A NUMBER of pharmacies in Port Stephens are now administering AstraZeneca vaccinations to help in the fight against COVID-19.

Pharmacies in communities where there is limited access to a GP or vaccine clinic are now eligible to administer the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine to people aged 18 and over.

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer had his second dose of the vaccine on Monday at a local pharmacy.

"My biggest concern and highest priority is the safety and wellbeing of our community. We need to protect as many people as we can in Port Stephens — and the best way to do that is by getting vaccinated.

This recent clearing work has been conducted just months after the community objected to Bannisters removing trees and undergrowth in the same area in around May of this year.

This week a survey of the recent work revealed significant pruning and the removal of young healthy trees.

Local LandCare volunteer Cherylle Stone conducted a survey of the forest immediately after the trees were worked on

by Bannisters contractors and recorded, “23 trees that have limbs removed.

“Of those 20 are juvenile trees.

“In addition there are at least four small trees that have been removed.

“Where’s the logic in destroying the next generation of trees?

“The middle level has cabbage tree palms and low growing shrubs, juvenile trees, taller shrubs and vines.

THROUGHOUT the various lockdowns NSW has endured over the past year, one thing remains true, many of the older members of society have been left disconnected from the family, friends and the wider community.

For the older people in our community who are feeling disconnected or alone in these uncertain times, here’s a few ideas to keep you connected.

FriendLine is an initiative by Friends

For Good which offers older Australians an opportunity to call and have a free, anonymous and friendly chat with a volunteer over the phone via 18004CHATS anytime from 10am-8pm seven days a week.

Professor Judy Lowthian, head of research at the Bolton Clarke Research Institute said that FriendLine is an essential community service, particularly given current restrictions.

“Telephone support has been found to reduce feelings of social isolation, loneliness and depression and to improve quality of life.

"It’s a small, isolated area where a fire is unlikely to start, let alone gain intensity.

“The repeated attacks on the forest by Bannisters, aided by Council, are solely aimed at enhancing water views and increasing access to the foreshore,” she said.

When queried about the works Council originally advised News Of The Area, “One dying tree will be removed to mitigate a fall risk onto the building and be replaced to a suitable location on the site as habitat.”

Upon being provided with further evidence of at least four additional trees being removed a Council representative stated, “Any juvenile trees that have been removed to ground level are within the mid-story strata levels allowed within the permit.

Education To Fight Climate Emergency

COASTAL townships, communities living on flood plains and Australia’s regions are bearing the brunt of climate change with extreme weather causing erosion, floods, bush fires and rising sea levels.

A new study has found that greater investment and innovation in educating children about environmental issues is needed to help future generations respond to the climate emergency.

Queensland (USQ) and Stanford University, have identified that education is a cornerstone in supporting the necessary behavioural changes that are needed to address climate change.

Their findings were that education, particularly within the areas of humanities, arts and social sciences, is the only way to gain unified support to promote lasting social and environmental change.

Professor Alan Reid, from the Faculty of Education at Monash University, said environmental and science education helps people to identify fake information and ideologies,

and understand and respond appropriately to warnings about the climate emergency.

“The deepening environmental crisis will continue to worsen if there is not significant support and investment in environmental and science education,” Professor Reid said.

“Governments and other organisations need to direct more funding to education innovation to help young people address the complex, interlinked trends in the deteriorating state of ecosystems, biodiversity and climate, amongst other environmental issues.”

The experts add that consensus on our current environmental predicaments must also be supported by those in the humanities, arts, and social sciences, and wider society.

Professor Jo-Anne Ferreira from USQ, said the research identifies the importance of a whole-school approach as opposed to quick curriculum fixes for addressing the climate emergency.

“We also need to look at investment and innovation in lifelong learning and non schoolbased provision, alongside examining the focus of current initial teacher education and continuing professional development,” Professor Ferreira said.

“Global leaders should be discussing how to reimagine, recreate and restore

environmental education to reduce the consequences of the environmental crisis.

“Countries should embed environmental and science education throughout society in ways that make sense locally,” added Professor Justin Dillon from the University of Exeter.

The research paper highlights international surveys that show many governments continue to fail to support and invest enough in environmental and sustainability education across pre-school, school, college and university settings.

The researchers conclude that as a collective we must consider the role of education both critically and creatively in influencing and shaping any of our individual and collective behaviours.

Locally the climate emergency is impacting species.

Earthday.org tells us, “Rising temperatures and sea levels, less rain and more droughts.

“By 2100, an estimated 50% of all the world's species could go extinct because of climate change.

“Oceanic bird species are directly threatened by rising sea levels due to climate change.

“Sharks have difficulty hunting and a higher embryo mortality rate as ocean temperature and acidity rise worldwide.”

Coral reefs like the one at Fly Point are endangered due to rising sea temperatures and this reef was also adversely impacted by the March 2021 extreme weather event.

Locked Down

PORT Stephens, along with the rest of NSW is locked down and high viral loads of Covid-19 has been identified in the sewerage from the Medowie, Williamtown and Raymond Terrace catchment.

At the time of writing there were ten cases in the Port Stephens region, with three of unknown origin.

However, experts fear more cases may be lurking in the region due to the amount of virus found in the sewerage.

What this means for our community is a greater need for more testing, less mobility in the region and

following the public health orders.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the vast majority of people are doing the right thing but there are a handful of people who are wilfully breaking the rules and putting the rest of the community at risk.

“The increased fines and heightened police presence are about ensuring people who are doing the wrong thing are caught and punished appropriately,” Ms Berejiklian said.

Under the changes, there will be increased fines for Public Health Order breaches, a permit system to enter regional NSW and tightened rules for people in LGAs of concern to help reduce the spread of the Delta

Any person who wishes to travel to regional NSW for one of the following reasons must have a permit which will be made available on Service NSW. a.authorised workers from LGAs

Inspecting real estate. Any person inspecting real estate in the regions must now genuinely need a home to live in (no investment properties); c.

Travelling to your second home. This is now only allowed if you are using the home for work accommodation or if the home requires urgent maintenance and repairs (if so, only one person may travel there).

Dr David Durrheim, Public Health Physician for Hunter New England Health said, “We need to all work together to ensure that this lockdown is the very last one that we need to endure in the Hunter New England region.”

Community members have expressed dismay at facing long

delays in receiving test results.

Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington has also expressed concern that eligible workers aged 17 and over who live in Sydney’s LGAs of concern will be eligible for a $320 COVID-19 Test and Isolate Support Payments in a four week period for lost wages, while this payment is not offered to locals in Port Stephens.

“Shockingly, we have learned this morning that Hunter workers will not be eligible for the Berejiklian Government's $320 Test and Isolate Support Payment.

“This is unacceptable.

“I have called on the Premier to reverse this ridiculous decision, stop neglecting the Hunter region, and start governing for everyone.

“Workers in the Hunter deserve the same support as Sydney,” she said.

QR Cards provide easy COVID-safe check-ins

By Tara CAMPBELL THE NSW Government has announced ‘QR Cards’ to help all Australians stay COVID safe.

These cards are a hard-copy printed card with a unique QR code containing all your registered contact details.

When entering a business, a staff member will scan this card and your visit will be electronically recorded.

Digital and Customer Service Minister Victor Dominello welcomes this change to support those who may not have a phone, or struggle with technology.

“We want to make the COVID-Safe check-in as safe and as accessible as possible, which is why we’re introducing the COVID-19 check-in card.

“The days of seeking out somewhere to manually sign in with pen and paper should be an absolute last resort,” Mr Dominello said.

COVID-19 check-ins at venues allow NSW Health's contact tracing team to locate close or casual contacts in the event of a positive COVID-19 case.

Quick access to the information protects the community by allowing timely contact tracing Customers are able to apply for their personal COVID-19 check-in card by calling Service NSW on 13 77 88 or by registering online at service.nsw.gov.au.

The card will then be available to download and print out, or you can choose to have a plastic card mailed out.

This check-in method is only available at businesses that have a QR compatible device, and it will not be mandatory for all businesses to accept COVID-19 check-in cards.

Gone to the Dogs

THE Covid-19 lockdowns of 2020 and the past few weeks have seen an explosion in the number of people owning dogs as isolated residents seek companionship.

With both on-lead and off-lead waterfront exercise areas as well as an active dog obedience group, Tilligerry is an ideal place for responsible dog owners to live.

Fay Boyd says that getting out and about with a furry friend is a great way to get social interaction.

“Whereas passersby just say hello, other dog owners always stop for a chat and to compare notes,” she said.

“It's the same at MACDOG (Mallabula Anglican Church Dog Obedience Group),” she remarked.

“Great friendships are formed between both pets and people when we get together

at our church grounds,” she added.

“Currently, with the Covid lockdown, we are in recess but usually meet every Saturday morning before 8am with a beginners’ group welcome on the first Saturday of the month.”

Probus Tram Tour

THE Combined Probus Club of Medowie managed to have a day out together on the Newcastle Historic Tram Tour just before the lockdown.

Grahame Henderson, Secretary of the Combined Probus Club of Medowie told News Of The Area, “Chris, the operator of the Tram, was excellent, providing a commentary of the many and varied locations seen while

touring the City of Newcastle.

“The historic sites and the beaches made the day very enjoyable.”

Making the outing even more special the members took the ferry from Stockton to Queens Wharf and after the tour returned by ferry.

From there they went to Stockton Bowling Club for a delicious lunch to cap off a most memorable day.

“Unfortunately, outings and activities planned,

awards can inspire them.

Nelson Bay's Phil Murray was one such writer.

He won an award and went on to write a book about his legendary father 'Gelignite' Jack Murray, an outback rally driver.

The 2021 Port Stephens Literature Awards are now open for entry and are for short stories of up to 2000 words on any topic.

including a Tastes of the Upper Hunter Tour, and the regular ‘Munchies’ are all on hold due to the restrictions.

“While the Covid restrictions are in place all activities are suspended and hopefully the Club will resume the regular meetings soon,” he said.

The meetings are held at the Medowie Community Centre on the Third Wednesday of each month at 10.00 am.

There are regular Guest Speakers, covering many topics, particularly important to members.

“When I was first elected to Council some 17 years ago, I got great support from the Companion Animal group,” he said.

“At the time there was a concerted effort by some activists to get dogs away from the waterfront areas and confined to a caged-in compound up at the back of the oval,” he stated.

“I was against this so they campaigned for me.

“They even put my flyers in the doggie-doo black bags inside the dispensers in the parks.

“These bore the catchphrase 'Number One in the Tucker Box' printed on them and it worked like a charm!” he added.

It could be a work by Edwin Landseer, although the painting was believed to have been destroyed by a flood in 1928.

Could it have risen from the depths?

Man dies after crash – Raymond Have Your Say News Of The Area Terrace would love to hear your A MAN has died following a single-vehicle crash in the state’s Hunter Region at the weekend.

About 5.10pm on Saturday

14 August 2021, emergency services were called to Port Stephens Road, near Kangaroo Street, at Raymond Terrace following reports of a crash.

Officers attached to Port Stephens-Hunter Police District attended and

identified that a Holden Barina had crashed into a fence after leaving the road.

Despite the efforts of emergency services, the driver and sole occupant – a 69-yearold man – died at the scene.

A crime scene was

established and an investigation commenced into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.

Night Under The Stars

OUR Backyard is an initiative by Macquarie Life Church helping to provide a safe parking zone for people who are sleeping in their cars.

The zone is on the property of Macquarie Life Church on Macquarie Road in Cardiff and supports rough sleepers through hot showers, bathroom facilities, kitchen space, clean toilets, laundry facilities, WIFI and casework support.

This initiative is utilised by individuals, couples and families all across the Hunter and Port Stephens regions.

Our Backyard is hosting a charity fundraiser ‘Night Under The Stars’ to raise money for the organisation so that it can continue to give back to the community.

Participants will sleep in their cars for the night to help the community better understand the challenges faced by the homeless members of our community.

Danielle Whyte, Management Team at Macquarie Care told News Of The Area about the fundraiser.

“Due to the ever-present danger of the Delta variant growing in Newcastle we have had to cancel the live event at Our Backyard on 21 of August.

“However, we are still planning on doing the sleepout, now at the participant's homes, with the 7pm program now being an online streaming event.”

Night Under The Stars is an annual fundraising event, however due to the pandemic, there has been no fundraiser since 2019.

As a non-for-profit organisation, Our Backyard relies solely on donations from the community.

THE NSW Police Force launched Operation STAY AT HOME on Monday 16 August 2021, in a significant increase in public health order enforcement efforts across the state.

The operation will utilise resources from all Police Districts and Police Area Commands under Metropolitan and Regional Field Operations alongside officers attached to Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, Police Transport Command, Dog and Mounted Unit, and a number of other specialist commands as required.

Significantly, 1400 officers attached to Traffic and Highway Patrol Command will be dedicated to both static and mobile COVID-19 compliance operations on the state’s roads.

A further 500 Australian Defence Force troops, in addition to the 300 already deployed, will assist with compliance checks and patrols.

Operation STAY AT HOME will be coordinated from the Police Operations Centre (POC) in Sydney under the command of Acting Assistant Commissioner Andrew Holland.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliott said the NSW Government was

supporting the Commissioner’s call for assistance in the most practical way.

“The Commissioner asked for tighter Public Health Orders and the government agreed, the Commissioner asked for higher fines and the Government agreed, and the Commissioner asked for more ADF personnel and we have an additional 500 highly-trained ADF personnel arriving to assist,” Mr Elliott said.

“We’ve had to tighten the current public health orders because of the minority who exploited them.

“Enough is enough. If you do it, you will get fined.

“The only way out of this COVID-19 crisis is if we support each other and support the NSW Policeled compliance operation, Operation STAY AT HOME.” Deputy Commissioner Mal Lanyon, Metropolitan Field Operations, said the operation would see more police on the ground across Greater Sydney, utilising some of the strongest powers ever given to police.

“The level of non-compliance by some members of the community is unacceptable and we will be doubling down with compliance and enforcement to make sure we get ahead of the Delta strain,” Deputy Commissioner Lanyon said.

“There will be more roadblocks on main arterial roads and backroads from tomorrow, and these operations will continue to expand throughout this week in order to enforce the permit system announced by the NSW Government this morning,” Deputy Commissioner Willing said.

“There will be nowhere to hide if you are doing the wrong thing.

“If you travel anywhere beyond your LGA at the moment, you are putting everyone else in NSW at considerable risk.

“From the start, this has been about reducing movement across the state and protecting the health and safety of everyone, and this operation significantly strengthens those efforts.”

Positive Behaviour and Learning In Our Community

THE Positive Behaviour and Learning (PBL) program has continued despite lockdown.

The nominations are made in arrears so we will continue to see students recognised as the lockdown continues.

This week's nominees are noted for their kindness, sharing and attitude.

Hunter River High’s Brianna Slater was nominated for kindness as was Medowie Public School’s Giaan McLeay.

Irrawang High School’s School Captain Riley Neil was nominated for the way he conducts himself in his role and for living by the PBL values.

Justice May-McKenny of Grahamstown Public School was nominated for sharing with a teammate who had missed out at a sporting event.

Seaham Public School’s Ezekiel Botha received a nomination for being supportive and caring towards other students.

Irrawang Public School’s Peter Law was nominated for his politeness and respect while out shopping.

Marley Lucas of Raymond Terrace Public School is a great mentor who supports younger students transitioning to the school.

Karuah Public School’s Ava Hurstfield was nominated

for having great manners and being respectful.

Salt Ash Public School’s Bethany Ash was nominated for being a positive, safe and

NEW road safety upgrades and improvements will be delivered in the Hunter thanks to funding from the Australian Government.

New South Wales Nationals Senator Perin Davey said the funding will deliver crucial road safety improvements across the Hunter region whilst also supporting shovelready construction jobs.

“This vital funding provides a critical boost to local jobs and the economy in an uncertain environment, but it also delivers life-saving upgrade works to keep people safe on our roads,” Senator Davey said.

“A total of over $6.1 million will be shared across the Hunter to fund new road safety upgrades and improvements to help reduce the number of fatalities and serious injuries occurring on our roads.

“We must continue to invest in local projects to ensure the community gets home safely at night, as currently around 1,200 people

die and 40,000 are seriously injured on our roads each year.”

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Barnaby Joyce said one life lost on Australian roads is one too many.

“That’s why the Australian Government has committed $3 billion for the nationwide Road Safety Program,” the Deputy Prime Minister said.

“Our Government is committed to keeping our communities safe, while securing our economic recovery.

“The funding supports the fast roll-out of life-saving safety works on rural and regional roads, and is another example of the Australian Government working to reduce the number of Australians missing around the dinner table due to tragedies on our roads.”

The Australian Government’s funding for the Road Safety Program is subject to ‘use it or lose it’ provisions

and will deliver life-saving treatments on regional roads and protect vulnerable road users across New South Wales, while also supporting local jobs and providing a welcome boost to local economies.

The ‘use it or lose it’ provisions require states and territories to use their notionally allocated funds within a timeframe, or the funds can be reallocated to projects in other jurisdictions.

Assistant Minister for Road Safety and Freight Transport Scott Buchholz said road safety was a key priority for the Australian Government and this investment in road upgrades would provide a boost to the economy while ensuring Australians can get home sooner and safer.

“Making our roads safer is a critical component of our work to reduce deaths and serious injuries on our roads and move towards achieving vision zero—that is zero deaths or serious injuries on our roads by 2050,” Mr

New recruits for Port Stephens-Hunter Police THE NSW Police Force has welcomed 182 police recruits after they were sworn-in as probationary constables at a private attestation ceremony, held in compliance with COVID-19 restrictions, in Goulburn last week.

Eight new probationary constables have been assigned to Lower-Hunter Police Districts.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliott congratulated the recruits who are starting their new careers in times of unprecedented challenges “Congratulations to the men and women of class 348, who graduate today and will join the NSW Police Force when it most needs versatile, adaptable officers,” Mr Elliott said.

“The career path you embark on today will test your courage, your resilience and your

decision-making.

“You are joining a police family of more than 17,000; a modern, well-equipped force focused on driving down crime rates and protecting the community.

“The NSW Government will be there, too, to support you and ensure you have world-class training, and the technology and resources you need to best serve the people of NSW,” Mr Elliott said.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin welcomed the new police officers to the Port StephensHunter and Newcastle City Police Districts.

“Some of the Force’s newest probationary constables have elected to come back to serve this community while others have chosen to start their careers in the Hunter district,” Mr Martin said.

“On behalf of our community, I am pleased to be able to welcome our newest police

officers.”

Class 348 includes 121 men and 61 women.

Twenty-three recruits were born overseas in countries including Canada, China, Columbia, Fiji, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Iraq, New Zealand, South Africa, South Korea, Syria, Ukraine, the United Kingdom and Vietnam.

Some recruits entered the NSW Police Academy straight from school or university, while others left established professional careers and trades.

Many are from backgrounds where English is a second language Assyrian, Arabic, Dari, Greek, Hindi, Korean, Russian, Spanish, Turkish, and Urdu.

Six recruits are Indigenous, with two recruits joining through the Indigenous Police Recruitment Our Way Delivery (IPROWD) program.

The white-bellied sea eagle is listed as a vulnerable species under the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016.

The breeding period in eastern Australia extends from June to December and usually one or two eggs are laid.

Incubation takes 35-40 days and the young fledge from October to January.

One bird, probably the female, is currently sitting on the nest which suggests eggs have already been laid.

The nest is well hidden atop a large blackbutt tree overlooking the waters of Salamander Bay. The two adults have been

seen around the area since March, often roosting near the nest site.

This vulnerable species nesting in Mambo gives heart to many who fought to save the wetlands from development.

The wetland is a vital habitat for many different species including the koala.

Irene Jones is one local that campaigned hard to see Mambo Wanda Wetlands returned to the public.

“Not only vital habitat in Mambo must be protected but all vital habitat in the area needs to be protected.

“Our fauna and flora must be protected,” she said.

LOCAL birdwatcher Neil Fraser has shared the news that a pair of nesting White-bellied Sea Eagles have returned to Mambo Wanda Wetlands.

Neil has been watching birds for thirty odd years.

The pair of sea eagles (Haliaeetus leucogaster) have returned to a nest located in the Mambo Wanda Wetlands that they left in 2018.

The pair were last observed nesting there in the summer of 2017-18 but did not use the nest in subsequent seasons until now.
