New digital wayfinding sign PORT Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer last week unveiled a new digital wayfinding sign on the corner of Magnus and Yacaaba Streets in Nelson Bay. A joint project between Council and the Rotary Club of Nelson Bay, the wayfinding sign forms part of the Nelson Bay Public Domain Plan.

Mayor Palmer said wayfinding signage aimed to make moving through town centres easier and more accessible for everyone.

“This is the first digital wayfinding sign in Port Stephens and others will follow suit into the future,” Mayor Palmer said.

“We want to make it easy for people who are coming to visit to move throughout

Twilight Christmas Cheer For Bay CBD

IF you find yourself wondering if you’ve strolled onto the set of National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, when making your way through the Nelson Bay CBD this Festive Season don’t be alarmed.

The town centre has been given some extra Christmas flare in anticipation for the Festive

Season courtesy of the Tomaree Business Chamber with support from the Port Stephens Council.

Along with the new decorative lighting pieces, twilight shopping nights have also kicked-off with the first running last Thursday and the next to be held tonight.

Peter Clough from the Tomaree Business Chamber said that the nights were about driving visitation into the town centre

and boosting the holiday cheer for locals and visitors.

“The Chamber has worked alongside Council to liven up the CBD for Christmas and hopefully help those local businesses with bigger crowds around town,” said Mr Clough.

“Participating businesses are open to 7pm each Thursday and there’s plenty of street entertainment to keep shoppers

and spectators happy.”

Shoppers will also have the chance to take home up to $1000 in gift vouchers at participating outlets for a shopping spree.

$1.3M modern sports facility at Lionel Morten Oval

WORKS are officially underway to construct a new $1.3 million modern sports facility at Karuah’s Lionel Morten Oval to replace the old Clubhouse.

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer says Lionel Morten Oval is a community asset that deserves more.

“We’ve already demolished the old, cramped Clubhouse and now we’re getting to work constructing a modern purpose-built facility,” Mayor Palmer said.

Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie says it’s a wonderful outcome for the community of Karuah.

“Local players of both sports have talked to me about the need for upgraded facilities at the oval and I’m delighted we have been able

to secure Federal funding to help get this project over the line,” Dr Gillespie said.

This project is being funded by Port Stephens Council ($750,000), the Australian Government’s Move It Aus fund ($500,000) and the Australian Cricket Infrastructure Fund ($50,000).

The new building is expected to be ready for the 2020 winter sport season.

Vinnies not only provides hampers for families during this time of year with gifts and smaller hampers given to

seniors across the many nursing homes on the Tomaree Peninsula.

“We try and provide for all those who need a little spark during the festive season,” said Mr Norris.

Vinnies is supported

by St Michaels Primary School who assist in raising donations for toys and food with their

“Mini Vinnies” charity efforts according to Mr Norris.

Vinnies is assisted through the efforts of over 20 volunteers and staff who help to bring all the hampers together.

“Our volunteers are amazing and give up a lot of time to help those that need it,” said Mr Norris.

Rotary’s collaboration with Council.

“It is great to see the completion of the wayfinding signage project. It’s another example of Nelson Bay Rotary and Port Stephens Council working together to provide the community and the many visitors to Nelson Bay with a wonderful information source,” she said.

Funded by a Community Grant obtained by the Rotary Club of Nelson Bay, the sign features a dedication to long-time Rotarian and Port Stephens resident, the late Barton (Bart) Dalyell Richardson OAM,

who first suggested a town clock for Nelson Bay to Council back in 2012.

“While the wayfinding sign is dedicated to Bart, this project also recognises the commitment to our local community by all those who have been members of Nelson Bay Rotary Club in the past 63 years,” Ms Levonpera said.

“This is a great example of Council working together with a great community group like Rotary to achieve a great result for our community,” Mayor Palmer said.

The sign includes an information ‘i’ and has a digital screen which can be used to marketing events and activities in and around Nelson Bay, with content managed by Council’s Public Relations and Marketing team. On another face of the sign is a map of the town centre, directions to assist in wayfinding and Braille to assist people who are blind or who have low vision. A digital numeric clock displays on a rotating basis.

Charity Dinner Set To Aid CF and Humpty Dumpty Foundation

NURSING Staff are often

seen as the backbone in children’s caregiving and it’s essential that they are empowered to deliver that care with the best possible support available.

This support is exactly what LJ Hooker, Nelson Bay hope to bring to those staff and hospitals on 29 February, 2020 by holding a charity dinner to aid the Humpty Dumpty Foundation and Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Australia.

The Humpty Dumpty Foundation work tirelessly to provide lifesaving medical equipment to aid in kid’s care at hospitals whilst CF Australia provides support and services to people with CF as well as their carers and families.

Rose Brennan from LJ Hooker, Nelson Bay said that both charities hold special significance within the community on the Tomaree Peninsula.

“There are quite a few families in the area whose children have been diagnosed with CF and we want to ensure that they have access to the best support and services available,” said Mrs Brennan.

“It’s important to give back to the community and provide some extra care to those who really need it.”

The dinner will include live entertainment, auctions and raffles with all funds raised going straight to both causes through the LJ Hooker Foundation.

This is the second charity dinner that Mrs Brennan and her team will host with

previous efforts in 2017 raising over $20,000 for the causes.

“We had such great local support for our last dinner

Shared Pathway Official Opening

THERE’S now even more of Boomerang Park to explore

on foot or wheels, with the official opening the new

$600,000 shared pathway last week. happening in Raymond Terrace The 2.5 metre wide

shared pathway has been made possible by a Grant from the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund.

“It’s fantastic to see people already making good use of this new shared pathway”

Mayor Ryan Palmer said, “It’s fantastic to see people already making good use of this new shared pathway — there’s walkers, runners, skaters and cyclists taking advantage of this new route which connects Raymond Terrace.

“Boomerang Park covers over 20 hectares and this pathway makes it easier to access more areas of this incredible regional park,” he said.

“Over the past few years, Port Stephens Council has invested in Boomerang Park to create a vibrant place that caters for everyone.”

“From the new

playground and skate park to the Men’s Shed and Senior Citizen’s facilities —this shared pathway is now the final piece of the puzzle.”

“With this grant funding, we’ve been able to help more people get outside and enjoy all of the wonderful new facilities that Boomerang Park has to offer,” Mayor Palmer said.

Member of the Legislative Council, Taylor Martin MLC said the new shared paths at Boomerang Park were a great example of the type of projects that have been funded by the Stronger Country Communities Fund.

“In total, $2.2 million has been invested in Port Stephens from this fund to improve community facilities such as shared paths, playgrounds and sporting infrastructure,” Mr Martin said.

The works included a new shared pathway throughout Boomerang Park stretching over 750 metres, as well as lighting, entry signage, landscaping and bike racks.

IN a new fundraising initiative the Real Futures Foundation delivered its first BareFoot Bowls event.

The Latitude One Real Futures Foundation BareFoot Bowls saw some 80 bowlers remove their shoes and get busy on the greens raising over $5000 for the charity.

The members of Fingal Bay Sports Club were fantastic in sharing their knowledge of the game and getting into the fun on the night.

The event was for those who had never played before as well as those who are regulars.

The bowling was well received and the competition kept at a fun and friendly level.

A sausage sizzle was cooked up by the Lions Club of Soldiers Point and the event was also supported by the Tomaree Business Chamber.

Chamber President Leah Anderson told News Of The Area, “Chamber is happy to support our local youth in particular in their transition from school to employment, our youth are our future workforce which makes supporting the Real Futures Foundation important to all our member businesses.”

Sharon Blunt President of the Lions Club of Soldiers Point told News Of The Area, “The Lions Club of Soldiers Point were very happy to be asked to assist the Real Futures Foundation at the Latitude One Real Futures Foundation BareFoot Bowls at Fingal Bay Sports Club.

“Lions have been supporting the Foundation since its inception over 15 years ago.

“We believe in working with our local youth to assist them in achieving their best.”

Futsal Stars represent

FUTSAL is certainly taking off in Port Stephens with 20 junior players from the Medowie Futsal Centre heading to Sydney from 11 to 19 January to represent Northern NSW in the Nation Club Championships.

Australia’s biggest club futsal event will be held in venues across Castle Hill, Penrith, and Windsor.

For teams there is the chance to represent their state or region and become Australian champions.

For individual players, there is the chance of being selected to represent Australia in an international tour.

The championship attracts around 2000 players and 4000 supporters from six states across Australia.
