LOCAL small business is buzzing after the latest NSW State Government announcements of easing COVID-19 restrictions.

Tattoo and massage parlours, gyms, dance and yoga classes as well as other recreational facilities have been given the green light to reopen from Saturday, 13 June.

There will be some restrictions around numbers of clients with 10 people allowed per class or session and up to 100 people allowed in an indoor facility.

The news is most welcome for those businesses in Port Stephens

POLICE are investigating after an attempted armed robbery at Medowie last week.

About 8.35pm (Wednesday 3 June 2020), a 34-year-old male employee was inside a takeaway shop on Ferodale Road, Medowie, when a man entered the store and threatened him

with a knife.

The armed man demanded cash before fleeing empty handed after the attendant grabbed a nearby kitchen utensil and challenged him.

Officers from Port Stephens-Hunter Police District attended a short time later and established a crime scene.

The man is described as being aged in his late teens,

between 160cm-170cm tall, with his face covered.

Anyone who may have CCTV or dashcam footage from the nearby area between 8pm and 9pm yesterday, or who may have information which could assist detectives is urged to contact Raymond Terrace Police on 4983 7599 or call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

New Landscapes from Sand Movement

THE recent east coast low has resulted in changes and movement in the sand throughout the Myall and Port Stephens region..

Further inland a large banksia at Corlette’s Conroy Park has been lost as a result of erosion of the bank and one of the Norfolk Island Pines has a large section of its root system exposed.

John Simpson holds a science degree and has worked in coastal management for 35 years, he is a local property owner who has a wealth of experience in sea level and climate change issues.

Mr Simpson told News Of The Area, “The sea level is rising; exactly what that rise is in Port Stephens I am not exactly sure in Newcastle it is 50-60mm; there is a standing rule about coastal recession that in a static environment like the Bay, with residual sand masses, that a rise in water level will result in a corresponding land recession of 150 times the height of the rise.

level will effectively see a 1.5m advance in shore recession, so a 30cm rise would see a three metre shore loss.”

“We are seeing the incremental change in water level to create a new stable shoreline – this typically happens during storm surges such as the East Coast Low and the tails of cyclones,” he said.

Mr Simpson believes that the best information available on rising sea levels predicts a rise of .6 a metre by the year 2100.

Gordon Grainger from the Myall River Action Group last week noted some recent television coverage where to do with the pending dredging of the eastern channel, providing fresh sand for Jimmys Beach sand renourishment and the flow of fresh oceanic water into the river

and lake system.

For the Myall region, the dredge is now in the water and work has begun.

“It is anticipated to stay until end September and will provide quick and safe access to the Port for recreational craft as well as maintaining our river in its pristine condition,” Gordon Grainger told News Of The Area.

In our immediate region,areas at risk from erosion include Stockton at the north and south of the Bight, Jimmy’s Beach, Corlette, Shoal Bay, Salamander Bay and Soldiers Point.

Stockton Beach is the largest moving sand mass in the Southern Hemisphere with dunes reaching heights of over 30 metres with slopes of up to 60 degrees.

Street Library Arrives At Anna Bay

THE Anna Bay Seven Day Makeover is on hold thanks to COVID-19 as is the planned makeover for the Medowie town centre, however locals in Anna Bay are not letting a virus make them lose all momentum.

The makeover united the community and has created a sense of pride in the township.

The South Tomaree Community Association (S.T.C.A.) has delivered a street Library which offers free access to books and a book swap centre.

A street Library is a community service aimed at helping to provide free books without travel.

The community association has 45 members and are a non political group

whose purpose is to help locals with any issues within their community.

The tiny Library is being kindly hosted by local business Anna Bay Surf Bike and Skate.

Chris Mitchell President of S.T.C.A. told News Of The Area, “It has taken the association around 12 months to get the street Library launched and without Anthony Fenwick coming forward to house the street Library it would not be a reality.

“The concept is borrow a book, return a book, leave a book.

“COVID-19 has been hard on our town and now we need people to have a reason to come out and support our local businesses,” she said.

Anthony Fenwick of Anna Bay Surf Bike and Skate said, “There is a street Library at the train station at Islington

and it works well, adding the street Library is just about community. They might sit down and have a coffee and might read a book, it might get people back into reading, it is about the whole community.”

Anthony known locally as Fen has seen many things impact business this year, the droughts, the fires let alone COVID-19 he is hopeful that the tide has turned and we will all have the confidence to get back out and support our local businesses.

Anna Bay businesses have always been strong supporters of the community and housing the street Library at his business is just one more way that he can pay it forward for his community.

Proud second time Mother Jaimie Abbott told News Of The Area, “Harrison was eager to greet the world arriving six days before his due date.”

Harrison was born during COVID-19 restrictions with Jaimie’s partner being the only person able to visit her and the newborn at the hospital.

Harrison is brother to Harvey, with the two boys born 18 months apart.

The family also has one beautiful Labrador.

Councillor Abbott has already been back out and about attending the Aerospace announcement after the birth, however, she is looking forward to a break from work and getting to know Harrison.

The Councillor is the first woman to sit on Port Stephens Council while delivering not one but two babies during her term in office.

The Councillor has been a strong supporter of infrastructure for families and championed the fenced playground at Shoal Bay which is designed to make life easier for parents looking after multiple children.

While many kids no doubt enjoyed the chance to get some extra time away from school, the social and educational needs of one of Australia’s next generations was coming under strain.

With school now back in full swing Wirreanda PS Principal Philippa Young is thankful that her local community got right behind the online educational programs made available even though it was a steep learning curve for many.

“On behalf of the teaching staff, thank you to our parents for their commitment to the learning of their children which has been a difficult task to juggle along with all the other complexities of work, childcare and household tasks,” said Ms Young.

ASSUMING you both have the means to service your loans, this is a great time to buy and build. Good building blocks are still available, but in higher density areas, their scarcity is pushing prices up, but there’s still great value to be had. Building gives you control over how much you outlay – allowing for blowouts of course!

Having either purchased an existing plan that suits your needs or designing from scratch, gives you what you genuinely want and for blocks beneath $350,000 and a total house and land spend of under $750,000 stamp duty is not applicable.

This is in addition to the $10,000 firsthome buyers grant. Change of land for Cop Shop q Former Police Minister Mike Gallacher with Doreen Bradley.

COMMUNITY members around the Tilligerry area are puzzled by the decision to site a new $1.5M station on a block of land on the main road near the Lemon Tree Passage Library.

Doreen Bradley OAM,a 50 year campaigner for a Station said, “We have had Politicians, the Police Minister and numerous meetings about this and RAF Park at Tanilba Bay is where it was agreed it was to be built.”

“Obviously there has been no community consultation and a total breakdown of process somewhere within the system,” Ms Bradley said.

Councillor Steve Tucker said, “Council gifted the land in RAF Park for both the Fire Station and the Ambulance Station and we assumed that

the police would want their station next to the other two emergency services.”

“It’s a waste of around $500,000 of taxpayers’ money buying an old house, knocking it down and preparing a site

on the side of a hill,” he said.

“The RAF Park land is free, flat and a ‘walk-up start’ as far as construction goes.It’s just sitting there and all they have to do is ask for it,” Cr Bradley said.

My work colleague says everything he is doing out loud and it is incredibly distracting.

He will count his emails and then debrief about them, talk about a meeting that he missed, discuss the easterly swell as he prepares for weekend activities, ponder riots, chat about morning tea, take long phone calls, sigh and chews his nails.

Even his ringtone drives me nuts. It is a quacking duck that makes me jump every time I hear it. It is quite literally driving me insane.

Mrs JD, Boat Harbour Dear Mrs JD, That does sound very frustrating. You obviously have an open plan office which is great in theory but a surefire way to end up manifesting into significant downtime as you all negotiate and work around each other's workplace styles.

Some people are quiet workers. They sit there, totally absorbed in what they are doing, hardly noticing as the minutes tick down to 5pm freedom. Others are like caged animals.

I don't want to be seen as sexist here, but in the offices I have worked in, it is most often the men who seem unable to sit for long periods of time.

They pace, they rock in their chairs, they tap their pens to The Velvet Underground's Sister Ray (which goes on forever), they stare out the window like seven-year-olds waiting for little lunch and on it goes until very soon their noise is all you can hear. You become attuned to it.

Frustrated by it. Incensed. Stir crazy.

It gets to the point where you give them errands just to get them away from your general vicinity.

I think this has become a lot worse since a semi return to normal following the COVID-19 lockdown.

Many of us got to enjoy the space and serenity of our homes, so coming back to the workplace was quite literally an abuse of the senses. Our bodies and minds were attuned to chill mixes on Spotify, sipping herbal tea, doing some sneaky meditation, taking a quick breather in the sunshine and falling asleep on the outdoor lounge.

Heck, let's be open and transparent here - sneaking in a 2pm drink or two, justifying it with that great adage to write drunk and edit sober (since we didn't have to worry about drinking and driving -- we were already home in our pyjamas anyway).

Is there another space where you can relocate? When we were all working from home, I often went and sat in my car (though I did have to explain to the neighbours a few times that I was of sound mind).

It was like a vacuum of serenity - warm, comfortable and wonderfully silent. Worth a try if you get really desperate.

Future of Club and Future of Town very promising

COVID-19 has paused the Medowie Sport and Community Clubs opening, however, this isn’t stopping the enthusiasm or momentum behind seeing the Club deliver for the community.

Councillor Chris Doohan can be described as nothing less than passionate about the development and what it is bringing to, not just Medowie, but Port Stephens overall.

Councillor Doohan’s vision for the Club includes a future produce market on the site, live bands, bowling and watching sporting activities on Ferodale Sports Complex from the clubhouse.

The ex-serviceman is also wanting to see an additional War Memorial on the site given that the ANZAC Services have outgrown the park where the current town memorial is sited.

Cr Doohan’s vision sees the ANZAC Day March beginning at the current memorial and ending at the new facility which will allow ANZACS and their families and friends to share time together at the Clubhouse after the March.

Councillor Doohan does not want the Memorial at the Club to replace the existing War Memorial, rather to be a Memorial where respects are made on ANZAC Day at the end of the

Chris Doohan told News Of The Area, “The economy of Medowie is being boosted by developments, businesses entering into the business precinct and working with the hub at Williamtown, Medowie is becoming a place where you can live and have a job here, and that’s terrific.

“The growth has always been planned, for Medowie, we have a 7-eleven, a childcare centre and

opened prior to the lockdown they would have been bankrupt, we have lost two of the original operators and those still in the game need to get their businesses salvaged, one is still extremely interested and a second potential business looking at the opportunity.

“Once the contracts are signed the Club can be up and operating within three to four weeks after the final tender,” he said.

Landcare Back on Ground

The weather has brought the weeds on however all the recent rain will make it easier to remove weeds with tap roots.

Landcare addresses environmental issues including erosion, invasive species and rubbish.

Lionel Morton Oval Unveil LIONEL Morten Oval has officially revealed its new all-inclusive sporting oval and facilities thanks to grants from the Australian Government’s Move It AUS program, Australian Cricket Infrastructure Fund and Port Stephens Council.

The upgrades to Lionel Morten Oval now provide amenities for all genders and abilities creating an accessible and inclusive space meeting state sports association standards and improving inclusion and health and wellbeing within the community.

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer recognises the positive impact these upgrades will have on the local community.

“The new facilities will enhance the lives of Karuah locals now and into the future by creating a modern, inclusive and accessible space for all — reducing barriers of

gender and physical ability.

“Lionel Morten Oval forms a major part of the town’s identity and sport is an integral part of this community — these new facilities will enhance participation and equality and inclusiveness for all,” Mayor Palmer said.

The funding has provided amenities for female participants, accessible amenities for all users, a separate referee room for officials of all genders, grounds to meet state sport association standards and a location for all users to keep physically active and socially connected.

Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie said he was delighted to deliver the new inclusive facility for the Karuah community and in particular the Karuah Cricket Club and Karuah Rugby League Club.

Australian and sporting association standards, allowing local sporting clubs and the local public school the ability to host sporting events and encourage visitors to the area which will also support and increase sport and physical recreation.

Dr Gillespie added, “The local community has been following the construction, and I know as clubs return to training and kid’s sport recommences on 1 July they will be very pleased with these new facilities”.

Dr Gillespie also praised

the work undertaken by Port Stephens Council staff, GWH and all the local contractors who worked so hard to deliver the new clubhouse.

The Karuah Rural Fire Brigade also reached a new milestone today revealing a sneak preview of its new Fire Station expected to open ahead of the fire season.

The new station ensures local volunteer firefighters have vehicles, equipment and resources, which are fit for the future.

Mayor Palmer acknowledges the crucial role our RFS play in protecting the local community across the brutal fire season.

“The design of the Fire Station will meet the needs of the local community and it’s surrounds for many years to come.

“I want to thank the Australian Government, Australian Cricket Infrastructure Fund, the NSW Rural Fire Service for recognising the community of Karuah and investing into its future,” he said.

Doors opened for Karuah RSL

KARUAH RSL has re-opened as of Monday, 5 June, under tight Government restrictions.

Ross Parr, General Manager of Karuah RSL said, “We’re excited to re-open and allow up to 170 people to enter at a time.

“We’ll also have allocated doors for entry and exit.”

Mr Parr also stated that they will be checking each person’s temperature at the door prior to entry, and those whose temperatures are above 38 degrees celsius will be refused entry.

Mr Parr continued, “Those

entering will be required to apply hand sanitiser and to swipe their own membership cards in the reward centre.

“Non-members will need to scan their own driver’s licenses at the sign in desk, in addition to providing their phone numbers.

“Those requiring Keno or TAB can use the self-serve terminals, or ask the table service staff for a ticket who can then place a bet for them at the terminal,” said Mr Parr.

The courtesy bus will only operate on Friday and Saturday nights from 5pm and will do pick up and drop offs in Karuah only.

The restaurant has re-

opened but with limited bookings available, and to a maximum of eight people per booking.

It will also be doing delivery on Friday and Saturday nights, to Karuah only.

“There will unfortunately be no raffles, bingo, darts, entertainment or trivia at this point in time, but we will continue to review this as restrictions are updated,” Mr Parr said.

Bowls are proposed to start back up on Monday, 15 June.

senior community sporting organisations putting the kibosh on their 2020 seasons, some junior competitions are

getting closer to restarting.

The Hunter Junior Rugby Union (HJRU) has set Saturday, 25 July as the

official restart for their 2020 competition with an expected start to training announced in the coming weeks.
