WOMEN deliver community on a different level and this is no exception in Port Stephens where a unique women’s group has come together to support women going through treatment for breast cancer.

The Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group was formed at the beginning of the century to meet the needs of women in the region that were sadly not being met.

This year the Port Stephens Woman of the Year is Taurie Lalor who has served as President of the Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Services for 10 years.

The local `grass roots’ group is self-funded and provides assistance to residents on the Tomaree Peninsula who are Breast Cancer patients.

All of the groups’ services are provided free to the patients; all costs are covered via our fundraising and generous donations from local businesses and residents.

The Federal Government has announced a stimulus package.

They will deliver an injection of $11 billion into the National economy before July 2020.

Key to this package is a one off payment of $750 for pensioners and other welfare recipients.

The hope is that these individuals will spend these funds in their local economies providing a much needed boost for business.

On the plus side Port Stephens pensioners will have additional dollars to spend locally.

The NSW Government is also planning a stimulus package and more locally Port Stephens Council has announced a $500,000 package for tourism businesses.

Chamber Supporting Business Through Uncertain Times

It is ready to support businesses as they face uncertain times due to the potential threat posed by the Coronavirus.

The country has gone into lockdown with all people entering the country being placed into a 14 day self isolation following the example set by New Zealand.

Cruise ships are also banned for a period of at least one month.

This is new territory for Australia.

Everyone is susceptible to the virus as there is no vaccination and no herd immunity.

Social distancing is the new norm.

For the foreseeable future, we won’t be shaking hands, we will be keeping a metre and a half distance for others and, as we go into winter and we won’t be holding mass gatherings.

Slowing the spread of the virus frees up crucial beds in intensive care.

Council announces support for Tourism Council’s Press Release

THE embattled Port Stephens tourism and business sectors are breathing a little easier today after Council last night endorsed up to $500,000 funding for initiatives to support these industries which have taken an economic hit in the wake of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

In a Notice of Motion brought forward by Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer, Council endorsed the Port Stephens Tourism and Business Support Fund, which pledges to allocate up to $500,000 from the Holiday Parks and Property Reserves.

Council acknowledged that local tourism and business communities are being greatly affected by the worldwide spread of coronavirus and the virus’s unfolding impacts will have a significant effect on the broader economy.

“The tourism industry is worth $621 million to Port Stephens every year and it is estimated that up to 20% of the workforce could be lost over the next 12 months,” Mayor Palmer said.

“The impact the coronavirus will have on the Port Stephens economy and our whole community is significant. The Port Stephens Tourism and Business Support Fund will allow Council to respond with agility during this volatile time to provide support to these industries as they need it.

“We’ll work with Destination Port Stephens to support and fund destination marketing. We’ll also work in partnership with the business community to implement additional strategies required to reduce the impact of this unfolding crisis.” Mayor Palmer said.

Destination Port Stephens (DPS) Chairman Andrew Macdonald has backed Council’s decision.

“The announcement of the $500,000 fund by Port Stephens Council is decisive,

timely and much needed support for the local tourism and hospitality industry, which is being impacted significantly by decreased visitation due to coronavirus,” he said.

“DPS has recently developed new marketing material which is ready to launch, and access to marketing funds would dramatically enhance our ability to maintain visitation to the region, with the aim to protect businesses, jobs and our local economy,” said Mr Macdonald.

The resolution also committed to an increased investment in attracting and supporting events in Port Stephens.

“We will actively pursue Government grants available to support the tourism industry now and into the future,” Mayor Palmer said.

Clontarf Academy Helping The Community

IRRAWANG High School’s Clontarf Academy students have been busy helping out in the community so far this year.

One week they have been seen picking up rubbish along the riverbank in Raymond Terrace and then the next week they were helping out in the kitchen at the Soul Café in Newcastle.

The boys prepared and served meals at lunchtime to those less fortunate who need a meal and a safe place.

Both of these activities were about the boys giving back and taking pride in their community.

The boys really enjoyed taking part in the activities and are looking forward to venturing out throughout the year to get further involved in other community events.

Student Antwone Ryan told News Of The Area, “I enjoy being out doing stuff for the community.”

Foundation set up in her memory “NOT a day passes when we don’t think of her.” This is how Tanilba’s Helen and Dennis Smith reacted

when asked about their late daughter-in-law.

The renowned consultant and head of

cardiology at The Mater Hospital passed away recently. She had fallen victim to motor neurone

disease (MND) and was just 45 years of age. Currently, there is no known cure for this devastating condition.

Colleagues gave tribute Dr Worthington’s dedication describing her as passionate, enthusiastic and empathetic and as a practitioner who inspired her patients with

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and by doing so equips them to participate more meaningfully in society.

It follows the six pillars of Clontarf in the core areas her holistic approach.

The family was overwhelmed at the outpouring of emotion after news of her passing spread. This came from colleagues and former patients alike.

A foundation to assist with MND research was set up in her memory and contributions now sit at some $63,000 with

THE TINY HOUSE MOVEMENT “I’m seeing an increase in promotion for tiny houses. Do you think the tiny house movement will be here long term and if so, what will it do to property prices?”

WE’VE embraced all things American and the Tiny House movement is no exception! It’s definitely increasing in popularity across all market segments with manufacturers springing up nationwide; several in NSW. As housing affordability bites, the popularity of this movement increases exponentially. Big houses consume big energy and expel big waste so the movement also responds to environmental issues as we try to reduce our footprint. Tiny Houses assist young people gain a property market foothold and if on wheels on existing properties present excellent market entry options. Downsizers and those seeking a simpler lifestyle are becoming devotees and of course investors/B&B operators are reaping the benefits of holiday/rental income.

Overall, the benefits of this movement outweigh any negatives - more people in the housing market, greater output in the building industry and an increase in sales of vacant land. While Tiny Houses are becoming increasingly sophisticated, they aren’t for everyone, regardless of whether the family is small or big. I can’t see them superseding traditional housing any time soon but they have an increasingly important role to play in the housing market, our efforts to downsize our ‘stuff’ and reduce our environmental footprint.

Domestic Tourism Steady For Now

WHILST the inbound tourism sector of Port Stephens is left reeling from the effects of COVID-19, domestic based tourism is still proving a strong economic driver in some areas.

Local cafes and short-stay accommodation on the Tomaree Peninsula have yet to feel the pinch of the pandemic and are reporting that it’s business as usual as holidaymakers are staying closer to home.

Mel Vassalio from The Home Interior, Nelson Bay said that the usual downturn in postsummer trade has yet to hit and that it’s not all doom and gloom.

“We’ve been really busy for this time of year, especially with having some fairly lousy weekend weather,” said Ms Vassalio.

“It seems as if a lot of people have perhaps changed travel plans and are deciding it’s safer to holiday not too far away at the moment.”

With Chinese and South Korean travellers still restricted from Australian shores due to the virus the Port Stephens Tourist Information Centre is still reporting “very busy weekends” leading into the NSW school holidays.

Dear Mr SL, AS I write this I have just finished reading that Australia’s chief medical officer has not discounted options such as lock downs in major cities. While this may seem extreme, when you look at some of the madness that has inflicted our nation recently, harsh times may call for harsh measures.

Take the humble toilet roll. Never has such a seemingly innocent item been put so far out of proportion in terms of its value. Aussies are going absolutely berserk over the stuff. Meanwhile my local farmgrown fruit and veggie stall had just one customer yesterday afternoon – me. The herd mentality is frightening because it is completely illogical, and so steps need to be put in place to protect the rest of us.

The other problem I have observed is the callous indifference of people towards others in more alarming ways. I think many of us have seen the video of a woman openly coughing in front of a man who dared to suggest she cover her mouth. I just had the same thing happen in my home.

A man I don’t know, who had known me for 10 minutes, coughed without covering his mouth at my breakfast bar as he was saying Corona wasn’t an issue for ‘people like me’. The thing is, how does he know, from a cursory glance, what my health is like? How do any of us know whose health is compromised in some way in our communities? Or who goes home to the sick or the elderly – those four percenters who seem to have been classified, if you are to believe the media – as collateral damage.

So it is great, Mr SL, that you are young and healthy, but I do think we all need to show consideration for those who may not be so lucky.

For many years women have been seeking equality, better rights, equal pay, and the access to opportunities that men have.

Unfortunately we are still on a journey towards equality: that’s why International Women’s Day is so important.

Women in some Nations are worse off than the women here, however we still do not have equality.

This year Member for Paterson Meryl Swanson and Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington hosted an International Women’s Day event to celebrate all that we have achieved and to support women in our community.

230 women and a few men attended the event which was held at Murrook Cultural Centre at Williamtown.

Meryl Swanson, Member for Paterson told News Of The Area, “This year’s theme for International Women’s Day is ‘Each for Equal: Working towards a gender equal world’.

“In my job as the Federal representative for the electorate of Paterson, I witness and meet many hardworking, passionate and powerful women making a difference - in Parliament and in our community.

“Their knowledge, drive and dedication to their given field is unparalleled.

“But I also see women who are disadvantaged by illness, poverty and mental health.

“Unbelievably, older women are the fastest growing number of Australians experiencing homelessness and one woman a week is still dying at the hands of a current or former partner. “While we celebrate the achievements of women in Australia, we also recognise there is still a long way to go.

“On International Women’s Day, we stand in solidarity to empower and support our mothers, sisters, daughters and friends, working toward a gender equal world,” she said.

Parliament is just one place where women are underrepresented and it is not that long ago that our Minister for Women was a man.

Clearly there is more to do; women retire with less superannuation, are paid less for doing the same job and are often thrown into the role of carer for not only their own families but their extended families as well.

Interestingly, the youth representatives at the event, answering panel questions were nearly all inspired by their parents, particularly their mums.

The event raised funds which will support groups that help women around the region including the Yacaaba Centre which assists women living under the shadow of domestic violence.

A chilling reminder of the need for change in this for women as the event coincided with the Memorial Service for Hannah Baxter who was murdered in an act of domestic violence in Brisbane, alongside her three children by her estranged partner.

Upgrade of Nelson Bay Road from Williamtown to Bobs Farm

RESIDENTS, landowners and businesses will help shape changes to the upgrade of Nelson Bay Road from Williamtown to Bobs Farm, following recent community consultation.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Catherine Cusack said Transport for NSW sought comments from the community and stakeholders on the proposed route options for the project in September 2019.

“Potential route options include following the current alignment and building a new

road along a different alignment,” Ms Cusack said.

“Transport for NSW will now explore other route options suggested by the community, and will go back out to the community with another Have Your Say in mid-2020.”

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said the upgrade would change the way motorists move in and around the Hunter region.

Result for Charity Nelson Bay Golf Club

MEDOWIE and surrounds showed their generosity in abundance over the Christmas period, proving that the spirit of Christmas is alive and well.

Resident Trevor Wimmer put on an outstanding light and sound display on his Ferodale Road property, asking for donations to charities in return.

A total of $2214.00 was collected over the six week period, which was split between two charities.

The Royal Flying Doctors Service and Angel Flight both received $1107.00 each.

Trevor told News Of The Area, “I would like to thank everyone who got behind this and donated so generously.”

“The best part was the look on everyone’s faces, especially the children, when they saw the lights.”

Young Triathlete Shows Future Potential

2019.

Runaway Bay was an amazing experience for a 15 year old Junior competing against the best triathletes from around Australia in the under 19 age group.

He was the overall winner of the Enticer Event at the Sparke Helmore Newcastle City Triathlon.

The Enticer Event consists of a 300m swim, 12km cycle and 2.5km run.

15-year old Cooper is in Year 11 at St Philip’s Christian College, Newcastle and is a member of the Hunter Academy of Sport Triathlon Squad.

The Academy program is designed to assist young athlete’s development so that they progress further in their sport.

Cooper spoke to News Of The Area and said, “Many thanks to Nicky Western, the Hunter Academy Triathlon Coach for her amazing support.”

Cooper, who has been competing in triathlon for the past four years currently trains 10 sessions per week (4 swimming, 3 Bike and 3 running).

Keep an eye out for this youngster over the coming years.

MEDOWIE athlete Cooper Lee has had plenty of success recently on the triathlon circuit.

Cooper placed third at the NSW All Schools Triathlon at Penrith Lakes in the boys intermediate division.

He has been selected on the NSW team for the School Sport Australia National Championships which are being held in Hervey Bay, Queensland at the end of March.
