Couple in to books DARRYL and Helen West are bibliophiles but for different reasons. Darryl reads around a dozen books a week and Helen , writing as Lena West, has authored ten novels.

The Port Stephens couple spent many years touring the parched outback which provided a rich source of material for Helen’s rural romance series. The novels are centred around the fictional town of ‘Oxley Crossing’.

If this sort of book has interest for you just google ‘Lena West Author’ and away you go.

On the other hand, Darryl is a prolific reader and with the closure of our Shire Libraries and the bookmobile he was facing severe withdrawal symptoms.

Luckily, the Llibrary service came to his rescue. They now home deliver and pick up books.

It’s a simple matter of ordering online or by phone and a Council van with a smiling driver will turn up once every week or so at a designated time.

“It’s a great idea ,” Darryl said.

“Our street has a few avid readers and we all gather together in the one spot at the same time to make it easier for the Librarian in the van,” he added.

Container Clean-Up Continues FROM Page 1 washing up on the beaches of Port Stephens and the Mid North Coast.

One container washed up on Yacaaba Headland.

A massive clean up operation followed which saw Varley Group the company contracted by the vessel’s insurer and responsible for feet on the ground, to collect the debris washed ashore.

750 cubic metres of debris had been collected by Varley Group in just 18 days from the incident, however, debris has continued to wash ashore and disrupt local commercial fishing operations.

Fishers have reported damage to their nets and hauling in push bikes rather than fish since the incident.

Mangled office chairs, push bikes, cars, utes, tyres, batteries and other products have been recovered so far.

The MV Pride’s crew are using subsea robotic equipment to clear the seabed.

This dirty job won’t be finished until all the containers and debris is recovered by MV Pride, back at the onshore the waste is processed, and sorted for appropriate disposal.

For environmentalists and commercial fishers the recovery of the containers is a definite win for the environment in the long term, however recovery of the costs of the clean-up from the YM Efficiency’s insurer could take much longer.

This would see many in community members left in the dark as to what is happening in their communities and also allow for a possible less transparent process.

Port Stephens Council has been quick to announce they will no longer publish the region’s obligatory

Notices in print - a decision that came only days after the Government announcement.

MidCoast Council is still proceeding with newspaper announcements (of Notices) at the present time.

The Shadow Minister for Local Government, Greg Warren, said, “In an unprecedented time like this, the Berejiklian Government should be doing everything it can to encourage the distribution of information as well as the creation and

retention of jobs,” Mr Warren said.

“There are dozens of employees at newspapers in the Minister’s South Coast electorate who must be seething at the decision by their local member that may ultimately destroy their livelihoods.

“Community newspapers highlight the best and worst of their local area and do an admirable job holding Politicians to account,“ he said.

Kate Washington, Member for Port Stephens has labelled the new ruling as a ‘betrayal of trust’ and allows Council to ‘hide Public Notices on different pages of their website.’

“Port Stephens Council has rushed at the opportunity to take a backward step,” she reportedly said.

“Council should take every opportunity to keep our community informed,” she said.

Already, many of the ‘big media players’, Australian Community Media and News Corp have announced they would suspend printing of a large number of community titles, in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Charged Public Place Shooting

A man has been charged following investigations into a public place shooting at Raymond Terrace last week.

ABOUT 11am on Saturday 2 May 2020, the occupants of a home on Benjamin Lee Drive, Raymond Terrace, located a .22 calibre bullet that penetrated the front door and lodged in an internal wall.

Police were called and an investigation was commenced.

About 10am today (Tuesday 5 May 2020), police from Port Stephens-Hunter PD searched a Mazda 323 in Dungog where they allegedly located a .22 calibre casing in the footwell.

The vehicle was seized and taken for further forensic examination.

About 4.10pm officers attended a home in Raymond Terrace where they arrested a 19-year-old man. He was taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station where he was questioned.

Police will allege they found a firearm during a search of the man’s home.

He was then charged with fire firearm at dwelling house with disregard for public safety, and possess unauthorised firearm.

He was given conditional bail and will appear in Raymond Terrace Local Court on Monday 1 June 2020.

Blueprint For The Future

WHEN it comes to vision and a positive future for our coastal towns of Fern Bay and Stockton it’s now all down on paper.

Despite the issue of erosion both Port Stephens and Newcastle City Councils have together developed a new vision for Fern Bay and North Stockton which will see the natural beauty of the area and natural links celebrated.

The vision of a pedestrianfriendly town centre in North Stockton and a drawcard coastal walk from Stockton to Tomaree Headland are part of an ambitious planning strategy adopted by Port Stephens and Newcastle Councils.

The new plan which was driven through community consultation forms a blueprint for the rapidly growing area.

The plan calls for new accommodation developments to support local tourism.

Much of the planned has been included as a direct result of community consultation.

Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the Fern Bay and North Stockton Strategy identifies opportunities to create a pedestrian-friendly town centre and mixed-use planning provisions that cater for diverse housing, connected open spaces and community amenities.

“Developed by both Newcastle and Port Stephens councils, the joint strategy is a fantastic outcome after a

great deal of work, and forms a strategic planning basis to follow along with landowners and the broader Stockton community,” Councillor Nelmes said.

“There are multiple large land holdings in the area that have potential to create positive outcomes for the community and we will work hand in hand with Port Stephens to plan for them in the years ahead.”

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer told News Of The Area, “The City of Newcastle has responsibility for and is currently developing a Coastal Management Program that will respond to the issue of erosion at Stockton.

“The Fern Bay and North Stockton Strategy includes an action for which the City of Newcastle is responsible to “investigate potential sources of sand for beach nourishment in Stockton area”.

“Port Stephens Council does not have any specific actions identified in the Strategy that relate to beach erosion in Stockton.

“However, we continue to work with City of Newcastle on a range of actions identified in the Strategy and we share information where necessary.

“It is noted that the Rifle Range is the only future development site in Fern Bay with access to the beach.

“The proposed rezoning area is west of the potential future erosion lines,” he said.

The strategy also recommends a ferry terminal at North Stockton, duplication of Nelson Bay Road with traffic lights at the intersection of Vardon Road, as well as other upgrades to paths, bus stops and transport.

If the whole strategy is adopted and becomes reality we will see: Further attraction of heritage and nature-based tourism including a coastal walk - featuring boardwalks and observation decks from Tomaree Headland to Stockton; improved access to useable open spaces and welldesigned community facilities; the prioritising safe and convenient travel by walking, cycling and public transport; and growing a resilient coastal community with access to liveable and diverse housing.

Dear Mrs LF, For the past few weeks our family has been, like many others, attempting to balance working from home, home schooling and home duties, but there is basically no delineation between any of them.

Each day is just one long blur of trying to remember passwords for Microsoft Teams, staring into the fridge, ignoring phones, Zoom meetings, tantrums, refusing to get out of bed, annoying playlists . . . and that is just the adults. Add a couple of kids to the mix and there is no hope of achieving anything.

I mean, today I was supposed to be doing copy edits, but instead I was learning the periodic table and Year 10 Algebra. I wasn't good at these things in High School, and I'm definitely no better now.

I completely understand how you feel, and although little Sonny Jim enjoys being at home, one day a week will benefit you, even if it is just a matter of reducing the number of dishwashing loads from three to one and actually getting through an entire yoga session without being interrupted by queries about protons and hyperbole examples.

Being apart makes the heart grow fonder and that is particularly true with parents and children. It is just not natural to have the darlings underfoot all day every day, and from what my friends and I have discovered, we have very little understanding of the curriculum and zero ability to teach it, so having your son at home may actually be stunting his potential.

All the best with it. Remember, we are all in the same boat.

Premier Lifts Restrictions Cafes and Restaurants to Re-open

AS the changes in the COVID-19 lockdown are eased there are plenty of positive things to note and even celebrate.

One is that as of this Friday our Cafés and Restaurants will be able to offer limited service alongside their new take-away and deliveries.

Other changes include the changes to numbers allowed for weddings, funerals and outdoor gatherings.

Locals who have been missing the gym will soon be able to partake in outdoor boot camp sessions and train in groups of up to 10 individuals.

The economy will be allowed to awaken somewhat as we enter this new stage, which is great for local business.

These freedoms will come at a cost and a cost that is a very real one.

The easing of restrictions does not mean we have defeated the virus – in very real terms it means that we have enough beds in hospitals to treat those who become infected.

Sadly we know that particularly the elderly and those with underlying health conditions are at greater risk.

This is good news for local

businesses in and around Port Stephens: it means our tourism offering may well be what people chose instead of that trip to Bali.

It also provides our tourism operators the opportunity to rebuild and for those businesses that have pivoted to consider keeping their new services as a part of their product and service mix in the long term.

Tomaree Business Chamber President Leah Anderson told News Of The Area, “It’s great news that restaurants and cafes can start operating again even with lower numbers.

“Our local tourism businesses need the support of the local community at the moment, as we gear up to welcome tourism back into the region as the State reopens.

“There’s no denying that these have been tough times for business and the community and we are looking forward to seeing business across Port Stephens strong once again,” she said.

Anderson also welcomed the concept of a 5-star hotel at Horizons Golf Resort, saying that the region needs to be seen as one which has high end offerings.

The proposed hotel will bring jobs, and that’s good news for two major sectors - jobs in construction and jobs in tourism and hospitality in the future.

Art Gallery is once again open

AFTER a six week lockdown and now the ‘road out’ plan for business to get back in operation, Tilligerry Art Gallery (TAG) is once again open for business.

The converted Fire Station on the main road in Lemon Tree Passage now operates between 10 am and 2pm Tuesday through to Friday for sales only.

Volunteer Jannine Deneen said that the Gallery welcomed people to wander through and inspect the many and varied arts and crafts on display

created by local painters and artisans.

“We really do miss the get- togethers and creative workshops which we ran before the lockdown,” she said.

“At the moment social distancing rules prevent that,” she added.

Local Business Pivots Manufacturing Vital Ventilators

LOCAL companies are proving that the Port Stephens region is at the top of its game with AMPcontrol pivoting to manufacture critically needed ventilators during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Collaboration and innovation has seen a truly timely solution engineered in our backyard to meet a vastly increased Australian and worldwide need.

The NSW Government is partnering with local universities and manufacturers to produce ventilators as part of its COVID-19 response, with two prototypes already underway.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said pre-production is expected to take around six weeks and if a shelf-ready model complies with the necessary regulatory requirements, full production can begin.

Tragically as we go back to the new normal with businesses reopening we know there will be more cases of COVID-19 in the community.

Now our health system will be equipped to deal with patients’ needs.

“We know with the easing of restrictions there could be

a rise in COVID-19 infections and if a second wave hits, we want our hospitals to have all the equipment they need,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“If those models are confirmed to align with Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) requirements full production can commence, if our hospitals require more ventilators.”

Health Minister Brad Hazzard said the NSW Government is doing all it can to combat global shortages of vital medical equipment to ensure NSW has the back-up it needs.

“Every country around the world is facing disrupted medical supply chains but we need ventilators – they can be the difference between life and death,” Mr Hazzard said.

“COVID-19 infects cells in the lungs causing oxygen levels to drop and a ventilator is a crucial piece of equipment that helps critically ill patients to breathe.

“To have local manufacturers who are able to supply much-needed equipment to support frontline health workers – in this case a consortium led by the University of Sydney and another by Newcastle-based Ampcontrol – is absolutely

invaluable.”

AMPcontrol is situated at Tomago.

The NSW Government invested an extra $800 million to support NSW Health during the COVID-19 crisis, with $10 million to encourage NSW businesses to urgently undertake pilot projects to produce ventilators and other critical medical equipment.

Ampcontrol engineers designed and delivered the first functional emergency ventilator prototype to the John Hunter Hospital Simulation Unit for testing by specialist clinicians just 18 days.

Production of 10 pilot ventilators will now commence undertaking further clinical assessment and testing with NSW Health, with the objective of enabling 600 ventilators to be rapidly built in the Hunter region if the need arises.

Knowing that our ventilator could help save lives in the fight against COVID-19 is incredible. ”In collaboration with local clinicians and two Hunter-

To quickly accelerate its knowledge of ventilator systems, the team engaged with specialist clinicians from Hunter New England Local Health District and the University of Newcastle to guide solutions and minimise

clinical and deployment risks, as well as coordinating with other groups working with NSW Health on other prototype ventilator solutions.

“We specialise in resources, infrastructure, and energy solutions, and what the team has achieved in partnership with clinicians in such a short time frame is nothing short of outstanding and a testament to the engineering excellence and ingenuity in our country.

We have been able to rapidly swing our world-leading expertise and production

facilities into manufacturing critical emergency medical equipment right here in the Hunter. ”We have such highly advanced manufacturing capability and ingenuity in our country. It is so important that industry and Government work together so that we can continue to produce innovative solutions and products here in Australia that make a difference to people’s lives around the globe”, Rod added.

THIS year more than ever we are aware of the service and sacrifice of our nurses both here and around the world.

May is the month when we celebrate nurses and midwives Internationally for their contribution to society.

May celebrated International Day of the Midwife on 5 May and International Nurses Day will be celebrated on 12 May. “Hunter New England Health is grateful for every midwife and nurse working across our District – all 9,160 of them - and I thank each and every one for the wonderful, truly personal work they do each day caring for our patients and their families,” said Ms Elizabeth Grist, Executive Director Clinical Services Nursing and Midwifery.

“Our nurses and midwives represent more than half our entire workforce, so I am pleased days like this recognise the enormous contribution they each make within our communities.”

Around the world COVID-19 has highlighted just how vital our nurses are and how much they care.

There are more than 50,000 Nurses and Midwives in NSW Health’s hospitals and services and they provide safe, quality care for the people of NSW. They are the ‘Healing Hearts’ of the NSW Health service.

The Healing Heart postcards provide a way to recognise and thank nurses and midwives for their unique contribution.

The NSW Government has committed to recruiting more nurses over the next four years and COVID-19 has seen the Federal Government offer discounted university courses for a range of essential workers including nurses.

WITH all face to face fundraising and major event activity on hold as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service has launched its annual appeal with a goal to raise over $300,000.

We often see the iconic helicopter flying over Port Stephens or even in troubled times coming to aid our community.

The upcoming financial appeal will directly assist the helicopter service to save local lives and lives across Northern NSW. ‘Annually, the people of Northern NSW are so generous in supporting this appeal.

Year in year out we see that a little from many goes a long way and we are ever grateful for that,’ Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service CEO Richard Jones OAM said.

“We know that this year is different and donation support may be difficult for many in our community at this time. We are all in this together and we hope our appeal reaches out to everyone, with those who are able, taking the steps to make their support count at this crucial time.”

Mr Jones said, “Through the current Coronavirus health crisis, our pilots, aircrew and engineers along with the NSW Health doctors

and NSW Ambulance critical care paramedics who fly with us, are working hard to deliver medical care for those in need across Northern NSW.” “Every year on average we fly over 1500 missions, including responding to emergency Triple 0 calls, inter hospital transfers and search and rescue. We’ve also recently seen a milestone achieved by our Lismore base, who performed its 10,000th mission since operations started in that area in 1982.”

“With the onset of the Coronavirus we have taken additional steps, over and above our existing protection, to address the challenges associated with the virus. This has been achieved through an increase in levels of personal protective equipment and modifying procedures to

ensure the safety of patients and crew,” Jones said.

“This invitation however is made mindful that many communities are yet to recover from the bushfire crisis and are now faced with these further challenges. We are very conscious that not everyone in our community is in a position to donate but we will be very grateful to those that are able.”

“This truly is a community run service. In the end we are one Community and as our thoughts are with those who are suffering in these trying times, our focus remains on the provision of the best aeromedical support for those in need 24-7,” Jones concluded.

Aerial herbicide spraying MidCoast Council will be carrying out coastal aerial spraying in June to control Bitou Bush in collaboration with other public authorities and land management agencies and conducted by experienced contractors.

Lynx WG (Metsulfuron methyl 600g/kg) will be applied at 20-30g/ha; or Macspred Glymac 360 (Glyphosate 360g/L) will be applied at 2 L/ha.

These herbicides will be applied as per requirements of APVMA off label permit 12251 for the control of Bitou Bush in coastal sand dunes, bushland and grass land.

Affected areas include Crowdy Head Beach, Crowdy Head Reserve (Harrington Beach), Manning Point Beach, Farquhar Park and inlet, South Old Bar to Wallabi Point, Nine Mile Beach Tuncurry, Boomerang Point Headland, Sandbar / Cellito Beach at Pacific Palms and Bennett’s Beach, Yacabba Peninsula, Jimmy’s Beach and Winda Woppa at Hawks Nest.

Following ‘Best Practice Guidelines for Aerial Spraying of Bitou Bush in New South Wales’, as an extra safety measure, all areas will be closed to public access from 7am to 5pm on the specific treatment days. Areas adjacent to Crowdy Head Reserve, Old Bar Airstrip, Forster Coastal Patrol and Myall Park Hawks Nest will be acting as helipads.

Notification of project proposal and registration of interest under BCD Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Consultation Requirements for Proponents 2010 (Stage 1) – Proposed Temporary Café at Stockton McCardle Cultural heritage (MCH) have been engaged by City of Newcastle Council to prepare an Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Assessment (ACHA) and Section 90 Aboriginal Heritage Impact Permit (AHIP) application, if required, for the proposed temporary café located at the southern end of Mitchell Street, at Stockton (Lot 7304 DP 1167630).

The purpose of community consultation with Aboriginal people is to assist the proposed applicant in the preparation of the AHIP application if required and to assist the Chief Executive of BCD in his or her consideration and determination of the application should an AHIP be required.

In compliance with the BCD policy - Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Consultation Requirements for Proponents 2010, MCH would like to extend an invitation to Aboriginal people who hold cultural knowledge relevant to the proposed project area and who can determine the significance of Aboriginal object(s) and/or place(s) in the area of the proposed project to register an interest in the consultation process for this project.

Horizons Golf Resort is the must-play golf course in the Port Stephens region open to members and visitors 7 days a week.

Age is no barrier for golfers with kids and adults playing it’s truly a game suitable from 6-99.Golfers can choose to walk the course or take a buggy.

It is never too late to take up this sport as it is perfect for staying fit through retirement.

The course has been receiving a lot of attention of late and is officially back in

the Australian Golf Digest Top 100 as well as the GOLF Course Guide Top 100.

With the course condition currently rated as “in excellent shape” with the fairways and greens in simply in the best condition that they have been in for years.

The team at Horizons are still working on the course and have some incredible future

plans, to make sure that they do their best to keep Horizons in Port Stephens as a firm Top 100 must play course.

The Graham Marsh/Ross Watson design moves through an extensive chain of wetlands and bushland, with many holes concluding on greens with significant contours calling for accurate approach play and precision putting.

The course plays habitat to a range of wonderful wildlife with regular sightings of koalas, kangaroos, echidnas and birdlife.

Making each game one which feasts the eyes while challenging the body and the brain.

Significant funds have been invested in the golf course over the past few years,
