Three Charged: Public Place Shooting

THREE men have now been charged following investigations into a public place shooting at Raymond Terrace earlier this month.

About 11am on Saturday 2 May 2020, the occupants of a home on Benjamin Lee Drive, Raymond Terrace, located a .22 calibre bullet had penetrated the front door and lodged in an internal wall.

Officers from Port StephensHunter Police District were called, and an investigation commenced.

About 4.40pm Monday 18 May, officers arrested a 20-yearold man at Raymond Terrace Police Station.

He was charged with fire firearm at a dwelling house with disregard for public safety.

He was granted strict conditional bail and will appear in Raymond Terrace Local Court on Monday 15 June 2020.

The Port Stephens Community Is Cautiously Ready For The Return Of Tourists FROM Page 1 The region is used to an increased population during peak periods but this time the holiday break will be very different due to the impacts of COVID-19.

Businesses are seeing limited trading and many are still closed due to health concerns and the financial viability of opening during the pandemic.

Even with Premier Gladys Berejiklian announcing pubs, clubs, cafes and restaurants being able to seat up to 50 patrons in their establishments, many venues won’t have the capacity to operate with the four-square-meter per patron rule.

Mayor Ryan Palmer is optimistic that locals and visitors alike will do the right thing and help get the local economy ticking over once more.

“All the way through this crisis we have always acted on the best medical advice available to protect the people of Port Stephens,” said Mayor Palmer.

“The medical advice is now saying it is safe to travel to regional NSW, while ensuring that we all still take the necessary precautions.

“It is now time to do what we

do best, in opening up our businesses and sharing our amazing place with visitors.”

Port Stephens MP Kate Washington said getting the balance right between the tourism industry and protecting the regions most vulnerable is the priority.

“Balancing the interests of a tourism economy with an older community particularly susceptible to this awful virus warrants a cautious approach,” said Ms Washington.

“If we move too fast we could easily return to fewer freedoms, and much worse, we could lose lives.

“People are welcome to escape the confines of their homes and visit us, but it does not mean they escape the risk of the virus.

“We must all stay vigilant.”

Black spots will receive a total $3.25M in funding Five notorious Port Stephens black spots will receive a Federal funding for safety upgrades following a Federal Government announcement.

THE successful grant application will enable essential safety upgrades of Grahamstown Road at Medowie, Duns Creek Road at Duns Creek, Lemon Tree Passage Road at Salt Ash, Soldiers Point Road at Salamander Bay and Gan Gan Road at Anna Bay. Council’s Asset Section Manager John Maretich says these projects have been selected due to the number and nature of crashes recorded at each site.

“Council’s successful funding application will help to create safer roads for all users across Port Stephens by helping to reduce the number and severity of incidents at 5 key black spots.

“The project teams are currently producing detailed designs and we’ll share these with nearby businesses and residents over the coming months,” he said.

Works on Grahamstown Road, Lemon Tree Passage Road and Soldiers Point Road will take place in the 2020 to 2021 financial year.

Upgrades to Duns Creek Road and Gan Gan Road have been funded over 2 years to allow for longer design, environmental and community feedback. Construction is due to take place in the 2021 to 2022 financial year.

Elizabeth Keeley who volunteers for Medowie Girl Guides said, “Volunteering is an amazing opportunity for me to give back to the community, make lifelong friends and learn new skills.”

“As a Guide Leader for over 20 years in Medowie I have had the pleasure of meeting so many of the female youth of Medowie and work with the most dedicated and enthusiastic group of Leaders, Support Group Members and Parents.”

Carly Wheeler, Co-ordinator of Medowie Tigers Playgroup told News Of the Area, “From a young age, my parents instilled that you help out and give back to your community where you can.

“When we moved to Medowie a few years ago, I went along to the local playgroup, a few months later they needed a new coordinator, so I put my hand up to help out.”

She added, “The Medowie Tigers Playgroup is an amazing group of parents and grandparents, with whom I have made many friends and love to see the friendships forming between other parents and the children.”

It seems there is a common theme in the benefits of becoming a volunteer, including learning new skills and the enduring friendships.

No matter where your interests lie, there is a local group that would welcome you with open arms.

COVID verses Great Depression FOR ninety year old Vic Madden, the tough times we are currently having are nothing compared to those he has gone through during a long and fruitful life.

His childhood in England saw his family surviving the Great Depression and WWII. “Ours was a family of six,”he said.

”My father worked in a dairy but it was very hard to make ends meet,” Mr Madden said.

“Dad trapped rabbits and hares to put meat on the table and grew vegetables in the back yard as well.”

“Clothing was never discarded and hand-medowns were the order of the day. Holes in socks were

darned.”

Mr Madden told News Of The Area, “We did not have a car and bicycles were our only form of transport.”

“With the coming of the War, everything was rationed.

You couldn’t hoard food as they are doing at the moment and we all knitted socks for the soldiers,” he said.

“We kept rabbits in the

backyard and my father had an allotment in a community garden where he grew vegetables. If meat became scarce due to the sinking of the supply ships

by German submarines, we could sometimes get tinned Australian corned beef,” he said.

“My mother was always a pillar of strength. She would

POLICE are investigating an armed robbery that occered at Williamtown on Tuesday.

About 3.30am Tuesday 26 May, a 32-year-old male employee was inside a service station on Lavis Lane, Williamtown, when two men entered the store armed with a baseball bat and a machete.

The men threatened the attendant before one of the men hit him with the baseball bat and removed cash from the till.

A 38-year-old male customer then entered the store and was chased by the pair before they fled the scene, running north towards Nelson Bay Road.

Officers from Port Stephens-Hunter PD attended and established a crime scene and have commenced inquiries.

I have a lot of confusion about the correct way to sign off on email correspondence.

There are so many variations. What is the standard these days for business correspondence?

AUTUMN CALLING “How is Autumn looking from a presentation perspective?”

AUTUMN is such a lovely time of year. I think it’s my favourite season. The sun is still warm, the leaves turn gorgeous shades of red, gold and orange. It’s just glorious and belies the fact that winter is coming. From a home presentation perspective, accessories do well when reflecting Autumnal colours. They create a feeling of warmth that subliminally translates to comfort and hence a feeling of security.

While styling in Autumn colours is a scenario that repeats itself in a general sense every year, this year I’m seeing an even stronger presence as homeowners have ‘nested’ during Covid-19 lockdown; making their home environments wonderfully comfortable – and safe. It is important however, to remember to keep your interior filled with as much natural light as possible to balance with your warm, rich accessories. Seasonally adjusting your accessories in line with your listing period ensures you are providing an aesthetically pleasing palette that reflects the environment.

Additionally, as accessories, you are able to take them with you to your new home and continue to update your interior with the changing seasons.

The New Normal

NSW is blazing a trail towards a future with strong business and COVID-19 safe measures.

While Queensland is operating somewhat like a Banana Republic, NSW has cleared the decks, reopening accommodation, tourist attractions, schools and allowing restaurants, pubs and clubs 50 patrons per venue.

With the Queensland border firmly sealed at the time of writing and NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian opening the state for intrastate travel from June 1 areas like Port Stephens and the Myall Coast are set to be hot options for those looking to get out of the house.

One new case of COVID-19 has been recorded in the Hunter New England District, breaking a two week trend of no new cases in the region.

While many locals are apprehensive, the Premier says it is safe as long as we maintain social distancing.

Local restaurants, clubs and cafes are busily gearing up to welcome visitors which are set to put locals back to work in the hospitality industry.

Restaurants, pubs and clubs need to abide not only by the 1.5 metre social distancing rule but also the 4 square metre rule.

Restaurateurs who have been struggling with only 10 patrons are keen to see the numbers increase, and they have also expressed their disappointment over people who have booked tables and failed to turn up.

With increased cleaning, and new rules it is best to ring or book online before simply turning up; limiting the number of people and the need to social distance outside venues.

Beauty salons have also been given the all clear to open with new rules on June 1 to coincide with the lift in regional tourism.

Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr Nick Coates said, “We can be very confident with the numbers, we have talked about flattening the curve, there are single digit numbers in the last 24 hours… which means we can get schools back and to steadily increase the numbers on public transport.”

Asymptomatic carriers are still of concern and have

been for the whole epidemic which is why continuing hand hygiene and social distancing is imperative as Australia goes forward.

It is also essential that people who are unwell do not leave their home and get tested for COVID-19.

The NSW Government has not as yet given a timeline for the reopening of gyms.

Community sport will be back for which many children will be grateful, however grandparents are set to miss out on seeing milestones as Prime Minister Scott Morrison and the health advisors have ruled against grandparents as spectators at sporting fixtures.

Kids participating in community sport will also need to shower at home, and there will be no high fives and no huddles.

Banning grandparents from community sport is about protecting the vulnerable.

Greatest fears across the community are of a second wave of infection and the demographics of the Myall Coast and Port Stephens sees many of our residents are particularly vulnerable.

Dear Ms AT,

BACK in the day when I was a wide-eyed student, Mrs Loehorn made it very clear that the two acceptable ways of signing off on business correspondence were ‘Yours sincerely’ or ‘Yours faithfully’. How things have changed. I just had a quick scan through the last 20 emails I received and the variety is overwhelming, each of them providing very distinct undertones.

Interestingly there wasn’t one Yours sincerely or Yours faithfully in the mix, which would have Mrs Loehorn rolling in her grave.

Here we go: Best: This is the sign-off favoured by those in the publishing/arty/creatives world. It’s short and punchy but it takes a certain je ne sais quoi to pull it off successfully.

Thanks in advance: This one is a desperate plea for the receiver to do something. The email will involve a lot of work on your part and the ‘thanks in advance’ doesn’t allow any room for wiggling your way out of it. Thanks in advance is from a savvy sender. They probably work for a company called Honey and Fox. Cheers: To me this is a Friday afternoon email, and yet for many this is their standard sign off. There’s something overly friendly and celebratory about it. I don’t sign off with Cheers unless I have three vodka shots lined up next to my laptop. Each to their own.

Aho: Ok, this one is usually attached to an email about mana yoga, chakra alignments, luna medicine circles, sitar strumming and pretty much any other offering that sounds new-agey and visionary, but will actually cost you your week’s wage and maybe even your soul. Lately this sign off is also attached to conspiracy emails about 5G, Bill Gates, Lady GaGa, satan worshipping, child trafficking and Adrenochrome scare-mongering, which seems a little at odds with such an earth mother complimentary close.

Speak soon: This is a good one to use when something is about three weeks overdue. It sort of lets the receiver hang in there on the promise that the work is on its way. It can have a calming effect and also let you off the hook for another 48 hours.

THERE’S no question about it the people of Port Stephens, and the Myall are passionate about our migratory whales and despite everything that is going on in the world, the whales migration is a constant.

It’s that time of year when locals get their “Whale On”.

Each year from May the humpback whales and other species make the trek north to the warmer waters of Queensland.

Experts estimate that around 30,000 whales will make the annual migration and they will return south from August with their calves.

Imagine Cruises have been offering virtual whale watching during the COVID-19 lockdown but for die hard enthusiasts the good news is that Moonshadow-TQC will be operating daily whale watching cruises from May 27.

These socially distanced experiences will offer those who partake a very private and exclusive experience.

Mel Turner of Moonshadow-TQC told News Of The Area, “We have the benefit of large vessels that can comfortably comply with the social distancing rules, our crew and team have been inducted with special training to ensure all areas of the vessels are cleaned and we have made some rather large modifications to the vessels removing seating to ensure

safe distance for those in the main cabin,” she said.

The company has also implemented new boarding procedures on the docks to the vessels’ With the current COVID-19 restrictions cruises will be limited to 10 passengers on board, this will change as restrictions are further eased.

The company is confident that they can safely get people back on the water for the highly anticipated Whale Season.

While some will whale watch from the boats, there are plenty of shore based vantage points

reported that it was rolling heavily, causing container stacks to collapse and several containers to fall overboard.

The Master of the APL England has reported that 40 containers were lost overboard, 74 containers have been damaged. Six containers are reported to be protruding from starboard side, and three from the port side of the ship.

The APL England is currently located to the north of Sydney and is continuing to head north to minimise the impact of the heavy weather.

Port Stephens and Myall Coast residents will be among the first to know if there is any pollution from the lost containers landing on our beaches.

For commercial fishermen this is bad news, they have

only just had the dangerous and damaging debris from the YM Efficiency incident cleared, now there could be more rubbish and pollution on the seabed, damaging nets and endangering crews.

Semi submerged containers cause a particular hazard to navigation for all boats.

AMSA intends to task one our challenger jets to proceed to the area to look for containers and debris and to inspect the ship for any signs of damage or pollution.

A NSW Maritime spokesperson told News Of The Area, “ The incident occurred in Commonwealth waters approximately 70km east of Wollongong.

“The vessel APL England is transiting north and is currently east of Evans Head and about to depart NSW waters.

ANOTHER East Coast Low and another ship loses containers off the NSW Coast.

It’s been just two years since the YM Efficiency lost containers off Port Stephens.

This incident has happened at the same time of the year in a similar weather pattern to the fateful beaching of the Pasha Bulker ship off Newcastle.

Now the wild weather over the weekend has seen the Singapore flagged container ship APL England experienced a temporary loss of propulsion during heavy seas about 73 kilometres south east of Sydney.

The ship was travelling from China to Australia.

The ship’s power was restored within a few minutes but during this time the ship

NSW Maritime (a division of Transport for NSW) has commenced planning and coastal surveillance today for debris that may wash up on the coastline.

Monitoring will continue for any shoreline impacts the government will seek compensation from the shipping line that owns the APL England should a clean-up be required.

“The NSW public are urged to report sightings of debris to 13 12 36,” they said.

The vessel has passed up the coast from Wollongong through the coastal waters of Port Stephens and the Mid North Coast.

By Mitch LEES PORT Stephens MP Kate Washington is encouraging local not-for-profit groups to apply for funding from the annual Community Building Partnership Grants (CBPG) program.

Not for profit groups across Port Stephens, including P&Cs, sporting clubs, environment groups, and others can apply for funding for capital projects or the purchase of large equipment.

“I know many groups will struggle to find sponsorship this year as businesses tighten their belts,” said Ms Washington.

“In these times, grant funding becomes extra important for our local community groups.

“I especially encourage groups who haven’t applied in the past to have a go and make an application.”

Recent recipients of CBPG funding include the Glen Oak School of Arts in the west of Port Stephens, which received a $30,000 grant in the 2019 round.

The Glen Oak School of Arts is a community hall facility built in 1899.

The hall provides a much needed space for community gatherings in this rural part of Port Stephens and the grant will fund much needed repairs to the historical site.

A statement from the Glen Oak School of Arts said that the funding would help restore the community hall to its former glory.

“The grant will go a long way to maintaining and bringing the hall and grounds up to scratch for all our community groups and events,” said the statement.

“It’s so important to have these central hubs in our communities.”

Other recent recipients of funding include the Karingal Preschool Nelson Bay who received $4,526, Irrawang Public School P&C who received $15,000 for new storage facilities, and Medowie Public School P&C who received $15,000 for a wetland rehabilitation project.

Applications for the CBPG program close on 12 June.

Winter’s Swell Start

WINTER was right on time in the Port Stephens region as 90km/h winds whipped along the coastline and a 5 metre swell battered the bays beaches last weekend.

Temperatures saw the mercury dip to a low of 8°C on Friday whilst an Antarctic driven east coast low saw local surfers don the rubber and get amongst the coning wave conditions.

Some inexperienced watermen rolled the dice in the dangerous conditions at One Mile Beach on Saturday morning and were swept along the southern point before being picked up by

surf lifesavers thankfully still on patrol.

On the ocean side beaches of Shoal Bay conditions were more favourable as locals and visitors scrambled to ride the portal.

Anna Bay expat and former bodyboarding world tour competitor Dallas Singer returned to the line-up at Box Beach and dropped anchor on a few heavy wedges that excited the peanut gallery looking on.

“I was lucky enough to grow up in the area and this beach set the platform for the rest of my career in the sport.”

With long-range forecasts predicting similar surf conditions for the winter season Dallas’s mind

is willing, even if the body is aging.

“This past swell was awesome, hopefully we see more of the same moving into the winter period that typically produces these large swell events,” said Dallas.

“What’s probably changed is that I feel the beatings a little more the following night, I didn’t mind getting buried in the sand as much in my 20s!”

Sadly, the mid-year concert that occurs at the end of this term has been cancelled and it is highly likely that our Jazz, Ballet and National Character exams will not go ahead this year. A Covid-19 Safe Dance Policy has already been written ready for whenever students may be allowed to dance together again.

Student Mikaela Neil told News Of The Area, “My favourite thing to do is dance, I am grateful that I am able to connect with my dance teachers and friends online during this time.”

“Thank-you Dance ‘n Dazzle for bringing dancing into our homes and continuing to spread positivity.”

Olivia Storer, aged 7, said, “I love being able to do online dance classes because I miss going to dance and this way I can still dance.”

Hopefully with the easing of restrictions the return to in-studio dancing isn’t too far away.
