Prime Minister Scott Morrison believes the way forward out of COVID-19 is in secure jobs for all Australians.

With COVID-19 playing havoc with the tourism industry, many of the region's Jetstar employees were stood down last year.

Many families suffered as a result, like that of Ben Davis who was a trades supervisor at Jetstar, looking after the Jetstar apprentices and tradesmen at Williamtown airport.

A $500 donation was given to Marine Rescue Lemon Tree Passage, for the purchase of a safety message banner to be used at all boat ramps.

A $4200 donation was also given to Plastic Free Port Stephens towards Project One (aluminium water bottle project) and Project Two (Terracycle bin at Salamander Bay Recycling Centre).

A $7000 donation was

provided to Caring for Our Port Stephens Youth, to go towards 2021 rent at Tomaree Library.

Karuah Local Aboriginal Land Council received a $9911 donation for a basketball system for Karuah Kinnections Basketball.

Ben isn’t in the defence force, but reports for his civilian job through the defence force chain of command.

He believes that working in the defence side of aerospace is more stable than working in commercial flights.

“We have jobs for the next 30 years,” he stated.

“We are local to the airport, I can still use my skill set and we don’t have to move, the other options were to move interstate, the Defence Minister, and BAE have moved mountains to get us onboard,” he said.

“It’s a massive step up but it is awesome,” she said.

She noted that her employment is now a lot more secure than when she was working

in the commercial airline business.

Those who have made the change to working on the fighter jets likened it to working on Ferrari’s after having worked on the bus.

Who Cares for the Carer?

Caring can be overwhelming.

IN our community there are many people who are quietly making very real differences to the lives of others.

They are our carers.

They are literally performing an ultimate act of love, for a partner, a parent, a child or even a close friend, it may be short term or a journey with no end in sight.

They give of themselves, and often this comes at a personal cost.

A cost to relationships, mental health and wellbeing.

Carers NSW tells us that, “Throughout the caring journey, many carers experience a range of emotions including anger, depression,

anxiety, loneliness, loss and grief.”

They recommend that carers access counselling through the Carer Gateway.

Counselling can assist with dealing with overwhelming and confusing feelings, creating a better understanding of your experiences as a carer, working out your own needs and developing ways to solve problems, learning how to manage conflict, stress and other emotional factors and learning and apply healthy communication boundaries.

Counselling can also assist with building resilience and learning to cope with change, improving mental,

emotional and physical wellbeing, coping with grief and loss and learning how to re-build when your caring role ends and identifying support systems and being connected to services.

Carer Counselling is now provided through Carer Gateway by calling 1800 422 737 or visiting www.carergateway.gov. au.

Locally there are opportunities available to support carers.

Local counsellor Katrina Mason told News Of The Area, “Paid or unpaid the common struggle for those in service of others (including those dedicated to environmental

conservation) circles around symptoms of emotional and physical fatigue.

“On one hand it ignites dedication and a sense of satisfaction and on the other, it can leave us feeling exhausted, empty and cynical.”

She believes that exhaustion in human service is not a new phenomenon.

It has been called burnout, compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma, secondary traumatic stress, and empathy fatigue.

“Learning mindfulness and meditation is a perfect way to start.

“It is known to reduce anxiety and stress whilst improving

self-awareness, sleep patterns and general mental health. In my Sustainability in Service workshops, I recommend basic mindfulness training as a foundational skill before then moving

onto techniques which specifically address the effects of empathy fatigue and vicarious trauma.”

improvements as part of the Raymond Terrace and Heatherbrae Strategy.

said while small improvements have been made recently and over the years, Raymond Terrace was ready for big solutions.

“There are many residents and businesses who’ve invested in Raymond Terrace and it’s time for us to now start investing

in this great town,” Mayor Palmer said.

“People have been waiting a long time for these improvements but we need the dollars.

“Unlike Nelson Bay we don’t have a funding source like smart parking to put back into the CBD,” he said.

Council voted unanimously to apply for $1 million grant funding under the NSW Government’s Public Spaces Legacy Program and $350,000 from the NSW Government’s Your High Street Program.

It also committed to using $200,000 from the Federal Government’s Local Roads and community Infrastructure Program, and acknowledged the $700,000 already

Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants APPLICATIONS for the 2021 Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants Program are now open for Port Stephens.

Primary schools and early learning centres across Port Stephens can also apply for a Bee Bonus, as part of a $1.5million investment by Woolworths into the program.

Up to a thousand Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants are being offered, for up to $1,000 each.

Recipients in the area can use the grant to grow a vegetable or bush tucker garden, composting, worm farm or other environmental projects in their schools and communities, helping to educate the younger generation about the importance of the environment.

Primary schools and early learning centres can also apply for a Bee Bonus, in addition to the $1,000 grant.

The Bee Bonus offers $500 of extra funding to support the conservation of Australia’s bee population.

An estimated 15.6 million hectares of native Australian forest was destroyed in the 2019-2020 bushfire crisis, resulting in a negative impact on the ability of honey bees to provide pollination services to Australian crops and

With bees and pollination a crucial part of the horticultural and agricultural industry in Australia, schools and early learning centres can use the Bee Bonus in the development of native beehives, pollinator gardens or bee education programs.

Woolworths Junior Landcare Grant projects focus on sustainable food production, improving waste management practices or enhancing native habitats such as vegetable gardens, recycling initiatives and native habitat enhancement and indigenous perspectives.

Landcare Australia CEO, Dr Shane Norrish said, “Junior Landcare helps young Australians develop skills,

share knowledge, create new experiences and foster connections with place and community.

“The Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants Program encourages continuous participation from childhood to adulthood so that the children of today, become the Landcarers of the future.

“Bees and pollination are integral to our environment and the new Bee Bonus will help grow Raymond Terrace students’ understanding of our native habitats, why bees are an important part of our ecosystem and their role in fresh food production and supporting biodiversity through pollination.”

The investment is the

largest number of Junior Landcare grants offered in one round to date.

Since 2018, Woolworths has also contributed more than $1million to a total of 1,155 primary schools and early learning centres across Australia.

The program is funded through purchases of the Woolworths Bag for Good, an initiative that was launched in June 2018 when Woolworths removed single-use plastic shopping bags across all stores.

Applications for Woolworths’ Junior Landcare Grants are open from 10 February.

Lions Dogs Supporting Hearing Impaired

WE all know and are aware of guide dogs and the benefits that they bring to the vision impaired.

However, not all of us are aware of the other service dogs in our community making real differences to the lives of those they assist.

Alongside guide dogs for the blind are the Australian Lions Hearing Dogs (ALHD) and companion dogs.

The ALHD dogs work with the hearing impaired in our community.

One in six Australians suffer from some form of hearing loss and this number continues to rise.

Of these people, approximately 400,000 are dealing daily with the isolating challenges of severe or profound deafness.

This means, the services we deliver through producing professionally trained Hearing Assistance Dogs are needed now more than ever.

ALHD dogs are provided to Australians in need, free of charge.

Soldiers Point Lions Club has been working with Australian Lions Hearing Dogs to assist one of our local residents.

Sharon Blunt of the Lions Club Of Soldiers Point told News Of The Area, “This program has taken over 18 months and finally this week Maxie was delivered to Leonie.

“Due to COVID and border closures the delivery had been delayed but now Maxie is working with Leonie to give her greater independence.”

Deafness and hearing loss isolates and severely impacts

a sufferer’s connection to family and the wider community.

“ALHD provides Hearing Assistance Dogs that help people who are experiencing severe to profound hearing loss lead more independent , connected, secure and enjoyable lives,” she said.

Soldiers Point Lions Club donated $2000 to the training of Maxie and will work with Leonie and Maxie over the next 12 weeks to support the ongoing training of Maxie to respond to smoke alarms, oven alarms and door knocking.

Soldiers Point Lions Club is always striving to support our local community and this program will be so important to Leonie, as she and Maxie become valuable partners in navigating day-to-day life more safely.

House damaged after car crash

Search for driver after car crashes into house in Raymond Terrace

A RAYMOND Terrace house has been significantly damaged after a car crashed into it on Friday night.

About 8.45pm on Friday

12 February 2021, a silver Nissan Maxima sedan left the road and crashed through a brick front fence, before hitting the house on Alma

Street, Raymond Terrace.

Both the driver and front seat passenger of the vehicle ran from the scene prior to the arrival of police.

A couple who were inside at the time of the crash were not injured, however, the home was significantly damaged.

NSW Fire and Rescue attended to assess the house and an exclusion zone was established.

As inquiries continue, officers from Port StephensHunter Police District are appealing to the public for information to identify the driver.

In particular, police would like to hear from anyone who might have dash cam footage

of the incident or who might have been driving around Raymond Terrace at the time, to come forward.

WESTPAC Helicopter Wills Week Fundraiser

FOR many getting their affairs in order is something that can be put off for another day.

However, during Wills Week we are reminded that having a valid will can save a great deal of difficulty for those left behind when we pass away.

“If we do the work together we save time and of course it reduces costs as well,” said Minister Reynolds.

The Prime Minister has stated he is focused on getting Australian’s into jobs, and funding the Newcastle Airport runway seems like an opportunity to do just that.

The runway project is anticipated to create over 4,000 local jobs and it is anticipated to add $12 billion to the regional economy.

INTERNATIONAL flights to and from Williamtown Airport have been a longheld dream for many.

However limitations in the runway have been one issue that has hampered the delivery of more flights.

There have been many plans for the extension of the runway to accommodate larger commercial flights however investment has been one reason why the planes have not been accommodated to date.

Clean Up Australia Day

THIS year is different, however we are still being asked to dig in, don our gloves and pick up rubbish while participating in the grass roots movement Clean Up Australia Day. The question is “How Will You Step Up?” What was started thirty years ago, by an "average Australian bloke" who had a simple idea to make a difference in his own backyard has now become the nation's largest communitybased environmental event.

There are already clean ups booked in and around Port Stephens.

Bagnalls Beach, Shoal Bay Beach, Fingal Bay North and Nelson Bay Marina have clean-ups scheduled on the peninsula.

With Raymond Terrace Tidy Towns organising one clean up and another with the Scouts at River Front Park also set for a Clean Up. In Medowie it’s the Medowie Mumpreneurs that are carrying the banner along with Pacific Dunes Golf Course.

Anna Bay has a clean up at the proposed site for the All Abilities Playground one at the Ocean Avenue toilet block and another at the Anna Bay Scout Hall.

Of course more clean ups are being registered with Clean Up Australia Day in the lead up to the event on 7 March.

Schools and Businesses are being called on to participate in the event which literally sees thousands of tonnes of rubbish removed from our environment every

year.

Kelly Hammond of Anna Bay has registered a Clean Up Australia Day Event at the proposed site for the All Abilities Park at Anna Bay. Kelly participated in Clean Up Australia Day at Anna Bay in 2020 and saw first hand the difference that can be made when the community simply picks up the rubbish.

She told News Of The Area, “Anyone can register and I would encourage as many locals to register an event as possible as numbers at each individual clean up are limited due to COVID-19 restrictions.”

If you don’t want to be the one to register an event you can join a local one on the Clean Up Australia Day website at www. cleanupaustraliaday.org.au.

Making the NDIS Easier One Member at a Time

IT is not always easy to find a place where your voice is heard and you can hear from others with similar experience.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme can be a confusing and complicated system for those navigating it for the first time.

Luckily for Port Stephens there’s a new group started to help not only navigate but also support and share.

It’s called Port Stephens NDIS Community and their aim is to make the NDIS as straightforward as their name.

The two brains behind the new group are local business owners Nikita Austin and Andrew Thorley.

Through their work in the disability sector they became aware of a need that wasn’t being met.

“We created the group to be a place for people who

either have NDIS or are looking at getting NDIS funding and create a place for them to connect with other NDIS people in the area.” Nikita says.

“We know the NDIS and NDIA can be quite confusing at times so we wanted to create a place where people can ask questions, have discussions and can network.

“We both have our own

businesses in Port Stephens which service NDIS participants and we were planning on doing NDIS information sessions.

Our biggest concern was that there was nowhere for them to connect or network with people.”

Certainly the initial response to the group has shown the need and want in the community for it.

Within the first 24 hours the group had grown to over 100 with many messages of support and encouragement.

Nikita and Andrew have big plans for the future too.

Whilst the group is Facebook based at the moment there are already plans for offline events with details to be released as they become available.

Port Parkinson’s Support Show True Grit!

NEVER underestimate the resolve and determination of those in the community who seem to be going through some tough times.

That’s the message the Port Stephens Parkinson’s Support Group (PSPSG) wishes to deliver to the wider community as they prepare to meet today at the Tomaree Library and Community Centre.

The group holds exercise sessions after each meeting which usually involves getting participants moving with a bit of pad work with the gloves on!

Group Leader Bob Crampton believes the fitness regime not only helps keep the body active, but can even relieve symptoms associated with Parkinson’s.

“Exercise is so important and can be fun as well for our members,” said Bob.

“They’re a tough bunch and show great determination in getting active after our meetings.

“I’d hate to meet some of them in an alleyway with the glove work I’ve seen!”

Guest speaker will be Evelyn Collins, a neurological nurse from John Hunter Hospital.

Evelyn will deliver key information about Parkinson’s for those suffering from the disease, as well as help their families and friends stay informed on the latest

research.

Kate Washington calls for public high school Medowie’s missing public school in Parliament

THIS week, Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington spoke on behalf of the region in Parliament, calling for action on a Medowie Public High School.

The need for a Medowie Public High School has been a long-running issue, one which has been discussed with the Department of Education regularly over the years.

Kate Washington spoke to Parliament of the plans for a public secondary in western Port Stephens that had been formulated in the past, however the government has still not implemented these plans.

“We were told by the Department that when student numbers reached a tipping point, the plan would kick in.

“Since that plan nothing has happened despite Medowie’s population

growing exponentially,” said Kate Washington.

The land that the Department of Education purchased in 1983 for the purpose of building a public high school, is still vacant and has not been utilised.

“The Berejiklian Government is progressing plans without telling the truth to local families.

“I’ve called on the Coalition Government to come clean with our community about their plans for public education in our area.

“If the Government has no plan to ever deliver a public high school in Medowie, they should tell that to the families of Medowie, Karuah, Salt Ash and the Tilligerry Peninsula.

“They deserve the truth.

“It’s a core responsibility of the government to deliver public education where it’s needed.

“It’s shameful that the Coalition Government has ignored the pleas from our community for a decade.”

Stockton cricketers to represent Newcastle

NICK Foster and Jeff Goninan from the Stockton and Northern Districts Cricket Club have been selected to represent Newcastle in the NSW Country Championships Final on 21 February.

This is an excellent achievement, with further accolades going to Nick Foster for also being selected as Captain for the team.

The Newcastle team will go up against the Riverina team, playing at Seiffert Oval later this month.

"The club is quickly becoming the envy of other cricket clubs in the region.

“We have top level facilities and a strong coaching team which is certainly attractive to young players,” Nick Foster said.

Foster who is also the NSW Country Bush Blues

Captain, will once again skipper the Newcastle team with the hope of repeating last seasons’ NSW Country Final performance in which Newcastle defeated Greater Illawarra, a match in which Foster took five wickets.

Goninan returns to the Newcastle team after a stint in the Perth competition with Fremantle where he was sharing the changeroom with Australian representatives Shaun Marsh, Mitchell Marsh, Jhye Richardson and Ashton Turner.

"My time at Fremantle was fantastic and I learnt a lot,” Goninan said.

“I’m hoping to be able to pass on some of my knowledge and experience to the younger players at Stockton and Northern Districts" Best of luck is wished to the Stockton cricketers.

Life on the glorious Caribbean island of Saint Marie should be a breeze. There’s a rainforest, plenty of gorgeous fishing spots and beaches as far as the eye can see. Mind you, the crime rate is cause for concern – there seems to be a suspicious death almost every week to keep DI Jack Mooney (Ardal O’Hanlon, pictured) and the team busy.

This week, in “Tour de Murder”, it’s a cycling crash that is troubling the widowed detective – some loose threads (literally, a scrap of lycra) found near the body of Tour des Antilles favourite Xavier Prince lead Jack to suspect his death was no accident – but who wanted him dead? It’s the perfect Saturday night whodunit.

Some quiz shows demand broad general knowledge, others skills in maths or riddles, and some, well... they don’t really require much more than the nerve to put yourself on national television to gamble with the equal chance of making a fool of yourself or laughing all the way to the bank. The Cube is in the latter category, where contestants try to complete a seemingly easy task inside a Perspex cube for the viewing pleasure of the nail-biting audience. And it is precisely the added difficulty to otherwise simple tasks that makes this show – with a handsome prize pool – so infuriating and so captivating. Host Andy Lee (pictured above right) is along for the laughs.

IT’S not the first time this question has divided a household! In our increasingly hot, dry land, the question of whether it’s irresponsible to fill a bath with precious water is frequently asked. If you believe your home is ‘forever’ and a bath is simply incompatible with your lifestyle, omitting it in favour of a double shower, dual vanity or more builtin storage may make the decision easy.

However, if you have young children, a bath is still considered a necessity and should you be thinking of selling, even if not right now, excluding a bathtub will limit your market.

There’s also the ‘lifestyle’ aspect to consider, especially if yours is a high-end home where a family bathroom is expected to have a bath, the inclusion of which actually defines ‘full bathroom’. If a bathtub already exists, or there is space for one, my advice would be yes, include one. There are many affordable, space-saver bathtubs available allowing you to combine style, price and functionality without compromising environmental awareness. Besides, there is much to be said for the benefits of an occasional relaxing soak after a long day!

A friend always gives me her handme-downs, saying, ‘This was too good to throw out, but I don’t want it anymore.’ Now I am storing clothes, old furniture, linen and half sets of dinnerware that I don’t want either.

What your friend is really saying is, ‘This item takes too much effort to get rid of, and you have “kind and naive friend” written on your forehead, so I’m making it your problem.’

She’s probably already tried Buy, Swap and Sell and, after haggling with locals who want to barter over a pair of once-used soccer boots, she’s emotionally exhausted.

You’ve become a very handy ‘Open All Hours’ Op Shop while at the same time allowing your friend to feel she’s scoring points to be used at a later date.

She gets all the virtue and you get seven splades, three chipped plates, a quilt cover with a dubious stain and a wonky coffee table that you’ll end up putting out in your next council cleanup.

I guess the problem here is that you’ve accepted these unwanted goods on the first occasion and you’ve set a precedent.

It is a bit like being the unwilling recipient of emotional garbage that then builds up in your subconscious while the offender has had the equivalent of a brain detox and feels refreshed.

I would suggest that next time your friend turns up with a car full of seconds, stop her before she starts unloading and say, ‘Look, it is very kind of you, but I really have no room to put a one-eyed rocking horse, a rusted wind chime and a Ken Done print covered in mould. I’m actually decluttering as well. If you have time for a cup of tea, I could show you what’s on offer.’

Then, simply present her with all her rejected items from the last few years.

Council commits to completing Fern Bay shared pathway

PORT Stephens Council has this week committed to the completion of the shared pathway in Fern Bay, the biggest project planned for the Port town that borders Newcastle.

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer said while part of the path has been constructed, it’s now time to complete the missing link.

“Safety for children and the growing population is hugely important to the Fern Bay community, and to this Council.

“Plus, shared pathways are a great way to encourage healthy activities like walking, running and cycling while improving accessibility for

people on mobility scooters.

“We’re already building part of this path and it’s time to finish the job,” Mayor Palmer said.

The completion of the pathway extends along Nelson Bay Road and will see a connection to the City of Newcastle’s path extending all the way to Stockton.

The new pathway will be funded using a combination of developer contributions and funding from the Port Stephens 2020 budget allocation.

Port Stephens Pro Local surfers to contest

Pro Surf Series – will see the return of professional surfing THE 2021 Port Stephens Pro in Port Stephens with the – stop two on the Vissla NSW three day event being held

from the 21 February – 23 February 2021.

Athletes will compete on their regional QS tour in hopes of qualifying for the Challenger Series (CS), and

ultimately the Championship Tour, which will reduce the economic pressure on surfers and their sponsors, as well as provide increased opportunities to celebrate local stars.

The local Bay Area Boardriders wildcard is

Jasmine Sampson.

Surfing NSW CEO Luke Madden believes the Port Stephens area is perfectly suited for an event of this calibre.

“Over the years we have been extremely spoilt with awesome wave quality in the Port Stephens region and it’s an absolute joy to return to the area after a turbulent year in 2020. I would like to thank the local surfing contingent and the other event stakeholders for welcoming us back in 2021.”

Local surfer Josh Stretton told News Of The Area, “I am so stoked to be competing on home ground and to be able to sleep in my own bed.

“Often when competing it’s camping or cabins.

“I’m hoping for solid swell offshore and clean so all the competitors can see how good the surfing is here,” he said.

Toxin Truth hurting the environment

PORT Stephens Council is encouraging residents and visitors to take responsibility for their rubbish by putting it in a bin or taking it with them as part of a statewide Don’t be a Tosser! Campaign.

The toxic truth is that litter is toxic to the environment.

Council’s Waste Management Coordinator Chris Cannard said, “Port Stephens is known for its incredible natural beauty — and we want to keep it that way.”

Port Stephens local Joanna Atherfold Finn sits on the Plastic Free Port Stephens committee and is Co- Author of the groundbreaking book Plastic Free.

She told News Of The Area, “One misconception is that plastic breaks down over time, but it just breaks up into smaller pieces that may end up in our waterways and be unwittingly ingested by birds and marine animals.

“There is also a lot of confusion around terms like degradable, biodegradable and compostable.

“People can think they are doing the right thing, but it’s important to read the fine print,” she said.

“The Don’t be a Tosser! campaign is a reminder that throwing your rubbish anywhere other than in a bin is unacceptable.

Mr Cannard went on to say, “More than $180 million a year is spent managing litter in NSW,” he said.

Landcare and other groups around Port Stephens spend hours volunteering year round, picking up after others while initiatives like Clean Up Australia Day and Sea Shelters annual dive around the Nelson Bay Marina make a significant impact on reducing litter in

our environment in one day.

Mr Cannard said, “Cigarette butts continue to be by far the most littered item in NSW, making up 43% of all litter.

“During a recent local litter check in Nelson Bay, we uncovered over 480 cigarette butts in a 12 metre survey area alone.

“Across 20 sites at Raymond Terrace and Nelson Bay, we found 1449 cigarette butts littered.

“These ultimately end up polluting our waterways, so it’s really important they go in the bin.

“It’s up to all of us to take responsibility for our litter and take a bit more pride in our place,” he said.

Lia Periera of Sea Shelter and Irukandji Shark and Ray Centre; winners of the Port Stephens 2021 Australia Day award for Environmental contribution to the region; said, “Cigarette butts and the leftover tobacco attached contain thousands of toxic chemicals and are extremely bad for fish.

“The smaller the waterway the worse the concentration of toxins, furthermore, if cigarette butts are consumed dry they can soak up the water in the bird’s stomach and swell up.

“We find so many cigarette buts in our clean ups, and it breaks my heart seeing people still to this day tossing them on the ground,” she said.

The Don’t be a Tosser! campaign is part of the NSW Government’s comprehensive anti-littering program.

It aims to change behaviours and reduce litter by sending a clear message that littering is unacceptable.

AT the recently held regional athletics comp at the Maitland track, 6 of our athletes qualified for the NSW Little Athletics State Championships to be held on 20 and 21 March.

Those athletes were Maebel Colley u/9 age group 70m, 100m, 200m and long jump.

Mia Macdonald u/10 age group in the 70m, 100m, 60m hurdles and long jump.

Kade Lawson u/10 boys

and Melody Tibbs u/10 and u/12 high jump.

Ailleesha Oudshoorn U/12 age group for Triple jump, Long jump and 80m hurdles.

Aileesha broke the regional record for the 80m hurdles in the final of the race.

And also did a 22cm pb in her triple jump comp.

In the teams event it was the other half of the presidency that saw the trophy lifted with copresident Luke Bartlett,

Ryan Williams, Jayden Hill and Josh Bergsma beating out Kurtis Herman, Greg Hamer, Zane Clifford and Kale George in the final.

In the U9’s young guru Max Evans took 1st place ahead of Josh Leeman in 2nd, Tonaya Brown was 3rd and Jessie O’Toole came in 4th.

In the U12’s super grom Harlem Stone took 1st, Noah Bartlett came in 2nd, Tom O’Toole 3rd and Nate Goodwin rounded it out in 4th.

After the day on the sand all surfers, spectators and the wider Port Stephens community came together at the Anna Bay Tavern for the presentation and the Boardriders first social night of the year.

The whole crew were entertained with live music, lucky door prizes and raffles which saw a custom shred sled go up for grabs.

“We’re stoked with the amount of support we had for our first event of 2021 and can’t wait for the next one!” said Buey.

FOR the Bay Area Boardriders 2020 had been a challenge.

With COVID-19 restricting events and almost forcing the cancellation of the entire competitive year the club was looking forward to working towards bigger and brighter things for 2021.

On Saturday the club delivered just that with their annual Mystery Teams Event that saw 12 teams come together to celebrate Port Stephens’ surfing culture in an all-inclusive environment.

The day also saw a whole new generation of keen surfers get into the salt with an U9’s and U12’s division running alongside the main event.
