By Tara CAMPBELL LEADER of the Australian Labor Party, Anthony Albanese, together with local Labor members of Parliament have announced action on the GP shortage crisis in the Hunter.

The team will be making the region a Distribution Priority Area (DPA), providing the whole region with access to the Bonded Medical Program and overseas trained doctors.

Labor leaders say the Morrison Government’s decision to reclassify parts of this area as a metropolitan area without a GP shortage has meant it is harder than ever for people in our community to see a doctor.

Police conducted a search of Donald Street and located a number of items, which were seized for forensic examination.

A crime scene was established and examined by specialist forensic officers.

As inquiries into the incident continue, police believe there are witnesses to the incident who have not yet come forward and are encouraging anyone with information, or who has dashcam footage, to contact Crime Stoppers.

“The Morrison Government has spent years denying the crisis they helped create and has done nothing to resolve it,” the Hunter Labor team consisting of Pat Conroy, Meryl Swanson and Sharon Claydon said.

Labor initiated the Senate Inquiry into GP shortages and while it is ongoing, evidence presented demonstrates there is a chronic and severe GP shortage in the Hunter.

In their submission to the inquiry, the Hunter New England and Central Coast Primary Health Network stated, “workforce shortage, geographical distribution and sustainability are key determinants of access to health care for the community”.

This commitment follows Labor’s promise to reverse over $500,000 of annual Liberal cuts to the Hunter’s GP Access After Hours service.

“This is a vital service which sees 50,000 patients a year and provides 70,000 telephone consultations, alleviating pressure on overstretched hospitals.

“It is estimated to save the broader health system almost $22 million per year,” the team said.

News Of The Area contacted Liberal candidate for Paterson Brooke Vitnell for comment, but did not receive a response prior to publication.

The report states that Janice was very close to her children and she had spoken to them about wanting Reeves to move out of her home.

The relationship reportedly ended in or about April 2018, however Reeves remained living in Janice’s house until he apparently agreed to leave a couple of months later.

On 4 July 2018, Reeves organised for a removalist truck to attend the premises and he removed most of his property from Janice’s house to a storage unit.

Due to breathing and mobility issues, Janice lived mostly in the front living room of her house, where she slept in a reclining chair, unable to lie in a bed.

On the night of 7 July 2018, a neighbour recognised Reeves’ car parked in Janice’s driveway, with Reeves seated in the front seat.

Two minutes later flames were seen coming from the side of Janice’s house, and a large ‘boom’ sound was heard.

A series of ‘boom’ sounds were then heard coming from the house, which was eventually engulfed by flame.

After neighbours attempted to assist, the fire was extinguished by Fire and Rescue NSW, and Janice’s body was recovered from inside the front lounge room.

Three nine-kilogram gas bottles were located inside the premises, one in the lounge room where Janice was found, and the other two in bedrooms.

Three metal fuel containers were located in a room at the rear of the premises, and a further gas bottle and fuel container was located in Janice’s vehicle that was parked under the carport.

Later that day, Reeves was involved in a car accident

on the Pacific Highway, which is thought to have been an attempt to suicide.

He was arrested by Police and taken by Ambulance to John Hunter Hospital for treatment for his injuries.

On the 9 July 2018, Reeves was charged by Police, inter alia, with the murder of Janice.

On 22 April 2019, whilst being held on remand at Goulburn Correctional Facility, Reeves was found unconscious in his cell and transported to Canberra Hospital, where he died on 17 May 2019.

At the date of his death Reeves had not entered any plea to, or been convicted of, the charges laid against him concerning Janice’s death.

On behalf of The Coroners Court of New South Wales, Magistrate Brett Shields offered “sincere and respectful condolences to Janice’s family”.

After the release of the Coroner’s report last week, Janice’s daughter Vanessa told News Of The Area, “Thankyou to the Police and Coroners office for their efforts.

“Thank you to all that tried to help on that dreadful night.”

Death of Janice Garrett deemed homicide THE death of Raymond Terrace woman Janice Garrett on 7 July 2018 has been deemed a homicide by Magistrate Brett Shields, Deputy State Coroner.

Janice was 76-years-old and living with a disability when she died as a result of a fire at her home in Rosemount Drive, Raymond Terrace.

The Coroners Court of New South Wales’ findings, released on March 8, reveal that prior to her passing, Janice had formed a relationship with Ronald Reeves, known as John, who lived with Janice in her home at Raymond Terrace.

Targeted literacy and numeracy support for schools

By Marian SAMPSON IT’S a return to basics with the Government supporting literacy and numeracy improvements across all public schools.

All NSW public schools will benefit from high quality support aimed at improving educational outcomes for their students, with a strong focus on lifting reading and numeracy results.

Minister for Education and Early Learning Sarah Mitchell said the targeted support, a central aspect of the School Success Model, means schools receive high impact programs and resources tailored to their unique needs.

“The success of every student is at the heart of the NSW education system, which is why it’s so important we provide better support for all schools, and especially those that need it most.

“Ultimately the model holds every level of the Department, from the Secretary to executives to directors and principals, accountable and responsible for each and every one of our NSW public school students receiving the best educational outcomes possible.

“Every single public school has been identified by the Department to receive universal, guided, or strategic support, based on a range of metrics,” Ms Mitchell said.

Through the School Success Model: 259 schools are receiving strategic support which includes

intensive help to uplift performance in reading, numeracy and attendance; 872 schools are receiving targeted guidance to support the use of universal resources for a focus area at schools who require support; and all schools can access the Universal Resources Hub with the latest evidence-led learning resources and tools categorised by identified focus areas.

“This year, more than 1000 schools are receiving targeted support to improve student reading and numeracy results and lift their performance, helping around 500,000 students.

“The School Success Model will drive systemic improvement; it will champion our best schools and help those that are struggling.

“Support ranges from looking at whether teaching practices and learning programs reflect evidencebased best practice, to

sustainability.

Independent and not-for-profit, their focus is to engage communities to make NSW the least littered state in Australia, transforming littering behaviour to create a beautiful and more sustainable environment.

Emergency Services Update

IT’S time for your weekly emergency services update.

Backyard Fire Safety As the season changes, many are looking forward to enjoying Autumn by using our backyards more.

Soldiers Point RFS are issuing the following advice for those wanting to have a backyard cooking fire in a safe way. ● Only ever burn clean wood (like you would purchase from the service station). ● Never burn vegetation or rubbish or old timber furniture or treated timber; these things can be highly toxic for you and your family to breathe in. ● Always make sure you have plenty of water on hand to extinguish your fire with when finished. ● Many unplanned fires have started by smaller fires being left burning. ● Never leave your fire unattended and ensure to contain your fire inside a fire pit or a non-flammable structure such as brick or rock.

Hazmat Incident On 9 March, Fire and

Raymond Terrace Fire At approximately 8:15PM on Tuesday 8 March a 49-yearold male received minor injuries (smoke inhalation) when his unit caught fire.

The male was removed from the unit by neighbours.

Emergency services were contacted with NSW Fire and Rural fire service units attending extinguishing the fire, containing the fire to within the one unit.

A cooking pan containing oil, left unattended, had ignited, engulfing the surrounding kitchen bench.

The fire has been classified as an accident and no further investigation is proposed.

Marine Rescue Last Sunday, the Radio Base at Marine Rescue Port Stephens received a request for assistance from a 11m motor cruiser who was having engine issues 1nm SE of Tomaree Headland.

Flood Emergency Services Update

AS the ongoing wet weather causes flooding in Port Stephens, there are a number of important emergency services updates.

Flood Recovery Scams There have been many reports of scammers impersonating NSW SES asking for donations to assist with the floods.

NSW SES wishes to inform readers that they do not actively seek donations over the phone.

For anyone wishing to donate to any flood relief cause, please ensure that you receive certification from

any organisations seeking donations.

Sandbag Collection For those requiring sandbags to assist with flooding, these can be collected from Port Stephens SES Unit at 31 Rees James, Raymond Terrace and Tomaree SES Unit at 55A Sandy Point Road, Corlette.

There are both pre-filled sandbags to assist those unable to fill their own as well as DIY, with sandbags, sand and a shovel for those wanting to fill their own.

Flood Safety Due to the current severe weather warnings, emergency services are issuing the

following advice.

In the case of emergencies, call 000.

If you need assistance with weather related situations- tree down, flooding, require sandbags etc. call SES on 13 25 000.

If power lines are down, this is classified as an emergency.

Do not drive through flood waters and only travel if you must.

Deployment Many local emergency services have been on deployments this week to assist with flood relief and clean-up efforts in Northern NSW. Fire and Rescue Salamander Bay are one of many stations which have been deployed.

The crew made their way down to the dock to prepare PS31 for her short trip to the DV’s location.

Skipper Robert had PS31 on location in very quick time and the crew soon had the motor cruiser under tow.

The four people on board were happy to see PS31 as the light was fading, with the crew returning by 10:30PM. This week they have had two teams assisting in a number of ways including house cleanouts in Woodburn, natural disaster clean-up efforts and ongoing support for the strained emergency services throughout the region.

Flood Operations This week the Port Stephens SES Unit have been hard at work in the area after many communities have been isolated by floodwaters.

From 7AM on 11 March, the SES flood boats were brought out to transport essential workers including nurses and teachers and others requiring essential transport (medical procedures) out of the area.

Throughout the day, flood boats transported critical supplies and food bank packages to people in isolated properties in the community and people and animals needing care.

The 2022 International Women’s Day Scholarship recipients are: Beth Innes | Fern Bay Beth is the Director of Sports 4 All, a not-for-profit organisation that works to increase the participation of women and girls in sport.

Beth’s aim is to introduce Sports 4 All to more sporting clubs within Port Stephens, assisting them to create an

inclusive and family-friendly culture that supports female recruitment and participation.

She also aspires to work with local community organisations to encourage more vulnerable women to get involved in sport.

Shannon Whyte | Lemon Tree Passage As an Aboriginal woman, Shannon hopes to inspire the next generation of young

people, particularly young Aboriginal women.

Shannon’s aim is to build on her career in project management by undertaking further leadership training and mentoring.

She plans to use her leadership skills to assist local community organisations that work with women, Aboriginal people, or vulnerable residents.

NORTH Arm Cove hosted their annual International Women’s Day event on Tuesday 8 March, a fundraiser for International Women Australia.

2022 was the 24th year of the fundraising event, with over $80,000 raised by community members for the cause.

International Women’s Day is a global day of celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women, whilst also raising awareness of women who are disadvantaged due to poverty, domestic violence, little or no education, or opportunity to improve their situation.

Hosted by Jann Peeters, two remarkable local women shared their stories amongst a packed room enjoying a delicious morning tea.

“Today is about the celebration of ordinary women living ordinary lives and achieving extraordinary goals,” Jan said.

“Every woman has a story of survival, love, heartbreak, disappointment

and achievement and we just need to take time to listen to those stories.”

The first speaker of the day was Jan Winn, a local Tea Gardens lady whose great grandparents came out from England in 1877 and settled in the region.

Jan shared a story about local history, her process of researching family history, publishing her own books and her dedication to hard work and supporting the community.

were oyster farmers in Wobbygong Bay before starting the Oyster Hut on the waterfront in Marine Drive.

After a morning tea of donated cakes, slices and everything in between and the sharing of stories amongst tables, the second speaker for the day, Yolanta Tomaszewski, a North Arm Cove resident who escaped Poland in 1981 addressed the room.

Yolanta was born in Poland and lived through the hard times of the Polish United Worker’s Party, backed by the Russian Communist party rule over Poland.

Yolanta shared a snapshot

of her life and her challenging journey to flee Poland and emigrate to Australia, inspiring the room of women.

She shared her story of hard work, heartbreaking times and most importantly, her story of survival amongst all odds.

Every woman sat silently, jaw-dropped, whilst Yola passionately spoke of her experience (and even received a standing ovation from the room after her speech).

Boost For Businesses Supporting ADF

WITH Williamtown Airport serving as a base for the RAAF, Port Stephens is about to see a boost in businesses serving defence working in the region.

The Morrison Government is demonstrating its commitment to supporting the growth of one of Australia’s most important industries by launching a major campaign highlighting a generation of jobs in Australia’s defence industries.

The ‘In our own backyard’ campaign will begin on television, radio and across social media over the coming days and weeks.

We have certainly seen the Australian Defence Force (ADF) contribute here ‘in our own backyard’ in recent times.

It was the ADF that assisted during the Black Summer Bushfires, in nursing homes and beside the Police throughout COVID, and now again they are rolling their sleeves up to help our most vulnerable during the floods.

But the ADF can’t do what they do without the support of the many businesses that supply them with products and services.

The campaign highlights that the skills Australians

have displayed for generations building ‘stuff’ in their backyards are now in great demand to fill the jobs in our growing defence industries, which supply the ADF with the products and services it needs to protect Australia and its

national interests.

Minister for Defence Industry Melissa Price said Australia’s defence capability required robust, resilient and internationally competitive defence industries.

“We must be able to build

what we need at home to defend ourselves when we need it and the COVID-19 pandemic has shone a light on just how critical that is,” Minister Price said.

“The Morrison Government is investing an unprecedented

Minister Price said Australia’s many defence industries had been built on Australian creativity and ingenuity and those skills were critical as the nation sought to stay a step ahead of adversaries who would seek to do us harm in a deteriorating strategic environment.

“During the next decade and beyond, this exciting and expanding sector will

rely upon a workforce with skills in design, engineering, manufacturing, project management and logistics, as well as all aspects of support services from training and simulation to ICT support,” Minister Price said.

“That is the focus of our new campaign.

“From large multi-national companies to medium and small Aussie businesses, the creativity and ingenuity on display right across Australia points to the fact that there are many opportunities for skilled Australians to find fulfilling, well-paid jobs.

“We must ensure we have the most cutting-edge technology available to the men and women of the ADF.” Minister Price said she was excited to promote the career opportunities in the new campaign, which would build awareness of the extensive opportunities across a range of sectors that contribute to Australia’s defence capability.

“There will be fantastic opportunities for workers across Australia over the coming decades and we must ensure we harness the skills we have in our own backyard to fill the jobs in our growing and important defence industries,” Minister Price said.

Council goes green in 100% renewable energy deal PORT Stephens Council will be powered by the sun under a landmark agreement that will see 100 percent solar energy supplied to more than 1940 streetlights, libraries, sports fields and other sites across the region.

Council is one of 25 NSW councils to sign onto the $180 million retail renewable energy deal, brokered by the Southern Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (SSROC) with ZEN Energy Pty Ltd, to supply electricity from three solar farms.

Mayor Ryan Palmer said the agreement is an important step in Council’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2025.

“Climate change is a

significant global challenge and we are proud to join with 24 other councils in working towards a brighter and cleaner future for our communities and our environment,” Mayor Palmer said.

“We’ve opted for 100% renewable energy under the deal, which will significantly reduce our carbon footprint by supplying green electricity to more than 1790 residential streetlights and 142 Council owned and managed sites including holiday parks, libraries, car parks, aquatic centres and the Raymond Terrace administration building.

“Buying as a group we’ve also been able to secure better electricity rates and that

means savings we can reinvest into creating a sustainable, liveable Port Stephens.”

The deal lasts four and a half years with an option for Council to extend for a further four years.

Asset Section Manager John Maretich said the agreement compliments a number of initiatives already implemented as part of Council’s carbon neutral target.

“Through education, innovation and the use of energy-efficient technology, we’re reducing our carbon emissions as we work towards carbon neutrality by 2025,” Mr Maretich said.

“So far we’ve installed solar photovoltaic systems at sixteen Council sites with more on the way.

“We’ve also replaced more than 1750 residential

streetlights with LEDs as part of an LED Replacement Program with Ausgrid, added solar pool pre-heating at all three of our aquatic centres and installed energy-saving lighting at numerous sporting

This week marks the halfway point of this enjoyable homegrown crime drama, which unabashedly taps into tropes and formulas. After all, there’s a reason why the disgraced ex-cop and eccentric private investigator are recurring characters; it is gratifying to immerse in the motivations and stories of those who step out of mainstream society. The scenic, unforgiving setting in outback NT doesn’t hurt, either, adding another sense of otherness to the mystery. Tonight our American ex-cop, Ted (Thomas Jane), and PI with a shady past, Amanda (Nicole Chamoun) find their investigation getting more difficult, just as Ted receives some bombshell news from his wife Kelly (Radha Mitchell).

The world feels like a crazy place at the moment.

But if tuning into a series that helps you forget the headlines and news is a high priority, this American science fiction drama could be your remedy. Just beware: it’ll probably make your head spin. So far, the story of two families’ lives torn apart by a massive sinkhole in LA – which also happens to be a portal – has either frazzled or thrilled viewers. But it’s so over the top, weakly acted and confusingly written that it’s a sure-fire distraction. Tonight, a super storm causes chaos, while Gavin (Eoin Macken) embarks on a journey into his past, which might be the key to saving his family in the present. It’s exhausting, in a diverting way.

MEMBERS of Fingal Bay Probus Club have been blessed with sunshine as they gathered for some favourite events in recent weeks.

A wine tasting meeting was held in Geraldine and Roy Jeffery’s garden, giving Roy a chance to demonstrate his barbecuing skills.

On another day, a group visited Margaret Marlin’s home for morning tea with an abundance of homebaked delights on offer.

To add to the occasion there was a surprise online visit from Jenny Wright, who is obviously enjoying life at her new home in the country.

“Walking for pleasure is always a good start to any day and a recent trip along the Shoal Bay foreshore towards Tomaree Mountain proved delightful – and so was the coffee and conversation afterwards at Zenith Café,” she said.

Octopod Grant for Community Arts Centre

Buckle up on buses

PORT Stephens students travelling to and from school can now buckle up with mandatory seat belts installed in every dedicated school bus in the region.

As part of the NSW Government’s Rural and Regional Bus Seatbelt Program, seatbelts have been delivered on the entire fleet of almost 2,600 dedicated school buses in rural and regional NSW, with 1,145 new buses installed with seat belts and 883 existing buses retrofitted

From 2016 to 2020, 35 percent of all bus passengers injured in crashes were children aged five to sixteen years and one in four bus passengers injured were on a school bus.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW Paul Toole said the $237 million seatbelt program would give regional students, their families and entire communities the reassurance that travelling to and from school is now safer than ever.

“Country and regional kids

have to travel longer distances than those in the city, and we want to make those journeys as safe as possible,” Mr Toole said.

“Seatbelts save lives – and I’m proud to deliver on our commitment to fit more than 2,500 buses with seat belts to help keep some of our most precious road users safe.”

Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell said the seatbelt program is great news for regional school students.

“Student safety is so important, whether that’s on the way to school or after

Seafoam hits beaches

BEACHES were covered in one of the biggest occurrences of seafoam that has been seen in living memory after the wild weather which hit the NSW coast over the past week.

Marine Biologist Ryan Pierara of Irukandji Shark and Ray Encounters told News Of The Area, “The recent seafoam observed along Australia’s east coast was caused due to the heavy rains releasing organics and pollutants from the paddocks and houses flooded, mixing with the powerful seas creating the foam.

“The foam is formed from

air, water, and surfactants rigorously mixing.

“Surfactants are a kind of sticky molecule that clings to the surface between water and air.

Minister supports innovative approach to pothole management NSW Government Customer Service Minister Victor Dominello is supportive of a new approach to manage and repair potholes.

On 11 October 2021, nowCouncillor Leah Anderson committed to implementing cameras on garbage trucks if elected as Mayor.

This week, Minister Dominello told reporters that he is supportive of this approach.

“I’m keen to explore technology that uses a camera or sensor fitted to garbage trucks to detect the damage and send the details to a shared,

This support follows Cr Anderson’s campaign commitment, and after falling short by just 400 votes for Mayor, Cr Anderson is still strongly advocating for the Port Stephens Council to implement an innovative management plan for potholes.

“We know this is a common-sense way to identify potholes early, and make sure the major ones can be filled as quickly as possible.

“Locals in Port Stephens want potholes filled quicker and for the biggest, most dangerous ones to be prioritised, and this is the perfect way to ensure that is able to be done in the

longer term,” Cr Anderson said.

Cr Anderson says that in the past, this idea has not been supported, but now given the Minister’s support, she hopes for the best.

“I’ve brought this idea up in many forums with my fellow Councillors, and it’s a shame that it keeps getting shot down.

“Now that the Customer Service Minister has given the thumbs up to the idea, maybe Port Stephens Council will finally get on board,” she said.

Also supporting this concept is Central Ward Councillor Jason Wells who is adamant that this approach should be investigated.

“The state of local roads

is one of the most complained about things in Port Stephens,” Cr Wells said.

“I have been in touch with Councillors in Queensland where this system is already in place, to gain a better understanding of the costs and benefits, and its success.

“There is no reason why this shouldn’t be investigated here - locals deserve quicker fixes to local roads and this will deliver that.”

Cr Anderson has submitted a motion to the 12 April Council meeting regarding the and investigation into the cost and benefits of installing these cameras, which will be debated on the night.

Rewarding land clearing with carbon credits

LAND clearing is happening at an alarming rate in NSW. Here in Port Stephens sand mines, industry and large scale housing developments are resulting in significant land clearing.

The Nature Conservation Council are calling for the Federal Government to maintain carbon offset rules that exclude regrowth on illegally cleared land and the planting of weed species from the national carbon credit scheme.

The Government recently began a public consultation asking stakeholders whether the exclusion applied to illegal and ecologically degrading processes should remain in place.

“It’s astonishing that the Government even thinks this is a reasonable question to ask,” Nature Conservation Council Chief Executive Chris Gambian said.

“It speaks volumes about this government’s values and its approach to climate change and conservation.

“Energy Minister Angus Taylor must maintain these exclusions — to do otherwise would reward companies and individuals who are illegally clearing land and degrading our natural world.

"There are already serious questions

about the integrity of Australia’s carbon credit scheme.

“Lifting these exclusions would make it a joke.”

The proposed amendments to the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative) Rule 2015 come as the government announced another major change to the carbon market.

Minister Taylor has announced carbon traders will be allowed to re-sell credits already bought by the Commonwealth, a move that the Nature Conservation Council say will significantly distort the carbon market and set back Australia’s emission reduction efforts by 112 million tonnes.

“This reckless market intervention by Mr Taylor undermines the integrity of the carbon market in Australia and will slow the adoption of new emissions reduction measures,” Nature Conservation Council Chief Executive Chris Gambian said.

“This does nothing to reduce emissions or increase carbon sequestration – it is an accounting trick that will enrich carbon traders.”

“Today’s creative accounting by the Morrison Government is equivalent to almost the entire annual emissions of NSW. “If it was worried about carbon traders welching on contracts, the Government had many options to enforce those contracts,” Mr Gambian said.

“Instead, the government has delivered a $2.6 billion windfall to carbon traders, at

Kathy Brown of EcoNetwork Port Stephens told News Of The Area, “EcoNetwork Port Stephens fully supports the comments of the Nature Conservation Council Chief Executive, Chris Gambian.

“EcoNetwork Port Stephens would also add that it is another instance of the federal government interfering in the marketplace as it tries to deal with our quickly changing energy markets.

“Energy providers are adapting to falling investment in fossil fuels while our Federal Government tries to strong arm them into keeping clunker power stations operating.

“This decision to open up the market on carbon credits will allow farmers and landholders to tap into an increasing market demand for Australian Carbon Credit Units.

“According to the Australian Financial Review (March 4, 2022), the Government’s revised rules on carbon credits will also provide funds for them to underwrite new schemes such as Santos’ controversial Moomba gas plant carbon capture and storage project in South Australia, which hinges on access to Australian carbon credit units.

“Angus Taylor and the Federal Government are supporting the opening up of new gas fields in a week when the latest IPCC report tells us we are headed for three degrees of warming and must stop using fossil fuels,” Kathy said.

Kingfish Study Launches

By Marian SAMPSON IF you have ever wondered what your fishing license fees go towards, this is one funded project which is set to improve knowledge of kingfish fisheries.

Project Kingfish is a science initiative led by the Sydney Institute of Marine Science in collaboration with Macquarie University, the UNSW and NSW Department of Primary Industries.

The project aims to satellite track movements of maturesized yellowtail kingfish (>83 cm fork length) to fill current knowledge gaps about their regional movements, habitat use and connectivity, and gain insights into where the east Australian stock may be spawning and recruiting to the coast.

Kingfish are known to frequent Port Stephens, and as a pelagic species they travel up and down the coast.

Catching a Kingfish is a great sport fishing experience and to top it off the species make for great eating.

To achieve success

the research team will be partnering up with experienced anglers over the next two years to find, catch and tag suitable fish in various locations off the NSW coast as well as offshore seamounts/islands and other sites of relevance to the stock.

The first satellite tag was recently deployed on a 125 cm kingfish in the waters off Norfolk Island by Project Kingfish collaborator Dr Thomas Clarke and experienced local angler Scotty Greenwood.

CLUB Championships have been in full swing at the Soldiers Point Bowling Club.

Last week the Final of the Men's Minor Pairs was played before an appreciative crowd.

The team of Fred Young and Neil Guy was opposed

by Geoff Thomas and Bruce Hamilton.

Neil's team got off to an impressive start leading 13 shots to 8 but Bruce and Geoff challenged, winning three ends to narrow the score to 13/8.

However, they could not sustain the comeback and, with luck deserting them in the bowls head, lost several ends in a row.

The final score was 25 shots to 8 so congratulations go to Fred and Neil as the Minor Pairs Champions.
