Local Mother Marnie Coates has two children at Medowie Primary, and says that she doesn’t want to force her kids to travel over two hours a day when a local option could be available.

“The kids already do a long day now and potentially they’ve got an hour or more travelling each way to get to school,” said Mrs Coates.

“It doesn’t leave time for them to get home, to do extracurricular activities or get their homework done, or just have family time.

“Medowie’s population is going through a boom, we need this High School now.”

Probus Club planning again

MEMBERS of The Medowie Probus Club are happy to be

able to resume normal activities starting with the Club meeting on 15 July 2020 which will be held at the Medowie Community

Centre at 10.00 am.

The clubs meetings and activities were cancelled from late March 2020 due

to COVID-19 and the closure of the Council’s Community Centres.

Tilligerry Apiarists are looking forward to a promising season for honey

AUSTRALIA is one of the few countries in the world which doesn’t harbour the varroa mite which destroys bee colonies.

That’s why countless millions of our healthy bees are exported to North America each year to assist in crop pollination.

Tilligerry is an ideal foraging area for bees with a wide variety of flora from which they

collect nectar.

Our Golf Club clover gives us a clear honey whilst the paperbarks’ nectar produces a deep, dark, full flavoured variety.

Local apiarists are looking forward to a promising season after a bushfire took out so much of the flora a year or so ago.

This spring the bush will once again bloom and the bees will have something of a

well earned smorgasboard to browse on.

For some five years now Bert and Dorathea Willey have been producing honey at Tanilba Bay. They moved from acreage in the Riverina and brought their bees with them.

Their fresh local honey is sold at the Tilligerry Habitat where Dorathea is a volunteer worker.

CT Scanner Arrives at Port

FOR some locals it is a long awaited arrival.

This week a CT machine arrived at Tomaree Community Hospital.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Catherine Cusack said, “For the first time, patients will soon be able to have a CT scan on site where they are being treated, right here on the Tomaree Peninsula.”

Currently, all patients need to be transferred offsite to other Hunter New England Health facilities in Newcastle, or other private service providers, to have their CT scan.

“CT scans are vital for diagnosing medical conditions such as strokes, brain bleeds, and traumatic abdominal soft tissue injuries.

“Completion of the HealthOne

upgrade at Tomaree Community Hospital has meant that there are now dedicated spaces for both the new CT, and X-ray machines in the new imaging area.

“From 1 July this year, both x-ray and CT will operate at Tomaree Community Hospital and Health Centre as public-run services.

“A new full-time radiographer will also be employed to support the new service,” she said.

The CT Scanner for Tomaree is vitally important for many reasons one of which is the fast diagnosis of strokes.

Given that we live in the oldest community in the state fast diagnosis of stroke is vital for positive outcomes.

Kelly told News Of The Area, “Stroke Foundation New South Wales State Manager Rhian Paton-Kelly said the CT scanner was a great step forward in providing access to timely diagnosis and treatment for stroke patients.

“Stroke is always a time-critical medical emergency.

“When a stroke strikes, it kills more than 1.9 million brain cells each minute, but quick diagnosis and treatment can stop this damage.”

“The quicker someone gets to hospital for stroke treatment, the better chance they have of a good recovery.”

“I urge everyone to learn and remember the F.A.S.T. (Face. Arms.

Speech. Time.) signs of stroke and to call triple zero (000) at the first sign of stroke. It could save a life,”

she said.

The F.A.S.T. test involves asking these simple questions: Face – Check their face. Has their mouth drooped?

Arms – Can they lift both arms?

Speech – Is their speech slurred?

Do they understand you?

Time – Time is critical. If you see any of these signs, call triple zero (000) straight away.

The investment in delivering the CT scanning services at Tomaree Community Hospital will provide

acutely and chronically ill patients of the Tomaree community, and the large number of seasonal visitors, access to local, state of the art imaging technology.

Images will be electronically available in the patient’s medical record, allowing clinicians at any hospital within Hunter New England Health to review the results. This means that patients requiring transfer to an acute hospital for treatment, can have their results reviewed, and care plan prepared prior to their arrival to the new facility.

THESE two Year 10 girls have been helping at their school’s Breakfast Club every Monday for the last three years.

They arrive at school at 7.15am with Sophie bringing a tin of milo one week and Mabel every other week.

The daily Breakfast Club feeds up to 120 students a day and comprises of a hot milo in the colder months of term’s two and three, while juice is served in term’s one and four.

Students are also offered toasted sandwiches every day.

Lue Fagan from Irrawang High School told News Of The Area, “We are also eternally grateful to the members of Raymond Terrace

Lions Club who come in most days to volunteer, with another two Raymond Terrace locals Jeannie and Joannie who have been volunteering for four years as well.”

The Breakfast Club has been running for around seven years and since the school’s Principal Paul Baxter has been at the school the Breakfast Club has been running daily (from weekly).

Mr Baxter said, “For many reasons we found that students were coming to school without breakfast and that’s not an ideal learning situation.”

It’s great to see the school’s young volunteers helping their peers and the greater community.

Well done and Thank You.

Panic Buyers are back

THERE’S only one thing the residents of Port Stephens hate more than potholes, and that’s panic buyers, according to the numerous community based social media pages this past week.

In a return to form that has seen a case of breaking wind in Melbourne requiring a change of undergarments in Port Stephens, local supermarkets are again running short on toilet paper and other essential household items.

After the initial panic of the COVID-19 pandemic which saw regional shelves hammered for dung tickets, the Nation sighed collectively as stocks were replenished and rational thought resumed.

With the latest spike in Victoria of Coronavirus cases the panic buyers are back and they’ve flushed their cognitive reasoning with their last meal.

Former NOTA scribe and Medowie resident Julie McKimm couldn’t believe her eyes when she went to do the regular family shop at Woolworths Medowie last Thursday.

“I was surprised to see when doing my fortnightly shop that there was limited toilet paper yet again,” said Ms McKimm.

“I would have expected that in Victoria but not in Medowie!”

In separate statements, Woolworths are reintroducing a two packet limit per shopper whilst Coles will go further and restrict customers to just one pack of toilet roll across the Nation.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has also weighed into the panic buying debate telling punters to curb their behaviour.

“Stop it, it’s ridiculous,” he said.

Magic mushrooms lands man in Court

A MAN will face court after police allegedly located a commercial quantity of ‘magic mushrooms’ during a vehicle stop in the Hunter last month.

About 10.25pm on Friday 1 May 2020, officers from Port Stephens-Hunter Police District were travelling along

Raymond Terrace Road, Nelson Plains, when they noticed a grey Holden Cruze parked on the side of the road in darkness.

Officers stopped and spoke with the driver – a 19-year-old man – before conducting a search of the vehicle.

Police located and seized more than 120g of psilocybin, commonly known as ‘magic mushrooms’, as well as a small

amount of cannabis, drug paraphernalia and cash.

He was arrested and taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station where he was charged with supplying a prohibited drug larger than commercial quantity, possessing a prohibited drug and dealing

with proceeds of crime.

He was refused bail to face Newcastle Local Court on Saturday 2 May, where he was granted conditional bail to appear at Raymond Terrace Local Court this week (Monday 29 June 2020).

Incredible By Nature Campaign AT a time when the tourism industry is suffering, Port Stephens finally has something new to share on the tourism front.

Originally planned for launch earlier this year and postponed due to COVID-19 the new tourism campaign has finally been released.

Incredible By Nature is aimed at inspiring young and active couples to the region.

The footage of our beaches, Fingal Spit, Tomaree Headland and people enjoying their time in the pristine environment which we call home is nothing short of stunning.

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer said now is an ideal time to launch a new destination travel campaign to help restart the local economy.

“Our local community, like many others across Australia, is still dealing with the economic and social impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This exciting new campaign will put Port Stephens top-of-mind for domestic travellers at a crucial time — when we need to restart the visitor economy that our community thrives on.

“With International borders still closed and the recent easing of travel restrictions across the country, now is the perfect time to encourage Aussies to explore their own backyard,” he said.

The campaign was funded through Destination NSW and features interviews with locals that can be viewed on social media platforms.

Destination Port Stephens successfully applied for matched dollar-for-dollar funding from Destination NSW under the Regional Tourism Fund (RTF) Marketing Program to be able to create and implement the

new destination brand and marketing campaign.

Destination Port Stephens Chairman Andrew Macdonald said the Incredible By Nature campaign puts the natural wonders of Port Stephens front and centre.

“The seascapes and landscapes here are an idyllic backdrop for the many amazing experiences that feature in our campaign — from quad biking and sandboarding down the largest moving dunes in the Southern Hemisphere, to swimming with wild dolphins and hiking through bushland to the top of Mount Tomaree,” Mr Macdonald said.

In support of the joint campaign with Destination NSW, Council will be investing in outdoor, print and TV advertising to encourage more people to visit and spend in the region, ultimately driving economic growth and supporting local jobs.

The campaign tells local stories, one of these features Frank Futureat Fingal Lighthouse, another Greg Finn, a local Abalone Fisherman, speaking not only about the environment, and how we love our clean beaches, but how wonderful the sense of community is in the region.

Special Wall of Remembrance

HAVE you ever wondered why a War Memorial features a Cenotaph which has a column cut at an angle or appears to be broken?

Such structures are purposely designed this way to symbolise lives cut short.

At the moment,Tilligerry RSL and Sports Club is in the middle of a major internal makeover. Meanwhile, on the outside, the RSL subbranch has been enhancing its Cenotaph and erecting a special wall of remembrance of those who fought for and served our country in the armed forces.

PORT STEPHENS TOURISM CAMPAIGN q Gary Davis, Ray Harvey and John Olive at work on the Cenotaph. to the cenotaph and in an alcove at the Club’s entrance a new Memorial Wall features the names of over one hundred local men and women whose memories have been preserved on individual plaques.

These have been mounted under the particular branch in which members served with women’s names occupying an adjacent wing.

Spent cartridge cases have been fixed to the walls so that flowers can be placed in them by visiting family and friends.

All of the Club’s amenities (including dining facilities) have been transferred to Tanilba Golf Club until the internal renovations are complete.

Business Women Networking Returns

THIS week saw the return of networking for the dynamic Port Stephens Women in Business. The event was held at Murray’s Brewery for a two hour period.

Of course the format was very different with everyone adhering to social distancing.

President of Port Stephens Women in Business Fiona Brown of YOUtopia Wellbeing doubled as the guest speaker covering the 3Cs of Communication.

The networking event was attended by 25 local business women.

Kerri Rodley of Port Stephens Women in Business told News Of The Area, “It was the group’s first event since COVID so we may be sure all social distancing rules were followed for networking.”

The purpose of the group is to allow women in business to connect with each other.

Many women who start their own business operate at a micro or small business level allowing them flexibility to work around family commitments.

However, this can also be isolating, making networking and keeping up to date with what is happening in the business landscape locally important.

Knowing you are not alone or the only business dealing with issues is reassuring.

So too is creating exposure, finding suppliers and potential buyers for products and services.

“Everyone got an opportunity to introduce themselves and their businesses to the group.” She said.

I’M always proud to call Port Stephens home — this week I was especially proud.

For the first time since the coronavirus outbreak began, I visited Sydney for the launch of the new Port Stephens tourism campaign with the NSW Government and Destination Port Stephens.

It was great to get out and about again, especially for the reveal of the Incredible By Nature campaign — aimed at attracting young active visitors to our region to enjoy the natural wonders we have to offer.

There was a real sense of pride at seeing our magnificent backyard plastered across the light rail network in Sydney’s CBD. After the hard times imposed on us because of coronavirus, now is an ideal time to launch a tourism campaign to help restart the local economy.

With international travel borders still closed and the easing of travel restrictions within the state, the campaign encourages Aussies to explore their own backyard.

Keep an eye out for the new campaign when you’re in town, on social media or watching the news. You might even notice a few familiar faces, including our very own John ‘Stinker’ Clarke.

While the new campaign will encourage visitors to our area — I’m very aware that we’re still in the midst of a global pandemic.

Our Council has been working closely with our tourism and business operators to make sure we are ready to reopen, with a focus on keeping our community and visitors as safe as possible.

Now that the new campaign is out — I hope you enjoy it as much as I do and look forward to safely welcoming visitors back to our region.

WHEN Marion Brown and Husband Les moved to Karuah two years ago they wanted to become a part of the local community and find a way to contribute.

When the COVID19 pandemic struck they had a wonderful idea as to how to do so.

Finding themselves in isolation they spent the extra time at home getting to work on the Little Street Library.

The Library is a beautifully constructed wooden box handmade by Mr

and Mrs Brown.

It is situated on the street in front of their home at thirty-one George Street.

Locals can take a book, leave a book for others to enjoy or do both.

Mrs. Brown explained, “We didn’t know a lot of people, but a lot of people walk up and down our street.”

“The problem is you don’t get to talk to them.”

“When the virus started, we thought let’s start a Library and put it down the front, and it just took off.”

Local Op Shops begin to re-open

VINNIES and local Op Shops have begun the process of reopening, and are now operating under adjusted hours, and with special restrictions in place, based on Government and health recommendations.

Kim Boyd, Vinnies Regional Retail Manager North-East, said that they were excited to be reopening their shops across NSW with their Medowie location still under assessment.

“We are taking a measured response to re-opening our shops based on a number of factors, including the age of our volunteers and the number of reported cases in a location.

“If volunteers are at a higher risk of contracting the virus we

ask that they prioritise their health and step away until it is safe to return.

“The initial response we’ve had from volunteers has been very positive and volunteers are glad to be coming back to work and helping out their local communities.”

In terms of donations, Ms Boyd said they were heartened to see the response from people eager to donate to their shops.

“People can donate items through their local Vinnies Charity Bin; if the bin is full we ask that people hold onto their items until shops re-open and not dump goods outside the shop front,” she said.

“Vinnies welcome donations of good quality clean clothing and household items.

“Please do not drop off soiled or damaged goods that have to be sent to the landfill at our expense.

“If you wouldn’t give something to family or friends, please don’t give it to Vinnies.”

Donations will be isolated for 48 hours before they are placed into sorting and sale, and all volunteers are equipped with PPE including gloves and hand sanitiser for their safety.

Vinnies have asked that customers adhere to social distancing measures, and to help maintain this, will be placing limits on patrons entering the stores at any one time, in addition to the dressing rooms remaining out of action.

Action to Save Koalas

NSW Labor is calling for urgent action to protect koala populations that a new report has found could be extinct by 2050.

The cross party upper house inquiry report into koala populations and habitat in NSW found: Koala populations in NSW will become extinct before 2050 unless urgent steps are taken to align planning, forestry, land clearing and offsetting policies to ensure that koala habitat is protected; The impact of the last bushfire season has made the plight of NSW koalas more urgent. This comes on top of other serious threats to koala populations such as climate change, urban growth and loss of vital wildlife corridors through clearing; The current NSW Koala Strategy fails to meet the NSW Chief Scientist's recommendations regarding a whole of government approach to koala protection –and doesn’t protect koalas, stabilise or grow their population.

Labor’s Shadow Minister for Environment, Kate Washington, has welcomed the report and urged the NSW Government to adopt the inquiry’s roadmap to save koalas.

“I hope today’s report is a wakeup call for the Environment Minister, Matt Kean. There’s a real risk koalas will become extinct because of the government’s inaction, so he must do everything in his power to stop that,” Ms Washington said.

“No one wants the only koalas in NSW to be in zoos. No one wants to explain to our grandchildren that we were warned but did nothing to save wild koalas in NSW. “The NSW Government must take urgent action to

save NSW koalas from extinction.”

Labor fully supports the inquiry’s recommendations, which include according to Ms Washintons office are: • Collaboration between the NSW Chief Scientist, the NSW Koala Advisory Panel, and Forestry Corporation to establish an agreed method to count koalas, as the current estimates are outdated and unreliable.

• The urgent prioritisation of koala habitat and wildlife corridors and more support for community organisations to regenerate corridors; • Additional support for local councils to develop and implement their own koala management plans that can help protect koala habitat and populations through the planning process; • Greater investment in new plantations forests; • The establishment of a new Koala National Park along the Georges River and investigation of the Great Koala National Park on the mid north coast; • Review and make changes to planning, clearing and private native forestry codes and policies to better protect koala habitat; • Invest in funds to assist land holders to protect, improve and maintain koala habitat on private land; • A review of the biodiversity offsetting scheme.

THE rescheduled NSW SUP Titles and the NSW Longboard Titles will call Port Stephens home on the new dates of the 20 – 25 August 2020 (so long as the NSW Government says it’s safe to do so).

The two-state title events will form the Port Stephens Surf Festival and decide the NSW Teams for the upcoming Australian SUP Titles and the Australian Longboard Titles.

Over 200 competitors are expected to compete in the six-day event, which will see longboards

run from the 20th - 22nd and the SUP’s follow from the 22nd - 25th.

Mayor Ryan Palmer says Port Stephens is ready for the return of the NSW SUP Titles and NSW Longboard Titles when the NSW Government says it’s safe to do so.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming back the Port Stephens Surf Festival as soon as it’s safe to do so. The beaches are looking incredible, the bays are pristine and we’re ready to host this fantastic event as soon as the time is right.”
