However tempers are boiling as the community wants a true consultation and briefing on the project.

One thing is clear: there are aspects of the documents of the concept plan that Bannisters representative Peter Bacon has stated are no longer valid.

Members of several community groups met last week and spoke with Peter Bacon on the changes to the approval which are being sought.

Originally the community was given ten days to comment on changes to the application.

Peter Bacon told News Of The Area, “The development is approved.”

Members of the community challenged Mr Bacon and asked for a community consultation.

There are four modifications that need to be approved.

“The building height is increasing by 600mm; increasing car spaces from 275 to 310; increasing hotel rooms from 84 to 90; and changed the serviced apartments to permanent residences.

“I want to focus on facts, I don’t want people lying… I am here to argue facts, enough fiction,” Mr Bacon said.

Newly elected East Ward Councillor Leah Anderson told News Of The Area, “In relation to funds from the development that go to Council I would like to see consultation with the community and look at where the funds should be allocated in things like roads, parking, pathways, pedestrian crossings.

“It comes back to transparency, and the funds should be spent in the area to address the concerns that the community has around the impact of the development.”

Mr Bacon discussed the need for community concerns to be addressed.

“We all need to work together on this.

“It is a community effort.”

He went on to confirm that the wildlife and koala corridor on the foreshore would be preserved, stating that the trees provide the property with protection from prevailing winds.

“It is an over $100 million dollar development which will create an iconic hero product, it will be the only one of its kind between Sydney and Byron Bay offering a 5 and 6 star hotel and conference facility.

Similarly he refuted the blasting of rock which is also included in the concept plan.

Man charged following drink driving and unrestrained passengers

By Tara CAMPBELL A MAN will face court this month after allegedly driving whilst more than two times the legal limit, with two unrestrained passengers in the ute tray of his vehicle.

At approximately 8.15pm on Saturday 4 December 2021, officers from Port StephensHunter Police District were conducting stationary random breath testing on Victoria Parade,

Nelson Bay, when a Holden Rodeo ute was stopped by police.

As the vehicle pulled into the RBT site, two passengers who had been travelling in the ute tray jumped out and ran from the scene.

Police spoke with the driver, a 23-year-old man, and observed two people in the front passenger seat sharing a seat belt.

The 23-year-old man underwent a roadside breath test which returned a positive

result; he was arrested and taken to Nelson Bay Police Station where he underwent a secondary breath analysis which allegedly returned a reading of 0.123.

He was charged with midrange PCA, along with receiving two infringement notices for having unrestrained passengers in the vehicle.

The two passengers inside the car were also issued infringement notices for not wearing a seat belt correctly.

The Mascot man will appear at Raymond Terrace Local Court on Monday 13 December 2021.

“Always remember – never get behind the wheel whilst fatigued, don’t drive with distractions such as mobile phones, and don’t drive whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

“Port Stephens-Hunter Police will be focusing this year on reducing road trauma through ongoing high-saturation operations,” a spokesperson for the district said.

- they’re exhausted, they’ve had enough and they just want out. ”They can’t wait another ten years for this mess to be cleaned up,” Ms Swanson told News Of The Area.

At the PFAS community information session, Ms Swanson called on Defence to take the community’s comments back to the Prime Minister.

“The PFAS pollution from the RAAF Base is not just a problem for Defence, it is a problem for the Prime Minister, and he must listen.

“Enough is enough.

“That is the message Defence representatives need to take back to the Prime Minister from the people of Williamtown,” Ms Swanson said.

Attendees were told that there has been no change in PFAS levels in groundwater since 2017, despite approximately $100 million being spent on the project.

will be finalised in early 2022, informing the PFAS Management Area Plan.

Alongside this, updated actions will include the installation of

a groundwater extraction and treatment bore field south of the base as well as an update on the actions across the rest of the facility.

region and Defence Minister Peter Dutton has visited our region, yet neither of them has been to see the people of Williamtown.

“It is time the Prime Minister

found a way to help the people of Williamtown move on.

“Defence made this mess and the Prime Minister must clean it up,” Ms Swanson said.

"It's been a tough year for everyone, and I wanted to give back to the community, both in Christmas cheer and to support a local family who's gone above and beyond to spread that cheer,” Mr Arnott said.

Port Stephens Election: what we know so far

RESULTS from the local government election continue to flood in, with votes too close to call.

With nine councillors and one mayor to be elected, the current results are as follows.

In Central Ward, Jason Wells’ Labor Group D is leading polls with 34.61% or 5,010 votes counted.

Independent Chris Doohan’s Group B is sitting on 29.09% or 4,211 votes, whilst Steve Tucker’s Group A has earned 25.54% or 3,696 votes.

Both Greens’ candidate Caitlin Spiller (Group C) and ungrouped independent Bill Doran have not reached the progressive quota for votes, with 1,373 and 184 votes respectively.

East Ward votes were close with Labor’s Leah Anderson (Group B) leading the polls with 39.65% or 5,363 votes.

Current mayor Ryan Palmer (Independent Group C) has 31.65% or 4,281 votes, with Liberal Candidate Matthew

Bailey’s Group A earning 28.70% or 3,882 votes.

West Ward showed a large swing in Labor voters, with current councillor Giacomo Arnott re-elected and the second of his group, Peter Francis also in line to be elected.

Arnott’s Labor group B earned 50.89% or 6,734 votes, meeting the progressive quota of 3,309 twice.

Peter Kafer’s Liberal Group A currently has 42.79% or 5,662 votes, whilst ungrouped candidates Monique Malone (218 votes), Danielle Le Mottee (243 votes), Christopher Baguley (197 votes) or Andrew Cole (179 votes) were unable to meet the quota to be elected.

The mayoral vote has been remarkably close, with firsttime candidate Leah Anderson currently sitting at 49.60% or 22,607 votes whilst current mayor, Ryan Palmer is sitting at 50.40% or 22,971 votes.

Interestingly, Anderson topped twelve polling sites, whilst Palmer topped fifteen, with one polling site only separated by one vote.

With initial counts made for all polling centres, declaration votes still to be counted and the remainder of postal votes to be sent in, it’s sure to be a close one.

Blockade convictions continue

FOUR more people who blockaded Newcastle Coal Port last month have been charged following their actions.

Wilkarr, John, Sal and Zelda are the newest members of Blockade Australia to be convicted.

Currently, all those convicted have been given Community Corrections Orders or Conditional Release Orders for between 12-24 months, along with fines and other restrictions like nonassociation orders, for some.

Blockade Australia confirms that many of the convicted are planning on appealing these sentences which restrict their ability to take action in the future.

force established Strike Force Tuohy to provide consequences for those participating in these

mass sand nourishment effort, regular top ups will be more cost effective and efficient than structures like an artificial headland.

Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the evaluation process was extensive and considered performance, environmental and social factors and included a cost benefit analysis.

“Four feasible coastal management options including an artificial reef, an artificial headland, sand back passing, and maintenance sand nourishment were assessed, and mass sand nourishment supported by annual sand nourishment top ups is considered the best solution for Stockton," Cr Nelmes said.

"The evaluation appraisal included both economic and non-economic factors to determine which scheme would best support our vision to provide an erosion

buffer to Stockton, return recreational beach amenity and the sense of identity that the beach provides to the local community.

“The process included a cost-benefit analysis that demonstrated that the greatest economic value resulting from the proposed coastal management scheme is the value of improved beach amenity, which is a value that extends beyond Stockton residents to the people of Newcastle and NSW.” With several NSW Government Agencies owning land along the northern section of the Stockton coastline, City of Newcastle is continuing to work with these stakeholders to ensure the proposed solution meets their needs.

"Support from affected agency landholders is critical to the successful implementation of the preferred solution as well

as a mandatory requirement of the Coastal Management Act 2016,” Cr Nelmes said.

The community had input into the evaluation of the schemes via a survey completed earlier this year and Chair of the Stockton Community Liaison Group, Barbara Whitcher, said she believes there is broad support for ongoing sand nourishment at Stockton Beach.

"This information confirms the need for sand to be continually replenished on Stockton Beach, which we've known for some time, but it also prioritises this scheme over other options like an artificial headland or artificial reef to provide the buffer our coastline needs,” Ms Whitcher said.

"Some people in the community would have preferred an artificial reef or artificial headland.

“However, the economic benefit analysis confirms that sand nourishment is the most costeffective scheme and is less intrusive on the environment.

"Now we want to see the preferred sand nourishment management scheme implemented as soon as possible."

City of Newcastle consultants also presented the Community Liaison Group with results of a Coastal Inundation Report, which identifies and maps the present and future coastal inundation hazard at Stockton from tides, surge and dynamic, wave-driven water levels that lead to over wash and overtopping of coastal barriers.

The findings further highlight the need

Sand Nourishment For Stockton Beach

THE coastline at Stockton has been constantly battered by weather, with erosion of the beach threatening buildings and businesses.

Now there is a sand nourishment program underway to replace the sand which has been washed out to sea.

Coastal erosion is an issue along the eastern seaboard.

For Stockton Beach an ongoing program of sand nourishment is the best way to provide a buffer for the coastline and beach amenity at Stockton, according to a City of Newcastle evaluation which considered a range of options for long term coastal management.

City of Newcastle presented the outcomes of the Evaluation Report to the Stockton Community Liaison Group at a community meeting in Stockton which found that following an initial

to implement the mass sand nourishment strategy, outlined in the Stockton Coastal Management Program 2020, which will mitigate this risk within the medium term.

City of Newcastle’s next step is to progress discussions about funding the coastal management scheme with the State Government, which established the Deputy Premier’s Stockton Beach Taskforce to provide advice and recommendations on issues including sand sourcing and to seek priority capital and operational funding.

In addition to managing the Stockton coastline, the newly formed Newcastle Coastal Management Working Group will consider coastal management of the entire 14 kilometres of coastline in the Newcastle local government area as well as the Hunter Estuary as Coastal Management Programs for these areas are developed in 2022-23.

Risk Of Purchasing Dangerous Toys

“The NSW Government is working to ensure these toys never reach the market, and if they do, it is important that consumers are educated enough not to give them to kids where they could become lethal.”

Some of the toys that have been confiscated this year and are scheduled to be destroyed include: a penguin cigarette lighter; toy guns and other toys with choking hazard projectiles or easily removable small parts; sponge toys with extendable string pieces that are strangling hazards; magnet toys with choking hazard small magnet balls; a ‘crown hat’ decoration

Of those, 279, or 72 percent, related to toys bought online.

"When shopping for Christmas toys and gifts online this year, purchasers need to take a minute to think about whether or not this toy could pose a hazard to their little ones,” Mr Anderson said.

“Each year we see a range of toys that are dangerous or inappropriate, from things that can shoot, choke, cut or burn, there are many toys out there that should not make their way into the hands of a child.”

According to child safety organisation Kidsafe, “In Australia, around 20 children per week are admitted to hospital because they have ingested a button battery and children aged 0-5 years are particularly vulnerable.

“I have lobbied long and hard for this change, and I am pleased that practices will finally have access to a wider pool of doctors to increase their workforce.

“This will also come as a relief to patients, many of whom struggle to find a GP,” Ms Swanson said.

Twelve months ago, Ms Swanson met with the previous Minister for Regional Health Mark Coulton and medical practices on the Tomaree Peninsula of Port Stephens to discuss the difficulties they were facing recruiting doctors.

Since then, she has also met with current Minister for Regional Health, David Gillespie, and made a submission to a Senate Inquiry into GP shortages.

Surgeries in Nelson Bay have been advised that changes will come into effect from 1 January 2022 for practices in areas deemed MM 3 and MM 4 that will give them automatic Distribution Priority Area (DPA)

classification.

“This means it will be easier for them to recruit doctors who have trained overseas or under Australia-trained bonded doctors with return of service obligations.

“This change has been a long time coming and this is a great start to relieving the pressure placed on practices who reach breaking point during the tourist season when they are inundated by visitors who need to see a doctor,” Ms Swanson said.

Although this change relieves many doctors and staff members who were leaving practices because of burn-out, Ms Swanson will continue working to support other regional communities who are facing the same issues.

“I am pleased to finally see the Morrison Government has recognised this problem and acted but the changes do not offer relief for doctors in other areas and I will continue to advocate for those practices and their patients,” Ms Swanson said.

LOCAL communities are being prioritised for Federal disaster resilience funding under a new program which opened last Friday.

with flammable plastic leaves; battery operated toys with easily openable battery cavities, giving children easy access to choking hazard batteries; a battery operated toy duck that lays choking hazard plastic eggs; and small ‘pen’ batteries that are a choking hazard.

There are simple steps consumers can take to ensure the gifts they buy are safe.

Do your research before buying Christmas toys and make sure they are compliant, safe, and age appropriate.

Consumers who have inadvertently bought an unsafe toy are entitled to a refund and are able to report businesses for unsafe toys.

If they are unable to resolve the problem with the shop,

they can lodge a complaint with NSW Fair Trading.

Mr Anderson said the NSW Government routinely visits businesses to check product safety.

“Earlier this year we issued a fine after inspectors found choking hazards and flammable pyjamas at a toy shop in Cabramatta.

“We also seized and destroyed the dangerous stock,” Mr Anderson said.

“To everyone out there shopping for toys, have a very Merry Christmas but do take a minute to consider the toys you are buying and let’s keep our kids safe.”

PFAS Study On Health Impacts

THE RAAF Base is the source of the PFAS contamination at Williamtown.

The community has been left devastated by the contaminated land, with children unable to play on their lawns safely.

Those living on the rural properties have been advised not to eat their own produce, yet they can sell it into the food chain for the rest of us to ingest.

A research team led by The Australian National University (ANU) has released findings from a major epidemiological study funded by the Department of Health, which examined the potential health impacts of PFAS in three Australian

communities.

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are man-made chemicals found in a range of products, including firefighting foam and nonstick cookware.

There are many different types of PFAS chemicals, all of which last for a long time in the environment and in the bodies of people who are exposed.

Despite many international studies looking into PFAS, there is uncertainty about their health effects in people.

This leaves those living in the red zone in limbo. The values of their properties have been reduced yet they don’t know with any certainty if staying on their land will damage their health.

The study examined three communities with environmental PFAS exposure; Katherine in the Northern Territory, Oakey in Queensland and Williamtown in New South Wales.

All three communities were affected by historic use of firefighting foams containing PFAS on nearby Defence Force bases.

Overall, there was clear evidence of elevated blood serum concentrations of PFAS in residents and workers in the PFASaffected communities, and of increased psychological distress in the three exposed communities.

“The main factors associated with people having higher levels of PFAS in their blood were the

length of time they had lived in the town, whether they regularly drank bore water or ate locally-grown foods and if they had worked with firefighting foams in the past,” study lead Professor Kirk from the Australian National University (ANU) said.

“In exposed communities, one third of people reported being ‘very’ or ‘extremely’ concerned about their health, including one in five people who had serious concerns about their mental health.

“We did identify an association between higher PFAS levels in blood and higher cholesterol, which has been reported in other studies internationally.”

The evidence for other adverse health outcomes was generally limited.

For the majority of health outcomes studied, findings were consistent with previous studies that have not conclusively identified causative links between PFAS and health.

“Based on health records collected over many years, we noted higher rates of some health conditions in individual PFAS-affected communities, compared to communities without known PFAS contamination.

“However, we can’t rule out that these findings were due to chance or important factors that we couldn’t measure,” Associate Professor Rosemary Korda, a leading data linkage expert from ANU said.

Researchers from the Australian National University led the PFAS Health Study team, which included international

Sharon Blunt of the Soldiers Point Lions Club told News Of The Area, “With many of our projects not able to operate due to Covid we had reduced avenues to provide all the funding that could assist with school projects.

“We approached Bobs Farm Public School with the needs for their local school

and their response that the greatest benefit for them was to purchase quality and modern furniture for their newly painted library.”

Technology isn’t cheap and the Soldiers Point Lions sought assistance from the Australian Lions Foundation to fund the $9600 project for the students.

The club identified that the school community

would benefit by having the furniture in before the children returned to school after such a long absence due to the Covid isolation.

The Soldiers Point Lions Club and the Australian Lions Foundation shared the cost with each organisation contributing $4,800 to furnish the school library.

To celebrate the transformation of the library Soldiers Point Lions Club members Sharon and

Garry Blunt, Bob Cramp, Lloyd Jaenke, Lions District Governor Glenys Francis and Ken Hallam, Director of the Australian Lions Foundation, attended Bobs Farm Public School to see the outcome of the combined project.

They were warmly greeted by the Principal Megan Elliott who was excited to show the school's modern furniture.

She said that the children and teaching

experts on epidemiology, environmental chemistry, cancer, and statistics.

The Australian Government Department of Health funded the study.

Chief Medical Officer Professor Paul Kelly said, “The Department of Health considers this study to be an important step in better understanding PFAS exposure and potential health effects in Australia.

“The consistency of the findings of the ANU study with previous studies that have not identified direct links between PFAS and adverse health outcomes is encouraging.

“This study is the first significant piece of Australian research of this kind and we thank all those individuals who participated.”

Give A Loved One A Koala This Christmas!

IF you haven’t done your Christmas shopping yet, you can’t go past supporting an iconic species by purchasing merchandise that funds the care of koalas in need in the Port Stephens region.

Port Stephens Koala Hospital is located within the Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary.

The hospital is a not-for-profit which is run mostly by volunteers.

Port Stephens Koala Hospital Volunteer CEO Leah Anderson told News Of The Area, “We are still able to take a donation via Return and Earn so your Christmas cheer can support the local koala population when you recycle.

“We have some new merchandise items including gift cards, a tote bag and tea towels featuring Maree (Maree is in care as she is blind), or of course you can adopt a koala.”

You can find the Port Stephens Koala Hospital merchandise on their website.

Port Stephens Koala Hospital is a totally separate operation to the Sanctuary

which includes glamping, sculptures and the skywalk.

The hospital is there to rescue, rehabilitate and, wherever possible, release the koalas that come into care.

“We have the best koala vet in the country, two veterinary nurses and a head leafer.”

The Port Stephens Koala Hospital relies on 180 community volunteers.

Some work in the pens, others go out and collect a selection of leaves for the koalas.

Leaves are collected every other day and supplied to the koalas fresh daily.

The hospital is seeking funding to embark on and participate in koala breeding programs.

They are already working closely with Taronga Zoo and Newcastle University and they envisage that they will be working with both organisations as the breeding program is undertaken.

Visitors now have the opportunity to interact with educational volunteer Ambassadors who are able to enhance visits to the site.

Stay of execution for Raymond Terrace deer

IN what is perhaps deemed by some as a Christmas miracle, Port Stephens Council has decided to delay the culling of the iconic deer in Raymond Terrace until the new year.

Brock Lamont, Strategy and Environment Section Manager, said that due to predicted wet weather and conditions of the ground surrounding Beaton Avenue and Irrawang Swamp, the decision was made to delay the proposed deer cull until the new year.

Previously, a letter was sent by Council to residents of Raymond Terrace to notify

them of the proposed deer cull and to solicit feedback from residents on the local deer population.

“Following the communications sent to residents, Council was contacted by a total of ten members of the community,” explained Mr Lamont.

“The responses were varied however the majority were supportive and understanding of the need for a program to control the deer.”

According to data from requests to Council to remove the deer from the reserve, there have been at least five collisions with deer in 2021.

This is an increase from

an average of one or two collisions per year during the last decade.

There have also been reports of near misses with vehicles and deer, as well as damage to fences and property.

Other residents, however, were not convinced by the council’s reasons for the cull.

Raymond Terrace resident Gail Thompson has lived in the area for 21 years and says that this is the first time she has read or heard that the deer were causing issues in the area.

PORT Stephens residents got a chance to enjoy their first ever Doggy Day Out at Robinson Reserve over the weekend.

Dogs and their owners enjoyed a great day with interactions with National Parks and Wildlife, Port Stephens Council and of course plenty of four-legged friends.

Kelly Hammond, one of the founding members of Birubi Paws told News Of The Area, “On behalf of Birubi Paws a huge thanks to Jay and Elizabeth from Port Stephens Council!

“Our first doggie day out was truly successful.”

She went on to thank Ranger Dan and the staff from National Parks for sharing their knowledge and passion for Worimi Country.

Saturday was blustery with strong onshore winds, however the weather didn't stop the four-legged friends enjoying free treats and learning new skills.

“We look forward to next year as the event grows,” she said.

There are plans to grow the event with new activities including best dressed dog on the day in the future.

Port Stephens Council, asking, “...if they [the deer] are such an issue and a danger, why isn’t there more than ONE sign up to warn motorists either along Newline Road, or Beaton Avenue?”

After reading an article about Queensland’s Lyell Deer Sanctuary in the latest issue of Australian Women’s Weekly, Ms Thompson contacted its owner, Kelly Prisk, for advice.

“The article [in the Australian Women’s Weekly] demonstrated how beautiful, loving and gentle these animals are and how they needed to be protected and saved,” Ms Thopson told News Of The Area.

“It is not the deer’s fault that they were introduced to Australia as game animals back in the 19th Century, and then people decided to breed them.”

The article explained at this time of the year, it is their breeding season, and therefore there is an increased presence of young fawns.

“The Port Stephens Council call them pests, but I, and others, feel that they should be allowed to live, along with the kangaroos, koalas, foxes, possums, turtles, and echidna’s [sic] that also make their way to the roadside edge in this area.

“I don’t believe that the

council would start to shoot the kangaroos that graze at the edge of the road in the night, the only difference being that they are classed as native, and the deers are introduced.”

“The deers [sic] are majestic animals, not vicious, but loving and the cull should be stopped before it starts.”

A petition is being circulated on change.org and at the time of writing, currently sits at 309 signatures.

“Rohypnol is prescribed for insomnia in Australia, and in response to its misuse as a date rape drug, the pharmaceutical company Roche recently changed its formulation.

“Its availability and tablet strength have been reduced, and it now releases a bright blue dye in liquid, with the aim of making it more difficult for potential date rape offenders to abuse.

“However, generic versions of the drug which do not contain blue dye are still available.

“Research in the United States points to a range of date rape drugs, and there

is evidence to suggest other drugs besides Rohypnol and GHB are used in Australia to facilitate sexual assault.”

However the trend which has seen women injected with a very fine needle is just one more reason for women to take additional care when on a night out.

“Date rape drugs commonly result in a loss of consciousness and memory, so victims often do not report the crime.

“For this reason, investigation and prosecution of drug facilitated sexual assault cases is difficult as identification of suspects and details of the attack are difficult to establish.”

AN alarming new trend has hit the Hunter with women reporting that they have been injected with a drug while out at bars – the practice is called needle spiking.

Needle spiking has been prevalent overseas for some time, however there have been several recent reports in the Hunter.

The Australian Institute of Criminology states, “Drugs have been used to facilitate sexual assault in Australia and abroad.

“Offenders sometimes covertly spike their victim’s drink in order to incapacitate them, typically at a party or a bar.

Bleed4Blue Campaign launches

THE NSW Police Force are rolling up their sleeves for 2021’s ‘Bleed4Blue’ blood drive.

‘Bleed4Blue’ is an annual, three-month law enforcementfocused blood drive that was launched in 2018 following the stabbing of Detective Sergeant John Breda at Maroubra on Australia Day 2018.

Now in its fourth year, NSWPF has launched Operation ‘Bleed4Blue’ with employees, family, friends and the community encouraged to visit a Lifeblood donor centre across the state to donate lifesaving blood products.

In addition to the summer drive, NSWPF will be attempting to break the record for the number of donations in a single day.

The highest donation total

recorded by a Lifeblood Team in a single day in Australia is 230 successful donations.

Lifeblood Centres have thrown their support behind the challenge, turning their centres blue, wearing blue clothes, and even serving blue refreshments to donors.

Saving lives is part of the job for officers, explains Assistant Commissioner Steve Hegarty who helped launch today’s challenge and is urging police to take part.

“We take our police operations very seriously, and this blood drive is no different,” said Assistant Commissioner Hegarty.

“As first responders, police know all too well how important blood donations are for people who have been injured as a result of crime, crashes or accidents.

to donate life-saving blood products, we can help to save many more lives.”

The Bleed4Blue drive is run in partnership with Australian Red Cross Lifeblood and was established after Det

Sgt John Breda lost almost twelve litres of blood when he was stabbed during a police operation.

The medical team used more than 100 bags of blood to keep him alive, including 48 bags in one six-hour surgery.

Each week, Lifeblood requires 31,000 donations to meet demand which is at a ten-year-high.

December is a busy time and elective surgeries are being rescheduled postlockdown, so blood drives provide life-saving donations.

“The need for blood never takes a break and donated blood will be needed every day between now and New Year’s Eve to help treat many sick and seriously ill Australians,” said Carley Byrnes, Lifeblood.

“With hospital demand for blood the highest it’s been in nearly a decade, December is the time for all of us to do what police do so well – roll up our sleeves and lend an arm when it’s most needed.”

During the 2020 campaign, a total of 4,419 donations were made across the country, with the NSW Police Force making 1,126 donations, helping to save up to 3,378 lives.

The ‘Bleed4Blue’ campaign will run from Wednesday 1 December until the end of February 2022 and challenges police from across Australia to take part to see which state or territory can donate the most blood.

Since its inception, the Bleed4Blue campaign has generated more than 15,093 blood donations and helped save over 45,000 lives.

Car seized following Blockade Australia protests

ON Monday 6 December 2021, the NSW police confirmed that they have taken and intend to auction the car and personal property of Sasha, a 26-yearold climate activist.

Sasha was arrested and sentenced on suspicion of being involved in Blockade Australia’s mobilisation against the world’s largest coal port in Newcastle.

Sasha was arrested on Wednesday 17 November driving in the Hunter Wetlands National Park.

He's On His Way! WELL girls and boys, Santa is packing his sacks with lots of lollies for the good boys and girls of Tilligerry and will be coming down a street near you on Saturday 18 December.

There are a few changes this year and he will not be visiting some streets so you might have to walk up to the corner to get the lollies.

Santa comes to Port Stephens

SANTA will be making an appearance at a number of areas in Port Stephens, thanks to the local fire brigades.

Raymond Terrace The lollies are packed, Santa is booked in, and Raymond Terrace Fire and Rescue are ready to go from 8:30AM next Sunday 19 December.

As with last year the brigade will be travelling with fire trucks, with Santa on his Harley Davidson motorcycle throwing lollies to children throughout the streets of Raymond Terrace and

Heatherbrae.

Estimated times for each part of the area are included via the brigade’s Facebook page and there will be a live tracker on the day.

Williamtown/ Salt Ash On Saturday 18 December Santa will be borrowing the fire trucks from Williamtown/ Salt Ash Rural Fire Brigade for his annual Santa run around our area.

He will be waving, handing out lollies and wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas.

I WATCHED firsthand Leah Anderson (although not sworn in as our no.1 East Ward Councillor) stand with the community last week using her business negotiations and love of the environment.

This gives me confidence our community will have its say!

Leah is negotiating a community consultation with Bannisters as requested, with the time and date to be announced.

It seems the 2011 approved development that includes 94 permanent residents at Bannisters is set in stone and without a design and community consultation understandably the locals feel left out.

Like the Anna Bay helicopter DA rearing its head whilst we prepare for Christmas, this DA seems sneaky!

Not everyone at this community meeting was concerned about the height but concerned about the ever-increasing number of cars on the only road in and out of Soldiers Point Road and the loss of native habit and community space.

This 120-million-dollar investment by the developer/owner is difficult to visualise if you know the current building, it’s not a solid block.

The GM is prepared to share and discuss with the community what’s going on and understands fully the importance of working with the locals.

Seawall Collapse DEAR News Of The Area,

I WRITE regarding the deterioration and now collapse of a timber seawall at Kangaroo Point, 111 Soldiers Point Rd. The Port Stephens Council q

were notified of the impending problem in April 2021 and again a few weeks ago, but they chose to do nothing.

Now the collapsed wall is a public danger to the many people who use the path from beach to grassed area.

The existing wall was perfectly adequate for 35 years and only needed a few upright logs to be replaced.

Thankfully one of the elderly local residents was able to pull most of the timber out of the water.

AUSTRALIA is about to embark on a national plan to cater to the needs of those with disabilities.

The NSW Government has welcomed the release of the Australian Disability Strategy 2021-2031, announced in conjunction with the International Day for People with Disability.

Minister for Families, Communities and Disability Services Alister Henskens said, “The disability community has seen significant change in the past decade, and it is appropriate that governments continue to update their frameworks for creating more inclusive and accessible communities,” Mr Henskens said.

“Importantly, both the national strategy and the NSW plan focus on supporting all people with disability, recognising that not every person with disability will access support under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).”

Australia’s Disability Strategy outlines seven areas for action, including: employment and financial security; inclusive homes and communities; safety, rights and justice; personal and community support; education and learning; health and wellbeing; and community attitudes.

The release coincides with the International Day of People with Disability, which is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the achievements and contributions of more than 1.3 million people with disability in NSW. “NSW leads the nation when it comes to supporting people with disability – we were the first state to implement a Disability Inclusion Plan and have been at the forefront of rolling out of the NDIS,” Mr Henskens said.

“We will continue working hard to improve services and support for people with disability to help increase their social and economic participation across the State.”

The Physical Disability Council of NSW said the Strategy sets an ambitious agenda of priorities but does not answer recent calls to address high rates of poverty experienced by people with disabilities and those who care for them, who rely on income support.

CEO of the Physical Disability Council, Ms Serena Ovens said, ‘The new Australia’s Disability Strategy appears to be a step forwards in meeting Australia’s commitments under the UNCRPD by increasing the accountability of the broader community in realizing the rights of our members.

“While there is much that is positive about the Strategy, it has a clear agenda on supporting those who can study and work.

“It is important that the Strategy champions the rights of all people with disability, irrespective of who they are or what they can or cannot do.

“We look forward to working with the NSW government to ensure set targets are monitored and outcomes achieved.”

Vouchers For Kids

PARENTS are being urged to take advantage of the state’s popular Active Kids program, with tens of millions of dollars worth of vouchers still to be redeemed this year due to the COVID lockdown.

And in a December double, Premier Dominic Perrottet also encouraged NSW families to dive into the new First Lap learn to swim program.

“Now that sport is back up and running, we’re keen to remind parents to use these excellent NSW Government cost-saving measures so kids can get back to playing sport and learning to swim without breaking the family budget,” Mr Perrottet said.

“With COVID restrictions stopping sport for several months, around 430,000 children are yet to use their Active Kids vouchers this year, meaning there is around $86 million worth of vouchers still up for grabs.”

Every school-enrolled child in NSW is eligible for two

$100 Active Kids vouchers per year towards the cost of sport and active recreation fees.

Minister for Digital and Customer Service Victor Dominello said the $100 First Lap learn to swim voucher and Active Kids program are among dozens of NSW Government savings to help to ease cost of living pressures for households.

THE last of this year's Men's Championships was played at Soldiers Point Bowling Club last week.

After defeating Dave Tennant and Pete Smith in the Semi-finals of the Consistency Singles, Roy Sutherland and Daniel Collaros played in the Final in a very high standard of bowls.

In this competition, the four closest bowls to the jack are awarded points.

On several occasions in this match, all eight bowls by the two players were within

one metre of the jack such was the standard of play.

Roy took an early lead and, despite being pressed

by Daniel, sustained the lead winning by 156 points to 124. Congratulations go to Roy Sutherland for winning the last Men's Championship in this Covid year in which competitive bowls has been severely restricted.

THE formal opening of Nelson Bay Croquet Club’s new courts on 3 December 2021 seemed strange as the Club has been playing on them for over 18 months – yet another COVID impact on the Club’s operations.

The development of the two new courts was made possible by financial contributions and grants from the NSW State Government, Port Stephens Council and Tomaree Sports Council, plus a significant contribution from the Club itself. It was, then, fitting that Kate Washington MP, State Member for Port Stephens, was available to officially open the courts, in the presence of Councillor Glen Dunkley, representing the Mayor Ryan Palmer, Bruce Scott, President of Tomaree Sports Council, and Councillor John Nell.

With around 100 members, the Club is the 5 th largest croquet club in NSW by playing numbers but, until the development of the new courts, was one of only
