Meryl takes the shot FEDERAL Member for Paterson, Meryl Swanson has already taken the flu shot and is pressing people to do the same.

With the 2020 flu season not far away, the community is urged — and especially those in vulnerable groups or age brackets— to arrange vaccination against seasonal influenza.

Ms Swanson said, “It’s super important for people to have their flu shot at this time of the year.”

Whilst flu vaccination does not prevent against COVID-19, a flu vaccination is critical to protecting the general health of people from influenza.

JUST because there is a pandemic doesn’t mean that the winter season won’t see more call outs for the local Fire and Rescue Crews, however it will change the way they interact with the public.

Dennis Peters, Captain of Fire and Rescue NSW, Raymond Terrace told News Of The Area, “As a result of the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, your local Fire and Rescue crew will be interacting with the community a bit differently for the time being.

“We have cancelled all community engagements including schools and childcare centre visits, as well as our home fire safety visits.

“We will also not be allowing entry to our Station or truck of anyone but essential personnel.”

The good news is that the crews will still be there to keep us safe if there is a fire.

The community can call to ask for advice over the phone or even ask questions via Facebook.

Captain Peters encourages anyone who has any questions to get in touch.

“These changes are to ensure the safety and good health of our crew, so that we are able

to continue responding to emergencies in our area and looking after the community.

“We will be stepping up cleaning and disinfecting our Station and appliances, but otherwise it is business as usual for us in protecting the community,” he said.

Police on constant patrol throughout Port The COVID19 crisis has extended the role of local Police according to Constable First Class Luke Withers from Lemon Tree Passage “We are on constant patrol of the play areas, boat ramps, parks and beaches,” he said.

“These are trying times and we all must play our role in keeping this virus at bay,” he added.

“We work in tandem with Port Stephens Council Rangers to get better coverage of the area,” he said Police follow up every report they receive from Crime Stoppers and ask residents to pass on exact details.

The Port Stephens Hunter Police District is committed to providing our community with the highest level of customer service at all times, however they are presently receiving a high volume of calls in relation to COVID-19.

When phoning Port Stephens police (local line), to ensure they are able to appropriately respond to calls for service, the telephone system’s Voice Response has been updated.

Council hold meetings online PORT Stephens Council will hold its Ordinary Council meeting via video conference for the first time in an effort to protect the Mayor, Councillors, staff and the community from COVID-19 (coronavirus).

Mayor Ryan Palmer says the move to hold Council meetings online is in line with the current restrictions on public gatherings by the Department of Health and advice from the Office of Local Government.

“Through technology, we will continue to deliver our usual services and provide the community with access to Council meetings,” Mayor Palmer said.

“Moving meetings online also allows Council to adhere to Government measures in place preventing public gatherings

to help stop the spread of COVID-19 while ensuring we continue to deliver our usual services for our community.

“This is a first for Port Stephens: we are living in unprecedented times and the health and wellbeing of all people should be everyone’s priority at this time,” he added.

Applications to speak at Public Access must be received electronically by the Mayor’s Office by 12 noon Monday prior to the Tuesday of the Ordinary Meeting.

Help at Hand

By Marian SAMPSON IT is a sad fact but whenever a crisis of any kind happens, be it drought, bushfires, floods, cyclones and yes pandemics we see shifts in behaviour.

It normally brings out the best in all of us, not just Australians but around the world.

Here, we pride ourselves on mateship, on lending a helping hand; we support and nurture each other, help where we can and look out for our friends and neighbors.

There is a portion of the population that will use a crisis like this to exercise or strengthen the coercive power and control they have over others that feeds their personality disorder.

These are the perpetrators of family and domestic violence.

We all know that even in normal times, the most dangerous time for any victim of abuse or violence occurs when that person gains enough strength to break the chain … to leave the relationship.

Unfortunately, in a crisis, perpetrators are handed a

perfect excuse to escalate their behavior.

In a pandemic crisis like this, victims have no choice.

They can’t go anywhere!

They can’t leave.

Abusers can keep their victims at home, under control, living in fear.

Fear for themselves, their children, their safety, their health too.

“There have already been reports of an escalation in domestic and family violence by as much as 50% over a month ago.

“This will certainly get worse.

“We know that perpetrators of domestic and family abuse weaponize isolation, coercion and surveillance all the time.

“I have even heard anecdotes of perpetrators bringing friends home and then claiming they have COVID-19 after they’ve left.

“They’re using the Coronavirus as a weapon …

“I have it” … “my friend who was just here has it.”

Roger urges everyone in the community to watch out for your friends and neighbours, and listen.

If you think this abuse is going on, report it.

Call the Police.

They’re trained and empowered to help.

You don’t have to put yourself in danger.

“If you are experiencing abuse, or know someone who is, call 1 800 RESPECT,” he said.

Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington told News Of The Area,

“Many local families will struggle through this crisis, and awfully, that means some families will face added dangers because of domestic and family violence.

“It’s hard to imagine what it must be like being told to stay home when your own home isn’t safe.

“So local Police have been provided with additional powers to protect victims, including strengthened Apprehended Domestic Violence Orders.

“The Yacaaba Centre and PSFANS, the local domestic violence support services, have had to change the way they operate during this crisis but are still doing a wonderful job supporting those who need help,” she said.

Ms Washington believes it is vital for those living in a violent situation that they know there’s help if they need it.

White Nissan Navara in Nelson Bay last Sunday AN investigation is underway after two people were coughed on by an unknown man at Nelson Bay. Just before 2pm (Sunday 12 April 2020), a 73-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman were walking along Victoria Parade, Nelson Bay, and as they approached the pedestrian crossing, a white Nissan Navara slowed and pulled up beside them.

Police have been told that a man leaned his head and shoulders out of the passenger window and coughed – making a retching sound – over the couple.

He and the other occupants in the vehicle started laughing before the vehicle drove off.

The couple contacted police and officers from Port Stephens/ Hunter Police District commenced an investigation.

As their inquiries continue, police are appealing for information from the community to locate the vehicle and identify the occupants at the time of the incident.

In particular, investigators would like to speak with a man who they believe may be able to assist with their inquiries.

He is described as being of Caucasian appearance with tanned skin, aged in his late teens or early 20s, with short, dark, curly hair. He was last seen wearing a red and dark-coloured checkered top.

Police are urging anyone with information, including dash cam from the area around the time of the incident, to contact Nelson Bay police as soon as possible.

Fuel Prices Hit a Low

FUEL Prices have hit a low in the Bay with one Service Station retailing E10 for 99 cents per litre.

It is three weeks since the first predictions that petrol could drop to $1 a litre in Australia after a price war ignited between Saudi Arabia and Russia amid coronavirus fears.

Oil prices plunged over 20% in early March with concerns that the coronavirus outbreak would see the demand at the pump decrease with essential travel restrictions.

Normally we see fuel prices go up and down due to a combination of factors, changes in International benchmark prices, fluctuations in the Australian dollar, pricing decisions by fuel wholesalers and retailers and levels of competition.

Most motorists would argue that pre school holidays and public holidays usually see a price hike at the bowser; not so far this holiday period.

How low we will see fuel drop during the coronavirus crisis remains to be seen.

Retirement in Unusual Times

By Julie MCKIMM THE end of term at one local Port Stephens school brought with it the retirement of their much valued and respected Deputy Principal, Mrs Sue Wilson.

Mrs Wilson’s career has spanned 44 years in Education, 8 of which have been at Wirreanda Public in Medowie.

She has been an integral and much-loved member of Wirreanda’s staff and school community.

Her passion for learning and for student wellbeing, coupled with her dynamic style and energy made her a favourite amongst students

and families alike.

Due to the current restrictions, a proper send-off will have to wait until later in the year.

No, this is not how low we have stooped. This is (allegedly) how low a couple of young people have stooped and they are not at all reflective of our broader community. Stories such as this one can be really distressing, and they are distressing because most of us cannot fathom, in our wildest dreams, how people could be so uncaring, so insensitive and so devoid of humanity as to cough on vulnerable people in times when they are already anxious.

I think it is important not to dwell on those seeking attention in repulsive ways and instead focus on the many incredible ways people in our community are supporting each other. Just within my small group of friends and neighbours, I have experienced people sharing recipes, bartering fish for meat, checking in with elderly friends, having Zoom parties instead of the usual weekend catch-ups, and helping each other with kids’ homework (who knew Year 9 maths was so challenging?).

I’ve also witnessed locals respecting social distancing measures, but saying hearty greetings to each other as they walk past while exercising, smiling more and generally getting out of their bubbles and realising the many things we have to be grateful for, particularly in an area as spacious and beautiful as Port Stephens.

Businesses are being incredibly innovative and coming up with new ways to meet their customers’ needs. Parents are learning how to be tech-savvy via their children. Pets are being adopted. Many are returning to a simpler way of living – planting veggie patches, baking and even buying chooks. In the midst of this pandemic, there is a lot of good out there.

I’m not going to get all Louise Hay or Deepak Chopra on you, but the behaviour of a couple of (insert your collective noun of choice – mine will be censored out by the editor) is not representative of our wonderful community.

Local Program a First In NSW

STUDENTS from Medowie Christian School participated in an unusual program working with three Bachelor of Speech Pathology students, two from the University of Sydney and one from the University of Newcastle, who have spent six weeks at Medowie Christian School for their fourth-year internship.

The program is believed to be a first for NSW with the university students embedded in the Prep to Year 12 learning environment for the full six-week internship.

The program was instigated by Medowie Christian School’s Director of Literacy and Learning Engagement Kathryn Thorburn, who holds dual qualifications in both speech pathology and education. Ms Thorburn said that currently in NSW public schools, speech pathologists were not employed directly, despite this occurring in most

other states.

“If school age students receive speech pathology support at schools it will be in a pull out model, where the external speech pathologist

visits the school and works with the student essentially in a clinic setting at school,” Mrs Thorburn said.

“Newcastle University also runs a Speech Pathology in Schools program which allows second-year students to provide speech pathology intervention in a clinic room at school.” “My familiarity with the language of both education and speech pathology means I am able to support the translation of assessment information into classroom practice.

“Our recent implementation of systematic synthetic phonics using Sounds Write with Decodable readers and Heggerty’s phonemic awareness instruction starting in Prep means our students with language difficulties are being effectively taught just like all of our students and no one is falling through the gaps.”

She said the Speech Pathology university students found the placement invaluable.

“They understand the dynamics of the classroom, what types of support and interventions are most

effective and they know how to link this to classroom learning,” she said. “Our staff and students had the benefit of extra team members who brought a fresh perspective and a willingness to learn and work as part of our staff team.”

The final-year University of Sydney students, Natalie Tsoutsouras and Abe Junho Chung, said they enjoyed the unique opportunity.

Abe Junho Chung said: “It was great because at university we learn about everything we need to do but it is just words.

“It’s really great to get a realistic view about what it feels like and how a classroom runs.”

Amy Barwick, a fourthyear Bachelor of Speech Pathology student at the University of Newcastle said the Covid-19 outbreak also meant the students gained valuable insight into treating children virtually.

This program may have been a first in more ways than one but the enthusiasm and results bode well for the experience to be repeated in the future.

Tourists kept distance

RESIDENTS and authorities are breathing easy after tourists have heeded their calls to stay away from the Port Stephens region over the Easter holiday break.

Usually bustling with visitors from around Australia and abroad the

Tomaree Peninsula was a ghost town compared to this time last year.

The Port Stephens Tourist Information Centre reported that “there were no holiday bookings in line with the current Public Health Orders on COVID-19 and the centre had experienced minimal traffic with only essential

travellers enquiring at this time.”

Local cafe owner Lyle Goodman said that while the holiday trade was nonexistent, locals were still out and about exercising and grabbing their takeaway coffees.

“The mad rush isn’t on but the locals are still supporting

business,” said Mr Goodman.

“It’s got a real sense of calm and community at the moment, businesses rely on tourism and they’ll be back, the town just feels balanced at a time like this.”

Even though the streets have been empty, local corelords are still filling the ocean as waveriders attempt to safely dominate the Easter

swells.

Trent Hanson, surfer and troopcarrier enthusiast said “there was a fairly busy lineup at Box Beach but most surfers were staying well away from each other and the portal.”

As the curve continues to flatten in Australia, a NSW Health statement released on Easter Monday warned that now is not the time to be complacent for communities like Port Stephens.

“The daily rate of increase in COVID-19 cases has fallen over the past fortnight, with the rate of increase in the past 24 hours being less than 1%, compared with 9% observed in the 24 hours a fortnight ago,” said the statement.

“This is welcome news but there is still a long way to go before restrictions are lifted, now is the time we need people to be vigilant and stay the course.”
