The Bowling Club's Men’s President, Mr Ray Hunt, said, “After being delayed by two years because of COVID, the 44th Annual Ken Howard Men’s Competition will be played over the June long weekend 11, 12, 13 June, this year with bowlers coming from Sydney, the Gold Coast and many other locations.”

FEDERAL Member for Cowper Pat Conaghan announced on Monday that five councils in the Cowper electorate will benefit from the Australian Government’s $2.1 billion pre-payment on next year’s Financial Assistance Grant to all councils across Australia.

Mr Conaghan said this early payment will give every council in Cowper access to funds to help manage the cumulative impacts of the floods and COVID-19.

Gumbaynggirr Language Revival

By Rachel MCGREGOR-ALLEN ON Thursday 24 March, education professionals who are committed to the delivery of Gumbaynggirr language in schools attended a workshop in Nambucca Heads to learn more about the Gumbaynggirr Language and Culture program.

Day Two of the program saw attendees visiting Valla Beach for an ‘on Country’ experience.

The Gumbaynggirr Aboriginal Language and Culture Nest was first launched in February 2014 and covers Coffs Harbour, South Grafton, Macksville, Orara, Nambucca Valley, Sawtell, Toormina, the Northern Beaches, Dorrigo, Urunga and Bellingen.

Micklo Jarrett, Aboriginal and Culture Language Officer/Senior Education Officer, told News Of The Area, “The funding for the Language and Culture Nests was set out to bring future job possibilities to the future generations of Gumbaynggirr people.

“To help them to continue to teach their own language and culture.”

The importance of this program was emphasised when Glenn Cook, Language and Culture Advisor for the five Language and Culture Nests in NSW, spoke about how he was not able to speak his language when he was a child because it was banned.

Mr Cook said he was now working hard to spread his knowledge and language across the state in his capacity as Language and Culture Advisor.

Connie Ah See, Manager for the NSW AECG Aboriginal Language and Culture Nests, who works closely with Mr Cook, said the aim is to make language programs full-time in schools.

The best way to implement the program at schools was a key discussion point, including how to attract more potential First Nation educators to the Gumbaynggirr language training classes being held in the community.

Micklo Jarrett said there are four community language courses currently being run for Gumbaynggirr and First Nations mob that live in the area.

Micklo said, “These classes are designed to give Gumbaynggirr community members the opportunity to learn their language and to think about stepping into the position to be future Language and Culture Nest educators that go into schools.”

Trained Gumbaynggirr Language and

Culture Educators are funded by the NSW Department of Education to provide three hours of language teaching to each school.

Mr Jarrett said the Muurrbay Aboriginal Language and Culture Cooperative are developing a Gumbaynggirr language resource for K-12 with lesson plans for each week.

This resource is designed for educators and teachers alike.

Throughout NSW there are five different Language and Culture Nests, each invested in teaching the Aboriginal language that belongs to that area.

These are Bundjalung Nest, Gamilaraay Nest, Gumbaynggirr Nest, North West Wiradjuri Nest, and the Paakantji Baakintiji Nest.

The initiative is a partnership between the NSW Department of Education, NSW Aboriginal Education Consultative Group Inc. (NSW AECG Inc.), local Reference Groups and Aboriginal Language and community groups. q Workshop members addressed by Micklo Jarrett.

COVID-19 Recovery Funding on offer COMMUNITY wellbeing-focused events and initiatives will be eligible for a share of $5 million in grants, as part of the NSW Government’s $130 million COVID-19 mental health recovery package.

The COVID-19 Community Connection and Wellbeing Program will support projects that promote social connection, resilience and wellbeing in a sustainable, embedded way.

Minister for Mental Health Bronnie Taylor said COVID-19 has caused serious health implications, as well as significant social and economic disruption for individuals and communities.

“In addition to the health impacts, COVID has changed how we live and work, cancelled events and activities and prevented us from spending quality time with our family, friends and communities,” Mrs Taylor said.

“Research conducted by the NSW Mental Health Commission found at least four out of ten NSW residents have experienced negative impacts on their way of life, finance, work or study, overall health, and mental health. There is a clear need for a social wellbeing program.

“This important $5 million investment will kickstart community wellbeing events and initiatives across NSW, to rebuild social connection and cohesion.”

Minister for Emergency Services and Resilience and Minister for Flood Recovery Steph Cooke said the program will support greater social connectedness and build the capacity of individuals and communities to maintain wellbeing in the future.

“Disasters have a social as well as a physical impact on members of our communities, and recovery involves more than just rebuilding,” Ms Cooke said.

“It’s critical that we support the recovery process for our communities by making them more connected and resilient to the future challenges we will inevitably face.”

ON 28 March 2022 Police arrested a 31-year-old man at a Macksville address who was wanted on two outstanding warrants and who had been committing further offences whilst avoiding apprehension.

During the incident the accused man became violent towards Police and resisted arrest. The accused man was charged at Macksville Police Station and was refused bail to appear before Kempsey Local Court on 29 March 2022.

This is the first Easter Parade the school has organised since Covid-19 put a stop to group gatherings, and people being welcomed into the school.

“The Easter Parade has always been an annual event for the school, and I’m very proud of the students and staff of our school,” said David Taylor, Bowraville Central School’s Executive Principal.

After the parade children returned to the school with parents and staff for

afternoon dancing and Easter activities, and the traditional ‘Egg Drop’ competition, the first since Covid-19 hit.

The ‘Egg Drop’ competition is where students make egg contraptions that will cushion eggs when dropped, and great fun was had by all present.

Anzac Day commemorations to include three days of two-up VETERANS across NSW will be honoured through traditional Anzac Day commemorative services as 2022 heralds the return of full-scale dawn services and marches, while two-up will be played over three days

during the Anzac Day long weekend, and veterans, their families and friends will travel on any mode of public transport for free.

Commemorations across NSW will return to normal on 25 April for the first time in three

years, while two-up will be allowed to be played at clubs and pubs across all three days of the Anzac Day long weekend for the first time.

Minister for Hospitality Kevin Anderson said this one-

off special measure will allow patrons to play two-up not only on Anzac Day but on the two days before – Saturday 23 April and Sunday 24 April.

“This is a great way for people to come together to enjoy the Anzac spirit while paying respect to veterans past and present while also giving pubs and clubs a leg up as they continue to

recover from a challenging few years,” Mr Anderson said.

“Pubs and Clubs play an important role on Anzac Day, providing a place for war veterans to gather, reminisce and share the Anzac spirit with their mates and families, this will give an added incentive for people to head to their local,” he said.

RSL NSW President Ray James welcomed the Government’s announcement.

“Anzac Day is a time for the NSW community to come together and pay tribute to all members and veterans of the Australian Defence Force who have followed in the Anzac’s footsteps – soldiers, sailors and air force personnel - for their service and sacrifice,” Mr James said.

“As the custodians of the ANZAC spirit, RSL NSW and the veteran volunteers in its Sub-Branches work tirelessly to ensure people honour the service and sacrifice of the men and women who have served their country in all conflicts,” he said.

Imagination Library Launches

By Rachel MCGREGOR-ALLEN NAMBUCCA Valley Libraries have launched an Imagination Library, an initiative which delivers free, quality books to children in the first five years of their life.

Babies born from 1 January 2022 are eligible to be enrolled in the program.

Parents will be provided with a registration form in hospital following the birth of their child.

They can also register their child online, or go to one of the Nambucca Valley

Library branches to register.

The NSW Government has partnered with United Way Australia, a not-forprofit community impact organisation, to expand the Imagination Library in NSW. The Imagination Library was initiated by Dolly Parton more than 20 years ago, and according to United Way Australia, more than 160 million books have been delivered to children in the USA, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia.

The aim of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is for all children to have access to their own library from an

early age, which will assist them in developing the essential emerging literacy skills they will rely on when learning to read and write.

Sue Hughes, Library Officer, Nambucca Valley Council Libraries, told News Of The Area that she thinks the Imagination Library is a wonderful concept.

“Children who love to read will find their school life much easier because they will be good readers.

“There is so much reading at school.

“It is all about the joy of reading, you cannot read a child too early,” said Ms

Hughes.

Enrolment in the program takes place in the first few weeks of a baby's life, and they continue to receive a book on a monthly basis until they turn five.

This means that they will have received up to 60 books by the time that they complete the program.

The Imagination Library program is set up so that the child will receive the first book approximately eight weeks after they have enrolled, and then monthly from then on.

Delivered to the child’s home by Australia Post, they

can anticipate the arrival of their book at approximately the same time each month.

The package will be addressed in the child’s name, with the aim to create excitement for the child as the gift of a book to read and share with their family arrives.

Additional assistance is provided to families with an information sheet included inside each book which has been written by early childhood educators.

These sheets contain tips on how to engage with the book; for example providing before reading,

while reading and after reading activities.

The initial program is funded by the NSW Government, and there are options for local sponsorship to support the growth and sustainability of the program.

Ms Hughes encourages all parents to join their child up to the library as soon as they can to help develop good reading habits for life.

Nambucca artists to perform at HÆRFEST

ORIGINAL local and regional musicians are bringing their festival beats to HÆRFEST in Bellingen on Friday 8 April at 5pm.

Nambucca artists are set to feature, with Samba Soul and Drumfire led by Kaya Boom including musicians and performance students from the Nambucca Valley.

Resilience workshops at Urunga Sail Training Club IS resilience an overused word?

It certainly describes the sheer magnitude of what the communities of the Mid North Coast have had to find from the ravages of bushfires, Covid and now floods.

A lot of this is still unfinished business and still raw as people work towards getting some order back into their lives.

Over April and May the Urunga Sail Training Club (USTC) are holding workshops promoting social connection, mental wellbeing and resilience through a grant received from Healthy North Coast, for communities affected by the bushfires of 2019/2020 in the Bellingen, q A ‘Raftmaking’ workshop is on offer for the kids.

These workshops are designed to be all weather events at Urunga, are free and all materials will be supplied.

“Over the holidays for the kids (6 to 16 years) they have a ‘Raft-making’ workshop over the coming holidays on 12, 14 and 19 April, where they can design and make a raft from natural materials and test its sailing ability,” said USTC Secretary Kerry Ridgley “For Indigenous women we have a ‘Traditional Indigenous Basketry’ workshop by local Gumbaynggirr Ngamba elder Hannah Smith on 9 May using naturally sourced materials.

“And there will be two other workshops for women to make ‘Rope Coiled Memory Baskets’ from recycled fabrics on 12 and 19 May. “During the day they will make a small basket and participants can bring a memento or object, photo or piece of their own fabric that was left from the aftermath of the fires, or has special meaning and weave this into their baskets.”

For the men the USTC are holding ‘Nautical Mat Making’ workshops on 29 April, 13 and 27 May. These workshops are to bring those affected from the aftermath of the fires to come together, share, reflect and produce something to be proud of for everyday use or just for decoration and they can also bring a memento or object, photo, piece of fabric to plait into this mat.

Nambucca Heads Island Golf Club report

THIS should be called ‘The No Golf Report’.

The rain event during the week, culminating in major course flooding on Thursday meant that there was no golf played on the Island during the week.

Very fortunately, the Club infrastructure, Pro Shop, Golf Cart Shed and Greens Shed all have remained above the flood level and are undamaged. q

However, most of the golf course was under water.

The good news is that the damage to the course does not appear to be as bad as last year.

Despite occasional tidal surges over the causeway, members responded to the call out for a working bee on Saturday morning to rake and remove debris, repair damaged cart paths, repair gardens and whipper snip in accessible areas, making a huge contribution assisting our staff in the daunting task

of rehabilitating the course.

It is likely that there will be more work ahead.

Thank you to those that were able to make it.

All golf has been cancelled at this stage up to and including Tuesday 5 April.

A decision will be made on Monday 4 April in relation to play on Wednesday and thereafter.

It was great to see a good crowd turning out for our Friday night reopening at short notice – the Restaurant was busy, the beer was cold, the raffles well supported, and the

Member’s Draw (postponed from Wednesday) winner was Lyn Grose.

At time of writing, we hope to have the Golf Course open for competition from Wednesday - walkers only, as the ground remains too soft to handle the weight of motorised golf carts and scooters.

LAST week saw a much needed break in the weather and with the first round of the Triples scheduled for Sunday quite a few bowlers hit the green on Saturday to blow the cobwebs away.

Many thanks to Golf Club President Gary Clark for giving the green a cut and to Bowls President Nobby for rolling the green as well, it came up a treat.

By Grumpy’s CORNER IN the past week or so, despite the weather's best attempts to disrupt bowls at our club, we have been somewhat fortunate to get some quality time on the greens.

The inaugural Marquis Macadamia Pairs event was run and won by Warren Gallop and Bev Cloake.

A good field was on

hand in what was a fun day and for what is sure to be an ongoing success.

We can still use more teams for our last Monday of the month event so if you’re interested in fielding a team contact the club for details.

The quarter finals of our Major Singles were played with Paul Michel edging Doug Cedelland, Paul Ward defeating Jo Francks, Ken Rostron overcoming Aaron Cedelland and Graham ‘the better bowler’ Hunt

defeating Terry Harvey.

The semi-finals are set for Saturday at 1pm so come on down to watch some quality bowling.

This past Sunday had the club officially open our two new greens with over 80 bowlers and non-

bowlers alike, enjoying the good weather in friendly competition and a BBQ lunch to boot.

Our normal weekly program commences with club selected Triples on Wednesday, Ladies social bowls on Thursday from 8.30am, Friday is Men’s Triples from 1.00pm and finishing off the week with Sunday morning social bowls.

Our Easter Saturday Triples event is still accepting nominations so get a team in while you can as it will be closing soon.

Cricket season review

ANOTHER Coffs Harbour cricket season is in the books.

And it was a season which will go down in history as one of the least played due to the constant wet weather.

Here is how each club fared in the various

competitions of the 2021/22 season.

Macksville Ex-Services: Had a strong season in the juniors as under 16s premiers and under 14s grand finalists.

Valleys Cricket: Fell agonizingly short of making the Premier League grand final, almost beating Sawtell in the preliminary final.

Took home some silverware for the season as second grade premiers.

Bellingen/Dorrigo: Won the under 14s title and were runners up in the second grade competition.

Were also semifinalists in the under 16s, under 12s and third grade competitions.

Northern Districts

Rebels: Were awarded premiers of the North Coast Cricket Council’s Premier League season after finishing on top of the ladder and the washout of the scheduled grand final.

Sawtell Cricket Club: Another premiership winning season for the powerhouse club taking out the third grade and under 12s premierships.

Were also grand finalists in the North Coast Cricket

Nambucca Heads Women’s Bowling Club

Council’s Premier League and T20 competitions.

Nana Glen: Were the standout side in the Coffs Harbour District Cricket Association’s first grade competition, finishing as undefeated premiers.

The Lizards also finished runners up in the third grade and under 12s competitions, and topped the first grade’s T20 Cup. Diggers Cricket Inc.: Finished first grade runners-

up as they gave their premiership defense a good shot.

Were also semi-finalists in the second and third grade competitions.

Coffs Colts: Had a tough first season in their step up to the Premier League.

The Colts under 16s finished runners up in their junior competition, while the Colts seniors were ladder leaders in the second grade T20 Cup.

By Nerida BLACKFORD ON Tuesday 5 April a good crowd enjoyed the sunshine and some terrific bowls in the final of the Consistency Championship.

Manor Smith put on a master class, and earned yet another title to add to her impressive list.

A win of 150-100 over Kim Porter was early with some impressive bowling.

Congratulations to Manor and Kim on making it to the final.

North Coast Force announces representative teams

THE North Coast’s best junior Australian Rules players have been selected to represent their region in their representative squads.

The North Coast Force’s representative teams have been named in the under 13s, under 15s, under 17s, and Youth Girls 17 age groups.

These teams will compete in the Hunter Challenge Cup on the June long weekend, and in the Northern NSW Championships in Coffs Harbour from 11-13 July.

Record numbers participating in the selection process sees the North Coast Force in the enviable position

of announcing some of the strongest teams in recent history.

Community Football Manager Paul Taylor said that the response has been overwhelming considering the significant problems posed by recent rainfall.

"The combination of the partnership with the Sydney Swans Academy and the heavily disrupted representative seasons over the past two years appears to have made players keener than ever to be involved in the North Coast Force program," he said.

"Our Force program had built some great momentum prior to the disruptions

caused by the pandemic and, with the talented players that we've selected, we've got the chance to pick right up where we left off.

"Half of our program is about how we perform at the carnivals, but the other half is helping individuals to develop as players and hopefully seeing a number of them progress through the Sydney Swans Academy pathway."

In another great sign for the popularity of representative footy, the North Coast Force will field its first ever Youth Girls 13 team at the Northern NSW Championships in Coffs Harbour.

Taylor was overwhelmed

with the response to girls trialling for representative selection.

"We were overwhelmed with the number of girls who

trialled for the Under 13 team, despite the fact that our new club competition for Under 14 girls hasn't started yet,” he said.

“We've offered nine girls the chance to form a trainon squad that will become the base for our Youth Girls

13 rep team and will hold another trial specifically to round out this team once the local club competition is underway and girls who are new to the sport have had a chance to realise that they want to be involved in rep footy."

“This year I had the fourth fastest seed time going into the 1500m and the fastest seed time for the 800m nationally.

“My coach is Andrew Rowlings and he had confidence in me taking out my first national title.

“He's included a lot more speed work into my training plan and he has helped to make the final 200m in a race my strength.”

“I set a comfortable pace which I kept going for the first 1100m.

“On the bell lap (400m to go) the pace picked up and two interstate athletes passed me with 300m to go.

“As we entered the home straight, I increased the leg speed and got back into first place finishing in 4 min 2 seconds, a five second Personal Best for me.”

The 800m had three heats to make the final the following day.

“In my heat I ran a fast time (2 min 1 second) but didn't feel great and finished in fourth, but it was fast enough to qualify for the final.

“In the final the first lap was very controlled, and I

hugged the inside lane.”

The eight finalists were all running together as they began the second lap.

“As we entered the last 400m the speed increased and I found myself in a lead group of three athletes, entering the last turn I took the lead and was able to maintain and extend it to take the win in 1 min 57 seconds.”

After the championships Daniel says he feels very relieved and a great sense of accomplishment.

“I knew that I was capable of taking out the two titles but it's still pretty surreal that I actually did it.

“Next for me is a bit of a break and being able to play some team sports which I put on hold going into the national championships.

“The cross country season is starting now and I'm looking forward to hopefully making the NSW team to compete at nationals in Adelaide in August.

“I enjoy Parkrun on Saturday mornings in Urunga and am running in the Mid North Coast Cross Country Series races which started last weekend.

“My running goal is one day to represent Australia in an 800m event such as World Junior championships or the Commonwealth Games.”

Daniel attends Bishop Druitt College in Coffs Harbour and is in year 9.

They will rot.

But that's ok because we can grow a number of other starchy plants who love these sodden conditions.

All of them are beginner-

Taro and cocoyam taste like creamy, nutty potato, while lotus and water chestnut retain a crispy to chewy texture.

Taro/cocoyam/dasheen/ eddo Colocasia esculenta Taro has looked after humanity for a long time.

Rich in nutrients and energy and gentle to digest, it is

Lotus is a beautiful and zero effort perennial starchy food plant who grows in ponds.

That means our big rains are not a problem!

It has very few pests or diseases.

Every part of the plant is edible, raw or cooked.

Put a lotus root in a pond (or better yet, a bathtub) in full sun with a small amount of water and a large amount of silt and well rotted manure.

That's about all the care it needs.

I’M still scratching my head and trying to make sense of Richie Tassicker’s letter (‘Beware the Independents’, p16, News Of The Area, 1 April 2022 Edition).

There is, of course, an argument to be made about

the ‘Big Australia’ policy to which the major parties are so attached.

A policy which, through annual growth in GDP, driven by population increase, creates the illusion that we are all becoming wealthier and happier.

We can also argue that,

as a nation, we are hugely and expensively over governed.

However, to then make the leap, as Richie does, to assert that the ‘so-called’ Independents are somehow party-aligned if they don’t concur with his views, is a big stretch.

I would recommend to him that he have a look at the website and the policy

statement of our local, truly independent candidate, Caz Heise.

He will discover a candidate who has genuinely committed herself to serving the needs and the aspirations of the people of Cowper.

I have no idea what her views are about ‘Big Australia’ or the future of state governments.

Six month relationship leads to claim AFTER a ten year relationship, Robert separates from his wife and moves into rental accommodation.

Two years later, Robert allows Mary to stay in the residence rent-free.

Six months pass and Robert tragically passes away at the age of 50.

Robert had made a Will, appointing his wife as his executor and nominating his two children, aged five and ten as the primary beneficiaries of the estate.

Robert’s estate consists of real estate and superannuation, totalling $2 million.

Mary is not named in the Will and after obtaining legal advice, makes a family provision claim on Robert’s estate.

The claim proceeds to a hearing in Supreme Court.

Robert’s executor opposes Mary’s claim, submitting to the Court that Mary does not have standing to make a claim because she was not in a de facto relationship with Robert and that she was not dependent upon him at his date of death.

The Court hears evidence, based on police records, that Robert had alleged that Mary had taken a computer and cash from him and that he “did not want to see her again or have any contact with her”.

Text messages are also examined, revealing that their relationship was “volatile” and that the nature of their relationship was “uncertain”.

Robert’s executor is relieved when the Court rules that Robert and Mary were not in a de facto relationship at the date of death.

However, the Court proceeds to find that Mary was a “member of Robert’s household” and was dependent upon Robert for accommodation for which no rent was paid.

The Court also finds that Mary was partly emotionally dependent upon Robert on the basis that he was able to “calm her down” during periods of emotional distress.

On the basis of a finding that Mary was partly dependent upon Robert for a period of just six months, the Court awards Mary a “modest” sum of $60,000 plus the payment of her legal costs.

The modern role of churches DEAR News Of The Area,

I REFER to the article by Mick Birtles (‘The role of local Churches on display at Mary Boulton Cottage’, p5, 25 March Edition, Nambucca Valley NOTA) about the role of churches in the establishment and development of towns in the 1800’s, as briefly, but well explained in paragraph two of this article.

As a congregation member of St John the Baptist Anglican Church in Nambucca, I would like to see the interesting historical display and information, to be exhibited at the Mary Boulton Pioneer Cottage, complemented by follow-up current information about the ongoing role of our church, and those of other denominations in our local community.

The primary role of Christian churches world-wide is to bring the gospel of Jesus Christ, and his promise of salvation for all who believe in him, to as many people as possible, and remains just as it was back in the 1800’s and will remain so until he comes again in judgement.

We are living through a period of great uncertainty and insecurity, even the threat of destruction, in many parts of our world.

The pace of change in lifestyles and socalled progress has become so stressful and all-consuming for many that faith and/or

understanding of religion, and the benefits this offers, is being neglected or has been disregarded by some altogether.

This is tragic, and although faith may not always appear to change challenging and difficult situations, the practice of faith and allowing Jesus’ words to influence our daily lives can make beneficial changes in what may have become disjointed communities.

Communicating with Christ and asking forgiveness for sins will keep alive the hope of future salvation.

It is simply a matter of having and keeping faith!

Attending a church, when one can, and taking the time to try to learn and understand what Jesus has done for all of us, really does offer the promise of salvation and is the best medicine we could take at this very worrying time.

As we approach Easter and remember the crucifixion of our Lord, followed three days later by his glorious resurrection, it would be wonderful if people could re-acquaint themselves with God, perhaps by attending church, and give thanks for his atonement of our sins and his promise of the new creation to come.

Rezoning of Valla community land

DEAR News Of The Area,

I WOULD like to express my dismay and disappointment at the recent Council decision to rezone community land in order to sell it off.

In particular, I take offence at the argument, put forward by Mayor Rhonda Hoban, that the land in Ocean View Drive will be sold and the money used to contribute to the replacement of the Valla Footbridge.

This is a disingenuous argument, to put it politely.

The money from the sale of the land will go into the general reserve and the funds for the footbridge will come out of the general reserve.

It does not go into a special reserved account.

The second aspect of this argument reflects the impoverished vision for the future of our community held by the Mayor that would see it as acceptable to sell off community land and open space in order to fund infrastructure, particularly in the face of such stiff community opposition.

I'm continually frustrated with people who don't know the roundabout rules.

Surely, they knew them once, when they went for their driving test, but now they unnecessarily stop, switch lanes midway, don't indicate, and a multitude of other sins.

Barry L Dear Barry, I have cross-referenced the NSW Roundabout rules with my general experience with roundabouts, and can see some different areas for improvement.

I think we could all do with a refresher.

1.

Roundabouts manage the traffic flow. Experience: roundabouts are a demonstration of the sheer bloody-mindedness, aggression and indecision of our local residents. If you have an upmarket European car or a jacked-up 4-wheel drive Ute with bull bar and driving lights, this means you automatically have right of way.

Everyone will be instinctively aware of this due to their innate need for selfpreservation.

2.

When you approach the roundabout, you must slow down or stop to give way to all vehicles already on the roundabout. Experience: It doesn't matter what you do, you've got to watch the bloody idiots who do what they want to do anyway (direct quote from my mother).

3.

On multi-lane roundabouts, you must follow the direction of the arrows or signs on the road. Experience: The signs are there to make you feel a false sense of security. If Mary from Lemon Tree Passage remembers she needs a loaf of bread at the Pauls Corner roundabout, she'll happily cross lanes without a moment's consideration for anyone.

4.

A little-known fact is that there is no requirement to exit a roundabout.

Experience: What fun we could all have going round and round the roundabout, never giving way to anyone, until we run out of petrol (though with current fuel prices, this could be an expensive form of irritation to your fellow motorists). Side note: If you go to Canberra, it is almost obligatory that you get unintentionally stuck on this form of looping madness, wondering if you will ever be able to escape.

If the sneak peek of season 11 of The Living Room is anything to go by, the crew are swinging back to the ’60s for a whole lot of fun. But for hosts Amanda Keller (pictured), Dr Chris Brown, Miguel Maestre and Barry Du Bois, variety is the spice of life. One thing fans can expect from this fun and enthusiastic lifestyle series is the return of The Help Desk and heartwarming stories of lending a hand to people in need, along with a series on travel for dummies and some pretty special dinner guests. It’s reliably fun Friday night fare.

Now that we’re more than halfway through season four of this comfort viewing-style police dramedy, it’s questionable whether we can still call its main protagonist, middle-aged cop John Nolan, a rookie. Played by Nathan Fillion (pictured), who brought his legions of Castle fans along for the law enforcement ride with him, this season really has dialled up the drama. In “Heart Beat”, Nolan is confronted with big moments, both personally and professionally. When a plane crashes in the city, the team races to the scene. Then, in “End Game” Officers Chen (Melissa O’Neil) and Bradford (Eric Winter) investigate the murder of a homeless teenager.

When Billy Connolly (pictured right) announced his retirement from stand-up comedy in 2020 due to his battle with Parkinson’s disease, it was upsetting news for fans of the boisterously freewheeling and honest comedian.

That same year, the special Billy Connolly: It’s Been a Pleasure, celebrated his amazing 50-year career.

Now, fans will be delighted by this heartwarming follow-up, which invites us into Connolly’s new life in the Florida Keys. It’s a cheery, lightweight peek into his new home and routine. The bittersweet clips from his stand-up days drive home what a force of nature he was on stage.

By Andrea FERRARI DANIEL Williams, a fourteen-year-old Nambucca runner, has won the 1500m and 800m u16 races at The Australian Track and Field championships.

The event ran from 26 March – 3 April 2022 at Sydney Olympic Park in Homebush, Sydney.

Daniel’s winning times were 4:02.70 (1500m) and 1:57.98 (800m).

Back home in Hyland Park, Nambucca Heads, Daniel told News Of The Area, “I went into the meet confident after wins at all prior races coming into the national championships.

“I have increased my training intensity and train with a group of athletes my own age regularly who are also achieving amazing results nationally.
