Excellence Award for Children’s Services team AFTER almost 40 years of providing care to local children, Port Stephens’ Council’s Children’s Services team have been awarded the 2020 NSW Local Government Excellence Award for Community Development and Services.

The team have been recognised for their recent expansion of services and rebrand to Thrive Kids in a virtual awards ceremony online.

Council’s Children’s Services Coordinator Lynette Fitz Henry says it’s an exciting time for the Thrive Kids team.

“We’re incredibly excited to win this award against extremely tough competition!

“It’s a wonderful reflection of all of the hard work the team has put in to expand our services and help even more families across our region,” Ms Fitz Henry said.

Port Stephens Dismayed With Rubbish Left By Visitors As Region Launches Tourism Campaign FROM Page 1 the area is already being “loved to death” with the local environment and infrastructure feeling the strain.

Jam packed roads and car parks, congested boat ramps, overflowing crowds at beaches and growing incidents of trashed land and seascapes have many wondering how much more Port Stephens can take.

Less than a month after travel restrictions have lifted some of the natural wonders the campaign focuses on are seeing mounds of rubbish return and locals have had enough.

Jye Astley, a local tradesmen and surfer says that each weekend there is increasing waste being left by visitors on Samurai Beach and that it’s time to address the harsh realities tourism can bring.

“Throughout the pandemic lockdown period all our local beaches were pretty much spotless, vegetation was starting to come back along the dunes and there was a real sense that locals were looking after our natural environment,” said Jye. “Now with tourists returning I see mounds of rubbish left by those visiting and illegally camping along the beach.

“I love to travel myself but they need to take their rubbish with them and abide by the local guidelines, it’s not bloody rocket science.”

In an escalating trend it’s also been up to local surfers and fishermen to remind visitors to clean up after themselves according to numerous Port Stephens’ community based social media pages.

By Marian SAMPSON THE COVID-19 pandemic failed to halt the hardworking members of Nelson Bay Rotary Club who have contributed a phenomenal $96,300 in the past 12 months to a wide variety of charitable causes, including medical research, bushfire appeals and local community groups.

The funds were raised at local community events organised by the Nelson Bay Rotary Club.

The contribution is quite outstanding considering the Club has been adhering to COVID-19 restrictions for the past 4 months, meeting weekly

At the Club’s annual changeover meeting, held virtually in late June, 2019/20 President Arja Levonpera presented her report.

Arja Levonpera said, “Despite a year severely disrupted by the COVID-19 Virus which resulted in our Annual Charity Golf Day being cancelled and regular face to face meetings discontinued from mid-March, the Club continued with existing sound programs and participated in two additional fund-raising events including The Judy Mitchell Memorial Fundraiser in aid of Motor Neurone Disease which raised $27,200 and The Bushfire Relief Appeal which raised a further

Much of the club’s income came from the humble sausage sandwich at venues like Bunnings at Taylors Beach.

Some of the clubs other activities for the year included raising $2000 for the End Polio Program at their “Ride like a Girl” movie night.

The club has also hosted a Friendship Exchange Team from United States, District 5610.

One of their ongoing commitments is to ear health in indigenous communities and the club honoured a $20,000 commitment to the HMRI Indigenous Ear Health Project headed by Associate Professor Kelvin Kong and pledged a

further $10,000.

One of the highlights for 2019/2020 for club members was the installation of the long-awaited Town clock honouring the late Bart Richardson, a well-known local and long serving Rotarian.

The club is diverse in its activities having also assisted at the Newcastle Science and Engineering Challenge and State Finals held in Newcastle, organising the Science Discovery Day for Year 6 Primary students held at Tomaree High School, and commencement of creating an outdoor meeting area at the Yacaaba Women’s Refuge Centre.

In addition to this local work, Nelson Bay Rotary Club’s contribution to Rotary’s own charity The Rotary Foundation has now exceeded over $100,000US. “Some of this money has been returned to the local community for local projects in the club’s fitness and exercise trail which extends from Corlette to Little Beach.

“The remainder of the contribution has been distributed for overseas projects, including eliminating Polio,” she said.

The club’s New President for 2020/21 is Liz Friend.

Incoming President Liz Friend said that as we emerge from COVID,” Rotary will have to make adjustments like any organisation, and, as a Club we can see this as an opportunity to re-think and find solutions that will help us attract new members and retain existing members”.

She believes that from early on many people, young and old, were trying to find ways they could help others and COVID restrictions have changed us - for the better.

“We looked at what we valued: family, community, work-life balance, and health of course,” she said.

This provides our Club with an opportunity to tap into this volunteer spirit and to reach out to those in our community who may also be looking for an opportunity to serve others.

THE closure of the NSW-Victorian border last week for the first time in 100 years is a stark reminder that the COVID-19 pandemic is not over.

As Port Stephens continues to deal with the effects of the virus, we all have a responsibility to protect ourselves, our families and our community from transmission.

We should all go back to basics — washing our hands, following physical distancing, adhering to the NSW public health order and if you have even the mildest of symptoms, please go and get tested.

I know that it has been a difficult time for many. We’ve all felt the effects of COVID-19 in different ways — particularly the isolation from our community, which is so unique in Port Stephens.

That’s why we’ve launched our Have a Yarn community connections program aimed at reducing social isolation experienced as a result of the global pandemic.

We are inviting all members of the Port Stephens communi-knity to knit and crochet designs that will be installed across public spaces in our region throughout September this year.

This program will help our residents regain the sense of community, creativity and connection we all felt before coronavirus — by dusting off the knitting needles, digging through old wool supplies and calling up a friend to have a yarn.

Crafters of all levels can take part and submit their finished creations to Council’s libraries, Administration Building or Visitor Information Centre by Monday 17 August 2020. I look forward to seeing your creations!

I know it can be hard to keep positive during this time but together, we’ll pull through this. Let’s continue to stay strong.

Avoiding COVID Crisis

WITH pandemonium back in Victoria with four days of triple digit new cases recorded plus an outbreak at the Crossroads in Sydney tied to a pub.

Australia is at a new high, or a new low depending how you look at things.

We have one state on the brink of disaster with the potential to spiral out of control, health workers in four Victorian hospitals have now tested positive alongside residents in high density public housing and over 100 cases tied to one school in the state..

Other states are desperately wanting to avoid the potential pitfalls of needing to go back into lockdown with NSW on the brink due to the outbreak at the Crossroads..

With increasing visitation

to the region and school holidays in place, we need to not only do the three, but be cautious and COVID-19 safe.

For many, life will simply go on, with hand hygiene and some distancing added to the mix.

For others in retail, fitness and hospitality there is an urgent need to make sure that they are operating under the right COVID-19 safe plan.

The pub at the Crossroads in Sydney has shown that there can be transmission with multiple unrelated cases traced through the venue which has since been closed and is now the site of a pop up testing facility for patrons.

Every café, restaurant, pub and club must record contact details of patrons.

For some it is as simple as collecting dates, times, names and a contact phone number on paper at the venue.

Others like Little Beach Boathouse have ramped up online booking procedures to

capture the right data.

At the end of the day businesses have a responsibility to collect this data so that if there is a need NSW Health can conduct contact tracing.

Businesses can find out and download the NSW Government’s guidelines for being COVID-19 safe at www. nsw.gov.au/covid-19.

Leah Anderson President of Tomaree Business Chamber told News Of The Area, “We want every business in Port Stephens to be a COVID-19 Safe business.

“Many businesses like golf courses, and clubs have already undertaken the COVID-19 Safe training and they have COVID safe plans in place,” she said.

She is urging all businesses to make sure that they are COVID-19 safe and fully compliant.

She believes that if we work together and follow the guidelines we can come out of

this pandemic without losing too many jobs and businesses; a second lockdown could change all that.

“Our students especially those like my daughter who is doing her HSC this year, need certainty, they need to stay in school, not be homeschooled.”

To stay open and out of lockdown we need everyone to follow COVID safe plans.

“Our older and vulnerable residents need us to comply as well, so far we have as a community avoided tragedy, while opening the doors to business, I’d like to see that continue.”

“All it takes is care – let us lead by example and care enough to make our community an example of what to do, not what not to do,” she said.

We can all make changes to keep people safe, it only takes one person to do the grocery shopping, not 5 or 6, limiting numbers in shops is something

COVID-19 severely impacting Wendy’s ability to make the journey herself this year she’s teamed up with her friend and author Chandra Clements to produce a book ‘Rona Stole Our Relief’.

The book serves to highlight the plight of the PNG women who are facing increasing health risks associated with

childbirth and Cervical Cancer whilst raising much needed funds to continue health services on the ground.

Wendy says that what started as an interest in the human rights of the PNG people during a 2005 trip has turned into a drive to better the lives of our neighbours to the North.

“We first visited Mando Village in the Eastern Highlands of PNG in 2005 and quickly saw the need to help make a change to the conditions women and girls were facing in these remote locations,” said Wendy.

“There was minimal infrastructure and healthcare support and it was becoming

“There’s the risks associated with COVID and all the other piling up health concerns.

“This book aims to ensure the women of PNG aren’t left behind.”

“We doubled our OOSH (Outside of School Hours) services from 4 to 8 and increased our number of Family Day Care educators from 39 to 65.

“To reflect these updates, Council created a new brand in-house that would combine all of our services. When people see Thrive Kids, they know that it’s quality childcare services offered by Port Stephens Council.”

Ms Fitz Henry says Thrive Kids offers a range of services for children aged up to 12, including OOSH, Family Day Care and Mobile Preschool.

“OOSH offers quality care for children before and after school — it’s really designed for working families. We’re excited to now be operating OOSH at 8 locations across Port Stephens,

with our newest centre at Grahamstown Public School.

“The Mobile Preschool is a unique concept where we drive the van to 5 different venues in Port Stephens to help children get ready to start school.

“Family Day Care is a family-focused childcare style. The educators provide

care in their own homes, so it’s for families who like a unique and small environment for their child.

We currently support 65 educators in providing professional education and care for children ranging from birth to 13 years,” she said.

Some will sink like a stone, some will need to be rescued and some will return empty-mouthed and sulky, while the golden retriever will win every time because that’s its instinct. It’s just not a fair playing field. Show offs!

If you have a puppy or any dog that doesn’t understand a basic recall command, it should be on a leash because frankly there is nothing worse than reclining on a towel, eyes closed, imagining you are in Tahiti and there is no such thing as a pandemic going on, and then having Fido jump all over you, scratching your torso and ensuring that you are now a hot mess of sand, sunscreen and dog hair. Yes, it is a ‘dog beach’ but that doesn’t mean no one else can enjoy themselves.

I think we all remember the scene in Marley & Me when the dog defecates in the ocean. Make sure you have bags on hand, use them, and put them in the bins provided. This seems so blatantly obvious that I shouldn’t have to mention it, and yet there are still some people who are apparently too precious to clean up after their pooch.

We are very fortunate to have off-leash areas for our dogs, but common sense prevails and many dogs and their owners don’t seem to have a lot of it.

Climate Change Policy Feedback

PORT Stephens Council has opened its Climate Change Policy for community feedback until 24 July, 2020.

Earlier this year Council voted against declaring a Climate Emergency.

For a tourism destination that now has a strapline which states that Port Stephens is Incredible By Nature, we can see that we live in a community which has business offerings that are clearly linked to the environment.

Therefore, it is also clear that addressing climate change adequately is imperative for the future of tourism businesses and the community who live, work and play in the region.

Councillor Arnott said, “This is a policy statement outlining Council’s belief in human-induced climate change, the consequences of climate change, from worsening bushfires to coastal erosion, and outlining Council’s commitment to do its part in combating climate change.

“The policy also includes residents and businesses, because we need everyone in our community to do their part to work towards reducing our carbon footprint.

“The recent summer

bushfires show just how important it is that we take climate change seriously.

“I’m pleased that my motion from February, which was a result of community action, has led to this policy being put on public exhibition.

“I encourage all stakeholders, from residents to businesses, to have a read of this policy, and provide comments to Council.

“This policy is a fantastic step in the right direction and I’m excited for Council to continue playing a central role in combating climate change,” he said.

Kathy Brown of Econetwork Port Stephens told News Of The Area, “It is encouraging to see Port Stephens Council developing

policy in this area, however it’s long overdue.

“Port Stephens is especially vulnerable to dramatic changes in climate not only because of our coastal location but because of our population dynamics.

“Climate Emergency Declarations with all layers of government were mobilised in 2016 and since then 89 councils across Australia have recognised this as an important step in developing strategies to cope with climate change.

“For example, the first council in Australia to declare a Climate Emergency, Darebin in Victoria, as part of their strategy, built on an existing policy that provided solar panels to low income households. “Darebin Council

recognised that because of the cost of heating many of their elderly residents were not adequately heating their houses in winter.

“They recognised it as a social equity issue.”

In this region the council provided the funding to supply low income households with solar panels.

The panels were then paid off through rate payments over several years.

“Looking forward to the implementation of similar policies at Port Stephens Council.

“The policy on exhibition is a good first step but EcoNetwork would like to see the details.

“The value of the policy is very difficult to judge based on

IT is now full steam ahead for our Probus Clubs.

Lockdown restrictions have eased, monthly meetings can return and our

over 55’s who are members of the very active Probus Clubs around Port Stephens are ready to tackle the challenges of being together COVID-19 safe.

Fran Wathen, Probus Ambassador for the Port Stephens area told News Of The Area, “Members have missed the fun and fellowship of the wide range of events

Melanie Delaney, leader of the Spinners and Weavers, told us that during lockdown they

meeting regularly at Dutchies Beach and enjoyed spinning in public, which has created a lot of interest amongst the joggers, walkers and beach goers.

“At a recent get together, since it was likely to be our last outdoor adventure for a while, we decided to have a bit of a fashion parade to model our latest creations. It was a bit of fun with only a small audience of a couple of dog walkers,” she said.

There have also been Fusion-in-the-Park gatherings at Dutchies Beach.

While the weather hasn’t always been kind, having the

opportunity to talk and see what everyone else has been creating has been fantastic.

With the gradual opening of public places, the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre has officially registered as a COVID Safe business.

The premises were thoroughly cleaned and our craft rooms have been set up for social distancing using the 4 square metre rule.

On 1 July group activities resumed with many groups scheduling additional sessions to cater for the numbers.

The Gallery will only open to the public once the safety of

our members is assured.

Members of the centre are looking forward to a firm date for re-opening the gallery, once this is set the display organisers will get to work and produce some interesting displays from the new items that so many members have been busily creating throughout lockdown.

This is one creative community which is strong and has remain connected with the many members thankful for their crafts which have kept them busy and stimulated during lockdown.
