By Marian SAMPSON PORT Stephens SES volunteers are always ready to put their hands up to help not only the local community but the wider community whenever there is need.

Last week saw the team join some 400 other emergency service workers and volunteers in a desperate four day search for a toddler lost in rugged terrain.

Three year old Anthony 'AJ' Elfalak had simply gone missing from the family home.

There were grave fears for the toddler.

The dam was emptied.

Thoughts turned to William Tyrell who went missing in 2014 - who has still not been found.

Throughout the tough search members of Port Stephen SES Charlie 9 team were led by Greg ‘Bluey’ Chalmers.

Bluey told News Of The Area, “On the Saturday night I was with a young group of SES volunteers guiding them through the search and process.

“It was wet, we were in the middle of nowhere and I said ‘let’s have a break, have some water’.

Landcare group angered by further work on Seaview Crescent bushland FROM Page 1

Port Stephens Council, has angered local Landcare representatives who maintain the land.

Neither Council nor Bannisters consulted or did any planning with Landcare prior to the work being conducted.

Landcare team members believe that various management teams and owners of the nearby hotel have increased grassy spaces in the public reserve through actively reducing the area of bushland.

They are so incensed by what they see as the latest attack on the bushland that the matter has been reported to Environment NSW. While replanting was part of the planned works, Bannisters have chosen the plants from a cherrypicked list of shorter growing species and short-lived species which do not secure the fragile koala habitat.

Landcare representatives believe the community and those maintaining the site should choose a robust mix of plants from those endemic to the site.

A Council spokesperson told News Of The Area, “The list of trees to be replanted includes a number of mid-storey plants such as wattles and banksias.

“We are committed to replanting Forest Red Gum saplings when these are propagated from seeds collected onsite or sourced elsewhere.”

Port Stephens Council’s arborist is currently on long service leave.

“During this absence, we have employed a contractor to undertake assessments.

“The works within the reserve were undertaken under the direct supervision of Council staff,” the Council spokesperson said.

However locals report that the Council representative was not on site throughout the entire time that works were conducted.

Several young healthy trees were pruned at ground level and much of the low growing plant life was trampled during the works.

Council has advised that, “The tree pruning works were undertaken by a suitably qualified arborist (AQF3) and was provided

by Bannisters.

“The Tree Permit was issued

by Council staff and all works were conducted at Council’s direction.

“Council staff (Vegetation Officer) directed the works to ensure they were undertaken in accordance

with the tree permit.

“This arborist was not on site to oversee the public interest but rather to undertake the works.”

The Council staff present were not qualified arborists and this has caused further community outrage.

Stephens Council Chambers, Raymond Terrace, following reports of an unauthorised protest.

On arrival, police observed about 30 people in attendance and gave the group a move-on direction.

Three men allegedly failed to comply and were arrested.

Two of the men were issued Public Infringement Notices.

The other man, a 57-year-old, allegedly pushed a male inspector during his arrest.

The officer was not injured.

He was taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station where he

was charged with assaulting police, resisting arrest, failing to comply with face covering directive and unlawfully participating in an outdoor gathering.

The man was released on conditional bail to appear in Raymond Terrace Local Court on Monday 1 November, 2021.

LINDSAY Warner, the 63-year-old jet ski adventurer, has completed his circumnavigation of Australia.

He will now be entered into the Guinness Book of Records once his amazing feat is verified by observers and satellite tracking data.

link up with Dorothea Willey, a friend he met on one of his outback adventures in Western Australia.

“We were confident that he would make it,” remarked Dorothea.

“He took every precaution and his exact location was always known via satellite tracking,” she added.

“He had back-up at various points along the way and had two forced quarantine stopovers due to the Covid border restrictions.

“There were no major issues with weather or mechanical problems,” she said.

Lindsay's 15,000 km odyssey is even more remarkable when you consider that it was self funded and his Kawasaki jet ski was second hand.

The fuel bill alone was well over $30,000.

Lindsay's 2019 'warm up' for the adventure saw him circle Tasmania.

He was keen to promote men's mental health issues along the way.

“We turned off the lights, it was so quiet and I said to the team, ‘Can you imagine what AJ is thinking at the moment?’

“Then we simply turned the lights back on and got moving again.”

Throughout the search the team held on to the thought that they were involved in a search and rescue not a search and recovery operation.

It was early in the morning when Bluey was calling in a GPS mark for a wombat hole that he had been checking – there was a tiny footprint in the hole and there weren’t any droppings around the entrance.

It was almost at the same time that a Police helicopter called in that they had the boy in sight.

Bluey and his team were the first to reach the non-verbal toddler, they were literally just a few metres from the child.

“I touched him on the shoulder and he turned around and looked me in the eyes.

“AJ’s reaction to seeing the team was as though he was saying ‘you’ve taken your time mate’.

“We checked him over for life threatening injuries and I put him on my knee and gave him some water.

“AJ was too weak to hold the water bottle.”

Bluey called in that he had AJ and that he was fine.

Then he said to AJ, “Come on mate we will go to find mum.”

While Bluey cradled the toddler to his chest he reached out and touched the SES badges.

Bluey carried the exhausted child back to the base camp and his mother - AJ clutching his shirt all the way.

“It was a fantastic outcome.”

Bluey is proud of his team and his 10 years of service in the SES. “The SES is not for guys looking for glory, fame and fortune, the SES is for giving back to the community.”

They are there after storms helping people when all their belongings are destroyed.

“The greatest thing you can do is to help to protect them and help them any way you can…”

The SES is made up of a diverse set of individuals with a vast range of skills from paramedics and professors to retired engineers and tradies.

“We all have skills that can be passed on to the young people – the SES training is amazing yet out of ten that apply to join we end up retaining one.

“However the skills, training, knowledge and procedures from the training allow us to walk alongside each other in difficult conditions knowing each one of us has the qualifications to be there and can be depended upon.”

Bluey said that putting the call out to let the world know that they had AJ and that AJ was alright was the best moment in his life.

Yet Bluey knows that

LOCKDOWN isn’t a reason to get aggressive or abusive.

In a recent study by Queensland University of Technology Centre for Justice, a nationwide survey revealed that domestic and violence (DFV) in Australia has increased greatly since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, primarily due to stay-athome and lockdown orders.

Researchers surveyed 362 DFV agencies and individuals from across the country about their experiences.

Two thirds of DFV workers

reported an increase in new clients seeking assistance for a domestic or family violence matter since the COVID-19 pandemic reached Australia, with 63 percent of clients having school aged children.

More than 40 percent of these agencies noted a significant growth in controlling and coercive behaviour through this period.

Professor Kerry Carrington from Queensland University of Technology discussed this increase.

“We discovered that there was not only an increase in the severity

of domestic violence as well as its prevalence, but we also discovered, much to our surprise and shock, that perpetrators have been using COVID lockdowns to actually extend their coercive control over their partners.

“So, clearly the context of COVID; the financial, the psychological, the mental pressures of COVID, being locked down in the home with children has really exacerbated the prevalence of domestic violence.”

The Port Stephens-Hunter Police District emphasised that fleeing a violent or abusive relationship is a reasonable excuse to leave home during COVID-19.

“You do not have to stay in an unsafe home.

“You are always allowed to leave your home to access domestic and family violence support services or to stay safe from harm,” they confirmed.

Almost ten percent of service providers provided reports that perpetrators were finding new ways of emotionally and psychologically abusing victims during COVID-19, including ways of ‘weaponising’ the pandemic and intensely monitoring victims’ day-to-day movements.

Local resident David Rodley told News Of The Area, “Soldiers Point beaches are home to some wonderful endangered birds like the Pied Oystercatchers and the rare Beach Stone Curlew.

“These birds feed on the beach all the way from Soldiers Point Marina through to Cromarty Bay and they are highly susceptible to threats such as free roaming dogs.

“These beaches are designated 'dog on-lead' to protect the birdlife (and also our resident koalas who get stressed with the smell of dogs) so I encourage all dog owners

to be responsible and respect the sanctuary that Soldiers Point offers the wildlife.”

Port Stephens Council has advised, “Dogs are prohibited from Wildlife Protection Areas and Recreation Areas, and must always be on a lead in other areas unless they are at one of our designated off lead beaches.

“We ask our community to please be aware of this before taking their dogs off lead and to look for signage when walking your dog.”

Port Stephens Council’s website has a map which details all dog off lead areas. ”We encourage our community to stick to these sites when taking their dog out for exercise.

“The map includes beaches where dogs can be off lead to swim.

“Our rangers are always out and about to educate our community

and enforce these rules.”

The community can help to protect the Beach Stone Curlew and the Pied Oystercatchers by reducing disturbance by keeping dogs on lead – only walk your dogs off lead on dog-friendly beaches or off lead parks; when walking on our beaches, keep below the high-tide mark and off the dunes (especially fenced off areas) so you won’t disturb nests and habitat; looking out for our shorebird signs - if do see a shorebird while walking, observe it from a distance and give it plenty of space; report your observations.

Your records can help to conserve birds and their habitat.

You can report bird sightings from anywhere within the Hunter Region at https://www.hboc.org.au/ home/report-a-sighting/ and report any incidents to Council where you observe people breaking these rules.

On-lead Area Protects Critically Endangered Beach Stone Curlews

A NUMBER of Port Stephens’ beaches are designated as on-lead areas for dogs to protect fragile environments and species living under threat.

According to Local Land Services the Beach Stone Curlew which can be found at Soldiers Point is a critically endangered species.

The Pied Oystercatcher which can also be found in the area is listed as a vulnerable species.

According to Port Stephens Council there are only 11 breeding pairs of Beach Stone Curlew shorebirds left in NSW. We are fortunate to have a breeding pair right here at Soldiers Point.

ALL HSC students will get the opportunity to complete their studies in 2021, with the full complement of HSC exams to go ahead from 9 November 2021.

Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell today announced that students will be able to sit their HSC exams and receive their results in time for university offers to be made.

The NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) has issued a revised timetable, with 110 exams taking place over 19 days, ending on 3 December.

Students will receive their ATARs on 20 January 2022, with their HSC results released on 24 January.

Ms Mitchell said that after a disruptive and stressful year, students now have the certainty of the timetable and eight weeks to focus on preparing for their exams.

“Being able to sit all their exams safely is the best and fairest outcome for our HSC students,” Ms Mitchell said.

“Whether our students go on to university, vocational training or take on employment, it is important all of them are able to sit their exams and demonstrate what they know.

“I know that teachers, families and friends are supporting our HSC students every step of the way, and that the whole NSW community is wishing them well after a tough 18 months.”

Chair of the NESA Board Professor Peter Shergold said that providing a fair, equitable and safe opportunity for students to receive the HSC in 2021 continues to be at the forefront of every decision made by NESA. “Revising the timetable to start on 9 November and deliver results on 24 January required the reconfiguration of a massive logistical operation involving over 100,000

people,” Professor Shergold said.

“I am grateful to the NSW Vice Chancellors Committee and the Universities Admission Centre (UAC) for their support, and for working with us to deliver an outcome which will see students receive their results and their university offers in a timely way.”

Strict COVID safe protocols supported by NSW Health will be in place to protect students, exam supervisors and school staff when HSC exam start on 9 November 2021.

The protocols for a COVID-safe HSC require exam supervisors to be fully vaccinated and strongly encourage eligible HSC students to receive two vaccine doses before exams start.

Other safety measures include: ● Mandatory face masks for students and staff, indoors and outdoors ● Check-in and health screening protocols for students and staff ● Physical distancing between students and staff at all times ● Minimising mingling of student groups ● Keeping exam group sizes as small as possible ● Desks spaced a minimum of 1.5 metres apart and exam rooms well ventilated ● Hygiene marshals and regular cleaning of exam rooms.

An illness and misadventure process is available for students who are unable to attend an exam due to having a positive COVID-19 test result, or being a close contact.

Terrace Central Acts of Kindness

TERRACE Central is spreading acts of kindness through support and care packages for disadvantaged members of the community.

In a new initiative by the centre, care packages including basic staples, breakfast condiments, eggs, milk, tea and coffee, vegemite, milo and essential health items such as hand sanitiser, kitchen wipes, deodorant, soap and toilet paper, are being sent to a range of people unable to make their way to purchase these items.

This act of kindness aims to support the elderly, disadvantaged families and people with disabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic, to minimise stress or risk of infection.

said the care packs are a way for our retailers to come together and support our community during this challenging time.

“We know our community is suffering right now, with many families being impacted by the government restrictions

delivered by Council.

“I look forward to the community enjoying the Shoal Bay foreshore for many generations to come,” he said.

However for those living with the glare all day everyday enjoying the Shoal Bay foreshore has become something that won’t happen until the issue is effectively resolved.

Rooftop glare a headache

AS work progresses on the revitalisation of the Shoal Bay Foreshore precinct and moves towards completion, Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer is touting the project a success.

However for some locals the issue of glare reflecting off the Skillion rooftops which have been installed is one which is set to continue on.

One resident stated that the Skillion roofs have been painted in an effort to reduce glare, but have not done the job as they had hoped.

Peter Price, a spokesperson for residents impacted by the newly installed rooftops, told News Of The Area, “Council chose the cheapest alternative with ongoing costs every 18 months due to the intense heat and effects of saltwater on the metal.”

Tower DA Causing Community Angst

NELSON Bay has a history of DA’s where heights are challenged.

Today an application is in place for a tower that could come to dominate the landscape.

The application is for a building that will sit 29% above the existing height limit for the site.

Back in 2016 residents came out in numbers to protest the proposed development

and since then the crane has languished on the site.

The Tomaree Residents And Ratepayers Association (TRRA) has stated that, “As in 2016, TRRA welcomes the willingness of a developer to invest in the town and we have always looked forward to the prospect of a good new development to replace the unsightly vacant site/hole that has blighted the town for too long.

“We also welcome the interesting new design, which

has a lot of attractive features.

“However, the proposed building is simply too high, and defies the clear intent of Council in setting new height limits less than a year ago.”

TRRA President Ben van der Wijngaart, observed that this defies the clear intent of Council in setting new height limits less than a year ago, after more than a decade of community consultation and many expert studies.

“This limit was adopted

to protect the character and natural setting of Nelson Bay township and any variation should be minimal and only granted in exceptional circumstances.

“A critical test in the planning law is to demonstrate why complying with the height limit would be unreasonable or unnecessary.

“This application fails to make such a case,” he said.

Councils are expected to assume a “caretaker” role during election periods to ensure that major decisions are not made which would limit the actions of an incoming council.

However Council is planning to vote on a major development outside the height limitations.

TRRA believes that the application does not demonstrate why complying with the height limit would be ‘unreasonable or unnecessary’ – a test in the planning law it has to pass.

“In this case, the applicant should be asked to reduce the height of the building so that it complies with the recently adopted limits and meets community expectations.

There is no evidence that a building that complies with the height limit could not be commercially viable – it might just be less profitable.

By applying for an eleven storey building 29% over the height limit, the applicant in this case is demonstrating defiance against the clearly expressed wishes of the local community.

Members of the community are calling for Council staff and Councillors to follow through on their commitment to the Nelson Bay Strategy, as implemented in the amendments last year to the Local Environmental Plan, and refuse this DA, unless the design is changed to comply with height limits.

New freedoms for the double vaccinated in Port Stephens

By Marian SAMPSON WHILE many of NSW’s regional areas have come out of lockdown, Port Stephens is still reporting cases and Stay At Home orders remain in place.

As NSW races towards its 70% double vaccination target, Port Stephens residents are able to enjoy

some additional freedoms, but only for those who are double vaccinated.

There has been some confusion around the easing of rules for the vaccinated in locked down areas.

Five fully vaccinated people (plus children under 12) are

allowed to gather outside for recreation provided they are from the same LGA or sit within the 5km of the LGA border.

However all persons must be able to prove their vaccination status and the gathering must occur in a public place and not on private properties.

Mask wearing is still mandated.

In the past four weeks up to 12 September, the Hunter New England Health District has reported 165 cases, with the Port Stephens LGA reporting 46 cases.

In this time, 15990 Covid-19 tests have been completed in the LGA. To deal with the increased demand

for testing, a new drive through testing facility opened last Thursday in Raymond Terrace.

The 4Cyte Pathology Drive Thru Clinic is now open at Kings Park Sports Ground (Carpark), on the corner of Seaham and Newline Roads, Raymond Terrace between 7.30am-3.30pm Monday to Friday, from 7.30am to 1.00pm on Saturday and 8.00am to 12.00pm on Sunday.

Yes, the market is incredibly strong with properties selling quickly across all sectors, so the financial savings by listing yourself sound enticing, but I’m suggesting it’s false economy. Why? Because ‘self-sell’ owners tend to under sell their properties, not only via the price guide but often because they don’t have the negotiating skills of a professional, knowledgeable Agent. Sales statistics confirm that sale by owner results are significantly lower than those achieved via an Agent because when selling yourself, vendors start from scratch without the benefit of an Agent’s lengthy buyer base to tap.

Additionally, the marketing packages offered by ‘self-sell’ organisations are in the main quite minimal, ‘cookie-cutter’ packages not geared to your specific needs. And while there is the ability to have ‘human advice’ it’s all remote. There are some fairly important administrative details to attend to and the personalised, professional contact simply isn’t there. And by the time you’re ready to have inspections, are you really geared to handle those? Inspections and relationship building with prospective buyers are very time consuming. You get what you pay for. Don’t forego the result you deserve.

Rural Road Safety Month September is Rural Road Safety Month, and police are reminding rural residents to slow down and choose road safety, with 70% of crashes on country roads involving country residents due to the overconfidence and lower perception of risks under the belief that local residents are more familiar with the roads they are on.

Lockdown Stay-at-home orders are still in place for the Port

Swan Bay researcher identifies new Australian Crayfish species

SWAN Bay resident Robert McCormack has been a part of a team which has identified a new Australian Crayfish species.

It only took 15 years of rigorous research but finally the team have formally described a new species of freshwater crayfish.

Robert believes identifying the yabby is a win-win for the species.

The Swamp Yabby (Cherax latimanus) was formally described and published in the peer-reviewed international journal Zootaxa.

Port Stephens local Robert commenced research on the species in 2006 as part of the Australian Crayfish Project.

In 2012, Tarmo Raadik

from the Arthur Rylah Institute for Environmental Research, Victoria came onboard and together over the next nine years they worked together researching this new crayfish species.

Robert told News Of The Area, “Unless we formally recognise these species we cannot put protections in place for them.”

The elusive yabbie is a freshwater crayfish found along the Murray River from Lake Moira upstream to near Wodonga in New South Wales and Victoria, including along the Edwards River and Gulpa Creek, Barmah Forest, and the Murray River tributary catchments, an area of approximately 17,700 km2.

AFTER a long and difficult struggle supporting her husband suffering from Motor Neurone Disease, Daad Ruelle from Mallabula was dealt another devastating blow.

A mini cyclone tore down her street lifting tiles from roofs, flattening fences and sending trees crashing to the ground.

Daal suffered the worst of it when a neighbour's gum tree speared through her roof, demolishing a large section of the house.

“There was no way the SES could tarp it up as a crane was needed to lift the tree off the house,” Daal said.

“It was raining heavily at the time and my neighbours and friends rushed to my assistance.

“They rescued clothing, photos, mementos, linen,

documents and anything else which was threatened,” she added.

This new yabby can be found living within a metre of the common yabby but it lives in terrestrial environments, it's restricted to deep burrows in wet areas beside the creeks and rivers.

The newly identified yabbie spends the majority of its life within its burrow system only venturing out when floods occur inundating its surface burrows.

Burrows are typically in paddocks and roadside drains with terrestrial vegetation above the burrow.

Ellen Clark, a distinguished crayfish taxonomist, talking about common yabbies wrote in 1936, “At Whitegate, a few miles from Benalla (Victoria), some areas riddled by yabbies are practically useless and are known as “crab hole country”.

These may not be common yabby holes but C. latimanus burrows.

This is the first new species in the Murray Darling Basin since the description of Cherax rotundus in 1941.

It's extremely important to formally describe a species and give it a name.

The description provides the biological and distributional information the scientific community and management

The Surfing Mental Heath 360 platform includes past, present and future collaborations with The Good Human Factory, The Rise Foundation, Man Anchor, Batyr, Mental Health Movement and Waves of Wellness.

“Surfing NSW is in a unique position to influence a hard-toreach audience of boardrider clubs, surf schools and local surfing communities in our

coastal regions, many of whom are at risk of poor mental health,” said Surfing NSW CEO Luke Madden.

“Surfing NSW recognises the vital role that surfing can play in preventing, treating, educating and supporting sufferers of mental health.

“We have acquired funding from multiple sources to roll out specific mental health programs for our communities in the wake of the 2019/2020 NSW bushfires, COVID-19, recent shark attacks and other ongoing social issues faced by our communities.”

“We thank the Consumers Health Forum of Australia Youth Health Incubator Grant, Vinnies NSW Community Bushfire Recovery Grant Program and Randwick ClubGrants for their support over the course of the next 18 months to roll out much needed mental health programs that fall under our Surfing Mental Health 360 platform.”

These workshops will be conducted up and down the NSW Coast with sessions in Newcastle, and the Mid Coast regions.

The #Letstalk Workshop is a one hour course delivered at a grassroots level for mental health.

Well being movement ‘Man Anchor’ is a proud partner within Surfing NSW’s ‘Surfing Mental Health 360’ project.

The course creates opportunities designed for discussion, education and action on mental health issues that affect our coastal communities every day.

Triathlon Club bounces back

TOMAREE Triathlon Club are preparing to bounce back after a rough couple of months.

Although we can only return to our ‘new-normality’ after a 70% vaccination target is met, many sporting clubs are gearing up for what will come after,

holding on to a bright future.

Tomaree Triathlon Club is one of these.

Recently, the Club began regeneration work on their main

event site, with new poles to provide damage control for overflow.

of the site, however the Club were devastated to find that 30 metres of turf had been stolen, with investigation currently underway by the Police.

The Club didn’t give up and was fortunate to receive overwhelming support from the community.

Terry Withers, Club President told News Of The Area about the support that the Club received from the community.

“We had good feedback from the community from our Facebook post and were able to identify where we think it went, but most of all, we were incredibly fortunate that Bannisters supported us and donated the money to buy the turf that we had lost.

“We chose to look at the good that came of something like this, and we’re grateful that it helped highlight to the community what we as a Club have been doing to refurbish the area,” Terry said.

The Club are currently looking towards the future with new events planned for after lockdown.

“Currently our planned event for 7 November is a women's

only event with the mentality of ‘finish lines not finish times’, much like our successful event last year.

“We want to host events that can bring people together, and we’re looking to subsidise these as much as possible through funding and our brilliant sponsors.

Although the Club has a competitive level, many of these events are aimed at people simply giving it a go.

“We let competitors swim with swim aids, flippers and that sort of thing if they're not confident.

“It's all about removing those obstacles and giving people the opportunity to develop confidence, taking on something new and simply just starting somewhere,” Terry said.
