IRRAWANG High School’s talented Drum Corps has

achieved national recognition and success at the Australian National Percussion Eisteddfod Drumline Battle Competition.

The Drum Corps competed against schools across the nation.

The Corps also teamed

up with the Senior Dance Ensemble in the Own Choice section and achieved a highly commended.

IN what can only be described as an absolute tragedy a school boy has lost his life after being hit by a bus at

Raymond Terrace on Tuesday morning.

About 8.30am (Tuesday 6 August 2019), the boy

was riding his bike along on Mount Hall Road, before he crossed the intersection at Clyde Circuit where he was

hit by the bus.

Officers from Stephens-Hunter District arrived

Despite best efforts by paramedics, the boy died at the scene.

Irrawang High School Drum Corps Achieve Third Place at the Australian National Percussion Eisteddfod Drumline Battle Competition

Irrawang High School was the only government high school to enter from New South Wales.

In an interview Ms Robinson told News Of The Area, “This is the first time we have entered the Drumline competition of the event as this section only began last year, and the Eisteddfod was in Queensland in 2018.”

Ms Robinson said, “I am proud

of them and absolutely elated for them, as I appreciated and recognised the enormity of what they had just achieved.”

“This outstanding result is due to the exceptional teamwork of the whole ensemble, their commitment and their passion to drum, as one.”

When asked what a drumline is, Ms Robinson said, “A drumline is a section of percussion instruments playing as an ensemble, originating in

the USA as a style of drumming and movement.”

“Our drum program has developed from eight drummers in 2005 to over 70 drummers in the program in 2019.”

“We are the largest drumline program in Australia!”

“The Senior Drum Corps rehearses three times a week.”

The Drum Corps program at Irrawang High has three ensembles, including Year 7, Intermediate, and the Senior Drum Corps.

Memories of Bill Howard

LONG time Salt Ash resident Bill Howard has passed away after a short illness. He spent his final years at an aged care facility at Wahroonga, Sydney. He was in his eighties.

Bill started his working life as a maths teacher in the western town of Binnaway. After city appointments he rose through the ranks to become a teachers’ college and university lecturer. He also served in the CMF attaining the rank of captain.

He had a passion for history and was one of the key contributors to the publication of ‘A History of the Tilligerry Peninsula’ – an authoritative work which went to a second edition selling some

Trees for Planet Ark’s National Tree Planting Day 2019

HELD on Sunday, 28 July, Planet Ark’s National Tree Day encourages schools, groups, and individuals in the community to plant trees.

According to Planet Ark’s website since the Tree Day began in 1996, over 25 million trees have been planted by more than 4 million people over the past 23 years.

Port Stephens Councillor, Mr Giacomo Arnott participated in the National Tree Day for the second year.

He told News Of The

Area, “The protection of our environment is the world’s most pressing issue, and getting our community involved means we all take responsibility for this problem and work together to protect it.”

“I joined in because I want to be part of the solution.”

“It is my second time being out planting trees in Boomerang Park, and it is always great fun!”

“It is important for all of us to work to protect Boomerang Park and, by extension, our local environment.”

“I encourage everyone

to keep an eye on what the Raymond Terrace Tidy Towns group is up to, and join in next time they have a planting day.”

A statement by Planet Ark said that 70% of Australians believe individual actions can have an impact on global environmental issues like climate change.

Planet Ark’s first edition of the Tree Report found that a 5% increase in tree cover can reduce nearby daytime temperatures by 2.3 degrees Celsius.

Recently Varley’s Special Vehicles Division welcomed a visit by The Hon. David Elliott, Minister for Police and Emergency Services who inspected the Tomago production line of the NSW Emergency Services Vehicles.

60 Years of Bowls

SOLDIERS Point Ladies Bowling Club are celebrating 60 years of bowls.

The Club now is a far cry from the one that the first members played at.

It now sports an undercover all weather green.

Once, it was whites only on the greens, much has changed in bowls and the ladies now

Carnival which bowlers from far-and-wide attend.

Then on 11 August 12 ladies have been selected to play in a tournament called Waves to Wine which is played at Kurri Kurri Bowling Club.

Lyn Yeomans told News Of The Area, “This is followed by “The Grade 2 Pennant team, who won the Flag going off to the State Pennant Play Off at Kingscliff.”

While the whites are gone the passion and commitment of the players hasn’t changed much.

Over the past 60 years the ladies believe that they have won around 13 pennants.

The club currently has 110 lady bowlers.

Woman Charged after crash kills child

A WOMAN has been charged following a crash north of Newcastle, where a child died, last month.

About 5.50pm on Sunday 21 July 2019, a 29-year-old woman was driving a Mazda sedan north on New Line Road, East Seaham,

when the vehicle left the road, hit an electricity pole and rolled.

The woman and a three-yearold girl in the rear passenger seat suffered facial lacerations and were taken to John Hunter Hospital for treatment.

A six-year-old boy in the rear of the vehicle died at the scene.

Officers from the Crash Investigation Unit commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Nature Art and Print Making

THE Port Stephens Community Arts Centre artists pay tribute to, mountains which are the source of our rivers, meandering through the landscape and ending up at the sea.

The artworks on exhibition until 10 September depict nature providing a life giving environment.

There is also a second exhibition by the centres revitalised Print Making Group which has a display of the culmination of 12 month’s printmaking.

The group has explored many techniques of lino cutting, etching and multi

plate printmaking and plan to explore collagraph and mono prints in the future.

This will involve experimenting with different inks and qualities of paper, sometimes with the printing press and with recycled objects.

The group meets on the second and fourth Thursdays in the Manoora Room at 10am.

Whenever we have a barbecue, my husband cooks the meat and I prepare salads, bread rolls, cheese platters, desserts, marinades and all other accompaniments and yet our guests always thank him for the great meal.

Pretty much all he has to do is chuck some snags and steaks on a hotplate. It annoys me.

THE Aussie barbecue is one of our fair land’s great traditions. It has ritual status in the ‘burbs. Walk down any street on a Sunday afternoon and you will smell the unmistakable aroma of burning flesh on backyard barbies. Invariably, someone will say, ‘Gee that smells great. It’s making me salivate.’ Then they’ll grunt and scratch themselves, reminding us that we have indeed descended from the apes. It’s Culture with a capital C, Mrs OW. For the man who feels somewhat inadequate in the kitchen, a barbecue gives him renewed status as a culinary expert.

There’s a lot of technique involved in getting the barbecue just right. First you have to scrape off the previous barbecue’s remnants (sate sauce, sausage gristle and burnt onion rings), then you need to sizzle up the plate with some beer to steam off any rodent poo; next you oil it up and then you carefully arrange your slabs of meat. It is obligatory to hold a Stubby during this process, and for some, it is also important to wear an apron that features large plastic breasts or catchy slogans such as ‘Natural Born Griller’.

The meat has to be cooked just right. A lot of men like their meat rare, sometimes so rare that it bleeds into all those lovely salads and potato bakes you have made, rendering them inedible. But let’s face it, your guests aren’t really there for your salads. They are there for an experience that has a not so subtle whiff of caveman about it. Let this one go and remember that taking control of his tongs is a form of emasculation that you really don’t need. You’ve no doubt got enough going on.

TILLIGERRY RSL is keen to keep on display military memorabilia both inside the Club in cabinets and outside for all to see.

Look at the photos. The large concrete triangular pyramids are tank traps which were retrieved from Stockton Beach.

They were designed to block the passage of Japanese tanks if they happened to land during WW2.

The ones in the photo are dated 1942. Some of them are still brought to the surface after heavy seas pound the foreshore.

They were a part of the coastal defence network which included a large naval gun on top of Tomaree headland as well as machine gun emplacements and torpedo tubes covering the Port’s entrance.

The gun on top of the mound is one of the most successful anti aircraft guns of all time.

THERE has been a new monarch crowned at Box Beach, Shoal Bay with Kurtis Herman taking the silverware on a weekend of celebration and perfectly formed two-tothree-foot wedges.

The annual Burton Toyota King of the Box surfing event, which ran in memory of Boxy core-lord Andrew ‘Tubeseeker’ Lilly, saw the regions saltwater fraternity come together to participate and appreciate the world of wave riding in Port Stephens.

The event was opened by a paddle out for Andrew with friends and family gathering in the early dawn of Saturday morning to acknowledge and farewell one of Box Beach’s pioneers.

The ‘Tubeseeker’ must of been watching from above as the wave gods sent competitors a full weekend of crystal blue portals to drive through.

Saturday saw the open women, cadets and legends take to the salt with local ripper Elle Clayton-Brown taking the tiara in the open

women’s division and Eden Hasson, another local pocket rocket, grabbing the crown in the cadets.

The legends saw Mitch Dawkings take out the title against the Hasson brothers in Chris and Simon in a battle that’s been years in the making.

On Sunday the open men and juniors got underway with a few sore heads after the official event launch at the Shoal Bay Country Club on Saturday night.

Ross Cadden from the Great Lakes region snapped his way through a talented field that consisted of Port Stephen’s finest in Joshua Stretton and Mike ClaytonBrown to take the jewels in the juniors.

In the open mens Kurtis Herman was surgical on his run to the finals managing to find some deep vision to land himself a perfect 10-point ride in the semis.

Local tube-pig Chris Michalak bounced back from a bruising Saturday night and was able to reach the final but couldn’t capitalise and placed

q The Nelson Bay Hockey Club Team playing for the Hunter Hockey Association at the NSW State Championships.

STICKS were raised and goals scored by the Nelson Bay Hockey Club Members representing the Hunter Hockey Association when they took out the win in the over 40s ladies, at the 2019 Hockey NSW Full State Women’s Masters Championships.

The event was held in Bathurst over four days.

There was great success for the Hunter Hockey Association at the Masters State Championships with the over 35s, over 40s and over 60s all winning their divisions.
