man show performing the hits of Tom Jones, Neil Diamond, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash and of course, Elvis Presley. Mr Bakker told News Of The Area, “I Started my career with my two siblings; my sister Marijke and brother John. “We formed a singing trio called The Chantinos performing songs from the Seekers, Peter, Paul and Mary and the Springfields.
“We performed regularly on television shows including Brian Henderson’s ‘Bandstand’ and Johnny O’Keefe’s ‘Sing, Sing, Sing’.
The Chantinos had much success in Australia, Asia, Europe and the United States of America with the seven inch vinyl with ‘Breaking Point’ (side A) ‘Dominique’ (side B) in 1965.
This release, combined with various television performances earned the trio a special place in Australian History.
A Solid Rock Tribute to ELVIS is internationally renowned, with Norm being invited on two occasions to perform at Graceland, the almost fourteen acre estate and mansion once owned by Elvis Presley, now owned by his daughter, Lisa Marie Presley.
He has been met with overwhelming praise and regard everywhere he has travelled, with many international Elvis fans loving Norm’s Australian accent and take on the work.
Norm will be performing for the first time at the new Medowie Social/ Bowling Club on Friday 21 May from 7:00pm.
Bookings are essential on 4981 8474.
If a plan B-shuttle bus service is required, contact Trevor on 0475 474 474.

FOR some residents of NSW the mail is delivered a little differently.
We are not talking about a drone drop; what we are talking about is a ferry service.
For those living on the Hawkesbury River there is a tradition that sees the mail delivered by the Riverboat Mailman.
On the mighty Hawkesbury River, 60 members of the Probus Club of Port Stephens, led by the lovely Fran Wathen, made the coach journey to Brooklyn and the Hawkesbury River Station to join the Riverboat Postman cruise, and cover 40 kilometres of the river going as far as Marlow Creek.
David Heath of the Probus Club of Port Stephens told News Of The Area, “On boarding the Riverboat we were served tea, coffee and homemade Anzac biscuits by the very cheerful and energetic crew.
“Out on deck and on top level the views of the river and nature are stunning, and the Captains commentary on the history of the different settlements, and the eventual spanning of the river with a prefabricated steel bridge, was a delve back into the past and the pioneering spirit that stretched across Australia in those days.”
Throughout the journey The Riverboat Postie stopped to deliver mail and goodies to residents that don’t have, and probably don’t want, a road.
“Lunchtime gave way to a very well prepared and very fresh ploughman’s style lunch, prepared and cheerfully served by the crew, with care and attention to gluten and other dietary requirements.
“The bar service throughout was good and at prices that left your wallet with its original thickness.” q Enjoying the cruise.
q The Members of the Probus Club of Port Stephens out on the deck during the Riverboat Mailman cruise on the Hawkesbury River.
The three and a half hour journey covers 40 kilometres of the lower Hawkesbury River, and the very informative and historical details are covered with entertaining commentary by the skipper.
“The journey home to the Bay on our Port Stephens Coaches bus was another wave of information from our skilful driver Mark, and arrival at the coach depot brought a round of applause for the driver and Probus for another enjoyable and interesting day out,” he said.
If you would like to join in the activities and events of The Probus Club of Port Stephens you are more than welcome to join the Club.

Social Inaugural Bowls Gala

By Louise CLEMENTS
SUNSHINE, breeze, bowlers and a BBQ were the perfect ingredients for our inaugural Medowie Social Bowls Gala. We had a fantastic turnout with 24 bowlers coming from as close as Tea Gardens while others from Mornington Peninsula in Victoria came to enjoy a day of fun and a little competition.
We had two very close games on the day with the first being Bev and Warwick Lowe scraping home against Joanne and David Boucher 15/14 and our second between Adam Clements and Gary Higgs nudging out Jason Price and John Hall 15/14 after an extra end to determine the winner.
I can’t write this report without mentioning one of our funny moments throughout the day, with two of our players pausing for the “smooch” on the change over.
I think this might have been a tactic to put the opponents off but sadly it wasn’t effective and they lost by just one shot.
As we all know it wouldn’t be a game of bowls if we didn’t have “the wrong bias” bowled.
I promised not to mention names; this time; but the gold coin donation was very quickly handed over.
Our prize winners on the day were A. Clements and G. Higgs for the winning rink and M and J Ware for the runners-up rink.
Our “play of the day” winner was J. Taylor from Maitland City Bowling Club for his amazing bowling skills displayed throughout the game.
Thank you to Charlie Way for the generous donation of prizes.
I must also thank every bowler who came to enjoy a great day of bowls and for their sportsmanship throughout the game.
We must also give a big thank you to John Bilby for his tireless efforts with the preparation of the green for the day and also his bbq skills when it came to feeding our bowlers after the game. We are very excited to announce that our Social Gala Day will be held on the last Sunday of every month commencing June 27.
You can join us by simply phoning the office on 49818 474 or email your details to bowls@medowiesocial. com.au. We are very much looking forward to seeing you all there.
Unfortunately we have limited numbers so be sure to get your names in.

The Double Vampire Tragedy
By Geoff WALKER
ALL seemed calm and serene on the morning of Sunday May 14 in 1951 near Karuah as Tanilba's Faylie Cook and her father fished from their boat.
Suddenly, a Vampire jet dived from the sky above and crashed into the water.
So close was the impact that waves from the site actually rocked the boat.
A few seconds later another Vampire, although apparently trying to pull out of a dive, crashed into the tidal zone not far away.
Both pilots were killed.
Vampires were the first jet aircraft to serve with both the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) and the Royal Australian Navy (RAN).
They were manufactured by De Havilland at their works in Bankstown, Sydney.
On the fateful day, two pairs of Vampires were engaged in cine-gun quarter attack training.
The filmed attacks would be later analysed back at RAAF Williamtown to see just how effective their efforts had been.
Each duo consisted of a qualified Vampire pilot and a trainee who was doing a conversion course from propeller powered Mustang fighters.
One of the trainee pilots reported that he was in a condition known as 'compressibility.'
This occurred when the jet went too fast and nose dived.
His leader instructed him to fare his dive brakes and throttle back.
It was of no use and he crashed into the water after a short and panicked radio message.
Meanwhile, hearing this drama unfold on the radio, the leader of the other two directed his student to regain formation.
This he tried to do but mistakenly followed the stricken aircraft believing that it was his leader.
He realized his situation too late and despite trying to recover from the dive, crashed into the mud flats at low water.
Vampires served with the RAAF between 1949 and 1960 and were produced as both a single seat fighter and a two seat trainer.
