Wildlife carers are reporting that many birds are coming into care as a result of the recent storms and one of the most affected species has been the Tawny Frogmouth.

News Of The Area spoke to Valla Beach based WIRES wildlife carers, Rosie and Darren Squibb, who have recently had a number of Tawny Frogmouths come into

For WIRES carers the most important thing is to rehabilitate and release animals and reuniting young birds with their parents is the best outcome possible.

“If you see a young Tawny Frogmouth on the ground the first thing you should do is call WIRES so a carer can come and make an assessment on the condition of the bird,” said Rosie.

“There may be situations where you will have to keep the bird warm and dry until a WIRES carer or a vet can make an assessment,” Rosie added.

Darren went on to say, “It is key to take particular note of the exact spot you found the bird as it is likely that the parents will still be nearby and reuniting the family is very possible.”

that, while not all bird species will take their young back, the Tawny Frogmouth will and it is the parents who are best to teach their young how to hunt and survive in their natural habitat.

“Like all native wildlife these birds have a very particular diet and you should not attempt to feed them as it could put their health at risk and trained WIRES Carers will be able to provide the correct type of food,” said Darren.

A stroll through the numerous galleries of the Frank Partridge VC Museum will take you past exhibits representing all conflicts and even some

peace operations that Australia has been involved in.

The ever-expanding displays cover uniforms, weapons, field equipment and heavy equipment such as classic World War Two era trucks, field guns and even a Mk VIII Torpedo.

It is worth noting the museum also boasts one of the most comprehensive military reference

libraries in the state.

News Of The Area asked Mr Blue Manning, President of the Museum Committee, why he has been a long-term volunteer at the museum.

“I believe it is important to make sure what our forebears in the Australian armed services went through is never forgotten,” said Blue Manning.

The apps are Morcombe’s Birds of Australia and Pizzey & Knight Birds of Australia.

“There is also a free app, which is quite good: Merlin Bird ID by Cornell Lab.” It’s hard to imagine a world without birds, but as Richard says, many species are in a precarious situation.

“The latest ‘Action Plan for Australian Birds 2020’, published

by CSIRO, lists 96 Australian birds that are closer to extinction than ten years ago.

“Climate change (with associated fire and drought), plus land clearing and drying wetlands, are some of the factors involved.

“On the other hand, 23 of our birds have become more secure because of strong action to conserve them.

“The Coffs Coast is one of the most birdrich areas of NSW.” Here Richard shares some of the many glorious high points of our local birding.

“We have lyrebirds, one of the world’s most accomplished vocalists and mimics; majestic Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoos tearing at branches in their search for grubs; and colourful honeyeaters and lorikeets sipping nectar from our backyard flowers.

“And what would our world be like without birdsong?

“Understandably, people like to get closer to birds.

“It is surprising how many birds will come to a backyard bird bath.

“Site it near a window and, preferably, not far from a shrub where small birds can feel safe as they wait their turn.

“Technology offers a great way to identify the birds you see and hear.

“There are two excellent ‘apps’ for smartphones.

“They have the big advantage over a book in that you can hear the calls, and you have your ‘field guide’ in a very portable form.”

“We are always looking for volunteers to join our ranks and have a number of volunteering options available such as office staff, repair, cleaning museum objects and curating the exhibits.”

“Funding projects in regional towns will ensure communities have the facilities they need for the future, while creating jobs now and driving our economic recovery.

“Round 5 of the Building Better Regions Fund saw critical projects across the Mid North Coast receive significant grants, from the world-leading dementia care village at Emmaus in Port Macquarie to the impressive upgrade of Sawtell Pool to meet the demands of our growing population.

“Our Government has a strong track record of delivering projects that are important to regional Australians and I look forward to discussing new projects with local councils and community groups.”

The BBRF supports economic and social infrastructure for the long-term benefit of regional communities. Funding the infrastructure and services that communities need for the future will create jobs and help them rebound strongly from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Funding under Round 6 takes the Government’s total investment through the BBRF to $1.38 billion.

This includes an investment of over $15.5 million across 19 projects throughout Cowper.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development. Barnaby Joyce, said the Government is focused on ensuring our regions remain strong and grow into the future.

“Regional Australians deserve the same

services and opportunities that people in metropolitan cities have and the Building Better Regions Fund helps make this happen,” the Deputy Prime Minister said.

“That’s why we’ve committed another $250 million for projects and initiatives that will transform communities, create new jobs and drive economic growth across regional Australia.

“This will build on the 298 fantastic regional projects that shared in $300 million in funding under the last round of the Building Better Regions Fund.

“Our Government is committed to delivering the best outcomes for regional and remote Australia, which is why we are providing local businesses, industries and families with opportunities to get ahead.”

Local governments and eligible incorporated not-for-profit organisations can again apply for grants of $5,000 up to $10 million to cover 50 percent or more of eligible project costs.

Round 6 projects will be funded under two streams.

The Infrastructure Projects Stream supports the construction of new infrastructure, or the upgrade or extension of existing infrastructure.

The Community Investments Stream funds community development activities including, but not limited to, new or expanded local events, strategic regional plans, leadership and capability building activities.

Applications close on Thursday, 10 February 2022.

Local authors filling the shelves

q Anthony English, Valla author of Death of a Coast Watcher, now available in Coffs bookstores.

ANOTHER Mid North Coast author lands in the burgeoning Local Authors section of Coffs Harbour Book Warehouse thanks to manager Julie Holgate’s keen interest in our region’s writers.

“I’m really keen to support local authors and we have a growing number filling our shelves,” Julie told News Of The Area.

Anthony English is the Valla author now stocked at Book Warehouse along with the new QBD bookstore in the Plaza.

Tony gained a nomination for Booker Prize 2021, and while he didn’t make the finals, he is justly proud of such high recognition for his first novel, Death of a Coast Watcher.

A prestigious publishernominated award, the Booker Prize compiles nominees through publishers being consulted on the novels they wish to nominate.

“That process, totally independent of me, led to Death of a Coast Watcher being one of only 158 nominees worldwide in 2021.

“Sure, it didn't make the final cut but being one of 158 nominees for that prestigious award is heartening for a non-entity hiding in the backblocks of Valla,” Tony told News

“Another point is that self-published books are not eligible.

“Death of a Coast Watcher is a traditional publication funded and managed entirely by a longestablished UK publisher; they specialise in fiction and non-fiction with strong Asia-related content.”

As the general public ploughs through books with a hearty appetite, and we’re hearing about

increasing numbers of local authors penning their prose, there’s an awe in seeing the job well done and with esteemed recognition.

For Tony the motivation to write Death of a Coast Watcher wasn’t about wrestling with having to write this book, it was more about him waking up one morning and deciding to do it on a whim.

“I had nothing much else to do,” Tony said.

“That said, as I got into its early stages, and as it progressed over several years, I realised I was doing it to make sense of sometimes weird life experiences, and to create articulate, rich order out of semi-formed and sometimes chaotic ideas.

“In a sense, you could say I ended up creating some sort of artistic order out of chaos.

“I guess a lot of it was about writing to find out what I thought about a lot of things, with the thoughts channelled through characters and situations based on real places and people and situations,” Tony said.

Nambucca Heads school girl publishes book

NAMBUCCA Heads High School student Charlotte Battiston has written and self-published her first book.

Fourteen-year-old Charlotte, who writes under the pen name Charlie Batt, has written a children’s/young adult fantasy which was published mid-December.

Titled ‘Imagine: A Wild Civilisation', it’s the story of a young girl named Charlie Neon Imagination and her Gippyguppy friend, Bucky, who become stranded on a secret island when they decide to go exploring.

On their journey they encounter fantastical creatures such as the Fire Queen, a Sorcerer, and a magical race called the Singanoids.

Charlotte wrote the 160 page book in three months early last year, and with the help of her nan, author Annie Seaton who lives nearby in Nambucca, she has now produced both an eBook and a print version and created her own cover for both versions.

The idea for the book began from images she created on her iPad using Sketchbook.

Her classmates and school friends told her she had such a wonderful imagination that she should write a story using the images.

When she began writing, Charlie said she felt very motivated and always knew she would write a whole book.

She writes on her iPad most days before and after school, as well as jotting down ideas for more stories.

When she is writing, she listens to music to keep herself in the right mood: relaxed, happy or sad, or wild etc, depending on the scene she is writing.

Charlie’s characters become real to her, and she said it is very easy to create the story with them as she can see and hear them in her imagination, and experience their emotions which makes it easier to write their responses to situations they find themselves in.

Her sense of humour is strong, and she enjoys incorporating humour into her scenes to entertain readers.

Charlie has already completed book number two, ‘Imagine: The Long Winter’ which is in edits.

Book three, ‘Imagine: The Golden Starpearl’ is underway, and she already has plans for future books.

Getting to the ‘art’ of it HAVE you ever seen a painting in an art gallery and thought “I wonder what that is all about?”

If so, here is an opportunity to get to the ‘art’ of it.

The Nambucca Valley Art Appreciation Group aims to give members some insights and background into the story of famous Australian artworks and some guidelines on how to approach paintings.

The group has been growing in numbers in the Nambucca Valley over the past ten years and now has over 80 members.

The course running at present is focused on ‘Australian Art and Social History’.

“We are looking at the work of acclaimed artists and considering their works in relation to the social history of the times they lived in,” said

Marlene Griffin, Nambucca Valley Art Appreciation Group.

“Many of these artists have led colourful lives and we explore their experiences and exploits.

“There is often a humorous, entertaining and sometimes scandalous element to the life story of many of these artists,” Marlene said.

The very first Australian artist, John Lewin, somehow missed the sailing boat from England to Australia and his poor wife sailed into the unknown without him.

It was another two years before the couple were reunited and he could start to paint the fauna and flora of this strange land.

Prior to Covid-19 restrictions, Art Appreciation group members enjoyed face to face meetings.

Presently members are sharing the course by email with images of

The course is free to anyone who wants to join.

Marlene said the Group has big things planned for the coming year.

“Our first artist of 2022 will be one of the most acclaimed artists in Australia,” Marlene said.

“He is often known as ‘Master of the Gum Trees’.

“You have most likely guessed that this is Hans Heysen.

“We will be following this up with an equally interesting story of his most famous daughter; the first female war artist of Australia and the first female artist to win the Archibald prize - Nora Heysen,” Marlene said.

Members of the group can participate by contributing their views on particular artists or art works but there is no obligation to respond to mail-outs.

You can simply enjoy the stories and hopefully be inspired by them.

THE Society of St Vincent de Paul was established in NSW on 24 July, 1881, and quickly spread across the state.

There are now 14,967 volunteers and 390 Conferences statewide.

News Of The Area spoke with Sue, President of the St Patrick’s Conference, Macksville.

The Conference operates out of the old St Patrick’s school site next to the Catholic Church in Wallace Street, Macksville.

They open on Tuesdays and Fridays, and those n e e d i n g assistance can ring on those

days between 9am and 10 am on 0447 545 243 for an appointment.

“In this area, the local Conference is called St Patrick’s, and assists people in need from Fishermans Reach to Valla,” said Sue. The St Patrick’s Conference was established on 6 November, 1961, and consists of dedicated volunteers who assist people in need and do not discriminate against cultural, religious or political beliefs.

Anyone in need is welcome.

The aim of the Conference’s work is giving people ‘A Hand Up, Not a Hand Out.’ “At the heart of St Vincent de Paul is a profound sense of respect for the people we serve and a desire to learn from them,” said Sue. The core work of the Society is carried out by volunteers and does not receive government funding.

“Our services are funded mainly through donations, fundraising

activities, and enterprises run by the Society.

“Not many know that St Vincent de Paul is not government funded.

“We rely mainly on donations, fundraising, and enterprises operated by the Society,” said Sue. The Society of St Vincent de Paul has a long history originating in 1883 in Paris, France.

It began with a 20-year-old law student, Frederick Ozanam who participated in a debate which would change his life, the life of his friends, and set off a movement which would grow into a worldwide charity – The Society of St Vincent de Paul.

Frederic Ozanam was inspired

by St Vincent de Paul’s legacy and decided to name the Society after the famous French saint of the poor.

Brothers in Arms - Part One: Frank

On arrival he was sent to Rouelles for two weeks and from here set off to join his Battalion.

The 33rd were in Belgium when Frank arrived but soon marched to a camp well behind the lines in France for rest and training.

At this time, they were well supplied.

On one August night they could have boiled meat, mashed vegetables, onion sauce, boiled rice and raisins, biscuits and tea for dinner.

After marching to several other camps and even more training, the battalion arrived at the front on 29 September.

The area they were sent to was an unknown and unpronounceable place to the men at the time, but it would never be forgotten by those

FRANK Gosson was born in Kempsey in 1895 and lived there with his parents, four brothers and two sisters before they moved to Macksville where brother, George, was born.

After leaving school Frank worked as a labourer.

When war broke out Frank presented himself and became a member of the Australian Imperial Force in May 1916.

Basic training was at Cootamundra.

This would, as the name suggests, cover the basics.

Rifle and bayonet practice and lots and lots of marching.

From here Frank went to Goulburn Camp for the remainder of his basic training.

The troops were then divided up for specialised instruction in the units they would be assigned to.

For Frank, this was with the Light Trench Mortar Battery.

This was an effective weapon that could be fired from the safety of a trench.

This would take a further 11 weeks.

On 25 October 1916 Frank boarded HMT Ascanius at Sydney.

This would be the last time he would see his native land.

The troopship made its way to England, a trip that would take two months. They arrived three days after Christmas.

From here it was straight to advanced training at Wiltshire.

After just over a month here, Frank was transferred to the 33rd Battalion.

It was during this time that he developed cellulitis of the leg which required an operation.

It would be two months before Frank was fully recovered.

Frank was a scout at this time, his job was to run ahead of his battalion and check for dangers.

The German artillery war at this time was incessant.

On the night of 13 October, Frank had settled in a shell crater to try and get some sleep.

A shell landed next to him, and he was buried in the explosion. He was killed instantly.

He had been at the front for just two weeks before his life was cut so tragically short.

Brothers in Arms - Part Two: George

GEORGE Gosson was born in Macksville 1902 and was too young to join brother Frank in the War. He was working in forestry in Gympie when the Second World War broke out.

In June 1940 at the age of 37, George signed up for service.

Three days later he was in camp in Brisbane and was assigned to the 2/15 Battalion.

The following month they sailed for Darwin onboard the Zealandia, a vessel later sunk during the Japanese bombing.

While stationed there the 2/15 built roads and defences.

On Christmas Day 1940 they embarked on the Queen Mary destined for Egypt.

Arriving February 1941, they were sent to a camp in Palestine.

A month later, George was transferred to the Headquarters Guard Battalion.

The Guard Battalion was comprised of older men who were used as sentries for camps and prisoners.

As it was built up of older men it had humorous nicknames like “the olds and the bolds” and “the ruthless and the toothless”.

George was part of 10 Platoon and went with the headquarters of the 7th Division around the Middle East.

On 7 December 1941 the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and Prime Minister Curtin made the decision to withdraw his divisions to help protect Australia.

George was going home.

He boarded the HMT Orcades along with a mixture of other troops.

They were sailing for the Pacific when it was

announced that they would not be going home after all.

The Dutch were in trouble in the East Indies, and as the Orcades was the fastest, it would now be sailing for Java.

On 19 February 1942 the men, without most of their equipment, disembarked.

Two weeks later, the motley group under Brigadier Blackburn had taken up defensive positions near Leuwilang Bridge.

Within days they had met a superior Japanese force and began a withdrawal.

They were hoping to make the coast where they could be picked up and taken home.

On 12 March, still some distance from the coast, they were ordered to surrender.

They were rounded up by the Japanese and became

They were kept in camps in Java and remained here for a year.

But the Japanese needed labour to help build their Burma-Thailand Railway and George’s group were sent.

Travelling in overcrowded train carriages and steamers, they eventually arrived in Thailand.

They were to endure unimaginable horrors and treatment during this time.

became sick and was sent to a makeshift hospital at Chungkai.

With no medical supplies or adequate shelter, George succumbed to his illness and died on 15 June.

He was one of the 2,815 Australians to lose their lives during the building of the railway.

Helping locals at Valla Beach

IMAGINE starting a business as part of your sea change to find most of your customers quickly consider your business to be a vital service.

That is what happened when retired registered nurse Deb Burleigh and former golf pro Steve Hitchcock began a business known as Possum’s Tuckerbox operating out of the Valla Beach Tourist Park.

With a love for catering and a strong sense of community the couple left their former home of Bathurst looking for the ideal rural seaside setting, what Deb describes as “the surf and turf”.

While holidaying in Valla Beach they realised this was the perfect place and became residents.

Identifying the park could

really do with a food service and after getting a thumbs up from the park's owners and management, Deb and Steve had a food van custom made to their specifications in Murwillumbah on the Far North Coast.

Now operating for three months Deb and Steve have a vast menu from home made pies and sausage rolls to full meals and barista style coffee and word has spread regarding the quality and price of the food.

News Off The Area spoke to a number of residents of the Valla Beach Tourist Park who say they now rely on the service provided by Deb and Steve for many of their meals.

Ralph Jordan, a resident of the park with some health issues affecting his mobility, boasts, “My doctor has noticed my health has improved

and my weight dropped to a healthy level due to the change in my eating habits.

“Thanks to Deb and Steve I now eat properly cooked nutritious meals that I can afford and if I can’t get about real well Deb delivers them to me free of charge,” added Ralph.

Ralph echoed the sentiments of others at the

park who live on their own or have health issues and have come to rely on Deb and Steve’s personal touch.

Just in front of the Possum’s Tuckerbox van are a couple of picnic tables under cover and many residents now come down to the van and meet with others over a coffee.

personal tragedy in her life, and Steve, who has recently overcome a significant health issue, have empathy with so many of the park residents.

Regular customer and Valla Beach Tourist Park resident Robin said, “It is not just the food that has made a difference, it is also the willingness to sit and have a chat that has cut away the

isolation some of us were feeling.”

Possums Tuckerbox is open 7 days a week 7:30am to 1:30pm with extended hours in the holidays.

Bringing hope and trust back to abused horses

TAYLORS ARM has become home to an ever-transitioning number of animals requiring rescue, care and then rehoming.

This year, Jencie Martin and her husband, Jason, founded Burrapine Brumby, Horse & Livestock assisted by son Clay.

“Our aim is to recover and bring hope and trust back to many abused animals from the very small to the very large,” Jencie told News Of The Area.

“Situated in pristine Taylors Arm, we take on cases of abuse and neglect and nurse them back to health and allow them to trust and have faith in us again whilst then finding

them their perfect forever home.

“As long as I can remember I have rescued animals while at the same time driving my family nuts.

“But it breaks my heart to see any animal in pain or in an unstable situation, and although there are options like the RSPCA it often takes a long time and often, in my experience, the animal is not removed.

“Here I offer a no-questions surrender system.

“No matter why or how you got there, I am willing to invest in these animals and take them on no matter what without judgement.”

Farm Stays this year and as part of this they offer farm tours which they use as an educational opportunity to teach the public about the plight of rescue animals and how people can invest in their futures.

“I have found time and again that these animals understand what we have done and how we are investing in them, and they pay us back with love and loyalty like no other animal I have ever met.”

Jencie and Jason specialise in livestock but have a real passion for brumbies and horses.

“Our son Clay restarts and re-educates them, avoiding the old school mentality of 'breaking them' but rather he educates them.

“Our passion is to teach the public what it means to rescue an animal and give them solutions.

“Here in our valley in the last three years we have gone through drought, flood, bush fire and storms.

“Requiring rescue can be a matter of circumstance, sometimes that is out of our control.

“We saw this when we took on five foals and three horses from the Tamworth drought prior to the bushfires.

“These animals were so weak and starved but there was little their owner could do so we gave them the opportunity to re-home to us where we brought them back to health and re-homed them all to forever homes.

DEAR Jasminda, How do we deal with friends who want to come and stay over the holidays who are not vaccinated?

I'm not so much worried about our health, but we are in contact with vulnerable people, and I would be devastated if they were to contract COVID.

THIS is a meandering self-sufficient tropical plant who also grows itself really happily in subtropical-like locations like ours.

However, reliably being able to feast on it means knowing how to tip the balance towards large tubers in known locations.

Both the tubers and leaves come in a wide array of colours and shapes and are edible, delicious and nutritious.

The leaves are a great warm season spinach.

They wilt quickly with storage so eat them as freshly picked as possible, raw or cooked.

Sweet potato needs a long frost free growing season of 4 - 6 months with warm days and warm nights.

Grow them on a wide mound.

They have no tolerance for waterlogging and will simply rot away if left to sit in soggy soil.

A mound will drain well.

A wide one will retain enough moisture to keep the plant happy as it does not like drying out.

Prevent excess roots.

This plant will root wherever a leaf node touches the ground.

Once planted, don't let it ramble and root all over the place.

Snip off the wandering tendrils at about a metre long (eat the trimmings!).

Encourage the plant to put its energy into making a few storage roots only, not tendrils and leaves and a whole bunch of roots.

Some people grow the tendrils up a trellis to prevent them laying on the ground and making more roots but you can just keep pruning.

Sweet potato can be grown in this area from storage roots, slips, cuttings or sprouts.

Cuttings and sprouts are most recommended as they have the lowest chance of passing on plant diseases.

Cuttings are pieces of the vines with a growing tip.

Sprouts are new growth direct from the tuber, minus the tuber and with lots of nodes close together.

Use this habit of rooting from nodes to your advantage.

When you plant your sweet potato, bury more than one node per planting.

A group of storage roots will grow from each node.

You will end up with one plant, multiple nodes underground and multiple groups of sweet potatoes in a contained area.

Don't feed sweet potato lots of nitrogen unless you really want a lot of leaves and bugger all roots.

Keep them evenly watered while they are growing and next time, plant them in a different spot in the garden.

Boating Now launches new multi-million dollar round BOATING facilities across the state are being overhauled through a funding injection of up to $28 million.

Minister for Transport and Roads Rob Stokes said the package is the fourth round in the NSW Government’s Boating Now Program, which has invested in about 330 projects since it began in 2014.

“People across NSW have a renewed appreciation for our natural wonders and this program will allow more people to get out on the water safely,” Mr Stokes said.

“This latest investment builds on the $28 million third round of funding announced in 2019 and the original $70 million program.

“Through funding partnerships with councils, community groups and industry, this program delivers improved maritime access and safety at facilities right across NSW.” Projects previously funded through the

Boating Now Program include a boating facilities upgrade at Rowland Reserve in Bayview, a new and improved boat ramp at Little Beach in Nelson Bay, an upgrade to the Sandy Point boat ramp and a new pontoon on the Georges River.

Through boating licence and registration fees the Boating Now Program is able to fund collaborative projects that support economic and community benefits across NSW. It also aims to provide better access to NSW waterways for local and visiting boaters so they can enjoy their time on the water with safety and ease.

Registrations of interest close on 28 February 2022 via http://www.rms.nsw.gov. au/projects/key-build-program/boatingnow/ and must be submitted before interested parties will be invited to submit a formal funding application.

THE New South Wales and Australian Governments are inviting councils across New South Wales to apply for $2.1 million in grants under the Recreational Fishing and Camping Facilities Program (the Program).

The Program, funded by the Australian Government and administered by the New South Wales Government, provides grants to local government for the purpose of new or renewed: • boat ramps; • marine rescue facilities; • toilet blocks; • fish cleaning stations; • camping facilities; or • other infrastructure or facilities directly associated with recreational fishing, boating, or camping.

Assistant Minister for Forestry and Fisheries Jonno Duniam said the Federal Government had committed $20 million to upgrade recreational fishing, boating, and camping facilities across Australia and that these grants would provide significant benefits to regional areas.

“Recreational fishing is an important leisure activity that delivers both economic and social benefits across the country,” Assistant Minister Duniam said.

“For many of us, it is a part of the Australian

way of life.

“Improving facilities and access to recreational fishing, boating and camping areas will provide locals and visitors alike with better opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors by camping and fishing in our rivers, lakes and around the coast.

“So many of us are looking forward to summer holidays in the great outdoors, and new and renewed infrastructure and access will help everyone to enjoy the serenity of some of the best fishing, boating, and camping spots around the state of New South Wales.”

Minister for Agriculture and Western NSW Adam Marshall said the funding would secure new or renewed facilities for local councils to help improve facilities across the state such as boat ramps, jetties, amenity blocks and campsites.

“After a tough two years for the Australian tourism industry, this program will see improved infrastructure delivered across NSW, to help attract more tourists to our best fishing and outdoor destinations,” Minister Marshall said.

“The program is designed to support local councils to deliver new or renewed infrastructure directly related to recreational fishing, boating, and camping.

“The improvements will help bolster the recreational fishing industry, which already does so much for the state, including injecting $3.4 billion into the economy each year.

Jordan, I have been pondering this one for a while also.

There are people in my family who are immuno-compromised and then there are relatives who are young, fit, and healthy, but not vaccinated.

Although I am a reasonably wellqualified person, my qualifications are not in infection control or immunology and so in these situations, I defer to the experts.

I also ask two questions in relation to any advice: 1. Does this person have an ulterior motive for the information they are providing?

2. Is this information backed up by the person's area of expertise or is it simply their opinion under the guise of expertise?

If it is the latter, they are nothing more or less than an opinionist, and an opinionist, however amusing or hilarious or shocking or disgruntled or provocative they seem, is in the game of entertaining, provoking, and sometimes (after one too many vodka, lime and sodas) denigrating others for their own endgame.

Unfortunately, social media has enabled anyone with a device to spread information (and misinformation) and it is sometimes those who yell the loudest who get the attention.

In your situation, I would suggest that you assess any risk, think of those who, to the best of your knowledge, may not be protected where there is risk, and use that information to decide.

Next time, Jordan, can you please ask me a question about dealing with whining teenagers, absconding pets (and/or husbands), too-tight activewear, whether colour-coding pegs is a disorder, date night disasters or any number of subjects that I am able to answer with a fair degree of confidence and experience.

ACCELERATING change in women’s sport to encourage participation and leadership is the key focus of a new advisory body set up by the NSW Government.

The Game Changers Ministerial Advisory Council has been established by Minister for Sport Natalie Ward to provide strategic advice on how to fast-track women to take part in all levels of sport, both on and off the field.

“It’s been fantastic to see the profile of women’s sport accelerate in recent years, but we know there is still much more we can do to encourage a greater representation of women and invest in their future,” Mrs Ward said.
