By Andrea FERRERA IT was a sad day for Macksville Vinnies volunteers when they farewelled treasured friend Lyn Snowden into retirement at the Macksville Ex-Services Club.

Lyn has volunteered at Vinnies for over twenty years, as did her husband Terry, who retired earlier to play bowls.

After Terry retired, Lyn would often catch the bus from Valla Beach to Macksville, dedicated to her commitment

HOUSING availability is an ongoing challenge for the Nambucca Valley region, with areas suffering from a lack of rental properties and affordable housing options.

The popularity of the region as a seachange and treechange destination is undeniable and COVID-19 has accelerated the migration from the cities as people have embraced working from home.

On Friday, an independent report reflecting the community’s experiences of housing and the planning system in regional NSW was released by the NSW Government.

Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Rob Stokes said the

Regional Housing Taskforce report details feedback from consultation with more than 500 people across regional NSW. “The Regional Housing Taskforce’s report gives us a clear picture of the unique factors affecting housing in each regional community, and I want to thank every person who took part for their contributions,” Mr Stokes said.

“The report confirms COVID-19 has accelerated an existing trend of people moving from the city to the bush, and this has had an acute impact on regional housing markets.

“The findings tell us what regional communities need to better support their housing needs and I look forward to

The key issues raised in the findings report include: •Greater prioritisation on the

homes; • A need for collaboration between all levels of Government, the housing development industry and the community to develop the right type of housing where people need it; • Calls to speed up planning processes and reduce duplication, particularly where opportunities to provide housing are time-critical; and • Demand for more affordable and diverse housing in line with changing demographics, jobs growth, natural disasters, and migration trends.

“COVID-19 has affected so many businesses in NSW and even though we have a number of support measures in place, there are still some businesses under severe financial strain that aren’t eligible for assistance for a number of reasons. We want to plug that gap as much as we can,” Mr Tudehope said.

The Review Panel will include representatives from Revenue NSW, NSW Treasury and Service NSW and

will make recommendations on businesses’ eligibility for relevant support payments and grants.

It will consider a broad range of factors in determining whether a business has experienced financial hardship, with the Chief Commissioner of Revenue NSW to be ultimately responsible and make the final determination for applications.

“My message to small businesses is this – no matter what corner of the state you're in, we will be there with you all the way as we navigate this global health pandemic,” Mr Tudehope said.

Factors that the hardship panel will consider include, for example,

whether the business is an employer, in a highly impacted industry, in an LGA of concern or has unavoidable costs for which no other support is available.

Businesses will be back paid to the fortnight where they can demonstrate the required decline in turnover with the Panel.

Hardship applications for JobSaver are now open with hardship COVID business grants and Microbusiness grants to open later this month.

Providing more businesses with Covid-19 financial support A NEW Hardship Review Panel has been established to consider financial support for businesses experiencing financial hardship that do not qualify for COVID-19 business support measures.

The panel will assess on a case-by-case basis businesses which did not meet the eligibility requirements for the 2021 COVID-19 Business Grant, Microbusiness Grant and JobSaver payments.

Macksville Vinnies volunteer Lyn retires FROM Page 1

q Lyn Snowden, a long-time Macksville Vinnies volunteer, retires

to Vinnies.

Lyn was the ‘Craft Lady’, taking items home to repair and bringing back for sale.

She rarely missed a visit to her dear friend John at Elwood Upholstery in River Street, after her day at Vinnies.

Terry and Lyn have given much time to volunteering, including Meals on Wheels, both being members of The Valla Beach Vallarinas, entertaining residents in Aged Care Facilities and supporting the Museum at Nambucca Headland, where they continue to volunteer.

Lyn will be kept busy with her hobbies, including craft and no doubt continue to be involved in the community.

Vinnies volunteer Gai McKay said a few words as she presented Lyn with a gift.

“Such a pleasure to be here sharing with everyone, we’re all sad of course to be

farewelling our much-treasured Lyn, saying that, we’re most grateful for the years you’ve been volunteering.

“We’ve shared good times and on occasion sad times, no matter what we’ve always been there for

Janine Reed elected Deputy Mayor “Soon after I became involved in the Utungun area and was appointed to the trust that managed the Utungun Hall at the time.

“We began a production nursery and through this involvement I became involved in NSW Farmers and have worked hard for over thirty years to secure water access rights, particularly for farm dams.

“In 1995 we purchased a business in Macksville which originally focussed on radiator repairs and later branched out into mowers and other outdoor power equipment.

“We have almost completed the sale of this business to our employee and his wife, Brendan and Cilla Unterrheiner.”

Cr Reed has also been a proud campaigner for her community throughout her years.

“Both Barry and I have been members of the Macksville & District Chamber of Commerce and Industry and during this time we have seen many improvements in Macksville.

“During that time, we have seen wonderful additions to Riverside Gardens, refurbishment at Autumn Lodge and Lakeside Gardens and the commencement of the development at Fairway Gardens.

“The Board comprises great volunteers and during this time we have seen the workforce grow remarkably, but more excitingly, the development of the registered training college where we can train young local people for our facilities and beyond.

“I hope our collaboration with the Bowraville Hub will result in homes for the elderly

putting my hand up to stand for Council, as it is now time for me to focus on my very supportive husband in return for the wonderful support he has given me.

“The Nambucca Valley consists of many wonderful people who support our community through their volunteering efforts.

“It has been a pleasure to be part of this, and if I can

“We were wondering how Terry would survive; he did and as we know absence makes the heart grow fonder.

“A vivid memory always is of Terry at the till, Lyn keeping everything tidy on the racks, Lyn would be so engrossed in her job at times she wouldn’t notice customers lined up.

“It was then out the back we’d hear Terry’s voice, ‘Lynie, Lynie’, we loved it.

“Most importantly it’s been wonderful to witness the special relationship you share with your Terry, such a special couple.

“We’ll miss you, we wish you both much happiness and look forward to your morningtea visits.

NAMBUCCA Valley councillor Janine Reed has been elected as Deputy Mayor in a close contest with councillor Martin Ballangarry OAM. The existing incumbent, councillor John Wilson did not seek re-election.

“I have been quite overwhelmed with the interest in being elected as Deputy Mayor, probably because it is only for a twomonth period.

“Despite this, I am looking forward to supporting the Mayor during what may be a very busy time,” Cr Reed told News Of The Area.

The Agriculture Visa will be a helping hand for Nambucca Valley farmers FARMERS and primary producers in the Nambucca Valley are a step closer to benefitting from the Federal Government’s new Australian Agriculture Worker Visa.

The Government amended the Migration Regulations on 30 September 2021 to create the Australian Agriculture Worker Visa (Ag Visa) and continue along the pathway of providing a functional visa that will help secure the future of rural and regional Australia.

This historic announcement that the Ag Visa is now law ensures the visa will help secure the long-term labour force that local farmers desperately need.

Pat Conaghan, Federal Member for Cowper, said the Agriculture Visa will also create a pathway to permanent residency for those workers who will help secure the future of our region.

“We promised this Visa and here it is.

“The creation of the Ag visa under the Migration Regulations is a landmark moment for the sector and delivers on our promise to have it in place this year,” Mr Cowper said.

“And it is not just those on the farm that benefit, the fisheries, forestry and agricultural processing sectors will also get access to workers under this visa.

“Worker restrictions have always been a problem, but it has been taken to the next level with COVID and the subsequent closure of international and internal borders.

“We now have a visa that will give the Mid North Coast a long term, reliable workforce for its crucial agricultural industries.”

The new regulation provides a new Australian Agriculture Worker stream which will provide for the entry and temporary stay of workers across all industries sectors.

Any workers will also need to meet the necessary Federal and State quarantine requirements.

A week of exits at Macquarie Street ON Friday 1 October, Gladys Berejiklian handed in her resignation as Premier of NSW and from parliament altogether.

While a shock to many, the signs were apparent, with Ms Berejiklian stepping away from her usual daily media conferences and the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) investigating her for alleged corruption, conflict of interest and her former relationship with MP Daryl Maguire.

It is alleged that Ms Berejiklian met with Mr Maguire about an upgrade to a road more than 100km from his Wagga Wagga electorate, which runs past two investment properties he hoped to use as short-term rental accommodation.

The Premier also allegedly failed to disclose a conflict of interest when planning the M9 Outer Sydney Orbital; a project from which Mr Maguire stood to obtain a financial benefit.

Incoming NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet, who served until Tuesday as the NSW Treasurer, said, “I would like to offer my gratitude and thanks to Gladys Berejiklian for the leadership and strength she has shown throughout her career and especially during one of the most challenging periods any leader could ever encounter.

“Gladys has worked tirelessly before and through the pandemic to protect the people of NSW from COVID-19 and to ensure our great State remains strong and resilient.

“The Premier has always placed the wellbeing and welfare of NSW first, showing an unstinting dedication to public service and a great love for her community.

“The interests of the people of NSW must always come first, and the priority for the Government is to ensure we continue to keep people safe, and that we re-open the economy and get people back to work, kids back to school, and life back to normal as fast as possible,” Mr Perrottet said.

Pfizer Vaccination Clinics

NAMBUCCA Healthcare Centre is offering Pfizer vaccination clinics from Wednesday 6 October for people in the Mandated, Frontline Worker and Essential Services priority groups.

The clinics will run in the afternoons from 2:00pm Monday to Thursday, from the popup clinic in the Nambucca Plaza carpark.

“From November we will be opening daily walk-in clinics, mornings as well as afternoons, to the general public,” said Nambucca Healthcare Centre General Manager Sheree Smith. q Cars lined up for drive through testing at the Plaza.

Following Friday’s announcement that Berejiklian would resign, Deputy Premier John Barilaro followed suit, announcing his resignation on Monday morning.

“As we emerge from lockdown, we must embrace this time as a new beginning for our State, and welcome the opportunity it presents for a refresh.

“I have decided now is the right time for me to hand the reins over to new leadership, and resign as Deputy Premier of NSW,” Mr Barilaro said.

“In my time as Deputy Premier I experienced first-hand, alongside the communities of NSW, the effects of prolonged drought, the worst bushfires in living memory, severe storm and flood disasters and a 1-in-100

year global pandemic, and it was a privilege to work with our communities to endure and recover from those challenges,” he said.

NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet said after the announcement that he was “deeply saddened at the loss of a close friend and formidable colleague in NSW Parliament”.

“John is one of the fiercest and most effective advocates for the people of regional NSW that our state has ever known,” said Mr Perrottet.

'MENTAL Health in an Unequal World' is the official theme for this year's Mental Health Day on Sunday 10 October, as set by the World Federation for Mental Health.

Feeling frustrated by minimal access to mental health resources, a Nambucca Valley resident called News Of The Area to share the online help she found at www.helpguide.org.

More support arrives for State’s farmers quarantine arrangements and has provided more support for its farmers than any other jurisdiction, whether it be through drought or the pandemic, but that doesn’t mean more can’t be done,” Mr Marshall said.

“This month, an additional 306 foreign agricultural workers from Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands will start work on farms across NSW, joining another 175 who arrived from Tonga just last month.

“They join the more than 2,000 who have arrived since the start of the pandemic, all of whose quarantine

has been subsidised by 50 percent, making our hotel arrangements far and away the cheapest in the country.

“I am constantly working with industry to look for the best ways to overcome evolving challenges.

New District Governor for Lions District

By Rachel MCGREGORALLEN ROBIN Parker is the new Lions District Governor for 201N1, a district that includes Lions clubs in the Nambucca Valley.

It is a busy role that Ms Parker is enjoying.

The new District Governor originally hails from Victoria, growing up in West Gippsland, 100km south-east of Melbourne.

Since leaving West Gippsland Ms Parker has “moved around a bit”.

“I was in Alice Springs, moved to Sydney and then up to Valla.

“I then moved to Alstonville NSW, where I am now.”

Ms Parker now brings her experience to the District Governor role whilst still belonging to the Maclean Lions Club.

The District Governor visits 65 Lions clubs across the district over the year.

“I have to cover a large area.

“The longest drive is from Alstonville to Collarenebri.”

Bill Shepherd, the current Nambucca Heads Lions Club Secretary, previously held the role of District Governor.

Mr Shepherd told News Of The Area, “Depending on your start point it is between 38 and 42000 km.”

And what is the purpose in travelling all this way to visit

clubs across the District?

“I visit all the clubs to see how they are operating and it is almost an accreditation to see that they are performing duties as a Lions club.

“Every club is different but we follow guidelines from America, Lions Club International (LCI).

“I aim to guide and assist them to carry out their functions,” Ms Parker said.

A candidate first begins as 2nd Vice DG for a year, then moves to 1st Vice DG for the second year, before finally taking on the role of DG. Ms Parker said, “The role is voted in by the district members, by delegates from each club.”

The DG role is for one year, and Mr Sheperd shared that, “You couldn’t do it for more than one year, it is a big commitment.

“It ends up being a four year job in total.”

“For the first 2.5 years you do extensive training.

“A lot of work is on the computer, a lot of work travelling,and going overseas.”

Travelling overseas for such an important role sounds like a bonus, however Covid-19 has put travel plans on hold for now.

There are 972 DG’s across the world for the Lions Club, and 19 of these are in Australia.

The theme Ms Parker has decided on for her time as District Governor is ‘Vibrant

splashes and vigorous growth, representing change’.

As an artist, Ms Parker depicted this in her painting ‘Vibrant Splashes, Vigorous Growth’.

The green in the work represents the growth, with the red splashes representing new ideas developed by the clubs.

“I want to help clubs to put new ideas into practise.

“To help them plant them and watch them grow.”

New public health advice for NSW reopening NEW public health advice sets out how NSW will continue to tackle COVID-19 as the state begins to reopen after hitting the 70 per cent double dose vaccination target this week.

Health Minister Brad Hazzard said while high vaccination rates were the key factor in the roadmap to recovery, COVID-19 will continue to circulate in the community.

“NSW is leading the nation in so many ways with its pandemic response but particularly in its vaccination efforts.

I urge those who are yet to get vaccinated to do so quickly to protect yourself, your loved ones and the community,” Mr Hazzard said.

“We are closing-in on the 70 per cent double dose mark and when we achieve it there will be significant changes to our public health advice and the key difference will be how that advice is applied to people who are vaccinated and to those who are not.

“Vaccination will provide greater freedoms as our society opens up and it reduces the risk of you spreading the virus to someone vulnerable, which

could cost them their life.

“Despite the ongoing challenges that will continue to be posed by COVID-19, we have the opportunity to lead the world which is why it is vital everyone is vaccinated and follows the updated public health advice that will be in place from 11 October.”

Some of the key public health advice for the general community will be: ● Everyone, vaccinated and not vaccinated, is urged to get tested if you have any symptoms of COVID-19 and immediately self-isolate until a negative result is received. ● Whether you are vaccinated or not vaccinated, if you test positive for COVID-19 you must selfisolate for 14 days. ● Close contacts in the community will include household members of positive cases and close social contacts of positive cases, such as partners and friends, who you spent time in close proximity with, even if fully vaccinated. Anyone may also be assessed as a being a close contact following a risk assessment, including at workplaces, high-risk settings, such as healthcare and aged care,

and other specific settings such as schools and child care centres, or where an outbreak has been identified. ● If you are a close contact of a positive case and vaccinated, you must get tested and self-isolate for seven days. On day six after exposure, you must get tested again. If a negative result is received and you are well, you can end isolation after day seven.

For the following seven days you must work from home where practicable, not attend hospitality settings, and not attend a high-risk settings even if it is your place of work. ● If you are a close contact of a positive case and not vaccinated you must get tested and immediately self-isolate for 14 days.

On day 12, you should get tested again. If a negative result is received, you can end isolation after day 14. ● The Service NSW QR code check-in system will remain in place in the general community. This system will be used to notify people who were in the same venue as a positive case. People will be asked to monitor for symptoms and get tested if

they become unwell. Other settings, including schools, workplaces and high-risk settings, such as healthcare and aged care, will have specific risk assessment approaches. ● People aged 16 years and over will only be allowed entry into some venues or settings if fully vaccinated, along with people with exemptions.

In some venues, children under 16 will have to be accompanied by a fully vaccinated member of their household to enter.

This includes hospitality venues, non-critical retail stores, personal services, sporting, recreation and entertainment facilities and events. Critical retail such as supermarkets and pharmacies will still be accessible to those not fully vaccinated. There are several options to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination or exemption.

Some of the key public health advice for the business community will be: ● If a staff member tests positive, whether they are vaccinated or not vaccinated, they must self-isolate for 14 days and follow the advice from NSW Health. Businesses will refer

to their COVID-19 Safety Plan and risk assessment approach for further instructions on notifying other staff. ● Businesses must inform NSW Health if three or more employees test positive for COVID-19 in a seven-day period. ● NSW Health guidelines will enable businesses to assess workplace risk if a COVID-19 case is identified and confirm actions to be taken. ● Businesses can reduce the risk of closure or staff going into isolation by implementing rigorous COVID-19 Safety Plans.

Other proactive steps businesses can take include ensuring staff are vaccinated and implementing regular onsite testing programs for workers.

With respect to vaccination compliance and obligations: ● Businesses will be responsible for taking reasonable measures to stop unvaccinated people entering premises. For example, having prominent signs stating requirements, Service NSW QR codes, staff checking vaccination status upon entry and only accepting valid forms of

evidence of vaccination. ● Authorised officers will monitor businesses re-opening, particularly those that have vaccination requirements, for example hospitality, retail, gyms, and personal services (e.g. hair, beauty). ● Penalties may apply for individuals and businesses who don’t comply.

On the spot fines of $1,000 may apply to individuals for not complying, or for using fraudulent evidence of vaccination or check-in. On the spot fines of $5,000 may apply to businesses for not complying with the Public Health Order vaccination requirements. Further penalties may apply for significant breaches.

NSW Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant said it is important to note that the new advice may be updated by NSW Health as case numbers and evidence changes.

“We will continue to do what we have done throughout this pandemic, which is to regularly update our advice, informed by experience, feedback, and emerging evidence. It is only in partnership that we can reopen in a safe way.”

‘A Passion for Printing’ exhibition launches at Matilda Street Gallery

By Tamara McWILLIAM THE Matilda Street Gallery has seen many amazing art exhibitions over the years and the current exhibition lives up to its magnificent reputation.

Opening on Saturday October 2, ‘A Passion for Printing’ is a stunning exhibition which showcases the fabulous artworks of three local artists; Jenny Thorby, Catherine Eadie and Juliet E Tilson.

The event was Covid-Safe, adhering to all of the current Covid-19 restrictions.

However masks and

social distancing didn’t put a dampener on Saturday's fabulous launch.

“The event was well spaced with an enthusiastic crowd,” artist Juliet E Tilson told News Of The Area.

The exhibition boasted numerous quality prints that are currently on sale to the public.

Much to the artists’ excitement, numerous prints were sold on the opening day, however, the exhibition in its entirety will be on show until mid-November.

SEPTEMBER was Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.

Born and bred local Kylie Saul joined thousands of people across Australia to participate in ‘The Long Run’, a 72km walk, run or wheel event that takes place throughout the month of September to raise much needed funds for those suffering from the silent killer, Prostate Cancer.

A total of 3888 men and women signed up for this years ‘The Long Run’.

Prostate Cancer is the most common cancer found in Australian men claiming the lives of nine men every single day.

CEO of the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, Professor Jeff Dunn AO stated, “The charity has been overwhelmed by the support for the long run campaign.

“We know that 49 men will

be diagnosed every day and sadly nine will die.

“We are asking all Australians to run, walk or wheel 72km throughout the month to symbolise our solidarity with men affected and to encourage more men to reach out for help when prostate cancer strikes.

“Men with prostate cancer face significantly higher rates of anxiety and depression, and a 70 percent increased risk of suicide death.”

Kylie’s aims in taking on this challenge were two-fold.

“I signed up for ‘The Long Run’ for men with prostate cancer not only to raise funds but much needed awareness.

“Men in their thirties are being diagnosed and it is too late.”

In an admirable effort, Kylie more than doubled her goal by running a massive 161 km during the month of September.

Perrottet elected Premier DOMINIC Perrottet defeated Planning Minister Rob Stokes 39 votes to five in a party room ballot on Tuesday morning to be elected leader of the NSW Liberals and become the new NSW Premier.

Mr Perrottet was sworn in at a ceremony at Government House on Tuesday, becoming NSW’s 46th premier and the youngest in the state’s history

at age 39.

Jobs Minister Stuart Ayres was elected unopposed as the deputy Liberal leader.

Following his appointment, Mr Perrottet said he understood the state’s trepidation and distress after the sudden exits of former Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Deputy Premier John Barilaro, as well as Minister for

Transport and Roads Andrew Constance in the past week.

“I want to start by acknowledging the events of the last few days have been difficult for a lot of people and I think we all understand why.

“Unexpected change can bring uncertainty and sometimes that can feel unsettling.

NEARLY half of all Australians over-50 experienced ageism in the past year, but only one in five of them took any action in response, according to new research launched to mark the first Ageism Awareness Day. Australia's campaign to end ageism, EveryAGE Counts, commissioned a nationwide poll by The RedBridge Group,

to help understand the gap between the widespread prevalence of ageism and our collective willingness to combat it. Research findings showed that 45 percent of Australians over 50 say they have experienced ageism in the past year, and 52 per cent of all Australians say they have witnessed ageism in the past year.

Worryingly, 82 percent of older Australians who experienced ageism say they did not take any action in response.

Of these 27 percent said it was because it was hard to prove, 24 percent said it was because they didn't know how to respond, 22 percent said was because they were not sure if it was really ageism

“But as hard as it may be, we all have a duty to keep going.

“Today begins a new chapter in the story of NSW. “One that we will all write together,” said Mr Perrottet.

Paying tribute to his predecessor, Mr Perrottet said Ms Berejiklian’s “strong and steady leadership has seen us through so many challenges”.

"It's something I believe we really need to start taking more seriously in Australia.

“So much ageism happens unconsciously, and it's allowed to keep happening because we don't feel sufficiently informed or empowered to push back. Ageism Awareness Day is about ending that and I couldn't be prouder to play this role."

EveryAGE Counts co-chair and former federal Minister Robert Tickner said Ageism Awareness Day was an important initiative and it was very pleasing to see so many individuals and organisations around the country having conversations about ageism and its impacts.

"The proportion of the Australian population over 65 has doubled from 8 percent to 15 percent over the past 50 years. “We can’t keep discriminating against a fifth of our population.

“We need to update our attitudes, structures, and practices.

"Of course, the responsibility to act lies not just with those who experience ageism, but with everyone else. “Discrimination and prejudice survive when we turn a blind eye or allow it to go unchallenged."

Regional schools welcome back students MORE than 140,000 students across NSW returned to face-to-face learning on Tuesday, 5 October 2021 for the start of Term 4.

With COVID-19 restrictions eased across many parts of rural and regional NSW, 721 schools – almost a third of the State’s public schools – welcomed all students back on site.

Students are returning

to COVID-safe settings that include QR code checkins, no visitors, restricted activities, increased hygiene practices and mask wearing.

Minister for Education and Early Childhood Learning Sarah Mitchell said she understands how important it is to have children back in classrooms.

“Thousands of excited students are returning to the classroom in the regions

today, and will soon be followed by students in other parts of the state with either a staged return from 18 October, or via the easing of local restrictions,” Ms Mitchell said.

“After a disrupted Term 3, it is more important than ever that students receive the academic, social and wellbeing benefits of being in the classroom.

“Despite this excitement, it is important that parents and students follow their school’s guidelines for safe

Tony Rothacker, the Emerald Beach founder of Youngster.co, has turned these challenges into an opportunity.

He is on a quest to connect the generations and use technology for good in the Nambucca Valley.

Tick season

AS the weather warms up, it’s essential to ensure that your furry friends are protected against ticks.

Tick Paralysis is a severe and potentially fatal condition that requires immediate veterinary action, however, it is one of the most preventable diseases in dogs and cats.

Known scientifically

as Ixodes holocyclus, the paralysis tick causes ascending flaccid paralysis in dogs and cats, leading to an inability to walk, inability to swallow and protect the airways, eventual respiratory paralysis and then death.

Paralysis ticks can also have a direct effect on the heart, causing heart failure and without treatment, susceptible dogs will die.

Dr Margie Roser is a senior emergency and critical care vet who strongly emphasises the importance of being tick-cautious.

“Ticks are particularly potent in spring and early summer when the female ticks are most active and can travel in mulch, on clothing and in cars from the coast to inland regions.

“They can then go on to infect dogs, so just because your dog didn’t go to the coast doesn't mean it can’t get a paralysis tick,” Dr Roser said.

Symptoms include lethargy, lack of power in the back legs and inability to jump, vomiting and/or a strange cough.

“Although the tick may already have dropped off, you should have a thorough look, with 90 percent of ticks

McKay Brothers release debut CD

THE McKay Brothers launched their debut Australian country music album ‘That Brother Of Mine' at Macksville Ex Services Club on Sunday 3 October over the long weekend, after COVID locked down their first attempt on Father’s Day. The local pair of Lach, 59, and Geoff, 68, performed some favourites from their new CD at the launch gig.

“Around 130 guests enjoyed an afternoon of songs both from the album as well as lots of old favourites, together with lots of laughs, which at this time is probably what everyone needed,” Lach told News Of The Area.

“It’s been rather crazy in the past four weeks since receiving the CD; we’ve already sold 250 before the official launch on Sunday.

“We’re pretty happy with that.”

The Brothers have been performing Facebook Live shows and with a mention on there about their debut CD, sales have been made locally, as well as in NSW, QLD, SA, WA, NZ and Tasmania.

“We sent the MP3 version to our main supporter in the UK, too.

“Alan Cole, a radio station owner in the UK, from Don Valley Country Radio in Doncaster has supported us since hearing one of our songs a year or so ago.

“He’s got a breakfast show with an hour’s segment playing Australian country music…that’s been great for us.”

Reading the stats on copyrighting a song, some 63,000 songs per week are copyrighted, Lach said, which means that “chances of getting your song played on national radio are pretty slim”.

“We’re working with

community radio stations, such as 2NVR in Nambucca and 2AirFM in Coffs.”

On launch night, The Macksville Ex Services Club and The McKay Brothers provided giveaways including club vouchers, tankards, glasses, bottles of wine, and a few chocolates.

The boys paid tribute for the album to their Mum, Dad and sister Barb and spoke highly of their many friends

who have supported them over the years.

Special mention goes to Rob Breese, from Beaten Track Records, who produced the CD in Tamworth, and joined the brothers on Sunday.

New rules for bowfishers CARP fish will now be in the sights of the state’s bowfishers, with new rules and regulations for the sport announced by Minister for Agriculture Adam Marshall on Saturday.

Mr Marshall said the changes would allow bowfishers to safely fish with specialised equipment in specific inland NSW waters while also helping control pest populations, and come following extensive industry and community consultation.

“Carp are considered a noxious pest and remain the only species that may be taken using bowfishing equipment,” Mr Marshall said.

“This is a popular activity, and bowfishers will now be allowed to target carp using an upright bow with a specialised arrow attached

through a tethered line and a reel.

“The fishing community asked the NSW Government to have a serious discussion about allowing bowfishing of carp, and I’m pleased to deliver this welcomed news today after the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) conducted public consultation.”

Mr Marshall said a successful trial of bowfishing for carp had previously shown it could be safe, effective, and provide economic benefits for rural and regional areas of NSW. “The Trial Program in 2016 and 2017 and its subsequent review identified that, with the right regulation, bowfishing is a safe and sustainable technique,” Mr Marshall said.

“This is in addition to the huge environmental benefits that come from removing pest carp from inland waters.

“It is important bowfishers understand the rules, regulations and technique surrounding the sport before taking up bowfishing.”

To assist with education and awareness of rules and regulations, a NSW Recreational Bowfishing for Carp in Inland Waters Guide is available via the NSW DPI website at www.dpi.nsw.gov. au/hunting/game-and-pests/ bowfishing-for-carp.

Bowfishing is now prohibited in tidal waters, entrances to rivers and lakes, coastal lagoons, all offshore waters and estuaries and all beaches across the state.

BOATERS across the Nambucca Valley are being urged to check their vessels and safety equipment before heading out on the water this month, because many have been sitting idle during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Minister for Transport and Roads Andrew Constance said the October long weekend was the official launch of the Boating Season, with Transport for NSW expecting this to be our biggest season ever.

“Whether you’re fishing, kayaking, paddle boarding or water skiing this long weekend, please make sure you follow the rules to ensure a day out on the water doesn’t end in tragedy,” Mr Constance said.

“We’ve seen an increase in the number of people applying for new boating licenses over the last year, so

if you’re thinking of buying a second hand boat be sure to check it over properly.

“Lifejackets are the most important safety equipment on any recreational vessel.

“In NSW you must service inflatable lifejackets once a year or in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

Remember to check them every time before you get on the water.”

There were 17 boating related fatalities on NSW waterways in the year to 30 June 2021.

131 lives have been lost during recreational boating incidents over the 10 years to June 2020.

Tragically, 79 of those lives might have been saved had all people presumed drowned been wearing a life jacket.

Cheap will costs thousands JOE is married to Jenny and has two children from a previous marriage.

Joe buys a will kit from the local Post Office for $20.

Being a man of few words, Joe simply writes “I give my children enough money for a deposit on a house and everything else to my wife Jenny”.

He then signs his will and Jenny witnesses his signature.

Jenny asks him if he would like her solicitor to take a look at his will to make sure that it is all okay.

Joe tells her that it would just be a waste of money.

Years later, Joe passes-away.

He has some cash in the bank and owns a property with Jenny as tenants in common.

His estate is worth $500,000.

Jenny’s solicitor advises her that she is going to need a Grant of Probate to administer Joe’s estate but because the will was witnessed by her, a named beneficiary, her entitlement is void unless the Court is satisfied that Joe ‘knew and approved’ the contents of the will and that it was made ‘freely and voluntarily’.

Jenny is further advised that because the execution of the will was not witnessed by two ‘not interested’ witnesses, the Court will require evidence of the circumstances surrounding the execution of the will and of Joe’s intentions.

This is a problem because there are no corroborating witnesses.

To complicate matters, Joe’s children are advised that their entitlement under the will is not ‘sufficiently certain’, so they commence a Family Provision Application to protect their rights.

Had Joe listened to Jenny and sought advice regarding his will, his loved ones would have saved thousands of dollars in legal fees and avoided the delays and stress in what could have been a straightforward administration.

WELCOME all to our monthly column.

Emergency management agencies such as Red Cross, SES, RFS and Local Emergency Management Officers at Council are continually assisting communities to improve their resilience and preparedness for emergency and disaster events.

Some communities are now feeling more committed to supporting their community at a local level to address issues or concerns that are unique to their specific area.

In doing so, some communities have established their own Community-led Resilience Team (CRT).

The CRT is led by residents, for residents, with the focus on providing emergency preparedness information.

CRT STRUCTURE Overall coordination generally consists of a Team Leader, a Deputy Team Leader, Street/ Suburb/Area coordinators and resident members.

The network represents a ‘communication tree’ that distributes information to members relevant to their particular situation.

CRT BENEFITS Brings a community together before, during, and after an emergency or disaster event Community members work together and establish reliable links with relevant authorities

Raises awareness of emergency/ disaster events and how to respond safely Supports vulnerable people within the community LOCAL CRT Red Cross is proud to share with readers the development and formation of Valla Beach CRT. A small steering group met earlier in the year to discuss the feasibility of forming their own CRT. Since its inception Red Cross has been active in supporting and guiding the formation of this team and under the leadership of Valla Beach local Pat Greenwood, membership now exceeds 20 members.

Recently each Street Coordinator has been busy delivering to residents a magnetic fridge flyer that outlines the purpose of the CRT and relevant contact details that will be valuable to Valla Beach residents in the case of an emergency.

Congratulations to all the team for their devotion and commitment.

Mr Geoff W. Dear Geoff, I love the street library concept.

It offers all the best parts of borrowing a book (flicking through titles, locating a classic, the anticipation of lazy Sunday afternoons draped on a chaise with a cat, a cup of tea, and some dog-eared pages ... and all of it without the cost of a new book, the fines of a library and the philanthropic joy of giving and receiving during a stroll in your neighbourhood.

Now, to your question.

For a start, literary merit doesn't always equate to a best seller.

Take this line for example: 'His voice is warm and husky like dark melted chocolate fudge caramel... or something." Dark melted chocolate fudge caramel?

Or something? If a 10-year-old wrote this in their written expression book, they'd be pulled up for starting the sentence in a verbose manner and finishing it by being lazy or unimaginative, and yet this book topped best-seller lists with its combination of cringey writing and a stalking, manipulative protagonist.

I understand where you're coming from, though.

Is it okay, for example, to swap a pristine copy of Wuthering Heights for a muddy version of Bombproof Your Horse, admittedly an interesting read, but with a very limited prospective audience, or Knitting With Dog Hair: Better a sweater from a dog you know and love than from a sheep you'll never meet (both real titles, by the way).

I feel that in the same vein as 'an eye for an eye', you really should swap a decent book for a decent book, particularly when this free community service has a significant feel-good factor about it.

As this British drama has developed over five seasons, its charisma and heart have stuck around, even as much-loved actors have departed. Tonight, in the second episode of the fresh instalment, Will (Brittney) and Geordie (Green) negotiate a complex family dispute involving a local adoption agency.

Laced with a big whack of cynicism, a generous slice of wit, and a swathe of experts, it’s no wonder Gruen – the only show in Australia that dissects ads and marketing – is returning tonight for its 13th season. Whether you are an ad junkie, work in marketing, have a soft spot for host Wil Anderson, or simply enjoy watching experts discuss and reveal the secrets behind their craft, it’s a reliably entertaining and educational 30 minutes. The tone can be serious, but most of the time the panellists are keen to entertain the audience.

Animal lovers will get an abundance of dogs, along with close-ups of their reactions, to swoon over as families and folks arrive at the Animal Welfare League, in NSW, to be matched with a canine friend. Dr Chris Brown, who had viewers giddy thanks to his charm and handsomeness on Bondi Vet, chronicles the journeys of the animals and would-be companions as the series’ narrator, ensuring the attention is on the fourlegged friends and not on his charming smile.

In tonight’s premiere, we meet a gentle giant.
