THE revitalisation of the Shoal Bay foreshore has certainly made more seating available in shaded areas.

Sadly, some people with little vision for the space and a lack of regard for public property have taken it upon themselves to poison the newly planted trees.

Shade trees are planted to create positive spaces for families and reduce temperatures on the grassed areas and assist in the reduction of coastal erosion.

Trees also provide habitat for our wildlife and if Port Stephens is to remain ‘incredible by nature’ we need to enhance the environment for all species that are endemic to the region.

Port Stephens Council announce Federal election priorities

Williamtown Special Activation Precinct, town centre revitalisation, better connections, upgrades to Newcastle Airport Terminal, creating a sustainable future and sport and recreation infrastructure.

The Council is seeking funding to implement foreshore revitalisation including $250,000 for a business case and concept design for the Nelson Bay commercial tour operator wharf, visitors centre and foreshore upgrade, $150,000 for the Development of a Port Stephens Waterways Strategy to deliver economic, tourism and environmental outcomes, $600,000 for minor stabilisation works at Shoal Bay and Corlette to reduce coastal erosion and $1.6 million of co-funding to support construction of a new Marine Rescue Facility at Lemon Tree Passage.

In addition, commitment to funding the

highway interchange and drainage channel at Kings Hill to catalyse housing development is requested.

Council is also advocating for all levels of government to resolve long term drainage issues to alleviate land use constraints to unlock development in Williamtown, whilst aligning all levels of government to facilitate future development through streamlined planning and investment attraction.

For revitalisation of town centres, $2.3 million in funding for planning and concept design of Medowie Town Centre and District Playground, $15-plus million in funding to deliver package of works for the Raymond Terrace Public Domain Plan and $5 million to deliver package of works for the Nelson Bay Public Domain Plan is requested.

A number of upgrades for roads and motorways are also addressed in the Federal

advocacy document with several high priority pathways addressed.

Other priorities include a Code R runway at Williamtown, assistance in becoming a carbon neutral Council by 2025 and funding for sporting and multipurpose centres are included.

Mayor Ryan Palmer said that as Port Stephens prepares for the future and potential growth, it is important that the region is equipped to meet the needs of the community for many years to come.

“Our Council calls on all levels of government to partner with us and drive these major initiatives that will shape the future of Port Stephens for years to come.

“Our community is like no other and we are seeking policy commitments from the government to ensure the focus on our community is at the forefront of their future planning,” he said.

Sexism and Vilification Through Federal Election Campaign

THROUGHOUT her Federal Election campaign, Liberal candidate for Paterson Brooke Vitnell has had signage stolen and graffitied with abusive messages, and experienced ongoing attacks from trolls online.

Vitnell’s appearance has been the target for much of the vitriol.

“Traditionally when there is a woman in there they sexualise us with labels like the Liberal barbie - and that is not okay,” Ms Vitnell said.

“It is not okay to rip apart a woman on how she looks - talk about policy - the time

for talking about women’s appearances is done.

“What is really upsetting is the online trolling, that has been foul.”

Ms Vitnell holds concerns that her experiences will deter other women from entering politics, having been greeted with comments such as “Show us your t**s, don’t talk to me about policy”.

“What I am most concerned about is there are young people coming to me at pre-polling and they have said I will never ever consider a career in politics because of what has happened to you.

“It is unbelievable…representatives at pre-polling are even concerned about their

safety.

Ms Vitnell said she had 800 campaign signs go missing from the community.

“Those that they could not rip down were graffitied with genitalia and emblazoned with the word ‘sl*t’,” she said.

“We need more women in there fighting for the issues which are important to women, issues like child care, but we won't get representation if women are going to be vilified.

Brooke is due to appear on A Current Affair where she will be speaking about young women in politics.

Port Stephens Trees Poisoned in Public Foreshore Precincts FROM Page 1 along Shoal Bay Road during upgrades in October 2021 are now facing removal after they were deliberately poisoned.

“The destruction of public trees is a selfish act that has lasting impacts on the wider community, public amenity and most importantly the local environment,” Mr Palmer said.

“The Shoal Bay community is shocked and upset by the vandalism of these young trees.

“These red gums were planted as part of a broader landscape plan with the vision of creating a visually appealing, shaded area, by the water for all to enjoy.

“Vandals who poison community trees disrespect everyone in the wider community who value our natural environment,” he added.

Council staff received reports from the community that the trees were in ill health and follow up soil testing confirmed that the trees had been poisoned using a Tricolpyr-based poison.

Council’s Group Manager, Development Services, Steven Peart, said that in the past, trees across Port Stephens have been poisoned in a bid to create or retain views.

“Trees in public spaces are an important part of the Shoal Bay foreshore creating shade, helping to moderate

high temperatures, creating habitat for birdlife and storing carbon,” Mr Peart said.

“Council is committed to replacing the poisoned trees and will work with the community to do so,” he added.

In line with Council's Tree Vandalism Policy, signage will be installed at the site and residents will be notified in writing with a request for anyone with any additional information to come forward.

Individuals who’ve been found to vandalise trees can be fined up to $3,000 through a Council issued infringement notice or taken to court for further prosecution.

President of the Shoal Bay Community Association,

Chris Bastic, says the poisoning of trees is a bold and deliberate act that the community can help prevent.

“We urge the Shoal Bay community to work together and report any information to Council to prevent further vandalism of our precious trees.

“Trees are for everyone to enjoy, not for people to selfishly poison for their own benefit,” said Mr Bastic.

While locals speculate on who vandalised the trees, the space is not alone on the foreshore of Port Stephens as an area where newly planted trees have been vandalised.

Recently planted trees in the parklands adjacent to Dutchies Beach have also been poisoned.

Controversy over New Mayoral Vehicle

IN the recent Port Stephens Council meeting on 10 May 2022, Councillors were reviewing the Quarterly Budget when an expense of $86,000 for a mayoral vehicle was identified, leaving some Councillors frustrated.

An $86,000 2022 Ford Ranger Raptor, purchased at a Port Macquarie dealer, was noted as an expense for a mayoral vehicle as part of the Port Stephens Council fleet.

Council policies entitle the Mayor to a vehicle funded by the ratepayers and the Mayor is given full discretion as to which vehicle is selected.

Port Stephens Councillor Giacomo Arnott says the car was not an efficient choice given Council’s current financial status.

“Council is in a financial situation that means we’re holding back on expenditure and not filling staffing vacancies simply to save money.

“The community is already suffering as a result of this financial situation, and the Mayor should read the room

and try to be modest for once.

“The purchase of this extravagant vehicle is an affront to working families who are prioritising bills right now and figuring out how and when to pay their council rate bills,” he said.

Mayor Ryan Palmer however declared that he is

“committed to the long-term sustainability of Council while at the same time ensuring the delivery of outcomes for our community”.

“I’m incredibly disappointed that the purchase of this vehicle has been turned into a political issue.

“I understand the concerns of the community and the perception created, however, this purchase was made in line with the relevant policies and procedures, taking into consideration potential financial implications,” he said.

“Fleet purchases at Port Stephens Council are made in consideration of a whole of life costing.

“The contract amount disclosed in the Council report was GST inclusive, however as

“Based on this current term of Council, the estimated resale price for this particular vehicle is estimated at $63,000. “This represents a capital cost to Council of $4,700 per annum over the three years,” Mayor Palmer said.

However, Councillor Arnott is not impressed and believes action needs to be taken.

“Ryan should be asking Council staff to list this big rig on Carsales where we will be able to sell it for what we paid for it and possibly even more.

“He needs to ask Council staff to pick up a premium vehicle at half the price.

“I’ll be working through a change to the policy to make sure no future Mayor is able to spend so much money on such a ridiculous vehicle ever again,” Cr Arnott said.

A motion was moved in Council to support the sale of the car but was lost five votes to four.

Ampcontrol win Charge On Innovation Challenge

PORT Stephens based Ampcontrol has found success in a global challenge searching for solutions to decarbonise mining operations.

Ampcontrol and Tritium’s (Australia) joint challenge entry was selected as a winner from more than 80 submissions from around the world to the Charge On Innovation Challenge.

In total, eight submissions have been selected to progress.

The global challenge, launched

by BHP, Vale and Rio Tinto, sought to accelerate the commercialisation of effective solutions for charging large electric haul trucks while simultaneously demonstrating there is an emerging market for these solutions in mining.

The eight innovators selected are Ampcontrol and Tritium (Australia), ABB, BluVeinXL, DB Engineering and Consulting with Echion Technologies, Hitachi, Shell Consortium, Siemens Off-board power supply, and 3ME Technology.

The joint submission from Ampcontrol and Tritium (Australia) is an end-to-end mining haul truck battery swap solution that is fully automated, relocatable, scalable, and cell agnostic.

In a drive-in/drive-out recharging station, an autonomous transfer robot swaps batteries in 90 seconds, significantly reducing safety risks and increasing productivity by excluding personnel from the swap process.

On receiving the news of its winning solution, Ampcontrol Managing Director and CEO Rod Henderson said, "Technological breakthroughs are vital to our decarbonisation journey as we work toward zero emissions.

“Collaborative partnerships with organisations such as Tritium are critical to our research and development as they bring together innovative thinkers to deliver safer, cleaner, electrically operated solutions to the mining industry."

Ampcontrol and Tritium worked together to pitch for the challenge to help find a joint solution they believe can change the shape of the mining haul cycle forever.

“We are immensely thrilled to be named as one of the winning solutions in what has been a very comprehensive and competitive worldwide challenge.

“The backing by BHP, Rio Tinto and Vale of our winning solution acknowledges both Ampcontrol and Tritium as pioneers in innovative

The companies worked together with the founding patrons – BHP, Rio Tinto, and Vale – and sixteen other mining companies to accelerate the commercialisation of interoperable solutions that can safely deliver electricity to large battery-electric off-road haul trucks – reducing emissions while enhancing mine productivity.

The Charge On Innovation Challenge was launched in 2021 and invited vendors and technology innovators from around the world and across industries, to collaborate with the mining industry to present novel electric truck charging solutions.

The Challenge received interest from over 350 companies across nineteen industries, with over 80 companies submitting expressions of interest (EOI).

migration of whales as they head north to warmer waters.

Port Stephens is one of the closest places that the whales travel to the land in their 10,000km migration.

The whales have been making appearances for the past couple of weeks, with numbers strengthening.

The region is truly a whale superhighway with plenty of

shore-based whale watching vantage points and of course some great water-based whale watching experiences available.

The first sightings of whales off the NSW east coast have been recorded as the annual migration from Antarctica to warmer northern waters begins.

Minister for Environment James Griffin said the first of about 40,000 humpback whales have started their long swim towards tropical waters.

“The whale migration is one of the longest journeys of any animal species and we are so lucky to be able to witness it right on our doorstep,” Mr Griffin said “We have more than 880 national parks and reserves in NSW, many of which are on the coast and provide excellent

Whales cover about 10,000km during their annual round trip from Antarctic waters, at a migratory speed of about six kilometres per hour.

Most of the whales that travel past the NSW coast are humpback whales, however other whale species include southern right whales, dwarf minke whales, tropical whales and even blue whales.

National Parks and

Wildlife Service marine fauna expert Shona Lorigan said humpback whales are easily recognisable and their behaviours, like breaching and rolling, always put on a show for whale watchers.

The annual migration heads north in May and south through to October each year.

Regulations require all vessels to remain at least 100 metres away from whales, aircraft can fly no closer than 300m, and drones must not be operated closer than 100 metres.

Will using superannuation for home deposits raise prices?

By Marian SAMPSON THE Federal Government has unveiled a plan they believe will support the next generation of home buyers to enter the highly competitive housing market by accessing their superannuation as a deposit.

The policy would allow young people to access $50,000, or 40 percent, of their superannuation to buy their first home.

Brooke Vitnell, the Liberal candidate for Paterson, told News Of The Area, “Under the new Super Home Buyer

Scheme, first home buyers will be able to invest up to 40 percent of their super, up to a maximum of $50,000, to help collect the keys to their first house.

“This will help people achieve their dream of home ownership.

“The scheme will apply to both new and existing homes with the invested amount to be returned to their super fund when the house is sold.

“It’s all part of our plan for a stronger future,” she said.

Member for Paterson Meryl Swanson described the policy as a “last-minute

announcement by a desperate government”.

“Gambling with our superannuation system is a bad idea that will not benefit anyone in the long-run.

“People deserve affordable housing and a decent retirement, and under the Liberals they will have neither.

“It’s not enough that the Liberals attack Medicare, they now want to attack superannuation.

“Scott Morrison has failed to take responsibility for the housing crisis and he’s now trying to pick a political

fight rather than solve the problem.

“Labor has policies to help people buy a home, and to increase the amount of social and affordable housing, which will also help renters.

“Together these policies will do more to alleviate the housing crisis than raiding people’s superannuation.”

The Liberal’s newly announced policy is at odds with Labor’s housing policy, who say they will co-fund 10,000 homes under their Help to Buy policy.

Labor would allow eligible home buyers with a minimum

deposit of two percent, with an equity contribution from the Federal Government of up to a maximum of 40 percent of the purchase price of a new home and up to a maximum of 30 percent of the purchase price for an existing home.

The Australian Institute of Superannuation Trustees (AIST) has raised concerns about the impact on housing prices if the Morrison government’s proposal to allow access to superannuation for first home buyers becomes a reality, as well as undermining of the core purpose of the superannuation system.

Emergency Services Update

Tanilba Bay Fire CREW from the Williamtown/ Salt Ash Rural Fire Brigade were called to a structure fire at Beatty Boulevard in Tanilba Bay on Sunday 15 May. The team worked quickly and extinguished the blaze within three hours, leaving the scene at 12:00PM. Port Stephens SES On 11 May, crews from the Port Stephens SES responded to three separate accidents.

9:00am: A two vehicle incident with multi patient and person trapped on Hinton Road.

9:50am: A single vehicle incident with a person trapped on Nelson Bay Road, Salt Ash. 10:06am: Land search for missing person in Salt Ash. Both vehicle incidents required SES Rescue Operators to utilise hydraulic rescue tools including the spreader (Jaws of Life), cutters and combi tool.

Salt Ash Crash The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was tasked by NSW Ambulance at 9:50am on 11 May to a report of a serious single vehicle motor vehicle accident at Salt Ash, with a car having run into a pole.

NSW Ambulance Paramedics arrived on scene and carried out initial treatment on the 65-year-old male driver, following SES assistance in removing the man from the vehicle.

The man was released from the vehicle suffering lacerations and a broken leg and has been transported by NSW Ambulance Paramedics to JHH in a stable condition with non-life threatening injuries.

Assault Arrest Last month on 5 April, Police from the Port Stephens Hunter Police District attended a routine job at Raymond Terrace.

Subsequent interactions with two males, a 28-yearold male and his brother, turned violent and police will allege both males assaulted police and hindered police in regards to their response.

The 28-year-old allegedly not only assaulted an officer but stole and used the officer’s capsicum spray and avoided apprehension.

Subsequent investigations have located this individual in Queensland.

Warrants were issued for his arrest, and he was arrested last Friday with the assistance of Queensland police.

He was extradited to NSW and put before Tweed Heads Local Court on 9 May where he pled guilty to seven offences and subsequently has been remanded in custody until 29 June 2022.

Operation Protector This week Operation Protector has been launched across New South Wales and will run for three days.

Essentially, all things Domestic Violence related will be the focus of the investigation including AVO compliance checks, checking in with high-risk offenders and ensuring appropriate action is taken with domestic violence.

Farewell Commander Commander Chad Gillies has left the Port Stephens Hunter Police District following two and a half years service as Commander.

Detective Superintendent Wayne Humphrey will be taking over the role.

Detective Superintendent Humphrey has experience in the Port Stephens Hunter Police District both as a Detective as a Relieving Commander as well as a Commissioned Officer.

Marine Rescue On Saturday night, a skipper of a distressed vessel contacted Marine Rescue Port Stephens.

He had hit rocks, was sinking, may have hit his head, may have been knocked out and sounded very confused.

Watch Officer (WO) Lee was able to ascertain that he was somewhere off Shark Island or Fingal Head.

He talked the distressed skipper through activating his emergency position indicating radio beacon (EPIRB) and ensured he had his lifejacket on.

Following proven procedures, WO Lee transmitted a Mayday Relay radio message to alert any vessels in the general area, called the NSW Police Marine Area Command and arranged for a Rescue Vessel crew to be immediately organised.

quickly to search for the distressed vessel while a second Rescue Vessel, Port Stephens 30, stood by and shortly after, transported an Ambulance crew to assist the distressed skipper who was believed to be still aboard his stricken vessel.

Marine Area Command organised the rescue helicopter Westpac 2 to assist in the search.

After a brief search, the distressed skipper, thanks to a flashing EPIRB, was spotted on a beach under Port Stephens Head.

Westpac 2 was now on scene and was able to drop

a medic onto the beach and prepared for a stretcher winch of the distressed skipper.

Port Stephens 31 reported debris in water and recovered a number of large items which may have become a navigation hazard for other vessels if left in the water.

Unfortunately, the hull of the vessel was not seen and is believed to have sunk.

Westpac 2 transported the distressed skipper to John Hunter Hospital and after a further search for debris, both Rescue Vessels returned to their dock.

THE Final of the Club Major Singles was played on Sunday 15 May with Dave Tinsley up against Dick Hadley.

Dave started well and soon held a 13-3 shots advantage, his game then stalled and Dick gradually came back and finally won in convincing fashion by 25 shots to 14.

Dick is a prolific winner of Club Titles and Dave played well to reach the Final claiming some fancied scalps on the way.

Congratulations to both players.

Readers may recall our NDBA Three-Threes 3(2) Grade Side had played their way to the Final which was played at the Hamilton North Club on Wednesday 11 May against the Redhead Club.

Nevertheless, it was a great effort by our players who had played so well to reach the Final.

THE members of the Fingal Bay Probus Club like to be prepared.

When the wine appreciation event which was scheduled for Conroy Park was hit by sudden

darkening clouds it meant a hasty road-cross to the CWA Hall, laden of course with the wines, glasses and necessary nibbles.

Club members were again set upon by rain when a walking for pleasure morning at Shoal Bay was

the order for the day.

Sudden showers meant another hasty walk across the road to Zenith for a welcome coffee and conversation morning!

Julia Redlich was nonplussed by the rain events saying, “Our monthly meeting had no weather worries, and our guest speaker was Bob Mitchell

who entertained us with stories of his world-wide travels, the problems with visas, time-table changes, one-star hotels, health certificates – and being an escort for horses flying to far-flung parts.

“We loved it!” she said.

Inaugural NNSWF Local Champion Awards NORTHERN NSW Football is delighted to announce the recipients of its inaugural Local Champion Awards for April.

The NNSWF Local Champion Awards are a monthly recognition of individuals and teams who make a difference across the footballing community.

The winners this month included Stockton Sharks FC player Joshua Cappiello, who won the Player of the Month award, and Nelson Bay FC, who won Club of the Month.

Player of the Month Joshua Cappiello – Stockton Sharks FC Joshua is an inspiration.

Not only does he manage to play and coach his team but he inspires and encourages every

player to do their best.

A lifelong Newcastle Jets fan, his passion and commitment deserve to be recognised.

Club of the Month Nelson Bay FC Nelson Bay FC is one of the largest clubs operating within Northern NSW Football.

The committee have continued the great work of their predecessors in strengthening the club’s governance and striving to attract new people to the club.

The club have made a strong commitment to NNSWF community programs including delivering a Kick On for Women program and recently delivering Summer Football despite the pandemic impacts.

Nelson Bay FC create numerous opportunities for women and girls to engage with football and will be engaging with Female Football Week, which started last Friday.

Other winners were Volunteer of the Month, Ben Perry from Italo Stars FC; Referee of the Month, Lucy Hungerford; Coach of the Month, Scott Masters; and Team of the Month, Bellingen United FC First Grade.

Northern NSW Football Community Football Manager Ross Hicks congratulated the recipients and thanked them for their contribution to football in northern NSW. “Without people like Ben, Lucy, Scott and Joshua as well as clubs like Bellingen United and Nelson Bay FC we wouldn’t have a game.

“They make football what it is in our region,” Hicks said.

THE Positive Behaviour for Learning program has been running for years in schools across the Raymond Terrace area.

At the heart of the program is recognition of the good in our youth.

Seeing and rewarding effort and care.

Justin Tonks, the PBL co-ordinator at Irrawang High School, told news Of The Area, “Irrawang High School is proud to be a Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) School and a partner in the Raymond Terrace Community PBL Program.

“For many years we have seen the benefits and positive changes with the way our students represent our school and engage with the wider Port Stephens

community," he said.

The program engages with primary and high schools in the region and rewards the good things that every student can do and be a part of.

This week Hunter River High School recognised Cade Bink for his writing efforts.

Abbey Keeley from Irrawang High School was recognised for her values.

William LeRoux was awarded for helping an elderly lady while Novak Cannon assisted a kindergarten student.

Charlotte Gordon was recognised for her demonstration of respect and pride and Jayda McKenny was recognised for her leadership.

Tradition dictates that spring is the ultimate selling season. After all, the days are usually sunny, the skies are blue and gardens are abundant with flowers.

Consider this though; Winter can also be a great time to list and this seems to be an evolving trend. With the milder winters that we have been experiencing, people are still out seeking property.

The advantage for you as a seller is that you will be avoiding the property glut of spring. A lot of potential sellers are currently preparing their homes for a spring listing. This is great, but there will be a lot of competition for them when the time comes.

So seriously consider being the early bird this winter and attract that house hunting worm.

National Domestic Violence Prevention NATIONAL Domestic Violence Prevention Month is held each May to build community awareness of the impacts of domestic and family violence.

According to the Domestic Violence Prevention Centre, the key aims of the month are to: ● raise community awareness of domestic and family violence and its impacts; ● promote a clear message of no tolerance of domestic and family violence. ● ensure those who are experiencing domestic and family violence know how to access help and support; ● encourage people who use abuse and/or violence to take responsibility for their abusive behaviour and seek support to change.

The statistics are damning, with one in four Australian women (23 percent) having experienced physical or sexual violence by a current or former intimate partner since age fifteen (ABS, 2017).

On average, one woman a week is murdered by her current or former partner (Australian Domestic and Family Violence Review Network, 2018).

Local anti domestic and family violence advocate and counsellor Ina George told News Of The Area, “There are two important facts to know about domestic violence.

“One, it is not only physical - sometimes not at all, but it can be emotional, psychological, financial, sexual and socially isolating.

“Two, it is about power and control.

“An unbalanced, unhealthy, dysfunctional relationship.”

Ina has seen first hand the devastating effects domestic violence can have on families.

“As a child I witnessed horrific domestic violence by my father - culminating in the death of my parents when I was eleven years old.

“There were no resources available for victims back then, no AVO's, no Centrelink or parenting payment, no counselling services.

“With six children, my mother had nowhere to go.

“Today we are much more educated and informed about domestic violence and its impact on families, especially children.

“Unfortunately there is still so much stigma and shame attached for victims which deters them from speaking out and seeking help."

Ina encourages everyone experiencing domestic and family violence to seek support.

“How can we help?

“By encouraging anyone we know who may be a victim, albeit a silent one, to speak

Alcohol Free Zones to be re-established

THE re-establishment of a number of Alcohol-Free Zones in Medowie and Shoal Bay has been proposed.

In the recent Council meeting on 10 May 2022, it was recommended that Council endorse the community consultation process to re-establish the existing Alcohol-Free Zones in Medowie and Shoal Bay. Alcohol Free Zones were first established in Port Stephens in 2007 and have assisted stabilising the number of liquor offences in the Local Government Area.

These areas in Medowie exist on sections of Ferodale and Pepper Tree roads and in Shoal Bay on sections of Bullecourt Street, Government Road, Messines Street, Tomaree Road,

Lillian Street and Shoal Bay Road.

These areas are set to expire in 2022 and the proposal will now be exhibited and if no objections are received, the proposal to re-establish the zones will be adopted.

According to Port Stephens Council, Alcohol-Free Zones continue to operate in Nelson Bay, Raymond Terrace, Lakeside and Anna Bay. “These zones act to prohibit the consumption of alcohol on specified public roads, footpaths and car parks and are in force 24 hours per day.

“They provide Police with the power to seize and dispose of alcohol from a person in a zone or if there is reasonable cause to believe the person is about to drink alcohol in the zone.

“The intent of these measures

is to improve public safety by preventing anti-social behaviour and alcohol related crime occurring on public roads, footpaths and car parks,” Brock Lamont, Port Stephens Council’s Strategy and Environment Section Manager said.

There is an ability to suspend these zones for events and to allow alfresco dining, subject to alcohol licence conditions.

Mr Lamont says that local Police recommend the re-establishment of the zones and have confirmed that these Alcohol Free Zones will continue to assist them in managing and enforcing alcohol-related offences and have expressed concern that if alcohol consumption was permitted in these areas, anti-social behaviour would escalate to a significant level.

Silver Singles!

FOLLOWING his success in the NSW Association Croquet Bronze Singles Championship, Peter Gordon backed up to win the NSW Association Croquet Silver Singles Championship.

The Silver Championship is for AC players with handicaps 9-12 and was played Tuesday 10 to Thursday 12 May 2022 at Cammeray Croquet Club.

In winning the Bronze Singles, Peter’s handicap improved such that he qualified to play in the Silver Singles.

With only 6 players entered, the Championship was played as a single round-robin.

The weather was not kind and the Championship was played in consistent and at times heavy rain.

Peter was undefeated, though his last game was abandoned due to the heavy rain, and the fact that it had no bearing on the outcome of the competition, he won a close game 1615 against Diane Scott (Wollongong) but was otherwise untroubled and won the Championship with a massive +52 hoops.

Bay Croquet Club are now the current holders of 6 State Championships, The Wild Fig tournament was played Tuesday 3 to Friday 6 May 2022 at Taree Croquet Club.

36 players entered including Cheryl Lloyd, Karen Lilly, Sandy Tawa and Rae Uptin from Nelson Bay. The players played in separate blocks, 4 of singles and 2 of doubles, based on handicap.

Karen Lilly and Rae Uptin won the top block of doubles winning 6 of 8 games and finishing ahead of Bernie McAlary and Peter Saunders (Wollongong and Toronto) on hoop count-back.

Karen Lilly also finished 2nd in the 2nd block of singles winning 5 of 7 games.
