By Marian SAMPSON WHEN serving on Port Stephens Council Councillor Sally Dover created a legacy for the women of the future for our region.

On International Women’s Day each year scholarships are awarded by Council, and in 2021 these were awarded to Nikita Austin, Elle Clayton-Brown and Bernadette Flynn.

Each of these women will receive $1000 toward their future goals.

A recipient of the award last year Chontelle Grecian spoke at the ceremony, she told News Of The Area, “When I look at what women in leadership means, I feel that it is not only ensuring we have women in important senior leadership roles in

Police in Brief LEMON TREE PASSAGE In the late evening and the earlier hours of the 5 and 6 March 21, Police attended a residence in Lemon Tree Passage three times after receiving a number of calls in relation to a Noise Complaint.

On the third time as a result of threatening behaviour, an intoxicated 24-year-old male, in possession of a knife was arrested and charged with two (2) x Intimidation and one (1) x Armed with intent.

The accused has been bail refused until 30 March 2021.

RAYMOND TERRACE On 11 March a 36-yearold female from Lake Haven was arrested and charged with multiple stealing from motor vehicles, attempted steal from

motor vehicle and property theft incidents committed in the Raymond Terrace area between the 10 and 11 of March.

Police were called to a carpark in Raymond Terrace where the woman was located and searched.

As a result of the search police will allege a number of Fleet Fuel Cards, business cards, store credit cards, cannabis, drug paraphernalia, a new mobile phone, a car dash camera, a registered lottery ticket in another person’s name and a small amount of coins were located.

The accused was arrested and taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station where inquiries revealed the items were stolen from several unlocked vehicles parked in Raymond Terrace over the last two days.

Police also confirmed one of the items in Mayfield.

The accused was charged with ten offences including Larceny (x3), Goods in Custody

FINGAL BAY A number of high-end Mountain Bikes were stolen from around Nelson Bay over the Summer Holiday period.

On 8 March as a result of a local operation led by the Port StephensHunter Police District Proactive Crime Team conducted to address and investigate the thefts, police recovered eight mountain bikes at an estimated total value of $50,000 from an address in Fingal Bay. Five of the bikes were confirmed stolen from Port Stephens and neighbouring Commands.

Enquiries are continuing enquiries to identify the owners of the remaining three unidentified bikes.

Police are appealing for anyone with information on stolen push bikes in Port Stephens to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Beach blitz

AS Port Stephens bids farewell to a mostly mild summer, thrill-seekers are still flocking to the sand to soak up some last minute beach fun.

The watchful eye of Port Stephens police has not missed misbehaviour on the dunes however, with complaints of illegal camping, dangerous driving, driving without a valid beach permit, and driving unregistered

vehicles.

It was decided by Port Stephens police in conjunction with Worimi Lands Council, National Parks and Wildlife Service and Port Stephens Council, that regular compliance operations would be conducted throughout the year, without warning, to ensure that 4WD enthusiasts

were complying with rules and regulations.

“It’s designed to combat the hooliganism on the beach,” explained Inspector Ian Skelly of Raymond Terrace Police Station.

On Sunday 28 February, the first operation was conducted on Stockton Beach, with police performing

with two other passengers and had only just set off, when the storm began to gain on

them.

A scary ferry trip across Port

ROSE Ringuet thought that she and her family were going to have a nice ferry trip back from Nelson bay, but when a horrific storm hit the waters, passengers on the ferry were left fearing for their lives.

After noticing that many of the other passengers on the ferry had not boarded, Rose began to worry about the storm that was quickly approaching.

THE Age Care Royal Commission has shown us that elder abuse is a very real threat to vulnerable members of our community.

Sadly this abuse happens in more settings than just aged care facilities.

Sometimes it even happens in an older person’s home.

Medowie Based Solicitor Brooke Vitnell told News Of The Area, “As a local solicitor based in Medowie I was invited to join Medowie Probus Group to address their members and guests on the topics of Elder Abuse, Enduring Guardianship, Enduring Power of Attorney and Institutionalised Child Sexual Abuse.

“The most common types of elder abuse are:

financial abuse, sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional and psychological abuse, isolation / neglect and abandonment.”

The Australian Institute of Family Studies estimates that 14% of older Australians aged 65 years and older, experience some form of abuse every day.

These statistics are particularly alarming given the growing number of older Australians in our region and here in Port Stephens.

“In our society one's age should have no bearing on one’s right to live free of financial or physical abuse,” Ms Vitnell said.

Victims of elder abuse, physical or financial or someone who may suspect they know a victim should call the police.

“The storm started getting worse, and the ferry began to go side to side, virtually kissing the water on each side.

“The waves were horrible and we crashed over every wave, almost filling the boat with water.

“For a good 25-35 minutes, my family feared for our lives.

“I had never been in a storm as bad as this was.

“My sister couldn’t swim and my partner has a disability and I began to think that ‘this is it’ and started to plan for the worst,” Rose told News Of The Area.

As the ferry hit the cross water (where the ocean goes into the river), Rose described this as the worst section of the

trip with raging waters unlike anything she had ever seen before.

The moment that the ferry reached the shore Rose and her family began to clap and cheer for the captain and even shouted “Hip hip hooray”.

They could finally breathe a sigh of relief.

They were safe.

“He (James) had control of the ferry the entire time.

“From the get-go, he told us that he would get us home safe and he did.

“I cannot thank him enough for getting us through, without his skill and control, we wouldn’t be alive.

“However, I don’t think I will be getting onto a ferry anytime soon unless I know for sure that the weather will be okay,” said Rose.

Support For Koalas From Italy With Love

MANY locals were gutted when they learnt of the fate of Patu the koala who was hand raised from the pouch after his mother passed.

What we may not have realised was that Patu not only won hearts here in Port Stephens but across the world.

It was a very sad day for everyone at Port Stephens Koalas when Patu passed.

Yet his passing has led to a very special donation all the way from Italy from Italy with love!

Francesca Cioffi, from Lecce, Italy, was following the news of the horrific bushfires last summer and the devastating effect it had on koalas.

She was inspired to do something to help, so she adopted one of the koalas on the Port Stephens Koalas’ website, and also made a donation.

Francesca wanted to do more, so she contacted the team at Port Stephens Koalas.

“I'm Italian and I have been following your website since the recent bushfires.

“I love the idea to help

you raise money for your little and cute koalas very much, even though I live so far from Australia.

“I'd like to know, if you are pleased to receive my handmade felt koalas, in order to sell them and fundraise for your organization.”

Shortly after the bushfires, when Covid-19 struck, Italy was hit hard and Francesca spent countless hours throughout 2020 throughout lockdown designing and handcrafting her felt koala decorations, keyrings and bookmarks.

Francesca was particularly touched by the sad loss of Patu at the koala hospital last September, and she handcrafted a felt koala in his memory.

“This is my gift for you at Port Stephens to keep forever: a felt version of our little boy.

“He has a pink rose in his hands because I read you buried him under a rose,” she said.

Should parliament vote to change the legislation they will be voting to cap the superannuation guarantee for Australians at a much lower rate than that they themselves receive with parliamentarians receiving contributions of 15.4 per cent from the government.

Cutting super will also add more than $33 billion to the aged pension, a burden we all pay through higher taxes.

For a region where people choose to retire to, more in the kitty means a greater quality of life in the long term.

Parklets Provide Seating For Endless Summer Entertainment

SHOAL Bay got an injection of vibrancy in the newly activated parklets which have been installed outside some businesses on the main street.

The parklets were originally destined for Nelson Bay, however traders felt that loss of parking spaces was detrimental to business and given that there were further opportunities for street dining the parklets have been relocated to Shoal Bay.

The parklets occupy five parking spaces commencing east of the 15 minute parking zone outside the chemist and heading towards the Country Club.

While five spaces have been lost on the main road an additional seven spaces have been created in the street which runs parallel to the beach.

The informal car park on the corner of Government Road Shoal Bay at the traffic lights is about to be improved with marked spaces creating an additional 30 parking spaces to cater for the busy holiday traffic.

Mayor Ryan Palmer told News Of The Area, “The parklets were originally destined for Nelson Bay as a part of

a shared spaces grant.

“The aim is to get people out and about and back into the street.”

Local business operator Dave Harding told News Of The Area, “It brings outdoor seating areas, brightens Shoal Bay up and creates a vibrant atmosphere.”

“It brightens the joint up, and opens new opportunities for business.”

The parklets have been installed just in time for Council’s endless summer entertainment program which will see artists performing on the streets of Shoal Bay on 13 March from 5-9pm, 20 March from 6-8pm, 27 March from 5-7pm and 10 April 5-7pm.

Thursday saw the launch of the parklets which are not quite finished, safety barriers are still to be installed to stop pedestrian movement from the parklets onto the busy road.

Rotary Charity Golf Day To Support HRMI

CHARITIES have been hit hard by COVID-19 but it isn’t going to stop the Rotary Club of Nelson Bay from holding its annual golf day in 2021.

The Rotary Club of Nelson Bay has waited patiently for 12 months to conduct its twenty ninth Annual Charity Golf Day. The event was scheduled to be held at Nelson Bay Golf course in early April 2020 and was postponed due to the Covid 19 pandemic.

After being postponed in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions the club is excited that one year on the event now will be held on Friday 26 March 2021.

Port Stephens Council and Toyota Port Stephens are the major sponsors ensuring this event will proceed.

Many other local businesses have provided financial and other support, plus entered teams to play on the day.

Rotary Club Director and Charity Golf Day organiser, Arja Levonpera, has done an outstanding job coordinating sponsors, players and activities.

Ms Levonpera told News Of The Area, “Without the loyal support of both

sponsors and players, plus Rotary Club members and volunteers on the day, the event would simply not occur.

“The Rotary Club of Nelson Bay is currently celebrating 65 years of serving the local community.

“With the club's charity golf days giving $250,000 back to the local community.”

While many local businesses are still doing it tough, Ms Levonpera stated their unwavering loyalty to the Rotary Club was reward in itself and urged local residents to support local businesses.

Port Stephens Council Mayor Ryan Palmer, a strong supporter of this event, said Council recognised the great community work carried out by Rotary and other community organisations, especially in the past 12 months where fund raising projects have been curtailed through Covid-19 restrictions.

Mayor Palmer said a small investment to Rotary for this event will see a greater return to the community through projects already supported by the Club.

Port Stephens Toyota has supplied a Toyota Yaris, valued at $26,000, as a major hole-in-one prize.

Manager Michelle Smith, stated that Port Stephens Toyota is a supporter of Rotary, and one of the principals of the Burton Family Group of companies, Norm Burton, a Rotarian at East Maitland, was recently awarded an Order of Australia Medal for his services to the community and Rotary.

Proceeds from this year’s Charity Golf Day will enable the Rotary Club of Nelson Bay to provide funds to HMRI (Hunter Medical Research

Institute) for Associate Professor Kelvin Kong’s project for more efficient Indigenous ear diagnosis and many other Rotary community projects.

Professor Kong has had a long association with the Rotary Club of Nelson Bay which has already given $20,000 and a further $10,000 is needed to meet the Club’s initial commitment.

The Federal Government is also supporting Kelvin Kong’s important project.

Over 100 players have registered to play in the tournament, with some places still available.

It is a friendly day, with the Ambrose format providing opportunities for golfers of all abilities.

There are many great prizes on offer, plus auctions and meat raffles after the day’s play, where hamburgers and chips will be served in the Clubhouse.

Comedians perform bizarre and hilarious tasks with a liberated ease that only the British could muster in this top-notch game show. Fronted by Greg Davies (below), along with his ‘sidekick’ Alex Horne, who concocted the show’s premise more than 10 years ago at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, season six kicks off with two episodes tonight. The fresh panel – Alice Levine, Asim Chaudhry, Liza Tarbuck, Tim Vine (Not Going Out) and Russell Howard (The Russell Howard Hour) – grapple with wheelbarrows and making towers out of lemons, among other absurd things, in what is only the beginning of their 10-episode shenanigans.

THE 2021 Saturday Pennant Competition commenced on 13 March, with 5 sides from the Club entered in this competition.

No. 2 Grade played Hamilton North at home and in a close fought match

Thursday, 18 March, 2021

won overall by 64-60 shots (points 10-0), No. 4 Grade played Mayfield West away and won (points 9.5-.5).

No. 6 Grade played Tea Gardens away and in another close encounter won by 5956 shots (points NA).

No.7-1 Grade played Nelson Bay away and lost by

54-57 shots (points 2-8).

No. 7-2 Side played Valentine at home and the inclusion of our Lady players in the Men's competition proved a winning move, recording a comfortable win by 67-50 shots (points 9-1).

Sometimes the efforts of the most diligent reporter can

get the story wrong and this was the case with the report on the Club Minor Singles recently.

With apologies to the Winner, Mick Slater a correction is following.

Some facts were correct with skill and luck both playing a part in the result.

Mick in fact was never headed in the game.

The closest Leo Payne came was in about the 5th last end when he scored 3 shots to level the scores at 27 all.

Two ends later Leo was holding 4 shots and game when Mick trailed the kitty to restrict Leo to 1 shot (score Mick 29-Leo 28).

Next end Leo played a weighted shot to trail the kitty to all his back bowls and close

out the game only to see the kitty rebound from one of his bowls and give Mick 1 shot (score Mick 30 Leo 28).

Leo scored 1 shot on the next end and Mick drew 2 accurate draw shots on the last end to which Leo could not respond, the final score was Mick 32 Leo 29.

A great game well worthy of a Finals match.

PANTRY PEEKERS “I saw your recent Instagram post where you suggested that a tidy pantry is essential when selling because buyers peek in pantries!

Is that really a ‘thing’?”

FIRSTLY, thanks for checking in to randrproperty on Instagram! I hope you’re enjoying keeping up with our listings, sales and community activities. And yes, pantry peeking is definitely a ‘thing’. While keeping your entire home clean and tidy throughout the sales period is essential, often forgotten is what lies behind cupboard doors and buyers will look, generally to see how the space is configured – but also to sticky beak. It is regularly said that kitchens sell homes; storage being a key component, so clean, organized cupboards including the pantry – the heart of every meal – creates a sense of space and calm. Messy packets spilling and bottles oozing onto shelves not only creates a sense of chaos they are also a foundation for mice and rats. Opening a cupboard door to be greeted by chaos and worse - mouse droppings - is a major turn off for buyers. Pantries don’t have to be filled with expensive products, it’s not about status, it’s about care for a home a vendor is seeking to sell. With a neat and tidy pantry you can smile knowing you have the pantry peeker’s seal of approval!

When Waterfronts Were Free

umbrella of 'permissive occupancy' and without doubt the one owned by 'Skipper' was the most interesting.

It sat in the middle of Henderson Park where the play equipment now stands.

Old Skipper had no water or sewerage connected and used the public amenities block.

He had a pet white cockatoo to ward off intruders and sold fresh crabs which he would net in front of his house.

The Council tried to get rid of him but he refused to go.

Indeed, his brother moved in when Skipper died and dug in as well. Finally when he too passed on, the bulldozers flattened it.

The last of the boat sheds was at 'The Gibbers'.

Our then Coast Guard tried to get possession but failed, bringing to an end a time when waterfronts were 'owned' by simple fisherfolk and holiday makers at little or no cost. Sad, isn't it?

JUST recently a waterfront property at Tanilba Bay sold for over $1.5 million.

This price was achieved just two weeks after being listed and buyers are still swamping agents with enquiries about similar properties.

There was however, a time when you could 'own' your own private waterfront and even build your own 'private' boatshed and jetty without paying anything.

Mallabula Point used to have several boat sheds erected on its rocky foreshore with rails leading into the water.

One even had a motorized winch for hauling in a boat.

It's owner, George Harper, could launch his boat, run his gill net and be back home in a bit over 20 minutes!

There was also a 'private' jetty nearby which anybody could use.

That changed when q The Davis family and others Council notified the owners at the old Gibbers boat shed. to demolish the illegal structures or they would do it and bill them.

Suddenly nobody claimed ownership and the Council tore them down.

They did however leave the jetty which, over the years was maintained by locals until a $100,000 grant from the Federal Government saw a new one built.

It suns itself on my deck, follows me in the garden and if the door is open, and curls up on my lap and falls asleep.

The neighbours are at work all day and so they are unaware of this behaviour.

The thing is, I’ve become very attached to the cat, and I feel as though it feels the same about me.

Last night when it was being called to come in at night, it hid in my shed, and ended up on a little bed I’d made it in the hallway.

Should I speak to the neighbours about adopting it more formally?

Mrs Tiffany B. Dear Tiffany, I think you must realise that you have, in fact, turned into a cat napper, and I don’t mean the type that curls up in front of the midday movie for a little power sleep.

I have no doubt that the cat enjoys your company during the day when it is lonely, but you have definitely encouraged the behaviour by allowing it to sleep on your lap during the day and in its own little bed that you’ve made it at night.

Your poor neighbours were probably frantic that their feline friend had gone missing, and there you were, holding it hostage, complete with a crocheted rug and a little mouse toy no doubt.

Did you feed it some sardines or tuna as an added enticement? You can’t just adopt other people’s pets, Tiffany.

Even if they show you affection.

I would recommend that you contact the various pet rescue facilities in the local area, and perhaps adopt a cat that doesn’t have an owner and is looking for the sort of love and attention that you are able to provide.

You also might like to let your neighbours know that their cat is roaming around when they are at work and quite possibly enjoying not only your hospitality, but also the birds and lizards in the local area.

Under 12's come close in semi final

TILLIGERRY under 12s played their semi final on Saturday against Hunter Valley Grammar School.

Unfortunately, despite a strong performance against undefeated opposition, the talented Port Stephens youngsters did not come away victorious on the day.

Tilligerry bowled first, bowling out the Hunter Valley opposition for 78.

Tilligerry then took to the crease to chase the score down.

Unfortunately the last wicket fell just a mere 11 runs short.

Sail Port Stephens heading off to the beach

HAVING built Sail Port Stephens into one of Australia’s premier yachting regattas, organisers are now looking to replicate the same successful formula for dinghy, skiff, catamaran and sailboard racing.

For the first time, a full off-the-beach regatta will be held on 24-25 April – the peak weekend for Sail Port Stephens activities, including the NSW IRC Championships.

There will be junior and open divisions, with all classes invited to attend.

Host club Bay Sailing Centre, situated on the shores of Salamander Bay, has a 40-year history of running local dinghy sailing as well as world, national and state championships for myriad classes.

It faces east towards the majestic Port Stephens headlands and a body of water that’s widely regarded as offering one of the best sailboat racing tracks in Australia.

A long stretch of white sandy beach and two grassy reserves either side of the clubhouse provide ample rigging and launching opportunities.

In addition, there is a

public wharf and concrete boat ramp 100 metres to the north of the site.

The event will bring together all the laid-back fun factors that make Sail Port Stephens so popular with competitors, combined with the professional race management resources of Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club, which was granted the lease to Bay Sailing Centre in December 2020.

“Sail Port Stephens started in 2007 with just 25 yachts, a far cry from the 160 entries received for our last regatta in 2019, and once again we’re at absolute full capacity for marina berths and moorings in 2021,” said Race Director Jennie Hughes.

“So, we’re aiming to build the off-the-beach component in a similar way, starting from the ground up.

“It’s a great time to be at Port Stephens, with ideal weather conditions, lots of social activities and a relaxed sailing carnival atmosphere throughout the area.

“Plus, we’ll be ramping up the media coverage with drone footage and professional photography to give class associations a major publicity boost.”

“We’ve previously held an event for juniors only in onesail classes like Lasers, O’pen Skiffs and Optimists. Opening it up to other classes, and adult sailors, creates more opportunities for families and couples to compete,” Jennie Hughes adds.

“Already the NSW Finn class has expressed interest, and they may bring some boats down from Queensland.

Autumn Doubles

24 MEMBERS turned-out for the intra-club handicap Autumn Doubles at the Nelson Bay Croquet Club on Sunday 7 March.

Partners were randomly drawn and the 12 teams organised into four blocks of three teams.

An initial round-robin saw the teams that won each block play-off in a semi-final and final.

The second and third teams played-off in a Shield and Plate competition.

The winners of the blocks were Liz Friend and Cheryl Lloyd (on hoop count back),

David and Penny Wilson (unbeaten), Roz Slaughter and Rae Uptin (unbeaten) and Linda Butler and Sally Ingram (on hoop count back).

In the semi-finals, Liz and Cheryl beat Linda and Sally 7-4 and David & Penny beat Roz and Rae 7-3.

Liz and Cheryl went on to win the final 7-4 over David and Penny.

The winners of the Shield competition were Trevor & Rae Black and the winners of the Plate competition were Faby Batho and Peter Gordon.

FORGET the hype around all of the professional shredheads gracing the shores of Port Stephens lately, the real stars of the show have been the region's grommets!

After the big showing for the Port Stephens Pro at One Mile Beach earlier in the month the Bay Area Boardriders were keen to get their next round rolling along at Samurai Beach on Saturday.

When the waves didn’t come to the party for the day the older age divisions were canned and the club’s new generation got to take on the micro-tubes with some adult assistance.

amongst it, the club’s new family-fun focus got to shine through.

“This year we’ve really been trying to realign Bay Area Boardriders with creating a family-oriented club that likes to have plenty of fun on the beach and in the water,” said Buey.

“We surf because we all get to have fun in an all-inclusive environment and that’s what we want to showcase this year.

“It’s all about getting together to share waves and the beautiful region that we’re all very privileged to call home!”

While there was still a sense of competition between the younger generation as they traded tubes at the Northern end of Samurai, the club declared all involved the winners on the day as they rolled back to Robinson Reserve for a social gathering.

“While we still held heat formats for the day, today was just a good solid social outing for the club and the families and friends around the club,” said Buey.

“Notch it up as a win for all of our members, stakeholders, sponsors and surfers this year!”
