ALICIA Cameron is a quiet achiever.

She has worked hard to achieve her goals and overcome what life has thrown at her and is someone that gives back.

When talking to Alicia, you can’t help but feel comfortable.

She wants to achieve big things in Port Stephens but understands that if we ask too much too soon, many will not engage.

In a few short months since the launch of Plastic Free Port Stephens Alicia has been recognised by Port Stephens Council as Port Stephens

Citizen of the year.

Plastic Free Port Stephens Founder and eco-warrior Alicia Cameron has been named Port Stephens Citizen of the Year for her work to educate the community on waste reduction and alternatives to single-use plastics. She is one of 9 community members and

Single use plastic is one of the major environmental issues facing the planet today.

“It’s about making small changes,” she said.

“The price at the markets for bonito has nose-dived some $9 per kilo and Tasmanian lobsters which once brought $100 per kg at the wharf are now lucky to go for around $40 per kg at the fishmarkets,” he added.

Robert, who also operates a trawler out of Raymond Terrace, is pinning his hopes on

a good run of prawns.

“It has been a terrible season for prawns in the Hunter as they usually don’t run without a flow in the river. With the Hunter runoff now coming down, we hope that the prawns will make their move,” he said. ”The next week or two should be good,” he added. “ We are also waiting for the ‘February dark’,” he said, “As the Myall River will hopefully bring with it the much sought after prawns which command high prices,” he concluded.

Allyn River Rescue

By Julie MCKIMM SUNDAY’S bad weather certainly made for a busy day for Port Stephens SES both within the area and assisting neighbouring agencies.

The unit received a request to assist the Dungog Unit with the rescue of a teenage boy from the Allyn River at Allynbrook.

The request to assist was due to the complexity and potential danger of the job.

The boy had been kayaking and whilst trying to retrieve his kayak from the water, lost his footing and was swept away.

He then became trapped by the compression against timber in the river.

The multi-agency Flood Rescue included Dungog, Singleton and Port Stephens SES alongside Fire Rescue Dungog, Dungog Police and Ambulance NSW.

The teen was freed by an SES Swiftwater Rescue Technician, then hauled to safety by a combined rescue team.

Port Stephens Unit Commander, David Douglas, told News Of The Area, “The casualty was very cold when

removed from the water and was treated by ambulance personnel on-site.”

“He was very lucky and is now safe”.

The current rain event has resulted in some local road closures and an increase in river flows.

The SES would like to remind everyone not to enter flood waters and to wear a life jacket whenever on or around water, it could save your life.

Another good reminder is to observe road and flooding signage and do not cross flooded roads or bridges.

Thanks to medical research and advancements in treatments most of these people now survive, however, the diagnosis, treatment and impact on lives during this time can be emotionally and physically overwhelming.

Living in a community which is relatively remote from major treatment centres sees patient face additional challenges.

From Tomaree it is an hour’s drive or more to treatment in hospitals in Newcastle.

Many of those on

treatment for breast cancer are unable to undertake driving themselves to treatment and the drive home after treatment which can leave patients feeling even more tired and sick is dangerous.

The Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group takes on driving patients to and from appointments as well as offering a host of other support services to women undergoing treatment.

From wigs and getting the house cleaned to lawn mowing and face to face support for those on treatment, the Tomaree Breast Cancer

Support Group is there.

The ladies from the support group offer friendly faces, understanding and care when women in our area are facing breast cancer.

The Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group has kicked off the Year of the Rat in style with a fundraising dinner at Sri Malaysian Restaurant.

Breast Cancer Support Group Driving An Extra Mile

ONE in four Australian women will be diagnosed with cancer before they reach the age of 75.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting Australian women.

Approximately 19,535 Australians will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019, which is a staggering average of 53 people every day.

These are sobering statistics.

Ones which impact the lives of families and communities.

HOW much time do you spend in your local town centre? Whether you work there, shop there or just go for a visit — towns are an important place for our community to come together and feel connected.

Throughout February, we’re asking the community of Raymond Terrace about their vision for the town, which will help us to create a Public Domain Plan.

We’re asking people to tell us what they value in the town centre — whether it’s beautiful or creative spaces, better public amenities and facilities, a safer or greener town centre, or more meeting places for people to stop and enjoy.

We’re also asking what areas of our town need a little more love. We want to hear from everyone — families, workers, seniors, young people, business owners and visitors alike.

We already have $1 million set aside as part of our Port Stephens 2020 projects for smaller projects to revitalise and beautify Raymond Terrace this year.

Another great initiative for local women who have a goal they want to achieve in 2020 is our International Women’s Day Scholarships.

These scholarships support Council’s efforts to create a community where women are safe, healthy, equally represented and valued for their contribution to society.

Erosion at Beach

Newcastle City Council identifies climate change, urban development and erosion as just some of the issues facing the coastline.

Every coastal Council in NSW including Port Stephens, and Newcastle City Councils are required to prepare a Coastal Management Program (CMP) under NSW Government legislation, with a scoping study mandated as part of completing the process.

Newcastle’s CMP ranges across the coastline from Glenrock to Stockton Beach, while also accounting for the lower part of the Hunter River estuary.

Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said that while results of the study may come as little surprise to many residents, it was an important and mandated step in developing a long-term plan to manage our coastline.

“The Coastal Management Program will give us the approval we need from the NSW Government to implement long-term

CLIMATE change, weather and previous changes to the coastline are all playing a part in the erosion at Stockton Beach.

The beach is one of the hardest hit areas of coastline with locals concerned about their residences and the future of the beach.

Previous sandbagging and replacing the sand on the beach to prevent further erosion has proved to be a fruitless exercise with rough seas continuing to erode the shoreline.

Over the past weekend the City of Newcastle took precautionary actions ahead of predicted large ocean swells and high tides with heavy rainfall predicted for the weekend.

The east coast low like conditions and a predicted 2-metre high tide on Sunday increased the likelihood of erosion at Stockton Beach, and potentially created more dangerous conditions for coastal activities.

‘jupiter’ Ascended

2019 was a big year for COPSY the year Port Stephens saw the launch of a new youth mental health and counselling service, ‘jupiter’.

The organisation is looking forward to 2020 being the year of consolidation and the launch of new school awareness workshops.

These workshops will focus on positive mental health for our youth.

Geoffrey Basser of COPSY told News Of The Area, “Our current business model relies heavily on sub-contracted parttime psychologists.

“COPSY pays them for booked appointments and collects any Medicare rebates to offset those costs.

“The service fills a gap and ensures that our local youth

has an accessible, affordable service which they can access without having long wait times or having to deal with any possible stigma.

“The jupiter service has seen 60 individuals for 170 individual counselling since its launch and it is anticipated that this figure will continue to rise,” he said.

As part of the ongoing improvement to the service, COPSY is working on the soundproofing of the two rooms where the service is provided.

COPSY needs to raise $100,000p.a. to continue providing this mental health counselling to Port Stephens youth.

The Organisation’s work is not without Government

support with the Department of Health NSW agreeing to fund a second extension to December 2020.

This funding will also be used to start the school workshops across Port Stephens.

The jupiter service is delivered by part-time psychologists: Jen Carter, Rhiannon Lang (currently on maternity leave), Claudia Riedell and Jenni Sheridan Lee, an Adolescent Counsellor.

Rebecca Reynolds started with ‘jupiter’ as part of her Master’s in Counselling course, and when she completed she subsequently joined the team as a Psychological Counsellor.

More recently, Jupiter has added a Mental Health social worker Lisa Swan, and they

PSWIB helps members establish, build and develop their business networks, share knowledge and skills creating opportunities for members to connect, inspire and support each other.

There are currently 54 members made up of sole

traders, small to medium businesses, corporate, gov, and Not FOr Profits.

The Group is active on social media sharing mentoring and other opportunities, and has a growing members directory on the website.

Newcastle, placed under the supervision of Clinical Psychologist Melissa Cox who also sits on the COPSY Board.

The course is clear for

jupiter; to deliver positive outcomes for youth mental health they need to become sustainable.

South Tomaree Community Association told News Of The Area, “We hope that the tangle bins will see a reduction in the number of birds that are caught in fishing lines.”

People also injure themselves on discarded fish hooks.

The Association funded the bins and are keen to see everyone do the right thing.

The bins are installed on Port Stephens Council poles

and have a soft top to help keep deposited fishing line within the bin in windy conditions.

Essentially the best thing we can all do when we are out and about is to take only photographs and leave only footprints, these tangle bins make it somewhat easier to meet this goal.

Fishers are urged to use the bins or to take any cut off fishing line home with them to dispose of responsibly.

Port Stephens Women in Business (PSWIB) is a networking group for women in businesses of all sizes which transcends business size and reduces isolation.

FISHING line and hooks left on our break walls and foreshores are a blight on the environment.

They harm wildlife and can cause injuries and will stay in the environment for years.

In Port Stephens we are fortunate that we have community groups ready to address issues which impact our wildlife and the environment.

The South Tomaree Community Association decided to tackle the issue of fishing tackle in our environment.

The group has paired with the Men’s Shed to create and install 3 tangle bins which is the pilot to a wider program of installation which will be based on the success of the units.

The 3 tangle bins are currently installed at Taylors Beach and at Birubi Beach adjacent to popular fishing spots.

The plans are to see additional tangle bins installed at Boat Harbour and Fisherman’s Bay. Christine Mitchell of the

NATURE STRIP POLITICS “My house is for sale and I’m really aware of the importance of street appeal. My nature strip looks like a bowling green, but my next door neighbour’s looks like the Amazon jungle. Can I just quietly mow it?”

AAH, navigating the politics of good neighbourly relations can be like tip toeing through a minefield. Well done for understanding the importance of street appeal when listing a property. I thoroughly commend your efforts and sellers such as yourself live in hope that your neighbours will think likewise. But that’s not always the case. Have you chatted with them about perhaps maintaining their strip, even if it’s just for the time you’re on the market? If like many, they drive into the garage and enter their home from there, or by a side entrance and just don’t notice the front, they may be completely unaware that their strip has returned to its natural state. If you haven’t broached the subject, I think you should – explain that it benefits the overall impression of your property which in turn is appealing to buyers. If you sense they can’t really be bothered, why not dangle the sweetener that you’re happy to maintain it for them until you sell. That way you’re not relying on them which can lead to tricky relations if they don’t follow through.

Parkinson’s Support Group Meet and Greet

IN Australia, approximately 37 new cases of Parkison’s Disease are diagnosed daily with over 14,000 new cases expected to be identified for the year 2020 according to Parkinson’s Australia.

With Parkinson’s prevalence increasing threefold over the age of 65, the growth rate of people living with the disease is expected to increase drastically as the Australian population ages over the coming years.

For the people of the Tomaree Peninsula living and caring for those with Parkinson’s there will be the first meeting of the Tomaree

Parkinson’s Support Group (TPSG) for 2020 on Thursday, 20 February.

The meeting will take place at 1:30pm in the Waratah Room at the Tomaree Community Centre, Salamander Bay. There will be a guest speaker from Services NSW on the Government’s initiatives and rebates that are available to locals living with Parkison’s.

Bob Crampton, President of the TPSG, said that the meet and greet was all about creating a sense of community and enjoying the hospitality of the group.

“Not only is it a great opportunity for our members to gain a real benefit from

the presentation from Services NSW there will be an exercise program running at the conclusion,” said Mr Crampton.

“There’ll also be light refreshments and a chance for attendees to socialise.”

The TPSG meetings will be held on the third Thursday of each month in the Waratah Room at the Tomaree Community Centre.

Dear Mr TK,

Mr TK, you are asking the wrong person here. My kids actually tell me that our dog is the favourite child, and I very rarely correct them. I mean, a dog's love cannot be replicated. A spouse or child is never going to greet you with the exhuberence that the family dog exhibits. Ever. Dogs curl up on your lap on cold evenings.

They tuck their head under your arm when you are feeling sad. They keep you company on long walks. They don't answer back. They never complain about leftovers. A dog gives unconditional love, Mr TK. Unconditional. And you, in return, must give it back. If the dog was in considerable pain, or untreatable, then of course you would follow your vet's advice, but in this case it sounds as though all you are thinking about is your sun lounge and a few Pina Coladas. What sort of person are you?

I think your wife should go on a cruise and your share of the money should go towards your furry friend. That's what I think. If you do take 'the farm' option, your wife will never forgive you. Then your life won't be worth living either.

WASZPS Nationals

PORT Stephens Sailing and Aquatic Club recently hosted the 2020 Australian WASZP Nationals.

If you saw some tiny raft darting around the Bay you were probably watching the WASZPs. The 2020 Australian WASZP Nationals in the bag with the visiting New Zealanders giving the Aussies a thrashing as they claimed all three podium positions overall.

One New South Wales youngster Jack Ferguson shone in the series clinching the Australian Championship in fourth position.

The Regatta has been hailed as very successful.

Marc Ablett Global Sales/Marketing/Events manager of WASZP told News Of The Area, “It was an amazing experience taking the WASZP Nationals to Port Stephens Sailing & Aquatic Club, the class mantra of only sailing in the best locations around the world was in full force here.

“Salamander Bay is certainly one of the most amazing places to host an event. The 42 sailors from all States and 3 Countries enjoyed the event immensely,” he said.

THE Little Athletics Regional Carnival was held over two weekends one very wet and wild and the other with extreme heat with temperatures scorching at over 40 degrees.

After the cancellation of the event due to heat, the event went ahead last weekend despite the stormy weather.

Last weekend was the last opportunity for the children to compete in order to qualify for State.

Tomaree local Shari Hurdman and her training partner Aileesha Oudshoorn cleaned up achieving 6 gold and 1 silver medals.

Anja Hurdman told News Of The Area, “They are both coached by Bob

Walkley who is the President of Port Stephens Little Athletics Club.

“His dedication and personalised training has certainly paid off.”

Considering the atrocious conditions their results were impressive.

Shari who attends Tomaree High School had some impressive wins taking out three first places in the Under 13’s she came First in the 100 metre sprint in 13.28 seconds, first in the 200 metre event in 26.50 seconds and first in the Long Jump, jumping an impressive 4.68 metres.

Aileesha Oudshoorn in the under 11’s also took out three first places and one second.
