IN the early morning’s halflight Australians from around the country stood in solidarity, maintaining social distancing while commemorating the Service of our ANZACS. This year it was not the Marches, and the Dawn Services with our service men and women marching proudly and crowds cheering them on.

Rather our community came forth, young and old, at dawn and stood to attention in our driveways and on our balconies.

The eerie sounds of lone musicians playing the Last Post on all manner of instruments from brass to bagpipes could be heard across the region.

“This will make a massive difference to the sanctuary and will save koalas’ lives,”he said.

“Even an injured koala will try to get up a tree and the sooner we can rescue them and perform triage the better their life expectancy.”

Injured or sick koalas are often difficult to persuade

down from their trees for help. Ron recounts trying to entice a koala down by banging on the tree with sticks above the animal.

Ron said, “It is very stressful for the animal but our only option, but now we can go silently up a tree to the koala and pluck them to safety. The machine will also be used to collect goodquality food leaves from the tops of trees.”

John King from Nifty lives in Nelson Bay and as a recipient of a koala ‘adoption’ had the idea a few

months ago.

“I was shocked at how much our local wildlife suffers injury and sickness and we wanted to help in some way. Port Stephens Koalas do an invaluable job looking after the area’s endangered population and although our area escaped being hit by the recent fires they take care of injured koalas from harder fireravaged areas,” Mr King said.

Many of these veterans will miss their annual March, the time to talk to their mates, and of course their annual two up games.

Our current Service men and women and their families also face many challenges.

Army Major David Rodley was on his driveway at 6am. In his Service career he and his family have moved 15 times including two postings to the US, one to Antarctica early in his marriage, and he has also served in Kuwait and Afghanistan.

Major David Rodley told News Of The Area,

“We think Port Stephens will be our “forever” home, however this could change if we get another overseas posting.”

Kerri Rodley, his wife said, “Each time he has been deployed we have met up at “half time” once in Turkey where we visited Gallipoli, the second time was Greece.”

Raymond Terrace Veteran Bill Garrett told News Of The Area, “ Seeing everyone commemorate ANZAC Day today just proves that the spirit of ANZAC lives on.”

Bill signed up as an apprentice and served 25 years in the RAAF “Some of

the best years of his life”.

A Veteran himself, Shadow Minister for Veterans, Greg Warren has shared a powerful message “While you sit there locked away in the comfort of your home, think about how lucky you are to have a roof, not bullets, over your head.

“When you lie in the comfort of your warm bed, remember those brave Australians who took their last breath lying cold, bloodied and alone on the battlefields.

“It is our responsibility to remember them and to continue to tell the stories of the ANZACs for generations to come,” he said. Lest We Forget.

New Park Facilities Won’t Be Used Until After Lockdown

GEORGE Reserve is a District Park on the Tomaree Peninsula, one that normally sees a huge number of visitors during the holidays and daily from locals accessing the beach.

We will have to wait until the lockdown is lifted or eased to use the great new seating area.

In 2018 the Rotary Club of Salamander Bay was the recipients of the 2018 Community Building Partnership Grant, at the time Ina George was the Club's President.

The funds were used on the District Park which was sadly in need of an upgrade. The works from the Grant project are now complete with

the removal of some very old seating, the placement of a large concrete pad and the

installation of four sets of tables and chairs and an under-cover seating.

There is more to come at the Park with new play equipment high on the agenda for the Park.

Ina George, Past President of the Rotary Club of Salamander Bay, told News Of The Area, “We’d like to see some good playground equipment for children at the Reserve.”

The Rotary Club has also successfully secured $10,000 in funding through Meryl Swanson’s office, for playground equipment and Council has also committed a substantial amount towards this next stage of work.

Council had scheduled for the barbeque and toilet block to be replaced with works originally planned for July this

year, however this schedule may alter due to the current COVID-19 situation.

Ina George has a family connection to George Reserve and is keen to see it as a District Park that locals can be proud of and enjoy using the space.

George Reserve is just one of the foreshore Parks which is subject to foreshore erosion and there are hopes that foreshore stabilisation can be achieved.

The granted funds of $35,500 have created an investment in the future enjoyment of the Park for residents and visitors alike.

The Park is seeing plenty of social distancing use as locals access the beach for exercise, with walking, sailing and kayaking high on the agenda of many locals during lockdown.

New Community infrastructure for Port PALMER: “I know how much our locals value these amenities and the ability to keep fit and healthy” PARLIAMENTARY Secretary for the Hunter Catherine Cusack has announced $694,881 in successful grant applications from the Stronger Country Communities Fund to benefit community infrastructure and youth-related projects in Port Stephens.

Ms Cusack congratulated Port Stephens Council who secured $502,618 towards construction of their $2.6M Tomaree Sport Complex Multi-purpose facility, along with Port Stephens Police Citizens Youth Club which will get a boost to youth services with $192,263 in funding.

“The new multi-purpose building, to be built at the Tomaree Sports Complex, will host loca l sporting clubs, youth services and events.

It will include a meeting room, office space, all-access amenities, new change rooms, a canteen, a referee’s room, a first aid room, as well as additional storage spaces,” said Ms Cusack.

PCYC will use their funding to introduce ‘Fit for Work/ Fit for Life’ - a program which aims to support at-risk youth who may be disengaged from education or employment by providing positive opportunities that educate, inspire and empower.

“Fit for Work/Fit for Life is a resilience and capacity building program that integrates two approaches

to support the NSW Police Commissioner’s RISEUP Youth Strategy,” said Ms Cusack.

“In partnership with Police Officers from NSW Youth and Crime Prevention Command, the program offers real-life skills development and creates employment readiness through preemployment training, vocational qualifications, structured work experience and mentoring.”

Phillip Ross, Club Manager from PCYC Port Stephens said the funding would make a huge difference to youth in the area.

“Fit for Work/Fit for Life is an 18 month program that will provide accredited employment ready programs to young people across the Nelson Bay and Raymond Terrace areas,” said Mr Ross.

“PCYC and NSW Police will forge partnership opportunities to allow young people to work alongside local trades within the construction and hospitality industries as part of the RISEUP strategy.”

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer welcomed the funding and thanked the NSW Government for continuing to support Port Stephens.

“This is fantastic news for the Port Stephens community — I know how much our locals value these amenities and the ability to keep fit and healthy,” said Cr Palmer.

applications for the Tomaree Sports Complex and the PCYC Fit for Life/Fit for Work program will allow our community to continue utilising these facilities for many years to come.”

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW John Barilaro said $100 million was being distributed across regional NSW, with regional communities set to benefit from more than 550 new projects.

To date, rounds one and two of the program have funded more than 1,000 projects.

“Locals across regional NSW are seeing the benefits of rounds one and two of the Fund, with projects making a big difference to everyday life, from new playgrounds loved by kids to light towers illuminating sporting fields,” Mr Barilaro said.

“We are funding grassroots projects that make a real difference to each community, and we know how important it is to support our regional towns with new infrastructure and programs.”

The $400 million Stronger Country Communities Fund is part of the NSW Government’s $1.7 billion Regional Growth Fund, which is being invested in local programs and infrastructure that improve the lives of people living in regional NSW.

I HOPE you all had a relaxing Easter with your families. It was very different for my family, staying home and not visiting our extended family, but it’s the safest thing we can do during the COVID-19 pandemic.

I know it’s been tough on everyone — with many people not being able to work, see their loved ones, or do the things they enjoy.

To help make life easier during these challenging times, I announced a COVID-19 Recovery Response with a list of measures to see us all through the response, recovery and restart of our Port Stephens economy.

I have listened to many of you and understand your frustration around suspending green waste drop off days.

That’s why we’re investigating allowing one extra green waste kerbside collection between now and 30 June 2021.

Thanks to your efforts to uphold social distancing, especially over Easter, we’re working with Emergency Services to investigate reopening our boat ramps to local residents from 27 April 2020.

The response package also called on the State and Federal Governments to assist local government in providing essential services during the pandemic.

While some projects may have to be slightly scaled back or deferred, Port Stephens is continuing to move ahead with works on the Nelson Bay Road and Lemon Tree Passage Road roundabout, Anna Bay pathway and Robinson Reserve.

As I have mentioned before, our community spirit here is second to none.

We need to stay connected and stay strong now more than ever — be it through social media or other digital channels.

You have your own beach? That is quite a claim. A beach in Anna Bay that we haven't heard of? Well, none of us, that is, except for the 15 strangers who turned up unannounced and ruined your downward dog and salute to the sun.

How rude. Now, because you hadn't seen these people before, you seem to be indicating that they were tourists. But how, pray tell, does one identify a tourist? I mean they don't have a hat that says TOURIST on it, and yet in several local social media groups, I have noticed locals calling out these people and telling them to go back home.

The problem is, Mrs PN, maybe they are home and maybe they are looking at you as though you are the one who shouldn't be there. This happened to a friend of mine recently. She has a caravan and she had to get it registered. After that, she decided that instead of going home and making a second trip out, she would do her essential grocery shopping. Well, all hell broke loose. She was accused, several times, of coming up and infecting the area with her COVID-19 germs and buying up all the essential toilet paper and flour and Dettol (don't drink it, Mrs PN, whatever the POTUS throws around as a potential cure, just don't).

So, what did she do? She tried to very diplomatically explain the whole registration process, but if fell on deaf ears because people who falsely accuse others generally don't have the ability to listen. Another person then told her to go home. She was home, but that was beside the point for our local interrogators. Look, we don't want people doing the wrong thing, but I just don't think now is the time to start judging or making citizens arrests. No one knows any one else's personal circumstances. Maybe the family members were driving each other crazy and they just had to get some fresh air.

Given the numbers, maybe it was a wedding and a funeral. It is hard to tell what anything is these days.

As long as you are happy in the knowledge that you are doing the right thing, and you are keeping safe and well, then I don't think there's much more that you can do, except maybe lower that haughty 'my beach' tone.

MEDOWIE is home to some new and interesting artworks.

In fact the township has been bombed with yarn.

Yarn-bombing is a stealth operation in Medowie and you won’t see images of this artist

with her works which are installed in the public realm, but you can’t possibly miss the bright colourful and fun installations.

There are currently four installations in Medowie but locals can expect to see more.

Medowie’s resident yarn-bomber Kyla Story

told News Of The Area, “The works I have installed currently are with the permission of Port Stephens Council.”

She encourages anyone who wishes to engage in public art to seek Council permission.

Kyla believes that public art is an important part of our community.

Artworks help people to connect and start

conversations.

Kyla has been involved in installations and public art for over 10 years, recently having moved to Medowie. Kyla’s works are new to our community but she has previously had work sponsored in Ipswich, in Queensland and has won Awards for her textile art at the Alice Springs Beanie Festival and the Warwick Jazz and Jumpers Festival.

Kyla invites locals that would like to contribute to the public art process to get in touch with her via email at bristledesign@gmail. com Kyla’s yarn-bombing installations are a wonderful, cheerful and colourful addition to the public art in Port Stephens which features sculptures, murals, mosaics and more.

If you’ve been impacted financially, it would be wise to consider your situation, but if you’ve already started, then living in a building site long-term can be challenging to say the least – especially if it’s your bathroom or kitchen that’s in ruin. If this is the case, perhaps reassess your priorities, check your budget and undertake the most important projects, do some of the work, like painting, yourself and put the rest on hold.

Think with your head, not your heart and you’ll make the right decision.

Not Bunkering Down LIKE last week’s story about Nelson Bay Golf Club; Tanilba Golf Club are certainly not bunkering down to weather the COVID–19 storm.

The Club is up and running but has strict rules to comply with to minimise personal contact; So seriously do they take their responsibility, that those who break the strict protocol will be confronted by the police and disqualified

from the course.

Only residents of Port Stephens will be allowed to play. Proof of residence will be needed.

Payment of green fees are via Pay wave or Eftpos. Cash is

unacceptable.

Scorecards are only to be marked by the player, signed and put in a box at the pro shop. The flagstick is not to be touched.

SPORT Hole depths will be shallow to make ball removal easier. Rakes have been removed from bunkers and the practice green has been closed. Sand buckets have been removed.

The Club board of directors apologises for any inconvenience and assures members and visitors that these measures will only be in place until the public health authorities deem that the COVID–19 threat no longer exists.

Rentals Flood Property Market

AS the COVID-19 pandemic continues to place pressure on households and businesses in the Port Stephens region the restrictions on travel and shortstay accommodation has seen the rental market flooded with new listings.

According to Trent Wilshire, an Economist with the Domain Group, the effects of the CoronaVirus are flowing through to the real estate sector as demand for holiday stays drops.

“The movement of properties from the short-term or tourist market onto the longterm rental market is a reason why rental listings have risen over the past few weeks,” said Mr Wilshire.

“There has been a significant increase in rental listings in the Port Stephens region.

the past four weeks, which is 66 percent higher than the comparable period one year ago.”

Mr Wilshire says that it’s also sellers looking to hold onto their assets through economic uncertainty.

“Another factor driving more rental supply is vendors withdrawing properties from sale and instead renting them

out,” he said.

“Other factors having a direct impact is the lower demand for rental properties as people who have lost jobs and income are trying to save money, so they are moving back in with parents, moving in with friends and dissolving sharehouses.”

As the fallout from the health and economic crisis continues it’s expected that the surge in availability will not only drive rents down but also property prices as a whole.

“For the rental market in the short-term we’re likely to see higher vacancy rates and more discounting on asking rents which we’re already seeing signs of,” said Mr Wilshire.

“Property prices are likely to decline in coming months and property sales are likely to fall significantly.”

All these factors are expected to severely impact the construction industry as well as the demand for new housing developments and commercial real estate bottoms out across Australia.

Stretton says his cohort and himself are beyond thankful that they can still grab their boards and hit the foam zone.

“I just got to say thankyou to Port Stephens Council and our governing bodies for allowing us to continue to surf,” he said.

“I’m not sure what we’d all do if we couldn’t!”

WITH surfing contests canned in Australia until at least October due to the COVID-19 pandemic, local Port Stephens waxheads have been busy in the salt staying sharp in anticipation for their restart.

Competitive surfer and local core-lord Joshua Stretton has been using the downtime out of the competitors rashie to work on his air and rail game by getting amongst the line-up as much as possible.

“I’ve been training a fair bit to pass the time and maintain my fitness so I’m ready to go when everything starts back up again,” said Stretton.

“I’ve been mainly surfing Birubi and One Mile, the waves have been cooking!”
