At a recent meeting for Fingal Bay members was, as usual, cheerful and informative, plus the welcome induction of new member Gill Whitton.

After a morning tea break came the Annual General Meeting and the election of a new Committee.

Julia Redlich told News Of The Area, “Ross Jennings took over as Supervisor and it was no surprise when Jenny Wright agreed to a request to consent for a second year as President.

“Very soon, Jenny was delighted to say that all other positions were filled.” Another interesting and friendly year was assured, although the Club is looking at innovative ways to connect through the difficult times ahead where seniors are being advised to stay home.

only a matter of time as case number surge, so too will fatalities.

The numbers clearly show that elderly populations are more at risk than younger people; this is of concern in our region.

While New Zealand is in lockdown working towards eradication of the disease, Australia is working to flatten the curve; A move which will hopefully see emergency departments and ICU facilities able to cope with all the cases with which our community is faced with.

For Port Stephens, Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest these are particularly trying times.

Port Stephens beaches, parks, playgrounds, boat ramps and halls are all closed.

Our elderly and vulnerable population is

scared, and rightly so.

The statistics show that the older you are the harder the virus seems to hit.

Some elderly residents are fearful as to whether they will have beds or ventilators if they need them.

Add to this the lack of hospital facilities and health services in Port Stephens and Tea Gardens / Hawks Nest and there is plenty to worry about.

Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington has taken the stance of actively discouraging visitors to the region – with two Sydney radio interviews this week, based on discouraging visitation to the region which desperately needs to protect its vulnerable and elderly residents.

In a letter to Health Minister Brad Hazzard she stated that the only available testing is over an hour’s drive, from residents at

Ms Washington is worried like the residents, as many of the older more vulnerable residents can’t drive making testing unattainable.

Ms Washington has also requested drive through testing at Raymond Terrace, on the Tomaree Peninsula, and in Tea Gardens / Hawks Nest to make testing accessible to residents.

She is calling for “Accessible testing clinics, accessible treatment beds and resources, arrangements for travel to and from clinics and additional support and supplies for those in self isolation.”

Ms Washington has also raised concerns with Minister Hazzard regarding

the influx of holidaymakers ignoring non-essential travel bans.

She urged the Minister, “To protect my community and others from the risk posed by tourists, I urge you to issue clear direction to all accommodation providers to prevent holidaymaking, by adding this to the restricted list.”

Dr Paul Craven, Medical Controller for COVID-19 at Hunter New England Health told News Of the Area, “We have accessed equipment and ICU capacity right across the District and have plans in place to surge when we need to.

“Every one of our hospitals are ready and prepared to treat COVID-19 patients as required.”

Ms Washington’s letter to Minister Hazzard shows her concern for the preparedness of Tomaree Community Hospital which she believes is not ready to treat COVID-19 patients.

“The community has an important role to play in keeping people out of hospitals.

“It is of the utmost importance that everyone practices good infection prevention.

“This includes staying at home and away from other people if you are unwell with respiratory symptoms… cleaning your hands regularly throughout the day with soap and running water for 20 seconds or with an alcohol based rub,” he said.

Kate Washington also stated, “I appreciate the terrible hardship that a lack of visitors to our region is causing local businesses.

I’ll be working hard to see our local businesses and families get all the support they can during this crisis, so we can get through this as safely as possible.”

She uses fabrics featuring indigenous designs which have intellectual copyright patents ensuring that the artists are paid for their designs.

Using this ethos Lori’s work contributes to the financial sustainability of our indigenous communities.

Lori’s work and the fabrics that she uses are cotton and are designed to be used as a resource for children to connect symbolically with Aboriginal art.

Many of the artists come from remote communities where employment opportunities are limited.

The items and artworks used are culturally appropriate and where possible artworks are attributed to artists and if available the background story of the artwork is provided with any works purchased.

She believes that it is important for cultural items to be produced in Australia benefiting Aboriginal communities.

Lori Parish told News Of The Area, “What I make with my hands I give with my heart.”

She is very proud to be able to create a cultural resource which can promote positive engagement with the Aboriginal community and to help Indigenous people to be able to progress towards financial sustainability through sharing their culture with the broader community.

Group’s meetings on hold after last AGM

THE Combined Probus Club of Medowie held its AGM recently and fortunately before the restrictions due to Covid-19 came into effect.

There are some changes this year with Neville White the new President, Jan Bevan the Secretary and David Thomas the Treasurer, a role he had held for quite a number of years before he had a year’s break.

The outgoing President thanked the previous Committee and the members for their support in the past year and wished the new Committee all the best for the coming year.

The Club enjoyed a Change-Over lunch after the AGM at the Medowie Macadamia Farm, with many members enticed by the many macadamia delicacies and other items on the menu.

Member Kevin Tomlinson told News Of The Area, “Unfortunately the April meeting and activities have been cancelled and the Committee is hoping the

situation may soon ease so that the Club can resume its regular activities.”

Probus is an association of retired or semi-retired people who have joined together in a Club; the basic purpose of which is to provide regular opportunities to keep their minds active, expand

their interests and enjoy the fellowship of new friends.

The Combined Probus Club of Medowie Inc meets at the Medowie Community Hall at 10am on the third Wednesday of each month pending Government regulations and recommendations regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Committee meets regularly on the second Wednesday of each month.

The mantra of Probus which is “Fun, Fellowship and Friendship” and the Club tries to ensure that this is evident in meetings and activities.

WE are living in unprecedented, almost unfathomable times.Stripping it back to bare bones, stopping this virus is our single goal and in pursuit of that goal, all aspects of our ‘normal’ lives have evaporated. Right now, there are a very small number of Covid19 cases in the Hunter/Mid-North Coast, so in that respect we are a little ahead of the game – and we certainly intend to stay there! That the property market will stall in the short term is no surprise, simply because travel and gatherings such as ‘open houses’ are restricted, but for those hundreds, if not thousands of vendors who sold prior to Covid19 taking hold, finding a new home is still a necessity. To this end, our property market will continue to tick over, albeit a little more slowly.

Buyers are still out there and while a few have thought it’s a great time to offer ‘offensive bids’, in the main, vendors and buyers are treating each other with respect. R&R is adhering to all social distancing & hygiene policies and we are here to service the needs of clients and prospective clients across our sales and rental spheres. We continue to complete private inspections and appraisals and we are also offering FaceTime and videos tours of our properties.

Council restricts access, public spaces TO continue to assist in limiting the spread of COVID-19 in Port Stephens and the broader Hunter Region communities, Port Stephens Council has made the decision to temporarily restrict access to its public spaces from today until further notice.

Port Stephens Council has initiated these actions in response to the Prime Minister’s call to cease all non-essential travel, including vacation travel.

These measures are designed to prevent public gatherings and encourage travellers to stay at home rather than visit our region for the moment, so that we can all help stop the spread of COVID-19.

The health and wellbeing of all people should be everyone’s priority at this time.

Mrs TK,

WHAT a strange world we are living in. At the moment Donald Trump is talking about bringing back military retirees, our PM is explaining we can’t have gatherings of more than two people, my kids are asking if they are ever going to get to see their friends again and middle-aged women are singing One Day More from Les Miserables using their hairbrushes as microphones.

I think we are all grieving for our old life – the one we took for granted just a few short weeks ago. Back when we had stable employment, the idea of toilet paper rations was too bizarre to contemplate, our children were grumbling about going to school and the thought of being in lockdown was something confined to faraway lands.

It is very difficult to stay motivated when working from home as those who have done so for years, myself included, will attest. There are so many distractions. There is no delineation between your working life and home life. People drop in unannounced (though that isn’t so much of an issue now). It is much more fun to play with the dog than write a report, and then there is the fridge.

The only way I have found to successfully work from home is to break the day up into tasks, keep a checklist, and give yourself rewards (I don’t mean anything fancy, just a cup of tea, or five minutes in the sun, or a frequent break to stretch and rest your eyes). Of course this may have been achievable before we were all suddenly thrust into the home schooling arena (previously the domain of women who describe their kids as their tribe, wear kaftans and eat their placentas). I mean, some of us just aren’t wired for home schooling. We actually work to get away from the little darlings.

I think, Mrs TK, we are all just muddling our way through this brave new world in the best way we possibly can. Success now has different parameters. If you make it through the day with a few tears, some sort of meal on the table, kids with clean hands and half a roll of toilet paper then, by my book, you are winning.

Irukandji Needs Help to Feed Endangered Rays

WHILE many businesses are being put into hibernation, due to COVID-19 Irukandji Shark and Ray Centre is facing a devastating situation.

After financing and investing in new premises, they find themselves unable to open.

Without help this business could be one of Port Stephens first tourism attractions to close its doors for good.

Ticket sales fund the upkeep and care of the animals at the Centre.

It is not a case of this business can sit it out and wait for months to reopen and rehire staff.

Animals need to be fed, the tanks need cleaning and the water still needs to be filtered.

This business can’t sit it out and wait for the Government stimulus package.

The animals need to be fed daily. Today the Centre launched a Go Fund Me appeal to help feed the animals and pay their electricity bill Irukandji Shark & Ray Encounters has been closed for three weeks for the move into its new facility.

The move has been 5 years planning and all our money building it.

A desperate and devastated Lia Pereira told News Of The Area, “Now with all our animals safely moved and the last finishing touches being completed, we were due to open in 5 days. The COVID-19

Virus shutdowns has placed Irukandji into survival mode.

With 253 animals, including many endangered or vulnerable species, Irukandji is asking the community for help to keep them alive and healthy during this unimaginable Pandemic.

“We normally have regular school tours which have been cancelled, our overseas tourists will not be visiting and our grand opening simply won’t be happening either, and as a non essential service we can’t open the doors at all.

“This leaves us with no income, the same ongoing costs, savings ploughed into building a world class facility that nobody can visit,” she said.

Irukandji is a small family owned business that has grown without Government funding and the owners are shattered at the thought of losing everything, before they open in the new location which was also going to serve as an Tourist Information Centre.

The team at Irukandji are also the founders of Sea Shelter.

They take injured animals to Sydney, organise clean-ups of mangroves and marinas rehabilitate and release animals including sea snakes, and rays.

Lia fears that given the desperate nature of their situation that rescued wildlife may also suffer.

The team is hopeful that with community support they will be able to open one day and continue their important conservation work for the future of our oceans.

MOST of us don’t know that the Nelson Bay Golf Club (NBGC) voted Golf NSW Country Club of the Year for 2019, runs on volunteer labour, from the Board and Ladies’ Committee down to folk who rake leaves or pick up sticks from around the course.

They supplement the work put in by the contracted labour in keeping both the course and the clubhouse running.

Ian Pfennigwerth told News Of The Area, “There are four teams of volunteers working alongside the Course Superintendent and his Green Staff; men on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays and a ladies group who garden on Wednesdays.”

The Tuesday Group has two main functions – structures and gardens.

Structures work includes

upkeep, repair and maintenance of course buildings other than permanent club assets, sandboxes, benches, bubblers and cart paths.

The Gardens portfolio includes the establishment, upkeep and maintenance of gardens around the course, and care for native flora.

“This involves control and elimination of lantana, camphor laurel and bitou bush from the native forest and safeguarding habitat for native birds and animals, including koalas.

“The Tuesday Group volunteers have developed a network of skills – concreting, plumbing, woodwork, water reticulation and delivery, painting – alongside gardening and plant husbandry, and they enjoy the transfer of skills and social exchange and interaction that comes from working with others to solve challenges,” he

Under 13’s won Grand Final

NELSON Bay Under 13's Junior cricket team (Makos) won the Grand Final on Saturday 14th March.

The game was played at Alder Park, New Lampton against Newcastle Western Suburbs Reds, who had finished top of the regular season having lost only one game, with Nelson Bay in second.

On the day the boys showed no fear and played as a tight team, excelling in the bowling and fielding department, bowling the Reds out for 116.

Chasing 117 with the weather turning fowl, the Makos openers made a fantastic start putting on a partnership of over fifty runs for no wicket.

The batting pressure continued and victory was sealed with seven and a half overs to spare and only two wickets lost.

This makes it three in a row for the team coached by Richard Vincent.

PORT Stephens residents are well placed to enjoy fishing as a sport.

We have the river, the Port and the sea.

While the boat ramps are closed shore based fishing is still very much an acceptable activity.

Importantly recreational fishing is a sport we can all participate in, and enjoy, while practicing social distancing.

The mud crabs are there right now ready to be had if you know where to put your traps in the rivers and locals are waiting anxiously to see the blue swimmers run.

Offshore the snapper are biting with good reds being caught and black snapper is about to make an appearance too.

The pearl perch are also biting around the offshore reefs; this is a beautiful eating fish.

There are plenty of mahi mahi or dolphin fish if you are looking for some excitement and you may even hook a marlin offshore.

The first striped marlin of the season has been landed, and there will be more to come for those that can get out there.

The offshore fishing boats are starting to see traguline also.

For those willing to brave an early morning or a late night there are mulloway in the estuary.

Off the beaches around Soldiers Point and to the west there are also sand whiting.

The bream are also on the bite around the Port.

Age is no barrier to landing

a good catch and the sport is for everyone.

One fisherman told News Of The Area, “There are plenty of places to drop a line where you can grab a feed of fish for the family.”

However, you do need a fishing licence to fish in NSW. When fishing in NSW waters, both in freshwater and saltwater, you must carry your recreational fishing licence with you.

This includes when spearfishing, hand lining, hand gathering, trapping, bait collecting and prawn netting, or when in possession of fishing gear in, on or near these waters.
