Slimming In Lockdown

IN April, along with NSW and the rest of Australia, our local “Waratah Tomaree Slimmers Group� were forced to cease their weekly get togethers at the “Soldiers Point Bowling Club� where each Wednesday evening they meet to weigh in, to discuss health and weight loss issues, and to arrange walks and social outings.

During the lockdown it was arranged for everyone who wished to, to weigh themselves at home or at a Chemist, then text their weekly weight to be recorded. By doing this it was hoped this would help to keep our Slimmers on track to achieve a healthy weight, during isolation.

Even in an area where we pride ourselves on the environment, there is plenty of rubbish to be found.

One woman who has been walking and collecting rubbish along the way for 4 hours every other day during lockdown can be seen making her way from Shoal Bay to Nelson Bay. Amongst the waste that she has been collecting are straws, cigarette butts, dirty nappies and even discarded bongs.

She was picking up waste at Nelson Bay Beach when the NOTA caught up with her.

Shiralyn Skelton told News Of The Area, “I pick up anything at all including nappies, tissues, wipes, and glass, even on the beach there is also a lot of glass.

“Even with the 10c refund on bottles and cans, and I know this is not a lot, it should be enough of an incentive for people to Return and Earn rather than litter,” she said.

She hopes people will start to realise that if they litter, they will be the ones swimming in garbage.

“Ultimately what gets discarded ends up in our waterways, and in the environment.”

Shiralyn is particularly concerned about some of the items that she has been collecting around our waterway, including dirty nappies and soiled toilet paper.

“What you do goes into our drinking water, and we are going to end up drinking it,” she said.

Shiralyn would like everyone to enjoy our environment and to look after it, as a grandmother she has fears for the future and her grandchildren.

Tilligerry Locals Steaming over Station

By Mitch LEES AS the “Swedish Sauna” debacle of the new Tea Gardens Police Station upgrade continues to play out across the harbour from Port Stephens, plans have been revealed for the Lemon Tree Passage’s new Police Station and locals are less than impressed.

The promised $1.5 million dollar relocation of the Cook Parade quarters was announced during last year’s State Election that included a planned period

of community consultation to find a site that best fits the needs of the area.

What the people of the Tilligerry Peninsula look set to inherit instead will be their own wooden sauna box similar to the self-contained unit in Tea Gardens.

Without any community consultation the NSW Government has bypassed local wishes to have the Station built in RAF Park on vacant land and will demolish an existing property near Lemon Tree Passage Library.

Washington said that the whole process has been a shambles and that the local community have been ignored throughout the planned upgrade.

“Every step of this wasteful Police Station program has been bungled, despite promises to consult with the community. The Government didn’t speak with anyone, not even the Police,” said Ms Washington.

Apprentice Wins Award

TESTING Officer, Joshua French, who has just completed his apprenticeship at Ampcontrol, has been awarded the prestigious ‘Stan Rippon Award For Excellence In Trade’ at the 2020 NSW Training Awards - Hunter Region.

The Awards recognise and celebrate the achievements of the best in vocational education and training in NSW, the 2020 Hunter Region Awards.

The winners were announced during a Facebook Live ceremony.

Joshua French, was a finalist in the Apprentice Of The Year – Electrotechnology Certificate III category, received the highly regarded industry accolade for his dedication and excellence within his chosen vocational trade and

commitment to career growth.

Joshua commenced his Electrical Apprenticeship with Ampcontrol in 2016.

Joshua is now employed full time in the Ampcontrol Electrical Testing Team at Tomago NSW. Demonstrating an ongoing commitment to workplace skills and learning, Joshua has completed a Certificate III in Refrigeration & Air Conditioning and Certificate III in Electrotechnology both at TAFE NSW. The prestigious Award For Excellence In Trade honours the passion and tireless work of tradesman Stan Rippon in promoting vocational training in the Hunter Region.

Now retired, Stan holds the position of ViceChairperson of the Hunter Regional Apprenticeship & Traineeship Advisory Committee and remains committed to ensuring the

region remains robust in the employment and training of our traditional tradesmen and women.

With a longstanding history of career development and engineering excellence in the Hunter region, Ampcontrol actively participates and supports industry, education, and community collaboration to provide students with dedicated pathways to STEMrelated qualifications and local employment.

Joshua was not expecting to win the Award but acknowledges that it is a great addition to his resume.

Joshua French told News Of The Area, “When I left school didn’t have much of an idea of which career I wanted however, I secured an airconditioning apprenticeship and after that I knew I wanted to be an Electrician so I became an apprentice electrician.

“The reason I like apprenticeships so much is that you get to learn on job, and know if you like it, and

rocks and recycled oyster shells that were moved from the old Tea Gardens

ramp to the entrance of the Myall River earlier this year, according to

the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI).

The rocks and shells form part of the Oyster project currently being piloted in the lower Myall River.

It uses one of the area’s historical industries, oysters, to boost the river habitat.

The recycled oyster shells were collected from oyster farmers located within Port Stephens, to ensure diseases are not introduced from other estuaries.

Oyster reefs once covered large areas of the local marine environment, providing habitat and food for fish, invertebrates, and other marine life.

Many were lost over time due to over harvesting, habitat removal, dredging,

HOW CAN WE ADD VALUE TO OUR HOME? “What’s the best way we can add value to our home?”

GREAT question! It doesn’t take much to add value, even simple things like keeping your home and property clean and tidy will prolong the life of paint, timber, cabinetry; everything. Decluttering creates a greater sense of space adding value by perception.

Repair damage quickly to maintain value and minimise further damage and expense.

Why not create a lovely outdoor dining/living space either under cover or garden-set – but with some form of weather protection. By Ashley CHRYSLER SYDNEY Mother and cancer survivor, Ophelia Haragli, has raised more than $600,000 to purchase special respiratory masks for local fire services across Australia, including the Medowie and Bulahdelah Rural Fire Brigades.

“So far I’ve been able to

distribute more than 5,000 respiratory masks to those in need in NSW alone,” Ms Haragli said.

“I put a post up on Facebook for people to get in contact with their local Brigade to see if they were interested in receiving respiratory masks and the response was huge, with Captains and even family

members of firefigters messaging me for help.”

As a breast cancer survivor, Ms Haragli was shocked to learn how difficult it was to actually use the traditional P2 masks, and how ineffectively it protected firefighters.

“I started doing my own research on the impacts of bushfire smoke and saw that it can cause cancer so that was right up my alley,” she said.

“Fighting fires has mostly been done using P2 masks, so many of the firefighters I’ve spoken with didn’t even know about these types of respiratory masks.”

The Bulahdelah Rural Fire Brigade were chuffed to receive a batch of masks, hand delivered

by Ms Haragli herself, and posted on Facebook, “This afternoon the Brigade was privileged to receive a gift of 23 respiratory masks worth in excess of $2,000 from a wonderful lady named Ophelia from My Sisters Keeper.”

“We truly appreciate this gift.”

Ms Haragli has delivered nearly 75 masks to Medowie and Bulahdelah Rural Fire Brigades, and hopes that the RFS, who is now conducting their own review of P2 respiratory masks, will be able to continue the work that she has been doing.

Mmm. Look I feel your pain. There's nothing worse than a mum that takes on something new, because mums tend to go into these ventures full tilt. My kids are still unrolling their t-shirts and trying to unknot their underwear that I'd turned into origami swans during my Marie Kondo phase. The casual Buddhist attempt didn't end well either.

But let's look at this from your mum's point of view. It's Plastic Free July and though it may be a bit challenging for you, she's trying to do her bit for the environment. Since you live in Anna Bay, a fantastic part of the world, I bet you really enjoy swimming and surfing and riding your bike on all the amazing bush tracks. What your mum is doing, along with lots of other people, is trying to help keep the bush and the ocean and all the amazing creatures that rely on the environment, including us, happy and healthy.

It may be a bit of a challenge for you, but maybe you could come up with just one way to reduce plastic that will keep your mum happy and let her know you support her. You mentioned there are no snacks in the house and that's because your mum would have tried to buy snacks but realised most of them are packaged in layers of plastic, so you could maybe have a bit of a baking session with her.

You won't be starving and your mum will be so thrilled that maybe she'll splash out on a shampoo bar from the health food shop or supermarket instead of the vinegar option (tell her it's a plastic-free option and she'll be super impressed).

Another thing you could do is bribe her.

Say, 'Mum, I'll support you and Dad with this plastic free thing, but I want the money from the bottles you take to the recycling centre or I'll call you out on social media by letting everyone know that 95 per cent of them are from alcoholic beverages.'

I reckon your mum will be totally up for that sweet little deal, SF, and I won't say it was my idea, or make any mention of the fact it's also Dry July, as long as you don't buy anything that's single-use plastic with the proceeds.

Parkinson Support Back

THROUGH the CoronaVirus pandemic many local community support groups were forced into indefinite suspension of services with their programs facing an uncertain future.

Now as restrictions associated with the lockdown measures of COVID-19 lift, support groups across the Port Stephens LGA have penned in their restart.

The Tomaree Parkinson Support Group’s (TPSG) first meeting will take place at 1:30pm on Thursday, 16 July at the Community Centre situated at the Tomaree Library, Salamander Bay. Bob Crampton, the Group’s Support Leader is looking forward to reconnecting with members and the wider Tomaree community to bring more

awareness and support to those affected by the disease.

“We have a special guest speaker in Charlotte Tayler from the Anna Bay Pharmacy who’ll give a talk on Parkinson’s medication,” said Mr Crampton.

“Ms Tayler will provide important information on issues arising from medication complications that can be a major problem for people living with Parkinson’s.

“This meeting will also be our Annual General Meeting with the election of the new committee.

“The meeting will be conducted under the COVID-19 requirements and people will be requested to self-distance. Hand sanitisers will be required to be used upon entry.”

The TPSG has also recently resumed its exercise

programs that saw ten members come together for seperate sessions at the end of June and start of July.

Mr Crampton said all involved enjoyed the social gathering and a chance to

catch-up after months in isolation.

“It was great getting back together; many happy faces were the reward for being patient and waiting till we were given the go ahead by

POLICE have released CCTV footage as inquiries continue into the stealing of a boat near Port Stephens earlier this month.

Just before 11am on Thursday 18 June 2020, a white Trailcraft vessel was stolen from outside a home on Bagnalls Beach Road, Corlette.

Officers from the Marine Area Command were notified and commenced an investigation.

As part of their inquiries, officers have released CCTV of a white vehicle travelling on Salamander Way, Corlette, in an appeal to locate the driver.

Investigators believe the male driver could assist with their inquiries.

The vehicle has been described as a white Nissan Navara utility 2010-2012 model, with a black bull bar, and black and yellow NSW number plates.

Plastic Free The Story

PLASTIC Free July is a movement that was born in Western Australia and has spread across the world with the global environmental movement now active in 177 countries.

It was in 2018 that local Joanna Atherfold Finn first joined in.

This year will see the author participate once again in a movement which aims to change behaviours.

It has become something that she has been living and breathing for the past two years when she started writing the story of the inspiring movement with Rebecca Prince-Ruiz, the woman who asked a small group of friends and colleagues if they would like to try going plastic free with

her for a month.

The Book Plastic Free takes the reader along the journey of the “accidental campaign” that Prince-Ruiz started.

Rebecca Prince-Ruiz said, “In 2018 I appeared on the ABC TV’s War on Waste episode focused on plastics in the scene where Craig Reucassel stood on the giant plastic ‘footprint’ on Manly Beach and we discussed what people could do to be part of the solution.

“When it went to air that July it was the same time that the supermarkets had introduced a ban on lightweight bags yet one chain kept giving away the thicker plastic bags for free.

“NewSouth publisher Elspeth Menzies was so disappointed with the decision she emailed me the next day to discuss it

and the rest is history,” she said.

Joanna Atherfold Finn told News Of The Area, “I missed the Fremantle book launch due to COVID-19 border restrictions, but thanks to technology I was able to watch it and it was a wonderful celebration of not only the book, but the 10 year anniversary of Plastic Free July.”

Finn’s previous book Watermark is a work of fiction, one which creates characters and takes the reader through short stories with a coastal theme.

This book is very different, taking the reader to a place where we can be better than we were.

She hopes others will be inspired to use less single-use plastic after reading the book and also hopes they will get involved in local plastic-free

initiatives like Plastic Free Port Stephens.

One story that really hit home for Finn was the destructive nature of plastic on Lord Howe Island’s fleshfooted shearwaters.

Lord Howe Island has a pristine environment, yet shearwaters are unwittingly feeding chicks plastic fragments.

Dr Jennifer Lavers works with the shearwater population and described how she once found 276 pieces of plastic in one chick.

“That is just unfathomable.

“It’s sickening; it’s negligent; it’s a problem that humans are one hundred per cent responsible for and it is not some distant example.

“This issue is on our doorstep,” said Finn.

The Tilligerry Art Gallery is happy that the gallery has re-opened after the initial COVID-19 shutdown

THE Gallery is located in the old Fire Station and offers visitors an opportunity to see and purchase a range of local arts and crafts.

“All works are from local artists in the area, supporting the buy local movement,” she said.

The Gallery is open Tuesday to Friday from 10am to 2pm and 11am to 3pm on weekends.

Big Turn Out For Probus

WINTER would normally see our older residents indulging in indoor activities.

COVID-19 has encouraged us all to get outside.

The members of the Probus Club of Port Stephens were seen this week braving a cool winters morning at Soldiers Point Marina.

The group is looking forward to once again holding its regular meetings and enjoying an array of

activities as restrictions lift further.

This was one of the biggest turnouts for Probus since March when the lockdown started.

David Heath of the Probus Club told News Of The Area, “The breeze off

the Soldiers Point water chilled the energetic and determined walkers from Port Stephens Probus Club.

“Within minutes of starting, the sun broke through and everybody enjoyed a stroll round the point and through

the suburbs, then back to the Boat Shed Cafe for a steaming coffee which was enjoyed sitting in the sun on what must be the most idyllic way to spend a winter’s day anywhere on this planet,” he said.

As usual the conversation and catch up was vibrant with concern, laughter and opinion.

The “Probeans” drifted off to their individual day’s activities having started the day on a double positive note.

FOLLOWING a boat side inspection of the lower Myall river sand dredging site, Local MP Kate Washington declared, “The sand dredging is a win win for the community, restoring the health of the Myall River and building a stockpile of sand to replenish Jimmy’s Beach.”

The active local MP was accompanied by Rick Wraight, from the local Chamber of Commerce, Andrew Stanilands, the MidCoast Project Manager, and local advocate Gordon Grainger.

Kate Washington added, “I thank the community for its sensible and strong advocacy, without it this would not be happening. I also thank MidCoast Council for gaining the necessary approvals

and funding, then making it all happen. It was terrific to see the progress that’s already been made and I’m sure the entire community is looking forward to seeing it completed.”

The MidCoast Council’s dredging operation in the lower Myall River is now over one month into the 27 week project and progressing well with 27,000 cubic metres of sand removed from the eastern channel to date.

A total of 120,000 cubic metres of sand will be removed from the channel over the 27 weeks of the project.

The build-up of sand over time has resulted in several shallow zones throughout the channel which impede the ability of boats to move safely along the eastern channel.

Dredging will improve

PORT Stephens Council launched it’s Have a Yarn community connections program today aimed at reducing social isolation experienced as a result of the COVID-19 global pandemic.

Residents are invited to knit and crochet designs that will be installed across the Port Stephens region helping to regain a sense of community, creativity and connection for all involved.

Port Stephens Council Community Development and Engagement Coordinator Amber Herrmann says the simple act of crafting will help promote conversation and connection for those who need it within our community.

“While the health

of ourselves and our community has been the priority during the global pandemic, it also impacted our way of life, connections and social networks creating a sense of isolation and loneliness for many.

“This fun, inclusive and creative project will give those involved a feeling of contributing to the broader community, a sense of pride and connection to their local area while maintaining a physical distance,” they said.

Mayor Ryan Palmer says it is a great excuse to dust off the knitting needles.

“This initiative is such a fun and simple way to spark connections and reduce isolation during this time.

“I’d encourage anyone who wants to get involved to get out the knitting needles,

dig through your old wool supplies and call up a friend to have a yarn,” he said.

Crafters of all levels can take part and submit their finished creations to Council’s libraries, administration building or Visitor Information Centre no later than Monday 17 August 2020.

The designs will be installed across public spaces in Port Stephens throughout September 2020 — thanks to funding from the NSW Department of Communities and Justice.

however, are managing to average 1,000 cubic metres daily. The dewatering and stockpile management is working perfectly, with clean clear water being returned to the port. Several weeks in and everything is running smoothly and to schedule.

The dredge will continue to place sand on the stockpile.

While the total cost of the project is $1.7million, Council successfully received $850,000 in funding through the NSW Government’s ‘Rescuing Our Waterways’ program, to cover half of the

Boat users are advised to be aware of changed conditions in the area during the works period, including underwater, anchored pipelines and limited thoroughfare in the channel.

A second closure of the

boat ramp will be required at the end of the dredging, which is expected to be in October.

Trees planted by Air Force volunteers FIVE thousand trees are being planted by Air Force volunteers to safe-guard native koalas. Staff are rolling up their sleeves to plant a tree for every member working at RAAF Base Williamtown, in support of a feedstock tree planting project for the Port Stephen’s Koala Rescue Service.

With Air Force personnel leading an action committee made up of Australian Public Servants and civilian members from community organisations, the project has to-date also attracted support from branches of Defence Industry as well as local businesses and services working together in partnership on this unique Williamtown community

project – the first of its type.

The Port Stephens Koala Rescue Service supports the care for injured, sick and orphaned koalas and the support from RAAF Base Williamtown and project participants will have a positive impact on the native koala populations; assisting them to thrive under the initiative.

Planning for the project commenced in May 2019 with the base offering assistance; identifying vacant Defence land to support the cultivation of feedstock for the koala hospital.

Remotely located, a 40-hectare Defence site at Lavis Lane in Williamtown, was

assessed as ‘fit-for-purpose’ to provide the appropriate environment to plant, grow and nurture suitable feed stock with the potential for additional tree planting.

Action committee member and Lead Ecologist for the Port Stephen’s Council, Mr Lee McElroy provided specialist advice in relation site preparation and ongoing maintenance which has been critical to the success of the project. Worimi Community Elders were also consulted.

Following the consultation and planning phase, a successful trial planting phase which occurred in late March 2020 tested and informed the active planting phase which

ON Wednesday 1 July Meals on Wheels hosted its annual morning tea at the Hawks Nest community hall as a thank you to its thirtyfive volunteer delivery drivers.

Meredyth Rae, the officer manager at Meals on Wheels told News Of the Area, “Today we are having a morning tea specifically for the

deliverers of meals because each day in the kitchen the staff and the volunteers get to sit around having morning tea and enjoy each other’s company but the deliverers don’t get that comradery.”

“Because of this once a year in the middle of the year we like to give them morning tea so that they can get together and chat and laugh as well.”

Ms Rae explained how important the role of the volunteers is to

the operation of Meals on Wheels, “Basically we couldn’t be a service without the volunteer deliverers and kitchen staff” Ms Rae told News of the Area, “We want to thank our volunteers very much because they do a fantastic job and we can’t do it without them.”

Judy Poole has been a delivery driver with Meals on Wheels for over three years and said what appeals to her about the organisation is the social interaction she receives and the satisfaction of providing a valuable service to the community, “It’s a great group of people.”

“I have never seen so many people care about what they are doing.”

“From a delivery standpoint it’s about making contact with the people who need it.”

“It is about having a fiveor ten-minute chat with the clients.”

“It’s really nice touching base with our clients, it’s just a joy.”

“Many of them really depend on Meals on Wheels for their food.”

Meals on Wheels has been active in the Hawks Nest / Tea Gardens community since the mid nineteen eighties and Jean Ryan is the longest serving delivery driver.

“Hockey offers an optional training session mid-week but training and skills are held prior to each Saturday morning with each age groups training and match games running for around 1.5 hours,” he said.

Each member gets a club shirt when they join and parents supply shoes, shin

pads and mouth guards.

The current season will go from July to September and all games are held at Salamander Bay. You can find out more and register to try hockey at Salamander Bay on the clubs website or Facebook page.
