ANZAC Day Driveway Commemorations

THIS year marks a very different ANZAC Day. One which will be extremely painful for many, as the traditional Commemorations are put on hold.

Once more our Service men and women and their families will make a sacrifice for their country, this time, one which will save lives in a very different way.

By staying home and maintaining social distance instead of turning out to March and commemorate the Service of our ANZAC’s it is hoped that we will continue to flatten the COVID-19 curve here in Australia.

Many will struggle as ANZAC Day takes on a new form, in what has become the new norm.

The community is being called

Local angler and can-bar enthusiast James Eaton said it was necessary for the ramps

to close but welcomed the news of the reopening for the fishermen of Port Stephens who’ve been landlocked the last few weeks.

“Closing the boat ramps was a no brainer to keep the kooks off the water for the Easter period,” said Mr Eaton.

“My deep freezer has taken a heavy hit over the last month or so but I’m looking forward to loading up some weight and getting amongst the wash to get a decent feed in.”

Council have also reminded residents that they can still only leave home with a reasonable excuse and must obey social distancing measures.

“I can think of nothing more reasonable than having a

RSL NSW is working with the NSW Government to plan an alternative Commemoration that can be televised to members.

Boat Ramps To Reopen For Anglers

Local boaties are all smiles after Port Stephens Council have moved to reopen boat ramps on Monday, 27 April for resident anglers only.

The reopening comes after Council closed boat ramps to all watercraft except for essential services as fears mounted that tourists would crowd waterways over the Easter break and put unnecessary pressure on emergency personnel.

In an online statement Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer said that after consultation with relevant stakeholders it would be safe to reopen ramps

This is to ensure the ANZAC traditions and solemn recognition of Service can be appropriately observed.

AFTER receiving numerous reports of people ignoring the lockdown laws in relation to Port Stephens Council’s boat ramps and fish cleaning tables, Cr Steve Tucker reminds residents of the regulations and the penalties involved.

“These strict laws were introduced to keep ‘outsiders’ from bringing the COVID -19 virus into Tilligerry,” he said.

“They worked, as only one case has been reported on the peninsula,” he explained.

“We couldn’t have one rule for visitors and another for locals,” he said.

“Council, in its wisdom, will be relaxing the ramp rules after the holiday period on 27 April for residents only.” Cr Tucker said.

“If you are a local and use the ramp after 27th make sure you carry ID and both your driver’s and boat licence.

Water police and fisheries will be out on the water checking all details.”

“Report any illegal activity to Crime Stoppers and this information will be forwarded to local police to check out,” Cr Tucker said.

“After inspecting the facilities at Henderson Park I was appalled that the ‘Ramp Closed’ sign had been torn down and people had removed the mesh from the cleaning table. Not only that, they didn’t clean the facility and left scales and mess everywhere.” he concluded.

Artists Weekly Challenge

PORT Stephens Community Arts Centre’s Artists have made the shift to remote mode from self-isolation to keep our community active.

Painters from the Community Arts Centre in Nelson Bay have got even more creative than usual to cope with the COVID-19 lockdown.

Member Nikki Waters explained: “With the Arts Centre temporarily closed, many of our artist members are participating in a weekly ‘Art Challenge’.” she said “We send out a reference photo and ask participants to paint a variation on this theme in a medium of their choice – e.g. watercolour, acrylic, pastel, ink etc.”

The first week saw more than 15 entries and the second

IRRAWANG High School teachers have been boosting their student’s morale during the pandemic, along with the wider school community.

A group of teachers from the Science, Maths and

week already has more than 28 participants.

With the number growing to 40 entries for week 3.

Some members have even submitted multiple versions depicted in different mediums.

“Weekly, completed entries are posted on our Facebook page, and a compilation of all entries in thumbnail format are sent to all participants by email” said Nikki Waters.

Members have welcomed the ‘Art challenge’ as one way of filling their time at home while they are minimising their social interactions.

Participants have reacted very positively to this challenge.

Members who usually participate in different crafts like Pottery and Fusion have also been getting into the weekly challenge.

Some of the comments from members about the weekly challenge have been,“How lucky are we having you thinking ahead and arranging this opportunity; I have just been looking around to paint something but now I have some purpose; Keeping sanity levels and “It’s good to challenge our old brains with new things!”

Any member of the Community Arts Centre is welcome to take part in the weekly challenge,” said Nikki Waters.

English Departments decided to dress-up to a theme each day and the results have been hilarious.

One of the teachers involved, Taylor Ross, told News Of The Area, “The dress up resulted by us wanting to brighten everyone’s day during this stressful time.”

“A group of us from Science, Mathematics and English just wanted to have a laugh.”

They have certainly achieved their goal with the photographs being shared via the high school’s Facebook page.

It was fast becoming a

guessing game of what will they do next each morning.

Taylor added, “As for how we came up with ideas, it was basically anything we

thought was funny and all of us had access to at home.”

“It puts a smile on our faces every day and we’re really happy to see that we’ve been able to do the same for the wider community.”

When Term 2 commences in a week or so there will be some eager students, teachers and parents to see what the group have come up with over the holidays.

Taxi Driver Raises Alarm

A BOY has been cautioned over a coughing incident at Nelson Bay last week.

Just before 2pm (Sunday 12 April 2020), a 73-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman were walking along Victoria Parade, Nelson Bay, and as they approached the pedestrian crossing, a white Nissan Navara slowed and pulled up beside them.

Police have been told that a boy leaned his head and shoulders out of the passenger window and coughed over the couple.

He and the other occupants in the vehicle started laughing before the vehicle drove off.

The couple contacted police and officers from the Port Stephens/Hunter Police District commenced an investigation.

Following an investigation, a 16-year-old boy attended Ryde Police Station and he will be issued a caution under the Young Offenders Act. Two other occupants of the car have been issued warnings for breaching the Health Minister’s Direction.

Ms NM, Raymond Terrace Dear Ms NM, THIS sounds quite romantic. A tragedy of Shakespearian proportions has beset Raymond Terrace. We have the Capulet family from Aphrasia Way and the Montagues from Jacaranda Avenue, foes since a long-ago misdemeanour when Roger Capulet reversed his Toyota Hilux into Peter Montague’s Kia in the Aldi carpark.

And yet, with the odds against them, Nadia Montague’s captivating smile entranced Nathan Capulet after she served him a chicken schnitzel with Dianne sauce at the Junction Inn Hotel.

Since then they have been sneaking out to the movies and holding hands at the local food court, but now all hell has descended and both are locked in their respective homes, desperately trying to escape under the guise of buying toilet paper or doing personal training sessions in the park, or checking up on the progress of their Job Keeper payment, all under the watchful eye of the local law enforcers who have received advanced training in ‘Teenage Shenanigans during COVID-19’.

What will become of the Montagues and the Capulets of Raymond Terrace?

I fear a fateful end to this harrowing tale of unrealised passion and subterfuge.

Nathan will perhaps spot Nadia motionless in the local park and, thinking she has tried to take her own life, he will attempt to resuscitate her, only to be pounced on and handcuffed by Constable Tybalt for not observing social distancing rules.

Alas, Nadia had simply been trying to meditate away the 5G radiation (sub plot involving Louella the local yogi, whale whisperer and conspiracy theorist).

Nathan struggles, but he is no match for Constable Tybalt who locks him away in a shared cell where Nathan is now in far closer proximity to human touch than he has been in a long time (unfortunately this time it is with Rodrigo who has a teardrop tattoo, a hacking cough and night sweats).

Meanwhile, bored out of her brain, Nadia takes up gaming and progresses from playing Grand Theft Auto to being headhunted by the Federal Government as a software design trouble shooter.

She is put on the Corona tracking app taskforce but true to her undying devotion for Nathan, she corrupts the software and inserts a complex unencrypting system that divulges the GPS co-ordinates of every public servant at any given time of day or night.

I hope you all had a relaxing Easter with your families. It was very different for my family, staying home and not visiting our extended family, but it’s the safest thing we can do during the COVID-19 pandemic.

I know it’s been tough on everyone — with many people not being able to work, see their loved ones, or do the things they enjoy.

To help make life easier during these challenging times, I announced a COVID-19 Recovery Response with a list of measures to see us all through the response, recovery and restart of our Port Stephens economy.

I have listened to many of you and understand your frustration around suspending green waste drop off days.

That’s why we’re investigating allowing one extra green waste kerbside collection between now and 30 June 2021.

Thanks to your efforts to uphold social distancing, especially over Easter, we’re working with Emergency Services to investigate reopening our boat ramps to local residents from 27 April 2020.

The response package also called on the State and Federal Governments to assist local government in providing essential services during the pandemic.

While some projects may have to be slightly scaled back or deferred, Port Stephens is continuing to move ahead with works on the Nelson Bay Road and Lemon Tree Passage Road roundabout, Anna Bay pathway and Robinson Reserve.

As I have mentioned before, our community spirit here is second to none.

We need to stay connected and stay strong now more than ever — be it through social media or other digital channels.

AFL Youth Leadership Program WHILST we can’t play in this current situation, AFL NSWACT has designed a program to improve its junior’s leadership skills on and off the field.

The AFL Future Leaders Community Program is a youth leadership program which will be delivered by the Institute of Sport.

Earlier this month junior players were asked to nominate themselves to participate and 180 were selected from NSW and ACT. During the April School Holidays those selected from the nomination process will complete online modules and participate in video conferencing workshops based around leadership styles, personal brand and leading through communication.

Several local AFL players have

been successful in their nominations, including Zac Ruhl, Madison Jewell and Noah McKimm.

Noah McKimm, 12 years old, from Port Stephens Power AFL Club told News Of The Area, “It was exciting when I got selected, my leadership goals in AFL are to captain a team to a premiership.”

Once they have completed the program and play resumes, the participants are expected to take on a leadership role within their club including umpiring, coaching or assisting with the NAB AFL Auskickers.

Zac Ruhl, also from port Stephens Power based in Medowie, said, “I appreciate the opportunity to learn about leadership, I hope to help the footy club out as a coach and umpire, as well as work in the community with these new skills.”

Nelson Bay Rugby Club Scores $200K

WHILE playing rugby is off the cards at club level for sometime Nelson Bay Rugby Club still has something to celebrate.

The club has secured a $200,000 grant from the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund to upgrade club facilities at Nelson Bay Rugby Club in Port Stephens.

MLC for Port Stephens Ms Cusack congratulated NBRC (Nelson Bay Rugby Club) on securing the funding which will enable the club to add an additional dressing shed for females, furthering the club’s efforts to increase female participation.

The upgrade will also include building an all-access ramp to the existing clubhouse, moving an existing storage facility and converting an unused canteen space into a dedicated Referee’s room with shower and toilet facilities.

“Nelson Bay Rugby Club is the largest junior club in the Newcastle and Hunter zone with a team in every division from Under 8s to Under 18s.

“This funding will enable the club to continue its work in diversification and inclusiveness and to help make this club, its field and the amenities, one of the best in the region for all to enjoy,” Ms Cusack said.

NBRC President Ray Milton welcomed the funding and thanked the NSW Government along with Port Stephens Council for their support.

“NBRC is the only premier sporting club in all of Port Stephens and this grant will go a long way to show how important our club is to the residents and visitors

of the Tomaree Peninsula,” Mr Milton said.

The club has one senior and three junior female teams.

“Port Stephens Council is also helping out with planned upgrades to irrigation and the surface of the field.

Mayor Ryan Palmer was thrilled to hear of the successful funding application and said NBRC was a vital asset for his local community.
