Port Riders For Great Cycle Challenge

THE Great Cycle Challenge 2019 is on to help in the fight against kids cancer and Port Stephens will be represented amongst the riders who will participate from around the country.

There are currently over 12,000 riders registered to compete who have completed 333,501km so far in the Challenge nationally with $1,499,432 raised for childhood cancer research for better treatments so far.

Anyone can register to participate, simply set a goal, register and log your kilometres throughout October and most importantly ask people to support your ride.

Probus Clubs Visit Snowy

ONCE in a while the local Probus Clubs get together to deliver something unique for their members.

Recently 50 Probus members from five different Probus Clubs in Port Stephens

joined together for a trip to the Snowy Mountains, where they rode the chair lifts over thick snowfields, visited Lake Eucumbene, Adaminaby, Cooma Gaol, Gaden trout and salmon hatchery, tasted schnapps and gin at the local distillery, shared a picnic on

the banks of the Thredbo River, and visited the Snowy Mountains Hydro Scheme Centre, whilst staying at the Lake Jindabyne Hotel with amazing lakeside views.

It was all such a contrast of scenery to that found here in Port Stephens.

“There was such a

sharing of laughter as many memories were created in such a beautiful location whilst sharing breakfasts, lunches and dinners together.

Fran Wathen told News Of The Area, “When I organised this tour away I had no idea of how it would surpass all my expectations and my greatest

joy was to see the interaction between fellow Probus members, as we had so many happy times together.

“My thanks to all who came with me and made this trip so truly amazing”.

She believes that while group left Port Stephens not knowing most of

their fellow travellers, they returned having formed new friendships, broadening the local Probus community and promoting unity within the local community.

Port Cyclist in Great Cycle Challenge Supporting Childhood Cancer Research FROM Page 1

A group of Port cyclists are participating and raising funds for the cause.

Robert Miller one of the participants told News Of The Area, “Together the group will be riding most Saturdays and have set up group rides so that anyone with a decent level of competence can join in.”

Most of these rides are between 80 and 120km in length.

There are other days that we will ride too which can be viewed on the Great Cycle Challenge website https:// greatcyclechallenge.com. au/TeamDashboard “Our first group ride was on Saturday 5 October where we rode around the Bay and finished at Murray’s Brewery.”

Murray’s Brewery also sponsored the team.

The team is also holding a fundraising dinner is on 19 October at the Mexican Restaurant at the Bay

Breeze.

The cost is the price of the meal as the restaurant will donate $5 from every meal purchased to the Great Cycle Challenge.

“We are hoping to raise $7000, we actually raised over $24,000 last year and finished in 3rd place nationally, however it has been much harder this year.”

The team is aiming to ride 7000km with each rider having their own target, some as high as 1000km each.

Bridge Club Turns Twenty Tilligerry Bridge Club turns 20 this year and is currently compiling a scrapbook of photos and press clippings to preserve its history

SALLY ROBINSON was the founding force and after taking lessons she gathered up a group of interested locals and the infant club used the old school site as a venue. Ros Mac Kenzie, an experienced player, gave lessons and soon the Club boasted 16 members.

In the year 2000, the Club relocated to the Bowling Club from which it still operates. It has competitive sessions of a Monday and Wednesday and lessons for beginners.

The Tilligerry Bridge website which was up and running in 2010 gives full details of the Club and its

activities.

Each year in April a ‘conference’ of up to 130 players descends on Tilligerry to compete in various graded events. It well and truly puts the town on the map as well an injecting cash into the community.

The Bower Pathway Extension

THE McCloy Group have again entered into a new Works in Kind agreement with Port Stephens Council to continue the improvements and build the second leg of the shared pathway between Federation Drive and Kindlebark Drive ahead of projected council schedule.

The extension will see connections made to enable ease of access from The Bower and sections of Medowie, north of Boundary Road to Kindlebark Drive towards the Medowie township.

Work is expected to commence from 8th October with an anticipated completion of November 2019. This agreement will see McCloy Group manage the project to bring the build date forward from the original ranking as a Staging Threshold 2 Project under Port Stephens Council’s Developer Contributions Plan.

With new families coming to The Bower each day and growing interest in McCloy Groups new site on Medowie Road, The Gardens, McCloy’s saw the need for the continuation of the shared pathway connection to Kindlebark Drive as a higher

priority than it was currently ranked.

Charity Begins at Home Sister Cities Program Win

THE Red Cross Charity Shop arrived in Nelson Bay has been around three months ago.

It joins two other charity shops in the Nelson Bay Town Centre.

The Bay Red Cross Charity Shop stocks donated, new donated and donated branded products.

Every dollar spent in the Red Cross Shop goes into the organisations community programs, funding grants which are delivering programs like the Red Cross children’s breakfast clubs, the telechat program and funding men’s and women’s refuges here in Australia.

Tracie Walters of the Red Cross told News Of The Area, “The response to the store

locally has been very positive with locals telling us that they are very happy that we are here and they like the quality of the stock.”

When it comes to brands shoppers may be pleasantly surprised with what they find in store.

It changes every delivery so you may find a particular designer brand there one week and a different one the following week.

“You will find designer labels, mid range labels and cheaper labels.”

The shop also offers a loyalty program where shoppers are rewarded with a discount of 25% off your purchase after you fill your card with stickers.

This reporter walked out of the Red Cross Charity Shop with a brand new pair of designer branded summer sandals for $40 which normally retail for over $120, a couple of great brand new branded T-shirts and a great hat for the upcoming Melbourne Cup Lunch, which I wont say how much I paid for it but it looks like I spent far more than I did, which leaves me with more in the budget for that dress!

For that I am planning a day shopping through the fashion boutiques on Stockton and Magnus Streets in Nelson Bay. While I chose to buy new there were some great second hand buys in store for men, women and children.

Buying at charity shops is a sustainable way to shop, it reduces landfill and gives back to the community.

Next time you are in the Bay shopping through the great boutiques and specialty shops make sure you also check out the Red Cross Charity Shop on Stockton Street.

SISTER Cities Australia has awarded Port Stephens the best overall program award for 2018-19 jointly with Bundaberg (Qld) at this month’s AGM and Forum in Perth.

Port Stephens has a very active Sister Cities program which has seen the Seaside Singers tour Japan and local sailors compete across the globe.

Port Stephens Sister Cities secretary Kevin Atkins returned to the bay with trophies for Port Stephens and our sister cities Tateyama, Yugawara and Kushiro (Japan), and Bellingham (U.S.).

Kevin Atkins of the Port Stephens Sister Cities Committee told News Of The Area, “Our vision is world peace through citizen diplomacy,” Mr Atkins said.

“The key to our organisation’s value to our community lies not in huge funding, which we don’t have, but our ability to leverage off home hosting.”

In 2018/19, Port Stephens provided 259 nights of home hosting to international guests, while Port Stephens travellers enjoyed 346 nights of home hosting overseas.

He believes that home hosting is key as it underwrites the major costs of accommodation and travel but, more

A COMBINATION of the warm weather with some rain lately has caused an increase in the incidence of ticks in our area, with the deadly paralysis tick being quite common.

Prevention is the best way to protect our pets from succumbing to ticks and avoid a trip to the vet.

During the tick season it is best if you avoid their habitat as much as possible, don’t take your dog walking in bush or scrub areas, keep your lawns and shrubs short and remove any compost from your property where your animals roam.

Wildlife which is plentiful in our region acts as the ‘reservoir’ for the ticks which don’t seem to cause illness in the native species.

You should always check your pets daily along with anytime they return from being in areas where they may have been exposed to ticks.

Donna Gilroy from Medowie’s Noah’s Ark Vet Clinic told News of the Area

“Signs of tick poisoning include a change in the bark or meow, wobbliness or weakness in the legs, breathing problems and difficulty swallowing which can also cause the animal to vomit.

Once symptoms develop even with treatment recovery is by no means guaranteed, so in this case, prevention is always better than a cure.”

There are numerous tick prevention products on the market for your pets that can

be given orally, as a spot on or a worn collar, however your vet is the best person to recommend the most appropriate one for your pets.

Donna advised “If you find a tick on your animal, remove it and contact the vet. If you suspect your pet is affected, contact the vet even after they have closed so treatment can be started asap, but year round prevention is your key to peace of mind for you and your pet.”

LATE night drizzling rain and an 8mm downpour the following morning effectively blacked out the bushfire which consumed some 37 hectares of scrub behind Tanilba Shores retirement village on Friday 4th October.

Some 12 Rural Fire Service (RFS) and Fire & Rescue units attended the out-of-control blaze which was fanned by a stiff southerly wind.

Arsonists or a torched car are believed to be the cause of the fire at an early stage of investigation.

The retirement village and local homes were not under threat from the firefront but an emergency classification warning advised affected residents to ‘activate their survival plans’.

Amazing Idea About Anna Bay Makeover WHEN people come together with a common goal in mind, we can do amazing things. That’s the idea behind the 7 Day Makeover, which is headed to Anna Bay this November!

The makeover is the brainchild of David Engwicht from Creative Communities. It began as a way to empower communities to improve their places and spaces, creating a vibrant community with a strong economy.

David has taken this model all over Australia and New Zealand, transforming towns in just 7 days on a shoestring budget. And now, it’s Anna Bay’s turn.

We’re now calling on all residents of Anna Bay to get behind this people-powered initiative to help improve the town centre.

Whatever your age or ability, everyone can help in some way. No amount of time or contribution is too small.

I want to thank all of our passionate community members who have got behind the makeover already, with particular thanks to Councillor Sarah Smith for her strong advocacy for this project.

As a Council, we’ve committed $350,000 for revitalising the town centre of Anna Bay. We know it’s in need of some TLC and this is a great way that we can come together as a community to make it happen.

But before the makeover can kick off, David Engwicht will be in Anna Bay for an information night to explain how the makeover will work and how you can get involved. This will be held at Birubi Surf Club on 29 October 2019 and all are welcome to attend.
