Emergency Broadcast Wendy Stein Saves Life Live On Air Whilst Promoting New Humanitarian Book

After just co-releasing a book and doing the media rounds to rally support for the plight of the women of Papua New Guinea as they struggle for basic medical care her services have been called on again.

Mid-way through an interview on Port Stephens FM to discuss the book ‘Rona Stole Our Relief’, Wendy lept into action to help save the life of her interviewer as he went into anaphylaxis.

on air as Wendy sat across from him in the broadcast booth and as luck would have it she was carrying an emergency EpiPen with her.

“I was about to go on the air and the producer said that Paddy was feeling a bit unwell and another presenter would be coming in to take over,” said Wendy.

“At first I thought, I hope he doesn’t have any flu-like symptoms or anything like that, but he was just starting to struggle in his speech and we quickly worked out he was going into anaphylaxis.

Local Businesses Banning Hotspot Travellers In An Attempt To Protect The Local Community FROM Page 1 banned travellers from the Blue Mountains, Albury, Campbelltown LGA (35 suburbs), Liverpool LGA (42 suburbs), and any person holding a Victorian drivers license.

It comes after the recent COVID outbreaks in Greater Sydney have led to people with confirmed cases of the virus travelling to regional holiday destinations in Batemans Bay causing new clusters on the South Coast.

In an online statement Club Lemon Tree said that it was taking the steps to protect the

local Tilligerry community and the wider Port Stephens region before outbreaks could occur here.

“Club Lemon Tree continues to strive for the safety of its staff, members and guests,” said the statement.

“Please help us to keep everyone safe, effective immediately persons from the listed regions will be denied entry to our club.

“The situation will be monitored and updated daily.”

It’s an extraordinary step that has been widely congratulated by the local community via social media and online discussion

groups as the concerns over State Government inaction on intrastate travel escalate.

After recording the biggest spike of COVID cases in three months NSW Health have urged people to avoid non-essential travel, cancel all social gatherings and to self-isolate and get tested if they have visited venues on their confirmed cases list.

At the time of publication it is only precautionary advice and not requirements mandated by the NSW Government.

Katuah and Tea Gardens have also stopped hotspot visitors.

Ross Parr, General Manager of Karuah RSL, said, “We have stopped any visitors or members who live from the Central Coast down through to Victoria from entering the Club.”

“Due to our elderly population, it’s in the town’s best interest to slow the movement of tourists at this point in time,” he said.

“We’re assessing the situation daily and if needed, we will tighten our restrictions even more.”

“I hope all licensed venues in our area follow our lead.”

Greg Acret, General Manager of Hawks Nest Golf Club, said

that he was first alerted to the issue when a woman from a Sydney hotspot had been refused entry into Karuah RSL, and had called to enquire about whether she could enter the Hawks Nest Golf Club.

“We quickly decided that she should not be permitted entry and she was advised accordingly,” he said.

“I commend the management at Karuah RSL for making the original call and, despite there being no official advice from NSW health authorities or Clubs NSW, we believe that restricting entry to visitors from these affected areas in Sydney is absolutely essential if we are to protect our members, and our community more generally, from the spread of COVID-19.”

Mr Acret furthered, “We have been refusing entry to visitors from Victoria for some time now and we see this as an extension of our responsibility to do our best to keep everyone safe.”

Adding to the already incredible scenario Wendy then drove Paddy to the Tomaree Community Hospital to ensure he was treated promptly for the potentially lethal reaction.

“Paddy was going to wait for his wife to come and take him to the hospital but I was having none of that,” said Wendy.

“I bundled him into the car and got him in there to see the docs straight away.

“It was lucky I always carry an EpiPen with me as I too suffer from reactions.”

It’s believed the cause of the episode was some unchecked morning tea that contained the allergens.

This is a stark reminder that those who suffer from anaphylaxis need to always carry their EpiPens in case of any emergency.

Paddy is on the mend and will be back on the local airwaves in no time, even sharing a joke with Wendy that his producer was trying to take him out to gain his spot.

The pen has again been proven mightier than the sword, or perhaps this time, the radio presenter’s word.

Double Lockdown for Port Resident Port Stephens resident David Everingham double lockdown experience

IT was a little hard to recognise Port Stephens resident David Everingham behind the mask on the NBN TV news recently.

Mr Everingham had just disembarked from a flight from Melbourne and was notified that he was to spend the next two weeks in isolation.

It was the second time around for the businessman, who had been caught up in the first round of lockdowns when the NSW – Victorian border was shut due to the COVID 19 pandemic.

Both times he tested negative but the stringent rules insisted that he self isolate.

We asked him what it was like to be housebound for a total of four weeks.

“I was lucky in being able to do much of my work from home,” Mr Everingham said.

Restrictions Reinstated

AS cases of COVID-19 surge to all-time highs in Victoria the NSW Government have reintroduced restrictions around all hospitality venues and events starting tomorrow.

In an attempt to head off the increasing concerns of outbreaks a maximum number of 300 people per venue will be reintroduced with COVID Safe Marshalls enforcing the four-square metre rule.

The restrictions will see group bookings roll back to a 10 person maximum, events capped at 150, and weddings and funerals at a 100 person limit with all guests being required to stay seated.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian has stated that the measures are back in place as the data shows CoronaVirus transmission is prevalent in larger communal areas.

that indoor venues with a high number of people pose the biggest risk,” said Ms Berejiklian.

“Social distancing is the most important measure to combat the spread (of COVID 19).”

It’s advice that hasn’t seemed to flow through to a number of Tomaree Peninsula shopping centres and hospitality venues with reports of overcrowding and congested ques ignoring social distancing requirements.

Port Stephens Mayor, Ryan Palmer, says that while it’s concerning that there have been significant outbreaks across the country the work being carried out locally by authorities has so far kept the community safe.

“I have no doubt that the times ahead will be challenging, but we must recognise the work that has been done to keep us safe here in Port Stephens to date,” said Mr Palmer.

“The key to a steady recovery will be our ability

to stay the course of social distancing and hygiene practices and to adapt as the inevitable challenges arise.”

Port Stephens MP, Kate Washington, has called on the NSW Government to ensure that regional communities that are vulnerable have adequate protections in place.

“If this awful virus takes hold in our community we’re at serious risk of real long-term harm,” said Ms Washington.

“I’ve been contacted by a number of local business owners who are affected by the new restrictions, and they agree, we can’t rebuild our local economy if we don’t have the virus under control.

“It’s up to all of us to continue to be vigilant, maintain social distancing and support our local businesses.

“No-one wants to see the road to recovery take a tragic U-turn as it has in Victoria.”

Shark Awareness Day at Irukandji

SHARKS have a pretty poor reputation but not all of it is well deserved.

Despite recent shark attack deaths in Australian waters we need to remember we are in their space not them in ours.

When you venture into the sea, you are venturing into a realm of wonder of fantasy and of deadly creatures, but it is their home not ours.

From stone fish, jelly fish, sting rays, crocodiles and sharks to killer whales are just a few of the many most deadly creatures on the planet.

Sharks are often maligned and movies like Jaws created a poor image for these majestic and deadly creatures.

Shark Awareness Day 2020 brings us the wonderful news that Irukandji Shark & Ray Encounters is re-opening.

Lia Pereira of Irukandji Shark and Ray Encounters told News Of The Area, “We

are Passionate about marine conservation, Irukandji dedicates many thousands of hours to educating the public about sharks, one of the most misunderstood creatures out there.

“That’s why we need a month or so to come up with the top twenty,” she said.

Ms Mizrachi said, “Each judge gives marks to the stories and we then have a round table discussion to decide which ones are forwarded to the three finalists’ judges.”

points to decide the winners,” she said.

“It’s a long and exhaustive process but we have not come up with anything fairer over the last ten or 15 years the competition has been running,” Ms Mizrachi said.

Dear Mrs RP, I suppose I need to ask how the baker came to know your name. I'm assuming at one stage you both introduced yourselves. He remembered, and you promptly forgot. It is an easy thing to do.

Some people are brilliant at remembering names and others always remember a face.

As a starting point, do you know any other people who frequent the bakery?

Maybe you could ask around. Surely one of them knows this person's name.

Alternatively you could take a friend into the bakery with you and have your friend introduce themselves to the baker while you pretend to be consumed with deciding whether to buy six rum balls or a lamington slab (hint: go with the rum balls). You will then overhear his name.

The next important step is to commit it to memory so you don't forget again. You can do this by associating the name with something. For example if his name is Peter, you can remember his name by coming up with a jingle like: Peter makes particularly pleasant pies.

Of course, if you have an issue remembering the name Peter, perhaps expecting you to retain an entire alliterative sentence is a bit presumptuous.

East Coast Low creates Surfers Paradise

AS another East Coast Low pummelled the Port Stephens coastline last week and played havoc with the overbuilt foreshores of the region, the watermen of the Tomaree Peninsula suited up to tackle the monstrous conditions.

Swells peaked at over six metres with few breaks being able to hold the full fury of the South Pacific as it rolled in.

From Boat Harbour to Fingal Bay all the usually safe swimming nooks were transformed into testing grounds for local surfers who relish the hellish conditions.

One spot just off Barry Park at Fingal saw the prevailing winds cut through the swell enough to groom off a couple of ridable mountains.

Local surfer, Rick Evans and his Novacastrian comrade, Tom Haigh took on the coning conditions early last Thursday morning and photographer Mat Spillard was there to capture the session.

For Rick, growing up in

Shoal Bay at the infamous Box Beach had him ready to tackle anything that mother nature was going to throw his way.

“Tom and I decided to walk up to Fingal Spit on Thursday morning to get a few uncrowded waves in between business calls,” said Rick.

“We ended up paddling out at Fingal Point where there were some big waves around, I was lucky enough to catch a few and get out of there.

“Some guys were catching bigger ones on the Wednesday!”

As Rick took off on the featured bomb, Tom charged over the set and looked on as his mate rode it all the way to the Fingal Beach Surf Life Saving Club.

“It was nuts, Rick pretty much ended up at the Surf Club from out past Kiddies Corner,” said Tom. “I guess he thought he was going to get in early to hit the bench press in the Sheer Grit clubby gym, the guy is a beast!”

Probus Sees Seniors Engaged

IT was a successful meeting, albeit a little subdued with member numbers a little over 50% of the membership.

Kevin Tomlinson told News Of The Area, “Members were following Covid-19 protocols and maintaining social distancing was paramount - all members were all fully aware and respected the requirements.”

By Mitch LEES THE Port Stephens District Bodyboarders (PSDB) held their second competition of the year in some solid conditions at Box Beach on Sunday that saw a return to the glory days of foam riding in the region.

With the swell holding firm around the four foot mark the crew were treated to an ideal day as the sun and winds came to the party.

PSDB President, Chad Pisani was more than happy with what the sea gods had laid out for the boogers as a large field contested the COVID Safe event.

“We had some tricky conditions to start the day with the swell really pulsing in,” said Chad.

“It was a great turn out and as the waves dropped a little throughout the day it became highly contestable with all the competitors ripping!”
