by Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC QC Governor of New South Wales to members of Marine Rescue Port Stephens.

Marine Rescue Port Stephens Coxswain Laurie Nolan received the Star of Courage in recognition of his conspicuous courage in the face of great peril as the crew of rescue vessel Port Stephens 40 battled 50 knot winds and 5-6m seas to save disabled racing yacht M3.

Fourteen other members of the unit received national Bravery Medals for their service to the community in the M3 mission and a series of other operations in wild conditions on January 6 and 7, 2016, including responding to five Maydays and searching for a lost yachtsman.

By Marian SAMPSON IT was flagged, prior to the Mambo Wanda Wetlands being returned to the public, that a small parcel of land adjacent to a public park that many believed was a park, was slated for sale by Council.

It enraged a community that was already fighting to save koala habitat in the area.

The Mambo Wetlands Conservation Group and other members of the community have been galvanised to save the plot of land which is a koala corridor from the wetlands to the beach.

Koalas are regularly spotted in the trees of 109 Foreshore Drive.

It has been the site of protests and it currently has signs up calling for the community to contact the Mayor and let him know that the land is not for sale.

Saving the land and having it listed as public parkland was one of Leah Anderson’s election commitments.

Now it appears that Council may have had a change of heart as two mature gum trees have been planted on 109 Foreshore Drive last week.

Irene Jones of the Mambo Wanda Wetlands Conservation Group told News Of The Area, “We want to thank Council for planting the trees and we hope now this is a sign that this is a piece of land that needs to be reclassified.

“It is wonderful to see Council going to the effort of improving the quality of the environment at

the site.”

Port Stephens Councillor Leah Anderson told News Of The Area, “I have made a promise to the community during my election campaign that I would stand up and fight for what was important to them.

“I know that 109 Foreshore Drive is very important.

“I know previous Cr John Nell fought for this several times also, unfortunately he was not successful.

“I want the community to know that I am listening, and have been listening for many years, and in my new capacity as East Ward Councillor, I have put forward a notice of motion to have 109 Foreshore Drive placed back in community hands.

“I hope that Cr Matthew Bailey and Cr Glen Dinkley, my fellow East Ward councillors, will support this notice of motion, as they should also know how important this is to our community.

“I also hope Mayor Ryan Palmer, a fellow East Ward Resident, is listening to the community and will support this reclassification of this iconic block of land.

“Please share this story far and wide, the sale of 109 Foreshore Drive should not happen, this land should be handed back to the community,” she said.

Ampcontrol Provide Port Stephens Koalas With Vital Equipment

WHEN Covid reached Australian shores, it was local company Ampcontrol at the coal face, engineering and manufacturing the ventilators that our community needed.

Now the local company is strengthening its long term community support of Port Stephens Koala Hospital with the purchase of critical clinical equipment to treat, rehabilitate and protect endangered koalas across the Hunter and Mid North Coast region of NSW. The game-changing veterinary diagnostic laboratory equipment includes a Catalyst One Chemistry Analyser with VetLab Station Computer vital to conducting an accurate and comprehensive analysis of organ function and a ProCyte DX Haematology Analyser vital to conducting complete blood counts

for screening, presurgical testing and general check-ups.

Ampcontrol Managing Director and CEO Rod Henderson described to News Of The Area the impact the new equipment will have on koala populations now and into the future.

“The Port Stephens Koala Hospital has been a presence in the Hunter community for 35 years and as long-standing supporters of the organisation, we are thrilled to be able to provide game-changing equipment.”

“To see Ampcontrol providing a real-world solution that is making a difference now, whilst enabling the local hospital to advance and continue its work into the future, is incredibly rewarding," Mr Henderson continued.

Conditions such as dehydration, kidney failure and chlamydia, which is considered a major driver behind the rapid decrease in koala numbers, can now be diagnosed in under 30 minutes.

Through immediate and accurate diagnosis hospital staff and volunteers can treat injured and ill koalas quicker, ensuring a higher chance of being able to release them to the wild and the breeding pool in the future.

Port Stephens Koala Hospital President Ron Land was effusive in his appreciation of the continuing support from Ampcontrol, commenting that the donation enabled the purchase of state-of-the-art blood and organ specimen analysers which have already shown to be instrumental in saving koala lives.

“Port Stephens Koala Hospital is

extremely proud of its relationship with one of the Hunter Region’s most respected firms and looks forward to continuing to work with Ampcontrol in the fight to save one of the last surviving colonies of koalas in NSW” added Mr Land.

Before the arrival of the equipment, valued at over $70,000, the veterinary team at Port Stephens Koala Hospital would be faced with waiting up to two weeks to receive lab results from external providers, which significantly impacted survival rates along with repeated and longer sedation of the koalas to obtain samples.

Formed in 1987, the Port Stephens Koala Hospital aims to provide the world best practice level of care to sick, injured and orphaned koalas to give them the best opportunity to be returned to the wild, while supporting research and collaboration to preserve their habitat to ensure generations to come will continue to enjoy seeing these wonderful creatures in their natural habitat.

Emergency Services Update

IT’S time for your weekly emergency services update.

RFS Training This week, local brigade members from the Williamtown/ Salt Ash Rural Fire Brigade carried out fuel load assessments around the Bobs Farm area.

During this time, they explored fire trails and examined the vegetation growth throughout the area.

Traffic Blitz Lemon Tree Passage Port Stephens Hunter Police continued their traffic blitz on the peninsula this week with a stationary RBT being conducted on Lemon Tree Road at Tanilba Bay on 13 February.

Around 100 drivers were tested and the district is happy to report none returned a positive reading.

A Win For Cultural Heritage, Environment and Ecology

THE Development Application (DA) to extend the building at Soldiers Point Marina has been controversial.

Past President of the Soldiers Point Community Group (SPCG), Jean Armstrong, told News Of The Area, “The SPCG was formed some ten years ago in order to protect the heritage and environmental integrity of the Soldiers Point peninsula.

“The tireless efforts of the foundation members of the Group and of Carol RidgewayBissett, together with invaluable advice from the Environmental Defenders Office (EDO) and the due diligence of Heritage NSW (HNSW) and of SPCG external experts, has resulted in the welcome decision by Port Stephens Council to refuse development of the Soldiers

Point Marina building and associated community land.

“The decision also puts into question any proposed future development within this ecologically sensitive site and indeed the entire peninsula,” she said.

It is understood that the site is adjacent to traditional Indigenous burial grounds, and that middens were once present in the immediate area.

Carol Ridgeway-Bissett, a Worimi custodian and knowledge holder who was born in Soldiers Point, is proud of the Indigenous heritage of the area.

At the community meeting last week, Carol spoke about the deep connection that Indigenous people have to country.

While some cultural assets are tangible like scar trees that can clearly be seen, she is keen for the wider community

to understand that there are also special places which have intangible links to the culture of the area’s Indigenous people.

Roz Armstrong is a local community advocate who participates in Landcare and other community groups.

She said, “This is a big win for the community.

“More especially for people like Jean Armstrong and Carol Ridgeway-Bissett, who together, with the rest of the committee, have been solidly committed to bring the Council to an understanding of why this Development Application must be refused.

“We are ecstatic with the result and thank East Ward Councillor Leah Anderson for her most comprehensive amendment to the Council Staff recommendation to refuse the development on seven grounds including; Aboriginal Heritage; environment and ecology; traffic management and parking; and of course the public interest,” she said.

Ken Wyatt visits Murrook Cultural Centre

THE Murrook Cultural Centre at Williamtown was visited last week by the Federal Minister for Indigenous Australians, the Hon Ken Wyatt AM MP, where the Minister met with Indigenous groups and organisations.

The Minister heard from the Worimi people how they have been managing Covid-19 and supporting the community during this time.

The Minister presented the Worimi Local Aboriginal Land Council Elders with an Aboriginal flag.

Hon Ken Wyatt said, “The Commonwealth now holds the copyright for the Indigenous flag; it belongs to everyone; no one can take it away.”

Defence Force To The Rescue In Aged Care

WITH nursing homes around the region in lockdown, residents and families are desperately seeking help.

There is some hope on the horizon with the Australian Defence Force stepping in to help ease the crisis.

At the request of Emergency Management Australia, the Australian Defence Force (ADF) is providing military planners as well as augmentation and ADF-only quick reaction teams to support aged care facilities in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

These support teams will feature a number of roles including team leaders, registered and enrolled nurses, and supporting personnel.

The placement of personnel will be made in consultation with the Department of Health.

However the support

still does not address the staff to resident ratios in aged care facilities nor other issues raised in the Royal Commission.

Nor does it address the issue of the aged care sector being locked down as Australia opens up.

Families of residents are calling for a change in policy in relation to locking down nursing homes.

A Sydney based daughter of a Port Stephens nursing home resident told News Of The Area, “My mother has been in hospital or nursing homes for the past three months.

“During that time I have had one controlled visit in the hospital, where I drove for four to five hours for a short visit and could not bring my husband in with me.

“Since moving into the nursing home, she was in lockdown from 10-24 December.

“We drove from Sydney to see Mum on 23 December, and

waited until after lunch time on December 24, but she was not allowed out until late on 24 December, after I had to leave to be home for 25 December.

“I promised Mum I would see her in January instead.”

However her mother had not received her Covid-19 booster shot, so she arranged to see her ten days after her scheduled appointment on 17 January.

It was extremely concerning to the family that she did not have adequate Covid protection while the state continued to open up.

“By January 17, the nursing home was experiencing a slow-burn COVID outbreak.

“Mum was locked back into her room, not allowed out under any circumstance.

“She has now been locked in her room for at least six weeks, and is still not allowed out.

“I feel that it is entirely possible that elderly people could spend the rest of their

lives locked into their rooms for the majority of the time because of current policies.

“As the decision has been made to allow Covid to rip through society, that must include elderly people who are part of society.

“They must be boosted as

early as possible and as often as needed, but then they must be allowed to take part in life and in society.

“This is not an ideal solution, as ideally the exposure would not have been manufactured to its current level.

Federal Liberal candidate for Paterson Brooke Vitnell, who said the Minister's visit meant a great deal to the community.

Ms Vitnell told News Of The Area, “The flag is a symbol that can now be celebrated and shared by all Australians – growing in strength and meaning for generations to come.”

The Minister also thanked staff for their work protecting people through Covid-19 and encouraging people to get vaccinated.

Aboriginal Elders present believe that this may be the first time a federal Minister for Indigenous Australians has ever visited the Paterson electorate.

“However, it has now been done.

“There are surely ethical questions around locking old people into their rooms and denying them contact with their families and friends,”she said.

It is understood that the family will finally be reunited this week.

What Now For Our Endangered Koalas?

THERE is no doubt that the plight of the koala has captured the attention of the world and those fighting to save the species are now asking ‘Could the tide be changing, at last? and 'Can the koala survive?'.

Federal Environment Minister Sussan Ley announced last Friday that the conservation listing for koalas in NSW, ACT and QLD has been upgraded from Vulnerable to Endangered.

"Together we can ensure a healthy future for the koala and this decision, along with the total we have committed to koalas since 2019, will play a key role in that process," Ms Ley said.

This comes after the recent announcement of a $50 million investment by the Federal Government to restore koala habitat.

Member for Paterson Meryl Swanson said, “I

welcome the Federal Environment Minister’s decision to upgrade the status of koalas from ‘vulnerable’ to ‘endangered’, but it is disgraceful it has taken so long, and it is disgraceful that it was necessary at all.

“This is our national icon!

“The Minister received advice to list the koala as ‘endangered’ from her Threatened Species Scientific Committee in October 2021."

Ms Swanson wants to know why it has taken the Minister so long to act on the advice.

“Habitat loss is the biggest risk to the koala, and yet this Government continues to allow thousands of hectares to be cleared for projects such as Brandy Hill Quarry. “ Ms Swanson also questioned why Ms Ley has not replaced the Koala Conservation and Management Strategy that ended in 2014 and where the Threatened Species Recovery

Plan for the koala that was due in 2015 is.

Koala Koalition, a Special Interest Group within EcoNetwork Port Stephens, wants the community to understand why the extra funding and endangered status is needed.

Carmel Northwood of Koala Koalition told News Of The Area, “Habitat clearance for extractive industries, development and infrastructure has consistently been approved even when the footprints have included koala habitat.

“Habitat clearance is not only an issue for wildlife.

“Factor in the relentless noise, dust and heavy truck traffic from quarries, and the decreasing value of neighbouring properties, and it is clear the local communities pay a heavy price.

“A couple of years ago rocks won out over the koalas at Brandy Hill.

“Minister Ley approved Hanson to extend their quarry there after concerned residents came out in force to campaign against the mine and got the matter referred for a Federal decision.”

Development applications for quarries continue to be submitted within the Port Stephens and MidCoast LGA’s.

There are also eight sand mines approved within Port Stephens.

“Where is the strategic planning that should organise where these developments, mines and quarries are built, and consider the cumulative impacts on the local populations of people and wildlife?” Carmel asks.

While strategic planning may still be thin on the ground, a recent decision by the Hunter and Central Coast Regional Planning Panel gives hope that the cumulative impact of development and habitat clearance is being taken seriously.

Concept development plans for an extensive housing development within the Kings Hill Urban Release Area (KHURA), north of Raymond Terrace, were refused due to 17 areas of concern with koalas being a major concern.

The Panel’s decision followed a concurrence refusal by the Director of Hunter Central Coast Biodiversity, Conservation and Science, delegate for the NSW Secretary

of Environment, Energy and Science (EES), who cited seven ecological reasons.

Local concerned groups, including Koala Koalition, have submitted multiple objections to the proposed development since 2018.

Being the largest single area earmarked for development in the KHURA, the proposal included plans to build 3500 houses and correlating infrastructure.

Valuable Investment in Tanilba Bay Public School Facilities

STUDENTS at Tanilba Bay Public School have returned in 2022 to find some exciting changes have occurred over the summer break.

The Department of Education has invested over $320,000 in an upgrade of the administration block of the school.

This money was part of a Regional Renewal Program, with the school contributing a little extra.

The grant has enabled the school to make significant improvements to the office space, including installation of automatic doors, providing universal access for all students, parents and school visitors.

The open and inclusive space creates not only a collaborative environment for the school administration team to work but is more accessible and inviting.

A further $80,000 has been invested in a vibrant update to the school library, which has been transformed into a welcoming and

relaxing learning space.

New shelving, work areas, seating and décor have created a fantastic environment for all Tanilba Bay Public School students.

Year six student Elizabeth Hyland shared her view of the new renovations, commenting, “The new library space is so much brighter and comfortable.

“We have some great space to sit and read, and the new shelving makes it much easier to find the books we are interested in.

Road damage discussed

In a notice of motion raised by Councillor Giacomo Arnott and seconded by Mayor Ryan Palmer, several Port Stephens roads which are in bad condition were discussed at the recent Council meeting.

These roads included Ford Avenue (Medowie), Sturgeon Street (Raymond Terrace), Nelson Bay Road and Gan Gan Road.

Councillor Arnott noted a road deformity at approximately 3 Ford Avenue, Medowie, in the form of a sharp rise across the width of the road, alongside the poor

The motion that was passed in the chambers requested that Council’s Traffic Committee investigate the difficulty in judging car speeds due to acceleration when trying to turn out of Gan Gan Road and whether any speed changes or relocation of speed signs would be warranted to reduce risk at this intersection.

Building a Better Anna Bay and Surrounds

THE South Tomaree Community Association is an active group advocating for doing things better locally.

Chris Mitchell told News Of The Area, “The work of the Association has been limited during the pandemic but has still been able to complete several projects aimed to meet our objectives.

“These have included making and locating a street library at Anna Bay Surf, Bike and Skate, installing and regularly servicing receptacles for tangled line and fishing tackle waste, replacing a picnic table, after negotiating the donated services and materials of Anna

Bay Sand and Earthmoving to pour a concrete base, having a review of litter bins completed

by Port Stephens Council and the relocation of bins to best service the identified high litter areas and reduce waste on our streets.”

The group has also supported the installation of a sandstone seat along Gan Gan Rd for the residents of Anna Bay Village to rest when walking to town.

This again was only made possible by the generous donation from Anna Bay Sand and Earthmoving.

If you would like to be involved in making the region more liveable, and have a few hours to spare each month the committee would like

you to consider joining the association.

The South Tomaree Community Association AGM and a general meeting will be held on February 20 at Birubi Point Hall at 3.30pm.

The Association will be meeting to elect executive members and discuss and plan future priorities.

This is also a great opportunity for Councillors and the general community to hear what the locals believe needs improving in the villages of Anna Bay, Fisherman’s Bay and Boat Harbour.

Unregistered Motorbikes in Raymond Terrace

UNREGISTERED motorbikes in Raymond Terrace have become a large issue for those in the community.

This week, a motion discussing unregistered motorbikes in Raymond Terrace, has been debated and passed in the Port Stephens Council.

Raised by West Ward Councillor Giacomo Arnott three months ago at the final Port Stephens Council meeting before elections, the motion was dismissed until the Council meeting on 8 February 2022.

“The passing of this

motion will start the process of investigating whether Council is able to implement any solutions to prevent these awful, selfish motorbike riders from getting onto our pathway,” Councillor Arnott said.

Despite the motion passing, Councillor Arnott had stated that he will not just leave it to Council, and will be working to also solve the issue outside of the Council chambers.

“Separately, I will be engaging with Raymond Terrace Police and local residents directly to try put an end to this practice.

“Areas where families go every single day should be safe and I am committed to making sure this pathway is safe,” Councillor Arnott said.

The motion which passed notes the significant number of unregistered motorbikes which travel along the Lakeside to Medowie pathway behind Raymond Terrace and Richardson Road.

It also notes that families use the path and should not have to face the physical danger of unregistered motorbikes when using the pathway.

A report will be prepared on ways to reduce entry points for unregistered motorbikes, and engineered solutions to prevent usage on the pathway of unregistered motorbikes.

“To be clear - I couldn't care less if people ride unregistered motorbikes around the place they do that at their own risk and make their own choices.

“It just shouldn’t be done on pathways where kids are running around blind corners every day.

“It's that simple.

“The moment your actions impact on someone else like this, it's no longer okay,” Councillor Arnott said.

Report details economic cost of Alzheimer's Disease

“This is a huge challenge for an aged care system already under pressure. It will see financial impacts of formal residential and community aged care rising by almost $3.6 billion annually and requiring a paid workforce of 18,652 in 2041 to support those living with Alzheimer’s disease in the community alone, up from 10,752 in 2021,” said Professor Brown.

Associate Professor Michael Woodward AM, geriatrician and Head of Aged Care Research, Austin Health said importantly the report also provides an opportunity to quantify the societal costs outside the health system.

“The impact I see on carers and the community each day is often the most challenging to quantify. However, with an expected additional 80,000+ people with Alzheimer’s disease in the community by 2041 compared with today we can’t afford not to consider this impact in any future approach,” Associate Professor Woodward said.

The report also investigated the potential impact of a disease modifying therapy on the numbers.

A NEW report from the University of Canberra’s National Centre for Social and Economic Modelling (NATSEM) reveals the staggering future economic cost of Alzheimer's disease, and its impact on Australia’s workforce, patients, families and communities.

The report, ‘The Economic and Societal Cost of Alzheimer's Disease in Australia, 2021-2041’, commissioned by Biogen Australia and New Zealand, builds on NATSEM and Dementia Australia’s ‘Economic Cost of Dementia in Australia 2016-2056 Report’ released in 2017 and projects a 20-year $442 billion impact of Alzheimer’s disease to the Australian economy.

Lead author Emeritus Professor Laurie Brown from NATSEM said the number of people aged 50 and over with diagnosed Alzheimer’s disease is expected to increase by 73 percent from 153,888 in 2021 to 266,114 by 2041.

This increase will lead to an annual cost of $26.6 billion, including direct costs (aged care, hospital and out of hospital services) of $9.8 billion and indirect costs (informal care, lost productivity, and income support) of $16.8 billion by 2041.

“The Federal Government should pay attention to this public groundswell of support for clean industries and, and commit to credible carbon cuts this critical decade.

“The Government can play a huge role in helping NSW harness its immense natural advantages and put it on a path to becoming a clean industry and renewables superpower."

Prosperity Lies In Clean and Green

CLEAN and green energy is high on voters priorities.

A new poll of over 1000 NSW voters in regional, rural and metropolitan NSW reveals that a strong majority believe NSW’s future economic prosperity lies in clean industries (60%), including renewable energy exports (e.g. green hydrogen), critical minerals such as lithium and cobalt, and manufacturing renewable products.

Notably, only one fifth of voters in NSW (21%) believe future prosperity lies in coal and gas.

New South Wales and Queensland dominate the Australian coal export sector, and New South Wales is home to the world's largest coal port in Newcastle.

Tomago is home to some new battery initiatives which fit the clean energy bill.

Yet two-thirds say clean jobs in renewable energy will be the best source of future employment (68%).

Only 19% in NSW back fossil fuels as the best source of future jobs.

With fewer people having moderate or severe AD dementia, the cost of informal care is also reduced by $4.3 billion – giving a total savings of $12.2 billion.

“While the modelling suggests that the introduction of a disease modifying therapy has the potential to lessen the future impact of Alzheimer’s disease, it is only part of the solution,” said Associate Professor Woodward.

“The findings in this report attest to the importance of developing and implementing a system and society-wide approach, in alignment with the anticipated national dementia strategy to ensure we can provide the best possible clinical outcomes and quality of life in the future.

We do not have time to delay,” Associate Professor Woodward continued.

This data reinforces the findings from the recent White Paper on the ‘Future of Alzheimer's disease in Australia’ that revealed the need for urgent collaboration and action in the healthcare system to manage the growing impact of the disease.

Port Stephens Probus Club enjoy first meeting of 2022

MEMBERS of the Probus Club of Port Stephens finally got off the mark for 2022 with their February Meeting attended by 80 members and guests who were welcomed by President Phil Dodd.

Ann Gibson of the Probus Club Of Port Stephens told News Of The Area, “It was very pleasing to see so many friends enjoying being together again albeit, with the dreaded but necessary masks.”

At the Christmas lunch in December, the Club celebrated the 10 year Anniversary since ladies were permitted to join the once male-only club.

Pam Pett and Pam Ross

were the first cabs off the rank and received Commemorative pins and flowers.

John Townsend also received his 20 year service pin at the same function.

The February meeting shone the spotlight on three more ladies, Ann Gibson, Judy Sutton and Margaret Estreich, who had chalked up ten years, as well as Ron Gibson, another 20 year veteran.

“The President had a very busy time with all these presentations,” Ann said.

“Noel Wathen received his Nonagenarian Certificate (90 years old in January) and then (we had) the all-important Induction of three new members.

“Pauline Caelli, Kerry and Neville Jacobs were warmly welcomed by members present,” Ann said.

After nine Inductions in November and December, the Club now boasts a membership of 140.

Members also paid respect to recently departed popular member Leon Lindsay with a reading of his lengthy profile followed by a minute's silence and a Powerpoint photo display.

“The guest speaker was Leah Anderson with a great insight into what goes on at the Koala Sanctuary and Hospital, and the members enjoyed her presentation very much,” she said.

Green Light For Engineered Wood

THERE is a shortage of timber in the Hunter region which is impacting the new housing sector.

Master Builders say the Federal Government’s move to increase support for the use of low-carbon timber is good news for the building and construction sector and will support jobs and economic activity while reducing greenhouse emissions.

Low carbon timber is an engineered timber product.

Master Builders Australia CEO Denita Wawn said, “(The) announcement of $300 million to incentivise the greater use of low carbon engineered wood products in commercial and medium density housing is a big pragmatic policy win for the building, construction and forest industries, consumers and the environment.

Great Southern Nights comes to Nelson Bay

GREAT Southern Nights is a celebration of live music that takes place across New South Wales.

The NSW Government initiative, delivered by Destination NSW in partnership with the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) aims to stimulate the revival of the State’s live music, entertainment and hospitality sectors, and in turn the NSW visitor economy, in response to challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year a Nelson Bay venue has been awarded funding to host one of over 1,000 COVID-safe performances across the state.

On 8 April 2022, Seabreeze Hotel in Nelson Bay will be hosting Pocket

Aces, a versatile four-piece band from Newcastle at 8pm.

“In the last four years we’ve built a reputation for our versatility and eclectic mix of songs; there’s not many gigs around town where you’d hear ‘I’m Too Sexy’, ‘Minnie the Moocher’ and ‘Suck My Kiss’ in the same set,” the band told News Of The Area.

“This has been tough, and we went from playing every weekend to a complete stop of all gigs.

“It’s been a slow restart with a few bumps thrown in so we’re really keen to be playing regularly again.

The Great Southern Nights initiative launched in November 2020, Australian Music Month, with over 1,000 COVID-safe performances from more than 2500 artists in 300-plus live music venues across NSW from Katoomba

to Kingscliff, Goulburn to Gosford for Great Southern Nights.

The dynamic event features hundreds of COVIDsafe performances at live music venues across Greater Sydney and regional NSW in March and April 2022.

“We love what Great Southern Nights are doing to bring back live music in NSW and we’re stoked to be included in their program.

“It’s been nearly two years since we played at Seabreeze Hotel and we’re looking forward to making it a great night,” The Pocket Aces said.

All music events are programmed in line with NSW Government Public Health Orders and advice regarding physical distancing and COVID-safe venue capacity.

Indigenous Funding Announcement

THE NSW Government has announced nearly $5 million in grant funding to support Aboriginal families and communities staying safe and connected to critical services during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Ben Franklin said directly investing in Aboriginal communities and Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOs) is making a real difference to communities, many of them in remote and regional locations.

In Port Stephens Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people made up 4.8 percent of the population and in Tea Gardens 4.2 percent, and Hawks Nest 3.8 percent of the population.

“We know that Covid has had a significant impact on our Aboriginal communities across the state,” Mr Franklin said.

“Providing funding to Aboriginal communities and ACCOs is vital to ensuring everyone across the State has access to essential services to keep them physically and socially well, while also remaining connected to the places and people most important to them.”

Mr Franklin said today the COVID-19 Aboriginal Community Response Grants Program is being extended for another three months until April 29, 2022.

There is plenty of debate about the planned power plant designed to fuel the region, particularly as it isn’t that long ago that Tomago Aluminium had to switch off production to keep the lights on in other parts of NSW. Liberal candidate for Paterson Brooke Vitnell

“The Kurri Kurri gas fired power station will provide a safeguard for families, communities and industries against higher prices, which could skyrocket by up to 30 percent if the Liddell power station is not replaced with on-demand, reliable power to keep the lights on and prices low.”

Tomago CEO Matt Howell has said the Kurri Kurri gas generator “is absolutely essential” because, as he points out, the largest battery in Australia would run Tomago “for less than eight

In NSW 24.6 percent of energy was renewable and only 1.5 percent was generated by gas.

“As part of our COVID-19 mental health recovery package, we’re looking to our sporting clubs to inspire people to make their mental health and wellbeing a top priority in 2022,” Mrs Taylor said.

“These grants are intended to take conversations about mental health out of the clinic and into the clubhouse.

“We want people talking about how they’re going emotionally and mentally in a setting they are comfortable with.

“As well as being a fun recreational activity, exercise in almost any form can act as a stress reliever.
