He touched down on the runway at Newcastle Port Stephens Airport where he announced game changing funding for the airport which will see $66 million invested in widening the runway.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said, “It's great to be back in the Hunter - $66 million dollars will be announced in the Budget on Tuesday night by the Treasurer to invest in widening the runway here and various other works here at Newcastle Airport, to ensure that we can take larger flights here in Newcastle and we can back in the future of the

Subject to budget being passed, work will commence in August and be completed in 2022.

“What this will mean is jobs.”

It is estimated that the project will increase jobs throughout the Hunter with around 4,400 jobs being created half of which will be in the tourism industry.

“This will add more jobs in the Hunter and this will be the backup that is needed for the commercial side of the industry, the commercial side of the region, to really realise its potential.”

The project includes a seven and a half metre extension on either side of the runway, which will allow planes such as the Boeing 787, the Boeing 777, the Airbus A350 to land at the Newcastle Port Stephens Airport.

“These aircraft can carry between 251 and 382 people.

“The runway works will maximise the benefits of works already completed for

the terminal, to upgrade the international arrivals and departure processing facility.”

The government has committed some $3.8 billion to support the aviation sector since March of 2020.

“This will also support the works that are underway here and the projects and programmes that are being run in our Defence industry here, with the F-35s and other operations at Williamtown.

“So this is a win win win.

“It’s a win for the commercial aviation industry.

“It's a win for the Hunter and it's a win for the Defence operations that we run here from the Hunter,” said the Prime Minister.

Flying The Flag

By Tara CAMPBELL PORT Stephens Hunter Police District have set the precedent for all regional NSW Police Districts by joining only fifteen other Police stations in flying the Aboriginal flag.

On 4 May 2021, Raymond Terrace, Maitland and Nelson Bay Police stations joined the list.

The raising of the flag is part of the New South Wales Police forces efforts to improve relationships with Indigenous and First Nations communities, acknowledging the rich and important Indigenous history, whilst looking towards the future.

Raymond Terrace Police Station hosted the traditional smoking ceremony and Welcome To Country conducted by Maurice Perry to raise the flag.

Change In Aged Care Sector

WITH the Royal Commission into Aged Care in Australia findings damning there is a new push to improve the lot of Australians that find themselves in need of residential aged care.

This is considerable concern to residents of Port Stephens and the M ya l l

region which has a much higher than average age.

Recorded in the 2016 census, the mean age in Port Stephens was 45 years old.

People aged 65 years and over made up 22.9% of the population.

TANILBA Bay service station owner Jaz Saluja is deeply concerned about his family in India with the Covid-19 pandemic out of control.

Here, so far, the disease has claimed some 238,000 lives and infected at least 21 million people.

“My family is based around Indore which is in central India

and the pandemic has already affected two family members,” Jaz said.

“Both my cousin and aunt have been infected but thankfully they have recovered,” he added.

“We are very worried about my elderly parents who have visited us previously but in 2019 their visa application was put on hold.

“I can't see any chance of it being granted with the situation as q

intend to leave the sector within the next five years, because they are at breaking point.”

Homecare Packages have been increased and for many this is the gold standard of care that they would like to access, being able to stay in your own home rather than entering a facility is a positive option.

While Homecare Packages are generally delivered by aged care organisations, there are now platforms such as Mable.com.au that allow you to organise and recruit your own home care team.

One Port Stephens family that are accessing a Level 4 Homecare Package via a platform have found, “It is relatively easy to navigate and recruit people to deliver care and the carers tend to get paid more, so they are happy, and mum is happy to be able to stay at home, which she wouldn’t be able to do without the Homecare Package.”

Scott Morrison is being pressured to deliver more for the Aged Care Sector in the upcoming budget, which will be delivered Tuesday 11 May 2021.

A few days out from the Federal budget, Energy Minister Angus Taylor has announced $58.6 million for new gas projects, and released the government’s National Gas Infrastructure Plan; Interim Report.

However the Climate Council is convinced that gas is not the answer for the Hunter.

“The Morrison Government should not be funnelling taxpayer dollars into gas, and making longterm plans around an industry that’s driving climate change.

“Gas is already being outcompeted by clean, affordable, renewable energy,” said Climate Council Senior Researcher, Tim Baxter.

“This is yet another attempt from the Morrison Government to propup its expensive and unnecessary

During his visit to Williamtown last week the Prime Minister said, “I welcome the Tallawarra announcement.

“I think that's a great contribution to the task that we have to replace the capacity that will be lost as a result of Liddell.

“But the Energy Minister Angus Taylor and I know what the task is, and that means there's a lot more that still needs to be done.

“And that's what will be guiding our decision on Kurri Kurri.

“And as I said before, when I was here in the Hunter earlier in the year, this is about ensuring we have a gasfired recovery, and that's what the Hunter needs.

“And I can assure you we'll be taking decisions consistent with that, and when we’re in a position to make further announcements on those matters, then we enthusiastically will,” he said.

The Prime Minister also stood by his previous commitment that the offshore PEP11 gas exploration will not proceed stating, “That’s firm and absolute.”

PORT Stephens retirees are definitely back out and about and the Probus Club of Fingal Bay is no exception.

It doesn’t take much to get the members of this Probus Club to try something new.

Julia Redlich of the Probus Club of Fingal Bay told News Of The Area, “When a new restaurant opens locally assessment of worth is definitely needed.

“No surprise then when members of the Fingal Bay Probus Club set out for lunch at The Nelson Way, at The Landmark in Dowling Street.”

Julia and the other members at the lunch found a welcoming atmosphere which inspired the usual fun and friendship as choices were laid before them.

“Several approached the special $15 lunchtime menu selection, while others opted to indulge in offerings from the main menu, wines and other drinks were readily available and the service was friendly and helpful.

“Needless, to say ‘We’ll be back!’” Julia said.

A few days later one of the club’s regular wine appreciation times was held on the patio of Lynn Moffitt’s home.

“Organiser Roy Jeffery produced a variety of wines for tasting and assessment, with a contribution from Robert Mitchell.

“Nibbles of course helped with decision making, followed by delicious cake

and tea and coffee farewell offerings.”

Ashlyn shines on the silver screen

By Tara CAMPBELL ASHYLN Louden-Gamble has lived in Port Stephens her whole life, but recently her normal life was flipped on its head when she was cast as the titular character, Monday in the new Australian feature film, Moon Rock For Monday.

The film centres around Monday, a nine-year-old girl who has a terminal illness and becomes fascinated by MoonRock (Uluru), which she believes can heal her.

By a twist of fate, she becomes caught up in a police chance and decides to go on the run, road tripping through the Northern Territory.

Moon Rock For Monday is Ashlyn’s first screen acting job, but Ashlyn is no stranger to the stage having started acting at eight years old.

“I really liked Monday as a character; she is kind and values life and friendship.

“Most people fear dying, but Monday’s biggest fear was not enjoying or living the life

she had,” Ashlyn told News Of The Area.

Directed by Kurt Martin, and starring a talented cast including David Field (Mortal Kombat, The Night We Called It A Day, Preacher, The Secret Daughter), Aaron

Jeffery (McLeod’s Daughters, Underbelly, X Men Origins: Wolverine) and George Pullar (A Place To Call Home), the film was unlike anything Ashlyn had worked on before.

“All the filming was completed on location, which

meant you had to be flexible and ready to deal with weather conditions moving cast, crew and all the equipment about.

“Filming in Coober Pedy was challenging.

“It was a huge effort getting the cast and crew there, and it

AS property owners, we don’t own the land that constitutes our nature strip, yet Councils expect us to care for and maintain it. Additionally, if there are existing trees or shrubbery we can’t cut/remove them – they’re Council assets and Council’sresponsibility – consequently nature strips have become a bit of a grey area. Nature strips have practical functions, predominantly ensuring clear sight lines for pedestrians and traffic, but that doesn’t mean we’re all consigned to maintaining wastelands.

Rules vary between Councils regarding what can be done. Some Councils prevent any plantings, others are more flexible but have strict guidelines. Still other Councils have fully embraced residents’ requests to plant vegetable gardens, or small shrubs/flowering plants with spectacular results: reducingtraffic pollution, creating shade, thereby reducing that hideous bare asphalt heat, reducing run-off and providing welcome safe havens for insects and birds. And one of the best results? The improvements in human health and wellbeing by providing not only an aesthetically pleasing vision but a means for the community to connect and engage. Start with the Council’s website, check their guidelines and go from there. Here’s to planting success!

Help At Hand

WHILE the severe weather event is now just over a month ago many are still being impacted by flood waters, insurance claims and damage bills.

We don’t often think of getting good news from the ATO but people in Port Stephens and the surrounding region who have been impacted are able to access help from the ATO. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is reassuring communities that support is available for those affected by the New South Wales (NSW) and South-East Queensland (SEQ) floods in March.

The ATO recognises the challenging conditions faced by those in affected areas, especially small businesses, and while their

tax affairs may not be top of mind, support is available.

Assistant Commissioner Andrew Watson said that people affected by the disaster should contact the ATO if they are struggling to meet their tax and super obligations.

“Whilst the immediate danger has passed, we understand that there are lasting impacts for these communities, on top of challenges likely already being faced for businesses impacted by COVID-19.

“We are committed to assisting people get back on track.

“We have a range of practical options available to support those who have been affected by the floods, whether you’re an individual, business owner or primary producer we want to work with you to help

Oh, Mr K, you know sometimes when I seek solutions I turn to philosophy or case law or a thesis written by a student having an existential crisis, and sometimes I need to look no further than Kermit, who made a very valid point when he sang, ‘It’s not easy being green.’

Despite all the information out there on the benefits to ourselves and our planet when we cut down or even cut out meat, vegetarians get a bad rap.

Vegans are for some akin to the antiChrist, such is the level of hatred and taunting they receive for making what is often an ethical decision based on being kind to other creatures who have no say in their destiny.

Still, your daughter’s approach is a bit inyour-face, and that is part of the issue.

Some vegans and vegos happily go about their lives without discussing their choices and others, like the militant vegan, chain themselves to abattoirs and post videos of pigs squealing and chickens being boiled alive, which is a bit unpalatable when you’re sitting down to your Sunday bacon and egg roll.

Dinners must be a rollicking affair at your place, Mr LK. I can imagine your wife bringing her casserole to the table and your daughter warming up her vocal chords before starting a plaintive rendition of Old MacDonald Had a Farm.

It is enough to put anyone off their meal.

Then you will just have to sit there and watch her silently gulping, which, although distracting, is certainly quieter.

“This is not a new problem, but it is a rapidly deteriorating problem.

“Its impact is escalating day by day and it’s not a market failure that’s causing it, it’s a Government failure, because for the past ten years social and affordable housing has not been a priority for this Government,” Ms Washington said.

“Families become homeless, they live in their cars, in tents, they couch surf, they despair,” she added.

Local providers of

the area are desperately begging for more social and affordable housing, from the labour opposition to community organisations including Homelessness Australia, The Salvation Army, The Red Cross, and various councils.

“What we are seeing now is that this indifference has created a community-wide housing crisis.

“It’s not just low income families now suffering, it’s double income households that cannot secure a place to live,” said MP Kate Washington.

In the last half of 2020, more than 500 people in the Port Stephens region were

seeking housing, many of which had perfect rental histories and had applied for up to 160 houses, yet not been accepted for a single house.

Ms Washington also added in an earlier statement about the Port Stephens’ housing crisis, “People can be waiting years to access social housing, and the lack of emergency options means vulnerable people can often end up in places that are far from ideal.

“Ignoring the problem won’t make it go away, the Government needs to do something about this crisis and they need to do it now.”

The ATO is also reminding business owners that it is important to keep their Australian business number (ABN) information up to date, as it is used by Emergency Services and other government agencies during times of natural disaster, used by the Government to identify where financial disaster relief is needed to help businesses recover in disaster affected areas, and likely to be checked if they are applying for a grant or loan for their business.

Pink Golf Fundraiser

AFTER a hiatus last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group Inc. has finally held one of their major fundraisers, the ‘In The Pink Golf Day’.

The event was postponed twice once in 2020 due to the pandemic and again in March due to the severe weather event, so being able to get out on the course and have some fun while fundraising was a welcome experience.

very successful colourful and fun day raising approx. $6,000 for the group.

“This was a great result as the group was unable to fundraise last year due to COVID-19.

“Sadly the pandemic did not stop locals from being diagnosed with breast cancer

Based on Jane Austen’s final, unfinished novel, Sanditon is a visual feast. With all the dazzling trappings of a period drama – the costumes are beautiful, the lush seaside setting is a treat – and a ridiculously goodlooking cast, screenwriter Andrew Davies has created a wonderfully escapist drama. Just beware the ending.

The story begins with a chance accident bringing young Charlotte Heywood (Rose Williams, Reign) to Sanditon, a seaside resort on the brink of change. Charlotte is keen to experience everything the town has to offer, but is stunned by its duplicitous and ambitious inhabitants. Also stars Theo James (Divergent).

Telling the colourful life story of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, this biopic will certainly rock you.

Charting the band’s formation and meteoric rise through the 1970s, the film lovingly recreates iconic concerts and music, all the way from seedy bars to their 1985 Live Aid performance at Wembley Stadium. Previously best known for his work on Mr. Robot, Rami Malek’s redefining role netted the star an Oscar, Golden Globe, Screen Actor’s Guild Award and the BAFTA Award for Best Actor for his transformation into the flamboyant singer, who had to grapple with his ego, sexuality and illness at the height of his fame.

Reality TV with a heart, this series struck a chord when it premiered at the end of 2019. It follows a group of people on the autism spectrum as they search for love and companionship. Hopeful, enlightening and full of depth, you won’t witness raucous dinner parties studded with fights and deception, which would rake in the ratings on other networks.

Refreshingly, season two premieres with a handful of participants from last season continuing their journeys as couples. Michael returns, heart still open and searching, while we also meet some new faces such as Jodi.

MAINTENANCE STRATEGIES and recycling emerged as the big winners in this year’s Tomago Aluminium Innovation and Excellence Awards.

Tese awards focus on changing things up and doing things better than they have been done in the past.

Tomago Aluminium Innovation and Excellence Awards winners were Blake McNamara for Excellence in Health, Safety and Environment, Sam Lloyd for Excellence in Cost and Waste Reduction, Andrew Goodwin for Excellence in Process Stability and Quality and Jack Pattison was named Apprentice of the Year.

The Overall Winners were Leigh Osmond and the team winner was the Anode Pin Recycling team – Jeremy Ireland and John Fraser.

Presenting prizes to individuals and teams, Tomago Aluminium’s Chief Financial Officer Stacey Sleeman said the company

encourages its employees to continually strive for improvement and to look for new, different and better ways of doing things.

A plan aimed at minimising equipment failures at Australia’s biggest aluminium smelter while maximising reliability and cutting routine maintenance costs by more than $485,000 annually, earned its developer the top individual prize in this year’s awards while a plan to recycle used anode pins took out the team prize.

Liquid Metal Operations project leader Leigh Osmond not only developed his maintenance and costreduction plan but also helped with its roll-out, working with a number of Tomago’s stakeholders and various departments at the smelter.

“It wasn’t so much one project as it was multiple projects covering cost and waste reduction, minimising machinery downtime, bringing work in-house and identifying purchasing efficiencies and

opportunities,” Leigh Osmond said.

For his efforts Leigh was named Individual winner at the Innovation and Excellence Awards and was presented with a unique trophy and a financial rewards package worth $15,000 by Tomago Aluminium Chief Financial

“Doors and arms have been opened, welcoming smiles and words providing calm in the chaos.”

Ben, his wife Mel and their three daughters have been supporting Ronald McDonald House Charities for several years by pledging their birthdays.

“Ben and I decided back in

2013 that when the girls have a birthday party, we would ask guests not to bring a gift but to donate to Ronald McDonald House Charities.

“We usually raise between $300 and $500 at each party and the feedback from family and friends has been really positive,” said Mel. “We’re just a normal, busy family but Remmy, Cleo and Maya understand that this is one easy way we can give back and help families, so they don’t have to be separated when their child is sick,” said Mel. One Forster-based family experienced firsthand the impact Ronald McDonald House Charities has on families like theirs when their niece, Zali, needed to be admitted to Gosford Hospital shortly after she was born.

That award went to Business Improvement Specialist Jeremy Ireland and Procurement Superintendent John Fraser who together saw the value of Tomago’s waste

- namely the used anode pins - and developed a method for recycling them, reclaiming several years’ worth of pins from recycler Molycop Newcastle and delivering some $1.4 million in revenue to the business for 2020 and ongoing annual benefits of around $100,000.

Jeremy Ireland said developing the idea meant looking “outside the box” and adopting a reuse and recycle philosophy.

It was also, he said, a “little bit personal”.

“For John and me, winning the award was a big thing but it also felt good to help put some money back into the business during the COVID months, when things were a bit tight,” Jeremy said.

Stacey Sleeman said the company continuously encourages employees to constantly look at different ways of doing their jobs.

“Our people are the experts in their fields and are the best at identifying ways in which we can achieve greater efficiencies in our workplace,” Ms Sleeman said.

“Leigh’s idea was a simple yet effective one that has saved the business a great deal of money already and is set to save a great deal more and that is money that can be re-invested in the business.

“Similarly, Jeremy Ireland and John Fraser are not only saving us money but also preserving valuable resources by developing a method for recycling anode pins.”

30 Years Of Supporting Sick Kids and Their Families

IT’s been three decades of continuous support for families facing some of the hardest times ever.

This month, Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Northern NSW celebrates 30 years of providing a home away from home for families with a seriously ill or injured child.

Since the doors of Ronald McDonald House in Newcastle first swung open in April 1991, families have found a place to call home during some of their darkest days.

The charity has since opened an additional house in Tamworth, three Family Rooms, and a Family Retreat in Foster.

Stockton Beach Receives Funding

THE NSW Government has announced over $768 000 in funding to the City of Newcastle Council presented as three successful grants to help assist with coastal erosion.

This funding is part of the 2020-2021 Coast and Estuary Grants Program, and will enable the investigation of the erosion on Stockton Beach.

Minister for Local Government, Shelly Hancock said, “This funding will enable Council to investigate the suitability and feasibility of delivering sand dredged from

the South Arm of the Hunter River estuary to potentially deliver mass sand nourishment at Stockton Beach.

The three approved grants will also help to manage the Open Hazard locations on the beach following the severe erosion events that occurred in 2020, impacting Stockton’s coastline.

In a study from 2020, it was revealed that 112 000 cubic metres of sand has been lost from Stockton Beach each year.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Region, Taylor Martin emphasised the Berejiklian Government’s

commitment to supporting the City of Newcastle in the effort to manage Stockton’s coastlines.

Nelson Bay man charged for drug offences A NELSON Bay man has been charged with commercial drug supply after GHB and cash were located at a Newcastle unit.

About 9am on Thursday 6 May 2021, officers attached to Hunter Region Enforcement

Squad (RES), Northern Region High Visibility Unit and Operation Utah Hunter attended a unit on King Street, Newcastle.

Upon arrival at the building, police spoke with and arrested a 35-year-old

man.

Officers executed a search warrant at the unit where they located and seized methylamphetamine, liquid gamma-Hydroxybutyric (GHB), more than $135,000 cash and mobile phones.

During the execution of the warrant, a 28-yearold woman arrived at the property and was arrested for a breach of bail offence.

Both were taken to Newcastle Police Station where the man was charged with supply large commercial quantity prohibited drug, supply commercial quantity prohibited drug and deal with the proceeds of crime, while the woman was charged with the breach of bail offence and possess

Payment of an annual $100 fee secured a storage place in the two tiered racks near the water's edge.

Following requests from local residents, Port Stephens Councillor Steve Tucker said that at Tanilba Bay, canoes and kayaks would also be able to be stored in the dinghy racks.

“This is the only place in the shire where this is the case,” he said.

“Some people didn't like the dinghies being taken from the water's edge,” he remarked.

“They felt that the ambience of the bays would be lost.

“If you look at paintings of the bays, there always seems to be upturned boats featured in these artworks,” he added.

“We just had to bite the bullet and make a blanket rule because at some popular beaches, the public was crowded out by the clutter of dinghies on the sand,” he said.

Rotary Golf Day Raises Over $20,000

THE Rotary Club of Nelson Bay were out in force for one of their major fundraisers – an annual charity golf day.

The weather gods were smiling on the club for their twenty ninth annual event.

130 players tee’d off and enjoyed the Ambrose event.

Arja Levonpera of the Rotary Club of Nelson Bay told News Of The Area, “More than $20,000 was raised thanks to the support of players, volunteers and sponsors.

“Port Stephens Toyota has been a loyal supporter of this event for over a decade and supplied a Toyota Yaris, valued

AS the world battles on the front line of the COVID-19 pandemic, there are some still working hard to eradicate the pandemic which struck in the 1940’s and 1950’s – Polio.

The World Health Organisation tells us, “Poliomyelitis (polio) is a highly infectious viral disease that largely affects children under 5 years of age.

“The virus is transmitted by person-to-person spread mainly through the faecaloral route or, less frequently, by a common vehicle (e.g. contaminated water or food) and multiplies in the intestine, from where it can invade the nervous system and cause paralysis.

“In 1988, the World Health Assembly adopted a resolution for the worldwide eradication of polio, marking the launch of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, spearheaded by national governments, WHO, Rotary International, the US Centers

for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), UNICEF, and later joined by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.

“Wild poliovirus cases have decreased by over 99% since 1988, from an estimated 350 000 cases in more than 125 endemic countries then to 175 reported cases in 2019.”

Sue Bell of Raymond Terrace is currently a member of Rotary Club of Raymond Terrace and has been involved in Rotary for 11 years.

She is working hard alongside many others towards the eradication of Polio.

Sue Bell told News Of The Area, “My first Polio Immunisation tour was to India in 2014.

“At that time India was polio free for 3 years.”

Sue returned to India in 2015 and then again in 2018 to continue the immunisation program.

NID (National Immunisation Day) runs

over two days and is run by the Indian Government, in conjunction with the World Health Organisation, Health Department, and local Health Workers in each village.

“The village I worked in was about two and a half hours drive west of New Delhi.

“The people there are very poor, but beautiful people, and they were very glad to accept us into their village.”

The team immunise as many children, five years and under, as possible.

As each child is immunised, they have their left pinkie finger painted purple to reduce the risk of double dosing.

“It was an amazing experience; when young mums bring their babies in to be immunised.”

The team conducted immunisation at a central location on day one, then they walked around different areas of the village to connect with those who didn’t come to the central immunisation hub.

“This will make our waterfront more accessible for all, as there will be plenty of room for everyone on this new wider path.

“We’ll be replacing some of the existing pathway and creating a new path in parts to maximise the grassed space for picnics.

“There will also be some earthworks and landscaping to create this new picnic area.

“New park furniture and shelters are also on the way, giving plenty of beautiful places to stop, have a rest and take in the incredible scenery of Tomaree Headland and the

Nelson Bay Women’s Bowling Club support the Tomaree Ladies Breast Cancer Support Group

NELSON Bay Women’s Bowling Club members proudly supported the Tomaree Ladies Breast Cancer Support Group with over 50 ladies in attendance.

The ladies had a tremendous fun filled day with a friendly game of bowls followed by a delicious lunch.

More importantly it was made successful with a $520 contribution to the worthy cause.

The Tomaree Ladies Breast Cancer Support Group is a local `grassroots' self funded group that provides assistance to residents on the Tomaree Peninsula who are Breast Cancer patients.

All funds raised or

donated to the group stay in the Tomaree area and are used to support people living in the Tomaree Peninsula with Breast Cancer.

This year's Pink Charity Day presented with some very imaginative outfits from the ladies.

President Pat Janes certainly appreciated their efforts and the outstanding efforts of all the Committee members in making the day such a success.

Congratulations to our overall winners on the day, Noreen Allen, Pat Pepper and Karen Marshall.

Well done to all the raffle winners and to Judi Priestly for receiving the ‘pinkest of the day’ award.

Local mother and son Jennifer and Austin White got into the spirit for the event.

Jennifer White told News Of The Area, “I wanted to show Austin what a big event was like!

“We trained for about six weeks, riding and running and doing laps at the pool.

The pair entered the TriaTri and missed out on the swim due to conditions which saw them undertake a beach run, bike ride and 2km run.

“I wanted Austin to be a part of a home event, and be around some of the bigger competitors.

“It was a great course and he had the best time he completed in about 35 mins and asked me when we were doing another one!” she said.

The first athletes who came through the finish line were twin brothers Jayden and Luke Schofield who crossed the line at the same moment.

By Marian SAMSON LOCALS and visitors lined up to tackle the Port Stephens Triathlon at One Mile Beach over the weekend.

There has been a massive increased demand for the Standard Triathlon. With the increasing exposure through the ITU race series and a generally growing base of athletes we have seen races sell out in hours.

This year’s event is a UniSport Nationals Triathlon event for 2021.

Once again the Lions Club of Soldiers Point were cooking up a storm to feed hungry competitors and supporters.

The event had a range of options with the standard triathlon taking in a 1.5km swim, a 37km bike ride and a 10km run.

The Sprint event gave competitors a shorter course with a 750m swim, 20km bike ride and a 5km run.
