THEY say through the emotional times of heartbreak and sorrow it takes a community of people to rally together to help shoulder the weight of the world.

That is exactly what the proud people of Port Stephens did for local league and Box Beach icon, Shane ‘Chilli’ Compton after the tragic passing of his wife, Amber in 2010 and the recent devastating loss of his partner, Chantelle.

The Fingal Bay Bomboras Rugby League Club and Shoal Bay Country Club came together to present a 300 Club fundraiser on 13 Sunday that saw all proceeds go to ‘Chilli’ and his family.

Fingal Bay Bomboras Hold 300 Club To Rally Funds FROM Page 1

It was a day of celebration and remembrance that saw the event attracted over 260 local punters into the Country Club bars to enjoy some fine food, cold refreshments and the chance to take home $10,000.

One of the Fingal Bay Bomboras’ 300 Club organisers, Leanna Blackwell said that the day was about coming together as a town and giving a helping hand however you can.

“Once again the sporting, social and business communities have thrown huge support behind a legend of a bloke that’s going through some tough times,” said Ms Blackwell.

“We couldn’t have done it without the resolve of our volunteer fundraisers who’ve been phenomenal in their workload for this cause.”

Volunteers had been busy throughout the last month hitting the streets and social media accounts to generate ticket sales for the day.

Local ladies ‘Bombies’ stalwart, Lydia McQueen said, “There was

great last minute support from the area.”

The top purse of $10,000 was won by Rod Green who thanked the community and the Fingal Bay Bomboras for a great day out to help

This is how I am now referred to by some health professionals in Port Stephens.

My name is Rex and I am writing today to applaud the work performed by our local heroes of the Emergency services, namely the Tomaree Polyclinic and the Ambulance Paramedics.

‘23’ refers to the number of times I was given CPR and shock treatment and came back from cardiac arrest. According to Dave the Paramedic who was

involved in my resuscitation, this is a kind of local record.

There are many factors that worked in my favour and saved my life.

My wife Pam rushed me to the Polyclinic as soon as the chest pains started.

I am reasonably fit for my age (66), not overweight and do not smoke.

The specialised ambulance was deployed and as they arrived I was in the Polyclinic when the arrests began. Had the arrests been later and I had been on my way to Newcastle,

‘Chilli’ and his children.

The doctor, hospital staff and paramedics all played their part in keeping me alive during the 23 cardiac arrests I suffered during the next 90 minutes.

I was then stabilised and transferred by the Westpac Rescue helicopter to John Hunter Hospital where the blockage was cleared and two stents inserted.

From mid-morning Friday to mid-morning Sat I was sedated and knew nothing

about the previous 24 hours.

Then, for good behaviour, I was discharged on Monday.

So if you experience a chest pain or any of the other many alerts for a heart attack, ring for an ambulance or get to an emergency ward immediately. It could save your life.

No one expected me to have a heart issue, especially me.

By Julie McKimm MEDOWIE Garden Club are holding their annual Spring Plant Sale on Saturday 19 October from 8am to 1pm in the Medowie Community Hall carpark.

The Club, which meets every month in a member’s garden, celebrated its 10th Anniversary last year and has some 50 members currently.

Chris Voigt from Medowie Garden Club told News Of The Area, “A wide range of locally grown plants will be for sale at a reasonable price and there

There will be a BBQ featuring bacon and egg rolls and sausage sizzle, as well as tea and coffee available for sale.

Money from the sale will go towards three local charities, including the

Foodways service which is run by the Assembly of God. Foodways provides ongoing support to 1300 local families and prepare and provide 300 to 400 meals per week along with long life and fresh food.

Last year’s sale saw over $2,500 raised to go towards the drought stricken farmers out west.

Sister City Donation from Council

PORT Stephens Council has donated $4000 to one of the regions Sister Cities after the region was hit by two devastating typhoons.| Port Stephens and Tateyama have had a Sister Friendship Agreement stretching almost 20 years and this year commemorates the tenth anniversary of this Sister Cities relationship.

Nigel Dique, Chairman of Port Stephens Sister Cities Committee told News Of The Area, “Port Stephens Council is to be commended for its generous donation to our sister city Tateyama in its hour of need.”

Tateyama has not yet recovered after being hammered by typhoon Faxia last month and now has an even bigger typhoon Hagibis to contend with.

“The donation of $4000 comprising $1000 from Mayoral funds and $1000 from each of the three Ward funds to support the rebuild of school facilities takes on extra significance in the wake of Hagibis.”

For those who have felt that Council should spend their money at home it is heartening to know that when Port Stephens was hit by a superstorm in 2015, the Tateyama International

Exchange Society, the Sister Cities counterpart was quick to respond with a donation of more than $4000.

“This is what sister city relationships are all about; providing a helping hand in

addition to forging cultural, educational and sporting connections,” he said.

The Sister Cities committee added $500 from its reserves, pending Council approval, to Council’s donation and assure

the community that the funds will be put to good use.

To celebrate, 29 residents of Tateyama will visit Port Stephens for three days commencing 25 October.

The 29 visitors will

spend time entrenched in the wonderful culture of Port Stephens as they enjoy a home hosted experience here during their stay.

Members from choirs from around the world will

participate in an upcoming Choral Festival.

The Event will see 110 choristers from 7 choirs,

including the Kirara Chorus from Tateyama in Japan, coming together in a public concert.

Other choirs taking part are Tuggerah Lakes Choral Society, Budgewoi Ladies Chorus, Hunter Women of Note from Fern Bay, the Vocal Company from Newcastle and two local choirs, the SeaSide Singers and Port Harmony.

The concert will be held on Saturday, 26 October from 2.00pm at Soldiers Point Bowling Club.

Along with the concert, the festival will include a morning workshop for all choristers taking part, under the leadership of Peter Guy, organist and choirmaster at Christchurch Cathedral in

Newcastle.

Jeanette Antrum of the Seaside Singers told News Of The Area, “There will be some pop-up concerts occurring around the Bay in the lead-up to the Festival, so watch out for those on the 18 and 25 October 2019.”

These are part of the inaugural Tomaree Arts Festival which will include the Choral Festival and many other Community Arts Exhibitions happening in the Bay over the weekend of 25 to 28 October 2019.

“Come along and enjoy the singing of massed voices working together in harmony, tickets are available for $20 from the Club or at the door on the day of the concert,” she said.

CLIMATE change and action, or lack thereof is considered by some the single biggest issue facing humanity today.

EcoNetwork are holding a Forum in November which will focus on the Climate Crisis.

When it comes to climate change and the crisis facing us all there is polarity.

Is it the science or is it fake news?

Some believe that the climate crisis is fact; others mock the science.

What we do know is there are more bushfires earlier each year.

Extreme weather and rising sea levels are a fact.

Hawks Nest and Stockton Beach is a glaring example of coastal erosion on our doorstep that needs more than mitigation.

There is erosion at Corlette Beach, Wanda Beach and in other areas of the Port Stephens estuary.

This generation, ourselves and our children will be the last to see many of

Port Stephens and the Myall Coast have our own species under threat, most notable is the Koala.

There are many community groups in the region that work hard to support the environment from LandCare and Port Stephens Koalas and Irukandji to Econetwork.

EcoNetwork has 23 affiliated community and

environmental groups which benefit from the support and networking provided.

“We need an overarching coastal management plan, for the Port Stephens area.”

Mr Watt sees the World Heritage Listing bid for the region as a distraction at this stage as it will take at least 3 years for the region to be considered for the listing.

ONE local mother’s moment of reflection whilst trying to soothe her anxious child to sleep sparked a question that led to an idea that now inspires and connects communities and families across the Nation.

opportunities for children and their families. The heart of the project continues to be about promoting healthy bonds in the home.

Each Play and Learn pack includes a unique, handmade doll that a dedicated volunteer has ‘sewn’ lovingly created, the Project KIN storybook ‘Imagine if you had a Friend’ which tells the story of the child meeting their new friend

Alyssa Hogan’s U13G team also finished runners up to Queensland North Coast, with Alyssa also being awarded the Golden Boot for the most goals in her division.
