WHEN times are tough and things get tight Australians have a history of standing together.

In Raymond Terrace this is true even in these difficult times, no one wants to see anyone go without food.

Located inside Woolworths at Raymond Terrace is the new bright yellow Lions Parish Pantry Box.

Locals can donate non-perishable items into the box when they shop and these goods will go to locals who are in need.

Unfortunately, there are people in our community who don’t know where their next meal is coming from and the Lions Pantry Box is one way that we can all help those in need make sure that they have a meal on the table for their families.

The Pantry Box is a collaboration between MarketPlace Raymond Terrace, Raymond Terrace Lions Club and St Johns Church.

Mayoral Grant For Street Art Your paper Sanctuary and it is a celebration of this iconic Australian animal.

Sharon Blunt President of the Lions Club of Soldiers Point told News Of The Area, “This was a Mayoral Grant for $3000 which the Mayor kindly approved for us as we missed out on the Cultural Grant but the Mayor felt that the other shelters had been such a community success that he felt that this was important for the Club to continue its work.

THE Lions Club of Soldiers Point has been delivering positive community projects in the region for years.

One of their key fundraisers is the bus shelters which the Club built many years ago and maintains.

Bus shelters while providing functional shelter from blazing sun and driving rain, can be somewhat boring structures.

Not so in the case of the Lions Club Shelters which are being revamped with street art to create landmark must see statements, featuring local fauna and flora.

To date the Club has reinvigorated four shelters with artworks by local artist Rhys Fabris.

There is a stunning lorikeet at Old Salamander Shops, a kookaburra near the netball courts, a wetlands scene at Mambo Wanda Wetlands and now a koala graces a bus shelter at One Mile Beach.

The koala artwork was funded through a Mayoral Grant and the bus shelter will soon feature the contact details for Port Stephens Koalas rescue service.

“Advertising revenue from the shelters comes back into the community and helps the Club to do their work in the community,” she said.

The shelter is not the last on the Lions Club’s list to become a street art statement for the region.

Mayor Ryan Palmer said, “I think it looks magnificent here and it certainly fits in with the area. Tourists from all over

Australia and if we ever get back to international tourists people from all over the world will be able to hop off here and visit the Koala Sanctuary.

“Rhys does such great work with all his artwork across the community, it’s a great partnership between Council, Rhys the artist and Soldiers Point Lions Club,” he said.

q Raymond Terrace Public School Students with their teacher and Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington and Ron Land of Port Stephens Koalas at the presentation of winners cheque and the Grand Champion Artwork to the Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary. an artwork which focuses on a sustainability theme.

Part of the project pairs the school with a community champion and connects them with experts in the community who hold the knowledge, wisdom and experience to assist the students to learn about local projects which are already addressing Australia’s Sustainable Development Goals commitment.

The project supports and empowers young people to cocreate a project that they design, own and deliver either in-school

or out in the community with their intergenerational mentors.

This meets their project intention of the continuance of action on Climate Change as well as addressing their role as future custodians of Worimi lands.

The students recently presented the cheque from Kreative Koalas to Port Stephens Koalas while showcasing the artwork which will sit within the Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary at

One Mile Beach.

The students donated the artwork which is a large fibre glass koala, ‘Mitjigan Guula’ to Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary.

It is their hope that the sculpture will attract donations for the future care of koalas in the region.

Lynne Strong of Kreative Koalas told News Of The Area, “The students chose to align their artwork with the United Nations development goal

of life on the land.

“The students with their mentor created a magnificent artwork that can be used in a public space,” she said.

The artwork celebrates the koala as a species.

Kreative Koalas is a learning program for students which aims to educate, inspire and lead change in the community to address local sustainability issues.

A MAN has been charged after an alleged incident left another man with a punctured lung.

Around 9.20pm on Sunday 22 March, a 48-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman were in a room of a hotel in William Street, Raymond Terrace, when it is alleged a man broke into the room by smashing a window.

It is alleged he threw a piece of glass which struck the 48-yearold in the chest. The 31-year-old man then left the room.

Police were contacted and commenced an investigation. A crime scene was established, and the injured man was taken to John Hunter Hospital with a suspected punctured lung.

At 8.30pm on Monday 23 March, Police found the 31-yearold man in the boot of a car at Raymond Terrace. He was arrested after a short struggle with Police and taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station.

He man was charged with special aggravated break and enter and commit serious indictable offence and resist Police.

The man was refused bail to appear before Raymond Terrace Local Court (Tuesday 24 March 2020).

New Dorin’s Draws cameras have local students excited about being hands-on with photography

PHOTOGRAPHY students at Irrawang High School have been given four more cameras to work with and they can’t wait to get snapping! Two digital cameras and two traditional film cameras were donated by Soldiers Point Marina at Port Stephens who are dedicated to doing their part to create opportunities for young people in the local community.

It comes as part of the marina’s long standing support of the Real Futures Foundation.

“We see potential for the young people of Port Stephens,” says Darrell Barnett of Soldiers Point Marina.

“So we do what we can by supporting the efforts of the Real Futures Foundation to assist them with the transition from education to meaningful employment.”

Irrawang High School photography teacher Grant Wylie says the cameras are a timely acquisition to support his students in their studies.

“Film loaded cameras are becoming quite rare, so having an extra two will certainly assist students who are producing projects using our dark room and film processing” Mr Wylie Said.

“The students will use these to explore units of work that relate to light and shadow, landscape photography and portrait photography.”

The students who study photography at Irrawang High School are creative and independent with their projects.

“They show a mature work ethic and determination to succeed,” Mr Wylie said.

He anticipates that access to the new equipment, coupled with the knowledge that they are supported in their endeavours by the local community, will grow

“When a student realises they are quite talented when holding a camera in their hands, it opens up a completely new realm of possibility for them and they start to see the world visually, in a very different way.”

Mr Wylie said.

Opening local student’s eyes to broader horizons for

their future is a reward in itself for Soldiers Point Marina. For a small, local business, the marina is recognised Australiawide and internationally for excellence in the world of sailing. The management want the young people of Port Stephens to know they have what it takes to do the same in their chosen path.

THERE is no doubt these are uncertain times in Port Stephens and for all Australians, with the recent bushfires and COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic having widespread impacts, and my thoughts go out to anyone who has been affected.

COVID-19 has already had a significant impact on Port Stephens’ local tourism and business communities, many people are taking personal precautions and avoiding spending time out and about. This is an important step in controlling a pandemic, but also means that many places like restaurants, retailers, accommodation providers and popular meeting spots fall quiet.

With a tourism industry worth $621 million to Port Stephens every year, these impacts to our economy and our whole community are significant.

Our recently implemented Port Stephens Business and Tourism Support Fund has allocated up to $500,000 to assist these industries in their recovery from this trying period. Council also has processes to assist ratepayers experiencing financial hardship with the recovery of overdue rates, fees, charges and other debts.

I’m proud of our strong sense of community here in Port Stephens — we look out for the wellbeing of our neighbours, as well as ourselves. An important part of recovering from the challenges of 2020 so far is reaching out to those who might need our help and asking “are you okay?”

It’s also showing our support to businesses who have been hit hardest, so I encourage you to eat and shop local this year and take advantage of everything on our doorstep that makes living and working in Port Stephens so great.

IT is that time of the year when the Probus Clubs celebrate the year that was and the Management committees change-over.

The Probus Club of Port Stephens celebrated their Changeover Lunch was followed by the all important the Annual General Meeting.

David Wilson was appointed for a second term as President and reported on a thriving Club with 157 members which included 27 new inductions in the past year.

Ann Gibson of the Probus Club of Port Stephens told News Of The Area, “He mentioned his gratitude for the support of a hard-working Committee and very conscientious activity leaders of which quite a number have indicated their intention to continue in their roles in 2020/21.

Previous clinics held at Tea Gardens and Medowie have been well attended mherv ‘Men’s Health Education Rural Van’ is a Rotary project.

It is a purpose-built caravan with two consulting rooms which since 2017, has toured through well over 100 centres in NSW, many of them more than once.

It has a full time Registered Nurse who conducts health tests among rural men.

The Men’s Health Education Rural Van (mherv) is out and about in rural New South Wales to save lives.

That sounds a bit dramatic perhaps, but plenty of rural men just drop dead in the paddock, because nobody saw it coming.

Rotary’s mherv project offers a free, ten minute, noninvasive group of tests.

The tests include blood pressure, checking blood sugar levels through a simple pin-prick, and testing for cholesterol levels.

A health check with mherv is completely free.

It is a community service provided by Rotary and our sponsors, particularly the Royal Freemasons’ Benevolent Institution and the Rotary Clubs of New South Wales.

As a result of the program by the end of May 2019... 2,368 people had been tested who were recommended to contact their G.P. to arrange for a

regular medical checkup.

3,136 had been advised to take their test results to their doctor, as there was a specific issue that may need treatment.

164 had been advised to seek medical advice immediately as they were at risk of suffering a serious episode, perhaps a heart attack or stroke.

It is unlikely these people would have sought medical advice without the mherv test and would soon have experienced a potentially life threatening or terminal event.

These lives were probably saved by the project’s efforts.

The van will be located in the rear car park at the Salamander Bay Shopping Centre for the weekend.

Free Men’s Health Check Saving Lives

WHEN it comes to looking after ourselves some men take on the ‘she’ll be right’ attitude.

But sticking one’s head in the sand can lead to health issues getting far worse than they may need to.

When making a cup of tea, should you put the milk in first, or the tea?

Mrs PH, Medowie Dear Mrs PH, I’m not sure who you are, but I think I love you. Here I was thinking the new world order was somewhere between Lord of the Flies and Contagion and yet amongst us are people like you, Mrs PH – in downtown Medowie of all places – making civilised decisions about cups of tea. I can see you there with your fine bone China tea set (cup and saucer, milk jug and sugar bowl) a little tasting plate of Scotch Finger and Monte Carlo biscuits, a polished silver teaspoon, and your Miranda Kerr Friendship teapot adorned with pretty pink peonies. Outside your window are people walloping each other over the head with hand sanitiser and a gentleman using your sprinkler as a bidet and yet there you are, an oasis of calm, your 12-blend Twinings Tea Chest taking pride of place on the kitchen bench and the teddy bear you’ve knitted entirely from reused teabag strings perched next to you. There’s something very reassuring about that image in these uncertain times.

Now, back to the question. Let’s turn to science. Dr Stapley (of Loughborough University, no less, and inspired

by George Orwell which seems appropriate in our current times) determined that putting the milk in last caused uneven heating leading to the proteins denaturing. I have no idea what this means, but it doesn’t sound good. On the other hand, if you use teabags, putting the milk in first will result in a soggy teabag and lessen its efficacy when boiling water is added. In this instance, the milk will need to go in last after the obligatory bag jiggling phase. For purists (and to reduce single-use plastic that is found in many teabags) I would recommend the following: Boil the kettle (preferably one of those stovetop ones that whistle when ready) and fill your Miranda Kerr teapot with hot water to warm it. Arrange your tea set and biscuits.

Empty the pot and add one scoop of tea for each cup and one for the pot (why? I’ve no idea, but it sounds authentic).

Add the hot water and allow it to steep. Now pour the tea into your delicate teacup and add milk and sugar to taste (this will allow you to regulate the colour and strength). Finally, sip quietly, don’t be tempted to dunk your Scotch Finger, and chant a little ‘oasis of calm’ affirmation to block out the loonies beyond your rose garden (and also the ones inside now that you are home schooling during a pandemic).

Local broadcaster and commentator with Bar TV Rugby, Gareth Wasik said that whilst it was a necessary step he would miss the opportunity to call the Gropers this season.

“The Gropers were looking sleek and strong going through the trial matches and I felt this could have been their year,” said Mr Wasik.

“It’s important to ensure the health of all those involved in the game, especially the punters who show up week after week to keep the can bars turning over.”

When asked what it meant for him this season Mr Wasik was optimistic.

“I’ve been taking more money from grassroots rugby in the last few years than rugby Australia, so I should be ok,” said Mr Wasik.

“It’s my voice I’m worried about though.”

By Mitch LEES WITH rugby competitions being cancelled and suspended throughout the world it was only a matter of time before the Newcastle Hunter Rugby Union (NHRU) and Hunter Junior Rugby Union (HJRU) followed suit.

The NHRU has placed a moratorium on the 2020 season with an opportunity to recommence the competition from Saturday, 2 May if the current crisis permits.

In a statement released on Tuesday, 17 March the NHRU announced that, “We’re mindful that this global health emergency is bigger than sport and the health of the communities of Newcastle Hunter region remain our priority.
