TAFE NSW students won three of a possible six individual awards on offer at the Training Services NSW event, held at NEX in Newcastle’s CBD. The others were Apprentice of the Year and School Based Apprentice/Trainee of the Year. Another 12 TAFE NSW students were finalists.

Kaitlin said, “Winning this award is an amazing opportunity and ridiculously exciting.”

“I greatly appreciate having the opportunity to undertake my traineeships with Port Stephens Council. I would like to thank

the Council and TAFE NSW, especially my supportive team members and teacher.

“My advice to others is if you have an opportunity to do a traineeship then undertake one even if you don’t quite know where you want your career journey to go. At first I wasn’t sure and now I’m onto my third traineeship and doing my Diploma in Human Resource Management.

“It’s definitely helped me make decisions around what I am passionate about and what career path I want to take. And my TAFE NSW experience has been really, really good. I have

Community Learning for Community Gain

THURSDAY night shoppers at MarketPlace Raymond Terrace are familiar with the weekly award session of primary and high school students.

Located in the food court, each week participating schools nominate a student for a PBL—the short form of Positive Behaviour for Learning— Award.

News Of The Area

covers this weekly award and many school students have been the proud recipient of the award.

Nine schools from the local area participate in the program and the profiles of each student winner can be read at MarketPlace Raymond Terrace throughout the week of their nomination.

Positive Behaviour for Learning is so much more than a weekly award, though.

It is one of the products of schools getting together in the

area to create a community.

Ms Stacey Mathieson, Irrawang Public School Principal spoke to News Of The Area about this great program.

Gropers Retain Ben Clarke Shield SPORT

THE Ben Clarke Memorial Shield has been retained by the Nelson Bay Gropers against University on a day that saw the local community come together to celebrate Ben’s life, his contribution to the club and rugby on the peninsula.

The Gropers handed the students a 31 to 12 defeat in front of a packed Groperdome that witnessed some dazzling passages of play in trying conditions.

John ‘Stinker’ Clarke, Ben’s father and founding member of the club along with wife Ella, said the day was about the display of some fantastic

rugby and sharing memories with friends new and old.

“Today is in memory of our son Ben who was a very keen committeeman, he loved rugby and all those who played the game,” said Mr Clarke.

“This is the 15th year of the shield and we are just so proud to share the day with the Gropers and Uni.” The match saw the Gropers troubling Uni early in the forwards but it was Michael Hotene at outside centre that drew first blood courtesy of some slick footwork by Chad Northcott..

Northcott added the extras and the Gropers went out to a lead 7 to 0.

The Gropers scored another two tries with Northcott having a hand in both to take the score to 19 to 0 at the break.

The second half saw much of the same with prop Cameron Rowse displaying some wizardry to juggle and regain a slippery ball to cross the chalk.

Northcott again slotted the extras to make it 26 to 0 with Uni looking just about ready to towel off and grab the talcum powder.

Uni’s respite was around the corner when the students managed to crack the Groper’s line and added the extras to make it 26 to 7.

The Gropers came home with a wet sail as Emerson ‘Baby John’ Burgess crossed on the back of some lightning backs play to make it 31 to 7.

Uni grabbed a consolation try in the dying moments but the damage was done.

The final score 31 to 12 as the teams and the community came together in the postmatch engagement to celebrate Ben’s life.

The Gropers play Merewether Carlton at Townson Oval this Saturday.

Will converting a room be detrimental to my sale price?

WE have a 4bedroom home. The children have left home and I have been considering making one of the bedrooms into an art room for myself. I am worried that this will decrease the value of our home when it comes time to sell though. Do you think that 3bedrooms will be less desirable and therefore less valuable than a 4bedroom home?

I would suggest that converting a room to suit your current needs is perfectly fine and sensible, but I would strategically change it.

I believe that 4 bedrooms are more widely desired. Of course, there are always exceptions to any rules and this one will depend on the purchasers budget & age bracket, but in my experience, often, more bedrooms are better than less when it’s time to sell.

Whatever the chosen usage ie office, walk in robe, craft room etc ensure that you don’t make structural changes. If you require shelving & partitions for example, make them all mobile and therefore easily removed. This ensures that you can easily dress it back up as a 4th bedroom once it becomes time for you to sell.

“Fiddle Quilts are helpful as they can calm and reduce anxiety, as well as providing hours of stimulation,” she said.

Studies in care homes have shown that quilts that have embellishments such as zippers, loops, buttons, and laces are beneficial because they can be constantly played with, with different textures to feel, things to open and close to keeping hands busy promoting wellbeing.

The quilts are the size of one’s lap.

While being warm and cosy these handcrafted quilts are also bright and colourful.

THE Port Stephens Community Arts Centre’s quilting group are currently exhibiting alongside a Large Canvas Exhibition.

The quilts on show have been designed to put warmth into your home or bedroom.

Members of the Thursday patchwork group made 5 fiddle quilts to donate to Harbourside Nursing Home.

Meryl Miller told News Of The Area, “Member Sue George presented these quilts to Bill the activities lead at Bill King Aged Care Facility on behalf of our group.

Each quilt seems to have a piece of the makers personality sewn into every seam.

The Arts Centre’s Patchwork Members enjoyed this project knowing that their work will make a difference.

Anyone interested in expressing their creative side should take the time to visit the gallery and see the myriad of different arts and crafts which are created in the space.

From abstracts and acrylic pouring to sculpture, quilling and fish prints there is an opportunity waiting for you.

Admission to the Gallery is free, 10-4pm daily and is located on Cultural Close, off Shoal Bay Road near the Football fields.

Fingal Bay Probus Club offers a variety of activities and events such as attending Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist, however the members often want more.

Members met on a crisp sunny morning recently for an enjoyable Brunch by the Sea? Port Power Shock Singleton

PORT Power have bounced back from a heavy loss at the hands of Terrigal Avoca last week to defeat Singleton 7.1355 to 1.1-7.

The Power were heavily disappointed with their performance against Terrigal and under some clear instructions from coaching staff to be competitive in all facets of the game pulled the

plug on Singleton’s attacking opportunities.

Young gun Ash Craddock opened the scoring for the Power in the first quarter slotting a major as the Power’s forwardline dominated

possession.

Flying Finlay Burnett, Kayle Pennicott and Cheyne Neu chipped in shortly after all hitting it through the middle for majors as the Power surged ahead with confidence.

The Power went into the sheds at the main break with a 32 to 1 lead and from there they were determined not to let the Singleton side back into the match.
