RAYMOND Terrace and Tomaree Community Libraries will host author Steve Matthews at a free event to discuss his new novel about domestic violence on Thursday 27 June.

Based on true events, ‘The Skinny Girl’ is a thought-provoking novel about a victim of emotional abuse, how attitudes, values and culture contribute to abuse, and the path to change.

Author Steve Matthews says the novel shines a light on domestic violence.

“The story is not just about abuse; it is as much to do with a woman’s emotional strength, courage and empowerment,” Mr Matthews added.

A MAN has been charged with several drug offences after his home was the target of a home invasion in Port Stephens.

About 2am last Wednesday (12 June 2019), a 23-year-old man was at a home on Ocean Avenue, Anna Bay when he was woken by five unknown males.

One of the men allegedly assaulted the 23-yearold occupant, while the others began stealing items.

Police believe that a number of items including drugs, cash and a television were stolen from the premises during the offence.

The men then fled the scene believed to be in a vehicle.

The occupant was taken to Tomaree Hospital for treatment to lacerations to his head, when police were contacted.

Officers attached to Port Stephens-Hunter Police District attended the hospital and spoke with the man.

Police then attended the home on Ocean Avenue and established a crime scene.

During a search, police allegedly located cannabis, MDMA, ketamine, amphetamine, LSD, magic mushrooms and other substances believed to be illicit drugs.

The occupant was arrested upon his release from the hospital and was taken to Nelson Bay Police Station.

He was charged with possess prohibited drug (x11), supply prohibited drug (x3) and goods in custody.

He was refused bail and appeared at Raymond Terrace Local Court the next day (Thursday 13 June 2019).

Detectives from Port Stephens-Hunter Police District are continuing to investigate the home invasion incident.

PBL Award Recipients

PBL is a program which recognises Positive Behaviour and Learning.

Each week students from nine schools are recognised for their behaviour and citizenship at MarketPlace Raymond Terrace.

This weeks award recipients were all well deserving of recognition for

their various contributions to our community.

Hamish Witcomb of Seaham Public School received his award for his manners and behaviour when another school visited for a debating competition.

Salt Ash Public School’s Aleisha Hockey has a great attitude and is always encouraging others to do their best.

Marlie Johnson of Medowie Public School was awarded because she shows wonderful empathy towards others.

Leilana Latu showed her honesty and concern for others when she handed in a piece of lost jewellery which was later returned to its owner.

Nate Piening of Grahamstown Public School cares for the schools chickens and they are always well fed;

he also volunteers to help out in the school canteen.

Hunter River High’s Bethany Sarginson helped out in the canteen on election day where her efforts raised money for a local school.

Ellie Ping of Irrawang

High School was nominated by MarketPlace Raymond Terrace for helping out at the PBL presentations.

Kyzaiah Sing attends the out of school homework centre and always tries his best and is respectful helpful and shows pride in his community.

Irrawang Public School’s Ivy Brewer-Dunn helped out on election day and raised over

$1000 for the school.

Jupiter Youth Mental Health Fundraiser

THE youth of Port Stephens has a space to talk and to find help at Jupiter.

Jupiter, which was designed specifically for Port Stephens youth aged 12 – 18 offers a free counselling service.

In order to keep the service free, Jupiter needs the help of local businesses and community.

Geoffrey Basser Vice President of COPSY the overseeing board of Jupiter told News Of The Area, “We are so honoured that the Rick Stein Restaurant at Bannisters, Port Stephens have gone out of their way to be proud supporters of Jupiter.”

Goanna the Talk of Tomaree

OVER the years there has been many weirdly outrageous happenings reported on the Tomaree Peninsula.

Rumours of UFOs over Yacaaba, ghostly apparitions spotted at Mrs Murphy’s gap and the time Yahoo Serious levitated across Zenith Beach after a night out when here filming the iconic ‘Reckless Kelly’ movie.

All those pale in comparison however with the tale of Gary the talking Goanna and his place of residency at the gun emplacements on Tomaree Headland.

According to Jenelle Langham, a frequent walking trail enthusiast of Tomaree National Park, Gary is the descendant of a war time monitor lizard that befriended a stationed digger here in the 1940s.

“My youngest grandson and I were blazing a trail around one of our favourite walks to the gun battery on Tomaree when we heard a faint voice coming from the scrub nearby,” said Mrs Langham.

“To our surprise all we could see was this Goanna sitting up staring our way,” “I’ve heard rumours that a lonely digger taught Gary’s grandfather to speak with enticements of rationed spam and a good cheese.”

It’s believed that Gary acquired his language skills from his grandfather who

passed the english tongue on through the generations of Tomaree Headland Goannas.

“I know how this seems but stranger things have happened in this town,” said Mrs Langham.

News Of The Area was unable to reach Gary for comment at the time of publication.

The way we behave in public and private is worlds apart, and it is often only when you have someone sharing a home with you, that you discover their unusual habits and the real reason they need a private rental instead of approaching an estate agent.

To start off, everything is rose coloured.

You draw up a meal plan, share grocery shopping and take turns cleaning wet areas.

The equilibrium can’t stay that way. It never does. Resentments build and soon you are wondering how to get rid of them.

I once shared a house with a couple who the private landlord thought would be ‘my type of people’. We had half a house each, but the dividing wall was not enough to separate us. I could hear them and, after a few weeks, I could smell them. They were very, let’s say, passionate. Port Power to analyse game after massive loss SPORTS

PORT Stephens Power have had the wind knocked out of their sails after succumbing to a strong Terrigal Avoca Panthers outfit on the weekend going down 142 to 2.

The Power were quietly confident approaching the fixture welcoming back Leaf Wade, a founding member of the club, who had been out of action since last year with an ACL tear.

Josie Jones from Port Power said it was great to have Leaf back in action for her beloved football club and the whole team were all behind her in her recovery.

“Leaf has been the lynchpin for our club,” said Ms Jones “She has been our

ground manager, water runner, goal umpire and head cheerleader whilst she’s been on the mend,” “To see her back playing the game she loves was phenomenal!”

Terrigal Avoca were all

class in their playing style moving the ball around the park with a high level of skill and confidence that allowed them to score with ease.

The Power were down 58 points at the half and

there was no coming back from that position.

Chey Neu and pocket rocket Kayla Pennicott were able to run away in the fourth quarter for open shots on goal but could only manage a couple of behinds.

The game was televised on Bar TV which Ms Jones says will give the Power a valuable opportunity to analyse the match and make some needed improvements.

“We can look back over the performance and learn from it and work on our structures,” said Ms Jones.

The Power play Singleton at home this Saturday at Ferodale Oval, Medowie. Kick-off is at 12pm.

THE Port Stephens branch of the WESTPAC Rescue Helicopter volunteers are busy fundraising.

It is when times are at their worst that the service kicks into gear.

They rescue surfers, rock fishermen, attend motor vehicle accidents, transport patients with critical medical conditions and more.

Graham Nickisson or Nikko, was a member of the air crew on the WESTPAC Rescue Helicopter for 38 years.

He told New Of The Area, “I have attended all the major events in the region over the years the Newcastle Earthquake, the Kempsey Bus Crash and the Pasha Balker.”

In October 2018 Graham transferred to the marketing section of the WESTPAC Rescue Helicopter service.

“I have a real passion for the volunteers and what people do to keep the service in the air.”

Graham finds the communities efforts very humbling.

“I work for the community and meet fantastic people.”

He has a healthy respect for the unsung heroes behind the service.

“We all wear the same badge, the helicopter is the pointy end, and people don’t understand that these wonderful people keep the

helicopter in the air.

“The flight engineers keep the four helicopters in the air, working around the clock to make it safe for the crew to do their jobs,” he said.

Graham is a huge advocate for safety in all things, and is passionate about the introduction of life jackets and safety of rock fishermen after having attended many search and rescues’ off the rocks.

If you would like to volunteer within the WESTPAC Rescue Helicopter Service the volunteers in Port Stephens and the Mid North Coast would welcome you.

TOMAREE Oval played host to a celebration of rugby on the peninsula with the Nelson Bay Gropers hosting a hard nosed Singleton Bulls outfit for the annual Ladies Day fixture.

All levels of Nelson Bay rugby from the juniors to the senior men were on display whilst the hard working women that hold the club together were recognised for their support that bring each fixture together.

The Gropers held strong to contain a fortified Singleton team that refuse to simply make up the numbers in the NHRU with a 39 to 24 victory.

Stoic frontrower and player-coach Ben Whaler crossed early with zippy back Emerson Burgess not far behind to give the Gropers a 10 point lead before the Bulls’ CONTINUED Page 14
