COMMUNITY members made their position clear on the prospective sale of land at 109 Foreshore Drive, Salamander Bay over the weekend, with hundreds gathering for a rally on the site.

Organisers say the aim of the rally was to urge Mayor Ryan Palmer and Councillors Steve Tucker, Glen Dunkley, Matt Bailey and Chris Doohan to reconsider their position on the sale of the land.

The above listed councillors voted to permit the sale of the 557m2 parcel of the land to fund urgent community works, at the recent Port Stephens Council meeting, after the motion was put forward in a Mayoral Minute by Mayor Ryan Palmer.

Those organising the event are asking locals to let their Councillors know where they stand on the proposed sell off.

Dr Sarah Bayley named Port Stephens Woman Of The Year

She instigated the foundation of a respiratory clinic which allowed for face-to-face consultations as well as building a vaccination hub for the community.

To date her clinic has delivered over 49,000 vaccinations to members of our community.

Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington told News Of The Area, “When we asked Sarah to accept the honour of being Woman Of The Year, she said 'it isn’t me it is my team'.”

Dr Sarah Bayley said, “One of the best things was being able to employ lots of people in the clinics and still look after our regular patients with the vaccination clinics being run at after hours clinics.”

Dr Bayley spoke at the

International Women's Day Breakfast at the Murrook Cultural Centre on Monday, and took the opportunity to ask the community to consider the facts when it comes to making decisions about health care, such as vaccines.

“Social media tells us ridiculous things, and I can tell you as a medical professional that I am thankful that we have the protection of vaccines and treatments and we won't lose the lives that have been lost in other countries on the other side of the

world.”

New events toolkit launched to aid Port’s COVID-19 recovery PORT Stephens Council has launched a new online toolkit aimed at encouraging more events to Port Stephens while helping to reboot the local economy following COVID-19.

The Port Stephens Events Toolkit is a ‘one-stop-shop’ for event organisers with advice and information all in one handy location.

Mayor Ryan Palmer said the launch comes at a critical time for local businesses and tourism operators.

“It’s no secret the pandemic has had a devastating impact on both businesses and the Port Stephens tourism industry – an industry that’s worth more than $1.9 million every day to the local economy,” Mayor Palmer said.

“Events play an important role in attracting visitors to our region, generating local jobs, investment and growth.

“They also bring our community together and improve the vibrancy of our town centres.

“With restrictions easing and international borders back open,

it’s important we’re leveraging Port Stephens as an eventfriendly destination.

“Whether it’s a music festival, wedding, community event or major sporting competition, our new Events Toolkit takes the guesswork out of holding an event, making it simpler and quicker to navigate the application process.

“Pre-pandemic, Port Stephens played host to more than 120 events annually and we hope by streamlining the process we can attract more high-quality community, national and international events that will benefit the entire region.”

The Events Toolkit includes a checklist, information on statutory requirements and practical advice on delivering a safe, well-organised and successful event.

Council’s Development Services Group Manager Steve Peart said the toolkit

was created following feedback from the community and event organisers.

“We’re constantly looking for ways to improve our processes and make it easier to work with Council as part of our commitment to business excellence,” Mr Peart said.

“Successful events need careful and considerate planning, which can be daunting if you’re a

volunteer or small community group, so we wanted to provide clear guidance on the application process to make it quicker and simpler to understand exactly what’s required.

“We’re also creating a series of webinars to support the toolkit, which will provide further information on things like traffic management and risk assessments.

“Council’s dedicated Vibrant Places team does a fabulous job and we are currently looking at how we can further support our community and event organisers as a way to grow our local economy and showcase everything that’s great about Port Stephens.”

Given the impacts of Covid-19 on Port Stephens’ financial security, Mr Palmer said the community needed to understand the financial constraints under which Council is currently working.

“Preliminary forecasts show the organisation continuing along its current path will result in recording deficits for the next ten years.

“As well as this, Port Stephens has the lowest rates in the region. This is not sustainable.

“Council has a choice to make on the direction of the organisation if we want to see Port Stephens prosper into the future.

“We could continue to cut expenditure and reduce community services such as mowing, the opening hours of our pool and libraries and maintenance of our public facilities, or, we can raise revenue through an increase in rates or fees, drive our nonrate sources of revenue such as the reinvestment of funds from the sale of land.

“I believe that a combination of all of these factors will be needed.”

A Rescission Motion regarding 109 Foreshore Drive, Salamander Bay was set to be discussed at the Port Stephens Council meeting on March 8, after the time of publication.

Beaches Closed Along Coast

SAVAGE rains and floods are impacting lives across NSW and Queensland, with seventeen local government areas (LGAs) declared as disaster areas Port Stephens and the Myall Coast have so far not reached disaster levels, however the wild weather conditions have impacted our beaches.

Notably Stockton Beach, along with a range of beaches from Coffs Harbour to Shell Harbour were closed over the weekend due to erosion and

hazardous surf, with some SLSCs having no access to the beach to set up patrols or position rescue equipment.

Conditions across the state were deemed too dangerous for all coastal activities including swimming (including ocean pools), rock fishing and boating.

The iconic red and yellow flags were down across many beaches.

While riverine flooding in some locations is easing, the situation on NSW beaches is one of widespread erosion, damage to seawalls and access ways due to high tides and

powerful surf.

Hazardous surf, lack of access for rescue craft, coupled with the strain on volunteer resources due to the flood response, particularly in the north, means many clubs will not be able to patrol this weekend and beaches will be closed.

Lifesavers conducted surveillance patrols from clubs and Support Operations callout teams are on standby for emergency incidents.

A 3-metre long-period swell from the East continued to batter the NSW coastline with conditions considered

Arts Centre Exhibition

THE ‘Music and Fusion’ exhibition opens on 9 March at the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre.

The exhibition will see artistic impressions of music bringing shapes to life.

The artists’ interpretations will portray an emotional response depicting the beauty of sound.

Meryl Miller told News Of The Area, “The Gallery will be filled with a colourful kaleidoscope.

“Kaleidoscope is derived from Ancient Greek, its literal meaning being ‘observer of beautiful forms'.

“Our artists' creative minds have run wild and the result is a veritable kaleidoscope of colour and musical images.”

The second display will be ‘Fusion’ which is a creative textiles group that works experimentally with a wide range of materials from fabric, plastic, wood, feathers, paper, wire, dyes and more.

Lorraine said, “After enrolling in a night class course and learning the basics of throwing, I bought my own wheel.

“I was hooked.”

During a holiday to Nelson Bay, she met her husband Mark, and a year later moved to the Bay without her wheel.

“I joined the Community Arts Centre in 1981.

“It was a very small group then.”

Life, work and children meant pottery was put on the back burner for 40 odd years.

“I’m now back with more enthusiasm than before, enjoying the craft, companionship, and guidance that this centre provides us all.”

International Women’s Day

INTERNATIONAL Women’s Day was celebrated in style at a breakfast on Monday hosted by Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington and Member for Paterson Meryl Swanson at Murrook Cultural Centre.

The event was attended by hundreds of women from the region in celebration of the achievements of local women.

Previous recipients of the Port Stephens Women of the Year Awards were also in attendance included Leah Anderson, Carmel Northwood and Tori Lalor, all women who have contributed to the foundation of our community.

Member for Paterson Meryl Swanson said, “International Women’s Day isn’t about an achievement, it is more about bringing everyone with you.

“This year International Women’s Day is about action for equality and breaking the bias.

“Gender bias occurs against women in the workplace, in schools, TAFE

and University, networks and in families.

“Some bias is deliberate and some is unconscious.”

Swanson went on to say that it can be little things that constitute gender bias, like a woman being told it is OK to do “girl” push-ups in a workout.

Swanson says they aren’t “girl” push-ups, they are modified push-ups.

Often people will comment on a baby boy as a strong child and a baby girl as beautiful, which can reinforce negative gender stereotypes.

Swanson said International Women’s Day is about strong girls and smart girls, with this year’s theme being ‘Gender Equality Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow’.

“We need to be vigilant in breaking bias, especially unconscious bias, and delivering equal opportunities for girls.

“Women’s safety is always at risk – we know it is there – we have to be able to have a world without assault.

“Women are entitled to the same remuneration for

the same job with the same skills and experience, yet they continue to experience a fourteen percent gender pay gap.”

Swanson highlighted areas in which she believes society needs to do more, including improving the support given to women facing domestic violence.

“Women deserve better – being pro-women isn’t being anti-bloke, it is about equality,” she said.

Japanese Encephalitis detected in NSW

NEW South Wales Health is alerting the community to protect themselves against mosquito bites.

Japanese Encephalitis (JE) virus has been detected in samples from commercial pig farms at five locations in both southern and western NSW indicating the virus is likely circulating in the mosquito population.

Japanese Encephalitis is a mosquito-borne disease that may affect animals, including pigs, and humans.

It is the NSW Health advice that the best mosquito repellents contain Diethyl Toluamide (DEET), Picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.

Insecticide sprays, vapour dispensing units (indoors) and mosquito coils (outdoors) should be used to clear rooms or repel mosquitoes from an area.

All windows, doors, vents and other entrances are recommended to be covered by insect screens.

Outside water-holding containers where mosquitoes can breed should be removed.

“NSW Health is cautioning people undertaking outdoor activities such as camping and fishing to carefully consider their plans.

Emergency Services Update

Sandbag Collection For those requiring sandbags to assist with flooding, these can be collected from Port Stephens SES Unit at 31 Rees James, Raymond Terrace and Tomaree SES Unit at 55A Sandy Point Road, Corlette.

There are both pre-filled sandbags to assist those unable to fill their own as

well as DIY, with sandbags, sand and a shovel for those wanting to fill their own.

Flood Safety Due to the current severe weather warnings, emergency services are issuing the following advice.

In the case of emergencies, call 000.

If you need assistance with weather related situations, for example having a tree down, flooding, require sandbags etc. call SES on 13 25 000.

If power lines are down, this is classified as an emergency.

Do not drive through

flood waters and only travel if you must.

Emergency Services Assist Flood Relief A number of local fire brigade and SES unit members have headed across the region this week to assist with flood relief efforts.

Dignity Initiative At Public Schools

By Marian SAMPSON WOMEN and girls everywhere know how important access to menstrual products is.

Yet for some the cost is high and access is not as simple as it should be.

Female students at public schools across the state will soon have free access to menstrual hygiene products, following a successful trial in 31 schools.

The $30 million program will make sure female students can participate in all aspects of school life.

Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell said this is

an important milestone for female students.

“Getting your period should not be a barrier to education,” Ms Mitchell said.

This program is providing schools with dispensers, tampons and pads for free and is supporting young women’s health, engagement and attendance at school.

“I want our young women to feel comfortable in knowing they have access to free sanitary products when they need.”

The program builds on a pilot at schools in South Western Sydney and the Dubbo region.

“We have seen through

the pilot program that providing sanitary items has a positive impact on educational engagement and attainment,” Ms Mitchell said.

Minister for Women Bronnie Taylor said the statewide rollout is what many young women have been calling for.

“This great initiative is about ensuring our young women have the support they need, with dignity and without barriers, as they continue their education journey.

“By openly discussing periods, endometriosis and reproductive health we are removing the taboo around

Have your say on the future of Port Stephens PORT Stephens Council is calling for the community to have its say on the future vision for Port Stephens, as part of community engagement on its Community Strategic Plan.

Council’s Corporate Services Group Manager Tim Crosdale said ‘Our place, our plan, our future’ sets out the community’s aspirations and priorities for Port Stephens over the next ten years.

“Whether it’s managing our coastline, creating vibrant community spaces or keeping us connected as a community, the Community Strategic Plan acts as a road map for Council, government agencies, community services, businesses and the community to guide infrastructure, programs and services delivered across Port Stephens,” Mr Crosdale said.

“It's critical for Council in informing what services, facilities and programs we deliver and how we resource them through our people, assets and finances.

“In September 2020 we held our first ever Liveability Index Survey, which saw 3700 community members

have their say on what they valued most and how their place was performing.

“We used this information, as well as community input on other strategies and plans, to delve deeper on values and priorities for the area during public workshops in late 2021.

“Throughout the process residents, ratepayers and businesses have played a critical role in helping to inform and shape this important document, with close to 7,000 interactions with the Port Stephens community so far.”

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer said Council is now checking in with the community as part of the next phase of community engagement.

“We have now incorporated what we have been hearing into the draft Community Strategic Plan and want to know if the community thinks we have got it right,” Mayor Palmer said.

New Dragon Boat hits the water

DRAGON boating is a fast, fun and furious team-based paddling sport which has become the fastest growing water sport in Australia.

“The Greater Port Stephens Dragon Boat Club Inc. was established in 2017 and was affiliated with Dragon Boats NSW,” said Club Publicity Officer Karyn Price.

“In 2019 the club found a new home base at Soldiers Point Marina who have been extremely charitable to the club.”

With funding from grants and community organisations, the Club recently bought its first new dragon boat.

“With the generous support of Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington the club was the successful recipient of a Community Building Partnership Grant.

“With additional funding from ClubGrants from local organisations we have now purchased our first brand new boat which was officially launched on Saturday 26 February,” said Karyn.

The launch ceremony was made possible via the support of the Port Stephens Council Rapid Response Fund.

On the day, a Chinese ‘dotting of the eye’ ceremony was performed by Kate Washington, which is said to ‘awaken’ the dragon.

The Smoking Ceremony was performed by Jamie Tarrant of the Worimi Nation to bless the boat.

“Other dignitaries joining us on the day were Meryl Swanson MP, Deputy Mayor of Port Stephens Council Steve Tucker, representatives from ClubGrant supporters and members of Hunter River and Newcastle Dragon Boat Clubs.

“Following the official ceremony many of our invited guests joined club members in a celebratory paddle,” said Karyn.

THE NSW Government is set to boost the state’s commitment to sovereign defence industry capabilities with the launch of a new $1.23 million Regional Defence Networks Program aimed at making it easier for local businesses to expand and supply to the defence and aerospace industry.

Minister for Enterprise, Investment and Trade Stuart Ayres said that the three-year program will focus on driving business growth across four key regions: Western Sydney, Shoalhaven/Illawarra, Riverina-Murray and the Hunter.

“We know that procurement requirements and entering the defence market requires a deep understanding of the industry, so we want to do all we can to help existing suppliers grow, and support new players to enter the sector,” Mr Ayres said.

“This program is about helping businesses understand the defence

supply chain and identify that their offering has value and need.

“We want to turn local businesses from being ‘Defence Interested/Able’ to ‘Defence Ready’.”

Following a competitive procurement process, Investment NSW, working with Western Parkland City Authority and Regional NSW, has appointed four partner agencies to deliver the program, including the Hunter Defence Cooperative for the Hunter region “These organisations have a deep understanding of the defence ecosystem in their respective regions, which is critical to achieving the program’s objectives and in turn expand NSW’s defence and aerospace capabilities,” Mr Ayres said.

PORT Stephens Yacht Club is celebrating 50 years of competitive sailing on one of Australia’s most pristine and biggest waterways.

To commemorate the anniversary the club is holding an open day at its club house adjacent to Soldiers Point Marina on Ridgeway Street at Soldiers Point on 19

March 2022 from 10.30am.

The day is set to be a great opportunity for the community to join in the celebrations with a coffee van, bar and food available.

There will also be historic displays and the venue will also play host to Marine Rescue, Maritime and Water Police and a band which will commence at 11am.

SAILING is a sport that those of us living around the coast can enjoy.

We can jump on board and try sailing with a local yacht club or we can badger family and friends to take us for a day out.

For some, sailing becomes a lifestyle.

They cruise up and down the coast and the more daring take their vessels across the oceans to far away lands.

There is no doubt that there are more men than women who own yachts and sail.

However, the women who do sail have a great support network.

Women Who Sail is an international group that supports women venturing out on the water.

offer support and advice to those taking up the sport and lifestyle.

They share their achievements, failures and offer mentoring and encouragement.

This international group includes a local chapter of Women Who Sail and the group often gets together onshore to share experiences.

A recent gathering at Crest at Birubi Beach saw the table filled with those who have lived aboard, those that have crossed seas, circumnavigated Australia and even the world.

Every woman who wants to get into sailing or who sails can be a part of this international movement that is there to support women in a male dominated sport.

Just after midday the gathering will move to the “starters caravan” at Soldiers Point Boat Ramp where the fleet will sail past with commentary on the boats, their skippers and achievements.

Stay, Dine and Discover A $50 ACCOMMODATION voucher is now available as part of the NSW Government’s $250 million Stay NSW program.

Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government Victor Dominello said the voucher initiative is a commitment to bolster the accommodation industry while getting people excited to travel in NSW. “This is a win-win for NSW – the vouchers will give

hard hit businesses much needed stimulus, while also encouraging residents to explore our great State,” Mr Dominello said.

“The Stay NSW program has been expanded and fasttracked, so people can enjoy a staycation sooner.

“Whether it’s a quiet country inn, the family-run caravan park or a hotel in the Sydney CBD, every budget needs a boost this year.”

Mr Dominello said the state-wide rollout follows a successful pilot in the Sydney

CBD. “Applying is fast and simple via the Service NSW mobile app, through the Service NSW website or by calling 13 77 88 for assistance,” Mr Dominello said.

“People can pool the $50 Stay NSW Vouchers with relatives or mates, with no redemption limit.

“Apply as soon as you can so you can check-in somewhere special and check-out somewhere new.”

There are more than

1,200 Stay NSW businesses registered across the State but it is not too late for accommodation premises to get on board.

Stay NSW Vouchers are valid until 9 October, 2022.

Participating businesses will be able to redeem vouchers seven days a week, including public holidays.

Customers will be able to search for places to stay on the easy-to-use business finder.

I'M writing to you to express my strong concerns and objections to the sale of a well known and critically important koala corridor at 109 Foreshore Drive, immediately adjacent to the Mambo Wetlands.

The local and international community and 200 volunteers who staff the Port Stephens Koala Hospital find this decision bitterly disappointing and appalling.

Recently the koalas have been declared Endangered by Environment Minister Sussan Ley. How are you supposed to prevent the extinction of koalas in Port Stephens when the Mayor and the Port Stephens Council makes decisions that, without question, will hasten this national and international tragedy?

The loss of habitat and/or the fragmentation of habitats and corridors for all wildlife, severely interrupts their home range, movement patterns, social structure and stress levels in koala populations, making them much more vulnerable to disease, road strike and dog attacks.

Thus taking in its totality, habitat loss and fragmentation is considered the principal cause of decline in koala populations.

Port Stephens Legacy is holding a fundraising Golf Day at Horizons Golf Resort on 21 March, 2022.

Doug Jacka told News Of The Area, “The golf is the first major funding raising event for Port Stephens Legacy in 2022.”

Legacy has been around since 1923 and was formed to help widows and the children of Defence personnel who have given up their lives or health serving our nation.

“In the Port Stephens area

there are over 180 widows and sixteen children currently; sadly this number is increasing.”

Legacy gets no support from the Government and relies on donations and events such as these days, badge week and BBQ’s.

Major sponsors of the day are First National Port Stephens, supported by Port Stephens Toyota who have supplied a Hole in One car (Haval Julion SUV), Horizons Resort, and many more local businesses who have provided prizes.
