WHILE the world’s problems with the pandemic seem to endlessly roll on with political, economical and social instability it’s easy to forget to take a deep breath and look at the trees sometimes.

For Guy Innes and some environmentally conscious Port Stephens’ constituents that’s exactly what they’re doing to ensure that their backyards aren’t neglected in the process.

Guy and his crew have been busy of late tending to the Mambo Wetlands Reserve site to help regenerate some of the native vegetation along the frontlines on the corner of Port Stephens and Foreshore Drive.

Swanson calls for affordable housing Everybody’s Home, about 300 people in the Paterson electorate are experiencing homelessness, while 3500 affordable housing options are required in the area.

Ms Swanson said immediate action was required to tackle the problem.

“We are in the middle of an economic crisis that will soon lead to a housing crisis. There was already a shortage of social housing and affordable homes before the pandemic hit.”

“As unemployment goes up in the coming months we’re going to see more and more people struggle to pay their mortgage and rent,” Ms Swanson said.

“The need in our community is clear. This week I met with a local homelessness service provider who has to turn away about 200 people every year.”

Speaking to News Of The Area, Ms Swanson called on the Federal Government to work with the NSW State Government and the private sector to fund the construction of more social housing and the repair of rundown facilities, as well as an expansion of the First Home Loan Deposit scheme.

“This would be a win-win. It would provide work for thousands of tradies and put a roof over the head of Australians who desperately need it.”

“In times of economic crisis, housing construction has often played a key role in economic recovery. During the GFC the former Labor Government invested $5.6 billion in the construction of nearly 20,000 new social

housing dwellings and the renovation of a further 80,000 existing properties,” she said.

Ms Swanson said it was important for the community to remember that their local area is not ‘immune’ to homelessness.

“Homelessness isn’t a big city issue – there are 300 people who are homeless right here in the Paterson electorate.”

“I think many people in our community would be surprised at the level of homelessness and insecure housing we have. That’s because homelessness is often invisible, with many

Land carers praised for amazing work HUNTER Local Land Services has praised the efforts of ‘land carers’ in the Port Stephens and Myall Coast regions for embracing the challenges of the past year, and continuing to make a real difference to the environment in their local communities.

2020 marks the 30th anniversary of Landcare in the Hunter, a year marked by drought, bushfires and an unprecedented pandemic.

Despite the challenges, more than 1000 community members have participated in over 40 workshops and field days organised through Landcare in the Hunter in the past year.

Topics covered ranged from soil health and landscape rehydration, shorebird conservation, bee keeping, bushfire recovery, biodiversity conservation and tree planting.

The CMP proposes a mix of immediate and longerterm measures to replenish the heavily eroded beach and protect Stockton’s coastal assets.

Longer-term actions under the Stockton CMP include a mass offshore marine sand nourishment campaign of 2.4 million cubic metres and an ongoing 10-year maintenance program to provide the necessary protection for Stockton.

THE City of Newcastle’s longterm plan to manage erosion along Stockton’s coastline has been certified by the State Government.

This has been welcomed

by Council and the community.

The certification of the Coastal Management Plan (CPM) will see work begin on implementing the approved actions, including $4 million towards a sand nourishment program as well as the construction of essential infrastructure to prevent further erosion and risk to public and private assets.

Port Businesses Innovate and Collaborate

COVID-19 has seen many businesses pivot and add to their capabilities.

Brodie Fairhall of Tomago Aluminium didn’t imagine he would be developing a boutique manufacturing industry to meet a medical need pre-pandemic.

But the innovation engineer works daily solving complex problems for Tomago,

so using 3D printing to create face shields to combat COVID-19 was a natural progression for Brodie.

During the lockdown Brodie was like many of us working from home where he anticipated that Australia may end up in a similar situation to other nations experiencing a shortage of PPE. Brodie’s manager, Mal Muddle, authorised the use of some plastics

products from Tomago to test prototypes.

Mal Muddle told News Of The Area, “Tomago was very happy to sponsor Brodie with time and materials for the project.”

“A project like this is not anything Tomago ever thought we would be involved with, but manufacturers in Australia have to be innovative to survive, and supporting Brodie to create an innovative

solution to a problem that would help frontline workers was something we didn’t even have to think about.”

Brodie said once he decided to develop face shields, he contacted hospitals, doctors and Members of Parliament to determine the best approach and to find out about requirements.

“I got stonewalled at every turn, because so many people

were trying to do the same thing,” Brodie explained.

“So I thought it made sense to form an alliance and work together.

“We formed the Open Manufacturing Alliance which now has 307 members who have combined to make 50,000 face shields in the past few weeks.”

Brodie said the Alliance was formed of individuals who have 3D printers at home, as well as medium to large companies, some with hundreds of printers, or printer “farms”.

A few medical organisations are also involved.

“There were so many hoops to jump through.

“People on the ground were telling us they needed equipment but procurement officers were telling us they didn’t,” he said.

“The 3D community was so keen to help and individuals were making the shields, but ironically we couldn’t give them away, as hospitals weren’t sure if they were allowed to use them from individual suppliers.”

Some large medical companies became involved in the Alliance and were able to get Therapeutic Goods Administration approval for a design that people in the Alliance began producing.

“Once we had TGA approval and could sell the product, suddenly there was demand.”

Brodie said his role morphed from manufacturing product, to managing a huge team of volunteers.

“That was a challenging role and it’s not my area of expertise.

“People were all enthusiastic but managing volunteers can be challenging,” he said.

Now that the Alliance is operating well, Brodie is keen to progress work with Newcastle makers Sparkhouse, operated by health professionals who are working on creating a ventilator.

Some of the parts will be made with a 3D printer.

Brodie has predicted that the COVID-19 outbreak should have proven to Government and business that it is possible to democratise manufacturing.

“It is now obvious that we are capable of creating a model of quick response in the manufacturing sector, and this should help in future crisis situations where people will be able to learn from this experience, and understand and accept that it is possible to team up and manufacture products locally using innovation.”

Mal said it would be interesting to see the long-term impacts of boutique manufacturing in Australia.

“I think we now realise that there are industries and people who have skills that can ramp up and respond very quickly.”

“Normally we don’t ask locally for problems to be solved because we automatically look to China for cheaper parts or solutions.

“But this experience might change that,” said Muddle.

Homelessness a local issue

HOMELESSNESS services in Port Stephens say that a lack of affordable housing is only one of a number of factors as to why more than 300 people are experiencing homelessness in the Paterson electorate.

Petra Ossen is the Manager of the Yacaaba Centre in Nelson Bay, a service which provides referrals and counselling services to those in need.

She said that reasons for homelessness in the area were wideranging.

“It is very broad.

Family or relationship breakdown are big factors. Sometimes it is a loss of job or income, particularly now with COVID. Because in our area a lot of jobs rely on tourism and hospitality, we are seeing more people without work.

The other factor is the cost of rentals,” she said.

Ann Fletcher, the Assistant Manager of Port Stephens Family

and Neighbourhood Services in Raymond Terrace, helps run a variety of earlyintervention programs aimed at the homeless or those at risk of becoming homeless.

She said that domestic violence is a large contributing factor to the issue of homelessness locally.

“Domestic violence is part of the story of the majority of our clients. For quite a large number of women and children and youth in particular, it is the main reason why they are homeless,” she said.

Mrs Fletcher also said that low levels of welfare payments made it difficult for many to afford to rent.

“The other thing for me, is the levels of the Centrelink benefits.

People can’t exist on what they receive through the Centrelink benefit.”

“At the moment, with the COVID supplement, that will help some people manage, however, it still isn’t being factored in in the calculation

q of weekly income for someones affordability to rent,” she said.

By Marian SAMPSON RONALD McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Northern NSW is hosting their first ever Raise Love-a-thon and is calling on the community to raise $50,000 for seriously ill children and their families.

Until 17 August, individuals, community groups and businesses can join the Raise Love-athon and help provide a home away from home for families in need.

COVID-19 has had a significant impact, restricting the charity’s ability to raise the vital funds needed to help keep families close together. So RMHC made the decision to move its annual Raise Love Ball online.

RMHC Northern NSW CEO, Ross Bingham, told News Of The Area, “Despite

the constraints of COVID-19 he is excited to see the online event come together and provide ongoing support to those in need.

“The world around us is changing, but childhood illness doesn’t halt and RMHC have families that still need our help,” he said.

“Isolation, homeschooling, and the constant fear of infection isn’t new for families who need RMHC – it’s a way of life, often for months and even years while their child is seriously ill or injured.”

Parents of children who have had cancer understand lockdown more than many, because their families have lived through lockdowns.

One mother described having lived through three lockdowns.

As a parent she is looking anxiously at COVID-19 in the community.

It is a fact that many are more impacted by the pandemic than others – but we tend not to think about young people or cancer patients.

“That’s why we are looking beyond COVID-19 to create the Raise Love-a-thon event, which we hope will raise $50,000 to fund 370 nights at Ronald McDonald House,” he said.

COVID-19 cases on our doorstep in Newcastle LAST week we saw a rise in COVID-19 cases on our doorstep in Newcastle — we know what to do and will continue to follow the NSW Government’s public health orders, physically distance and get tested when we feel unwell.

Telehealth while Pandemic is here Telehealth has been a new way for many of us to access health professionals during the pandemic.

TELEHEALTH has been a new way for many of us to access health professionals during the pandemic.

For many it has been seen as a blessing, with the advent of widespread use of technology to see our general practitioners and specialists saving us long journeys, and waiting time in surgeries and hospitals.

Telehealth has made the workplace safer for healthcare workers too, limiting the number of people that they are being exposed to during the pandemic.

Dr Paul Craven works in paediatrics with Hunter New England Health, and he has been using telehealth to supplement face to face appointments with patients for a long time.

Using telephones and videos he has been “seeing” patients through outreach in the north and other areas of the State from John Hunter Hospital.

He sees patients at the beginning of life but believes that there is no barrier for telehealth to allow for care at all stages of life.

Dr Craven told News Of The Area, “COVID-19 switched the way healthcare is being delivered overnight with an increase from 70 to 700 telehealth consultations delivered in one week.”

The feedback has been positive, with less disruption to work being one positive cited.

He is a great proponent for telehealth and believes that it allows specialists to work with local services to deliver great outcomes for patients.

Of course there are pros and cons; “When you see a patient face to face you can see if they are well.”

“I think that it is really important that it is right for the patient,” he said.

Telehealth models may include a visit from a district nurse providing observations or be conducted with a general practitioner and a specialist working together.

He believes that we will see a review of systems to find the very best information technology support for telehealth, and that it will evolve into the future.

Community Calls for Ammonium Nitrate to move or reduce

THE massive and devastating blast in Lebanon’s capital Beirut has left a path of death and destruction.

While the circumstances of the storage of the 2,750 tonnes of explosive ammonium nitrate are not repeated here, storage of a far greater quantity of the chemical is stored locally.

Ammonium Nitrate events include a Texas fertiliser plant in 2013 which killed 15 people which was ruled deliberate, and another accidental explosion at a chemical plant in Toulouse, France, in 2001 that killed 31 people and injured 2,500.

Kooragang Island has long been home to a large stockpile of ammonium nitrate.

In Beirut the explosion has already killed more than 130 people and injured more than 5,000.

The city resembles a war zone of epic proportions.

While many mourn, locally others are looking at the possible impact of the stores on Kooragang Island with a

renewed appreciation of the possible outcome of a disaster.

The Orica Company website says, “Within Australia the production, storage and transport of ammonium nitrate

by Orica and others is heavily regulated and monitored.

“In addition to these regulations and our own rigorous approach to safety and risk management, our operations at Kooragang Island are regularly inspected by authorities.

“In the Kooragang Island site’s 51-year history there has not been a single incident involving the storage of AN.” News Of The Area understands the Newcastle Stockpile is between 6,000 to 11,000 tonnes compared to the 2,750 tonnes which has devastated Beirut.

The Stockton Community Action Group (SCAG), has been calling for the Orica plant to be relocated, or its stockpiles of ammonium nitrate to be significantly reduced for a long time.

Authority, NSW Police and the Department of Planning.”

“SafeWork NSW also conducts periodic spot checks via its post licence verification programs, throughout the licence term.

“Environment protection licences for these facilities also include strict conditions to manage risks to the environment and human health, including regular inspections of all licensed premises to ensure compliance with licence conditions.”

Pickleball Popping at Port Stephens

PICKLEBALL is one of the fastest growing sports across the globe with over 3 million players in the United States of America alone.

It’s a hybrid of tennis, table tennis and badminton with a smaller playing surface to allow for greater court coverage for all ages.

In recent years the sport has seen an uptick in participation in Australia with over 1,500 players across all states.

For Margaret Thompson, Coordinator of the Pickleball Seniors Group at the Nelson Bay PCYC, it’s really starting to take-off locally with residents across greater Port Stephens chasing a game and wanting to be involved.

“We’re getting so much interest week-to-week about the sport and how people can come and get a game with us,” said Ms Thompson.

“At the moment we simply don’t have the court space or room to bring new members into our group which is a real shame.

“We’ve been setting up our own courts with tape in the small hall at the PCYC!”

SANDIE Lowndes and Pam Cembala teamed up to enter this year’s Karuah RSL Bowling Club Championship Pairs, making history on Sunday 2 August as the first ladies team to win the Club’s Major Pairs.

In fact, it’s believed that they are the first ladies team in the State to win a Major Pairs championship under the new membership structure which allows women to enter what were previously men’s championship events.

The membership of Karuah RSL Men’s Bowling Club voted earlier this year to follow the Bowls NSW initiative in changing to an

‘open gender’ membership policy, a move which allows women to join and play certain events with men, including Major Pairs.

Dave Austin, President of Karuah RSL Bowling Club, said, “This result represents a significant step for Karuah ladies to be part of the new structure of our Bowling Club, and let’s hope, helps us along the path for the amalgamation of Men’s and Ladies bowls in the future, as it is already the case in most other states.”

In the finals, Ms Lowndes and Ms Cembala played Trevor Davies and Brenden Revell (Skip) and it was a very close game throughout.

By Mitch LEES THE Medowie Marauders have bounced back from last week’s nail biting loss to the Reds by putting Waratah to the sword 39 to 25.

It was full steam ahead for the Marauders at the outset as they kicked off to the Tahs and applied the blowtorch to wave after wave of Waratah attack.

Their defensive efforts were rewarded immediately with a penalty within range for Captain Eric Tolhurst who slotted the pill over the posts for an early 3 point lead.

From the restart the Marauder pack worked tirelessly around the ruck linking phase after phase of possession with Jessey Bridge turning the Tahs on their heels
