Reclaim the Run is back again

By Marian SAMPSON RECLAIM the run came back to Port Stephens for the fifth year.

The event is designed to highlight the need for women to be and feel safe in their homes and when exercising.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics Personal Safety Survey, 2012 found that 17% of Australian women and 4% of Australian men experienced sexual assault since the age of 15.

The same survey found that 15% of women had been sexually assaulted by a known person compared to 4% who were assaulted by a stranger.

Eyesight Saving Surgery For Port Teen FROM Page 16

Uveitis is an inflammation of the eye and many times a cause cannot be found but sometimes it is related to illness, injury, or an inflammatory or autoimmune issue.

Connor will have two surgeries over his four to six week stay at the Massachusetts

Eye Research and Surgery Institute in Boston.

Connor is currently working on a dairy farm for his Year 10 work experience and is enjoying his time there.

He had planned to go to the Hunter Trade College at the end of Year 10 but has advised against that due to the possibility of eye injuries.

Medowie Christian School held a fundraising lunchtime BBQ and activities on Friday 25 October to raise further

support his medical expenses and travel.

Williams Pet Produce owners Teresa and Paul have been a huge support to Connor and his family and organised a huge garage sale earlier this month with proceeds going towards helping with the costs of the surgeries.

Connor told News Of The Area, “I am very grateful to everyone for all they have done for me.”

THE Big Breakfast for Breast Cancer held at Fingal Bay has seen over 90 people turn out to help raise $7,635.40

for the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) to aid in their efforts of achieving zero deaths from the disease by 2030.

The breakfast was held

on the shores of Fingal Bay at Saltwater Restaurant on Sunday 27 October where attendees dressed in pink to celebrate the lives of those affected by the disease.

At the start of the day just over $3,000 was in the kitty but by the end of the morning, with a variety of fundraising games, raffles and activities, the total was well over the $7,000 mark.

Parkes, was blown away by how much the community got behind the event.

“We’ve been overwhelmed with the support and the turnout,” said Mr Hards.

“Breast cancer affects so many people we know and love in the area and it’s amazing to see the level of care in helping us raise this

money for a fantastic cause.”

The funds raised will be directly invested into world class research that has seen the NBCF save over 44,000 lives since its early beginnings in 1994.

Two charged over alleged touching of 14 year old girl TWO men have been charged over the alleged sexual touching of a teenage girl at Nelson Bay earlier this year.

In May 2019, detectives from the State Crime Command’s Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad commenced an investigation following reports a 14-year-old girl had been sexually touched by two men who were not known to her.

As part of their inquiries, a 31-year-old man was arrested at Port Macquarie on Tuesday 17 September 2019.

He was charged with three counts of intentionally sexually touch child between 10 and 16 years.

The man was refused bail and appeared at Port Macquarie Local Court on Wednesday 18 September 2019, where he was granted strict conditional bail to re-appear at the same court on Thursday 21 November 2019.

Following further investigations, a 36-year-old man was arrested by officers from Port Stephens-Hunter Police District about 3pm yesterday (Monday 28 October 2019).

He was charged with three

counts of intentionally sexually touch child between 10 and 16 years.

Police will allege in court that the men sexually touched the girl at a public toilet near Victoria Parade, Nelson Bay, in February 2019.

The Salt Ash man was refused bail to appear at Maitland Local Court this week (Tuesday 29 October 2019).

The Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad is comprised of detectives who are specially trained to investigate matters against children and adults, including sexual assault, serious physical abuse, and extreme cases of neglect.

By Julie McKIMM KINDLEBARK Oval is set to thrive after Medowie Little Athletics was successful in their Hunter Water ‘Love Water’ grant proposal.

The Club, one of nine successful community and civic organisations, will share the oneoff grant funding with Hunter Water who awarded the Medowie Club $10,000 toward the proposal.

The Club was also successful in gaining $11,000 of grant funding from NSW Office of Sport for the proposal.

The funding of $21,000 has allowed the club to install a 22,500L rainwater tank to capture water from the Clubhouse roof.

The project will see the most used section of the athletics track irrigated with pop up sprinklers, resulting in a healthier playing surface.

President of the Club, Mr Jason Wells, told News Of The Area, “The project will see half of our track being irrigated during the driest part of the year – without using a drop of town water.”

“The Club has worked closely with a local irrigation company to design and install the irrigation and rain harvesting system.”

“Total Eden at Raymond Terrace has designed an efficient system that will help provide a green space for the whole Medowie community.”

“We are proud to implement

this project that will promote water conservation and sustainability into the future for the Medowie community.”

MS Kelly De Waal from Hunter Water Corporation told News Of The Area, “To see the funds from the grant going to such good use and come to life is fantastic.”

Ms Kate Washington MP, Member for Port Stephens was also impressed with the Club’s initiative in“future proofing the oval for years to come.

Medowie Little Athletics has been operating for over 30 years and between September and March meets every Friday evening from 5.00pm at Kindlebark Oval.

Registration is currently open for all children aged between 4 and 17.

UNIT Commander of State Emergency Service Port Stephens, Mr David Douglas recently competed in the NSW Police and Emergency Services Games with great results.

Mr Douglas has been competing in such events since 2007.

This year, along with Senior Rescue Operator Mr Ken Douglas, they competed in the Clay Target and Skeet Shooting sections of the competition.

Mr David Douglas came away with a number of medals including a first place in A grade Trap Single Barrel, a second place in A grade Trap Point Score and a third in both the A grade Double Barrel Trap and A grade Skeet.

David told News Of The Area, “It was an honour to represent my Unit and the Service at the NSW Police & Emergency Services Games.”

“As I was preparing to go out to compete it dawned on me that I hadn’t competed in this discipline in over ten years.”

“It would be great if we could get more members involved in sports shooting, so as we could put together a team for the NSW Police & Emergency Services Games next year.”

David is looking forward to future events such as the Australasian Police and Emergency Service

  Friday 25 October, former  Commander Richard Osborne OAM was on the scene.

“We are therefore inactive when wild weather hits which is usually the time when we are most needed,” he added.

“Like the RFS we are all unpaid volunteers and to be targeted in this way is bad for morale,” he concluded.

Hay You Fundraiser “We’ve added another raffle on Saturday nights, and we’ve pledged to personally donate $2 for every scotch fillet or chicken schnitzel sold on a Saturday night to Rural Aid.”

FUNDRAISING is not new to the Bull ‘n’ Bush Hotel in Medowie, having donated every dollar made from pub raffles over the last five years and raising over $19 000 in total to charities and services such as Kaleidoscope, the Mark Hughes Foundation, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, Medowie Rural Fire Service, Breast Cancer Research, and also some locals that fall on hard times.

Last year they were proud to host the Bale Out The Drought fundraiser, managed

by Councillor Mr Chris Doohan, which raised over $80 000 for Buy A Bale.

With no end to the drought in sight, it was decided in October that they needed to make drought relief the main focus for fundraising.

While Port Stephens has only recently commenced Level 1 water restrictions, many rural communities have been in dire straits for a long time.

The latest drought map released by the Department of Primary Industries

shows that across NSW, only 0.4% is not in drought.

Other figures show that 0.2% is recovering, 45.6% is drought affected, 20.8% is in drought and an alarming 33% of the state is experiencing intense drought.

“What started as a support group for prostate cancer, with a driving service to get patients to and from Newcastle, has seen it grow into trying to assist almost all cancer patients,” said Mr Stanfield.

“There was so much demand for a transport service and we are lucky to have fantastic volunteers and support in our community to help try and fill that void.”

Funding for both groups come from local clubs, businesses, the Cancer

Council of NSW and patients themselves.

Foundation TPCSG Secretary, Richard Yeomans emphasised the importance of the drivers giving their time to help others in the area.

“We have around 40 drivers on the Tomaree peninsula which without we simply couldn’t provide this service,” said Mr Yeomans.

“Our group could get a call tomorrow about transport and we’d be able to assist them.”

Both Mr Stanfield and Mr Yeomans acknowledged the tremendous work put in by outgoing President, Iain Woodhill.

NOW in its third year, a Medowie Community initiative is sure to be another huge success this Halloween.

The idea started with a group of Medowie parents on a Facebook page wanting to create a safe way for their children to enjoy trick or treating on October 31.

Buckets of orange balloons are distributed throughout the community for residents to hang on their letterbox to indicate they are a Halloween friendly house and are happy to receive ghosts and ghouls knocking on their door.

A map is also compiled and distributed to parents on the Medowie Mums Facebook page so children can plan out their night.

The map also has the ability for households to specific the treats on offer at their house, orange for food treats, teal or green for non-food treats or purple for both food and nonfood treats, enabling those with allergies to enjoy the festivities also.

Fern Bay Future Concerns

AT the recent Port Stephens Council meeting, Councillors were requested to endorse the draft Fern Bay and North Stockton Strategy to be placed on Public Exhibition for a 28 day period.

The draft strategy was prepared by Council staff in consultation with Newcastle City Council to discuss and resolve traffic and transport, potential town centre sites and planning to support tourism in the area.

The strategy shows the potential for a town centre and shopping precinct in the North Stockton area, however there have been suggestions that this would be better served in the Fern Bay area.

Sally Johnston, Chairperson of the Fern Bay Fullerton Cover Progress Association, told News Of The Area, “There is a strong desire from the Fern Bay and Fullerton Cove community for a local supermarket and associated shops.

The Land Use Strategy looked at a number of potential locations, and appears to have given the green light for the commercially zoned land

at the front of the Seaside development to be rezoned back to residential.

Whilst the Stockton Centre site received the highest rating in the Strategy, there are so many unknowns with this site that there is no guarantee that, even if it was sold, that the eventual buyer would want to install a shopping centre.

Given the volumes of traffic travelling along Nelson Bay Road, the expansion of the airport precinct and the continued growth of Fern Bay and Fullerton Cove’s population, there should be sufficient demand, even if

we were to see two shopping centre precincts in the long term. “ Councillor Giacomo Arnott told News Of The Area, “The strategy adopted by Council provides for one town centre at a State Government owned facility, and we have no idea if or when the State will vacate it or if it will be available to Council if and when that happen, with this in mind an alternate site must be considered and included in the strategy.”

Locals are encouraged to make submissions on the strategy during the exhibition period.

Regional Grant Opportunity awarded to News Of The Area media LOCAL company Myall Coast Communications Pty Ltd which readers would know very well as News Of The Area (NOTA) has been awarded a Government Grant to support the sustainability of the local publishing activities, including news gathering, production and distribution.

The small company which produces Myall Coast News of the area and more recently Port Stephens News Of The Area, is one of 62 small and regional publishers across Australia to share in around $9 million of funding under the Federal Coalition Government’s Regional Grant Opportunity program to support local journalism.

Minister for Communications, Cyber Safety and the Arts, the Hon Paul Fletcher, said in the digital age the sector is facing profound and continuing change and the funding will help regional publishers invest for the future.

“The Federal Nationals in Government recognises the challenges facing regional publishers and local

newspapers as they reshape their business models to deal with the digital landscape and put themselves on more sustainable footings for the future,” Minister Fletcher said.

“These grants provide regional our publishers with the opportunity to invest in new technologies to support news gathering skills development and digital initiatives.”

Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie, congratulated News Of The Area and said the funding will provide a much welcomed boost in journalism and news gathering for the region.

“News Of The Area has demonstrated a solid business case to increase publishing activities for our region,” Dr Gillespie said.

The Regional Grant Opportunity program is overseen by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), which received 113 applications for the grants.

Of the 62 grant recipients, 25 will be funded in full and 37 will be part funded.

“Delivering relevant local community information from an unbiased source is still well regarded and by people - this probably will be the case for a long long time,” Mr Wright said.

Dear Mrs OC, I think the first question you need to ask yourself is whether you want to be a dedicated follower of fashion or a fashion setter. Do you want to follow the status quo like a mindless sheep, or would you prefer it if people look at you with a sense of wonderment?

The important thing is to own your look. I mean, Lady Gaga once wore a dress made of raw beef to the MTV awards, so I guess if you want to try something new you could slap on some veggie burgers and tofu and call it ‘sustainable statement wear’ Though I haven’t worn food as an outfit, during an extreme vague out, I did wear my pyjama top to Salamander shops and unfortunately ran into several people I knew. Now if it had been a slogan-free top, I probably would have managed to get away with it, but since it said ‘Bra Off. Pyjamas On’, all I could do was stand tall, push my chest out and throw caution to the wind in a sad, I’m free to do what I want, peri-menopausal kind of way.

There are many outfits that have been fashion statements that are now cringe-worthy, but they will undoubtedly come back in eventually – shoulder pads, taffeta, fingerless lace gloves, stirrup pants, fluoro shirts, happy pants, g-string leotards – and that was just the 80s.

As someone who works from home, my dress standards have dropped to an appalling level, but I like to think I am so far ahead of trend that one day others will catch up. If you notice people wandering around Port Stephens in three-quarter trackies and Birkenstocks, or fetching Hare Krishna saris, just remember who started it. As for summer, as long as you keep away from those god-awful ripped shorts that come half-way up the buttocks and look as though you’ve been attacked by a wild boar, you’ve made a wonderful head start.

School Stars Receive Award From Mayor

MAYOR Ryan Palmer was the special guest at this week’s Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) awards.

Mr Palmer has been the Port Stephens Mayor since 2017.

He is a local to the area and is now married raising his two young children in Port Stephens too.

Prior to contesting the 2017 election, Mr Palmer was President of the Tomaree Business Chamber.

He was also General Manager of the Greater Bank in Nelson Bay and Salamander Bay. For those who have seen him play tennis, it will come as no surprise that Mr Palmer was on the ATP Tennis professional circuit too.

Congratulations to this week’s award recipients Quade Cassar, Grahamstown Public School: For spending time cleaning up rubbish after the PBL launch at Boomerang Park.

This couldn’t be more true for one local tradie who manages to fit surfing into his busy life.

At the 2019 Tradies Surfmasters those normally on the tools spent a day carving it up.

Fern Bay’s 3 - Michael Hoysted was placed 3rd in his category of over 50’s men in the event which took place at Cronulla.

Hoysted had a successful day at the picturesque location on two-foot waves in balmy 28-degree weather.

Newcastle’s Paul Snow from Merewether also did well taking out the Over-35 and Over-40 Men’s division.

The Surfers Rescue 24/7 course provides crucial training to assist in an ocean emergency situation and ultimately save a life.

The course was sparked by a need to cover the gap between patrolled beaches and remote beaches in an effort to reduce deaths from drowning in NSW. Port Stephens Toyota are long term and generous supporters of many community events in and around Port Stephens and Kim Burton owner of Port Stephens Toyota is continuing his generous contribution to professional surfing and WSL events in the Newcastle and Bay area.

Local competitor and Bay Area Boardriders member Jasmine Sampson has been offered a wildcard into the Women’s QS6000 event by Surfing NSW to fly the flag for Port Stephens.

Over the duration of the event window, Surfing NSW is slated to host a variety of different activations including functions, Surfers Rescue 24/7 courses, Indigenous smoking ceremony, and Kaos Surf Grom Kaddies who will work as board caddies for the WSL QS6,000 competitors.
