FOR the hearing impaired the use of PPE in medical and community settings causes a block to communication as they make lip reading impossible while potentially muffling sounds.

Local Simone Jolly RN is an Audiologist practising at Salamander Bay who is passionate about improving

communication.

Using a facemask with a clear plastic window makes it possible for those who lip read to be able to communicate in healthcare and community settings.

Simone Jolly told News Of The Area, “The communicatorstyle face masks are hard to buy in Australia, but there are some places online selling versions of them.“

person what their preferred method of communication would be - a lot of hearing impaired people are used to letting people know their communication needs; make sure you get the person’s attention before speaking; use visual cues; speak slowly and louder than normal (but don’t shout as this distorts the sound); use writing, text or a transcription App to enable the person to read the message (an example of a transcription App is Google Transcribe or for Live Transcribe).

It is also important to be patient and allow the person to ask for repetitions if needed, and find a different way of repeating information if they miss it the first time.

We should remember that background noise can make it harder to hear and if it is safe use a communicator style face mask or face shield.

For those who are hearing impaired it is important to let people know about your hearing loss and to consider other methods of communication.

Simone implores people to wear their hearing aids if they have them as this will they help you hear but they also let others know that you have a hearing impairment.

“Get your hearing aids checked by your hearing care provider if you are having difficulty – ask whether there are other devices such as microphones that can be used in conjunction with your hearing aids that might help you hear over distance, and don’t be afraid to ask people to repeat something if you didn’t hear it” she said.

Simone reminds us all to be kind to ourselves and each other in these challenging times.

Tourism operators such as Moonshadow-TQC Cruises and Port Stephens 4WD Tours have ceased trading to help stem the flow of visitors to the region, as the NSW Government directive to cancel all non-essential travel goes unnoticed.

It comes as a Sydney traveller was the confirmed source of infection for the CoronaVirus outbreak in the area.

‘BUY nothing’ sounds too good to be true, but it isn’t.

Local Jacqui Purcell is involved in the movement and is working on growing Buy Nothing groups locally.

The Seaham/Raymond Terrace/Clarence Town/ Paterson group already has 130 plus members who are all participating in the movement and benefiting in many different ways.

Jacqui Purcell told News Of The Area, “The ethos is all about making a gift without any expectation of return

payment.”

For those receiving the gift there is no feeling of guilt or owing the gifter for the item given.

Jacqui originally got involved in this movement as a part of a minimal waste journey and she is currently involved in creating six groups in the Hunter region.

“All groups are more successful with more members,” she said.

Instead of going out and buying new things she believes in reusing items that are sitting dormant somewhere in the community.

Someone probably has what you need that they no longer use or want.

With finite world resources available Jacqui believes that we need to be smarter about how we use what we have and in reducing consumerism we are helping the planet.

Nelson Bay Next initiatives Council Cancels Meeting No Business THE local business community joined Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer recently at a COVID safe event to get an update on Nelson Bay Next initiatives and the impact on the local economy.

One of the key initiatives, the Nelson Bay Public Domain Plan, was revealed in February 2018 when community consultation commenced to achieve the community’s vision for Nelson Bay over the next 20 years.

Port Stephens Mayor Palmer said it’s an exciting time for Nelson Bay with work already underway to prioritise people, create a greener town centre and provide more spaces for the community to enjoy.

“Since the Public Domain Plan works commenced, we’ve already seen a number of projects and improvements in infrastructure to link the foreshore and town centre together including Apex Park, Yacaaba Street and soon to be new amenities blocks,” Mayor Palmer said.

“The Yacaaba Street project was pushed for by the community and now we are seeing the clear benefit this has had on local businesses providing a direct link to the Nelson Bay town centre.

“The Smart Parking Scheme was endorsed by Council on 12 May this year after in-depth community consultation to source a solution to increased parking demands in the area

and improve traffic flow.

“Upgrades to existing parking and additional spaces will also be introduced as well as a free parking scheme for all Port Stephens residents, ratepayers and employees of Nelson Bay CBD businesses.

“It’s not just about a charging for parking or removing meters — they’ll still be there and you can still pay by cash if you want. It’s about giving extra parking spaces, making it easier to find a park, creating more attractions and events bringing people to the Nelson Bay CBD and reinvesting the revenue.

“Funds collected from smart parking will be reinvested into Nelson Bay to fund improvements to the public domain, landscaping, increased car parking and place activation.

“I know some may feel unsure about these changes but as I’ve said before if we don’t take a risk there will be no reward. The reward for Nelson Bay are the upgrades and activation — this is a vehicle to move us forward from where we are today,” he said.

The smart parking infrastructure program is expected to be installed towards the end of 2020.

CITING no business to transact Port Stephens Council has cancelled its Ordinary Council Meeting planned for this month.

At least one councillor is not happy.

Councillor Giacomo Arnott told News Of The Area, “I’m really disappointed that Council has cancelled this meeting, claiming that there is “no business to transact”.

He says that it is simply not true.

“I’ve submitted a motion for this meeting, for Council to write to the NSW Government asking why they haven’t implemented a speed reduction along Tomago Rd. “Since that motion was submitted, there was another serious car crash along this section of road.”

He believes that there couldn’t be anything more important.

“Then there’s one of the most dangerous roads in the state, The Bucketts Way, that is in line for a NSW Government upgrade.

“My motion asks for funding to be accelerated.”

Councillor Arnott has expressed that this is extremely important for road safety.

“And finally, the Nelson Bay business community has been seething in its reaction to the rushed implementation of smart parking in the area.

“My motion called for a delay to the roll-out to enable consultation.”

“There is always business to transact, and it’s not good enough that we are being paid to work, but someone is deciding they don’t want to. Councillors need to do their jobs,” said Councillor Arnott.

The cancelled meeting will see these matters postponed for weeks.

community update virus LIKE many parts of regional NSW, Port Stephens had been relatively COVID-19 free until this past week.

With new cases reported in our community, it is now more important than ever that we take responsibility to protect ourselves, our families and our region from further transmission.

The next few weeks are crucial for Port Stephens and I encourage us all to do the right thing — follow the NSW public health orders, get tested and stay safe.

I know this is a difficult time for our community and for our local businesses who have already been hit hard this year and rely on tourism. We need to strike a delicate balance between supporting our struggling businesses and protecting our local community from this virus.

Some within our community have raised concerned around travel between Sydney and Port Stephens. While I understand these concerns, our close proximity means there are strong ties between our regions and travel can often be unavoidable.

But I do urge anyone thinking of coming to Port Stephens to please follow the public health order and listen to government advice to help keep our community safe.

If you believe you may have come into contact with a confirmed case or have even the slightest of symptoms, please get tested and stay home. This is the only way we can ensure the safety and health of our community.

I know it has been an extremely tough year for us all but we need to work together to help stop the spread of this virus.

Community Organisations Benefit

COUNCILLORS get a say in how things are run around the Port, they also get $2000 to share among community groups or to address issues which are important to them.

Councillor Arnott used his $2000 to assist groups that may otherwise not have attracted funding.

He told News Of The Area, “I provided $1500 to local community groups at the council meeting.

“The recipients included the Fern Bay Bayway Village Men’s Shed which received $250, Voices of Wallalong and Woodville which received $250, the Woodville School of Arts which received $250, the Raymond Terrace Community Preschool which received $250, and Port Stephens Family and Neighbourhood Services which received $500.”

Each of these organisations provides a valuable contribution to the community.

Voices of Wallalong and

Woodville are providing a voice on important community issues in their region including the Brandy Hill region where the group is working hard to save koala habitat.

Men’s Sheds are well known for creating positive mental health as

AT a very different changeover event the Rotary Club Of Salamander Bay handed its reins for the year to incoming President Peter North.

The breakfast was attended also by Area Governor Christine Walmsley, President Rotary Nelson Bay Liz Friend and Port Stephens Mayor, Ryan Palmer.

Peter North told News Of The Area, “Rotary International President Holger Knaak has set a fitting presidential theme for this year, known as Rotary Opens Opportunities.”

Peter acknowledges that COVID-19 has changed the way we live and how the club will move forward.

The members are working to think outside the square to allow them to continue to assist local charities.

As President Peter is delighted to have a firm date from Council for the long awaited

beautification of the entry to the Bay Roundabout for October.

The club donated over $18,500 to various charities and organisations including the Kula Spirit, developing the Rotary Solar cases and the local RFS units that battled the 2019/2020 bush fires both locally and across the fire fronts.

Rotary like every other community service organisation will face new challenges and our community will continue to benefit from the careful planned support of clubs like the Rotary Club of Salamander Bay into the future.

Port COVID-19 Spike last week

By Marian SAMPSON THERE is no doubt that the spectre of CORONA Virus is shadowing our community with a person being testing positive having spent a significant amount of time at Salamander Bay Shopping Centre last week.

The 60 year old is now in home isolation.

There have also been confirmed positive test within Tomaree Public School community, which shares spaces with Tomaree High School.

As well as at an Anna Bay kindergarten. This has prompted calls for all people who attended the centre on July 15 to get tested.

Hunter New England Health’s Dr David Durrheim spoke extensively with News Of The Area on Wednesday about COVID-19, he said, “Older people are certainly more vulnerable to COVID-19.

“We all need to make sure that we take meticulous care, wearing a mask does not replace 1.5 metre distancing from others, hand hygiene, not

shaking hands and not touching things.”

While elderly are vulnerable, so too are others with underlying conditions, the young are not immune to this virus.

“If we are entering crowded places and we are concerned that we aren’t going to be able to social distance, masks add additional protection.”

Dr Durrheim also stressed the importance of a mask being correctly fitted and the need for good hygiene throughout wearing the mask and after removing the mask, we must also engage in thorough hand washing, as any germs that the mask has protected us from will be on the surface of the mask.

Dr Durrheim also asked that residents of Port Stephens not to travel to Sydney unless it is for essential travel.

He asks that we all “Take precautions as none of us want to be the reason the virus is reintroduced to the community.”

At the time of the interview Dr Durrhiem stated that Port Stephens is not a hot spot,

however increased testing is now available and he stressed the importance that for those needing a test, isolation is a part of the process.

The process, and an area identified as a weak link in the second wave that Victoria is experiencing, is a failure of those with symptoms or who have potentially being exposed failing to isolate prior to testing and to isolate until you receive your results.

It is not appropriate to be shopping or even outside exercising if you are in need of a test or waiting for test results – in these circumstances you need to be isolating at home.

To get tested it is ideal to get a referral from your GP first or you can book into the pop-up clinic at Tomaree Community Hospital by calling 4964 7497.

“Even the slightest of Symptoms, get tested, and selfisolate.

“Essential workers at our

local shops and medical centres are doing their absolute best to follow guidelines and take precautions.

“We have heard stories of staff being abused, and this is just not right. We are all in this together. Be kind, Be safe and take care of each other,” she said.

Community concern is rife – now is the time to engage in anti-COVID-19 protocols, strict social distancing, use the App and use positive hand hygiene, avoid crowded places, if you are vulnerable, isolate as much as possible.

I will confess that I went on a search after your conundrum to see if I could find the offending footage and I quickly came across the video of this woman ranting at the poor Bunnings staff. I mean don't they have enough to deal with with customers who can't remember the shade of white they want to paint their coffee table or who can't find their husband because he said he was going to aisle 37 and he's not there, without having to deal with some middleclass legal studies dropout pain-in-the-neck with a patronising chai-latte-laced-withProzac tone who suggests she can have the poor Bunnings staff member 'personally sued' for merely trying to follow their Covidsafe protocol?

Personally sued? Is this woman insane? Actually, I think therein lies the answer. The coronavirus has unearthed a whole lot of people who have way too much time on their hands and who spend countless hours falling down conspiracy theory rabbit holes only to climb out and start ranting at service and healthcare workers who are just trying to do their job.

Seriously, how is wearing a mask a breach of human rights? We are not being asked to shrink wrap our bodies. We are not being asked to wear a full suit of armour. And we most certainly aren't being asked to spend hours at a time sweating in full PPE gear unless we are one of the healthcare workers who deal with those poor individuals who have become ill. We are simply being asked to consider the health and safety of others so more people don't get sick and we can get back to some semblance of normality.

I tell you, June, I think many of us have lost a bit of faith in humanity lately and people like this woman aren't doing much to remedy that. I wish both you and your child health and happiness.

FOR most of us, taking a paddle down the Amazon as part of a day’s work is inconceivable, but not for Medowie based inventor John Worthington.

John has developed and is delivering a series of devices designed to be placed in the remotest areas capturing local data and transmitting that data via satellite to secure networks.

The devices can perform amazing tasks.

The Remote Access “Water Beetle” is solar powered and can provide real time water quality data anywhere in the world.

John Worthington of Real Access told News Of The Area, “The water beetle is a self-righting solar powered module which can be used in fresh or salt water or ocean

environments.”

“One of the most exciting devices that we created for use in the Amazon connects villages.”

Housed in a humble watertight 44 gallon drum the RAD44 is a totally portable communications hub that is easily transported and can be placed either permanently or temporarily.

The RAD44 has a military grade PC onboard, with flexible amorphous solar panels, and extreme weatherproof interfaces.

The Company also has a hardware “Virtual Private Network” (VPN) and secure internet solutions which are being used internationally.

The centrepiece is the Real Access secure collaboration platform which is able to connect people and networks anywhere in the world in a completely secure

Bringing “the movies to life”, information can be flicked across screens to other authorised users anywhere in the world.

“Most exciting has been the company’s ability to work

with Defence and Government agencies to create a simple but completely secure flow of information, accessed in real time from any securely linked computer using the VPN,” said Worthington.

This technology can take a large scale map, with people

moving markers (reminiscent of WW2 moves) onto a 21st century digital platform which is flexible but secure.

It is a world first, and a game changer in many different scenarios.

This technology, developed in Medowie could

allow emergency services personnel to be monitored securely and in real time, giving them levels of protection, unavailable until now.

Real Access technology can be applied across industries from environmental scientists monitoring water quality in our rivers, potentially giving data prior to events such as fish kills, to monitoring body cameras of police, military and emergency services personnel and to providing access to specialist medical services and education to the most remote communities in the world through the RAD44.

Medowie and the new hub at Williamtown are already leading the world with great STEM solutions while providing a lifestyle which many in the major cities would envy.

After all, this technology was developed across the road from a horse paddock, but then Real Access delivers a solution that enables anyone from anywhere to be connected.

Herbicide spraying MidCoast Council will be carrying out a range of herbicide spraying activities in various waterways, open drains, and retention ponds; on roadsides and reserves; and on sporting fields, parks, pools surrounds, cemeteries and Council building surrounds within the entire MidCoast Local Government area during the months August, September and October 2020.

These activities will be targeting general vegetation, grasses, reeds, bindii, broadleaf, annual, perennial and environmental weeds and each program is subject to weather conditions. Only qualified operators will be undertaking works.

WITH a confirmed case of CoronaVirus linked to the Tomaree Public School and the Nelson Bay Junior Marlins AFL Club, local junior sport has been put on the backburner for now.

The Nelson Bay Junior Rugby Union Club (NBJRC) has postponed all matches for their teams in the Hunter Junior Rugby Union (HJRU) for 14 days as efforts continue to ensure that there is no community transmission of COVID-19.

In a statement President Dion Cooper said that the move was to not only ensure the safety of the rugby community, but also the wider Port Stephens and Hunter regions.

“NBJRC will postpone any participation in the HJRU competition for 14 days,” said Mr Cooper.

“Regardless of the scale of this outbreak, it’s the potential that forms the risk.
