WHILE that might look great and spread Christmas cheer, it is important to check that these additions to our homes are safe.

Candles are also a great way to add atmosphere at Christmas but they do offer additional hazards around the home.

Often we pull the tree down and pack it away in the New Year, failing to run a check of the electricals, so it is important that when we set up our tree we check that everything is safe.

Simple things like using an overload protected powerboard can help make a difference.

Electrical cords should not be twisted or tangled and only leads designed

for use outdoors should be used outdoors.

Giacomo Arnott, Deputy Captain Raymond Terrace Fire and Rescue told News Of The Area, “As we head into the Christmas season, we all need to remember that fire safety is important year round.

“We love seeing amazing Christmas light displays as much as the next emergency service, but you can’t overload your power boards.

“Running multiple power boards off one power point is extremely dangerous and can lead to a fire occurring.

“Your local Fire & Rescue crew does not want to have to visit you and try to put out a fire in your

living room caused by an overloaded power board.

“If you have Christmas candles going, make sure they’re away from combustible material and blow them out when you leave the room.

“We hope everyone has a safe Christmas, and these safety tips will ensure that,” he said. q A simple olive tree that can be planted in the garden at a later date decorated with lights and Christmas spirit.

Port Business Women Network at Koala Sanctuary

THE Port Stephens Women In Business networking group got together at the Bay's newest and possibly most significant tourism attraction the Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary.

There were a record number of first time attendees at the event and the 45 women were hosted by Katherine Lamont and the new team at the koala sanctuary.

Presenter Rebecca Morley (Beck) presented a training solution that offers practical strategies for collaborating more effectively with others.

Beck is a Director at Spark CoWork, the Principal at Beck Morley Consulting, a Business Connect Advisor and a trainer and mentor at The Business Centre Newcastle.

Kerri Rodley of Port Stephens Women In Business told News Of The Area, “Beck has been described as a

client relationship maven, as she is always looking for ways to collaborate and work with businesses and the community to drive positive outcomes for everyone.”

Attendees learnt about The Fruit Personality Profiling System during the presentation, a training solution designed by Lynne Schinella that offers practical strategies for working more effectively with others - your peers, suppliers, clients and managers.

"When we have more respect and understanding for each other’s differences, we can connect more effectively as human beings especially during these challenging times,” said Rebecca Morley.

The Port Stephens Women In Business is a holistic group of businesswomen from businesses small and large that collaborate, share, encourage and network building opportunities locally for other businesswomen.

Tomaree Pop Up Museum TOMAREE Museum Association supported by the Port Stephens Council as part of the Vibrant Spaces program will be staging a Pop-up Museum at d’Albora Marina Nelson Bay from 21 December 2020 to 8 January 2021.

In keeping with the aim of the Vibrant Spaces grant program, this exhibition will be

free and is open to the whole community, promoting creative expression, and injecting even more life energy and vibrancy into the Nelson Bay foreshore.

This event will launch the Tomaree Museum Project, explaining our vision to develop a world class publicly owned Regional Cultural Centre for Port Stephens – it’s core

element the Tomaree Museum, telling stories of local history and environment, and exploring community identity.

The Pop-Up Museum will feature an interesting sample of Port Stephens’ great natural and human history, including story panels, audio-visual records and artefacts.

You will also be able to check out The Australian National Maritime Museum’s

‘Submerged’ exhibition on East Coast Shipwrecks as well as selection of artworks by local artists.

Ian Farnsworth the Chair of the Tomaree Museum Association said that, “This Vibrant Spaces display represents a wonderful collaboration between the Tomaree Museum Association, Port Stephens Historical Society and the Australian

National Maritime Museum; generously supported by Port Stephens Council, local government agencies and community businesses.

“The grant by Port Stephens Council enables us to provide a unique attraction that showcases the region’s history and identity,” he said.

MAN’S best friend has a new place to play in Raymond Terrace with the opening of a new fenced off lead dog area in Boomerang Park.

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer says it’s a fantastic new addition to the park.

“Boomerang Park is fast becoming a recreation hub not just for the Raymond Terrace community but for people across our region.

“With a children’s playground, fitness equipment, shared pathways, the Men’s Shed, croquet and petanque court and now a fenced off lead dog park, it’s a fantastic place to come and spend some quality time,” he said.

“This is one of our community’s Port Stephens 2020 priority projects

and it’s great our four-legged friends can enjoy the new fenced off lead area in time for the Christmas holidays,” he added.

Council’s Community and Recreation Coordinator Brock Lamont says dog-friendly facilities are in high demand across Port Stephens.

“The success of our existing fenced dog parks at Fingal Bay, Soldiers Point and Medowie really highlights how much our community value these park improvements.

“After consulting with our community on the options for Raymond Terrace in 2019, we decided Boomerang Park was the best location as it has an existing off lead area, plenty of parking options,

connecting pathways and of course, public amenities.

“We know our community want more places to exercise their dogs, so we anticipate this will be a wellused addition for the park,” he said.

Port Stephens Council is currently asking for community feedback on dog exercise areas at Anna Bay, Fishermans Bay and Boat Harbour.

Garden of Eden Place of Beauty

FOR Christians, The Garden of Eden represents a place of beauty created by God. Indeed, religious scholars find it mentioned in the Bible in the books of Genesis, Ezekiel, Zecheriah and Psalms.

Tanilba's Baptist Church has its own Garden of Eden but this one's a lot different to the one in the scriptures.

It is, in fact, a thriving vegetable garden built some time ago by a group of men who meet there at around 10am on Thursdays for friendship and social interaction.

They share in the bountiful harvest and even supply the nearby church hall

Boardriders Awards THE Bay Area Boardriders Club held their annual end of year presentation on Saturday 28 November at Boat Harbour.

Local club-members were rewarded for their efforts throughout the year in a variety of categories.

Nelson Corner took out the award for Open Men, while Jasmine Sampson was the winner in the Open Women’s category.

Dean Shaw was the winner in the Over 50’s, and Jamie Doran took home the Over 40’s category.

Mark Buchanan was the victor in the Over 28’s, with Isaac Sullivan taking out the 18’s and 16’s categories.

In the 14’s Girls, Ava Plummer got the win, while Jimmi Hill took out the 14’s Boys.

The 12’s Boys category went to Harlem Stone.

Supporting local families in need “There’s a real spirit of generosity among our people and many of them, despite the challenges they’ve faced in 2020, have already brought in gifts to help The Salvos reach their target of collecting 500,000 donated presents this December,” said Ms Inglis.

“So many families across our communities have felt the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and we’re committed to helping these people through what should be a joyful time for all.”

With the need so great this year, Newcastle Permanent branches across the Hunter region are encouraging locals to get involved.

“Our Newcastle Permanent Team here in the region are calling our local community to join us in lending a helping hand.

“Any gift of any value will help and be warmly received.

“You don’t have to give a lot, just whatever you can,” said Carly Bush, Newcastle Permanent’s local Regional Manager.

“Presents should be new, unwrapped, unused and can be

By David WILSON NELSON Bay Croquet Club members Pamela Barnwell and Derek Bull contested the NSW Golf Croquet Open Doubles tournament played on 26 and 27 November 2020 at the Croquet NSW Headquarters courts at Tempe in Sydney.

Pam and Derek qualified for the semi-finals after finishing third in a very

competitive round-robin stage in which no doubles pair was undefeated.

In the semi-final, they beat Pauline Markwell & Stephen Burns (Coogee/ RSGC) 7-4 7-5, after losing 6-7 in a tight game to this pair in the round-robin.

In the final, they beat Ron & Ros Johnstone (Cooks River/Sutherland) 7-5 7-4 to become NSW Open Golf Croquet Champions.

Traditional gifts a symbol of friendship

PERSONNEL from No. 3 Control and Reporting Unit based at RAAF Base Williamtown have received gifts from the Garby Elders as a symbol of friendship.

The Garby Elders represent the traditional custodians of the Northern Lowlands Gumbaynggirr jagun (or country).

The unit has deployed surveillance and communications systems to the Gumbaynggirr jagun near Corindi in Northern NSW on multiple occasions for the past few years.

During these deployments, strong effort has been made to build lasting relationships with the Garby Elders and the community.

Indigenous Liaison Officer RAAF Base Williamtown Flight Lieutenant Matthew Roberts said receiving traditional gifts of such significance was a great honour.

“The unit is now the proud custodian of clapping sticks and a didgeridoo adorned with markings which tell of the Gumbaynggirr people together with the bond of friendship which has been forged with Number 3 Control and Reporting Unit personnel,” Flight Lieutenant Roberts said.

“It has been a humbling experience to play a part in supporting that ongoing relationship, which is very special.”

Control and Reporting Unit Wing Commander Simon Wildermuth said it was a connection that is truly valued.

“The Garby Elders and Gumbaynggirr people have continued to welcome us onto their country in support of our training activities at Corindi this year during Exercise Lightning Storm,” he said.

“We respect the role that the

Garby Elders play as representatives of the traditional custodians of the land used to support our operations.

“As such, we are sincerely grateful for the opportunity to learn from them and the community about their land and culture.”

The preservation of Indigenous traditions and culture is something personnel are passionate about.

“In particular I would like to

acknowledge the efforts of Flying Officer Andy Winter and Flying Officer Lucy Iddon.

“In conjunction with the Indigenous Liaison Officer they have both been instrumental in building a relationship with the Garby Elders and Gumbaynggirr community.

“It is a relationship based on mutual respect, consultation and friendship that has been fostered

over many years.”

In acknowledgement of the significance of the gifts, unit personnel have commissioned a display case to feature the didgeridoo and clapping sticks permanently in the foyer of the No. 3 Control and Reporting Unit main building located at the Eastern Region Operations Centre.

Local sprinters amongst the medals

HAWKS Nest sprinter Keira McGregor took to the track for the NSW All Schools State Athletics Championships at Sydney Olympic Park on 3-6 December.

Keira competed in the Females 14 years 100 metres sprint, and was the sole representative of Medowie Christian School at the event.

There were over 30 competitors in this event from all over NSW. Keira won her initial heat in a time of 12.19 seconds, to progress

to a final comprising 10 of the fastest young female sprinters in the state.

In an exciting and hard fought final, Keira came second with a Personal Best time of 12.11 seconds, just 0.06 seconds behind Summah Harrison of Tomaree High, who overhauled a quality field to win in 12.05.

Keira told News Of The Area she was thrilled with her result, particularly after an injury and pandemic affected year on the track.

“After a very long lay off from competitions due to Covid-19, this

was the first large competitive race for nearly a year.

“I was very nervous initially in the heat but did well.

“In the final against all of the fastest girls in my age group from all over NSW I ran the fastest I could and achieved a personal best time and came a very close second, and only just beat the third girl!”

Keira is now looking to build on her result in 2021.

“It was such a very exciting time and I am fired up now for future events nationally.”

One-way changes for Nelson Bay

YACAABA Street and Stockton Street in Nelson Bay’s town centre became one-way streets on Thursday 3 December 2020.

The decision to convert these streets to one-way was one of the clear recommendations of the Nelson Bay Independent Parking Panel in 2018.

The changes are designed to improve traffic flow around the town centre by making it easier to navigate, improve pedestrian safety around the Stockton and Donald Street intersections, create 28 additional parking spaces (including 2 accessible spaces) and 6 motorcycle parking spaces by replacing some sections of parallel parking with angle parking and make parking space access quicker with nose-in parking.

We know what you’re thinking: Surely it’s not already time for the Christmas specials?! But alas, 2020, a year that has seemed to both drag and fly by is coming to a close and that means concerts and compilations and permission to eat many, many fruit mince pies.

Singing sensation and all-round legend Delta Goodrem (pictured) hosts this special concert celebration from the Sydney Opera House. The concert is in tribute to the resilience of the Australian spirit of 2020 and features performances from Olivia Newton-John and Vera Blue.

It’s hard to imagine that there could be much left for Maggie Beer to learn about food. But the celebrity chef and <i>Great Australian Bake Off</i> judge has long held a secret longing to discover more about Japanese food. Twenty years after her first visit to Tokyo, Beer returns to the Land of the Rising Sun, hoping to amass enough knowledge to produce a Japanese-inspired feast for her friends back in the Barossa.

Her travels across the country take viewers from Tokyo across the mountains to rural Noto Peninsula, a hidden gem largely undiscovered by tourists, then south to Osaka. Along the way, she finds plenty of inspiration in the country’s expert chefs and elegant dishes.

Boost for local cricket clubs Hunter Cricket receives major boost ahead of new season

WITH the 2020/21 cricket season just around the corner, cricket in the Hunter has received a major boost with the opening of more than $200,000 in new facilities that will help develop the next generation of cricketers in the region.

The new facilities, at Wallsend, Stockton and Salamander Bay, include cricket nets and a cricket pitch which were funded through the ICC T20 World Cup 2020 Cricket Legacy Fund, Australian Cricket Infrastructure Fund, local clubs and councils.

The funding will see the installation of two-laned cricket nets at Lynn Oval,

Mitchell St, Stockton which will be used by the Stockton and Northern District Cricket Club as well as Stockton Junior Cricket Club, and two-laned cricket nets and synthetic centre pitch at Korora Oval, Soldiers Point Road, Salamander Bay which will be used by Nelson Bay Cricket Club.

The NSW ICC T20 World Cup Legacy Fund is delivering up to $6 million to cricket clubs and councils to support the growth in cricket participation in NSW and ensure a lasting legacy from the women’s and men’s T20 World Cups.

Acting Minister for Sport Geoff Lee said the projects

were great examples of how the NSW ICC T20 World Cup 2020 Cricket Legacy Fund was benefiting grassroots cricket across the State.

“We’ve provided more than $4 million to clubs and councils to support 133 projects across NSW during the first two rounds of the Fund and we’re proud to see the positive impacts on our communities across the State,” Mr Lee said.

“These projects will benefit all levels of cricket in the Hunter, from girls and boys picking up a bat and ball for the first time, to the region’s elite players.”

Martin said these facilities would help ensure cricket in the Hunter remains strong.

“These facilities will guarantee the region’s legacy as a breeding ground for some of the State’s best cricketers and allow local players to continue to dream of wearing the baggy green or baggy blue.”

Cricket NSW Chief Executive Officer Lee Germon said these new facilities will help to foster the love

of cricket and increase participation across the broader community.

“We sincerely thank all that were involved in bringing these important projects to fruition,” Germon said.

“These facilities are often not possible without a partnership approach to funding and we’re delighted to have delivered this project with the NSW ICC T20 World Cup 2020 Legacy Fund, Cricket Australia via the Australian Cricket Infrastructure Fund, and the cricket community.”

ICC T20 World Cup Acting CEO Michelle Enright is thrilled the new facilities will

have a lasting positive impact for cricket in the Hunter.

“The Local Organising Committee is delighted to be working in partnership with the NSW Government and Cricket NSW to ensure that hosting two ICC T20 World Cups in Australia has a lasting positive impact,” Ms Enright said.

“We are thrilled that the Legacy Fund has assisted with the construction of new facilities at Wallsend, Stockton and Salamander Bay, projects that will benefit the Hunter’s cricket community well into the future.”

BUYING a renovator’s delight is exciting and sometimes a little daunting. You see the potential but the prospect of opening ‘pandora’s box’ can strike fear into the hearts of even the most enthusiastic renovator. It’s not so much about the work you know is ahead of you, it’s the unknown.

So, even if you’re embarking on a project, it’s best to minimise those unknowns as much as possible to minimize unexpected spend, work and heartbreak over ‘what lies beneath’. Have your buildinginspector bypass the obvious – damaged weatherboards, dicky windows and doors etc and focus on structure, plumbing and electrical wiring. Structure in particular requires serious attention. You may find that previous works have compromised the structural integrity of the property and that could sway you away from the purchase – for good reason. So too with termites.

Minor infestations are generally not dealbreakers. Treatment is effective. But tearing off plaster to find that all your supporting timbers are virtually dust is a serious problem.

It’s a disaster of enormous financial and emotional proportions.

I recommend you pay a few hundred dollars to save yourselves tens of thousands

You raise a valid point. Having said that, why do many meat cuts not resemble the animal they’ve come from?

A pork sausage looks nothing like a pig.

Mince is a clever disguise of some mashed up cow and a schnitzel looks far more appealing than a chicken leg or wing.

I’d say many meat eaters feel more comfortable with food that isn’t confronting or a reminder of what they’re really eating.

Life is full of superficialities. Some people adorn their homes with plastic plants. Synthetic clothes are made to look like natural fibres. Floorboards are replaced with vinyl timber-look designs.

At Christmas, people hang plastic snowflakes from plastic trees and spray fake snow on windows that are closed to keep out the 40 degree heat.

It’s not just our surroundings that are an illusion. Fake lashes. Injected lips.

False nails. Silicon implants. Some people should carry a fire hazard warning as they’d probably melt or combust in heatwave conditions.

Lana, I’ve gone off on a tangent here, but you get the drift. All is not what it seems in many facets of life. Shaping plant-based ingredients into meat replicas seems pretty low on the ‘cause for alarm’ list.

Proposal to introduce a Ferry and Cruise Service to the Tomaree Headland OPINION

THE Tomaree Headland Heritage Group Inc is seeking support for the introduction of Public Transport to the Tomaree Headland utilising the Port Stephens waterway with Ferry and Cruise Services.

To achieve this we believe there is a strong case for the reinstatement of the Jetty (with a pontoon) previously located on the Tomaree Headland foreshore and provides the opportunity to: 1. Provide Public Transport access to the Tomaree Headland and the State Government funded National Parks and WLS Tomaree Coastal Walk by allowing access to Ferry and Cruise operators.

This will go a long way towards addressing

the already very constricted parking and traffic management at the Headland and also the proposed Coastal Walk will undoubtedly attract increased visitation.

Access by Coach is also challenging.

Approximately 200,000 plus people visit the Tomaree Headland every year which creates huge challenges and pressure on the existing parking facilities.

2. Introduction of ferry and cruise services to the Headland has the potential to provide a significant new Tourism product for Port Stephens particularly if a more extensive service is offered to link the various existing jetty facilities at Nelson Bay, Bannisters, Soldiers Point Marina and even Lemon Tree.

Accordingly, we believe the reinstatement of the Jetty on the Tomaree Headland foreshore should be particularly embraced in the Tomaree Coastal Walk Master Plan as a Public Transport option.

In saying this, we are totally supportive of the proposed Tomaree Coastal Walk as it will become a significant tourism asset for Port Stephens and note that their master plan includes a section of their walkway which will connect with the original Jetty site.

The Jetty proposal will also provide access and the opportunity to showcase the significant History which adorns the Tomaree Headland.

The Headland has many significant historic elements including the Torpedo Platform and

other WW11 relics as well as other cultural history such as Indigenous and marine.

Accordingly there is a strong case for the reinstatement of the Jetty and will reduce the reliance on parking at this extremely popular visitor attraction which will significantly enhance the potential for the Tomaree Headland to become a Nationally Significantly Visitor attraction as well as having State and local significance.

The Headland has an impressive list of significant heritage items, highlighting a rich history which needs to be restored, preserved, protected, and interpreted to ensure realisation of their full potential.

There are over 20,000 volunteer surf life savers in NSW all committed to assisting members of the public safely enjoy our beaches.

129 Surf Life Saving Clubs patrol our beaches and create safe places for us to swim every summer.

They also work with our youth to learn positive skills through the Nippers program.

There are dedicated volunteers that perform water rescues and there is a growing number of volunteers that assist with activities on the sand.

So, if being in the water is not your thing, there is still a place to volunteer within a surf life saving club.

Across NSW volunteers can learn to save lives as a First Aider on the beach or join the eyes in the sky team to patrol the water as a UAV operator or pilot.

Surf Life Saving Clubs are always looking for people to help with quick tasks and shortterm volunteering such as an event photographer, historian or joining the gear and equipment team.

LAWYERS have welcomed the New South Wales Government’s announcement to set aside deeds of release, saying the reform was a significant step in improving access to justice for survivors of abuse.

Maurice Blackburn NSW head of abuse law Danielle De Paoli said the reforms which are due before the NSW Parliament early next year would bring New South Wales in line with Queensland, Western Australia and Victoria in ensuring survivors of abuse could receive fair and appropriate compensation for harm caused.

"As the Royal Commission made clear, many survivors of historical abuse were forced to accept completely inadequate settlements from major institutions and sign deeds as part of this that saw them having to waive their rights to a future civil claim," Ms De Paoli said.

"For many survivors that meant being left with little option but to accept compensation that had been harshly minimised in favour of churches or institutions - with survivors forced into inadequate schemes far below what they deserved and without proper advice regarding their legal rights.

"The reforms announced today are a significant step in seeking to address this injustice, including importantly ensuring that survivors who were forced to accept inadequate settlements can now also bring a further civil claim to be compensated appropriately.

"We welcome this announcement that will help to enhance access to justice for survivors and continue to call on other states still yet to act on this reform to do so with urgency," she said.

q The new Surf Life Savers at Fingal Bay Surf Life Saving Club are ready for a busy summer.

By Marian SAMPSON FINGAL Bay Surf Life Saving Club has some Nippers that have recently stepped up into leadership roles.

The club’s new Junior Club Captains for the 2020/2021 season are Liam Pietraszek and Charlize Slade with Vice Captain Campbell Stewart.

Worrall and Finn Hurley were also appointed.

Jennifer Slade of the Fingal Bay Surf Life Saving Club told News Of The Area, “The club is very proud of all our new Surf Life Savers and the Nippers who have stepped up into leadership roles.

“Education is important, making sure people swim

between the flags simply saves lives, it allows the volunteers to focus their activities in an area which is safe in the surf,” she said.

In other news, Under 14’s Nippers have now completed their final assessment for their Surf Rescue Certificate and are now Fingal’s newest patrolling
