Brandy Hill Quarry expansion decision postponed until end of October FROM Page 1

Minister Sussan Ley has delayed her decision until October 30, giving further hope to koala campaigners.

The proposed project would clear 50 hectares of koala habitat in Port Stephens and has faced stern opposition from some local residents.

Member for Port Stephens, Kate Washington, praised the efforts of local campaigners in lobbying the Federal Environment Minister.

A host of celebrities have also backed the cause on social media, most recently Canadian singer K.D Lang who tweeted the Environment Minister saying, ‘Due to the bush fires, koalas are on a steep decline and are facing extinction in New South Wales, due to habitat loss & fragmentation. To save koalas Australian gov must act now to prevent

their homes from being bulldozed.’

Australian music royalty Olivia NewtonJohn and Jimmy Barnes have also been vocal in their support of blocking the quarry expansion.

“The poor koalas are copping it again, you’d think after last year’s bushfires, bulldozing 52 hectares of their habitat wouldn’t be on anyone’s radar. Please don’t take any more from them,” said Mr Barnes.

COVID-19 has disrupted lives and business in an unprecedented way.

For many small businesses this leaves business owners vulnerable and in search of help.

Finding the way through red tape and finding ways to pivot a business isn’t easy, neither are dealing with the stress and worries around the future of business after COVID-19.

There are over 450 small businesses operating in Port Stephens.

They operate in a range of sectors including health, tourism, hospitality business services and retail.

The Big Impact Expo is a free event which is being held online for small businesses in Port Stephens.

The event is the result of a collaboration between member driven business organisations from across Port Stephens and will be held online on 27 October.

"Small Business - Big Impact" is being driven

by Port Stephens Council, Tomaree Business Chamber, Port Stephens Women in Business, Destination Port Stephens and Spark CoWork and is being delivered with the support of the NSW Government.

The event will deliver

a day of inspiration and information to support small businesses during these challenging times.

Tomaree Business Chamber President, Leah Anderson said, “It has been wonderful to see all of the organisations representing small businesses in Port Stephens come together and work on this event.

“This collaboration means that all of our local businesses will benefit from the resources and content available on the day to assist with COVID-19 recovery

and help reignite the Port Stephens economy.”

Sessions are designed to deliver a real benefit and strategies attendees can put into action.

Virtual attendees can sign in and listen in on keynote speaker Stephen Griffiths presenting on Developing Resilience in Difficult Times.

There will also be information on how Council is supporting business post COVID and virtual breakout rooms where attendees

can participate in Q&A sessions.

Attendees can virtually network and access one on one appointments with business advisors on the day.

Rebecca Morley of Spark Co-work told News Of The Area, “There are over 20 individual topical speakers on the program as well as our keynote speaker, Stephen Griffiths.

“It doesn’t matter what size business you are, we encourage everyone to jump online and register

and to come along between 10-2pm on 27 October.

“The recordings will also be available online after the event,” she said.

A MAN was due to appear in court on Sunday 11 October, charged after crashing an unregistered car into a house in the Hunter region.

About 9.20pm on Saturday 10 October, officers from Port Stephens-Hunter Police

District were patrolling in the Raymond Terrace area, following reports of a suspicious vehicle.

Police observed a silver Holden Commodore travelling on Links Road; however, it drove away in the opposite direction.

A short time later,

the Holden was located crashed into a home on Scott Close, Raymond Terrace.

The crash caused extensive damage to the front concrete veranda of the home, estimated to be valued at more than $40,000.

The driver, a 23-yearold man, was arrested and taken to John Hunter Hospital for mandatory testing.

He was later taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station and charged with drive recklessly/ furiously or speed/

manner dangerous, never licensed person drive vehicle on road and use unregistered registrable class A motor vehicle on road.

The man was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Bail Court on Sunday.

Participation is easy.

You will need to count the number of each species you spot within the 20 minute period.

For example, you might see four Australian Magpies, two Rainbow

If you can identify birds by their calls, please include these in your count, but if you aren’t sure of a bird without seeing it, please exclude it rather than making a guess.

Sean Dooley, BirdLife Australia, Editor of Australian Birdlife Magazine said, “This is an event for all Australians to participate in.

“You can count at any time of the day but morning is best because the birds have just woken up and are more active.”

“The most exciting thing is that we can still save the ones at risk of going extinct.

“I’ve seen this through working at Bird Life Australia that we can turn that around,” he said.

It’s that time of the year when we get busy counting bird life.

National Bird Week 19-25 October is a celebration of the unique birds that we have many of which aren’t found anywhere else in the world.

Go Pink For Breast Cancer

By Marian SAMPSON OCTOBER is breast cancer awareness month and it is a month that normally sees the ladies of the Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Services holding a massive Pink Breakfast.

Unfortunately, due to restrictions the annual fundraiser is not going ahead this year.

The committee wanted to find a new way to let men and women diagnosed with breast cancer know that there is help at hand.

They have turned to Lifeline on Magnus Street who have generously allowed a pink themed window for the month which was dressed by the

support group.

They have also secured an advertisement inside the bus shelter on Donald Street in Nelson Bay which features their new colour of pink and new logo.

Judy Watton told News Of The Area, “Our fundraising has been limited, but we have been lucky with some donations so we are still able to help our patients and carry on.”

The Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group had four new patients diagnosed and referred to them for services this month.

The group organises transport to the Mater and Genesis in Lake Macquarie where most Tomaree based patients need to travel for chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

They also provide food

vouchers where needed, as most patients need to stop work.

It is not just women that get breast cancer, the service is currently assisting one male patient.

The most important message that Judy has for everyone is to get their breasts checked.

“The mobile service will be at Soldiers Point Bowling Club through October and November and it is a great time to book in for a check,” she said.

Judy urges women in particular to note any changes no matter how old or young they are and to get them checked out.

Early detection usually reflects in less invasive treatment.

ICE water panel member and Exeter University visiting Professor Chris Binnie, was highly impressed by Gilghi’s value creation and its applicability to a bigger sustainability picture.

“Gilghi is a genuinely new project with a novel technological approach; the integration of the work of water process engineering

and electrical engineering and solar panels was particularly pleasing. The solution provides a reliable and potable supply of water in a sustainable manner that does not increase CO2 emission,” Professor Binnie said.

“We are honoured to be globally recognised for the innovative products and solutions we design and manufacture in Australia that makes a meaningful improvement to people’s lives,” said Mr Henderson.

Gilghi’s international honour follows a haul of Australian award wins in 2020 including Australian Engineering Excellence Award, Good Design Award, and the Australian Water Association Award.

By Mitchell LEES A WAVE, a walk on the beach or some morning yoga is sometimes all it takes to begin a conversation between strangers, friends or loved ones.

That is the premise of OneWave Port Stephens and with the launch of their first Fluro Salty Saturday at Robinson Reserve on World Mental Health Day last Saturday, it was indeed a glowing success.

It was a brisk Birubi morning with the westerly blowing but it didn’t halt the resolve of those who attended the 6:30am start as 30 plus constituents dressed up in their fluro attire to tackle mental health issues and raise awareness.

The event saw people come together from all walks as they sat to talk about their own mental health challenges in a judgement-free and casual environment before enjoying a wave, some yoga or just a coffee and a catch-up.

“I am really proud of what we have started and I was very emotional about the people that attended and just how many people are struggling,” said Kaz. “We had complete strangers open up to us and tell us their story.

“I really hope we have helped them just a little bit and showed them they are not alone.”

EVERYONE who lives in Port Stephens knows that tourism has been strong over the NSW school holidays.

The traffic along Victoria Parade and queues in coffee shops have been a testament to the visitation which has supported businesses during these difficult times.

Eileen Gilliand of Destination Port Stephens told News Of The Area, “The long weekend in October and the school holidays have been a traditionally strong time for Port Stephens but this year it has just been that little bit

“Upgrading this runway will provide the confidence and hope at a time that it is most needed. More importantly, it will deliver very tangible benefits.

“Ours is the largest regional economy in Australia and the airport is ready to step up and play a key role in ensuring it remains so.

“Importantly the window of opportunity for this upgrade is now. The funding needs to be confirmed before the next budget cycle, with a drop-dead date in the first quarter of next year.

“With that in mind, we

Beach boats banned

IN the second wave, pardon the pun, of foreshore cleanups, boats and other craft not stored in council racks are to be removed.

Boats, usually dinghies, left on the grassy verge will have a luminous sticker fixed to them giving their owners fair warning that they will be removed and disposed of within a certain time-frame.

Commenting on the initiative, Cr Steve Tucker said that Tanilba Bay would be targeted as part of Port Stephens Council's second

sweep of beaches to improve public access and 'clean up' the public parks and reserves.

“Council has boat racks available at a nominal cost and these are where the dinghies are to be stored,” he said.

“There is no place for the storage of larger craft such as sailing boats,” he added.

“Our foreshore reserves are becoming incredibly popular on weekends and during school holidays as tranquil places to escape from the lockdown restrictions.

“We want to present them in the finest state of upkeep,” he stated.

$25,000 grant for crafts people

PATRÓN Tequila wants to invite creators and innovators in the design, fashion and hospitality industries to apply for PATRÓN 60 Hands – Pay It Forward, a $25,000 grant to help them continue their craft.

PATRÓN 60 Hands is a national call out to those in the handmade fields of design (sculptors, ceramicists, industrial designers, landscape designers, sustainable designers, interior designers), fashion (tailoring, fashion and jewellery designers) and hospitality industries (chefs).

To apply for the grant, makers are asked to submit a short video explaining what craftsmanship means to them, and how the $25,000 grant would help them support their craft.

Six judges who are dominant in their own fields of craft will be on hand to judge the grant applications and will offer invaluable insight into each of their crafts and industries.

These judges consist of design and architecture connoisseur and comedian Tim Ross, Camilla Freeman-Topper and Marc Freeman, founders of renowned Australian fashion label CAMILLA AND MARC, architects Ingrid Richards and Adrian Spence of award-winning Brisbane firm Richards & Spence and the architects behind The Calile Hotel, founder and creative director of White Story, Fiona Myer, industrial designer and founder of international surfboard brand HaydenShapes, Hayden Cox, and ceramicist and Artichoke magazine editor Cassie Hansen.

“I’m delighted to be a judge of this wonderful and timely initiative, and I’m looking forward to engaging with the work and ethos of those who enter,” said Tim Ross about the PATRÓN 60 Hands – Pay It Forward campaign.

“Australia is a creative hub for some of the most brilliant minds and artisans and we are looking forward to seeing the work that evaluates as part of this important initiative.

We’re honoured to be part of a program that recognises, nurtures and supports local talent,” said Camilla Freeman-Topper and Marc Freeman.

Craftspeople who wish to apply for the PATRÓN 60 Hands grant are invited to submit an application via the website at www.patronau.com.

Applications are open now, and close at midnight on Friday 23 October.

Boats to be removed from Tanilba Bay.

We’re extending the JobKeeper Payment until 28 March 2021.

The Australian Government is extending the temporary JobKeeper Payment to the end of March 2021. From 28 September, businesses must meet the turnover test and submit their declarations by the 14th of each month.

There will be two new payment rates – one for those who work more than 20 hours per week in the relevant period, and another for those who work less. The employee eligibility date has also changed to 1 July, meaning some businesses could claim for more staff.

It’s part of our plan to keep business in business, and Australians in jobs.

‘Is there a ‘best’ way to make a winning offer?’

WHEN you’re ready to make an offer, you’re at the ‘pointy’ end of the house hunting process and it can be both exciting and daunting. Making a winning offer is all about price and timing. The majority of sales in our region are Private Treaty, so asking the Agent if any other offers have been received and if so, what is the highest offer that has been rejected gives you a good guide to where you need to position your offer. You could make a huge offer – asking price or above – but it’s crucial that in doing this, you’re not paying too much. Have your finances sorted. It’s pointless making a ‘winning offer’ only to have finance delayed – or worse – declined. Justify your verbal offer with a letter outlining why you’ve made that offer, including sale price comparisons with other recently sold properties of similar status.

While Agents represent the Vendor, without buyers, the whole process doesn’t work, so they also have your interests at heart.

Do your research, communicate openly and honestly, keep the process simple and you’ll win the Agent’s respect – and hopefully your dream property.

International White Cane Day OPINION Dear News Of The Area,

ON International White Cane Day (15 October), we at Guide Dogs NSW/ACT want to highlight the need for awareness of white canes.

White Cane Day was created to highlight the important role mobility assistance devices play in helping people with low vision or blindness lead safe and independent lives.

This year, our campaign is celebrating the fun, fearless and adventurous spirit of our young Clients and cane users who live life to the fullest, with many engaging in everything from skateboarding to gymnastics.

For many people with low vision and blindness, a white cane is one of the first tools they may learn how to use as part of orientation and mobility training, and for children, a white cane is often the key to their first experiences of independence and freedom. It is a tool they will count on throughout their life.

A white cane is the mobility tool of choice for the majority of Guide Dogs Clients because of its practicality and the way it can give sensory feedback about the surrounding environment, but also its importance as a visual signifier to others in the community of low vision and

blindness.

But right now, a white cane is more than a visual symbol that someone has low vision or blindness. It is also a visual symbol that the person using the white cane can’t easily maintain a 1.5-metre distance from others.

We’ve heard many stories from our Clients who are being increasingly cautious about what environments they travel in with their white cane, aware of the fact that they can’t easily see others to socially distance.

This International White Cane Day, we are asking the community to be aware of people using a white cane.

You can help them continue to move safely, confidently and independently through any environment, by giving them 1.5-metres of space.

YOU know, yesterday I went to the local shops and saw Christmas decorations and for the first time I just thought, bring it on!

Get this damn year over with.

The only people who seem to be vaguely benefiting are psychiatrists, bottle shops and, inexplicably, Donald Trump who, despite an inability to string a sentence together and a figure akin to a blancmange has, in his own words, 'passed the highest test, the highest standards ...' and is 'in great shape'.

No, he didn't confirm this via results from the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale along with some sort of Navy Seal challenge, he was simply reporting back following a helicopter joyride to a facility with around the clock mollycoddling and a cocktail of drugs.

I mean, who wouldn't be a bit euphoric?

I digress.

You and I both know that the Year 12 formal is an event that will one day be viewed through the prism of hindsight and some photos that are little pinpricks of humiliation helping you to recall crawling to receive your gift from the school (a spoon with its tempting 'esto fidelis' - be faithful to God - motto), hair dyed white-blonde in that delightful corpse look that was big in the 80s, and a formal partner who ended up being a male stripper.

What's not to love?

In a way, because expectations are so low this year, your daughter may be pleasantly surprised. Just do something to make the night extra special.

My own daughter has asked for just two ways to remember the occasion - a sassy pair of Louboutins and a hip flask.

This year, I may not only give in to that request, but make a double purchase so we can both have a little joy.

Let’s face it, the abbreviated filmed-at-home episodes of Graham Norton’s long-running talk show filmed earlier this year belong in a time capsule. At the same time, the Chartist movement threatens the monarchy and Victoria is forced to confront the possibility that her people may wish to end her reign. 2019 Logie Award winner Coleman continues to thrill as the rather vexed Queen.

Probus Club Wine ‘n’ Dine

SOCIAL distancing is posing challenges for community groups however the Probus Club of Fingal Bay have found ways that members can still get together while remaining COVID-19 safe.

The group of 20 was undeterred by social distancing, when the Probus Club opted for a different venue for the usual wine and dining event.

Julia Redlich told News Of The Area, “This time it was

held at Conroy Park on a sunny afternoon, and members arrived, happily armed with wine or alternatives.

“Dining was in the hands of the great folk at the Corlette Store who received our individual orders (and payments).

“It wasn’t long before they were delivered with super efficiency, almost cutting short our sampling of a selection of nibbles!” she exclaimed.

Julia believes that the fun and friendship that is the key

to the success of Probus was present.

Members are still missing the usual monthly meetings.

The members are looking forward to a time that general meetings can start there again, as well as the usual activities such as barbecues, dining out, booklovers meetings, wine appreciation and learning from guest speakers.

Anyone interested in joining the Probus Club of Fingal Bay will be more than welcome.

Worldwide tour stays local

By Ashley CHRYSLER MR SMALL’S worldwide tour has been running for the past 10 years, travelling to destinations across Australia.

The group was originally q David Brown with Glen Newman.

formed by Glen Newman; a bus driver and ex-football player with a great sense of humour, referred to by his friends as Mr Small, who rallied everyone together as a way to keep in touch with good friends and workmates.

Today, the group is made up of 12 members dispersed across towns and states.

The trip is normally run over four days and has involved everything from football matches and race meetings, to bowls, golf, or general touring.

The group was unable to do their regular trip this year due to COVID-19, so decided to bring the ‘tour’ to Bulahdelah.

Mr Small group member Peter Ellery, said that the

members all have a common belief that life is no rehearsal, and to embrace life.

“With the support of our wives and partners, we’ve been able to travel through life embracing these strong friendships and appreciate each other, while sharing all highs and lows,” he said.

“We’re here for one another.”

This year, the group gathered at Bulahdelah Golf Club for games of bowls and rugby golf, and raised funds for The McGrath Foundation.

“The Club even donated back our green fees to go to The McGrath Foundation,” said Mr Ellery.

“All in all, we had a lot of fun raising money for a very worthwhile charity in the process.”

“Life is so important and it’s best to share your experiences with good mates.”

Power Outage

IT was a scorching first day of finals footy for the Port Stephens Power AFL Juniors as they sailed into Warners Bay to try and stretch out their post-season campaigns.

In a worrying omen for

the day the Zooper Doopers sold out well before any of the Medowie-based teams got to run out on the pitch.

Always a bad sign of the temperature in the middle to greet the groms.

as the Warners Bay Bulldogs showed just how well drilled they were, easily winning 107 to 0.

The Bulldogs have had a few more years training and playing together and the scoreboard reflected that fact.

The girls have worked hard this season and are looking forward to being more competitive in 2021 with a bit more experience gained.

There was also little joy for the U11 boys who came up against some bigger opponents in the Newcastle City Sky Blues squad.

The Sky Blues used their bigger bodies to outstretch the Power overhead and came away 65 to 8 victors.

The Power U11’s fought hard but the Sky Blues outgunned them with booming long range kicks all

morning.

There was some joy for the Port Stephens teams however as the Nelson Bay Marlins saw the U13 boys and the U15 girls through to the last dance.

The U13 boys took on the Lake Macquarie Dockers and were able to hang on by 10 points winning 37 to 27 while the minor premiers in the Marlins U15 girls came up 24 to 9 victors over Newcastle

The blitz paid off with former NSW Country Cockatoo Paul Mlotkowski crashing over the line off of a delicate short ball deep in Griffins’ territory.

It took the scores to 24 to 0 with the kick successfully slotted by Tolhurst and when Tevita Qurovarua crashed through three defenders from the scrum base for a try the day was all over.

The Griffins grabbed a complimentary try in the dying stages for their efforts with the whistle sounding the scores 31 to 5 to the Marauders.

Marauders Coach Tim Lancaster praised a well rounded pre-finals performance.

“I was really impressed with our attacking shape and our ability to string multiple

phases together today,” said Lancaster.

“The Marauders always enjoy playing the Griffins and have a lot of shared history with the club.

“Moving forward there’s a key few areas we’ll need to fine tune through the week leading into next weekends’ finals series.”

The Marauders play Cooks

City White.

Both teams will line up next Sunday 18 October at Ferodale Oval, Medowie, in what is sure to be a blockbuster day of Grand Final footy.

Marauders Come Out Firing Against Griffins In Time For Finals FROM Page 20

Griffins from the get go as the Marauders pack powered up the park and through the Griffins’ piggies with Zane Stone, Tevita Qorovarua and Sam Holbert at the spearhead.

Medowie fly-half Jessey Bridge had the ball on a string as he placed the pill off his boot behind the Griffins line time after time to wear the opposition down.

With only five minutes gone the ball was spun wide to powerhouse winger Orisi Vosuqa who crashed through the Griffins defences to put the marauders up 7 to 0 as the kick was converted by Captain Eric Tolhurst.

From the restart there was no rest for the Griffins as

another piece of champagne popping play from the Marauders’ outside backs sent fullback Red Norton over for a try.

The score was 12 to 0 after 10 minutes of play, but if the Marauders thought they had it in the bag they were sorely reminded otherwise with the Griffins bouncing off the back fence and belting the Medowie men for the next 20 minutes.

Through some slick hands the Marauders were able to cross just before halftime when Brody Morley dusted the chalk to take scores to 17 to 0 at oranges.

At the restart the Marauders kicked up a gear with Mitch Powell, Jake Lightbody and Lex Takarua rumbling the ball through the Griffins’ trenches.
