SOME businesses are keeping up morale by supporting local charities.

Tomago Aluminium’s workforce has been continuing its vital fundraising program supporting Hunter-based charities.

The program is an employee initiative that has been active for more than 30 years.

The Tomago Workplace Giving Fund has raised more than two million dollars for local charities, it is not slowing down, pandemic or otherwise.

The Fund’s most recent recipients are Soul Café, Carrie’s Place, Got Your back Sista and headspace

Marine Rescue Port Stephens scrambled.

Whenever there are people in the water there is a need to expedite the rescue.

Even in Australia’s warm coastal waters hypothermia can set in.

The team from Marine Rescue Port Stephens were at the vessel within 45 minutes of the call out.

They transferred the four

people from the water to the vessel where all four were found to be suffering from hypothermia.

Ben van der Wijngaart, Unit Commander of Marine Rescue - Port Stephens, told News Of The Area, “The crew provided first aid to the one wounded person and warmed all survivors on the trip back to d’Albora Marinas at Nelson Bay.

The rescue was successful.

The speed of response is a testament to the dedication of the volunteers of the service and can partly be attributed to the floating dock facility which is located at the Marine Rescue berths which allows for briefings, and storage of essential equipment “The night breeze and temperature drop made a fast response important with wet people cooling off quickly,” he said.

Mayday calls are made when life is in danger.

“Traditionally we have a morning tea onsite and invite charity representatives and our employees to attend but because of the necessary COVID-19 precautions we had two morning tea presentations a week apart and, because of social distancing, only had a small group of people at each one.

“While we were unable to encourage people to gather, we were able to give the money to the groups who need it and that was the most important thing for us,” Ms Burns said.

We can even arrange home delivery if required,” she said.

Membership to Port Stephens libraries is free.

Members also have opportunities to access eresources such as ebooks, emagazines, efilm, emusic and enewspapers as well as our collections of audio, books, DVDs and magazines.

These services are all online and can be accessed from home with your library card and password.

Technology now allows libraries to deliver online events and author talks are a providing new opportunities for us and our members to access online.

Library staff have been recording online story times, Read and Rhyme sessions and online learning tutorials that can be viewed on our Facebook page or Youtube. Raymond Terrace Library have also scheduled an online event Stand Up for Poetry Slam open mic showcase on 14th August.

You can also hear from local author Joanna Atherfold Finn and West Australian Rebecca PrinceRuiz for a discussion about the plastic free movement and their book on 20th August. Online registration is required to join these events.

Chamber President calls for Masks Now

AS we watch the numbers and hope for a downward trend in cases of COVID-19 in Victoria, many in NSW are worried.

Woolworths chains are now asking customers to wear a mask in their stores in NSW as well as Victoria.

Queensland has closed its borders to all residents of Great Sydney, which will have a huge impact on our already

struggling aviation industry.

Local Port Stephens jobs have already been lost in this sector.

In Sydney there are calls to make wearing masks mandatory now, before the cases spike as they have in Greater Melbourne.

Port Stephens Business Chamber President Leah Anderson is also advocating for masking up now.

In a statement the

Committee for Sydney called for face masks to be made mandatory in public places in Sydney.

Anderson wants to see a similar initiative here in Port Stephens.

The advocacy group said that the move would help to slow the spread of COVID-19 infections and reduce the need for Sydney to go back into lockdown.

CEO of the Committee for Sydney, Gabriel Metcalf said “It’s time to

require masks in Sydney.

“Doing so now may be our best chance to avoid a second lockdown.”

Anderson wants to avoid a second lockdown especially in light of the number of businesses that have now changed their operations due to recent local cases.

“NSW has had an exemplary response to the pandemic and is doing an incredible job with contract tracing and testing.

“It may turn out that this focus on known clusters and contact tracing is enough to crush the virus.

“But if the numbers get large, they will overwhelm the ability of contract tracing to work.

“A requirement to wear masks could be an essential tool for reducing community transmission and allowing Sydney to avoid the fate of Melbourne.”

Port Stephens SES On Front Foot

THE Port Stephens SES have been busy responding to calls due to the east coast low.

A spokesperson for the unit told News Of The Area, “At around 1300 yesterday Port Stephens SES began receiving calls for multiple jobs that included flooding, water ingress, flood rescue, vehicles in water, livestock assessments, water entering churches, houses and businesses.

“Within 30 minutes, we had five separate teams in the field supporting and responding to incidents affecting members of our community in their time of need.”

The unit responded to jobs which came in from multiple areas across the Port Stephens area, including Medowie, Williamtown, Raymond Terrace, Hinton, Fullerton Cove and Karuah.

The unit also provided in excess of 300 sand bags to members of the public which were in addition to the 100 sand bags that the unit deployed and used with our flood and storm teams.

“It is important to remember that we are part of a brilliant and supportive organisation and this includes

the provision of training in all manner of activities and equipment use,” the spokesperson said.

Members are trained in working at heights, chainsaw, flood rescue, flood boat operations, road crash rescue, vehicle operations, equipment maintenance, communications, field command and more.

Port Stephens SES comprises of just over 70 members, all of whom come together to assist our community in times of storm, flood, road crash, industrial and domestic rescue.

The unit has a small fleet of vehicles and currently have a Heavy Rescue (PTS47), Medium Rescue (PTS45), Medium 4WD Rescue (PTS46), Light Rescue / Flood Rescue (PTS42) and Light Storm vehicle (PTS31).

There is a job for everyone in the SES. In the operations team, heavy vehicle drivers, chainsaw operators, storm technicians, flood boat operators, floodwater rescue technicians, road crash rescue operators and other specialist skills such as large animal rescue operations.

It is an ancillary service for when cancer patients cannot access any other reliable form of personal transport for treatments and appointments.

AT face value, I can see your point. You have given the clothes to your friend out of the goodness of your heart, and you would expect that little Timmy would be happy to receive the Ninja Turtle singlet and Samantha would be thrilled with those faux leather boots, but alas they are now there for the world to see, along with a catchy sales pitch: ‘Vintage singlet and vegan boots in great used condition’ which is certainly not the description you would have given them.

The thing is, Elizabeth, there is actually zero monetary advantage in selling second-hand clothes to social media communities. I tell you, those people are savvier than any nanna at a Garage Sale. They are as cunning as Victor Lustig (Google him). As relentless as rodents. As tight as a fish’s . . . you get the idea.

I discovered this the hard way when I tried to sell my seven-year-old son’s soccer boots. They were in immaculate condition because, let’s be honest, he spent half the season on the bench and even when on the field he wasn’t too keen on getting his boots scuffed. They cost me $100, so I put them on the local marketplace site for $10, complete with photos from various angles and a detailed sizing chart with European conversions.

That probably took me about half an hour, so I was already on slave-labour rates. Well, then the queries started.

Would I accept $5? Ah, no. Would I drive the boots to the purchaser who lived half an hour away? Nope. Would I arrange for free postage (which would be more than the asking price)?

Negative. Would I take some more pictures including one of the shoe next to a ruler? Nein, du nerviger Dummkopf. Trying to sell that one pair of soccer boots became a full-time job. I had to take annual leave to keep up with the enquiries.

I never sold those boots, Elizabeth. They are still in the wardrobe. My son is now sixteen and playing rugby. His feet have grown another ten centimetres. The boots are still listed on the site, waiting patiently for someone to pay me a measly ten bucks so I can put it towards the therapy surrounding my lacklustre sales career.

So, the point is, let your friend try to sell those items. She will be burdened by the tactics of people who do this for a living. They grind you down until you end up offering to pay them just so they’ll shut up and take the goods off your hands.

Karuah River and the Port Stephens estuary showcased

A JOINT project that addresses multiple impacts on the Karuah River and the Port Stephens estuary is being showcased during Landcare Week from 3-9 August, with more farmers invited to join the project.

Through an innovative partnership between local farmers, Midcoast Council, Hunter Local Land Services, Landcare Australia and Karuah Great Lakes Landcare, the Karuah-Borland Landcare Program is beginning the journey to improve the health of the Karuah River.

A video has been produced which showcases the Karuah Catchment Grants program, the first part of this three-year project.

“The health of a river is generally the culmination of the surrounding impacts that occur throughout its catchment.

Things like unsealed roads, or impacts from clearing or agriculture, allow nutrients and sediment to slowly make their way across the land when it rains or through little creeks and drains down into the main trunk of the river – and in the case of the Branch and Karuah Rivers, into Port Stephens,” said MidCoast Council’s Catchment Management Coordinator, Louise Duff.

“Healthy wetlands and native vegetation are essential

for healthy rivers. Wetlands and vegetation corridors along riverbanks operate like the river’s kidneys, filtering out these nutrients and sediment from the land, while also providing habitat for native species and serving as connecting corridors for these species to move through. Protecting these remaining wetlands and riparian corridors is a key part of restoring the health of the overall river.”

Combining forces, the partnering agencies are contributing over $500,000 to this project which is being matched by eight landholders through their own labour and cash contributions, to protect these vital habitats on their properties. Altogether, over 270 hectares of wetlands and 50 hectares of riparian vegetation will be secured on The Branch and Karuah Rivers.

Bryan Royce is putting the final touches on a fencing project that will protect some 50-odd hectares of wetlands on his property ‘La Grande Lande’.

Bryan explains that the cattle get into the wetlands and pug the soil, generally making a mess particularly when it’s wet.

The new internal fence allows him to manage the cattle and keep them out of the wetlands for most of the year. Along with

q the installation of new water points for the cattle, he’s able to get the most out of the good pasture.

“This is a great example of multiple public agencies, nonprofit organisations and the community coming together to solve big complex problems,” says Geoff Le Messurier, Senior Land Services Officer with Hunter Local Land Services who worked with the farmers to get these projects across the line.

“In the end it was a beautiful celebration!

“We are so grateful to the Nursing Home staff for caring for Nanna & ensuring we could have a safe celebration “Also to Port Stephens locals on the Pay it Forward Facebook Page for their kindness and sending so many beautiful messages to Nanna,” she said.

Nanna Freda received a letter from the Queen to commemorate reaching her century.

Kick start for Community and local businesses

MORE than $500,000 in funding has been made available to kick start the community and local businesses across Port Stephens as part of Council’s 2020/21 funding program.

This year Council has announced its biggest funding pool ever with 11 streams available — each designed to deliver the greatest benefits where the community needs it the most.

The new funding streams have been created to address the impact of COVID-19 by supporting our most vulnerable community members, reinvigorate our streets and neighbourhoods, and support local businesses.

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer says the annual funding program aims to help strengthen and empower the community manage the effects of COVID-19.

“This year, our program offers over $500,000 in funding to help our community respond to the ongoing impacts of coronavirus.

“We are hoping to fund as many grassroots local projects that genuinely support local people, bring life and vibrancy to our

Probus Club Outing Nelson Bay Golf Club

WINING and dining; is a skill at which members of Fingal Bay Probus Club are remarkably adept at.

Recent Zoom meetings and walking for pleasure in favourite areas resulted in a gathering at Sandpiper Restaurant in Nelson Bay organised by the ever-capable Vicki and John Archer.

Julia Redlich told News Of The Area, “Lovers of seafood (join the club!) could select from swordfish or trout with mango salsa, others preferred

other dishes from the menu such as cashew nut butter chicken, flavour-filled pork belly or roasted pumpkin ravioli.”

There was plenty of wine and great conversation.

There couldn’t be a better way to underline the value of Probus-based fun and friendship.

This is the first time that a limited number of members could have a get together inside together and the members truly enjoyed themselves and the semblance of normalcy that the get together brought

to their lives.

Fingal Bay Probus Club usually meets at the Fingal Bay Sports & Recreation Club, 100 Rocky Point Road, Fingal Bay before the big shut-downs and looks forward to the time that general meetings can start there again, as well as the usual activities such as barbecues, book-lovers meetings, wine appreciation and learning from guest speakers.

“Fingers crossed that this will happen soon,” she said.

Many members of the club are missing their monthly meetings and social activities.

Croquet Club successful return to competition

IN consultation with the NSW Office of Sport, Croquet NSW adopted COVIDSafe Guidelines that allowed the return of competitive croquet from 1st July 2020.

Members of Nelson Bay Croquet Club have entered some of the competitions that have been played and have enjoyed success.

18th-20th July: Cheryl Lloyd and Sandy Tawa (together with associate member Pamela Barnwell) represented the Club in the NSW GC Women’s Open Singles Championship held at Tempe.

Cheryl and Pamela qualified for the final playoff. Cheryl lost to eventual winner Alison Sharpe of Killara Croquet Club 3-7 1-7 while Pamela lost to Rosalyn Johnstone of Sutherland Croquet Club 7-0 6-7 4-7.

Sharp Reds

THE Medowie Marauders have fallen agonisingly short of opening their divisional rugby account by dropping the lollies and going down 14 to 12 to a resurgent Pokolbin Reds in Winecounty on Saturday.

The Marauders were looking sharp before the match, coming off an intense preseason with a convincing win over the Griffins weeks prior.

Medowie started strongly with some hardened defence repelling waves of Pokolbin phase play through the

forwards, but ultimately their discipline would see them fall on their own sword as the Reds crossed the line early.

The Marauders were able to hit back soon after when a hot heeled Clayton Burke danced through a tired Reds line to put Taniela Rabolalele away for a five pointer.

With the kick successful the scores were locked at 7 a piece as the waterboys hit both team’s huddles to administer coach directives.

It seems the Reds were listening as they immediately struck back through the elusive Kerryn Ball at Halfback who

Coach Lancaster heaped praise on both sides as they played some rough and tumble rugby for 80 minutes.

“Today was an incredibly tough match against a quality team,” said Lancaster. ”Credit to the Reds they played a direct, well controlled game and applied pressure in the right places to grind out a

well-deserved victory.

“For the Marauders I thought our defensive systems were again very strong however the squad will need to be more controlled with their discipline moving forward.”

Paul Fletcher took man of the match for Medowie as his expertise at the breakdown shone through.

The Marauders next game is this Saturday against the Waratahs at Boyd Oval, Medowie.

Terrace overpower Stroud IT was a picture perfect afternoon for rugby league as crowds gathered at the Stroud Showgrounds for the Raiders first home game of the season.

The three o’clock kickoff saw the home side welcome the Raymond Terrace Magpies, a team with a point to prove after a humbling 62-16 loss to Hamilton the week prior.

Stroud came into the match off the back of a tough 16-16 draw with Dungog, and chasing their first win of the season.

After a cagey opening five minutes, the deadlock was broken when Raymond Terrace’s Robert Quinn capitalised on a spilled ball to score the first points of the game.

The try was converted by

Luke Handsaker to give the Magpies an early 6-0 point lead.

Stroud hit back almost immediately however, with Cal Lund intercepting a pass on his own line and showing an impressive change of pace to complete the length of field run to score.

Raymond Terrace crossed again on fourteen minutes through Luke Handsaker, before Will Tarpin sent his man the wrong direction with a well executed dummy to score another, giving the Magpies a well deserved 16-6 lead.

Stroud reduced the deficit shortly after, with Fred Kierce leaving three Terrace players in his wake as he stepped his way to the line to score.

Stroud were now enjoying their first spell of sustained attacking pressure, before some individual magic from Luke Handsaker saw him score with a run from within his own half to stun the home side on the break.

“Absolutely proud of the team, it was a great result,”

he said.

“Even through the phone I could hear the talk from the girls.”

Chappell mentioned in particular the performances of Tash Harris and Holly Fisher-Webster.

“Tash seemed to do very, very well. Obviously as well you have Holly guiding the team around the paddock.

She is an absolute asset to the team, she has terrific ball skills and gets the ball wide well,” he said.

Stroud now sit top of the leaderboard after two wins from two.

The teams went into the sheds at half-time with Stroud trailing 22-12.

Stroud started the brighter after the break, with Harry Reid reducing the deficit to four points, after a powerful solo try and conversion.

Both teams crossed the line in the following minutes to bring the scores to 28-24, leaving Stroud with a lot of work to do to get the victory.

Clinton Quartly then scored for the Magpies, before Stroud’s Fred Kierce crossed again for the home side, setting up a thrilling finish, with Stroud trailing by four points with six minutes to play.

THE Final of the Club Major Singles was played on Sunday 2nd August and Billy Smith continued his consistent form that he had displayed throughout the series to defeat John Price fairly comfortably by 31-18 shots.

The Semi-Finals played the day before, were contrasting games with Billy easily

accounting for Brian Hitchcock by 31- 14 shots.

The other Semi was a different story however, with John having to play some outstanding bowls to overpower Dick Hadley.

John was behind by 22-28 shots and seemingly headed for defeat when he produced some memorable bowls, including 3 on the last end to clinch victory by 31-30 shots.

Club Pairs commenced on the same weekend and results for next edition.

Stroud forward, but in the end it was Raymond Terrace who had the final say, with Brooke Roach bulldozing his way over the Stroud defense and then the line to finish the game 38-30 to the away side.

Raymond Terrace player coach Brooke Roach, who’s try made the difference in the final minutes, said he was pleased with how his team had played overall. .

“I thought we were a bit sloppy in defence, but it has been a long time between games so that will be a factor. I was pretty happy with our attack,” he said.

He also praised Stroud for the spirit in which the game was played.

“Stroud put up a good fight, they have a bit of grit and a never give up attitude so it is great to come up against them.

It is really nice to be back on the field. So good to see all the boys back out there.”

Raymond Terrace will hope to build on their victory when they take on Dungog in their Round Four matchup on Saturday.

Stroud will chase their first win of the season away at Morpeth.

q Stroud players jubilant at the final whistle as they defeat their Mallabula rivals 26 to 6.

FOLLOWING a 22-point victory in their season opener against Dungog, Stroud Raiders kicked off their Ladies League Tag fixture with the Mallabula Panthers on Saturday in the mood to extend on their positive start to the season.

Stroud started the strongest, and their early period of dominance paid off after ten minute when Milly Harrison showed great speed to find a gap in a stretched Mallabula defence to score the try to put the Raiders in front.

Stroud crossed the line again after fourteen minutes to put them ten points to the good.

Up to this point, Mallabula had struggled to break out of their half, before a rare break led to a converted try against the run of play, reducing the deficit to four points.

Unfazed, Stroud responded immediately, and went into the half time break with a 16-6 lead, after an amazing solo try and conversion.

It was more of the same after the break, when some dazzling footwork from the electric Milly Harrison put the finishing touches on a freeflowing passing move from Stroud.

Gaps were beginning to appear in the Mallabula defensive line, as they struggled to contain the speed of the Stroud offense.

Stroud crossed the line again minutes later, when a gut-busting run and a defense splitting reverse pass gave Holly Fisher-Webster her second try of the game.
