Night At The Library

By Heather SHARP READING Hour was held on Thursday, 29 September and children all across Australia dropped what they were doing and read for 60 uninterrupted minutes.

Getting in early on book reading was the Medowie Girls’ Guide who took their love of books to a whole new level.

Not connected to the official Reading Hour, the Guides organised a sleepover at the Library.

Ms Elizabeth Keeley, Medowie District Manager, told News Of The Area, “It came about because we were looking for a fun and different location to take our Guides.”

Together the idea of inspiring and creating a network which would help local women develop their businesses through networking, mentoring and education was embraced.

Leah Anderson, now President of the Tomaree Business Chamber and her colleague Carly Bush are the instigators of the initiative.

This week the group celebrated 10 years of Positive Networking for Women.

The event was full of glitz and glamour.

As members past and present dressed to impress for the Gala Ball which celebrated the Landmark.

Leah Anderson was the not for profits first president, Emily Perry now fills this role.

Medowie’s Kylie Smilie has also filled the role, together these women have created a movement which is strong and empowers local business women.

The event was held at Shoal Bay Country Club and was billed as sold out and successfully raised $2000

LAST week Police located debris from the helicopter which crashed off the Port Stephens coast (almost a month ago now).

Police were advised of an aircraft fading off the radar about 6.30pm on Friday 6 September 2019, before a search operation was commenced in the vicinity of Anna Bay. It has since been confirmed that five people were on board the aircraft at the time.

A multi-agency search operation has been conducted with officers from NSW Police Marine Area Command, Port Stephens-Hunter Police District, Australian Maritime Safety Authority, Australian Transport Safety Bureau, Australian Defence Force, Westpac Rescue Helicopter and NSW Marine Rescue.

Defence provided support through a Royal Australian Navy Coastal Minehunter vessel, HMAS Huon. This vessel provided underwater search and reconnaissance assistance to locate and identify the debris.

Over the past week, the search and recovery efforts have been focused on an area near Birubi Point.

A large area was searched with numerous amount of debris located.

Late last Wednesday (25 September 2019), Police divers were able to locate and retrieve some debris from the aircraft and human remains, about 30 metres below the surface.

Detectives from Marine Area Command are continuing investigations working closely with the Australian Transport Safety Bureau.

Police Reward PBL Winners

THIS week’s PBL winners received their awards from District Inspector for Port Stephens Hunter Police District, Mr Tony Townsend.

A well-known local identity, having played for the Newcastle Knights as a foundation player in 1988, he grew up in Dungog.

Mr Townsend has been a Police Officer for over 30 years and currently holds the portfolio of Aboriginal Engagement Officer.

News Of The Area

OYSTERS, Woodchopping, fishing and family friendly fun is what Karuah’s Timber and Oyster Festival promises to deliver on 21 October.

The woodchopping which is always popular kicks off at 10am.

Of course the festival celebrates the wonderful produce of the region with oysters fresh from the Karuah River being one of the star attractions.

The question on many locals minds, is, who will win the oyster eating competition in 2019?

Last year around 180 people put their hats in the ring to participate to see who could down a dozen oysters in the heats and for those

making it to the finals the competition doubles down with competitors downing two dozen oysters.

Cole Bros Oysters will be serving up a variety of oysters for festival goers including hot cheesy oysters, versions with bacon and of course oysters al a natural!

Festival goers will be pleased to hear that the oysters are currently good eating.

Tina Cole of Cole Bros Oysters told News Of The Area, “The oysters are good all year round, they’re quite fat now.

“We’ll be serving up barbequed oysters with cheese, as well as lovely fresh oysters at the festival.”

The Karuah Motor Yacht Club will once again hold a junior fishing competition on the day of the festival.

duplicate Nelson Bay Road THE Berejiklian Government has voted against its own election commitment to duplicate Nelson Bay Road, Kate Washinton told News Of The Area in a recent Press Release.

The State Member for Port Stephens said that the defeated general business motion (moved by Kate Washington), simply noted the Government’s commitment to allocate $275 million to duplicate

Nelson Bay Road between Williamtown and Bobs Farm, and called on the Government to honour its commitment.

“The uncontroversial motion was defeated 41 votes to 37 – with the Berejiklian Liberal Government refusing to confirm in Parliament their biggest election commitment in Port Stephens,” Ms Washington said.

“This was an

uncontroversial motion. It simply noted the details of the Government’s commitment, and called on the Government to deliver the project as promised.”

Ms Washington said, “The Government refused to support their own commitment, and they refused to say why.”

Trees planted blocking residents’ water views

PORT Stephens Council has, for the last five years planted some 1500 trees throughout the Shire to maintain and enhance corridors for koalas.

Currently they are linking Tanilba’s forested foreshore to Sunset Point with a new feeding and breeding strip of eucalypts as the old swamp mahogany trees are nearing their end of their life cycle.

The local Parks and Reserves committee has been notified as well as waterfront residents by a letterbox drop however an issue has come to surface with some residents.

A screen of trees, planted before the consultative process, had been completed which has angered some foreshore residents.

Council has agreed to relocate the trees and more plantings will take place between the new amenities block and the western end of the reserve.

This will establish a corridor over the long treeless strip and link it with an existing forest near the boat ramp.

Australias top Dirt Track Solo

AUSTRALIAS top Dirt Track Solo and Sidecar riders will be heading to the Barleigh Ranch Raceway North of Raymond Terrace on Saturday and Sunday 5-6 October for what is going to be one of the best Australian Championship meetings in a number of years.

Spokesperson Keith Davies said, “The top riders with be battling it out to be recognised on the prestigious ‘Duke for Edinburgh Trophy’, which is awarded to the winners of the solo and sidecar classes.”

The current rider list includes a ‘who’s who’ of Dirt Track racing headed by the current Australian Dirt Track Champion Michael Kirkness and the newly crowned Australian Long Track champion Jarrod Brook from Gympie, however they will have to be in top form as 2 of North Queensland’s best in Kayden Downing and Damion Koppe who both handle the Barleigh Ranch Track well, both making the long Journey from Townsville.

With all of the top local riders entered including Boyd Hollis, Sean Mclelland and Connor and Harry Ryan who have all being riding the Barleigh Ranch Track exceptionally well recently the racing is sure to be of a high standard.
